ROUND OF 16
Class AAAA

Frankford 72, Bartram 71 (OT): Clarck Dure's trey gave Bartram a 65-62 lead. Frankford's Kenny Spotwood (21 points, 11 rebounds) forced OT with a lengthy, desperation trey that caused his team's fans to storm the floor in celebration, resulting in a technical foul to start OT and allowing Bartram to claim a one-point lead. Rakeem Golden-White's late free throws provided a three-point lead. Bartram missed a trey, then got a layup at the buzzer. Bartram frosh Tyrone Garland had 10 fourth-quarter points.
Gratz 76, Southern 63: The Bulldogs used balance to offset Ramone Moore's 38-point avalanche. Tommie "T.J." Sykes rang up 25 points, but received plenty of help from Ishmawiyl McFadden (15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks), Charles White and Josh "Scrap" Martin (eight assists apiece). After a Southern player kicked a Gratz player during a scramble that followed a hard foul, fan tension caused police to clear the gym for the final two minutes.
Class AAA
Franklin LC 42, Eng. and Science 39: Malcolm Eleby registered 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists while Dante Wooten helped out with six points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Class AA
Imhotep 80, Straw. Mansion 75: This was one of the most amazing games in city history. In the first quarter, Mansion's Dwayne Davis (32) hit six consecutive treys. No. 6 came on a shot while he was falling out of bounds in front of Imhotep's bench. He later added two more and finished with 32 points, but the Knights collapsed after he fouled out with 6:40 remaining. Imhotep, which entered the fourth quarter down by 19 points, rang up a 31-7 advantage while forcing 12 turnovers. The three D-I signees, Tamir Johnson, Jermaine Washington and Kashief Edwards (19), scored seven points apiece in the wild comeback. Afterward, Davis and Washington were crying as they shared a halfcourt hug.
Prep Charter 74, Vaux 52: Markieff Morris dominated to the tune of 29 points and 19 rebounds. Jesse Morgan (16) and Marcus Morris (15) also scored well. Phillip Michaels and Hakeem Wilson scored 13 points each for Vaux.
Class A

QUARTERFINALS
Class AAAA Final
(At William Penn)
  Gratz 62, Frankford 50:
Tommie "T.J." Sykes had five rebounds and three blocks and scored eight of his 20 points in a 23-15 fourth quarter. Charles White added 17 points, five boards and seven assists. Kenny Spotwood (11) was Frankford's lone double-figure scorer. He added five apiece of rebounds and assists.
Class AAA Final
(At Southern)
Franklin LC 65, Comm. Tech 60: Kyle Sawyer passed to Denzel Yard for a trio of treys in an 18-8 second quarter while Malcolm Eleby, in time, was his usually productive self with 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Comm. Tech reduced a 20-point deficit to 63-60 on a three-pointer by deep sub Shaquille Shannon on a feed from Najee Edwards (20 points) before FLC closed things out. CT's Shyheem Satchell added 12 points, six boards, three steals.
Class AA Final
(At Southern)
Prep Charter 52, Imhotep 48: The Panthers once again mounted an impressive comeback, this time from 32-16. They had a chance to tie at 50-50, but a lean-back, left-wing jumper by Jermaine Washington did not connect and Parrish Grant (11 points, seven assists) hit two clinching free throws. Marcus and Markieff Morris scored 12 and 14 points. Markieff fouled out with 3:54 left and Ferg Myrick completed an eight-rebound performance. Tamir Johnson (20) scored eight straight points before halftime to fuel Imhotep's rally.
Class A Final
(At William Penn)
  Freire 62, Robeson 60: A
ntoine "Blueberry" Singleton shot 10-for-14 en route to 23 points to lead Freire. He added eight rebounds and two assists. Jarrod Denard and Ameen Rorie halved 30 points and Octavious Booker grabbed 12 rebounds. For Robeson, which missed a last shot and could not get off a follow in time, the leaders were Dom Medlock (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Rob Hall (19, six steals).
SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at Saint Joseph's Univ.)
Gratz 69, Freire 35: With AAAA meeting A, the fear was a mismatch and that was what happened. In reaching the final for the 16th time in the last 19 seasons, Gratz turned bad to worse by winning the fourth quarter, 19-6. Tommie "T.J." Sykes shot 8-for-14 en route to 17 points, Ishmawiyl McFadden mixed 12 points and eight rebounds, Charles White totaled 13 points, four assists and four steals and Josh "Scrap" Martin dished six assists. White played lockdown defense on Freire's best scoring threat, Jarrod Denard (6-for-20, 16 points, no field goals in a 29-15 first half).

Prep Charter 49, Franklin LC 40: This game also left much to be desired. PC seized command with an 11-0 run sandwiching halftime and then FLC never whittled the deficit below six. The Morris twins, Marcus (15) and Markieff (10), led in scoring while adding eight and 11 rebounds, respectively. Parrish Grant distributed six assists. Ferg Myrick grabbed seven rebounds in limited duty. Kyle Sawyer (15) led FLC in scoring as Malcolm Eleby had one of those nights (3-for-19, 12 points). He did add eight rebounds, three assists and five steals. Dante Wooten registered seven rejections.
FINAL
(At Temple's Liacouras Center)
Prep Charter 49, Gratz 48: The Huskies survived as Gratz missed three "last shots," one of which was launched after the game "ended." After 6-10 Markieff Morris partially deflected a close-in flip shot by Josh "Scrap" Martin and 6-9 Marcus Morris, Markieff's identical twin, batted away Alibaba Odd's follow, the clock melted down to 0:00 and the Huskies' fans/cheerleaders stormed the court in celebration and "We Are the Champions" played over the sound system. One problem: the clock should have been stopped. The referees summoned the Huskies back to the court and put 1.3 on the clock. Martin inbounded to Charles White, who missed a left-wing trey. PC's joy was repeated, this time with even more intensity. Just two days after Neumann-Goretti's Rick Jackson posted 26 points, 17 rebounds and eight rebounds in a CL semi, Markieff went pretty much stat for stat with 23-18-8. Marcus had 10 points, 10 boards and five assists. Gratz turned three straight steals into six consecutive points and a 48-47 lead before Markieff took a pass from Tyree "Chuck" Harris and followed his own miss for what turned out to be the winning basket. Tommie "T.J." Sykes (13), White (11) and Ishmawiyl McFadden (10) scored in double figures for Gratz. White added eight rebounds and four assists. The loss made Gratz 7-9 in title games over the last 19 seasons, with three setbacks by one point and two others in OT. (One of those one-point losses, to Franklin LC in '94, was later erased due to the Bobcats' use of ineligible players.)

State Playoffs

CLASS A
Play-In Game

For Freire, which was able to look confidently ahead thanks to a nine-man roster featuring all underclassmen, Jarrod Denard scored 17 points and Octavious Booker grabbed 13 rebounds.

CLASS AAA
First Round
At Southern

Greencastle-Antrim 68, Franklin LC 59: The District 12 champ suffered the indignity of falling to the No. 5 seed from District 3. Malcolm Eleby finished his career with 23 points (1,556), nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. Kyle Sawyer and Denzel Yard scored 11 points apiece. A six-point play -- two treys by the same player, surrounding an off-the-ball foul that enabled G-A to retain possession -- dropped FLC into a 50-39 hole with 6:19 left. The Bobcats moved within 61-59 at 1:41 before fading.
At Chambersburg

Mercersburg James Buchanan 60, Communications Tech 58: The Phoenix was victimized by a buzzer-beating layup after forging a tie on its own layup (by Najee Edwards) with seven seconds left. Edwards (17) and junior Andrew "Scootie" Randall (13, 1,057 career) scored in double figures for CT.

CLASS AAAA
First Round
At Northeast

Gratz 82, Upper Darby 73: The Pub's proudest program finally broke through in a state playoff. The Bulldogs beat the quite small visitors at their own game, swooshing to a 26-10 lead after one quarter. Josh "Scrap" Martin shot 7-for-10 and 11-for-12 for 25 points, collected five apiece of assists and steals and even claimed seven rebounds.
Four of his five assists came while Gratz was setting the first quarter tone. Ishmawiyl McFadden posted six rebounds and four blocks and scored 18 points while shooting 8-for-11 from the floor. Tommie "T.J." Sykes totaled 14 points (6-for-9) and nine boards. Charles White collected 11 points and eight assists (five in the third quarter).
At Central Dauphin East
Southern 72, Cumberland Valley 53: Before a turnaway crowd, Temple-bound Ramone Moore shot 13-for-19 en route to 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Anthony "Crip" Reese mixed five assists, six steals and even eight rebounds. His twin, Antoine (13), and Robert "Jay" McKee (10) also scored in double figures.
At Northeast
Pennsbury 56, Frankford 50: In a wickedly hot and overcrowded gym (there was no concession stand) filled mostly with Pennsbury loyalists, only a late burst by Frankford made this one seem close. Senior swingman Kenny Spotwood used an 18-point effort to finalize his career total at 1,005; he added eight rebounds. The basket that raised the number to 1,001 drew Frankford within 35-29. The Falcons scored the next nine points. Antwaine Brown grabbed seven boards. J.C. Montgomery and Malik Tinsley notched three blocks apiece.
At William Tennent
Plymouth-Whitemarsh 56, Edison 44: George Baker (16) and Daniel Johnson (14) reached double figures for Edison. Baker, a junior guard and the city's leading career scorer among current underclassmen (1,101), added five steals. Johnson had seven rebounds, three steals.
Second Round
At Coatesville
Gratz 67, Penn Manor 46: Ishmawiyl McFadden scored eight of his 23 points in a 19-10 second quarter to help the Bulldogs establish command and become the first PL AAAA team to advance to a quarterfinal. Tommie "T.J." Sykes (14) and Alibaba Odd (13) also scored in double figures while Josh "Scrap" Martin dished four assists.
At Norristown
Chester 70, Southern 55: The Rams were sabotaged by a 20-6 third quarter, during which they committed 12 turnovers. Also, for the game Chester claimed triple their number of rebounds (51-17). Ramone Moore, honored earlier in the day by the Markward Club as the PL's top senior, scored 23 of his 34 points in the first half.
Third Round
At Norristown
Gratz 61, Lower Merion 58: After entering halftime scoreless, in part due to foul trouble, Tommie "T.J." Sykes roared to 18 points and tallied six in a row to leave behind a 55-55 tie. His final two came on a dunk; he added eight rebounds. Charles White, also shaking off foul trouble, scored 10 of his 13 points after intermission. Josh "Scrap" Martin added 11 points, three assists.
Semifinal
At Norristown
Chester 67, Gratz 60: The Bulldogs claimed 10 more rebounds, 44 to 34, but mostly were done in by Karon Burton, who shot 5-for-11 on treys en route to 35 points. Gratz received balanced scoring from Ishmawiyl McFadden (16), Josh "Scrap" Martin and Charles White (15 apiece). Martin finished eight points short of 1,000 for his three-school career (also Dougherty, Prep Charter); he added nine assists and four steals.

CLASS AA
First Round
At Southern
Prep Charter 46, Camp Hill Trinity 45: Marcus Morris collected 12 points and 13 rebounds. His twin, Markieff, added 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the defending state champs, and hit a free throw to provide a four-point lead before Trinity drained a last-second trey. Parrish Grant added 11 points.
At Bethlehem Freedom
Imhotep 62, Easton Notre Dame 38: Imhotep got a dunk from Kashief Edwards just 4 seconds into the game and swept to leads of 11-0 and 30-9. Edwards had 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks. Jermaine Washington (12, five assists) and Tamir Johnson (10) helped the Panthers.
Second Round
At Norristown
Prep Charter 56, Lower Moreland 44: The Huskies started slowly (14-5) deficit, but eventually prevailed thanks to Marcus Morris (16 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks) and his twin, Markieff (12, nine, two).
At Bethlehem Freedom
Imhotep 66, Wilkes-Barre GAR 34: The Panthers stormed out of the gate and maintained that mind-set throughout. Kashief Edwards led the way in points (17), rebounds (12) and blocks (four) while Tamir Johnson added 16 points and seven boards and was especially effective in the tone-setting first quarter rush.
Third Round
At Reading's Geigle Complex
Prep Charter 65, York Catholic 57: PC conquered the challenging task of having to face a team nicknamed Fighting Irish on St. Patrick's Day. Jesse Morgan nailed five consecutive second half shots (two treys included) en route to a 16-point outing while the Morris twins were steady throughout. Marcus totaled 23 points and 11 rebounds while Markieff hustled for 18 points, 13 boards, two assists, five steals and four blocks. Staunch defense by Kevin Radford helped to force YC star Jake Iati into misses on seven of his last nine shots. Radford also went 5-for-6 at the line in the waning moments (for his only points).
At Bethlehem Freedom
Imhotep 70, Wilkes-Barre Bishop Hoban 52: The Argents entered 30-0 and jumped to an 8-0 lead. Imhotep was still reeling from bus problems that kept it from starting warmups until 1 minute after the game was supposed to start. In time, the Panthers rolled. With nine field goals (two dunks), Kashief Edwards scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half while Will Adams (three, 14 points) and Jermaine Washington (two, 16) combined for five post-intermission treys. Hanif Nixon mixed 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Semifinal
At Ben Franklin
Prep Charter 61, Imhotep 48: The Huskies delivered a third-strike blow to their Division C rivals thanks to mostly to the Morris twins. Markieff totaled 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Marcus contributed 15 points, six boards and four assists. Parrish Grant added nine points, four assists and solid ballhandling. For Imhotep, conquered by PC in the Division C finale and a Pub quarterfinal, Kashief Edwards mixed 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, and Tamir Johnson had nine points and eight rebounds.
Final
At Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center
Prep Charter 68, Aliquippa 66: The Huskies, who committed 33 turnovers and ran out of timeouts with 5:31 left in the third quarter, roared back from a 14-point deficit in the final 3:51 to claim a second consecutive title. The Morris twins went the identical route in points and rebounds -- Markieff had 16 and 16; Marcus had 11 and 11. Marcus hit two free throws with six seconds left to give PC just its third lead of the game, then Aliquippa was called for traveling at 1.4. Kevin Radford sniped 4-for-5 on treys en route to 14 points and Parrish Grant had 13 points, four assists.

NORTH PRE-PLAYOFF
(At Ryan)
La Salle 56, Judge 51: After falling behind by 30-17 late in the first half, the Explorers stormed to a 36-15 run and then held on as Judge made a late push. Clay Penecale saved 17 of his 21 points for the second half and Frank Pierson, a spotty shooter all season, went 4-for-5 (two treys) for 10 points. His layup and subsequent three-pointer made it 53-45. The substitute guard also trailed only Matt Crozier (10) in rebounds for La Salle with four; he also managed two assists and two steals. After Bob Zanneo (13) could not connect on a late trey that would have been his fifth, and would have tied the game, Pierson rebounded and passed to Penecale for breakaway layup. Kevin Lynch led Judge with 25 points, thanks mostly to perfect shooting (9-for-9, three threes) from the floor. He scored the Crusaders' first 14 points and had assists on the next two baskets, a trey and a regular.
QUARTERFINALS
(Two North Games at Ryan)
  N. Catholic 53, Ryan 48: The Falcons used balanced scoring (Velton Jones 15, Chris Edwards 14, Andrew Pomager 13) to overcome having to play in their opponent's gym (pre-arranged site). The Falcons were especially effective in grabbing offensive rebounds down the stretch, keeping alive possessions and negating shaky foul shooting. Andrew Rogers scored 17 points for Ryan, which was coached by his brother, Bernie.
Dougherty 68, La Salle 50: A closing run of 13-1 enabled the Cardinals to make this one look like a blowout. Kahlil Mumford and Justin Minter (eight rebounds) scored 16 points apiece and Roberto Townsend made amends for two earlier missed dunks by wolfing down a pair that would have been SportsCenter worthy. On the latter, on a three-quarter-court drive that followed a steal, he purposely bounced the ball and caught it on the way up before thunder-slamming. Clay Penecale (25) led La Salle.
(Two South Games at O'Hara)
Roman 47, SJ Prep 36: The Cahillites used suffocating defense to sentence the Prep to 35 percent shooting (12-for-34) from the floor. Brian Wanamaker scored 16 points. His twin, Bradley, a Pitt signee, totaled 10 points and the same number of rebounds. All 14 points scored by the Kirkland twins came courtesy of Will. Jim Mower (10) led Prep.
Neumann-Goretti 81, Bonner 57: Syracuse-bound best buddies Rick Jackson (11-for-12) and Antonio "Scoop" Jardine halved 44 points as the Saints stormed to victory. There were also co-leaders (Rashad Savage and Jamal Wilson, nine) atop the rebound category. Bonner's Jeff Jones (Virginia) scored 20 points to conclude his career with 1,923, the No. 1 total in CL history. He'd tied the school record with 41 in the Friars' second regular season meeting with N-G.
SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at the Palestra)
Roman 62, Dougherty 44: The Cahillites used relentless defensive pressure, especially against the North MVP, Kahlil Mumford, to claim what evolved into an easy victory. Dougherty shot 14-for-41 and committed 19 turnovers. Roman's Bradley Wanamaker shot 8-for-12 and 6-for-8 for 22 points. Maalik Wayns also shot well (4-for-6, 7-for-8) en route to 17 points. Nick Daggett, with help from Courtney Stanley, held Mumford to seven points. Nos. 6 and 7, on free throws with 3:06 left, froze his career total at 1,001. Roberto Townsend (12) and frosh sixth man Willis Nicholson (10) led Dougherty in scoring. The Cards surrendered 12 of the game's first 14 points and then 10 straight to start the second half after scrambling within 23-19.
Neumann-Goretti 73, N. Catholic 45: Rick Jackson slapped together one of the most dominant performances in city playoff history. He totaled 51 markers in the three main big-man categories, thanks to 26 points, 17 rebounds and eight blocks. Antonio "Scoop" Jardine scored 17 points and dished all 10 of his assists in the second half. Jamal Wilson mixed eight points and as many rebounds. Sixth man Mark Hatty, the football quarterback, scored twice on follows when the game was still competitive and was able to laugh at himself after missing a late-game breakaway dunk; his jump left him short and he pounded the ball against the rim. He promised to attempt no dunks in the final. Lenny Young and Velton Jones halved 22 points for North. The combined 46-point differential was the third highest in CL semis history behind 55 in '01 and 50 in '97.
FINAL
(At the Palestra)
Roman 59, Neumann-Goretti 56:
Just when it appeared the Cahillites were dead meat, with just under six minutes left, they overcame a 10-point deficit by roaring to 11 consecutive points in 1 minute, 40 seconds, and wound up scoring 17 of the game's final 21 points. The win gave 21-year coach Dennis Seddon his 10th title, eclipsing the CL record of nine by Roman's Billy Markward in the 1920s and '30s and preventing N-G's Carl Arrigale from capturing his fifth in seven years. Roman went ahead for good, at 56-54, with 2:22 left as members of the team's two sets of twins did the honors: Will Kirkland (also Wes) scored on a pass from Pitt signee Bradley Wanamaker (also Brian). Will Kirkland was the defender in '06 when Derrick "D.J." Rivera hit his game-winner; he said he wasn't himself for a whole month afterward. Bradley Wanamaker had 17 points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Wayns (13), Will Kirkland (12) and Brian Wanamaker (10) also scored in double figures. N-G's leaders were Syracuse signees/best buddies Rick Jackson (20 points, 18 rebounds, six blocks) and Antonio "Scoop" Jardine (11 assists). Jackson's three-game playoff averages were 22.7, 14 and six. Will Kirkland sank the first of two free throws at 6.4 for a 62-59 lead. Teammate Courtney Stanley grabbed the rebound of the missed second shot, then clanked two FTs of his own. N-G's Jamal Wilson rebounded and passed ahead to sixth man Mark Hatty, who hit the rim with a 24-foot, right-wing trey at the buzzer. As the Cahillites began to celebrate, roughly a half-dozen, liquid-filled plastic bottles were fired onto the court from high above N-G's bench. Roman's contingent sought refuge in the locker room, then later returned to accept the plaque and cut down the net.

Inter-Ac League

Gtn. Academy (8-2)
The suspicion entering the season was that the Inter-Ac race would be wide open because none of the six teams appeared to be extra strong. Exactly correct. The Patriots became the first outright champion since 1980 with a league record as "poor" as 8-2 and their 11 overall losses were believed to be an all-time mark. The crown was decided in a last-night showdown between Malvern and visiting GA, as both entered with 7-2 records. While triumphing in somewhat comfortable fashion, 63-52, the Patriots showed incredible scoring balance thanks to La Salle signee Kyle Griffin (13), Joe Hill and Jeff Holton (12 apiece), D.J. Johnston (10) and Dean Melchionni (nine). Griffin dished six assists and went 7-for-8 at the line, leading the way to a 13-for-15 showing in the fourth quarter. Malvern, stocked almost completely with players who were better in other sports, received 14 points from Joe Hoban. The showcase tournament produced in-control wins over Penn Charter and Malvern. Griffin scored 24 points in the final, lifting the GA portion of his career total to 1,123. (He previously scored 334 at Allentown Central Catholic.) Oddly, Malvern suffered all four of its league losses, including the one in the showcase final, on its home court.
