The Burrs continued their hot streak by getting 11 points from Ed
OHolloran and nine each from Ed Mullelly and Jack McEnroe. Tom Quinn topped South
with 14 points.

Continuing an amazing rally from an 0-6 league start, the Cahillites cruised
after winning the first quarter, 13-6. Jack Maloney scored 14 points. Tom Quinn (11) led
South.

Roman 33, SJ Prep 31
Joe Rogers scored nine points and hit a free throw and basket to provide a
33-29 lead with 2:00 left. Jack Maloney had 10 points. Bob Walters (12) paced The Prep,
which last led at 20-19.
West 36, ST More 21
Jack McEnroe (12), Tony Skivo (nine) and Bill Thomas (eight) were best for
West. John Byrne scored 12 points for More.

Launching long set shots over a 2-1-2 zone, Franny
Dutch Henkel erupted for 27 points, a CL postseason record, as the
Pirates frolicked. Andy Quinn (nine) led Roman.
West 35, La Salle 33 (ot)
Bill Thomas canned a looping overhead shot to win it after John Weglicki scored
for La Salle with 0:30 left in regulation to force OT. Bill Young (14) led West.
1945

South 34, North 28
Six-seven star Larry Foust fouled out with 9:30 left, but Joe Hannan and sub
Joe Keenan played well to assure the 25-13 lead would not melt away. No one on either team
scored in double figures.
West 45, Roman 31
Bill Young scored 19 points while Francis Reds Bagnell
and Ed Kane added 10 apiece. John Bates had 15 points for Roman.

Jack Kane (14) and Jim Phelan (10) scored in double figures and Charles
Buddy Donnelly shot 4-for-5 in a 15-9 third quarter. Bob Berry
(13) led Roman.

Jim Reds Furey, a 5-7 whirlwind, scored 16 of
Souths first 20 points and finished with 18. Six-seven Larry Foust added 16. No one
reached double digits for the Jimmies.

Tom Rittenhouse (13) and John Gillespie (10) led the Hawklets in scoring. Frank
Hinnegan and Charles Hoyt scored 10 each for North.

Jim Phelan (12) did much of the scoring in bursts at the beginning and end.
Charles Buddy Donnelly added 10 points. Dick Dougherty (12) topped
West.

Jim Covello paced the Explorers with 10 points and made a layup to put them
ahead for good, 39-38. John Grauer and Charles Buddy Donnelly
added nine points apiece. Donnellys father, Michael, had died of a heart attack in
mid-January while watching a tripleheader at the Palestra involving La Salle. Tom Stoeckle
and Charles Ollie Hoyt had 10 each for North.
West 46, Roman 39 (2 ot)
Ernie Beck scored 17 points and made a tap-in as West established control early
in the second OT. Sam Glassmire added 13 points and hit a basket to end the first OT. For
Roman, John Wojdula (14) and Bill Magarity (10) led in scoring, but Fran McMenamin scored
at the end of regulation and again to open the first OT.
1949
South Preplayoff
At SJ Prep
South 41, St. James 39
John Lavin canned a hook shot with 0:04 left to lift South, which used 24
points by Tony Del Conte to rally from a 22-10 deficit. Tony Carney scored 17 points for
the losers.

West 41, La Salle 33
Ernie Beck scored 15 points to lead the Burrs. Ed Garrity, a transfer from SJ
Prep whod become eligible at midseason, saved all eight of his points for the last
quarter and did well on defense against Tom Checchia (four). Soph Tom Gola (14) led La
Salle.
South 48, SJ Prep 43
Tony Del Conte (13) and John Lavin (10) sparked South, which led by at least
three points through the fourth quarter. John Doogan (21) led The Prep.

Tom Gola collected 14 of his 22 points in a 22-14 first half and Fran
Wacky OHara (13) shot 5-for-5 at the line to raise his
seasons markmanship to 60-for-67. Connie Miller was out because of illness. Ned
Hogan (14) paced West.
South 48, North 42
Dennis Collins scored 17 points and nailed a pair of one-handers as South left
behind a 41-41 tie. Wearing a patch over his left eye in the aftermath of an injury
several weeks earlier, John Lavin was used sporadically. John Rauchut (14) and Charles
Kullman (12) led North.
1951

As coach Joseph Tubby Walker again assumed command
after suffering a midseason medical setback, John Misty Fannon
scored 16 points and drained a hook shot to put More ahead for good, 44-43. The Rev.
Joseph Hilferty had coached the Golden Bears in the interim. Al Juliana added 11 points.
La Salles Tom Gola, whod averaged 25.7 points in league player, was held to
14.
West 41, South 40
Jim Warrington (11 points) hit a decisive jumper with 0:41 left and Jack Devine
scored 13 points. John Lavin (19) was the only South player in double figures.

Ed Williams (19), Joe Sturgis (18), Charles Singley (17) and Walt Maxwell (15)
led the assault as the Burrs set a CL postseason record for points. Bill Lynch (26) led

John Misty Fannon packed 16 of his 19 points into a
29-19 first half. Joe Pastore added 12 points.

Bill Lindsay scored 19 points to pace the rout. Bob Devine added 10 points.

Tom Derago (16), Mike Schlacter (15) and Sid Kraemer (14) paced La Salle. Jim
Tanney topped North with 12 points.

The Pirates roared back from a 13-point, early-fourth-quarter deficit as Bob
Goodrich (17) led the way. Goodrich scored the final six points of regulation in 35
seconds on a jumper, two free throws and a layup off Rich DeFuscos assist. Fred
Giordanos tap-in provided the lead for good, 59-57. Gerry McColgan (17) and Tony
Garberina (16) paced North.
West 75, La Salle 47
The teams combined to shoot 99 free throws as West went 37-for-50 and La Salle
went 25-for-49. Bob Devine scored 19 points. Bill Bodo (10) led La Salle.
1955

John Rowan scored five of his 14 points in a 12-0 run that enabled West to win
the fourth quarter, 24-10. Pat Carey, whod posted a 47-point game during the regular
season, managed 17 points. George Buddy Kline (21) paced North.
La Salle 54, ST More 46
Joe Heyer (18) and Gerry Bohlinger (14) led La Salle, which scored 10
consecutive points to start the third quarter. Dan Devine (15) and Jim Jenkins (12) paced
More.

Jim Kenny scored 12 of his 23 points in a 20-11 third quarter. Bobby McNeill
added 20 points. It was the first time in CL playoff history that teammates reached 20
points. Wests 6-7 John Driscoll scored 25 points, but was held to six in the second
half by North sub Larry Sarafinas.
La Salle 67, St. James 49
Joe Heyer, whod broken the CL one-game record with 49 points during the
regular season, hit for 18 points. Hugh Brolly (13) and John Simpson (10) also reached
double figures and Charles Little Obie OBrien, son of coach
Charles Obie OBrien, did the ballhandling. Ray Linden (21)
led St. James.
1957

At St. Josephs College
Neumann 57, Bonner 37
Sam Kavalauskas (14), Jim Gannon (12) and Andy Terifay (10) scored in double
figures for Neumann, which rolled to bulges of 14-3 after one quarter and 33-14 at
halftime.

Joe Zeke Zawacki scored all 15 of his points in the
second half as the Falcons twice built leads of 15 points. Larry Sarafinas added 14
points. Ray Brown (20) and Bob Dickey (12) paced West, which was alive until committing a
turnover with 0:22 left.
La Salle 48, Neumann 40
Rich Amejka and Jerry Cosgrove split 28 points for La Salle, which coasted to a
34-20 lead after three quarters. Andy Terifay (16) led Neumann.

After freezing the ball for the last 2:00, North prevailed when Ed Rotz (12

Bill Penny scored 21 points and made three huge baskets one to end

Five-nine Jim Gannon and 5-6 Bill Mulvihill scored 15 points apiece and Neumann
shot 19-for-24 at the line. Ron Ebert (17) and Bob Liddy (14) topped North.

Jack Shepper managed to score 27 points tying a CL postseason record
despite shooting 1-for-6 at the line. Dan Wierzbowski (17) and Vince Berry (14)

Tom Galia scored eight of his 24 points in a 12-8 first quarter. Billy Hoy (17)
and Mike Steele (16) paced More.

John Andreoli (19), Joe Kelly (17) and John Monahan (14) scored in double
figures and Kelly hit a field goal to provide a 61-56 lead. Tom Galia (23) and Don DiJulia

Jim Lynam scored the first six points of the game and finished with 17. Jim
Flavin added 13 points. Vince Berry (17) led Dougherty.

Frank Corace scored 18 points for the Friars, who piled up a 42-29 lead after
three quarters. Bob DeFino (14) and Paul Gallagher (12) helped. Bob Harrington and Cy
Cosgrove scored 12 apiece for Dougherty.
St. James 56, Judge 47
Don DiJulia scored 19 points while Steve Courtin (10-for-11) and Andy Pinter
(9-for-11) used strong foul-shooting to add 16 and 15 points, respectively. The Bulldogs,
who went ahead for good, 44-42, on Courtins basket, shot 26-for-29 at the line
overall and 17-for-18 in the final quarter. SJ played without rebounder Bill Donahue,
injured in a sledding accident. George Sutor (19) and John Monahan (17) paced Judge.

Vince Richardson scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Ed
Hockenburys drive began an 11-0 run that produced a 50-39 pad. John McKendry added

Bob Zell scored 17 points and John Garrett managed 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Judges George Sutor totaled 18 points and 19 rebounds.

Fran Chick Wierzbowski, a sub until late in the regular
season, shot 10-for-12 for 22 points and launched a buzzer-beating shot that rattled in
for the game-winner. George Paull added 10 points. John Floyd scored 16 points for More.

The Cardinals ran their record to 23-0 while dominating the rebound battle,
51-29, and receiving 24 points from Mike Kempski. Six-nine Maurice Savage and Gerry
McKendry added 15 points apiece. Frank Guerin (20), Joe Lindsay (14), Norm Kropp and Frank
Connell (13 each) led Bonner.
Egan 59, Neumann 47
Egan, a first-year CL member, registered the upset despite having no starter
taller than 6-1. Chris Cosmas and Dave Frederick split 40 points and Bill Creeden claimed
18 rebounds. The Eagles rang up a 59-39 lead before Neumann scored the final eight points
against reserves. Frank Gillen and Jim Stinger split 22 points.
1965
First Round

In a late, 14-point burst that won the game, Kevin Flynn scored seven of his 14
points and Joe Hartman added five of his 16. Sub Bill Jillard (10) also scored in double
figures. North star Stan Witalec scored 14 points before leaving with an ankle injury
early in the fourth quarter.
Bonner 68, Judge 61
All five Bonner starters reached double figures Paul Waclawsky (19),
Bill Skip McCauley (18), Mike Hauer (11), Ron Branch and Fran
Rizzo (10 apiece). Tom Lynch (17) topped Judge.

Mike Barrett and Joe Russell scored 18 points apiece and sub Tom DeMuzio made a
clinching three-point play with 0:39 left. Mores John Pierantozzi scored 15 points.

Mike Hauer contributed 23 points and 17 rebounds and Ron Branch and Paul

Bob Atene scored 21 points and Joe Black added 12. Ron Billingslea had 13 for
West.
First Round
North 71, Neumann 69 (2 ot)
Ron Kurtz (25 points) and Hank Siemiontkowski (17) enabled the Falcons to
survive the grueling game. For Neumann, Bob Atene hit 14 field goals for 28 points
a CL postseason record and scored 12 to help erase a 10-point deficit in the final
6:00 of regulation.
Dougherty 66, OHara 49
Jack Kerrigan (19) and Bob Walsh (18) paced Dougherty, which won the second
half, 41-20. Joe Hazinsky (19) led OHara.

Ron Kurtz scored 21 points and Dennis Bohn (17) converted a steal and race
downcourt into the go-ahead basket as the clock melted below 0:20. Len Caprisecca (22) and
Sam Cancelliere (16) paced Judge.

Nick Scogna (24) and Ed Phillips (13) led the way. Only Jack Snyder (16)
reached double figures for Dougherty.

Quarterfinals

North 77, McDevitt 60
In a game that generated headlines across the country, Norths junior
varsity filling in for the 12-man varsity squad, suspended by coach Jack Friel
(also the disciplinarian) for cutting classes rolled to a stirring victory. The
youngsters, booed by Norths fans during warmups and hit with chants of
We want the varsity! had not played for eight days and only split
with McDevitts JVs during the regular season. The starters were Mike Kaiser (20
points), Iggy Brodzinski (19), Jim Boylan (14), Joe Evanosich (13) and Billy Dever (nine).
Kaiser, Boylan and Brodzinski claimed 20, 17 and 15 rebounds, respectively. McDevitt was
led by junior guard Bob Haas (26), who during the regular season had scored 51 points
against Ryan to break the CL record.
Judge 50, La Salle 46
Mike Krawczyk scored 24 points and Tim Fehrle (13) converted a layup with 1:02
left to break a 46-46 tie as Judge survived a scare against a team it had swamped twice
during the regular season. Judge trailed, 41-24, before rallying. Bill Walters (19) led La
Salle.
OHara 57, Roman 55 (3 ot)
Sub Steve Maiocco, scoreless beforehand, nailed a 20-foot jumper at the buzzer
to dampen Romans first playoff appearance since a prearranged preplayoff in 1959
(and before that in 49). Joe Hazinsky (17) and Tom Ingelsby (11) led in scoring for
OHara, which had possession for more than 12 of the final 13 minutes. John Proud
(15) and Keith Coady (13) led Roman.
West 51, ST More 49 (ot)
Ron Billingslea scored 21 points and tipped in a missed free throw with 0:35
left to make the difference. Bob Dennis (12) and Herm Lockley (11) helped. For More, Mike
Jones scored 23 points and Humphrey Conix hit a jumper to force OT.

OHara 51, North 49
Lou Ferro scored on a buzzer-beating tap as OHara won a thriller. The
ball rolled around the rim twice, momentarily hung on the metal slab extending from the
rim to the backboard and then fell in. The Lions had created a tie with 0:17 left on Steve
Maioccos steal and layup, followed by Ray Martins steal. Joe Hazinsky scored
17 points. Norths Hank Siemiontkowski scored 26 points, including 13 in a row in the
fourth quarter. Coach Jack Friel used two of his JV heroes from the quarterfinals
forward Mike Kaiser and guard Billy Dever.
Judge 64, West 52
Rick Maerten (17) led four double-figure scorers for the Crusaders, who steamed
to a 46-27 lead after three quarters. Bob Dennis (21) and Herm Lockley (15) paced West.
1969

Dougherty 57, McDevitt 43
One month after suffering a 75-stitch cut in his right hand, incurred when he
collided with a pane of glass in a door in Doughertys gym, Bill
Bear Banks returned to action with a 16-point effort. Kevin Kane
added 13 points. McDevitts Bob Haas scored 19 points, but was held without a field
goal in the second half.
North 55, Judge 51
Bill OHara scored 14 points, Iggy Brodzinski and Pat McMullen added 12
apiece and Mark Williams had 10 before fouling out with 5:10 left. Thereafter, Vince
Morrison scored 13 of his 16 points to draw Judge close.
Bonner 52, OHara 48
Bob Sabol (15) and Ed Hastings (13) led in scoring and Joe Bonner drove for the
clinching basket with just under a half-minute left. Frank Doyle (21) and Tom Ingelsby
(12) led OHara.
Roman 58, SJ Prep 53
Mike Moody collected 20 points and 15 rebounds and got scoring assistance from
Larry Storm (14) and Mike Bantom (13). Rich Hinckley (19) and Jack Krutsick (15) paced The
Prep.

The Cahillites left behind a 30-30 tie by scoring 17 consecutive points in the
last 4:37 of the third quarter. Mike Bantom scored 17 points while Larry Storm and Mike
Moody added 16 apiece. Steve Conway (14) and Bill Bear Banks (10)
led Dougherty.
North 73, Bonner 65 (ot)
Mark Williams totaled 17 points and 13 rebounds and hit the second of two free
throws with 0:03 left in regulation and Pat McMullen (14) hit six consecutive free throws
as OT wound down. Bob Sabol scored 24 points for Bonner, which was whistled for 25 fouls.

Dougherty 58, Judge 46
Six-seven Joe Newman, used as the sixth man in his first season of organized
ball, scored 17 points and recorded six blocks. Bill Magarity and Kevin Kane scored 12
points each and Paul Tucker hit a 10-foot jumper to provide the lead for good, 34-32.
Dennis Maguire (12) and Harry Edwards (11) led Judge.
North 74, Kenrick 54
Jim Boylan (20, 20 rebounds), Gene Kweeder (13), Joe Rymal (11) and Billy Dever
(10) led the way as North ruined Kenricks first playoff appearance. Jim Casciano
(17) paced the losers, who shot 0-for-15 in the third quarter.
South Semifinals

Neumann 46, OHara 34
David Jones collected 16 points and 12 rebounds and scored all five of
Neumanns second-half baskets. Vince DeLuca limited OHara shooter Frank Doyle
to six points.
Bonner 71, SJ Prep 66
Bonner stormed to a 33-17 lead in the first 13 minutes, but found itself
trailing by seven points late in the third quarter. Jack McCormick (18) and Jim Haggarty
(17) paced the Friars while The Preps John Jablonski poured in 27 points.

Bill Magarity shot 7-for-8 and 7-for-10 for 21 points and plucked 12 rebounds
while Joe Newman (16) and Kevin Kane (15) helped. For Neumann, David Jones had 15 points
and Gene Prybella managed 12 before being ejected for throwing a punch.
North 64, Bonner 50
As theyd done in 1968, the Falcons again turned a bizarre situation into
victory. At the scheduled 2 p.m. start, coach Fran Dougherty, thinking his team was slated
for the second game, was walking into the building and no Falcons were warming up.
Officials gave North 15 minutes to put a team on the floor. When Dougherty reached the
locker room, he found six players (four starters). The fifth starter, 6-5 Jim Boylan,
rushed to the bench during the National Anthem and asked guard Billy Dever,
Which basket is ours? Gene Kweeder and Joe Rymal scored 18 points
apiece. Dever (13) and Boylan (nine) helped. Bonners Joe DiCocco scored 19 points.
Two main men missed the game Norths Joe Rapczynski (broken ankle) and
Bonners John Cappelletti (sprained ankle).
