City Titles

AA
(At Northeast)
Imhotep 51, W. Catholic 42: In something of a snoozer -- Imhotep was still reeling from an exhausting march to a second straight Pub crown; West hadn't played in 2 1/2 weeks -- sixth man Bakari White hit two treys while scoring eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter and prevented Aquil Younger (22 points, five threes, four assists) from causing late damage. Junior Erik Copes, already committed to George Washington, shot 6-for-6 (two dunks) for 12 points while adding seven boards and four blocks. Tyhiem "Redz" Perrin had 10 points, six rebounds. West's Kiwan Murray managed eight/six.
AAA
(At Lincoln)
Neumann-Goretti 75, Dobbins 44: Playing without Wake Forest signee Tony Chennault (ejected from CL final), the Saints marched nevertheless as Lamin Fulton, the lone junior starter, popped in a season 25 points and drained three quick treys to help N-G zoom away from a 10-10 tie. Tyreek Duren (La Salle) was a whirlwind with 19 points, eight assists, six steals. Danny Stewart (Rider) added 14 points, 15 rebounds, five steals and six blocks. Dobbins' Jerrell Wright packed 20 of his 23 points into the first half. He also grabbed 15 rebounds. The other Mustangs shot 7-for-33. Played on Friday night, this was the first postseason game in Lincoln's bright as Broadway new gym.
AAAA
(At Lincoln)
La Salle 42, Bartram 40: Troy Hockaday scored 15 points and, as part of a box-and-one, helped to hold Virginia Tech-bound Tyrone Garland, at that point the No. 3 career scorer in city history (2,184), to eight as the Explorers won a hoops CT for the first time since a Tom Gola-led team did so in 1950. With Hockaday defending, Garland missed a late trey and Joe Brown (nine rebounds) added a free throw at 1.1. Steve Collins shot 4-for-7 and 4-for-4 for 12 points. Bartram's leaders were Quasim Jones in points (12), and Darrell Lane (10) and Devin Moore (nine) in rebounds. The Braves were missing two starters due to assorted issues.

Public League

Bartram 75, Olney 72: On the Braves' final possession, Tyrone Garland (33; late in regular season became the city's fifth 2,000-point career scorer) momentarily lost possession while penetrating, then fed Quasim Jones for the game-winning corner trey. Class AA Quarterfinals
Straw. Mansion 74, Freire 44: Recent Marquette commit Devonte' "DJ" Newbill raised his career total to 2,011 with a 24-point effort. Eric Jefferson had eight rebounds, five blocks. Malik Wesley (17) led Freire.
Franklin 67, Vaux 63 (2 OTs): These North Philly rivals got after it, but good. Four Cougars, led by frosh Rysheed Jordan (17), hit double digits.

Prep Charter 58, Comm. Tech 57: Following monumental amounts of snow, with 91 total games still unplayed, the Pub honchos came close to canceling the rest of the regular season and freezing the standings. If that had happened, PC would not have made the playoffs. In this one, as the seventh seed, they shocked the No. 2 Phoenix on a James Cole tip-in with 0:04 remaining.
Class A Quarterfinals
Math/Civics/Sciences 70, World Comm. 60: Kwahmere Gredic totaled 20 points and five assists for the Mighty Elephants, who rolled to a 35-17 halftime pad.   Boys' Latin 77, Palumbo 37: Honored beforehand for recently having become just the second sophomore (also Strawberry Mansion's Maureece Rice) in city history to reach 1,000 career points, Maurice Watson Jr., son of the coach, added 19 more. All 11 of Isaiah Gans' points came in a 42-21 first half. Palumbo's Anthony Wallace scored 12 points. Devin Uqdah claimed 10 boards.

Bartram 78, Univ. City 61: Tyrone Garland scrapped for 27 points (three treys) and five apiece of rebounds/assists. Zaahir Allen (17), Devin Moore (14) and Quasim Jones (12) also scored in double figures while Allen (six) and Jones (five) also peppered the assist column.
Class AAA Semifinals

Dobbins 78, Phila. Electrical 65: This one dragged on and on and on for 2 hours, 2 minutes, as the teams combined to shoot 87 free throws in all, with 56 in the last quarter. Dobbins went 17-for-36 at the line in that session and wasn't made to pay for the inaccuracy. Jerrell Wright finished with 24, 18 rebounds and nine blocks. Soph Walter Lawrence posted 25 points and nine steals while classmate Courtland Gilliam had 13 points. Carrington Ward led PE with 23 points. In all, Dobbins went 25-for-51 at the line to PE's 24-for-36.
Class AA Semifinals
Imhotep 53, Prep Charter 49: Tyhiem "Redz" Perrin collected 12 points and 11 boards and his two free throws at 0:15 provided a 51-46 lead. Ameen Tanksley added 17 points and Terrell Johnson made four steals. Mark Wilmer (14) led the Huskies.
Franklin 63, Straw. Mansion 60: After losing volunteer coach Stan Laws, who'd been directing day-to-day operations all season, in the aftermath of a disagreement with principal Lois Powell Mondesire, the 23-0 Knights suffered a stunning defeat on their home floor. Franklin's Jeff Giddings scored 12 of his 20 points in a 26-19 fourth quarter. Mansion's Devonte' "DJ" Newbill managed 21 points.
Class A Semifinals

Math/Civics/Sciences 69, New Media 61: This one took place in two parts. A leaky window, part of a sloping roof, at the former Berean Institute, 19th and Girard, halted Day One proceedings with 7:54 left in the fourth quarter and MC&S on top, 63-48. Before 42 spectators and MC&S' cheerleaders, play resumed at 1:30 (the refs were scheduled to work girls' games elsewhere at 3:15) as NM's Bryton Hawthorne hit the first of two free throws. The Jaguars got as close as six points. Andre Thomas scored four of his 15 points in Part Two. Chris Stokes (five treys) packed all 19 of his into Part One. NM's Isiah Clark scored 21 total points and had four steals in the fourth quarter. Hawthorne also launched the last shot, missing a three.

QUARTERFINALS
Class AAAA Final
(At Franklin)
Bartram 89, Frankford 87: Mike Burton-Young, a 5-5 junior who did not see action until franchise guard Tyrone Garland fouled out with 2:38 left in the first OT, finished with nine points, two assists and one steal. Darrell Robinson, the seventh man, added four points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Regulation ended at 61-61. Bartram rallied from a five-point deficit in the first OT and Frankford came back from four in the second. Only four total points were tallied in the third. Burton-Young went 4-for-4 at the line in the fourth extra session. After missing two free throws at 5.4, Robinson grabbed his own rebound and headed back to the line at 2.8. This time he made one and Devin Moore intercepted Frankford's final inbound pass. Garland scored 18 points. Zaahir Allen totaled 20 points, 11 rebounds. Dehaven Brown (20), Terrell Clark (18, 15 rebounds) and Carl Wallace (17) led Frankford, which shot 29-for-88 and 21-for-38 to Bartram's 29-for-73, 24-for-36.
Class AAA Final
(At Franklin)
Dobbins 58, Gratz 57 (OT): In the first game of a doubleheader, Jerrell Wright powered for 21 points, 16 rebounds and eight blocks as the Mustangs, despite committing 28 turnovers, going 12-for-27 at the line and coughing off a 48-41 lead over the last 2:06 of regulation, advanced to a final for the first time since 1987. Basir Fulmore added 11 points and four steals. After missing his first four free throws, most badly, soph Walter Lawrence hit one at 16.1 to force OT. In OT, a three by Fred Jones and Fulmore's hard drive provided a five-point lead. Gratz rallied and the second of two treys by Tyree Smith (21 points, 10 rebounds) made it 58-57 at 4.2. Dobbins' Khalil Curtis missed two free throws at 2.2, rebounder Antoine "Ness" Bland (15 points, 17 boards) called time at 1.7 and Andrew Moye missed a falling-out-of-bounds trey at the buzzer. Sub Kiari Saulsbury sparked Gratz with nine points, six steals. In OT, no one noticed that the clock operator put 5:00 on the scoreboard rather than 4:00. At 3:01, the remaining time was reduced to 2:01.
Class AA Final
(At Southern)
Imhotep 65, Franklin 45: David Appolon was electric with 23 points, six assists and seven steals while Ameen Tanksley, Tyhiem "Redz" Perrin (12 apiece) and Erik Copes (eight) paced a 40-16 advantage on the glass. Tanksley (14) and Copes (10) also reached double figures in points. Kenny Bey-Brown (19) was the only Electron to surpass 10 points.

SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at Southern)
  Imhotep 66, Math/Civics/Sciences 52:
Due to the earlier snow miseries, the semis were played the day after the quarters. Ameen Tanksley cruised for 26 points and 12 rebounds as the Panthers mostly coasted. Co-star David Appolon didn't score until 4:35 remained in the third quarter, then finished with 15 points. Erik Copes (cut under eye) and Tyhiem “Redz” Perrin (banged-up hand) halved 14 rebounds despite missing some time. For MC&S, Thomas Moore (25 in quarterfinal) failed to score until just after Appolon managed to do so and Kwahmere Gredic wound up leading the way with 15 points.
Bartram 75, Dobbins 63: Dijon Wright shot 4-for-5 for eight points, grabbed six rebounds, prevented Dobbins star Jerrell Wright from wreaking major havoc (14, 11) and provided great entertainment on a foul-line visit by smashing one shot directly off the left side of the glass, then airballing the next. "I hope they burn it," he said, speaking of a tape anyone might have had. Tyrone Garland hit three treys and went 8-for-9 at the line for 23 points while adding four assists, five steals. Zaahir Allen added 18 points and Quasim Jones (14) was 8-for-8 at the line. Basir Fulmore (21) topped Dobbins. There was no late-game drama. People began departing with 2:17 left.

Five others scored from six to nine points and 17 markers were provided by subs (Bakari White nine, Earl Brown eight). The others combined to go 5-for-37 from the floor.  27 points and drained a fourth trey with 0:15 left to win it. He had 12 points over the final 12 minutes and 10 boards total. Drexel signee Shannon Givens topped Fels with 25 points.

FIRST ROUND
(Home Sites)
  N. Catholic 66, Judge 64:
In the Falcons' final game in their famous Pit, Bobby Makor beat the buzzer (maybe, there was MAJOR doubt) with a mid-range, right-wing jumper that was finally ruled good by referee L.B. Rebstock three-plus seconds after the ball passed through the net. Makor notched 18 points, five rebounds and two steals. This was not his family's first brush with a "final" NC sporting event. His sophomore brother, Michael, was a starting lineman for the grid squad, which topped Frankford in its finale, played at La Salle University. Star linebacker David D. Williams grabbed this one's final rebound after Judge's Nick Sullivan hit one of two free throws at 36.3. Six-nine junior Seamus Radtke led Judge with 17 points, seven rebounds, six blocks. Joe Kehoe (16) hit three of his four threes in the fourth quarter.
SJ Prep 57, Bonner 45: Joe Nardi's 23-point outing was highlighted by five treys. Steve Vasturia and Connor McIntyre halved 18 points and the former added nine rebounds. Jamal Melvin (16) and Keefer Francis (12) topped visiting Bonner.
Wood 55, W. Catholic 46: Brian O'Grady powered for 18 points and 15 rebounds and Joe Getz mixed 10 points, seven assists. Aquil Younger (21) was the only visiting player in double figures.
Dougherty 64, Conwell-Egan 53: In a game that could have been their finale, the visiting Cardinals placed three guys in double figures -- Brandyn Wims (12), Brandon Brown (11), Ryan Colbert (10) -- and three more scored at least eight. Brown posted nine markers in a 29-16 first half. Ike Robinson led C-E with 15 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks. Shortly before gametime, coach Rick Sabol was informed by an administrator that one of his key players would be unavailable (school issue).

QUARTERFINALS
(Doubleheader at Ryan)
  Carroll 61, Wood 40:
Ben Mingledough (17) and DJ Irving (15) paced the scoring while Juan'ya Green (eight) and Irving (four) helped the Patriots post 15 assists. Wood, which received 17 points from Joe Getz and 11 points/12 rebounds from Brian O'Grady, missed its first 10 shots of the third quarter and wound up being outscored, 12-2.
La Salle 54, N. Catholic 43: Shooting jumpers lefthanded and layups righthanded, Joe Brown went 6-for-8 en route to 15 points while also claiming a game-high 10 rebounds. He posted three of his field goals in a 17-11 fourth quarter. Troy Hockaday added 15 points. In what everyone feared was North's final game (the archdiocese is closing it come June), Mike Terry collected 16 points and the smallest Falcon, Woody Redding, scored his team's last points on a follow with 1:13 left. Sub Kerry Shields missed the last shot.
(Doubleheader at Carroll)
Neumann-Goretti 89, Dougherty 58: The Saints sniped 10-for-15 on treys and Tony Chennault (24) led four double-figure scorers. Mustafaa Jones (16) went deep four times, Danny Stewart totaled 15 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks, and Tyreek Duren mixed 15 points with four assists. Brandyn Wims (16, seven assists) and Jamal Nwaniemeka (14) led Dougherty in the school's final game. The Cardinals' final points came on a trey by point guard Dawan Earle with 0:59 showing.
SJ Prep 42, Roman 41: After getting burned along the left baseline by sub guard Daiquan Walker for a layup, with 11 seconds remaining, that gave Roman a 41-39 lead, Joe Nardi took a pass from Sean Brophy and beat the buzzer by banking home a straight-on trey from a shade behind the arc. It was the first CL playoff decided by a last-second trey that reversed a deficit. Afterward, Nardi said he'd been guilty of double-dribbling. The win was No. 200 for coach William "Speedy" Morris in just nine Prep seasons. Nardi and Roman's Rakeem "Rahk" Brookins scored 20 points apiece.

SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at the Palestra)
  Carroll 51, La Salle 47:
With 5:48 left in the second quarter, star point guard DJ Irving suffered what was proven the next day to be a broken right hand. After missing about eight total minutes, he returned and spent the rest of the game serving, as he put it, "as a decoy." However, he did contribute a steal and 60-foot drive for a layup deposited with his left hand. Vince Mostardi passed to Anthony Butler for a layup that made it 49-47, then Butler added two free throws after La Salle could not connect on a layup and foul line jumper. Juan'ya Green contributed 17 points and four assists. For La Salle, Joe Brown scored 12 points and Eddie Mitchell dealt six assists.
Neumann-Goretti 74, SJ Prep 60: Tony Chennault was dominant with 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Danny Stewart (15, nine boards) and Tyreek Duren (14, three assists) also had strong outings. The Prep fired 31 treys and hit 14, with Joe Nardi (27 points) leading the way (7-for-12; most successes ever in CL playoff action). Mike Fee added a 4-for-6 showing. Nardi also had five assists and Connor McIntyre grabbed six rebounds.

FINAL
(At the Palestra)
Neumann-Goretti 75, Carroll 59: The Saints became just the second team in the CL's 91-season history to roar through the regular season and playoffs with a perfect record. Roman was 34-0 in 1990 and '91. N-G's mark was 38-0. Though Carroll was playing without star point guard DJ Irving (Boston U.), who broke his hand in the semifinals, it stood within five points, 51-46, with 1:29 left in the third quarter when N-G's Tony Chennault (Wake Forest) and Carroll's Ben Mingledough received double-tech ejections for their involvement in pushing/chirping that followed a hard foul on Chennault by Vince Mostardi. Tyreek Duren (La Salle) took over after Chennault's departure, scoring 14 of his 19 points. Danny Stewart (Rider) added 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks for N-G. Mingledough (16 points, nine rebounds) and Juan'ya Green (20 points, five assists, four steals) topped Carroll. N-G won its three playoffs by an average of 20.3 points and its victory margin for all 19 league contests was 30.1 (1,642-1,070). It reached 100 points three times and 90 seven times. The title was the school's sixth in 10 seasons; all were achieved while wearing road uniforms.

Inter-Ac League

Chestnut Hill (10-0)
The Blue Devils (nee Hillers) followed an incredible football season (first share of league title) with an even better hoops campaign (first outright title AND a perfect record at 10-0). They clinched a tie in Game No. 8, collecting a 46-25 win at Penn Charter. Their last two games were against teams in the bottom half of the standings. Episcopal provided stiff opposition before falling, 46-45, and Haverford School was tamed the following day, 46-38. At PC, CHA trailed, 10-7, when its Kingsley Krazies student rooters roared into the gym and seized control. Properly inspired, the Blue Devils set sail on a 16-3 run as Todd Cramer scored eight of his 10 points and dealt two of his three assists. Malik Garner led the scoring against Episcopal and Haverford with 13, then 11. Cramer (10.4) was the lone CHA player to average double figures in league play. That was the lowest top average for a league champ since at least 1968. The average score of CHA's league games was 45.3-35.6. Malvern finished second at 8-2. Due to weather issues, the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament was changed from a 16-team tournament to two eight-teamers. GA gained a certain measure of revenge by beating the Blue Devils, 51-36, in the main tourney's semifinal round. It then lost the final to Friends' Central, 72-52.

Second Round
At Coatesville

Reading Central Catholic 83, Math, Civics and Sciences 53: The Mighty Elephants were whistled for as many as seven technical fouls (reports varied) and the game was halted with 13.9 seconds left when senior point guard Kwahmere Gredic whipped the ball high into the stands; it hit no one. Veronica Joyner, MC&S' founder and CAO, later claimed her school's players, coaches and fans had been subjected to racism by referees, and others, and that she would not penalize Gredic or coach Danny Jackson.

Devon Prep 57, Franklin 39: Devon won the middle two quarters, 37-16. Jeff Giddings (10) was the lone Electron to score in double figures.

At East Pennsboro

Straw. Mansion 68, Trinity 46: Jamal Jones (20) and Devonte' "DJ" Newbill (18) fueled the easy win.
At Carroll/Wood

West Catholic 49, Tri-Valley 32: This one featured all-time circumstances. The lights in Carroll's gym went out with 2:29 left in the third quarter, and with West ahead, 34-17. They never came back on and, finally, at 5:19, 1:50 after the blackout, a decision was made to finish the game at Wood, roughly 25 miles away. The resumption began at 7, with eight West supporters in the stands, and ended 20 minutes later. Total time consumed: 4 hours, 50 minutes. Aquil Younger sparked West with 17 points, including the first two at Wood on a layup. Vincent Ho scored 10 of his 13 points at Carroll.
Second Round
At Norristown

Straw. Mansion 61, St. Pius X (Pottstown) 54: While four teammates combined to go 1-for-8 at the line down the stretch, Devonte' "DJ" Newbill (15 points, three assists) went 6-for-6 on double bonuses to keep Mansion afloat. Soph Khyree Wooten had nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Quarterfinals
At Bethlehem Freedom
Straw. Mansion 59, Holy Cross 55: "DJ" Newbill hit four threeballs while posting 19 points. A 13-point halftime lead evaporated into a 51-51 tie before Saadiq Berry's layup and Khalil Meadows' two free throws provided some comfort.
At Harrisburg

Imhotep 42, Hughesville 37: David Appolon (15) and Earl Brown (11) scored in double digits, Brown (11) and Erik Copes (eight; also six blocks) led in rebounds and Tyhiem "Redz" Perrin made a clinching steal.
Semifinal
At Southern

Straw. Mansion 49, Imhotep 47: During the regular season, Mansion won these teams' battle, 88-82, in five OTs, then saw the Panthers regroup to win a second consecutive Pub title. With his future college coach, Marquette's Buzz Williams, watching, Devonte' "DJ" Newbill posted 12 points, four assists and five steals. However, with Mansion up, 48-47, Newbill missed both ends of a double bonus at 4.3. Teammate Eric Jefferson capped his birthday by slapping the rebound to Marque Griffin, who made the first of two free throws at 1.2. There'd be no miracle for 'Hotep, which received 16 points apiece from David Appolon and Ameen Tanksley.
Final
At Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center

South Fayette 49, Straw. Mansion 47: Doubled behind the arc on Mansion's final possession, Devonte' "DJ" Newbill made the smart play and passed to an open Khalil Meadows. His foul-line jumper did not succeed. Newbill had 15 points and six assists. Jamal Jones complemented 10 points with 19 rebounds.

Quarterfinal
At Widener University

Neumann-Goretti 53, Carroll 38: The Saints avenged their same-round, same-foe '09 defeat in comfortable fashion as Tyreek Duren supplied 10 points, four assists, three steals and his ever-flawless ballhandling. Tony Chennault mixed 20 points and five steals while Danny Stewart seized nine rebounds. Only Ben Mingledough (17 points, eight boards) was much of a factor for Carroll. The Saints led, 41-28, with 4:04 left. There was no late drama.
Semifinal
At Reading High's Geigle Complex

Neumann-Goretti 81, Eastern York 73: N-G was able to bump off previously perfect EY thanks largely to the defense of slender 6-foot guard Mustafaa Jones, who forced strong, 6-6 junior Andrew Nicholas (1,800-plus career points) to miss his first nine shots. Jones also hit a trey after EY hustled within 66-62 with 3:50 left. Danny Stewart (20) wolfed down five dunks and Tyreek Duren packed 16 of his 18 points into the second half. Geigle holds 3,200. N-G had maybe 35 supporters in the overflow crowd.
Final
At Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center

Neumann-Goretti 65, Chartiers Valley 63: CV's T.J. McConnell launched 32 shots en route to that many points, but he missed his last one, a right-wing trey at 0:03 with Lamin Fulton jumping toward him, and N-G had its three-pack of championships (Catholic League, City, State) while becoming only the fourth CL team in 61 years to finish with just one loss (30 wins); no squad went perfect during that time frame. Tony Chennault contributed 18 points, 12 rebounds and three assists while Danny Stewart made a visit to the same numbers neighborhood (17 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks). Mustafaa Jones (14) popped home four treys and dealt four assists. Stewart's follow with 2:31 left put N-G ahead for good, 59-57.
