AA DIVISION
FINAL
(No Semifinals)
At Northeast
West Catholic 47, McDevitt 8: Jaleel Reed ran for three
scores and hit Bruce Mapp for a fourth as the Burrs captured a sixth consecutive
CL title (two Blue, four AA) in a rare Sunday contest. David Williams (17-134)
added two rushing TDs and Kevin Malone had the same number of interceptions. The
Lancers avoided a shutout on Gerald Fuller’s 3-yard run with 6.2 seconds
remaining, then QB Christian Connor added the conversion.
AAA DIVISION
SEMIFINALS
At Widener Univ.
Bonner 20, O’Hara 14: Jim Haley passed 8-for-18 for 188 yards and
one score apiece to Paul Pfeffinger and John McGilligan (12-yarder with 5:27
left) as the Friars completed a season sweep over their Delco rivals, who had
victimized them 10 straight times through 2010. Eric Womack and Ronnie Scull
added interceptions. O’Hara’s Dashawn Darden passed 9-for-20 for 188 yards and a
TD to Jay Watkins (also a rushing score) and came oh-so-close to completing an
8-yard TD flip on the game’s final play.
At Tennent
Wood 55, Carroll 6: Joey Monaghan passed 7-for-9 for 99 yards and
four TDs; two went to Kyle Adkins. Desmon Peoples tallied one TD apiece on a run
and reception. The Patriots avoided a shutout on a late, 40-yard pass from Grant
McClernon to Ricky Wilson. This was McClernon's first QB appearance. He'd spent
the season as a backup WR.
FINAL
At Plymouth-Whitemarsh
Wood 42, Bonner 14: The Peoples cousins, Desmon and Brandon,
each surpassed 100 rushing yards as the Vikings stormed to an easy win. Desmon
led in TDs, 2-1, but Brandon topped him in yardage, 134-107, and picked off a
pass as well. Joey Monaghan ran for one score and hit Kyle Adkins for another.
Bonner’s Jim Haley managed 117 yards of rushing/passing (TD to Paul Pfeffinger)
along with an interception.
AAAA DIVISION
SEMIFINALS
At Northeast
La Salle 26, Judge 16: Tim Wade ran 39 times for a
school-record 298 yards and one TD while Ryan Winslow nailed a pair of field
goals. Wade’s yardage total was 18 yards shy of the city postseason record.
Judge hit the scoreboard first thanks to a 72-yard run by Raul Quinones
(13-139).
At Tennent
Roman 45, SJ Prep 17: Starting with Tyrone Brown’s tackle for
a safety, the Cahillites stormed to 38 consecutive points over the final 25
minutes. Chris Johnson-Cruz, filling in for injured starter Michael Keir, passed
8-for-14 for 230 yards and five TDs, most in city postseason history, with three
going to Taishan Tucker (4-116) and two to William Fuller (3-69). Johnson-Cruz, who’d
thrown only one pass all season, also ran 62 yards for a score. Tucker and
Marcus Kelly (26-135 rushing) had interceptions. The Prep’s Skyler Mornhinweg
passed 14-for-33 for 258 yards, primarily to Jim Hurley (8-115) and Eric Medes
(3-111, TD).
FINAL
At Northeast
La Salle 16, Roman 6: Though always known for offense, the
Explorers mostly used an opportunistic defense to capture their fourth
consecutive big-school crown (and fifth in coach Drew Gordon’s six years). Chris
Rocco and frosh Jimmy Herron made interceptions while David Losier, Dad Poquie,
Sean Burke and Andrew Eidenshink pounced on fumbles. Sean Burke (11) and John
Palermo (10) led in tackles. Sean Coleman scored the TDs on passes of 61 and 27
yards from Matt Magarity and Ryan Winslow hit a 25-yard field goal to extend a
13-6 lead. Winslow also averaged 48 yards on four punts, with a long of 57.
Roman scored on a pass from Chris Johnson-Cruz to William Fuller. One week
earlier, as a fill-in for the injured Michael Keir, Johnson-Cruz had set a city
playoff record for TD passes (five) in a semifinal win over St. Joseph’s Prep.
He’d also run 62 yards for another score.
CITY TITLES
CLASS AA
At Southern
West Catholic 30, Bok 23: The Burrs needed a late TD to survive despite
412-108 dominance in scrimmage yardage. A 50-yard pass from Jaleel Reed to
Shaquille James provided major life for the final drive and Reed scored from the
1 with 1:31 left, erasing a 23-22 deficit. Reed suffered a second-quarter injury
and during his absence Kevin Malone threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Bruce Mapp.
David Williams carried 42 times for 228 yards and two TDs. For Bok, Shaquil
Sammons rushed 27 times for 77 yards and one score and added another on a
92-yard kickoff return.
CLASS AAA
At Northeast
Wood 49, Dobbins 0: Star rushers Desmon
and Brandon Peoples combined for just one carry as the Vikings went to the air
again and again while scoring 42 points in the first 19 minutes. Joey Monaghan
finished 12-for-14 for 199 yards and four TDs, two to Kyle Adkins and one apiece
to Nate Smith (also a punt-return score) and Colin Thompson (3-67). After TD No.
4, junior Nick Visco claimed the city record with his 171st career PAT. As the
game wound down, Thompson poured ice cubes on John Shulby, a best buddy with
Down syndrome and a three-year honorary captain. Dobbins’ best moment was Kareem
Jefferson’s fumble recovery, at the 1, right before halftime.
CLASS AAAA
At Northeast
La Salle 41, Washington 7: Five days before
Thanksgiving, the Explorers must have thought it was Christmas en route to
capturing their third consecutive AAAA City Title. After taking an early lead on
the first of three successive rushing TDs by Tim Wade (12-79), Ryan Winslow
lofted a kickoff about 35 yards downfield and Washington’s nearest return man
merely watched. The ball bounced, Dad Poquie pounced and Wade made it 14-0 five
plays later. Matt Magarity ran for one TD (65 yards) and hit Sean Coleman for
another while frosh Jordan Meachum, Wade’s backup, sped for 101 yards and one
score on 12 carries. Washington tallied on David Gavrilov’s 58-yard pass to
Donald Smith. Hakeem Sillman, the city’s leading rusher, was held to 18 yards on
eight carries.
