City Titles

(At Temple's Liacouras Center)
CLASS AA
  Imhotep 59, West Catholic 53 (OT): In the first contest since the series was canceled in 1980, four players did a majority of the scoring. MVP Sam Prescott (26) and Will Adams (22) led Imhotep while Rob Hollomon (24) and Aquil Younger (17) topped West. Prescott added 11 rebounds, six steals and four blocks. Hollomon's outing included a 14-for-19 showing at the line.
CLASS AAA
  Neumann-Goretti 80, Franklin LC 78: MVP Tony Chennault totaled 22 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Saints matched Imhotep's experience -- league champ that barely survived. Tyreek Duren added 18 points, five assists. As he'd been throughout the postseason, Denzel Yard was sensational for FLC with 29 points and four assists. He shot 10-for-14 overall and tied the city's postseason record for treys with seven (in nine attempts); he hit his last right before the buzzer. The Bobcats shot 29-for-29 total and 11-for-19 on threes. Sub Jamil Drake, a sub guard, grabbed seven rebounds.
CLASS AAAA
  Roman 60, Southern 48: Though its best player, Villanova signee Maalik Wayns, was still unavailable (recovering from meniscus surgery) and its leading scorer, Rakeem "Rahk" Brookins, owned just two points, Roman held a 17-point lead late in the third quarter. Frosh Andre Horne (20 points, 13 rebounds) and MVP Koron Reed (18, 10, five dunks) picked up the slack. Kevin Regan and Brookins had eight and seven assists, respectively. Southern's Deshon "Biggie" Minnis collected 19 points, five assists, four steals.

Class AA
  Freire 67, Saul 47: Tyreek Riddick led the way with 17 points. Saul's Tyrell Smith matched that number.
  Bodine 54, Vaux 45: Bodine's Erik Raleigh (24) and Vaux' Zafir Williams (26) were the only double figure scorers.

FIRST ROUND
Class AAAA Quarterfinals
  Southern 64, Edison 42: Deshon "Biggie" Minnis collected 19 points and eight assists while Lamar Speller's 17-point effort included four treys. Luis Martinez, who during the season had hit eight treys in three games, earning himself the nickname "Marthreenez," topped Edison with 13 points.
  Washington 64, Frankford 60 (OT): The Eagles stormed to the road win with the help of a 23-11 edge in the fourth quarter, as paced by Donte Williams (11 of his 20), Dom Conner (8 of 15) and Will McFillin (6 of 14). McFillin's free throws iced it. Dehaven Brown (16) and Darryl Poole (14) led Frankford.
  Bartram 76, Univ. City 73: Tyrone Garland saved 33 of his 38 points for a 50-32 second half. Kevin Garris (20) led UC.
  Olney 61, Fels 60 (OT): Jesse "Booge" Morgan notched 27 points and drained a fourth trey with 0:15 left to win it. He had 12 points over the final 12 minutes and 10 boards total. Drexel signee Shannon Givens topped Fels with 25 points.
Class AAA Quarterfinals
  Franklin LC 74, W. Phila. 52: Denzel Yard (Siena) hustled for 25 points, five assists and five steals. Raymond "Meatball" Nesbitt scored 22 points for West, which entered the playoffs via a coin flip after other staples failed to completely break a four-way tie.
  FitzSimons 82, Roxborough 73: Tyrell Johnson powered his way to 25 points and 17 rebounds while Andrew Reed mixed 20 points with 12 assists and Kion Coats (24) went deep four times. Marquee Griffin (18) topped Roxborough.
  Gratz 65, Bok 50: Antoine "Ness" Bland claimed 10 boards while scoring 17 points and Tyree Smith dealt six assists.
  Eng. and Science 64, Phila. Elec. 32: Marcus Brown (15, 11) and Andre Howard (14, 25) paced the romp in points/rebounds.
Class AA Quarterfinals
  Imhotep 73, Freire 53: Sam Prescott scored eight of his 13 points in a 23-8 first quarter. Will Adams (16) wound up on top. Octavious Booker (12) led Freire.
  Comm. Tech 76, Del-Val 69: Shaquille Shannon scrambled for 19 points, 10 rebounds and three steals and packed 14 of his markers into the final 7:07 as the Phoenix overcame -- you got it -- a seven-point deficit. Sherman Blanford added 16 points, nine boards. D-V's Kevin Mack drained five treys en route to 26 points, Rysheen Dorn shot 11-for-17 for 22 and Khalil Meadows dealt nine assists.
  Prep Charter 65, Franklin 61: Ferg Myrick banged for 26 points and 10 rebounds and Ameen Tanskley, not expected to play (tender ankle), came off the bench in the last minute to pass for a key field goal and hit two clinching free throws. Melvin Dixon (25) sparked the Electrons.
  Straw. Mansion 75, Bodine 49: Darren Lawrence scored 11 of his 16 points in a 38-16 first half. Donte Greene (16) led Bodine.
Class A Quarterfinals
  Math/Civics/Sciences 85, GAMP 41: Jose Ortiz hit a 17-foot jumper with 3:19 left to finish his day with 25 points and reach exactly 1,000 for his career. Zaahir Smith distributed 10 assists. LaRon Byrd had 21 for GAMP, thus concluding his career with 1,684.
  New Media 84, Future 67: Isiah Clark had three treys, six rebounds, four steals and 14 of his 35 points in a 32-18 second quarter. Saadiq Berry (33) led Future.
  Boys' Latin 69, Palumbo 57: With only freshmen and sophomores in its school, BL was almost forced by Pub honchos to drop back to JV competition on the brink of its season opener. Frosh Maurice Watson, son of the same-named coach, had 25 points and eight assists. Isaiah Gans added 11 points, 10 rebounds. For Palumbo, which did not yet have seniors, Mike Sawan scored 18 points.
  Robeson 76, World Comm. 73 (OT): Jay Harris had 29 points and five steals and drained two free throws to force OT. Xavier Brown then went 4-for-4 at the line. Coron Fletcher (22) and Markeith Mont (21) paced WC, which persevered to make the playoffs despite having to forfeit three Pub wins for using an eighth-grader.

ROUND OF 16
Class AAAA Semifinals
  Southern 64, Washington 54: Jamir Hanner blended 17 points and 18 rebounds and Deshon "Biggie" Minnis scored seven points in the fourth quarter while going 5-for-6 at the line. Donte Williams had 23 Washington points.
  Bartram 91, Olney 71: The Braves sniped 11-for-16 on treys while seizing this surprisingly easy road win. Tyrone Garland garnered 34 points (five threes) and six assists and backcourt partner Quasim Jones (27) was almost as productive. Danny Walker hustled for 19 points and 15 rebounds. Olney's leaders were Jesse "Booge" Morgan (28, 11 boards, five assists) and Kadeem Patterson (20); Morgan had scored 47 at Bartram in the teams' regular season meeting.
Class AAA Semifinals
  Franklin LC 73, FitzSimons 71: Denzel Yard scored 34 points and hot help from Nasir Jones (15). Andrew Reed (22) led FitzSimons.
  Gratz 49, Eng. and Science 37: The Bulldogs prevailed thanks to a 32-17 second half. The leaders were Tyree Smith (11) in points, Antoine "Ness" Bland (14) in boards, Bruce Hanner (five) in assists and Joe Reid (four) in steals. Marcus Brown (19) led E&S' four scorers.
Class AA Semifinals
  Imhotep 66, Comm. Tech 58: Sam Prescott scored 19 points, Will Adams saved eight of his 15 for a 23-15 fourth quarter and Parrish Grant mixed 10 points with as many assists. Shaquille Shannon (18) led CT.
  Prep Charter 55, Straw. Mansion 53: Soph Ameen Tanksley, despite a tender ankle, shot 6-for-7 and 10-for-13 points for 24 points (13 in the last quarter) as the Huskies notched the road win, then were pressed into the northwest corner of the gym by Mansion fans, some of whom fired plastic bottles. The only injury was suffered by assistant Skip Robinson (gash on ear, minimal bleeding). Ferg Myrick had 12 points, eight rebounds. Mansion's Devonte "DJ" Newbill posted 18 points and seven assists.
Class A Semifinals
  Math/Civics/Sciences 85, New Media 39: Jose Ortiz scored 11 of his 29 points in a 26-9 first quarter. Zaahir Smith added 21 points while Jeff Lord grabbed 13 rebounds.
  Boys' Latin 89, Robeson 73: Maurice Watson saved 13 of his 27 points for a 31-17 fourth quarter while nailing down the road win. BL shot 31-for-42 at the line to Robeson's 13-for-29. Jay Harris and Dom Owens halved 40 points for the losers.

QUARTERFINALS
(Two Games at Franklin)
Class AAAA Final
  Southern 69, Bartram 65: Sub Shaquille Gaskins, who figured he'd hit only three all season beforehand, nailed two consecutive fourth quarter treys and shortly thereafter hit a mid-range jumper to make it 62-54 with 3:41 left. He also took a charge on Bartram star Tyrone Garland (22) with 5:52 left; it was his fourth foul and he went scoreless thereafter. Jamir Hanner totaled 15 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Lamar Speller and Haywood Henderson halved 12 assists. Bartram's Danny Walker swept 19 rebounds.
Class AAA Final
  Franklin LC 51, Gratz 48: Denzel Yard bagged 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists as the Bobcats became one of the few teams in the last quarter century to defeat Gratz twice in the same season. After evading a double-team, Yard hit Turhan Griffin for the winning layup with 2.1 remaining. Basir Fulmore added 11 points, eight rebounds, four steals. For Gratz, Tyree Smith scored 17 points while Antoine "Ness" Bland and Joe Reid halved 20 boards.

Class AA Final
  Imhotep 72, Prep Charter 49: Will Adams (18), Sam Prescott (16) and Parrish Grant (14) paced Imhotep, which roared to a 57-34 edge over the final three quarters. Grant made seven of the Panthers' 20 steals. Only Ferg Myrick (11) reached double figures in points for PC. He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Class A Final
  Math/Civics/Sciences 69, Boys' Latin 42: The Mighty Elephants coasted behind Jose Ortiz (20 points, nine rebounds), Andre Thomas (14 apiece) and Jeff Lord (nine, 15). Frosh Maurice Watson led BL with 14 points, but shot 6-for-26.

SEMIFINALS
(At Franklin)
  Franklin LC 57, Southern 49: Once again, Denzel Yard willed a team with much less overall talent to victory by shooting 10-for-17 (two treys) en route to 24 points, and adding five rebounds, two assists, two steals. Nasir Jones added 13 points. Lamar Speller and Shaquille Gaskins scored 15 points apiece for Southern while Deshon "Biggie" Minnis dealt six assists and Jamir Hanner claimed 11 rebounds.

  Imhotep 84, Math/Civics/Sciences 55: The Panthers spotted MC&S a 23-14 lead after eight minutes, then imposed their Will -- Adams, that is -- and frolicked. Adams finished with 27 points, thanks in part to six treys. Sam Prescott was also major with 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Jose Ortiz (19) topped the losers.

(At Temple's Liacouras Center)
  Imhotep 49, Franklin LC 43: This first-ever Pub final featuring NO neighborhood schools went to the charter in its fifth year of membership. A largely forgettable game became a sweetheart in the fourth quarter and there was major excitement with 42.3 remaining after Denzel Yard hit a trey to draw FLC within 43-42. Thereafter, game MVP Sam Prescott (24 points, just like Yard) went 6-for-9 at the line to assure the title. Overall, he shot 7-for-13 and 10-for-15 while adding 13 rebounds and three apiece of steals and blocks. Yard's line included four boards, two assists and three steals. Yard’s percentage of FLC’s points (55.8) was the highest in a Pub final since FLC’s Rasiheed “Noot” Arnold managed 60.7 (34 of 56) in ’94 vs. Gratz. Overall, Yard poured in 132 points in five playoffs for 44.3 percent of 298. In this game he was the only Bobcat with more than one field goal and the other guys combined to shoot 6-for-26. Imhotep's Parrish Grant Grant finished with 10 points, five assists and two steals while likely becoming the first player in Pub history to start for championship teams at two schools (also Prep Charter in ’07). A year earlier, North Catholic’s Velton Jones had become the first guy to start for title teams in two leagues (also Gratz in ’06).

  Wood 49, Conwell-Egan 37: At Ryan, Fran Dougherty posted 14 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks as the Vikings gained their second regular-playoff win in 43 seasons of CL membership. Joe Getz, Brian O'Grady (11 apiece) and Tim Fahy (10) also scored in double figures. For C-E, making its third playoff appearance in 46 CL seasons, Isaac Robinson scored 14 points.
  W. Catholic 50, Dougherty 45: At Carroll, Rob Hollomon (19) shot 9-for-10 at the line en route to 13 points in the fourth quarter. Ade Barek added nine points, nine rebounds and six blocks. Only Brandyn Wims (18) reached doubles for Dougherty.
  La Salle 32, SJ Prep 30: At O'Hara, Eddie Joyner-Mitchell scored the Explorers' final four points on two free throws and a buzzer-beating layup; they sandwiched Mike Leithead's midrange jumper. Only La Salle's Malik West (10) scored in double figures. This was only the second time since 1950 that a CL playoff produced as few as 62 points.
  Bonner 45, Ryan 32: At Dougherty, Jamal Melvin mixed 13 points and five assists and Bill Scanlan scored eight of his 10 points in a 32-10 second half. Ryan (Eric Fleming 11) played without star guard Rus Slawter (ankle injury).

QUARTERFINALS

  N. Catholic 69, Bonner 49: Woody Redding set the tone with 12 points, six assists, three steals and just one turnover while 6-9 soph Rakeem Christmas contributed 19 points and four blocks. Bonner's Brian Boyle hit two treys en route to 12 points.
  Roman 73, La Salle 49: Rakeem "Rahk" Brookins exploded for 31 points, shooting 9-for-15 (three treys) and 10-for-13. He also had five of the Cahillites' 22 steals; Kawaun Chavis led the way with six. Koron Reed totaled 13 points, six rebounds. La Salle's Eddie Joyner-Mitchell and Todd Stokley halved 24 points.
(Doubleheader at O'Hara)
  Carroll 51, W. Catholic 48: Andre Wilburn collected nine points, 13 rebounds and two blocks and hit a free throw with 1.7 seconds left after West committed an inbounding violation. Soph Juan'ya Green had 17 points and three steals. West's leaders were soph Aquil Younger (14, four assists) and Ade Barek (12, 10 rebounds, five blocks).
  Neumann-Goretti 64, Wood 46: Sixth-man Lamin Fulton, a soph, shot 8-for-9 (4-for-5 on treys) en route to 21 points. Tony Chennault totaled 17 points, six rebounds, four assists. Tyreek Duren added 10 points, six boards, eight assists, three steals. Wood's Fran Dougherty scored 17 points.

SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at the Palestra)
  Neumann-Goretti 77, N. Catholic 62: Danny Stewart powered home five dunks in an 18-point performance as the Saints cruised. He added eight rebounds and enjoyed watching his freshman brother, Derrick, blocking a dunk attempt by North's 6-9 Rakeem Christmas. Tyreek Duren added 15 points, five assists. North's leaders were Jack O'Neill (18, eight rebounds, four assists) and Christmas (14, seven boards, seven rejections).
  Roman 63, Carroll 59 (OT): Kevin Regan, who said he'd struggled with his shooting all season, lit up the Big House with 24 points on 10-for-15 marksmanship that included 4-for-7 sniping on treys. He also notched a late block to help force OT. Rakeem "Rahk" Brookins added 13 points and nine assists. Andre Wilburn (14), Juan'ya Green (13), Kasheef Festus (12) and DJ Irving (10) scored in double digits for Carroll and Ben Mingledough just missed (eight). Festus (12) and Wilburn (10) led in boards. Brookins passed to sub Abdul King for the first points of OT and Roman led the rest of the way.

FINAL
(At the Palestra)
  Neumann-Goretti 86, Roman 53: The Saints stormed to their fifth title of the decade while lifting their finals record therein to 3-2 against Roman. Tyreek Duren was the headliner. Aside from shooting 10-for-16 from the floor en route to 26 points, he forced Rakeem "Rahk" Brookins (24 points) to go 8-for-31 total and 2-for-11 on threes. Andre "Scooter" Gillette, the lone senior rotation member, contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Danny Stewart was almost perfect (6-for-7, 4-for-4) while scoring 16 points and Tony Chennault added 19 points, seven boards, four dishes. Villanova-bound Roman star Maalik Wayns (recent meniscus surgery) received word four hours prior to gametime that he would not be cleared to play. Andre Horne (15) also scored in double figures for Roman while Koron Reed and Kevin Regan halved 18 rebounds. In '91, South MVP Marvin Harrison led Roman past La Salle, 70-36, in the final. This 33-point setback came on the same day he was released by the Colts.

Gtn. Academy (9-1)
  In the next-to-last game of the season, the visiting Patriots destroyed the only team that still had a chance to force a two-way tie for the title, Chestnut Hill, by 53-28. Cameron Ayers led the way with 14 points, five assists and three steals. Jack McDonnell (14) and Dean Melchionni (12) also scored in double figures while senior sub Jimmy Fenerty, a guard and son of coach Jim Fenerty, grabbed a team-high five rebounds. CHA's Gary Lawrence, presented a special ball beforehand in celebration of 1,000 career points, managed 15. GA went to 9-1 three days later with a 62-46 win at Penn Charter as Fenerty hit three treys en route to a career-high 13 points. The league's showcase tourney was scrapped and all six teams participated in the 16-team Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament, with the last two rounds played at Malvern. GA reached the final and fell in overtime to Friends' Central, 60-58, despite Jeff Holton's 24 points. The loss left all rotation members and coach Fenerty in tears and was likely the first time in league history that an outright champ experienced a devastating loss to end the season.

  Camp Hill 66, Boys' Latin 56: Point guard Maurice Watson, son of coach Maurice Watson, mad-bombed six treys en route to 34 points, thus finishing his freshman season with 505. Wafeeq Jamal (11) added a trio of three-pointers.  
First Round
At SJ Prep
  Math, Civics & Sciences 48, Church Farm 44: Ramone Williams (15) and Jeff Lord (14) picked up the scoring slack as headliners Jose Ortiz and Zaahir Smith combined for just seven points.
Second Round
At Garden Spot, New Holland
  Greenwood 54, Math, Civics and Sciences 51: Jeff Lord (14), Jose Ortiz (12) and Zaahir Smith (10) scored in double figures for MC&S. Lord added 15 rebounds, five blocks. On a late move, Ortiz drew a blocking call from the ref closest to the play. Another overruled him, saying Ortiz had traveled.

  Imhotep 55, Delone Catholic 48: Sub David Appolon hit a third quarter trey after DC advanced within one. Sam Prescott (Marist) and Will Adams (Towson) notched 17 and 13 points, respectively.  
At Bonner
  W. Catholic 50, Salisbury Twp. 42: With 15 points, Rob Hollomon raised his career total to 1,003 and became just the second hoops-football athlete in city history (also '06 Ryan grad Joe Zeglinski) to post 1,000 points and 3,000 rushing yards. Ade Barek, a native of London, England, with Nigerian roots, added six points, nine rebounds and four steals. Aquil Younger had 12 points, five rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
At Garden Spot, New Holland
  Prep Charter 48, Pequea Valley 41: Ferg Myrick tallied 21 points, lifting his career total to 1,012. Khalil Raines made four steals. The Huskies survived despite going 8-for-22 at the line.
At Hersheypark Arena
  Trinity 64, Straw. Mansion 49: Darren "DL" Lawrence (20) and Devonte "DJ" Newbill (10) reached double figures for Mansion, which was outscored at the foul line, 20-1.
Second Round
Doubleheader at Hershey High
  Prep Charter 73, Loyalsock Twp. 67: Despite playing with blurred version throughout -- he lost his contacts -- the nearsighted Ferg Myrick managed to contribute 15 points and 12 rebounds. He said he felt pretty stupid several times after realizing he tried to rebound shots that had already gone in. Ameen Tanksley shot 7-for-10 (three treys, of PC's eight) and 8-for-10 for 25 points. Kyle Stanton went 3-for-3 on treys.
  Hughesville 61, W. Catholic 58: Right down the road from where he'd experienced vast disappointment three months earlier in the state championship football game, star rusher/wing guard Rob Hollomon relived the pain as his last-second trey misconnected. He finished with 18 points, four assists, three steals. Aquil Younger shot 4-for-8 (one trey) and 11-for-12 for 20 points while adding four steals. Each team hit two free throws with one-tenth of a second remaining after Hughesville was fouled and was then assessed a tech for rushing the court. The Burrs did not get off a last shot. West and Prep Charter had 20 fans total in attendance. Neither brought cheerleaders.
At Spring-Ford
  Imhotep 58, Notre Dame (Green Pond) 53: Sub David Appolon (16) and Sam Prescott (12) each hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds to help the Panthers advance. Will Adams added 11 points.
Quarterfinal
At Southern
  Imhotep 58, Prep Charter 55: After committing a bad turnover (too-long football pass) on an inbound pass with 14 seconds remaining, Parrish Grant atoned by converting a one-and-one at 4.3 and then held his breath as PC's Zaahid Holloman hit the heel of the rim with a buzzer-beating trey. Grant had 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals and shot 4-for-4 (two treys) for 10 first quarter points. Sam Prescott managed 14 points, six boards, two assists, three steals and four blocks. For PC, Ferg Myrick scored 14 points and Tyree "Chuck" Harris snagged 15 rebounds.
Semifinal
At East Pennsboro, Enola
  Imhotep 53, Hughesville 46: Imhotep had the support of just 27 fans in a jam-packed, 1,436-seat facility. But in the waning moments, they were the only ones making noise. Parrish Grant totaled 17 points, six assists and five steals and was noteworthy down the stretch with a one-and-one conversion and a long pass to Ivory Wells for a layup. Kenny Battle shot 5-for-6 for 10 points and Erik Copes squeezed six boards into the fourth quarter. The win was Imhotep's 30th in succession.
Final
At Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center
  Imhotep 75, Pittsburgh North Catholic 67 (2 OTs): Imhotep surrendered the game's first 12 points, then regrouped for five points in the last 11 seconds of the first quarter thanks to two steals by sub David Appolon (15 points). It wasn't easy after that, but the Panthers kept battling to collect the Public League's third Class AA title in four years. It was also No. 3 for point guard Parrish Grant (10 points), a sub for Prep Charter in '06 and a starter in '07. Sam Prescott was terrific with 21 points, 13 rebounds and five steals and he shot 8-for-8 at the line from the fourth quarter on (while his teammates were going 7-for-17). Kenny Battle (12) and Will Adams (11) also scored in double figures and Erik Copes, a 6-8 soph, added seven blocks to 11 rebounds. Four of PNC's starters were related (son/nephews) of coach Dave Long.

At Southern
  Neumann-Goretti 98, Steelton-Highspire 71: Deep subs played extensively after the Saints' rotation guys rolled. Tony Chennault totaled 25 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Tyreek Duren (14) and Andre "Scooter" Gillette (12) also scored in double figures.  
At Southern
  Strath Haven 76, Franklin LC 66: Siena signee Denzel Yard (1,031 for career) and Nasir Jones halved 42 points. Yard added four assists and three steals while Jones grabbed seven rebounds. 
At Norristown
  Carroll 56, Phoenixville 50: This game started roughly a half-hour earlier than N-G's on a Friday night, so the Patriots claimed the Catholic League's first state tournament win. Kasheef Festus grabbed 11 rebounds and shot 9-for-12 en route to 20 points while DJ Irving (also 20) went 5-for-9 on treys and Juan'ya Green dished six assists.

At Reading High's Geigle Complex

  Carroll 62, Shamokin 51: Juan'ya Green paced the Patriots' 38-point second half with 14 of his 16. DJ Irving finished with 15 points, four steals. Carroll enjoyed a 15-0 run in the third quarter.

  Carroll 70, Neumann-Goretti 65: Carroll had dropped 18 in a row to the Saints, counting a pair of playoffs. But on Friday the 13th, it finally experienced good fortune in the series thanks to DJ Irving (26 points, perfect swish from three-quarters court as the third quarter ended) and a 28-for-36 performance at the line (N-G was 9-for-22). Juan'ya Green scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. Pat Daly led the bench brigade by thrice taking charges. For N-G, Tony Chennault rang up 10 of his 21 points in the final 4:09.

  Carroll 65, York Suburban 57: Miffed after learning that YS intended to cover him with a guard, 6-5, 235-pound Kasheef Festus bullied his way to 19 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 4-for-4 and 11-for-13 and copied the free-throw style of Kobe Bryant; he made the change in practice the day before and nailed 20 in a row. DJ Irving (16) and Juan'ya Green (14) also scored in double figures and the Patriots shot 19-for-26 on foul shots in the final quarter.

  Carroll 75, Greensburg Salem 54: The Patriots, who had to capture a winner's in-loser's out District 12 consolation just to make the tournament, completed a strong state-title run with amazing balance. Kasheef Festus (18), DJ Irving (17), Juan'ya Green (16) and Andre Wilburn (12) reached double figures in points and Ben Mingledough came close with eight. All five of those guys also claimed from five to seven rebounds. Carroll won the middle quarters, 41-20. Irving made seven steals. Green had five assists. This was the second game of a night doubleheader. In the opener, O'Hara's girls (AAAA) missed out on a chance to become the Catholic League's first state champ in a loss to Mt. Lebanon. The next night, Carroll's girls completed an emphatic sweep of state titles by swamping Lampeter-Strasburg, 68-45.

  Central Bucks South 62, Roman 57: Villanova-bound Maalik Wayns, a McDonald's All-American, scored 16 points in his return to action after missing nine games (right-knee meniscus surgery) and backcourt partner Rakeem "Rahk" Brookins was even more productive with 21. However, the Cahillites shot just 10-for-21 at the line in the second half and lost to District 1's eighth seed, which was coming off three straight losses.

  Plymouth-Whitemarsh 47, Southern 45: Shaquille Gaskins scored seven consecutive points to rally the Rams into a 40-40 tie, but they then fell short -- as did Deshon "Biggie" Minnis' last-second shot that would have forced OT.
At Council Rock South
  Pennsbury 51, N. Catholic 26: North made no steals in the first 25-plus minutes and never did get to the foul line. Jack O'Neill scored 10 points.
At Pleasant Valley, Brodheadsville
  Bartram 72, Pocono Mountain East 67 (OT): Tyrone Garland exploded for 40 points and scored eight of his team's 10 in the final 44 seconds of regulation, helping it storm back from an eight-point deficit. His trey with 3.3 seconds left forced OT. Quasim Jones scored 15 points and Danny Walker mixed 10 rebounds with seven points.

  Penn Wood 78, Bartram 53: The victors stormed to 35 of the game's final 44 points. Tyrone Garland scored 21 points for Bartram, thus concluding his junior season with 750 and raising his career total to 1,510.
