Northeast 9, Bok 8
In a circumstances-for-the-ages finish, Northeast reversed an 8-7 deficit with 0:08 left when Dante Poole blocked Ralph Sheridan's punt through the back of the end zone for a safety. Bok had only 10 players on the field on the fateful play -- the missing man was one of Sheridan's three personal protectors. With 1:02 left, Northeast coach Harvey "Brew" Schumer opted not to attempt a chip-shot field goal and Tavis Green (17-110) was dumped for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-1 from the 4. Poole scored Northeast's TD on a 10-yard run. For Bok, Will Gadson passed 10-for-18 for 121 yards, leaped into the end zone for a 2-yard TD midway through the fourth quarter and then flipped a conversion pass to Ed Brumskill. Gadson played more than half the game with a broken leg and needed three stitches to repair a gash in his chin. Bok, the smallest PL school with football (400 male enrollment), was trying to make the final for the first time since 1951.

Bok 30, Frankford 22 (OT)

(Bok beat Frankford for the 1950 PL title on total yardage after the game ended in a scoreless tie.) Mills's third score, a 2-yarder on a perfectly lobbed pass from Kareem Jeffreys, began the OT session. Frankford then earned third-and-goal at the 2, but Ed Brumskill dropped Theodore McNeil (26-125) for a 1-yard loss on his 11th tackle and Trumell Goodman and Rodney McCarter combined to dump James Allen (19-70) for a game-ending, 7-yard loss. Brumskill also made a TD-preventing tackle at the 1 in the first quarter, caught two conversion passes and recovered a fumble to set up a TD.

Reynolds and PAT from David Pough. Sydnor immediately hit Nate Gravely with a 10-yard scoring pass and fullback Greg Myers (14 tackles) ran for two on an option to end it. Sydnor was intending to pull the ball from Myers' belly. Myers wouldn't let that happen.

A shutout was avoided on Sylvester Broxton's late 17-yard pass to James Morgan.
Northeast 17, Central 14 (OT)
The Thanksgiving rivals put on a great show before an evening crowd of roughly 3,000. As regulation ended, a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave Central a second chance at a game-winning field goal. Jeff "Milky" Jones blocked the attempt. Central went first in OT and lost a fumble. Chris Mountney then hammered a 22-yard field goal. Northeast's Jeremiah Pitt ran 20 times for 167 yards and a TD and Kyle Sample had an interception. For Central, which won the yardage battle, 341-264, Joe Marshall passed for 93 yards and ran for 65 and a TD.
Dobbins 32, Bartram 13
Dobbins suffered an early shock when wideout Cedric Graham (arm) and tight end Michael Harris (elbow) broke bones on successive plays. Washington 48, Frankford 12
Washington's Jadrien "J.J." Reynolds, who suffered a spinal-cord injury in a preseason scrimmage, came out to support his teammates and the emotions were flowing. The Eagles' stars were two of Reynold's best friends and fellow Frankford residents, rusher Jerry Butler (17-182, three TDs) and QB-safety Chuck Hughes (two TD runs, scoring pass to Jelani Washington, interception). The 36-point victory margin matched the one posted by Washington over Frankford in the regular season; it's the

Doubleheader at Germantown
Frankford 16, Overbrook 14
Ultimately, the difference-maker was Chris Britton's tackle for a safety, which provided a 9-6 lead. Frankford received two rushing TDs from Calvin Spires (17-131). Overbrook, the eighth seed and making just its second postseason appearance, countered with two TD passes from Sylvester "Lefty" Broxton (9-for-20, 112) to running back Richard Cooper (14-112). 'Brook advanced to Frankford's 22 on a late possession only to be pushed backward by three procedure penalties mixed in with a 10-yard sack.
Washington 21, Central 14

The Eagles rolled to a 21-0 lead on rushing TDs by Fateen Brown (21-66) and Akeem Smith (10-83) and a pass from Thomas Wilmer (6-for-9, 63) to running back Cecil Wise (13-85). Three of Demitrius Wilson's eight tackles went for losses and Wise had an interception. Frankford 13, Germantown 12
The Pioneers appeared headed for an easy victory after their first two series produced rushing TDs for quarterback Ryan Hardy and Calvin Spires (14-71). But they later lost three fumbles and G-town drew within a point as backup QB Khalid Purnell posted a 1-yard sneak for a score on the second play of the fourth quarter. The Bears had kicked just one PAT all season. They went for two and Alonzo Williams barely deflected Purnell's pass to Erik Frazier.
Northeast 21, Washington 6
Charles McGinn, unable to play QB most of the season due to a broken thumb, passed 6-for-8 for 78 yards and a 37-yard TD to Derek Butler and set up the game's first score, a four-yard run by Lamone Fox, with a 42-yard interception return that began at the goal line. Jordan Strickland's pressure helped to produce McGinn's pick. Fox (21-63) ran for the clinching score right after Strickland recovered a bad punt snap on the Washington 5. Fateen Brown (12-49) ran for Washigton's score.

Doubleheader at Germantown
Frankford 58, Olney 12
The Trojans were justifiably excited about making their first postseason appearance in the program's 75-year Pub history, but Frankford proved to be far too difficult a nut to crack. Calvin Spires ran 12 times for 139 yards and two TDs before injuring his shoulder while Ervin Goodson, the team's ballboy in '05, scored once apiece on a run and a punt return in addition to hitting four PATs. Mike Reyes scored twice for Olney on returns -- 83 yards with a kickoff, 31 with a fumble.
Northeast 9, Bok 0
Sean Evans scored the TD on a 9-yard fumble return (forced by Darryl Dawson) and made two significant contributions (catch for 23 yards; spectacular sideline snag that was wiped out only because an interference call produced more yardage)on a drive that produced Tim Freiling's clinching 21-yard field goal. Bok lost a fumble on what must have been the 1-inch line and Kennard Martin recovered in the end zone. Luke Lassiter ran 19 times for 98 yards. Because of its participation in the state AAA playoffs, Bok had been unable to go for the Pub title in 2004 and '05. This year, coach Tom DeFelice had decided to bag the quest for a state title if his team had reached the PL final.
At Gratz
Dobbins 28, Central 19
This was the first playoff game on the new artificial surface and Darrell "Butta" Brown made it a memorable occasion, coming within seven yards of five receiving TDs. As it was, he scored three while making six catches for 135 yards on passes from Wesley "Jelly" Brown (10-for-15, 197) -- the squad also included offensive handyman Kevin "Peanut" Brown. The Browns were not related. Darrell added a fourth score on a 79-yard kickoff return as well as a trick-play conversion run for 26 points. He was stopped at the 3 and 4 on other receptions. For Central, option QB John Kennedy ran 21 times for 123 yards and three TDs and soph NG Michael Anhalt, making just his second start, logged two sacks and two other TFLs while adding a blocked PAT.

Though its top two rushers, Calvin Spires (shoulder) and Nate Johnson (ankle), were sidelined, Frankford cruised as Andreas Hudson passed 6-for-11 for 147 yards and three TDs -- two to Ervin Goodson (4-104), the ballboy during the '05 season, and one to Warren Tinsley. Chris Spence returned one of his two interceptions for a 44-yard TD while adding 87 yards on 15 carries. Wesley "Jelly" Brown (6-for-20, 100) passed to Darrell "Butta" Brown (no relation) for the Mustangs' score.
Washington 19, Northeast 10
Brian Carter, QB Clinton "Juice" Granger and Jay Sloh ran for one TD apiece, but the leading ground-gainer, by far, was Fateen Brown (25-158). Granger's one pass fell incomplete. Devon Wallace and Aaron Hampton made interceptions while three of the tackles made by Oliver Wallace, Devon's brother and fellow outside linebacker, went for losses. Lawrence Kent ran for NE's score, Tim Freiling kicked a 41-yard field goal and Sean Evans notched four catches for 37 yards in addition to five solos among nine tackles. Brennan Shapiro totaled 10 stops.

At Higher Seed's Home Field
Washington 34, Lincoln 6

The Railsplitters, who wound up winning Blue due to forfeits by West Philadelphia (ineligible players; attending a private school), caused a stir by scoring first on a pass from Charles Boyd to Calvin Philemond. But the Eagles had little trouble regrouping (Lorenzo Adams returned the kickoff 85 yards for a TD), then coasting. James Johnson ran turned six carries into 47 yards and two TDs. For Lincoln, Kevin Chilton rushed 27 times for 115 yards and Rubens Codio hustled for three interceptions.
Overbrook 20, Dobbins 19
Making just their third playoff appearance in the program's 80-year history, the Panthers posted their first win in dramatic fashion in a night game at Gratz. Markeyse Carter engineered a four-play, 72-yard drive and scored on a 4-yard keeper, then star rusher Darius Johnson (21-96, TD) kicked the PAT. The big play was a 68-yard bomb to Leonard Mitchell. Carter also passed for a score to John Melvin. For Dobbins, Terez Sydnor passed for one TD and ran for another. The Mustangs were able to claim the fourth spot in Red with a last-day win over Germantown. Both entered winless in division play. On the field, that is. Their game became meaningful when Frankford, the two-time defending PL champ, was ousted from playoff contention due to the presence on its roster of a player almost 20 years old.
Bok 14, Central 6

With the Southern-Bok complex being converted to a super site, this one was played at Bartram. Luke Lassiter provided most of the Wildcats' offense, rushing 23 times for 186 yards and a score, while Troy Martin and Daquon Johnson made interceptions. Central's Kyle Yeiter ran for 51 yards and a TD, and passed for 51 more yards.
Northeast 27, Gratz 0
Malik Stokes collected only 30 yards on 5-for-8 passing, but TDs to Keith Scruggs and Tyrik Clary were included. Tyleel Robinson, Chad O'Malley and Albert Burgos posted interceptions and Burgos returned his for a 44-yard TD. Robinson added a rushing TD. Gratz played without its starting QB and top rusher (injuries).

Up to this point, no Eagle had carried more than 12 times or gained more than 100 yards. But James Johnson exploded for 207 yards and two TDs on 21 totes to salvage what was something of a lackluster effort. Overbrook jumped to a 6-0 lead with help from an immediate 54-yard halfback pass from Darius Johnson to John Melvin and moved within two points with 3:55 showing. With three timeouts left, coach Ken Sturm opted for a regular kickoff. Washington responded and kept Overbrook's offense off the field until 17.8 remained. There were no late heroics. Markeyse Carter passed 10-for-15 for 150 yards and Melvin scored twice while ringing up 158 yards of rushing/receiving.
Bok 8, Northeast 0
Two days earlier, Bok was forced to reveal its hand. If you beat Northeast, will you opt to play for the Pub title? The Wildcats said "yes" and then took care of business. The defense did the deed, as Daquon Johnson made a tackle for a safety and Kyle Williams returned an interception 86 yards for a TD. Luke Lassiter ran 21 times for 88 yards. For Northeast, soph Malik Stokes passed 12-for-22 for 166 yards, primarily to Keith Scruggs (6-69). District 12's spot in the state AAA playoffs went to Franklin.
