Public League

Quarterfinals
At Higher Seed's Home Field
Washington 34, Lincoln 6

The Railsplitters, who wound up winning Blue due to forfeits by West Philadelphia
(ineligible players; attending a private school), caused a stir by scoring first on a pass
from Charles Boyd to Calvin Philemond. But the Eagles had little trouble regrouping
(Lorenzo Adams returned the kickoff 85 yards for a TD), then coasting. James
Johnson ran turned six carries into 47 yards and two TDs. For Lincoln, Kevin Chilton
rushed 27 times for 115 yards and Rubens Codio hustled for three interceptions.
Overbrook 20, Dobbins 19
Making just their third playoff appearance in the program's 80-year history, the
Panthers posted their first win in dramatic fashion in a night game at Gratz. Markeyse
Carter engineered a four-play, 72-yard drive and scored on a 4-yard keeper, then star
rusher Darius Johnson (21-96, TD) kicked the PAT. The big play was a 68-yard bomb
to Leonard Mitchell. Carter also passed for a score to John Melvin. For Dobbins, Terez
Sydnor passed for one TD and ran for another. The Mustangs were able to claim the
fourth spot in Red with a last-day win over Germantown. Both entered winless in division
play. On the field, that is. Their game became meaningful when Frankford, the two-time
defending PL champ, was ousted from playoff contention due to the presence on its
roster of a player almost 20 years old.
Bok 14, Central 6

With the Southern-Bok complex being converted to a super site, this one was played
at Bartram. Luke Lassiter provided most of the Wildcats' offense, rushing 23 times for
186 yards and a score, while Troy Martin and Daquon Johnson made interceptions.
Central's Kyle Yeiter ran for 51 yards and a TD, and passed for 51 more yards.
Northeast 27, Gratz 0
Malik Stokes collected only 30 yards on 5-for-8 passing, but TDs to Keith Scruggs
and Tyrik Clary were included. Tyleel Robinson, Chad O'Malley and Albert Burgos
posted interceptions and Burgos returned his for a 44-yard TD. Robinson added a rushing
TD. Gratz played without its starting QB and top rusher (injuries).
Semifinals
Doubleheader at Northeast
Washington 21, Overbrook 19
Up to this point, no Eagle had carried more than 12 times or gained more than 100 yards.
But James Johnson exploded for 207 yards and two TDs on 21 totes to salvage what was
something of a lackluster effort. Overbrook jumped to a 6-0 lead with help from an
immediate 54-yard halfback pass from Darius Johnson to John Melvin and moved within
two points with 3:55 showing. With three timeouts left, coach Ken Sturm opted for a
regular kickoff. Washington responded and kept Overbrook's offense off the field until
17.8 remained. There were no late heroics. Markeyse Carter passed 10-for-15 for 150 yards
and Melvin scored twice while ringing up 158 yards of rushing/receiving.
Bok 8, Northeast 0
Two days earlier, Bok was forced to reveal its hand. If you beat Northeast, will you opt to
play for the Pub title? The Wildcats said "yes" and then took care of business. The defense
did the deed, as Daquon Johnson made a tackle for a safety and Kyle Williams returned an
interception 86 yards for a TD. Luke Lassiter ran 21 times for 88 yards. For Northeast,
soph Malik Stokes passed 12-for-22 for 166 yards, primarily to Keith Scruggs (6-69). District
12's spot in the state AAA playoffs went to Franklin.
Final
At Northeast
Washington 34, Bok 6
Bok's hopes of hanging around and causing Washington some consternation were dealt a
blow when James Johnson (7-97) ran 69 yards for a TD on the game's first scrimmage play.
The Eagles maintained control from there as Clinton "Juice" Granger ran for a pair of 1-yard
scores and passed 6-for-9 for 140 yards and a TD to Andrew Goodman (3-122). Bok's Luke
Lassiter ran 25 times for a late TD and 163 yards, the third best title-game performance by
a member of the losing team. He ended his career with 2,979 yards. The title was the ninth in
23 seasons for coach Ron Cohen.

State Playoffs
Class AAA
District 1-12 Subregional Semifinal
At Pottsgrove
Pottsgrove 42, Franklin 12
The Electrons were awarded this berth after Bok, a 30-28 winner, in double OT, during the
team's regular season battle, decided to nix the state playoffs in favor of a chance at the Pub's
final full-scale title. Anthony Stones, in his first QB stint of '07, passed 6-for-12 for 117 yards
and a TD to Jamel "Redz" Haggins. Marquis White ran for the other score.
Class AAAA
State Quarterfinal
At Crum Stadium (Allentown)
Allentown Parkland 44, Washington 12
The Eagles surrendered the first 44 points, but at least rallied for two scores in the waning
moments as the recovery of an onsides kick was sandwiched by TD passes from soph backup
Aaron Wilmer (8-for-10, 103) to his brother, Damien, and Andrew Goodman (final play of game).

Red Division
First Round
At Plymouth-Whitemarsh
O'Hara 31, La Salle 7
Corey Brown rushed 16 times for 114 yards and two scores while Tom Savage, returning
after a month off due to a broken foot, passed 8-for-14 for 62 yards and one TD. The longest
tally went to Steve Werner on a 75-yard run. For La Salle, which earlier in the season lost big
receivers Joe Migliarese and Ryan Warrender, John Harrison and Drew Loughery combined
to pass 21-for-33 for 198 yards and the TD, on a rush, went to Mike Donohoe.
At Northeast
Roman 28, N. Catholic 10
With the former record-holder, Joe McCourt, calling the plays as the offensive coordinator,
Balial Lewis Sloan-El carried 23 times for 156 and yards and two TDs to raise his season's
yardage total to 1,796. McCourt's school record (1,780) had been set in 2000. Nick Moody also
scored twice, with the more impressive TD coming on a 72-yard pass from Chris Johnson.
Terrell Oglesby (24-64) ran for North's TD.
Semifinals
At Plymouth-Whitemarsh
SJ Prep 35, O'Hara 0
The Hawks frolicked against a team that had provided stiff competition (16-7 score) during the
regular season, thus advancing to the final for the eighth straight year. Aaron Haas (four TD
passes; 8-for-10, 137) and Greg Castillo, son of Eagles' assistant Juan (three TD catches; 5-110),
tied postseason city game records. Haas completed the Hawks' scoring with a 9-yard run on their
first possession of the third quarter. Linemen Ryan McGinn and Joe Ventresca sparked the
defense. The Prep's average score in these eight semis victories was 35-8. For O'Hara, Mark
Wedderburn made three catches for 59 yards.
At Northeast
Roman 35, Judge 10

Not only did the Cahillites rally from a 10-0 deficit, they slapped 28 third quarter points on the
board; Al Desiderio began the avalanche with a 77-yard kickoff return for a score. Balial Lewis
Sloan-El finished the evening with 20 carries for 172 yards and two TDs, Chris Johnson's only
completion went to Nick Moody for a 36-yard score and the tackling leaders were Marty Bernard
(11) and Andrew Regan (nine). Tailback Andrew McHale (25-89), the coaches' division MVP,
capped the game's first drive with an 11-yard TD on a pass from Paul Volpe.
Final
At Northeast
Roman 10, SJ Prep 9
Though the teams' regular season meeting had produced a 36-7 defeat, Roman received an early
confidence boost when 320-pound Jewhan Edwards rumbled straight up the middle to block a punt
and Andrew Regan recovered the ball for a TD. Roman's Chris Fioravanti (39 yards) and Prep's
Tim Edger (45 yards, two short of the city's postseason record) blasted field goals. With 28.5 left,
Jim McGoldrick uncorked a stirring, 77-yard punt return for a TD, but Edger's PAT hit the left
upright and Regan recovered the onsides kick. Roman's Balial Lewis Sloan-El ran 29 times for 118
yards, raising his season's total to 2,141. This was the fourth time in eight seasons that Prep,
unbeaten in division play, suffered a title-game upset.

Blue Division
First Round
At Northeast
Carroll 30, Neumann-Goretti 22
The Patriots rolled to a 30-8 halftime lead, then held on. N-G, which received three rushing TDs
from Hakeem "Skiz" Johnson (26-100), advanced to Carroll's 32 on its final possession before
three straight incompletions terminated hopes of a miracle. Kevin Eckel scored twice for Carroll
on a 1-yard run and an 85-yard kickoff return. QB Luke Wischnowski (21-95) did likewise; he
also passed 3-for-6 for 83 yards.
At Plymouth-Whitemarsh
McDevitt 34, Kennedy-Kenrick 0

Alternating tailbacks Jason Golderer (18-125, two) and Justin Schley (21-117) combined for three
TDs, Luke Sawick hit Steve Harris for a 35-yard score and Greg Williams tallied for the defense
by recovering a dropped snap on a punt. Drew Siegfried and Naythan Venit added interceptions
w
hile Matt Shervin, who also won varsity letters during the fall for soccer and golf, hit four PATs.
Semifinals
At Northeast
W. Catholic 48, McDevitt 14
Raymond Maples opened and closed the scoring with two l-o-n-g TDs (run for 87,
interception for 90) and added two other scores on rushes as the Burrs advanced to the final
for the sixth consecutive year. West rang up 488 yards of total offense behind the running of
Maples, Rob Holloman (12-97, TD) and Curtis Drake (9-98, TD) and Drake's 133-yard,
one-score passing (a 72-yarder to Christian Palmer.) McDevitt's Jason Golderer hustled for
232 all-purpose yards -- 77 on 18 carries, 155 yards (including a 79-yard score with a kickoff)
on six returns. He also recovered a fumble and made 10 tackles. Luke Sawick passed 12-for-30
for 188 yards while Steve Harris made six catches for 91. The teams combined for 1,030
all-purpose yards.
At Plymouth-Whitemarsh
Wood 41, Carroll 17
Senior Bob DeLucas and junior Sean Cunningham, bookends at halfback and inside linebacker,
did yeoman duty as the Vikings earned a fifth straight title-game bout with West. DeLucas
carried 11 times for 85 yards and three scores while adding 11 tackles. Cunningham's numbers:
14-166-2-9. For Carroll, which committed six turnovers and never touched an onsides kick that
was recovered by Wood, Luke Wischnowski ran 11 times for 85 yards and a score and passed
5-for-7 for 90 yards and another TD.
Final
At Northeast
W. Catholic 28, Wood 7

As they'd been all season, alternating junior tailbacks Rob Holloman (17-107) and Raymond
Maples (16-81, two TDs) were a two-headed rushing monster as the Burrs won a second
consecutive title for the first time since claiming four straight starting in 1943. Those performances
allowed each to surpass 1,000 yards for the season -- Holloman (1,048), Maples (1,040). QB
Curtis Drake, like those two a junior, ran for two scores while raising his season's rushing/passing
yardage total to 1,922. Maples, Haleem "P-Nut" Hayward, Rodney Blango and Jordan Culbreath
had interceptions. Wood suffered an early blow when RB-LB Bob DeLucas, the coaches' division
MVP, departed with an ankle injury. Sean Cunningham ran for the Vikings' score.

Inter-Ac League

Season's Recap
Malvern (5-0-0)

The title was decided in a last-day showdown between teams with a combined
record of 17-0 as Chestnut Hill traveled to Malvern. The latter triumphed, 26-18,
as Neil Willis rushed 23 times for 98 yards and a score and added a TD reception
from Syracuse-bound Ryan Nassib (7-for-13, 119; also a TD run). Willis' role had
expanded at mid-season after star HB Chris Layne was lost to injuries suffered in
a major car accident. For CHA, Mike Mattei passed 12-for-25 for 250 yards and
a TD to Mike Lonergan while soph Jon McAllister turned six catches into 140
yards. Rashad Campbell, slowed by a tender Achilles, settled for 39 yards on 11
carries. He finished the two-season Inter-Ac portion of his career with exactly
3,200 yards and 45 rushing TDs (overall: 4,204 and 60). Malvern's dreams of a
10-0 season were squashed on Thanksgiving by St. Joseph's Prep, 33-6.
