City Title

At Kennedy Stadium
Frankford 27, Wood 7
In a driving rainstorm, which turned the natural surface at
Kennedy Stadium into a mud-covered mess, Frankford relied almost
exclusively on the straight-ahead running of fullback Joe Galasso, who
responded with 155 yards and two TDs on 30 carries. The Pioneers were
just the PL's third winner since 1951. Coach Al Angelo had been 0-8-1 in
city title appearances as a player, assistant and head coach. Chris
Yurkow ran for one TD and completed his only pass for another. Walt
Parrish made four tackles for losses and recovered an errant pitchout.
For Wood, John Kafel returned the second half kickoff 80 yards for a TD.

Public League

Semifinals
Doubleheader at Northeast
Lincoln 14, Bartram 12
Bruce Carthon blocked Dan Gallagher's 32-yard field goal attempt on the
final play to preserve the win. Zachary Armwood rushed 37 times for 146 yards.
Randy Kuptsow passed five yards to Corey McElveen for a TD with 0:25 left.
Frankford 23, Roxborough 0

Chris Yurkow ran for one TD and passed for one each to Joe Galasso and
Ken Richardson.
Final
At Northeast
Frankford 7, Lincoln 6
    Chris Yurkow scored Frankford's TD on a 56-yard, first-quarter
interception return and made another interception on Frankford's 5 on
the final play of the game. He also recovered a fumble, forced by Mike
Seonia, to end Lincoln's next-to-last series. Tony Verrillo kicked the
decisive PAT. For Lincoln, Zachary Armwood rushed 29 times for 106 yards
and a TD and Wendell Birch passed 8-for-15 for 102 yards, with Corey
McElveen making two catches for 70 yards.

Catholic League

Semifinals
Doubleheader at Veterans Stadium
Wood 19, Dougherty 13
Dougherty had the ball on Wood's 3 with 0:27 left. But as QB
Andy Baratta pulled away from center, Steve Toborowski broke through to
force a fumble and teammate Bill Marsh recovered.
O'Hara 9, West 6
O'Hara scored its points within a 58-second span in the third
quarter -- Bill Mitchell's 26-yard field goal and Neil Doogan's 14-yard
run with an airborne fumble.
Final
At Northeast
Wood 7, O'Hara 6
Wood posted a 35-yard TD run by Bill Black (22-101) on its first
series, then held on. With 6:44 remaining, Bob Rafferty ran 4 yards for
a TD and kicker Bill Mitchell ran onto the field though O'Hara was
trailing the total offense battle by 50 yards and that would have been
the determining factor had the game ended in a tie. After much
discussion, O'Hara went for two and Brian McCartney intercepted.
