Quarterfinals
Frankford 47, Mastbaum 0
The Pioneers frolicked while scoring in every quarter. Fullback Joselito
Cruz ran seven times for 54 yards and two TDs and his blocking helped
the offense generate 340 total yards. On defense, two of Cruz' six tackles
went for losses. Mikal Jones ran 10 times for 168 yards and a TD while
frosh Brandon Norris scored one TD apiece on a rush and reception.
Ervin Hook capped the scoring with the longest fumble return (83 yards)
in city postseason history.
Washington 22, Franklin 0
Larry Turner led the Eagles in rushing (8-77, TD) and Brandon Peaker
involved himself in nine tackles (sack, another for a loss). Franklin's Jestin
Brisbon ran 17 times for 131 yards.
Gratz 30, Bartram 0
Tyree Watson made the Bulldogs' first postseason appearance since 1955
extra special, rushing just 16 times for three TDs and the most yards (282)
in city postseason history. Watson's TDs covered 64, 43 and 90 yards. One
week earlier, he'd rushed for 321 yards and five TDs in a playoff-clinching
win over Central. Watson added an interception while Voncel Harrigan made
11 tackles and booted a 31-yard field goal.
Central 23, Bok 14
The Lancers prevailed on the strength of a 9-0 fourth quarter. Quindel
"Milky" Ladson ran 17 times for 102 yards and a TD and the 14-14 tie was
broken on Marcel Quarterman's 45-yard pass to Eric Heisler. Bok's Cedric
Green dashed 72 yards for a score.
Semifinals
Doubleheader at Northeast
Frankford 53, Central 6
Mikal Jones (three TDs) and Joselito Cruz rushed for 103 yards apiece and
Cruz scored for the defense on a 58-yard fumble return. Darrell "D.J." Turner
ran for one score and passed 50 yards to Adam Hartman for another. The
Pioneers posted 437 yards total offense, even though coach Tom Mullineaux
substituted liberally after halftime (41-6). Central's only joy came on Marcel
Quarterman's 73-yard scoring pass to Chris Williams.
Washington 29, Gratz 0
Sean Kelly, a 5-4, 195-pound nose guard, posted a sack among six tackles
as Washington earned its fourth shutout in five games and fifth of the season.
The first TD came when Marcus Banks blocked a punt and Jameel McClain
recovered in the end zone. Pete Sourovelis' recovery set up another score.
Larry Turner ran for two TDs. Gratz' Tyree Watson collected 63 yards on
18 rushes.
Final
At Northeast
Frankford 14, Washington 6
The game was postponed twice and was finally played Dec. 14
in mud and off-and-on drizzle. On the game's second series, Frankford
jumped to a 6-0 lead as freshman Brandon Norris (21-119) zoomed 48
yards. The Pioneers punted to end their next series and when the ball
bounced off the return man, Michael Washington recovered at the 25.
Darrell "D.J." Turner's TD toss to Adam Hartman followed. Washington
answered three plays later on Larry Turner's 26-yard TD. In the fourth
quarter, Washington saw drives end at Frankford's 28, 15 and 32. On the
game's final play, Sharif Nash and Hartman were present to make sure the
pass would fall incomplete.

First Round
Roman 42, Ryan 20
Johnny Ortiz (13-212) and Andy Amaro (14-123) ran for two TDs each as the Cahillites
exploded for 493 yards total offense (470 rushing). Ryan's Joe DeLeo ran for one score
and passed for another.
O'Hara 31, Bonner 8
Craig Haywood posted a 64-yard TD run on a keeper en route to decent numbers
(9-124) while Anthony Heygood added 60 yards and two scores on 15 rushes.
Semifinals
At Plymouth-Whitemarsh
Roman 9, La Salle 6
John "Byrd" Pendergast, best known for wearing a multicolored wig and leading a
brigade of wacky student fans at Roman's basketball games, nailed a 29-yard field goal
with 12.5 seconds left to win it. Andre Sloan-El completed two passes worth 40 yards total
to Derek Dopkin on the decisive drive. La Salle was held to 47 yards total offense; Jeff
Grimmie and basketball franchise Charron Fisher had two sacks apiece.
At Plymouth-Whitemarsh
SJ Prep 38, O'Hara 13
Pat Kaiser rushed 22 times for 72 yards and three TDs, giving him the city record
with 30, while Matt Stefanski passed 12-for-16 for 244 yards and a score to Steve
Quinn (6-124). The Hawks won the second half, 21-0. Anthony Heygood ran for
O'Hara's TDs.
Final
At Northeast
SJ Prep 38, Roman 7
For the first time in decades, the title games in both divisions were
played before Thanksgiving. In this one, the first scrimmage play
yielded a 59-yard scoring pass from Matt Stefanski to Steve Quinn and
then the night became The Pat Kaiser Show. Shrugging off teasing about a
learning disability from Roman's fans, Kaiser set city playoff records
for rushing yards (316, on 18 carries) and points (32) and tied city
marks for rushing TDs in a playoff (four) and career field goals (25).
Kaiser's field goal was a 32-yarder. After a penalty, he converted one
of his five PAT from 35. Kaiser finished the season with 2,178 rushing
yards and city marks for rushing TDs (35) and total TDs (37).
His 525 career points are No. 1 in CL history and his 306 season points
were briefly the state record. For Roman, Andre Sloan-El was involved in
51 plays and accounted for 331 yards, passing 20-for-35 for 230 and
rushing 16 times for 101.
Blue Division
First Round
Conwell-Egan 13, Kennedy-Kenrick 10 (OT)
Matt Fischer kicked a 20-yard field goal on fourth down to start OT, then Dan Helhowski
barely missed a 26-yarder to conclude K-K's possession. Both teams had long TDs in the
fourth quarter: a 73-yard fumble return by C-E's Dan Quinn and a 71-yard reception by
Dan McCabe (from Ricky McMinn, 7-for-16, 152). C-E's Steve Slaton ran 33 times for
142 yards.
Neumann 14, McDevitt 9
Jimmy Porreca rushed 16 times for 80 yards and a score and Jon Brady passed 6-for-11
for 116 yards. McDevitt achieved first-and-goal at the 9 with 0:56 left, but Ed McDuffie
made two tackles and two passes fell incomplete. McDuffie was part of a gigantic offensive
line -- center Tom McCarron, guard Marques Slocum, McDuffie and fellow tackle Joey
Sandefur weighed 300-plus. Guard Kevin Harrigan was 240. Tight end Al Meacham was 280.
Semifinals
At Northeast
West Catholic 55, Neumann 48
In the highest scoring game ever involving city teams, there were 788 yards from
scrimmage and 264 on returns (1,052 total). The first half, which ended with West ahead,
35-20, produced exactly 600 yards, including returns. The tone was set as West's Chris
Diaferio returned the opening kickoff 67 yards for a TD. Curtis "Boonah" Brinkley posted
240 yards and four TDs on 26 carries. For Neumann, Jimmy Porreca ran 24 times for 159
yards and caught a pass from Jon Brady (15-for-29, 236, three TDs) for a fourth. The win
was assured when West's Dave Fitzgerald recovered an onsides kick at 0:25. The Burrs were
quarterbacked by DB Matt Rodia; the former starter had been dismissed from the team for
school-related reasons.
At Norristown
Carroll 21, Conwell-Egan 14
James Roderick made 11 tackles at down lineman and rushed 15 times for 140 yards and
TDs of 54 and 7 yards. Ryan Stewart won it by returning a punt 40 yards for a score with
1:36 left. C-E failed to score on first-and-goal from the 1 just before halftime.
Final
Blue Division
At Roosevelt Field, Norristown
Carroll 22, West Catholic 7
Carroll won its third consecutive title and lifted its four-year
record against Blue opposition to 34-2. Pat Brochet passed 6-for-6 for
102 yards and went 4-for-4 in a six-play, 87-yard drive that ended 1
minute, 2 seconds before halftime and put the Patriots ahead for good,
at 10-7. The TD came on a 32-yard flip to Chaz Scott. James Roderick
(19-84, two TDs) and Ryan Stewart (9-88) handled much of the rushing
and Ryan McGoldrick opened the scoring with a 31-yard field goal. Mike
Cutone (10), Will Bradley (nine) and Roderick (eight) led in tackles.
Scott and Mitch Yanak had interceptions. The Patriots started the season
at 0-4, and the last of those setbacks was to West, by 28-21. West's
Curtis "Boonah" Brinkley, the all-time city season rushing leader (2,635
to here; he finished with 2,813), carried 24 times for 121 yards and a
TD.

seasons. The other guys were Brandon Shepherdson (344 in '93)
and James Berry (346 in '98). Sean Singletary made two interceptions.
For GA, junior Sean Grieve passed 12-for-24 for 145 yards and two TDs
to become the I-A's season passing leader at 1,821. Malvern was second
