South Preplayoffs
At O’Hara
West 75, Bonner 58
  Alfie Williams notched 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead West, which shot 31-for-54. Mike MacDonald (21) paced Bonner.
At O’Hara
West 77, Carroll 59
 
Harold Richardson shot 10-for-17 en route to 24 points and claimed 17 rebounds. Alfie Williams (20, 18) also made heavy contributions. The Burrs won the second half, 55-28. For Carroll, Kevin Dougherty and Paul Fox scored 16 points apiece and Fran Lynam added 15.

Dougherty 66, Judge 65 (ot)
 
Bill Magarity totaled 25 points and 17 rebounds and his brother, Mark, a sophomore, hit a free throw with 0:10 left to win it. The Cardinals (sub Ron Newman 14) had trailed by four with 1:12 left in the extra session. For Judge, Harry Edwards (13) and Dennis DeMayo (15 rebounds) led the starters while subs Joe Kerrigan and Tom McLaughlin scored 12 points apiece.

Soph Barry Brodzinski netted 15 points while Mike Borski mixed 13 points and 14 rebounds. Fran Rafferty (20) led Kenrick.

Bill Truskey combined 21 points with 13 rebounds, Tim Corlies totaled 14 points and 15 boards and Maurice ‘‘Mo’’ Howard scored nine of his 18 points in a 22-11 second quarter. Alfie Williams led West with 13 points, 16 boards.
O’Hara 55, Roman 47
 
Ed Manning shot 10-for-13 and 6-for-7 for 26 points and was hit on his foot by a flying whiskey bottle thrown from Roman’s stands. Mike Arizin added 15 points and Mike Sabol sank a 44-foot shot to end the first quarter. Jim ‘‘Chico’’ Singleton (11) led Roman.

SJ Prep 76, North 73
 
Maurice ‘‘Mo’’ Howard collected 27 points and seven assists while Tim Corlies (16, 16 rebounds) and Bill Truskey (15, 12) were tough inside. Barry Brodzinski (26) and Joe Wojtiw (20) paced North, which scored three late baskets to draw close.
O’Hara 47, Dougherty 44
 
The Lions swept to a 27-15 edge in the final 11 minutes as Mike Arizin (16, 11 rebounds) and Ed Manning (14) led the way with eight points apiece. Sub John DiMarco won a jump ball after almost getting a steal and passed to Jim McCaffrey for the winning layup. For Dougherty, Bill Magarity totaled 18 points and 19 rebounds (only five fewer than O’Hara’s team) and Pete Varanavage scored 16 points.

  Charlie ‘‘Brownie’’ Liddell scored 18 points, Joe ‘‘Bud’’ Elsesser added 17 points and Jim Edwards mixed 15 points with 16 rebounds. Ron Newman (16) led Dougherty.

Dennis Boylan scored 22 points, including 18 (14 in a row) in a 28-27 first half. Barry Brodzinski added 15 points. Joe ‘‘Bud’’ Elsesser and George McConnell split 26 points for Judge and Jim Edwards added 12.

Mike Cataline (18) and Joe Venuti (16) led in scoring and Rich McGuire mixed 10 points and 17 rebounds as the Raiders tasted success in their first playoff appearance. Steve Javie (14) led La Salle as Rick Hogan was held in check (nine) by Rich Fee.

Jim ‘‘Beef’’ Brophy shot 9-for-17 for 19 points and drained a left-corner jumper at 0:01 to win it. Ed ‘‘Shot’’ Stefanski’s steal set up the winning possession. Sub Mike Rush added eight points. Roman’s Jim ‘‘Chico’’ Singleton scored 20 points.

Doug Romanczuk generated 17 points and as many rebounds and Barry Brodzinski scored 17 points. The Falcons led, 60-53, before Ryan drew close behind Mike Cataline (15) and Larry Gruber (13).
ST More 62, Bonner 59 (2 ot)
 
The Golden Bears scored all 12 of their OT points from the line and Emery Sammons (18) hit a clinching one-and-one with 0:14 left. Ron Holmes scored 19 points. Ed ‘‘Shot’’ Stefanski scored 16 points for Bonner, which owned a 46-40 lead with 3:09 left in regulation.

  Mike Murphy scored 18 points and Terry Kehoe handled the inside work with 15 points, eight rebounds. McDevitt’s Don Acciavatti had 13 points and seven boards and sub Steve Olinik scored 11 points.

  Jim ‘‘Bozo’’ Wolkiewicz generated 20 points and 19 rebounds while Barry Brodzinski mixed 18 points and six assists. La Salle’s Dennis Purcell had 16 points, nine rebounds.

Dennis Hiller shot 6-for-10 and 8-for-8 for 20 points and Jim Edwards had the same number of points and rebounds (15). Mike Murphy and Tom Grady scored 14 points apiece for Kenrick, which surrendered the first 12 points of the third quarter.

The game was history after Bonner went scoreless for the first 5:00 and shot 1-for-11 in the first quarter. Donald Kelly shot 11-for-12 from the line en route to 21 points. Adrian Moody (13, seven rebounds) and Jim ‘‘Chico’’ Singleton (12, 11) helped. Steve Rush (14) led Bonner.
Neumann 54, West 50
 
Wendell ‘‘Chico’’ Ceasar (14 points) hit three consecutive bank shots in the fourth quarter as Neumann rang up an 18-11 advantage. Ed Molony (10, 11 rebounds) and Lloyd Ranson (12, nine) helped. For West, Ron Browner had 17 points and Tom Dougherty grabbed 11 rebounds.

Dennis Hiller posted 16 points and 13 rebounds for Judge, which stormed to a 26-10 bulge over the last 10:35. Jim Edwards (12, seven rebounds), Tony Ricci (11, nine) and Jim Brennan (11) lent assistance. For North, Jim ‘‘Bozo’’ Wolkiewicz posted 12 points and 17 rebounds and Barry Brodzinski scored 16 points.
Roman 48, Neumann 46
 
Adrian Moody turned a pass from Jim ‘‘Chico’’ Singleton into a decisive three-point play with 1:08 left. Rocco Piliero scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half. Neumann’s Lloyd Ranson had 16 points, 13 rebounds.

Dougherty 44, North 43
  Paul Terrell sniped 14-for-22 and 2-for-5 for 30 points, including 10 in the final period, as Dougherty stunned the 16-0 Falcons. The 30 points were a CL playoff record. The other Cardinals shot 5-for-27. North led, 43-40, but Terrell hit jumpers with 0:29 and 0:06 left and North’s Don Hobson (17) missed a last shot. Lawrence Reid had 10 rebounds. North’s Jim ‘‘Bozo’’ Wolkiewicz had 17 boards.
La Salle 69, Judge 60
 
Soph Matt Mihalich, who had never played more than 2 minutes in a varsity game, got a surprise start and shot 5-for-7 and 10-for-11 for 20 points. Ted Gutowicz posted 17 points, 13 rebounds. For Judge, Bob Gunn shot 7-for-8 for 14 points and Al Clancy had 16 boards.

Roman 53, ST More 38
 
John Griffin (14), Adrian Moody (13), Zane Major (12) and Donald Kelly (10) scored in almost perfect order while Moody (12) led in boards and Griffin dished six assists. For Tommy More, which shot 16-for-55, Enos Hill and Chub Edwards managed 10 points each. 
O’Hara 70, Neumann 46
 
Paul Oristaglio scored 18 of his 22 points in a 38-12 first half while Joe Dugan added 18 points, 14 rebounds. Joe Purcell had 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists. Jim Herbert (14) led Neumann.

  Matt Mihalich scored 17 of his 19 points in a 34-27 second half and his brother, Joe, a senior, had five assists. Ted Gutowicz (11, 14 rebounds) and Bob Carber (10, nine) handled the inside work. Dougherty soph Lawrence Reid had 14 points, 13 rebounds.
Roman 45, O'Hara 33
  Donald Kelly (15) and Adrian Moody led in scoring and John Griffin had eight points, 10 boards, four assists. Joe Purcell (22) led O'Hara, which committed 22 turnovers to Roman's seven.

1975

Judge 64, Dougherty 59
  Al Clancy posted 22 points and nine rebounds while Jim ‘‘Mo’’ Connolly (11 rebounds) and Tom Kneib had 16 points and four assists apiece. Lawrence Reid and Pat Wherrity scored 11 apiece for Dougherty.
La Salle 66, Wood 58
 
Five-seven Mike Canelli (seven assists) and 6-8 Bob Carber scored 18 points apiece while Joe Hand added 13 points and three assists. For Wood, making its first playoff appearance in its ninth CL season, Mike Dolge had 18 points and Bob Spadafora mixed 14 points, 13 rebounds, seven blocks.

The Cahillites survived despite shooting 4-for-26 in the first half. On his 18th birthday, Zane Major scored 16 points. Steve Compton also had 16 points.
Bonner 43, O’Hara 35
 
Terry Hannan scored 15 points while Bob Reinagel had 10 points and seven rebounds. O’Hara got 16 points and 13 boards from Mike Pearson, but shot 4-for-20 in the second half.
Semifinals
Judge 61, La Salle 56
 
Jim ‘‘Mo’’ Connolly shot 7-for-11 and 6-for-6 for 20 points and took nine rebounds. Al Clancy also scored 20 points and Bob Convey had 14 points, five assists. The Crusaders won the third quarter, 20-4. La Salle’s Bob Carber had 20 points, 10 rebounds.
Roman 61, Bonner 49
 
Six-six soph Joe Garrett had 13 points and 12 boards and opened the fourth quarter with a long jumper and a three-point play to provide a 44-38 lead. Zane Major scored 16 points. Bonner’s Terry Hannan scored 16 points.

  Kevin ‘‘Butch’’ Lynam (15) and Walter Jackson (10) provided help off the bench for Hugh McFadden (16). Soph Donny Dodds (14) led The Prep.

Lawrence Reid shot 11-for-15 en route to 27 points and dished six assists. Ed ‘‘Machine Gun’’ Callan added 16 points and six assists and Joe Macready grabbed 12 rebounds. No one scored in double figures for Judge.
Kenrick 52, La Salle 51
 
The Knights trailed by 11 points with 6:17 left and then erupted for 24 points as guards Tom Catagnus (16) and Robert ‘‘Butch’’ Bontempo (10) combined for 20. Paul Mulholland had 14 points, 12 rebounds. La Salle was led by Matt Mihalich (17), who missed a last shot.

Bill ‘‘Bam’’ McDevitt scored the only field goal of the second OT with 1:13 left and Mike Davis mixed 13 points and 14 rebounds. Michael Brooks, the leading scorer in CL history (27.3 average), was held to 10 points. Carroll’s Hugh McFadden had 23 points, 10 boards.

Steve Compton and soph Reggie Jackson scored 14 points apiece and Mike Morrow won it by hitting a 12-foot jumper from the right of the lane with 0:04 left. Paul Brightman (13), Bob Fleming (12) and John Smith (10) led Neumann.

The Knights shot 22-for-37 and 19-for-20 to pull the upset as Tom Catagnus (18), Robert ‘‘Butch’’ Bontempo (15), Phil Eisenmann (14) and Paul Mulholland (10) scored in double digits. Eisenmann held star Lawrence Reid to eight points.
West 46, Roman 43
 
Michael Brooks had 21 points and 10 rebounds and fellow frontcourter Ed Downs dished six assists. Reggie Jackson had 21 points and eight boards for Roman, which stalled for 2:19 in the second quarter and 3:25 in the third.

1977

Dougherty 76, La Salle 56
  Tim McTaggart hustled for 21 points and 20 rebounds while Ronald Guy was close with 22 points and 15 boards. For La Salle, Pat McLoone sniped 8-for-13 en route to 17 points while Bernie Fitzgerald totaled 14 points, nine rebounds.

Dougherty 49, North 47
 
Steve ‘‘Fearless Fly’’ Pearson shot 7-for-10 for 14 points and drained a running 20-footer with 0:01 left to win it. It was the third time in seven years that Dougherty entered the playoffs as the fourth-place team and knocked off the division champ. Kevin Van Osten had 12 points and six assists and Jim Dorsey grabbed 11 rebounds. North’s Joe Schoen had 18 points and 22 rebounds.

  Kevin McCormick scored 16 points while Tim Vanderslice and Pat Concannon canned layups after Roman drew within 35-33 with 2:58 left. Mark Dugan (13) paced Roman.

Kevin ‘‘Butch’’ Lynam shot 9-for-13 and 5-for-6 for 23 points while Mike Brophy shot 6-for-8 and 7-for-7 for 19 points. Edgar Carlis took eight rebounds. The Prep’s Chris Foy had 26 points, 11 boards.

Tom ‘‘Mo’’ Greenfield grabbed 12 rebounds and shot 11-for-12 from the line en route to 21 points. The Crusaders hit 10 consecutive shots from the floor spanning the third and fourth quarters. Ed Costello had 14 points. Dougherty’s Jim Dorsey had 16 points, eight rebounds.
Carroll 72, Bonner 49
 
Edgar Carlis shot 7-for-8 for 17 points and plucked 10 rebounds for Carroll, which scored the first 11 points of the second quarter. Greg Webster had 18 points, three assists. Frank Nunan (14) led Bonner.

John Staudenmayer shot 12-for-12 from the line en route to 20 points and added five assists. He converted a one-and-one to win it with 0:09 left. Bill Healy had 18 points, 10 boards. Jamie Davis had 24 points and 13 rebounds for West, which had a 14-point lead with 9:31 left.

Roman’s leaders were Reggie Jackson (18 ), Larry McGill (16, nine rebounds) and Lonnie McFarlan (16, six assists). The Prep’s Earle Smith had 19 points.

North 46, McDevitt 42
  Len Scheffold managed 22 points and four assists and Tom Bonk claimed 20 rebounds. George May (18) and Tony Sanders (15) led McDevitt.
La Salle 43, North 41
 
Pat Farris (17) and Dave Gray (12) led the way. Tom Bonk paced North with 22 points, 11 rebounds.

Lonnie McFarlan showed the way with 24 points and 16 rebounds while John ‘‘Yosh’’ Siorek (16) and Mike Lally (13) divided 16 assists. Neumann’s Marty Campbell had 32 points — a CL postseason mark — and 13 boards.
West 61, O’Hara 52
 
Jeff Hunter, who’d missed much of the season with a broken foot, came off the bench to contribute 22 points and nine rebounds. Sherman Kelly (13) and Paul Scott (five assists) helped. O’Hara’s Pete Callahan had 25 points, 13 rebounds.

Steve Senko shot 6-for-10 and 10-for-13 for 22 points as Ryan advanced to the final for the first time in its 12-season CL history. Senko added three assists, six steals and hit four free throws after Judge closed within 53-51 with 0:15 left. Ed Mostak had 14 points. Joe Petrone (19) led Judge.
Roman 44, West 39
 
Lonnie McFarlan posted 20 points and 13 rebounds for Roman, which regrouped after missing 20 of its first 23 shots. Ralph Mack grabbed 12 rebounds. Sub Jeff Hunter (14) led West.

1980
North Semifinals
Doubleheader at Lincoln
Judge 57, Ryan 54
  Sub John Luciano led Judge in points (15) and rebounds (six) and Mike O’Donnell added 11 points. Mike Leithead led Ryan in points (14) and boards (seven). Due to faulty synchronization, each ‘‘minute’’ on the scoreboard equaled 1:18.
Kenrick 64, La Salle 60
 
The Knights spurted to a 26-9 bulge and held on. Pat Hannan shot 8-for-10 for 20 points and received help from Jim Bolger (16, eight rebounds) and Tom Scott (14, nine). La Salle’s Mark Mischler had 18 points, eight rebounds.

Roman 77, Neumann 47
 
Steve Scheier dealt most of his nine assists to Lonnie McFarlan (17, 11 rebounds) and Randy Monroe (16).

  Dennis Arizin (15 points, nine rebounds) hit a clinching layup at 0:04 after West’s John Rousey was called for an offensive foul. West’s Jeff Jones had 12 points, eight rebounds.

Jim McLaughlin (13) and Jim Bolger (11) led in scoring, Pat Hannan made four steals and Tom Scott grabbed nine rebounds as the Knights snapped a 16-game losing streak against Judge (Art Comas 11).

Lonnie McFarlan shot 10-for-16 and 6-for-8 for 26 points and Gerald Roberts added 14 points, five assists. Dennis Arizin (16) and Bill Mitchell (14) paced O’Hara.

1981

St. James 35, Bonner 33
  Nate Hall, a 6-6 soph, took a lob pass from Paul Van Horn and banked in a layup with 0:03 left as the Bulldogs earned a trip to the playoffs for the first time since 1960. Jim Seaman scored 11 points while Van Horn and Tom Jones split eight assists. Bonner’s Rich Hopkins had 10 points and nine rebounds.

La Salle 41, Kenrick 39 (ot)
 
Chris O’Brien drained an 8-foot jumper at 0:03 and Kenrick’s Mike Lowry could only hit the rim on a 30-footer. Chip Greenberg had 10 points, five assists. Kenrick’s Jim McLaughlin had 10 points.
Judge 64, Wood 47
 
Mark Singer (12 rebounds) and John Luciano scored 17 points apiece. Jack Walsh (24) led Wood.

In the greatest upset record-wise in CL playoff history, the 7-7 Bulldogs, who needed to win a preplayoff just to join the party, stunned 14-0 Roman as Nate Hall collected 15 points and 10 rebounds, John McHugh added 10 points and eight boards and Paul Van Horn, accustomed to shooting less than 50 percent, went 6-for-8 at the line and dished five assists. St. James had lost 29 in a row to Roman. Tom Jones blocked Roman’s last shot in regulation. Hall’s one-and-one conversion with 0:10 left in OT provided a 58-54 lead. Roman’s Glenn Welton scored 20 points.
West 65, SJ Prep 45
 
John Rousey was special with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Anthony Murphy had 10 points, seven boards. Keith Coleman (15) led The Prep.

Chip Greenberg mixed 18 points, six rebounds and three assists and sub Dave Powell had nine points, five boards. Mark Singer (16) paced Judge.
West 41, St. James 39
 
Anthony Murphy scored just six points, but added 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Curtis Emery had 10 points, nine rebounds. St. James missed two shots on its final possession while trying to tie and shot 1-for-6 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Judge 54, North 50
  Bernie DiBello shot 8-for-8 from the line while scoring 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter; he capped the marksmanship with a clinching one-and-one at 0:02. Tom ‘‘Doc’’ Conroy had 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists. For North, Joe Gadzinski totaled 18 points and 13 rebounds and Tim O’Shea dealt 11 assists.
Kenrick 42, La Salle 37
 
The Knights, who entered the season with no returning varsity players, pulled off the first-round upset as soph Brian Leahy collected 16 points and 10 rebounds. La Salle franchise Chip Greenberg had six rebounds and eight steals, but shot just 2-for-14 from the floor for nine points.

Roman 77, West 75 (2 ot)
 
Six-seven junior Dallas Comegys packed 18 of his 27 points and eight of his 16 rebounds into the final 14 minutes. In the last 8:56, the teams combined to go 25-for-28 at the line. Anthony Abron (16, 13 boards), Rob Lawton (15) and Demetrius Styles (10 assists) were strong throughout and sub Rob Williams made three steals in a 26-16 fourth quarter. Mark Kelly (19), John Simko, Mark ‘‘Marques’’ Johnson (16 each) and Marc Wade (15) led West, which forced the first OT on Arthur Trippett’s off-balance 17-footer.
Bonner 56, St. James 49
 
Joe Kilroy generated 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists and John Keichline had 12 points, seven boards. John McHugh (18) and Tom Jones (16) led St. James.

Keith Ditsche bagged 13 points and seven boards in the slow-moving game and Tom ‘‘Doc’’ Conroy converted a clinching one-and-one with 0:04 left. Brian Leahy (14) led Kenrick despite having to sit out 10 minutes before intermission with dizziness.
Roman 37, Bonner 35
Alex Staranowicz nailed a 17-foot jumper from the right of the foul line with 0:11 left and Bonner missed a last shot. Dallas Comegys had 11 points, 15 rebounds. Bonner’s Rodney Blake notched eight rebounds, but scored just two points.

Kenrick 53, La Salle 44
  Brian Leahy shot 6-for-9 and 6-for-8 for 18 points and added 11 rebounds and three assists. Dave Duda (18) and Lee Abernathy (six assists) helped. Sophs Craig Conlin (20) and Tom Gizzi (15) helped La Salle to a 40-26 rebounding edge.
Judge 59, McDevitt 40
 
Tom Jusczak (12) led in scoring and Don Rauchut had eight rebounds. Tom Shea (11) paced McDevitt.

Dallas Comegys delivered 19 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Rob Williams added 10 points, seven boards. Jimmy Pee had 16 points for St. James, which collapsed after building a 19-11 lead.

Tom Clark and Tom Gormley scored 18 points apiece and Jack Concannon had 12 points, 10 rebounds. Mark ‘‘Marques’’ Johnson (19) led West.

Sub Rich McCloskey scored nine points and claimed 14 rebounds. John Boyle (11, 10) and Don Rauchut (eight, 12) also made solid contributions in both categories. Kenrick’s Brian Leahy had 19 points, 14 rebounds.

Tom Gormley notched 15 points and eight rebounds and hit a clinching free throw with 0:04 left. Jack Concannon (12, 10) and Rodney Blake (eight, 12) helped. Roman’s Dallas Comegys was huge with 21 points, 21 rebounds, five blocks.

  Craig Conlin (18 points) and Tom Gizzi (16, 10 rebounds) handled the inside while Larry Guess dished seven assists and shot 10-for-13 at the line. Judge’s Rob Mulville had 17 points, 10 rebounds.
Ryan 42, Kenrick 41
 
Kevin Farnan (14 points) won it by hitting a foul line jumper with 0:07 left. Fran Ciliberti added 17 points, eight rebounds. Kenrick’s Brian Leahy had 14 points, 10 boards.

O’Hara 47, Neumann 43
 
Mike Louden had 13 points and three assists and committed just one turnover to help the Lions overcome a 37-17 rebounding disadvantage. Neumann’s Steve Benton totaled 19 points and 12 boards before fouling out with 1:46 left.
Bonner 75, West 44
 
Rodney Blake shot 11-for-14 and 8-for-10 and 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Dave Koskinen added 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists. West’s John Rankin had 14 points, 10 boards.

Barry Bekkedam shot 6-for-9 and 7-for-8 for 19 points, adding 11 rebounds and six blocks. Matt Ward (11, 10 rebounds) and Mike Iorio (nine, 10) helped. Bonner’s Ed McCrystal had 18 points.

  Craig Conlin collected 23 points and 12 rebounds and soph Dan Durkin had nine points, five rebounds, three assists. For Wood, Tom Martin scored 15 points and Jim Feeney grabbed 17 rebounds.

Mike Cummiskey scored 18 points and Paul Winters (12, 10 rebounds) converted a nifty pass by Mike ‘‘Zack’’ Zacierka for a layup to provide comfort at 41-36. Scott Crouch (12) led Kenrick.

Frank Giunta (23) made a midcourt steal and then hit a one-and-one with 0:12 left to give Neumann a 53-50 pad and its first playoff win since 1973. Rocco Sansone grabbed 13 rebounds. Chris Arizin (20, 16 rebounds) and Mike Connor (18, 12) led O’Hara.
Carroll 60, Roman 56
 
Sub Jim Trainer compressed 10 points and three assists into 16 minutes and canned a layup with 0:38 left for 57-52 lead. Barry Bekkedam had 12 points, 15 boards. Melvin ‘‘Sauce’’ Hawkins (13) led Roman.

Craig Conlin (16, eight rebounds), Tom Gizzi (16, seven) and Greg Wilhelm (10, 10) were the stars for La Salle, which shot 23-for-25 from the line. Judge’s Rob Mulville scored 16 points.
Neumann 54, Carroll 52 (ot)
 
Steve Benton forced OT with an open court steal and layup and hit a 10-footer with 0:18 left to win it. He had 21 points, six rebounds, three assists. John Gilroy had 17 points, 10 rebounds. Carroll’s Barry Bekkedam totaled 15 points, nine boards, eight blocks.

  Nick Horne shot 10-for-16 for 24 points and took eight rebounds, John Przybylinski mixed 12 points and nine assists and sixth man Mark ‘‘Skit’’ Scardigli had 10 points, seven boards. Larry Lowry (13) led Judge.
North 50, La Salle 38
 
The Falcons put no one in double figures, but four players scored at least eight points. Jim Giedemann and Kevin Comey had five assists each and Mark Morrow grabbed seven rebounds. Mike Matthews (13) led La Salle.

Kevin Cofield scored 16 points and Mike Jackson had 13 points and nine rebounds. Nick Goodwin (16), Damu Forman and Pat Mooney (14 apiece) paced The Prep.
O’Hara 54, Carroll 49
 
Bill Kirschner shot 7-for-10 and 6-for-7 for 20 points and seventh man Mike O’Hara packed nine points and two assists into eight minutes. John O’Hare had 13 points, nine boards. Carroll’s John Henning had 16 points, eight boards. South MVP Barry Bekkedam, who’d finished the regular season with school-record outbursts of 37, 38 and 41 points, missed the game with illness.

Tucked into a corner no more than 3 inches from the sideline and baseline, John Przybylinski (12 points) stuck a jumper with 0:09 left to win it. Bob Coppolino (12) had the last of his six assists. Przybylinski was the defender as North MVP Jim Giedemann missed a last shot for the Falcons.
Roman 42, O’Hara 40 (ot)
 
Melvin ‘‘Sauce’’ Hawkins collected 12 points and six assists and nailed a 22-footer after taking an inbound pass from Ernest Pollard with 0:01 left. Mike Jackson grabbed 11 rebounds. For O’Hara, Jay Armitage scored 12 points and Jim Lynam Jr. watched in agony as a last-second shot to end regulation went in, and then more in, and then spilled out.

North 49, Ryan 44
  Jim Schultice (16) and Eric Banks (10) led in scoring and Tim Comey had four assists. The Falcons scored the last six points on two free throws apiece by Kevin Comey, brother Tim and Banks. Pat Kilgarriff (13) and John Smedley (10, 11 boards) led Ryan.
Kenrick 64, Dougherty 51
 
Eddie Scott shot 9-for-11 and 5-for-6 for 23 points and dished five assists as the Knights pulled the upset. Eddie Hull added 12 points and three assists. Dougherty’s Rodger Tabb had 18 points, seven rebounds.

John Henning collected 16 points and 12 rebounds while Tom Dunn and Mike Kempski scored 19 points apiece. Monroe Blakes (18) and Brian Duffy (14, 12 rebounds) led West and Nelson Davis was the first CL player to hit a playoff three-pointer.
Roman 53, Bonner 45
 
Chuck Veterano had 20 points and 15 boards for Roman, which broke away from a 37-37 tie with seven points in 52 seconds. Clayton ‘‘Stink’’ Adams (14, three assists) had the first five points in the burst. Bonner’s Brian Daly had 15 points, eight rebounds.

Tim Comey converted a one-and-one with 0:06 left to win it while Kevin Comey and Dave Mastropietro scored 13 points apiece and Jim Schultice plucked 12 rebounds. Kenrick’s Eddie Scott shot 10-for-15 and 6-for-6 for 26 points and had 10 rebounds.

Soph Alan Watkins bulled for 24 points and eight rebounds, Clayton ‘‘Stink’’ Adams had 16 points, six assists and four steals and sub Maynard Merriman had 10 points, 10 boards. Tom Dunn (24) and Mike Kempski (19) paced Carroll.

  Marc Alicea hit three threes en route to 15 points and Jim Schultice snatched 15 rebounds for North, which roared back from a 22-8 deficit. Dave Heineman added seven assists. La Salle’s Mark Fitzgerald had 14 points, 10 boards.
Judge 52, McDevitt 51
 
Chris Fagan (24) hit a three to tie the score with 0:45 left and converted a one-and-one with 0:05 to win it. Ed Murphy added 13 points, seven rebounds. McDevitt’s John O’Connell had 18 points, seven boards.

At Textile, ninth man Ruben Colon packed eight points, nine rebounds and seven blocks into 16 minutes and Alan Watkins had 23 points and 18 rebounds. Monroe Blakes (27) led West.

Brian Daly (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Dan Summers (14, 12) handled the dirty work and sub Fran George shot 5-for-6 and 6-for-7 for 16 points in 15 minutes. John Preston (17) led Neumann.

  Matt Brown shot 6-for-10 and 9-for-11 for 21 points and dished four assists. Joe Bergstrom grabbed 11 rebounds. Five Neumann players scored 10 or 11 points and Aaron Abbott had seven assists.
At O’Hara
Carroll 62, SJ Prep 40
  Jim Halpin (16) and Derrick Simms (14) led in scoring and Marc Cobia dished seven assists. Frank Sciolla (18) topped The Prep.
North Semifinals
McDevitt 75, Dougherty 63
  Aaron Ervin collected 13 points, five assists and five steals and committed no turnovers as the visiting Lancers won a playoff for the first time in 26 CL seasons. Matt Buber (19), Derick Pickett (16, 12 boards), sub Allen Ray (13) and Darren Gregg (12) also scored in double figures. McDevitt shot 19-for-20 at the line in the last quarter. Dougherty’s Chris Williams had 23 points.
La Salle 67, Judge 58
 
Chris Lazorcheck scored 21 points and sub Jack Stanczak battled for 16 points, nine boards. Bill Gillen and Glenn Senior (four threes) scored 19 apiece for Judge.

Damon Reid mixed 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists while Eddie Campbell had eight points, 10 boards and five steals. Aaron Abbott hit two free throws with 5:01 left to put the Pirates ahead for good, 42-40. Steve Dougherty (12) and Jeff Macalis (12) led O’Hara.

Mike McKee sprinkled 14 assists — setting CL and city-leagues playoff records — while Bernard Jones scored 22 points and Mike Watson had 12 points, 11 rebounds. In three games versus Neumann, Jones shot 27-for-45 en route to 76 points. Neumann sub Troy Aursby scored 18 points.
