West Phila. 67, Judge 45

  Gene Banks, a 6-6 soph, shot 11-for-14 and 2-for-3 for 24 points and snatched 13 rebounds as the Speedboys completed a
25-0 season. Tim Smith had eight points and six rebounds and held Judge star Al Clancy to three points. Michael Collins added
11 points and five assists while Mark Dwight had 10 points, nine boards. Charlie Rice led Judge with 15 points and nine rebounds.

QUARTERFINALS
West 62, Germantown 35
  Mark Dwight pumped in 35 points as West overcame the Bears’ attempt at a stall. Chris Kibler (16) led the losers.
Edison 62, Northeast 59
  Rodney Lee (17), Danny Thomas (16) and Mike Fuller (13) led the Inventors, who blew most of a 13-point lead in the final 2:26. Northeast’s Greg Joyner, the PL scoring champ, was held to a season-low 17 points.
Gratz 75, Overbrook 67 (ot)
  Gary Devlin, who finished an unsightly 7-for-23, hit an 18-footer to force OT, which Gratz won, 8-0. Devlin and Keith Johnson scored 15 points apiece. Mike Blackshear (25) led ’Brook.
Olney 77, Dobbins 43
  Charles McAliley, held out until the second quarter for disciplinary reasons, scored 24 points. In the first quarter, 6-8 Bob Stephens had seven rebounds and five blocks. Mike Saunders (13) led Dobbins.
SEMIFINALS
At Southern
West 52, Edison 50
  Tim Smith had 12 points, six rebounds and five assists and blocked Danny Thomas’s potential tying shot with 0:09 left. Soph Gene Banks totaled 12 points, 11 rebounds. For Edison, Rodney Lee had 18 points and 15 rebounds and Clarence “Cowboy” Days had 13 points, four assists.
At Lincoln
Gratz 69, Olney 68
  Stanley Jenkins (17), Keith Johnson (16), Gary Devlin (15) and Jessie Grier (14) scored in double figures and Anthony Millhouse grabbed 13 rebounds to pace Gratz, which won on Johnson’s conversion of a one-and-one at 0:14 and his blocked shot 10 seconds later. Gratz scored the final five points. Charles McAliley (18) led Olney while Bob Stephens had 14 points, 16 boards.

  Al Clancy posted 22 points and nine rebounds while Jim ‘‘Mo’’ Connolly (11 rebounds) and Tom Kneib had 16 points and four assists apiece. Lawrence Reid and Pat Wherrity scored 11 apiece for Dougherty.
La Salle 66, Wood 58
 
Five-seven Mike Canelli (seven assists) and 6-8 Bob Carber scored 18 points apiece while Joe Hand added 13 points and three assists. For Wood, making its first playoff appearance in its ninth CL season, Mike Dolge had 18 points and Bob Spadafora mixed 14 points, 13 rebounds, seven blocks.

Roman 43, Carroll 38
 
The Cahillites survived despite shooting 4-for-26 in the first half. On his 18th birthday, Zane Major scored 16 points. Steve Compton also had 16 points.
Bonner 43, O’Hara 35
 
Terry Hannan scored 15 points while Bob Reinagel had 10 points and seven rebounds. O’Hara got 16 points and 13 boards from Mike Pearson, but shot 4-for-20 in the second half.
Semifinals
Judge 61, La Salle 56
 
Jim ‘‘Mo’’ Connolly shot 7-for-11 and 6-for-6 for 20 points and took nine rebounds. Al Clancy also scored 20 points and Bob Convey had 14 points, five assists. The Crusaders won the third quarter, 20-4. La Salle’s Bob Carber had 20 points, 10 rebounds.
Roman 61, Bonner 49
 
Six-six soph Joe Garrett had 13 points and 12 boards and opened the fourth quarter with a long jumper and a three-point play to provide a 44-38 lead. Zane Major scored 16 points. Bonner’s Terry Hannan scored 16 points.

Judge 48, Roman 46
 
Jim "Mo" Connolly shot 7-for-9 for 16 points and Al Clancy added 12 as the Crusaders, a 20-year CL member, won their first title after numerous bouts with frustration. After Ira Brown hit a 15-footer with 0:26 left to pull Roman within 46-44, Judge scored the clincher as Tom Kneib hit Clancy with a long-distance pass and Clancy fed Dennis Taylor for an easy layup. Mike Morrow (19) and Zane Major (14) led Roman.

  The teams split their season series. Host Haverford won Game No. 3, 68-53, as freshman Mike Edelman (20), Mike Purcell (18), freshman Charlie Miller (15, 17 rebounds) and Mike Mayock (nine of the game’s first 11 points) led the way to break Malvern’s 23-game league winning streak. In Game No. 8, freshman Gordy Bryan (12), Joe Carney and Steve Donnelly (11 apiece) paced Malvern to a 51-39 win. Purcell (13) and Edelman (five) were held in check by a triangle-and-two defense.
