RECAPS OF CL PLAYOFFS
QUARTERFINALS
Neumann-Goretti 61, Roman 41

Where was the upset that everyone was talking about??? I mean everyone said that Roman would win, that they kept close with this team both times and they were finally going to get over the hump.   But did you really expect to see Neumann lose 2 straight games…I know I didn’t.  Neumann’s DJ Rivera was the player of the game tonight; the kid scored 25 points, 5 boards, 2 assists (both were on dunks), and 3 steals.  It was in the second half however when Rivera made the play of the game…Antonio “Scoop” Jardine tossed an alley-oop from half court and Rivera caught it with his back to the basket and dunked it…the play caused the early departure of half the Roman student section.   For Roman it was Mike Ringgold that played great; Ringgold finished with 16 points and 8 boards.  What I didn’t understand was why Roman didn’t give the ball to him every play, this guy couldn’t be stopped he was quick and athletic and always found a clear path on the baseline.
Random Notes
The over/under on dunks was 4 set by Colin Curtin.   Colin said over with 5 and was right, Rob Pearson went with exactly 4, and I went with 7 (thanks a lot Rivera and Wannamaker).
After Brad Wanamaker missed his dunk he was immediately yanked. Now I could be wrong on this but I don’t think he came back in.
Richard Jackson finished with 7 blocked shots.
Prep 60 West 47
Prep came out incredibly flat in this game even though everyone in the place knew West had no shot.   The thing that I wanted to see however was Reggie Redding.   I hadn’t seen Reggie play since last year’s title game, when I thought that Reggie would dominate the league this time next year.  Reggie got bigger; he posted up a lot more than last year.  However I was right in thinking he would dominate.  He scored 19, while pulling down 15 boards, and dishing out 4 assists.  It seemed as though every play Prep ran was designated for Reggie but he was so smooth, comfortable, and most importantly, unselfish with the ball.  West’s two football stars made things interesting in the first half as Derrell Hand, and Eric Brennan each hit buzzer beaters in the half.  Hand, a DT headed to ND, hit his on a runner at the end of quarter number one to make it a 14-10 game (Reggie had 11 of those 14 in case you were wondering), and Brennan, a frosh who is already receiving some D1 attention (Colorado may be no truth to rumor however), hit his on the wing to make it 24-20 at half.  Prep went on a three point scoring spree in the third and removed all doubt.
Dougherty 55 Ryan 47
Ziggy will carry Ryan to a W; it’s real hard to beat a team of equal talent three times in one year.   Statements I would agree with.  Too bad Dougherty has more talent (top to bottom) than Ryan, and Dwight Lyons (defensive player of the year) held Zig to 6-16 shooting.  Dougherty proved that they were too athletic and fast for most of Ryan’s players.
Wood 44, Judge 31
You could say that this game was a classical PCL North contest with 75 points overall.  Wood’s coach Joe Sette made a great move with his triangle and two on Judge srs. Damien Palentino and Mike Briscella.  Sette corrected the mistake he made in the last game of containing only Palentino, that game plan led to Briscella and other role players from Judge torching Wood in the second to last game of the year for the two teams.   Wood looked sluggish on offense, but their defense was so good that they got away with that sluggish D.  Wood’s defense held Palentino to 1-10 shooting for 5 points and Briscella to 7 points.  Wood got solid play from all seven of their guys in the rotation, but three of those guys stuck out.   Matt Spadafora dropped 13 points, Corey Filer scored 10 and had 3 steals, while Rob Pearson scored 10 and finished with 3 swats.   Wood finally got its first playoff win in 12 tries.
SEMIFINALS
SJ Prep 63, Dougherty 48
REGGIE REDDING had 16 points 6 boards and 5 assists…at the end of the first half.   Reggie ended up with 21 12 and 6 (could have finished with a triple double but a couple of Prep guys missed several open looks created by Reggie).  This one was over before it started…it was 35-8 at one point…Prep had more than 4x Dougherty’s points.  The real story was Sean Barker’s first point for varsity this year.  Barker wasn’t even supposed to play, he wasn’t supposed to run and cut…he didn’t care, he drove to the lane and missed.  He bombed one from the middle of nowhere…it rattled in and out.  Every Prep player on the floor knew they had to get Barker the ball so he could score, and they did.  Barker got the ball one more time and drove to the hole and missed again, but he was fouled.  Barker went to the line to take his first shot…as soon as he released it a Prep fan yelled out “Got it!!” and he did.  Barker finished the game with one point.
Neumann-Goretti 58 Wood 41
Matt Spadafora hit a three pointer to open up the game, and had the Wackies going nuts, thinking that Wood was going to give another nationally ranked team a lot of trouble.  That was the only positive thing that happened for Wood, a 3-0 lead.  Neumann went right down and scored with ease, and they did it again, and again, and again.  Wood wasn’t as fortunate as the only player who could create any type of space was Spads, but every time he beat his man to the rim another defender was waiting for him and swatted the ball away.  Neumann was always in control of the game, but when they were up by thirteen they let Allen Borovich get an open look from the top of the key.  The ball rattled in and out, and Neumann went down and hit a three of their own.  If that shot had fallen Wood would have been down 10 not 16, that could have been a turning point but it just didn’t happen.
FINAL
Neumann-Goretti 57, SJ Prep 44
This game was talked about as a game between pure talent and discipline.  Many said that Prep would walk away with a W because Neumann was too selfish, undisciplined, and lazy.  Neumann proved to be none of those.  Their defense was what won them this game, not their offensive talent.  Conor Kennedy held Joe Fox to 2 points, David Burton held Larry Loughery to 7, Corey O’Rourke was held scoreless by Earl Pettis (but that was due more to a broken wrist).   Reggie Redding finished with 23, but 15 of those points came in the first half with around 4 minutes left.  DJ Rivera held Reggie to 8 points from that point on.  Richard Jackson hardly played due to early foul trouble, and the great play of Kennedy, but he finished with 3 blocks to give him an average of 5.3 blocks a game in the playoffs.  N-G also proved that they are very unselfish and balanced offensively.  In the first postseason game Rivera led the way with 25 followed by Pettis with 19.   The second game the Saints were led by Burton’s 18 and Scoop Jardine’s 16.  In the finals all four of those players scored in double digits…Pettis 15, Scoop 15, Burton 12, and Rivera 10.  Pettis also finished with 10 boards 3 assists and two steals and Burton finished with 10 boards.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Wood a lot, La Salle hardly any
I read Ted’s report after this game and I was amazed when he said that there were not many stats in this game.  I found plenty, but I’ll talk about that later.   The first quarter of this game was like watching paint dry. I was actually thinking about leaving the game and catching the second half of my nine year old sister’s game. I mean, at least they can put up more than nine total points.  5-4 at the end of the first you gotta be kidding me. Wood had to be able to score more than 5 points in a quarter against La Salle. I mean, come on, my CYO team could put up five in a quarter against this team.  Thank God for the second quarter, a quarter in which Wood scored 14 points to La Salle’s four.  Matt Spadafora picked up the play for Wood in the second quarter with four points three steals and four boards.  Wood broke this game open in the third quarter outscoring La Salle 22-4 in the quarter to take a 41-12 lead after three.  In the third Spadafora continued to play great mixing 8 points with two boards a block and another steal.  Spads got a lot of help in the quarter as Wood shot 10-11 from the field in the quarter including 2-2 from long distance…both threes were from Allen Borovich.   With a 29-point lead after three Wood played all of their backups in the final frame.  For all of the Wackies in attendance the only thing that was on anyone’s mind was holding La Salle under 20 points.  When the quarter started it looked as Wood was in good shape allowing 4 points in each quarter…La Salle scored 7 in the fourth with about 4:30 left to give them 19 for the game. La Salle went on to miss two open layups which sealed the deal 19 points…PATHETIC.
JV/Random Notes
JV lost…hard to win without three of your best players
LaSalle finished with 7 steals…6 of those steals were actually bad passes by Wood…one was an actual steal by Marshall
Mike Topley…the smallest player in the PCL…did not attempt a single shot but finished with three assists and one TO
Joe Migliarese, LaSalle’s other frosh. finished with 4 pts and 4 boards
STATS
I know that Ted said there were not many stats in this game but I found plenty of stats (smile)
Wood shot 53% from the field going 4-10 from three and 16-28 from two…La Salle shot 2-19 from three and 6-20 from two to finish 21%
LaSalle finished with 14 TOs and only 5 assists
Wood out rebounded LaSalle 35-16 (Wood’s bench had 15 boards, 1 fewer than LaSalle’s total)
LaSalle only took FOUR free throws all game…they made one
Wood only needed to score one point in the second half top win this game
Matt Spadafora and Mike Murnane combined for 21 points more than LaSalle’s 19

FEB. 11
CATHOLIC NORTH
Wood 62, McDevitt 37
The first half of this game was very boring -- Wood came out incredibly flat -- but needs to be mentioned.   The only reason Wood kept up with McDevitt in the early going was MVP candidate Matt Spadafora.  Spads dropped nine points on 4-5 shooting while recording 1 steal, board, and assist in the first quarter.  That first quarter showing from Spads was the only thing that was a positive for Wood early on…the third quarter is when things really started to happen.  Wood was only up by 6 at the half, a stat that doesn’t sound that bad until you remember that Wood was up 20 on this team at the half in their first meeting.  Wood needed to get something going; they needed somebody to step up.  This game it was Allen Borovich’s turn to turn in a big-time game.  Allen just went off in the third quarter, dropping 7 points while recording 4 boards 3 assists and a steal in the third.  Wood outscored McDevitt 19-4 in the quarter and took a 45-24 lead and never looked back.
JV/Random Notes
Jim Malatesta hurt his back today in the JV game and could barely move…this injury hurts the JV squad because they are now without 3 of their better players.
Womack dropped a game high 21 points, more than ½ of BM’s total points tonight
McDevitt turned the ball over 14 times and only had 4 assists and shot 20% from the field tonight.
Report Card
Spads (B)             18 points but only 3 assists and 2 rebounds-2 steals
Allen (A+)            12 points all in the second half 5 assists 10 boards
Rob (B)            3 blocks were sick
Corey (B)            8 points but starting to play a more complete game with 5 boards and 2 steals
Piselli (B+)            9 points 4 assists 4 boards
Mearns (B-)             6 points but only shot 4 times (all shots from 3 point)

FEB. 9
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Wood 58, Conwell-Egan 48

Wood’s starting to make a habit of playing pretty pathetic in the early going of games.   They have been able to get away with it all year but there is absolutely no chance that they can play like this against anybody come playoff time.  Egan scored 9 points in the first quarter which is neither good nor bad, but it was great compared to Wood’s TWO . . . which were scored by Matt Spadafora.   Wood played better in the second quarter, as they were jumpstarted by Mike Murnane’s eight 2Q points.   Mearns has been the best sixth man in the North, and in this game he was by far the best player on the court.   The third quarter was boring until Mike Piselli made a lay-up which seemed to give Wood a spark in the third and really got things rolling as Means hit two more three’s and Spadafora dropped 7 in the quarter.  Egan tried to get back in it by fouling constantly in the fourth as Wood shot 24 FTs in the final frame, Murnane made 7-8 in that last quarter to give him a total of 21 points, a career high.
JV/Random Notes
Fran “Chise” McGlinn and FB superstar Chris Lorditch have both been lost for the year, I have been told.  McGlinn has an ankle injury and has been wearing a boot, while Lorditch may have torn a ligament in his foot but is not positive.  Lorditch’s basketball career is probably over as he will concentrate on track and more importantly FB.
All of my stats have been provided by assistant coach/JV coach
Robert Schmalbach
Wood shot 23-32 (72%) from the line, 19-24 (79%) in the fourth
Report Card
Mearns (A+)             21 points 3 steals 2 boards 2 assists
Spadafora (B+)        15 points 7 boards no TO but only 3 assists
Piselli (B+)               7 points 5 boards 2 assists steal
Filer (B)                   only 7 points on 1-5 shooting but 4 boards 3 assists 2 steals are above avg for Filer
Borovich(B-)             6 points 5 boards block

FEB. 4
CATHOLIC NORTH
Dougherty 69, Wood 57
I have to question the coaching of Joe Sette in this one. Wood's defense in the first half was pathetic, and when they finally got out of it, they tried to press Dougherty.  I was told it was a 2-1-2 press but it looked a lot more like a 3-1-1. Now usually I like the press, but Allen Borovich was playing in the middle, which meant he was the trap man. Allen is a good player, but he is not that fast.  Your trap man needs to be someone who can fly from sideline to sideline without getting tired.  Wood has two players that are perfect for this job, Mike Murnane and Corey Filer.  Every time Wood pressed it resulted in a Dougherty 2 on 1 against Mike Piselli, and Dougherty usually converted.  Meanwhile, nothing was done to get go-to guy Matt Spadafora open, or to free him for one-on-one situations. Spadafora was bothered all night by Dougherty. Every time he stepped in the lane he was smothered. Dougherty did an amazing job on Spadafora, holding him to 5 points.   The only player who could hit a shot was Corey Filer, who finished with 28 points (6 treys). He needed to be given the ball all night, yet it didn't happen. There were two other huge factors that contributed to the loss -- turnovers and officiating.   Turnovers are the one stat that I don’t keep but Wood must have had about 30 of them.  The officiating was actually the turning point in the game, when one of Dougherty’s players disagreed with a foul called on him he started to get in the ref’s face.  Not only did the kid get in his face: he was cursing and bumping the ref…that is an automatic technical foul that would probably give Wood the ball and two points.  The worst call that was made all night was when Robert Townsend took a pass on the wing just in front of the arc and made a lay-up and Piselli was called for a foul to give Townsend a three-point play.  Doesn’t sound like a terrible call right there but then again I forgot to mention that Townsend never took a dribble, instead he took three or four steps to get to the basket.  This was such an obvious call that 15 or 20 fans jumped from the bleachers onto the court and were yelling as loud as they could at the ref.  Even coach Mark Heimerdinger knew that Dougherty had gotten away with one there…Wood was down five at that point after fighting their way back from 13 down…the call gave Dougherty an eight point lead from which Wood could not recover.
I really shouldn’t take anything away from Dougherty’s players as they are the fastest and most athletic team in this division.  They didn’t miss from the foul line, and made the best turnaround of the year after losing to LaSalle to beat #1 Wood who is now 8-1.

 Report Card
Spadafora (D)             5 points 2 assists and went 1-8 from the line may have been Spadafora’s worst game ever
Filer (A+)            Filer made three point play after three point play behind the arc driving and it didn’t matter he wasn’t going to miss until it was already over
Piselli (B)            10 points 7 boards too bad that Filer was the only one that Piselli’s intensity rubbed off on
Borovich (C)            he had 8 points but he struggled from the field when Wood really needed him
Mearns (C+)            4 points 2 steals Mearns was another player who couldn’t buy a shot
Pearson (D+)            4 boards but they were all in the first half just couldn’t keep up with speedy Dougherty team
Dougherty
Lyons (A)             he had 9 points 2 steal and 2 assists and plays point…not great stats right?  He’s the one that held Matt to 5 points
Martin (A-)            Heimerdinger knew who to give the ball to 22 points 5 boards 2 steals
Mumford (B+)            he scored for Dougherty when everyone else was struggling for CD
Townsend (A-)            14 points led team with six boards and had a huge block late in the game
Simpson (C-)            didn’t really stand out except for his constant whining

BOOCH REFUSES TO PUT DATES ON HIS REPORT. I'M TOO TIRED TO LOOK IT UP.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Wood 58, North 49
Spadafora, Borovich, Murnane and Filer…all three of these Wood players have led their team in scoring in a game.  But Mike Piselli?  The guy whose specialty is bringing intensity, defense, leadership, and most importantly rebounding?  Piselli hardly ever shoots because he never really has to…when he does shoot it is usually a mid range jumper or a lay-up after he gets a pass from a driving teammate.  Tonight Piselli was absolutely incredible he shot 7 of 9 from the field and finished with 14 points.  Piselli was hitting shots from everywhere…mid range, baseline, just inside the arc and underneath.   North jumped out to an early lead, just like everybody else is against Wood lately, led by Jeremy Coombs.  Coombs dominated in the first five minutes but then he disappeared for the rest of the game, he had 4 points and 6 boards…I think he had 4 and 3 in those first five minutes.  North did a pretty good job of keeping superstar Matt Spadafora from scoring as Spadafora finished with 2 first half points which came on a break away dunk.  It looked like Corey Filer’s struggles would continue as he missed his only first half attempt.  The second half was completely different than the close first half…Wood broke it open again against North.  Wood got solid play from Allen Borovich, Spadafora, and Rob Pearson, who combined for 32 points and 19 rebounds in the game.
JV/Random Notes
Jim Malatesta scored 17 points in the JV game, which pretty much forced Joe Sette to give him some playing time in the varsity game.  Malatesta missed a three and was immediately taken out.  J-mal needs some more playing time in my opinion because he can handle the ball as good as anyone in the league and he can play D shoot and has good speed. Finally Wood is playing a little bit better…ever since the La Salle game Wood was playing worse and worse.  This North game they didn’t play good but they didn’t get worse. They got a little better.
Paul Breen, a k a The Breen Scene, was in attendance at the game, Paul recently said things like Matt Spadafora is overrated compared to Joe Zeglinski “the best player in the league," I should reconsider my pick of Corey Filer as a midseason all star, and that the Wackies are overrated.
Spadafora/Zeglinski
Well, if Matt Spadafora shot as many times as Joe Zeglinski did in their two meetings this year he would have scored 17 points in the first game and 32 in the second game.  Spadafora is also a more complete player right now averaging about 6 assists and over 4 rebounds and over 2 steals a game.  Zeg is an incredible player and is only going to get better, but right now Spadafora is the MVP.
Filer

My pick for Filer was a good one and I would never think about reconsidering it.  The second game against Ryan was not included in my thoughts for these picks and even if they were it would be one bad game, everyone has bad games even the best including superstars like Spadafora (2-8 in first game of year) and Zieglinski (15 missed shots in his first game).
Wackies
In the words of Wood Sr. Joe Taylor, “The day you quiet the Wackies is the day we cease to exist.  We are in a league of our own at this point.   We walked into your gym and chanted things such as ‘This is our house,’ and ‘Undefeated’.”
Special Thanks to Puck who once again gave me his stats at the end of the game.

JAN. 28
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Archbishop Wood 43, Archbishop Zeglinski, er, Ryan 40
I thought this would be Wood’s toughest test in the second half of league play because Ryan was a good team with decent size and speed.  I did not; however, expect Wood to play as bad as they did.  Ryan jumped out to an early 9-2 lead and was playing pretty good but not great.  Mike Varanavage led the team with ten points in the opening quarter while Jon Bruce was setting the tone for the Raiders with great hustle.  In the second quarter Wood started to play a little bit better than their horrendous first quarter display.  Matt Spadafora, Allen Borovich, and Mike Murnane led a balanced attack as they chipped away at the Raider lead.  Wood ended both the first and second quarters trying to hold for the last shot but turned the ball over both times.  Despite their worst half of the year Wood found themselves trailing by a mere four points at the half.    The third quarter was an overall boring quarter in which Ryan scored 6 points and Wood scored eight.  The fourth quarter belonged to Spadafora and Borovich as Spadafora scored all of Wood’s first eight points in the quarter.  Ryan kept hitting shots in response to Spadafora and was up 38-37 with little time remaining.  Wood desperately needed a stop but Ryan’s superstar Joe Zeglinski had the ball.  Corey Filer, one of Wood’s best defenders, tried his best to stop Zig but ended up committing a foul.  (It was later pointed out to me that it wasn’t such a bad thing that Zig was fouled.  My stat man Jim Malatesta, father of jr. PG Jim Malatesta, told me that Joe missed three straight FTs in the first half…Mr. Malatesta and I both saw Joe play at Calvary coming from Rhawnhurst and neither of us could remember him missing three straight FTs ever) After Zig hit both attempts, Wood was down 40-37.  Wood looked to Spadafora again but he couldn’t get an open look so he kicked it out to Borovich who drained the three over 6’8” Kevin Hudgeons.  Not only did Borovich hit the three he was drilled by the oncoming Hudgeons who was called for the foul.   Borovich stepped to the line for a rare four-point play and hit the free throw to give Wood a one-point lead.  Varanavage attempted a three pointer but it fell short…the rebound; however was pulled down by Hudgeons who tried to sneak around the other side of the basket on somewhat of a reverse lay up to take the lead and maybe win the game.  What Hudgeons did not expect was the most amazing block I have seen all year from C Rob Pearson.  Pearson made the block out of nowhere but the ball then proceeded to bounce off of the leg of Hudgeons and give the ball back to Wood.  Ryan was forced to foul Matt Spadafora with fifteen seconds left…Spadafora hit both and put Wood up by three.   Zeglinski had two chances to tie the game with threes but missed them both.   On the first attempt Zig had a good look and got a clean shot off but it bounced out.  Zieg’s second attempt was a rushed shot as he only had five seconds to get the ball down court.

Report Card

Spadafora (A)       had 18 points on only eight shots and pulled down five boards.  His 10 fourth quarter points were huge

Borovich (B+)       came through clutch with his four-point play to win the game finished with 11 points.

Pearson (A-)          Rob only scored four points but his 12 boards were huge and his block on Hudgeons was the defensive play of the game

Murnane (B)           Mearns kept them close in the early going again, without Mearns Wood could very easily be 5-2 instead of 7-0

Zieglinski (A-)         went 7-14 from the floor, a big improvement from his 5-20 performance at Wood -- 18 points 10 boards but couldn’t come up clutch in the end

Hudgeons (C+)       four points six boards; not the greatest numbers

Varanavage (B+)     13 points to give Ryan a big lead early

Bruce(B+)              It looked like Bruce was the only player on Ryan that was hustling on the court.

Midseason Report

Thoughts on Teams
Arch. Wood
As expected they are the best team in the division; best team because they can be led by just about anybody, from Spadafora to Filer to Borovich to Murnane. (6-0)
Arch. Ryan
Zeglinski having another great year has had solid help from Mike Varanavage, Kevin Hudgeons, and Jon Bruce. (5-2)
Dougherty
I thought they were too young and thought that a couple of guys would be selfish players but I was dead wrong, Mark Heimerdinger has done a great job…maybe the most athletic team in the division. (5-2)
North
They haven’t been as good as I thought they would be as they were blown out by Wood, lost to Ryan and barely squeaked by Judge and Dougherty and only beat a bad Egan team by three.  Despite their poor play North is still 5-2 and has been hurt by injuries (Nate Edwards) and a suspension (Jeremy Coombs)…they’ll still make the playoffs I think. (5-2)
Judge
They’ve lost a couple of close ones including at home vs. Wood and against North.  Palantino has played great from behind the arc and Art Livingston looks dominant on the boards.  They have a shot at the playoffs but I think it’ll be hard to overcome 2-4.
McDevitt
Looked good early on but have been hurt big time by the loss of PG Gregory Stitt.  Don’t be surprised if they lose to LaSalle or Egan…actually I would be surprised. Egan’s bad…La Salle is pathetic (sorry). (2-5)
Egan
They’re bad but they play hard and keep games close every so often (1-5)
LaSalle
My uncle will never hear the end of this year…worst BB team I’ve seen since I’ve been in HS…can u say 0-14????

Games to Watch
1)        Wood @ Ryan: January 28, 2005 8pm (can Wood stay unbeaten in toughest test left in the second half)
2)
Judge @ North: January 28, 2005 7:30 (can North squeak by again or will FJ keep their playoff hopes alive)
3)
La Salle@ Conwell-Egan: Friday, February 18 7:30 (will La Salle stay winless)

            WOOD
Wood will win their first playoff game and compete with SJP and Neumann-Goretti for the title this year.  This is possible because Wood has a great starting five the best bench player in either league, they can pass (Spadafora, Mearns, Filer, Jmal, Piselli from the post), they can rebound (Spadafora, Piselli, Rob, Borovich), defend (Filer Piselli and Spadafora are some of the best in the league), they can handle the ball better than anybody (Spadafora, Filer, Borovich, Mearns, Jmal, Crawford), they can all run the floor, and they can score; Spadafora, Mearns, Filer, Borovich, and Crawford have all led the team in scoring this year Piselli can score when needed, and Rob could lead them in scoring in an upcoming game.

 Midseason Report Card

Matt “Moose” Spadafora (A)            14.2 ppg 5.5 ass. 4 reb 2.2 steals             has done a great job running this team and has become a complete player and can dominate in any way the MVP in the entire league

Corey Filer (A-)             12.5 ppg 3 reb 1.5 steals 2.5 assists             absolutely incredible early in the year scoring at will has slowed down in the last two games

Mike Piselli (A-)             5.5 ppg leads team with almost 7 reb a game 2.2 assists             playing great down low and has been a very intense player which boosts Wood throughout the game

Allen Borovich (B+)             5.3 ppg 4.5 reb             has been great at knowing when to shoot and when to let his teammates take control he really understands the game and is unselfish… whatever it takes to win he says

Rob Pearson (B-)                   6.2 ppg 5.2 reb            getting better and better each game; big game against the North’s biggest guy Kevin Hudgeons

Mike Murnane (A)       7.5 ppg 2 reb 2 steals 2.5 assists             best sixth man anywhere, fast can defend can shoot, handle, can do it all…he’s the x factor for Wood this year

JAN. 21
CATHOLIC NORTH
Wood 55, Judge 47
Matt Spadafora showed everyone in attendance why is the MVP, and most dominant player in this league.   He single handedly took control of this game late and carried his team to a victory.  Spadafora scored 23 points, 15 of those coming in the fourth quarter.  Father Judge dominated in the early going and made it look like they were going to beat Wood at Judge for…I don’t know 11th straight year I think (maybe Ted can help me with this one).  Judge’s Art Livingston and Jim Schule absolutely dominated the glass combining for 12 first half boards (AL-7, JS-5).  Wood looked like it had something going at the end of the first half when they started to press but that also failed when Damien Palantino hit a couple of bombs to break the press.  Judge played pretty good but not that good.  Judge was helped out by the fact that Wood couldn’t throw the ball into the ocean in the first and early second quarter.  It was Mike Murnane coming off of the bench that kept Wood in the game as he scored 8 of his 10 points in the second quarter.   Mearns was the only Viking who could hit a jumper.  In the second half Wood played a little bit better but not much.  Rob Pearson has been playing very good lately, but he was simply outmatched tonight.   Pearson’s size usually causes mismatches that favor Wood and it looked like his size would help again…but that was before the game and before he couldn’t buy a shot (along with the rest of the team).  Joe Sette tried a couple of different defenses to keep Rob in to gain an advantage.  Wood tried a 2-3 zone but Palantino hit too many open shots, so Wood tried a box and one on Palantino…Judge just stalled with the lead.  This forced Wood to go man but Livingston was too quick for Rob, then they tried to put Rob on Mike Briscella, but Briscella was even faster.  Rob didn’t play bad he just didn’t match up good tonight.  In the fourth quarter Moose took over…he dominated…he scored inside and outside; he got to the line…he DOMINATED.   It didn’t look too good for Wood late as they were down by six with about a minute to go, but Wood kept chipping away getting the lead down to two and Judge fouled Moose. Of course he hit them both and sent the game into overtime.  Wood finally woke up in overtime as they were led by three huge boards from Mike Piselli, and six points from Allen Borovich.
Random Notes
Corey Filer looked a little too much like the Corey from the beginning of last year…making some dumb fouls but they were all aggressive
Justin Decristofaro showed off his left arm when he threw a long (TD) pass to Palantino for a wide-open trey
Pat Binder has been playing pretty good in his minutes, giving Piselli and Borovich a break.
I think Wood’s one and only weakness was exposed in this game but I’m not going to say what it is….
This was easily the best game in either league so far.  It had a little bit of everything. Everyone was into this game…even the parents who were going nuts.
Moose now has 1032. You know if you switched the 3 and 0 he would be tied with Tim Whelan for the all-time Wood lead (he needs 270 points in 8 guaranteed games probably has 10 or 11 left…that’s around 27 ppg)
Hey, coach Sette, where was Jimmy Malatesta late in the game when Filer fouled out? I mean you probably could have used an extra ball handler, shooter, and a quick defender
9-18 Judge            24-31 Wood  FT’s win games

Report Card
Moose A+            23 points 5 rebounds 4 assists 3 steals and a huge block in OT finally that dominating game I know he could have…MVP MVP MVP
Borovich A-            6 of 10 in OT and led the team with seven boards
Mearns A             the reason Wood had a chance late in the game
Piselli B-            3 OT boards were huge and boosted his grade…scared some people when he tweaked his ankle in the early going…turned out he was fine
Filer C just an overall off night…he’ll rebound quickly
Pearson C+            overmatched tonight by speed but I predict that he will be dominant in Friday’s game against Ryan
Palantino A            6 treys 23 points…that’s good
Livingston A- 11 boards and 7 points too bad he’s only 6’3”
Schule B            6 boards 8 points are decent numbers
Briscella B            6 points 2 boards??? That’s gotta be wrong could have sworn he had more
Decristofaro             I saw him play both JV and varsity last year and he is really getting way too little time…he can shoot handle defend and he’s an all around great athlete 4 boards 2 dimes.

Wood 60, La Salle 25
Now I know that La Salle is having an off year, or rebuilding year, but I actually felt bad for them.  I mean Wood played their worst game of their Northern Division play yet still won by 35.  I also felt bad for freshman PG Mike Topley, who heard it all night long from the Wackies.  I don't want to be mean or anything, but 25 points? That's just bad.

JAN. 14
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Wood 77, McDevitt 40
This one was all Wood right from the opening tip.  Wood moved the ball around amazing in the first quarter as they had 8 assists on nine field goals.  While Wood was making almost everything McDevitt couldn’t even score on their fast breaks.   As Richard Womack made a nice steal and raced for an easy two, Allen Borovich came out of nowhere to make an unbelievable block, Borovich’s block actually reminded me of the block that Tayshaun Prince made on Reggie Miller in last year’s playoffs.  Borovich played great all around in the first quarter with the block three assists and two boards.  Wood continued to dominate in the second outscoring McDevitt 14-3 in the quarter to give Wood a 20-point lead going into the half.  Borovich continued his awesome play in the second as he made two more assists and two more boards to go along with another block.  In the third Borovich went down with an injured knee although he did not return it didn’t look too serious.  Matt “Moose” Spadafora picked up right where Borovich left off however with three assists three boards and two steals.   It was mid to late third quarter that really ended the game as Moose made a steal and stopped in the middle of the lane and finally made a dunk.  It was only a simple one handed jam but Moose threw it down hard as he shook the backboard and made the Warminster Wackies go nuts.  Fans were on the court throwing each other around until the end of the quarter.  As the quarter ended Wood was up by 30 and had all of the subs in.  All of the backups played great, Pat Binder had 6 assists which led the team, while Chris Crawford pulled down 6 boards, and Sean Gallagher scored 10 points pulled down 4 boards and blocked 2 shots.  Richard Womack looked like the only McDevitt player that wanted to shoot as he dropped 19 points, but I really liked McDevitt’s defensive intensity.
JV/ Random Notes
Fran McGlinn has been so dominant in JV that Joe Sette has been forced to put him back on the varsity roster.  McGlinn had 16 points while Jim Malatesta (8), John Schwartz (6), and FB super star Chris Lorditch (9) all played good in Wood’s second straight JV win.
Moose’s dunk troubles are over, and Moose says that all that’s left is throwing it down over someone.
   Both
Allen Borovich and Corey Filer were injured during the game but both should be back at full strength against LaSalle on Monday night.
PG Gregory Stitt did not play; I heard that it was due to a broken collarbone, which would mean he is out for a good period of time, which is not good for McDevitt.
Does anyone know if McDevitt’s Steve Merlini goes tanning?  If you do, let me know.
I am really looking forward too see how bad Wood is going to beat La Salle just so I can rub it in my Uncle’s face who has constantly heckled me about Wood being inferior to LaSalle.  It will be even better this year because his son, my cousin Mike Topley, was just called up to varsity, because they don’t have anyone besides a 5’3” frosh to handle the ball.
Three Stars
1 Moose             he dunked
2 Borovich            8 pts 5 ast 4 reb and 2 blk in 2 quarters
3 Pearson/Gallagher             combined for 20 pts 11 reb and 2 blk
Report Card
Moose (A+)             he dunked
Filer (B)           10 pts and 2 steals but didn’t play as good on the boards and assists than in other games with only one of each…but still hustles at all times (better get Jack’s Hustle Player of the year)
Piselli (B)          4pts 2 steals but down on the boards with only three
Borovich (A)    hopefully will be back by Monday
Pearson (B+)    10 points and 7 boards is pretty good
Murnane (B+)  6 points but played decent defense and had three steals
Malatesta (B-) looked uncomfortable and no assists but had 3 boards
Binder (A)        led team with 6 assists also chipped in with 5 points
Crawford (B)   been seeing less and less time ever since his ankle injury but played good with 6 boards
Gallagher (A)    10 points 4 boards and 2 blocks “Big Red” was everywhere
McGlinn (A-)             4 points 2 boards and 2 assists in limited time “Chise” will be great in years to come

JAN. 10
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Wood 60, Dougherty 47
Corey Filer has been red hot in PCL play.  Filer has been averaging 17 points 3 assists 1.7 steals and 3.7 rebounds per game in the league.  Filer had 19 in this game with 3 assists.  It was Matt Spadafora’s night however as he totaled 14 points, 7 assists, 5 steals, 3 boards and a block.  With 5:41 in the fourth Spadafora hit a jumper in the lane to give him 1,001 points for his career.  Together Spadafora and Filer combine for the best backcourt in the division…no one else is even close right now.  Wood mostly controlled the game but they turned the ball over way too much.  Dougherty is very young but they are also very athletic and made a lot of nice steals.  Leading the way for Dougherty was Justin Minter (plays bigger than he is) with 7 points and 8 boards (5 off.), Josh Martin (13 points 5 boards and a huge block), and Robert Townsend (10 points and 3 steals).   Wood proved to have too many weapons for CD despite all of the turnovers.   Mike Murnane played great again with 13 points 5 assists and 3 steals.  Mike Piselli also played good for Wood with 7 points 6 boards a block and 5 assists (Mike’s dad insists he had at least 8 assists).  Rob Pearson and Allen Borovich didn’t put up great numbers but still played pretty good.
JV/ Random Notes
Wood got their first league win of the year as they were led once again by Jim Malatesta (12 points) and Fran “Chise” McGlinn (11 points) as they won 51-31.
Moose’s dunk troubles are still following him.  Tonight Moose had the ball stolen away from him by Robert Townsend who made a hard one-handed dunk.
Wood ended Dougherty’s 41 game win streak in the North
Jim Malatesta saw some time for varsity tonight and tried to make the best of it.   In the third J-Mal drove along the baseline and put up a very high floater.   I thought the ball hit the side of the backboard because it was so high but then realized that it was a block when it went
flying in the other direction.
Wood’s fans a.k.a. the “Warminter Wackies” turned out a very decent sized crowd and Jay Halbriener, Andrew Sharp, and the  Wackies founder Doug Martin brought the Moose O Meter
All stats are through the third quarter because of the signing of the Moose O Meter.
Three Stars
1          Matt “Moose” Spadafora            had his best and most complete game in his 1000-point game
2          Corey Filer     Filer has been amazing and is looking like an MVP candidate.
3          Mike Murnane            awesome in the second quarter with 4 assists and 2 steals and finished with 13 points
Report Card
Moose (A+)            averaging 6 assists in the North and might be best player in entire PCL
Filer (A)            another 19 point game another great night shooting
Murnane (A)            13 points 3 steals and 5 assists, and still best sixth man I’ve seen
Piselli (B+)            7 points and 6 boards, averaging 8.3 boards a game
Pearson (B-)            5 points but didn’t force any bad shots and pulled down four boards
Dougherty
Lyons (B-)             4 points
Martin (B)             13 points was CD’s leading scorer
Minter (A)            like the way he crashes the offensive boards had 5 off. Rebounds
Mumford (A-)            has a very nice shot and is only a frosh.
McNicholas (C+)     played pretty big on the glass had 6 boards in limited time
Townsend (A-)             10 pts 3 rebounds and 3 steals is best sixth man besides Murnane

JAN. 10
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Wood 55, N. Catholic 34
In my Catholic League preview I said that North would finish second in the division.  They looked like they would finish seventh (La Salle is really bad) the way that they played, but I also said that North needed to be healthy to finish second, and tonight they weren’t exactly healthy.  North was missing two starters, in Jeremy Coombs (suspended) and Nate Edwards (injured).  In the first quarter it was F Allen Borovich who didn’t seem to be fazed by the Pit’s small gym and roof and slippery floor as he scored all five of his points in the quarter.  After jumping out to a three point lead Wood fell behind for the first and only time as all nine of North’s second quarter points came on three pointers (John Adamski, Hanif Edwards, and Danny Breen) to give North a 19-18 lead.  Joe Sette then called a time out and switched his defense from a 2-3 zone to a 3-2 zone, which would shut out North for the rest of the quarter.  After the switch Wood went on another run, this time a 12-0 run to end the half, they were led by guards Corey Filer and Matt “Moose” Spadafora who combined for 11 of Wood’s 17 second quarter points.  Wood’s 3-2 defense was amazing in the second half as North was held to 15 points in the half, none of those points came from behind the arc.  Andrew Pomager scored all six of his points in the third quarter, but the game was pretty much over as Wood was up by 19 at the end of the quarter.  I was really impressed by C Rob Pearson’s performance as he finally had a big night on the boards with nine; Rob was also perfect from the floor going 3 for 3.  Corey Filer continued to play great for Wood as he finished with 19 points 5 rebounds 3 assists and 2 steals.
JV/ Other Random Notes
Wood’s JV team lost their second straight JV game and is now 0-2 in the PCL North after starting 8-0.
Matt “Moose” Spadafora’s dunk troubles followed him to The Pit. In the fourth quarter Filer made a nice steal and gave the ball to Moose for a breakaway.  Right before Moose got to the basket he stopped to go up for the dunk, but slipped and lost the ball out of bounds (Sr. football player Doug "The Thug" Martin, a TE/DB, made his best catch since his interception against Dougherty when he caught the falling Spadafora).  The last time that Moose tried to dunk in a game was his frosh year at Judge when he was denied by the front of the rim.
Wood’s fans led by Justin Stedman, John McFadden, Andrew King and Morgan Keller, pretty much owned North’s fans all night.   Wood has also owned North in everything else recently, beating them 51-0 (2003) and 35-0 (2004) in FB.  Wood is also 3-1 against North’s BB team in the last two years and beat them twice in soccer this year.
Special thanks to the legendary Puck…I forgot a pen and couldn’t get the stats.  When I went to get the point totals from my stat man Jim Malatesta, Puck gave me all the rebounds assists and steals.  He was a little hesitant to give me North’s stats, and only told me that Rod had 9 boards…he said nothing else was worth writing down (smile).
Three Stars
1 Corey Filer                                19 points 5 rebounds 3 assists and 2 steals.
2 Rob Pearson                             9 rebounds 7 points 3/3 FG
3 Matt “Moose” Spadafora         13 points and 6 assists; he continues to play team basketball rather than trying to score 20 ppg.
Report Card
Moose (A-)             he’s turning the ball over less every game
Filer (A+)            starting to make a name for himself
Pearson (A)            seems to always play his best at North
Piselli (B+)            scored 4 but had another solid game on the boards with 6
Borovich (B)    5 pts and 6 boards, but knows when he needs to shoot and when he needs to pass, etc.
Murnane (B-)   5 points a steal and a couple of assists
North
Rod (B+)         4 points and 9 rebounds was all over
Pomager (B)     6 points, all in the third quarter…still has that weird looking shot and seemed out of place down low
Adamski (C)    all 6 of his points came from behind the arc and early on…was ice cold the rest of the night
Breen (B+)       led North with 8 points and was pretty consistent from the floor
Edwards (C+)  Edwards only hit one three and had a few turnovers

JAN. 3
CATHOLIC NORTH
Wood 50, Ryan 38
This game started with a lot of hype.  It was Wood vs. Ryan the teams that most people expect to finish one and two in the Northern division…it was Spadafora vs. Zeglinski, the race for MVP…it was a game that featured a couple of the divisions better big men.  But the biggest hype of the game was when would Zeglinski hit 1,000 points for his career?  With 1:53 remaining in the first quarter Jr WG Mike Varanavage gave the ball to Zieglinski on the left wing, and recorded his only assist of the night as Zeglinski hit the three to give him a 1,000 points exactly.  The game then paused as Zeglinski gave the ball to his parents and younger brother Sam (Penn Charter), and was applauded by everyone in attendance.  The amazing thing about Zeglinski’s 1,000 points is that Joe did it 11 games into his junior year.  However it was Wood that controlled the second quarter as they went on a nice run to pull away from Ryan.  The run was started by a block from 6-9 C Rob Pearson, which was controlled by Wood and turned into an easy two points in transition.   The highlight of the Wood run was when Sr PG Mike Murnane made a nice steal and took it the length of the court for a layup and the foul.  In the third Ryan came back led by Zeglinski and 6-8 C Kevin Hudgeons as Wood was outhustled (even with Piselli and Filer) and outrebounded (8-2).  Ryan’s success continued into the fourth quarter as Zeglinski hit a jumper and then made a great pass to Hudgeons to give Ryan a two-point lead.  However it was Corey Filer who took control for Wood as he hit a three from Spadafora, then made a great steal and assisted Spadafora on a three point play which was the highlight of a 14-0 run that put Ryan away.
JV Notes: Fran McGlinn and Jimmy Malatesta led Wood’s JV attack as J-Mal finished wit 7 assists and McGlinn scored 18 points
3 Stars: 1 Corey Filer 13 points 2 steals 2 assists and 3 rebounds and as always was out hustling everyone on the court at all times
2 Mike Piselli had 13 rebound for Wood and scored 6 points which is exactly what Wood needs Piselli to do dominate the glass (even though he’s only 6’) and score a couple of timely points

3 Joe Zeglinski struggled from the field but still scored 15 points and made 4 assists and he scored his 1,000-point

Report Card

Matt Spadafora A- 7 points 4 assists 3 boards 2 steals and a block starting to become a great PG and an even better team player not caring about his stats only caring about the win

Corey Filer A 13 points 2 steals and assists and three boards

Mike Piselli A+ only 6 points but an awesome 13 boards (5, 3, 1, 4) and he’s only 6’ he just plays harder than anyone in the league

Rob Pearson B 9 points and a huge block to start a good second quarter run but only 3 boards hurt his grade

Mike Murnane B+8 points 2 assists one steal one board but he barely played except that second quarter.

Joe Zeglinski A- poor shooting hurt his team in the long run but he knows it more than anyone and should rebound with a huge game against LaSalle

Kevin Hudgeons B 6 points 9 boards and 3 steals

Jon Bruce C+ 6 points 2 boards steal

Mike Varanavage B 5 points 5 boards 2 steals and an assist…reminded me of Filer and Piselli with his hustle despite being undersized

Tom Manes C 6 points 2 boards and a steal

DEC. 17
NON-LEAGUE
Wood 59, Haverford School 29
What a boring game.  I never really thought a team could play so bad as Haverford did tonight.  The game started off with the normal heckling by the Warminster Wackies during the Haverford warm ups, but Haverford’s center, Ted Schreck, often turned and stared at the crowd while trying to be tough.   Then he tried to be even cooler by throwing it down during warm ups.   Doing this Schreck made himself an easy target for the wackies to pick on.   The rest of the night he was booed every time he touched the ball.   He finished with no points.  Wood on the other hand looked very good again tonight, once again playing without Mike Piselli and   Corey Filer.  Leading Wood for the second straight game was senior G Mike Murnane.  “Mearns”, normally a backup for Filer, dropped 13 points with a couple of nice steals and assists, and 4 rebounds.  Senior transfer Allen Borovich (AFS) and senior Matt “Moose” Spadafora each scored 12 points, while “Moose” made some nice assists Allen was cleaning the glass with 9 boards.  Junior Chris Crawford was next in line with 9 points, most coming off of offensive rebounds.   Junior PG Jim Malatesta played great again, totaling 6 points and 4 assists.  Fran “Chise” McGlinn added 4 points (the first points of his varsity career) and 2 boards, with limited minutes.  “Chise” is usually the team’s third center behind Rob Pearson and Sean Gallagher; Gallagher was out with a broken nose while Rob was held to limited time because of a broken toe.   Next year “Chise” will be Wood's big man and should be great putting up about 7 or 8 a game, but will have his biggest effect on the boards.   Pearson only had 3 points tonight but did a better job defensively, and better on the boards despite a broken toe.  The best defensive player; however, was senior Pat Binder, who finished with 4 boards and three incredible blocks that excited the entire crowd. Piselli and Filer are both expected to return some time next week.  Getting these two back will be huge for Wood, as they get a solid rebounder in Piselli, and another scoring threat in Filer.   But the things that Wood gets with these two players are great defense, hustle, and leadership.  The last two games Wood has played pretty laid back, which will all change with the return of their two emotional leaders.  This will also put “Mearns” back on the bench, and probably give Wood the best sixth man in both divisions.  It will also give Wood even more depth to an already deep team with Malatesta, Binder, Crawford, Gallagher, McGlinn, and “Mearns”.
Report Card
Moose           B+             I still think he needs to get a little more greedy even though he is getting everyone involved…whatever gets the wins I guess.

DEC 16
CATHOLIC LEAGUE NORTH PREVIEW

1                     Archbishop Wood (Joe Sette)
Big Game
: @ Father Judge: Wood hasn’t won at Judge for a long time, but they will need to win there this year to prove they can beat a good team on the road.
Key Players: everyone on the roster will be a key player on the team this year as they are the deepest team in the North.
Keys to Success: They need Matt Spadafora to be at the top of his game and will need Corey Filer and Allen Borovich to help on Off. They will also need Rob Pearson and Mike Piselli to be factors down low.  And the bench led by Mike Murnane and Jim Malatesta needs to contribute a lot of minutes.
What to Expect: Wood should win the North this year led by Spadafora who looks to be an early MVP candidate.

2                     North Catholic (Mike McCarron)
Big Game:
@ Wood:  NC was the only team besides Dougherty to beat Wood at home last year as they will look to do it again early in the year and prove they are a contender in the North.
Key Players: John Adamski and Andrew Pomager: Pomager and Adamski were both great players last year and should only get better this year.
Keys to Success: The Falcons will need to stay healthy this year (last year they were bothered by two injuries, one early in the season one later on) and they will also need to show consistency.
What to Expect: If they are healthy they have the best chance to challenge Wood for the North title.

3                     Archbishop Ryan (Bernie Rogers)
Big Game:
vs North: this game will take place late in the season between two teams that have a very good chance to win the Northern Division.
Key Players: Joe Zeglinski and Kevin Hudgeons: Zeglinski is an early candidate for the MVP along with Spadafora.  Hudgeons is a 6-8 center with a lot of talent.
Keys to Success: They need Zieglinski and Hudgeons to stay healthy; Zieg was bothered by an ankle injury during football, which kept him out earlier in the Basketball season, while Hudgeons is currently sitting out with a knee injury.
What to Expect: If Zieg and Hudgeons stay healthy they will finish anywhere from one to four if not they won’t make the playoffs.

4                     Father Judge (Bill Fox)
Big Game:
@ Wood: can they compete aginst the best in an away game late in the season; this will be Judge’s toughest game of the year.
Key Players: Mike Briscella Arthur Livingston and Justin DeCristofaro:  Briscella and Livingston will be big contributors down low as DeCristofaro will look to pick up right where he left off in football (Justin was 1st team all-catholic throwing for over 1400 yards) and knock down the three ball for Judge.
Keys to Success: They need to overcome a huge loss at the PG position when Tim McCauley went down for the season with a knee injury in a summer league.
What to Expect: They will make the playoffs as a three or four seed and I think they can upset a team in the first round.

5                     Conwell Egan (Rich Schafer)
Big Game:
@ Ryan: can they upset Ryan at home and sneak into the playoffs.
Key Players: Matt Burns and Mark Kostic: Burns is a great outside shooter while Kostic will provide some stability in the middle.
Key to Success: They will need to play very good defense and play as a team as they don’t really have a player that can take control of a game.
What to Expect: They could possibly sneak into the playoffs with a decent team and will definitely make the playoffs if Ryan is plagued by injuries.

6                     La Salle (Joe Dempsey)
Big Game:
vs Wood: what will the La Salle fans cheer about with their basketball team in disarray.
Key Player: Joe Sobocinski: the only player that I can remember from last year…but at least he was good last year.
Key to Success: Follow the characteristics of Sobocinski, he was good down low last year and was always hustling.
What to Expect: Not a lot.  Marty quit for a reason…they’re not that great.

7                     Cardinal Dougherty (Mark Heimerdinger)
Big Game:
@ McDevitt: will try and keep McDevitt in the basement and avoid falling from the very top to the bottom.
Key Players: uuuhhh????
Key to Success: beat McDevitt twice and stay out of the basement.
What to Expect: they will finish either sixth if they can beat La Salle and 7th if they can’t.

8                     McDevitt (Jack Rutter)
Big Game:
@ Dougherty: once again…who will finish at the bottom.
Key Player: Greg Stitt:  very explosive and can handle the ball, and he’s their best player.
Key to Success: hope that Stitt can lead the team to a couple of wins over Dougherty and LaSalle.
What to Expect: they’ll probably finish in the basement again this year.

DEC. 15
NON-LEAGUE
Neumann-Goretti 64, Wood 56
A couple of local college coaches were out this game.   Both John Chaney and Jay Wright were there, probably scouting Neumann’s David Burton.  Neumann came into the game ranked number 21 in the country by USA Today, while Wood came in at 2-1 with SRs Mike Piselli (6’ PF) and Corey Filer (5’10 SG) having to sit this game out.  Filling in for Piselli and Filer were SRs Pat Binder and Mike Murnane.  Neumann took an early lead as expected in the first quarter, which was highlighted by six points by N-G C Rick Jackson all off of offensive rebounds, and a nice steal by G D.J. Rivera who took it the length of the court for a nice reverse dunk late in the quarter.  In the second quarter however it seemed as though two Wood guards who usually come off the bench took control of the game.   Murnane and JR PG Jim Malatesta were all over the place in the second quarter as they combined for 11 points 4 assists 4 boards and a couple of steals to bring Wood back into the game trailing only 33-31 at the half.  The second quarter was also the time that the play of the game came on.  Late in the quarter Jackson pulled down a rebound after a Rob Pearson (6’9 C) miss, only to have it ripped out of his hands by a smaller Murnane who then kicked it out to Malatesta.  Malatesta then took one dribble to the opposite direction and made a great no-look pass to an open Pearson on the block.   Pearson then gave the ball up (which didn’t seem like a good decision until everyone else saw what Rob saw…a wide open Murnane in the corner) to Murnane who knocked down the three.  At the start of the second half Murnane kept getting better, hitting another three grabbing another couple of boards (including one on a long bounce that Murnane put through Conor Kennedy’s legs) dished out another couple of nice assists and came away with another steal.  This quarter he was helped out by PG Matt “Moose” Spadafora who dropped 8 in the quarter.  Earl Pettis dropped 5 in the quarter to keep N-G down one.  The fourth quarter seemed like a completely different game though.  Wood coach Joe Sette made the worst decision in sitting down Murnane at the beginning of the quarter (actually it might have been the end of the third) when he was red hot.  Super Soph. Antonio “Scoop” Jardine completely took over the game in the fourth as he scored 10 of his 13 in the final quarter.  Burton also chipped in with 6 in the quarter.  Wood made it respectable with a pair of late threes and some FTs.
Report Card
Wood
Matt Spadafora  B- 13 points 6 boards and 3 assists sounds good but he needed to do more despite lack of touches in the 4th      Mike Murnane  A+   11points 5 boards 5 assists and 4 steals “Mearns” had his biggest game to date.

Allen Borovich  B+  9 points 4 assists and 7 boards. Allen was quiet but didn’t make any mistakes.

Jim Malatesta  A-  Malatesta had all 6 points in the 2Q but finished with 3 steals and 7 assists and was a big help with Filer and Piselli out.

Rob Pearson  C+  Rob played pretty good offensively with 8 points and a couple nice passes but was nowhere to be found on the boards with only 3.
N-G
"Scoop” Jardine  A 13 points is ok but had 10 in the 4Q and ended the game also had 6 assists

DJ Rivera  B+  played good with 13 points 2 assists and a steal but was pretty quiet after his reverse dunk
David Burton A- played great leading all scorers with 19 points and 5 boards…could have complained a little less after fouling though
Earl Pettis  B  just another good player on a good team scoring 11 points 2 steals with 2 boards and a block.
Rick Jackson  B+  scored 6 of his 8 in the 1Q all off of offensive boards finished with 10 boards (4 OFF) and a block.
