Quarterfinals
Frankford 34, Bok 20
Wearing the No. 24 made famous by Frankford all-timer Eddie Gaskins,
a family friend, Gil McCloud ran 15 times for a season-high 125 yards. He
also had a 24-yard gain to the 1 to set up a fourth score. The Pioneers had
344 yards from scrimmage and 150 more on returns; the highlight was Taron
Freeman's 90-yard punt return for a score. For Bok, Kareem Jeffreys passed
10-for-20 for 197 yards and one TD apiece to Ed Brumskill (7-113) and
Ramon Mills (2-70).
Washington 32, Bartram 14
Ryan Gore (12-81) and Terrance Young (8-46) ran for two TDs apiece.
Ivan Kosty's one completion in two attempts went to Kyle Bell for a 15-yard
TD. For Bartram, Antoine King ran 16 times for 63 yards and and a TD while
Phillip Evans passed 5-for-15 for 67 yards and a score to Michael Gibson.
Franklin 18, Central 8
The Electrons won a playoff game for the first time in school history, not
counting a post-strike tournament in 1981, as Jermaine "Beanie" Smith (19-107,
two TDs) and Maurice Samuels (16-105) both hit the 100-yard mark. Boe Davis
had two sacks among five tackles as Central was limited to 99 yards total
offense. Central's Everett Lee ran 15 times for 72 yards.
Dobbins 12, Mastbaum 0
Michael Baldwin ran for one TD, passed to Kevin Hinton for another and
made nine tackles. For Mastbaum, Chris DeShields ran for 124 yards and made
10 tackles.
Semifinals
Doubleheader at Northeast
Frankford 29, Franklin 0
After Marquette Williams started the scoring with a 28-yard fumble return,
Marcus Waddy (8-95) and Gil McCloud (5-68) added TD runs of 68 and 45
yards, respectively. Michael Dolbow had eight tackles. For Franklin, Jermaine
"Beanie" Smith gained 91 yards on 17 carries and was tackled on the 1 as the
game ended.
Washington 31, Dobbins 14
Kyle Bell, a nephew of ex-Cowboy star Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, a
newly minted multimillionaire thanks to the Texas State Lottery, had two
interceptions and scored a TD on a pass from Ivan Kosty (4-for-5, 97). Terrance
Young rushed 22 times for 109 yards and two scores and added a third on an
interception return. The Dobbins highlight was an 80-yard TD pass from
Michael Baldwin to David Coleman.
Final
At Northeast
Washington 10, Frankford 0
Kyle Bell's interception set up the game's lone TD, Ryan Gore's
2-yard run, and Roger Price kicked his 11th field goal of the season, a

26-yarder. The title was the sixth for Washington in 12 years and the fifth
to come by shutout. Maurice Bennett had 12 tackles. Frankford, also
blanked by the Eagles during the regular season, won the total offense
battle, 219-80, but lost a fumble on the 8 with 1:08 left.

First Round
La Salle 28, Ryan 7
Ryan Parfitt, a 5-9, 170-pound senior, carried 18 times for 117 yards and
two TDs while becoming the first 1,000-yard rusher (1,005) in school history.
He also caught a scoring pass from Gabe Marabella (4-for-8, 89, two TDs).
Pete Varanavage (27-147) and Keith Roemhild (17-84, TD) ran well for Ryan,
which outgained La Salle from scrimmage, 346-266.
Bonner 21, Roman 7
Bonner coasted after Roman franchise Joe McCourt suffered a concussion
in the second quarter. Jason Smith rushed 28 times for 132 yards and two TDs
and Bill Murrin (7-110) helped John Port pass 10-for-28 for 138 yards. McCourt
gained 88 yards on 13 carries and raised his career total to 3,107, topping 1980
grad John Cason (3,019) for the school record. Lineman David Pringle made
14 tackles.
Semifinals
At Northeast
SJ Prep 27, Bonner 13
Bonner, a 45-0 loser to Prep during the regular season, was still very much
alive early in the fourth quarter -- with the score at 13-13. Kyle Ambrogi's second
rushing TD broke the tie. Jim Lachman produced 91 yards on four catches, all in
scoring drives. For Bonner, John Port passed 10-for-25 for 115 yards and scored
once.
At Norristown
O'Hara 23, La Salle 21
In an all-timer and then some, the teams combined for 18 points in the last 1:48
and O'Hara's Frank Vinci won it by kicking a 26-yard field goal with 0:06 left.
For O'Hara, Mike Lomas passed 13-for-21 for 198 yards and a TD apiece to
Ryan Barksdale (3-73) and Harry Dougherty (5-61), and Kevin Jones carried 30
times for 137 yards. For La Salle, Gabe Marabella passed 5-for-14 for 109 yards
and ran for two TDs, including a 1-yard keeper with 0:51 left. Tom McCaffery's
PAT made it 21-20.
Final
At Northeast
O'Hara 35, SJ Prep 10
Capping a sensational career, Kevin Jones posted four TDs and
196 all-purpose yards as the Lions rolled to an upset victory. He ran
for scores of 2 and 39 yards, returned a kickoff 86 yards for another and
made a 34-yard reception of a Mike Lomas Hail Mary pass for yet another.
Lomas (6-for-12, 137 yards) also fired a TD pass to Ryan Barksdale.
Prep entered at 12-0 and thus became the first team with a perfect record
to fall in a CL title game since St. James in 1969. Kyle Ambrogi rushed for
50 yards and fell nine yards short of overtaking Judge's Bill Foley (2,116
in '68) for the No. 1 spot in CL one-season rushing. Mike McGann passed
18-for-37 for a game record 245 yards.
Blue Division
First Round
Wood 37, Dougherty 14
Bill Hartley powered for 188 yards and four TDs on 32 carries -- tying the CL mark
for most TDs in a playoff game. For Dougherty, Sean McGovern passed 17-for-36
for 140 yards, mostly to Mickey King (8-62) and Leonard Hodges (6-66). King, also
the punter, added 100 yards on four returns and nine tackles. In the regular season,
King had made four TD catches in an OT win over Wood, tying the city-leagues
record for a game and raising his season total to a record 15.
Neumann 28, West 7
Pasquale "Pat" Narducci carried 21 times for 113 yards and a TD while Howard
Bell turned five carries into two scores. Ed Jeffery was part of three sacks. For West,
halfback Abdul Sesay, not to be confused with fullback Abdulai Sesay (no relation),
ran 14 times for 113 yards and a 79-yard TD. West was missing several starters due
to academic ineligibility.
Semifinals
At Norristown
Carroll 49, Neumann 0
In the biggest postseason blowout in Catholic League history, Maurice Stovall got
things rolling with an 85-yard kickoff return. Charlie Hurley and Mike Larkin ran for two
scores apiece while Derek Zambino scored once on a sneak and again on a 42-yard
return of a blocked punt. With seven PAT, Marty Higgins claimed the city-leagues
record for kicking points in a season (81).
At Northeast
McDevitt 28, Wood 21
Don Watkins (13-112) and Silas Moore (14-73) ran for one TD each while Dave
Melcher passed for a score and had a key interception, as did P.J. Chipman. Wood's
John Spinosa accounted for 243 yards total offense and three TDs -- rushing 18 times
for 65 yards and one and passing 11-for-22 for 178 and two.
Final
At Northeast
Carroll 42, McDevitt 10

The Patriots spotted McDevitt a 10-0 lead, then stormed to victory while
raising their season scoring advantage to an amazing 584-42 (45-3 average
rounded off score). Brian Mattaway scored twice -- run, interception -- while
Maurice Stovall (pass from Derek Zambino), Mike Larkin, Charlie Hurley (runs)
and Jeff Kobilka scored once apiece. Marty Higgins kicked six PAT to pad
his city-leagues records for season (73) and career (118). In all, he finished
with five marks. Pat Kelly made 10 tackles and Jeff Vanak raised his career
sack total to 50.5. For McDevitt, Dave Melcher (60-yard run) became only the
third CL player to score a TD vs. Carroll, joining West's Abdul Sesay and
Neumann's Owen McGuire. Sean Hughes added a field goal.

Season's Recap
Malvern (4-0)
As always, the Friars finished league play a week before everyone
else and, as often, captured the crown. They went to 4-0 with a 20-19
win over Penn Charter. Throwing his first varsity passes due to Bill
Corbett's broken wrist, Matt Skellan went 9-for-18 for 167 yards and
a TD, and he was especially effective in the second half (6-for-7, 146)
as the Friars rallied from a 19-10 deficit. The victory margin came with
38.2 remaining when Brendan Carney, out of Skellan's hold (he was
new at that job, too), hammered a 30-yard field goal. GA, Haverford
and PC tied for second at 2-2.
