Donnelly’s father, Michael, had died of a heart attack in mid-January while watching a tripleheader at the Palestra involving La Salle. Tom Stoeckle and Charles ‘‘Ollie’’ Hoyt had 10 each for North.
West 46, Roman 39 (2 ot)
  Ernie Beck scored 17 points and made a tap-in as West established control early in the second OT. Sam Glassmire added 13 points and hit a basket to end the first OT. For Roman, John Wojdula (14) and Bill Magarity (10) led in scoring, but Fran McMenamin scored at the end of regulation and again to open the first OT.

  Tony Del Conte (13) and John Lavin (10) sparked South, which led by at least three points through the fourth quarter. John Doogan (21) led The Prep.

  Dennis Collins scored 17 points and nailed a pair of one-handers as South left behind a 41-41 tie. Wearing a patch over his left eye in the aftermath of an injury several weeks earlier, John Lavin was used sporadically. John Rauchut (14) and Charles Kullman (12) led North.

  As coach Joseph ‘‘Tubby’’ Walker again assumed command after suffering a midseason medical setback, John ‘‘Misty’’ Fannon scored 16 points and drained a hook shot to put More ahead for good, 44-43. The Rev. Joseph Hilferty had coached the Golden Bears in the interim. Al Juliana added 11 points. La Salle’s Tom Gola, who’d averaged 25.7 points in league player, was held to 14.
West 41, South 40
  Jim Warrington (11 points) hit a decisive jumper with 0:41 left and Jack Devine scored 13 points. John Lavin (19) was the only South player in double figures.

Gerry McColgan (17) and Tony Garberina (16) paced North.

  The teams combined to shoot 99 free throws as West went 37-for-50 and La Salle went 25-for-49. Bob Devine scored 19 points. Bill Bodo (10) led La Salle.

  Jim Kenny scored 12 of his 23 points in a 20-11 third quarter. Bobby McNeill added 20 points. It was the first time in CL playoff history that teammates reached 20 points. West’s 6-7 John Driscoll scored 25 points, but was held to six in the second half by North sub Larry Sarafinas.

  Joe Heyer, who’d broken the CL one-game record with 49 points during the regular season, hit for 18 points. Hugh Brolly (13) and John Simpson (10) also reached double figures and Charles ‘‘Little Obie’’ O’Brien, son of coach Charles ‘‘Obie’’ O’Brien, did the ballhandling. Ray Linden (21) led St. James.

  Don DiJulia scored 19 points while Steve Courtin (10-for-11) and Andy Pinter (9-for-11) used strong foul-shooting to add 16 and 15 points, respectively. The Bulldogs, who went ahead for good, 44-42, on Courtin’s basket, shot 26-for-29 at the line overall and 17-for-18 in the final quarter. SJ played without rebounder Bill Donahue, injured in a sledding accident. George Sutor (19) and John Monahan (17) paced Judge.

Egan 59, Neumann 47
  Egan, a first-year CL member, registered the upset despite having no starter taller than 6-1. Chris Cosmas and Dave Frederick split 40 points and Bill Creeden claimed 18 rebounds. The Eagles rang up a 59-39 lead before Neumann scored the final eight points against reserves. Frank Gillen and Jim Stinger split 22 points.

  Ron Kurtz (25 points) and Hank Siemiontkowski (17) enabled the Falcons to survive the grueling game. For Neumann, Bob Atene hit 14 field goals for 28 points — a CL postseason record — and scored 12 to help erase a 10-point deficit in the final 6:00 of regulation.

  In a game that generated headlines across the country, North’s junior varsity — filling in for the 12-man varsity squad, suspended by coach Jack Friel (also the disciplinarian) for cutting classes — rolled to a stirring victory. The youngsters, booed by North’s fans during warmups and hit with chants of ‘‘We want the varsity!’’ had not played for eight days and only split with McDevitt’s JVs during the regular season. The starters were Mike Kaiser (20 points), Iggy Brodzinski (19), Jim Boylan (14), Joe Evanosich (13) and Billy Dever (nine). Kaiser, Boylan and Brodzinski claimed 20, 17 and 15 rebounds, respectively. McDevitt was led by junior guard Bob Haas (26), who during the regular season had scored 51 points against Ryan to break the CL record.
Judge 50, La Salle 46
  Mike Krawczyk scored 24 points and Tim Fehrle (13) converted a layup with 1:02 left to break a 46-46 tie as Judge survived a scare against a team it had swamped twice during the regular season. Judge trailed, 41-24, before rallying. Bill Walters (19) led La Salle.
O’Hara 57, Roman 55 (3 ot)
  Sub Steve Maiocco, scoreless beforehand, nailed a 20-foot jumper at the buzzer to dampen Roman’s first playoff appearance since a prearranged preplayoff in 1959 (and before that in ’49). Joe Hazinsky (17) and Tom Ingelsby (11) led in scoring for O’Hara, which had possession for more than 12 of the final 13 minutes. John Proud (15) and Keith Coady (13) led Roman.
West 51, ST More 49 (ot)
  Ron Billingslea scored 21 points and tipped in a missed free throw with 0:35 left to make the difference. Bob Dennis (12) and Herm Lockley (11) helped. For More, Mike Jones scored 23 points and Humphrey Conix hit a jumper to force OT.

  Lou Ferro scored on a buzzer-beating tap as O’Hara won a thriller. The ball rolled around the rim twice, momentarily hung on the metal slab extending from the rim to the backboard and then fell in. The Lions had created a tie with 0:17 left on Steve Maiocco’s steal and layup, followed by Ray Martin’s steal. Joe Hazinsky scored 17 points. North’s Hank Siemiontkowski scored 26 points, including 13 in a row in the fourth quarter. Coach Jack Friel used two of his JV heroes from the quarterfinals — forward Mike Kaiser and guard Billy Dever.
Judge 64, West 52
  Rick Maerten (17) led four double-figure scorers for the Crusaders, who steamed to a 46-27 lead after three quarters. Bob Dennis (21) and Herm Lockley (15) paced West.

  One month after suffering a 75-stitch cut in his right hand, incurred when he collided with a pane of glass in a door in Dougherty’s gym, Bill ‘‘Bear’’ Banks returned to action with a 16-point effort. Kevin Kane added 13 points. McDevitt’s Bob Haas scored 19 points, but was held without a field goal in the second half.
North 55, Judge 51
  Bill O’Hara scored 14 points, Iggy Brodzinski and Pat McMullen added 12 apiece and Mark Williams had 10 before fouling out with 5:10 left. Thereafter, Vince Morrison scored 13 of his 16 points to draw Judge close.
Bonner 52, O’Hara 48
  Bob Sabol (15) and Ed Hastings (13) led in scoring and Joe Bonner drove for the clinching basket with just under a half-minute left. Frank Doyle (21) and Tom Ingelsby (12) led O’Hara.

  Six-seven Joe Newman, used as the sixth man in his first season of organized ball, scored 17 points and recorded six blocks. Bill Magarity and Kevin Kane scored 12 points each and Paul Tucker hit a 10-foot jumper to provide the lead for good, 34-32. Dennis Maguire (12) and Harry Edwards (11) led Judge.
North 74, Kenrick 54
  Jim Boylan (20, 20 rebounds), Gene Kweeder (13), Joe Rymal (11) and Billy Dever (10) led the way as North ruined Kenrick’s first playoff appearance. Jim Casciano (17) paced the losers, who shot 0-for-15 in the third quarter.

  Bonner stormed to a 33-17 lead in the first 13 minutes, but found itself trailing by seven points late in the third quarter. Jack McCormick (18) and Jim Haggarty (17) paced the Friars while The Prep’s John Jablonski poured in 27 points.

  Bill Magarity shot 7-for-8 and 7-for-10 for 21 points and plucked 12 rebounds while Joe Newman (16) and Kevin Kane (15) helped. For Neumann, David Jones had 15 points and Gene Prybella managed 12 before being ejected for throwing a punch.
North 64, Bonner 50
  As they’d done in 1968, the Falcons again turned a bizarre situation into victory. At the scheduled 2 p.m. start, coach Fran Dougherty, thinking his team was slated for the second game, was walking into the building and no Falcons were warming up. Officials gave North 15 minutes to put a team on the floor. When Dougherty reached the locker room, he found six players (four starters). The fifth starter, 6-5 Jim Boylan, rushed to the bench during the National Anthem and asked guard Billy Dever, ‘‘Which basket is ours?’’ Gene Kweeder and Joe Rymal scored 18 points apiece. Dever (13) and Boylan (nine) helped. Bonner’s Joe DiCocco scored 19 points. Two main men missed the game — North’s Joe Rapczynski (broken ankle) and Bonner’s John Cappelletti (sprained ankle).
