TEAM STARS & STRIPES TRIUMPH 34-0 OVER MUNICH
COWBOYS JUNIORS IN GLOBAL BOWL GERMANY
High School seniors and coaches from Arizona, Florida,
Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin Win in Bavaria
MUNICH, GERMANY - Saturday, April 16, 2011 - Team Stars & Stripes shut out the Munich Cowboys Juniors to record a 34-0 victory in the Global Germany Bowl in Bavaria on Saturday.
Led by former Arizona state championship-winning head coach Jeff Scurran, the group of 30 high school seniors from seven states led 28-0 at halftime and then added six second half points.
"In the end our speed and experience dominated," said Scurran. "The post-game photos and dinner with both teams was a wonderful chance to share email addresses and stories. I am sure they will return home with special memories and new friends."
The Americans took an early lead through a one-yard touchdown run by Terry Smith (Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, OH) to cap a steady scoring drive after quarterback Jordan Mills (Cienega, AZ) had tossed a 20-yard pass to Joseph Rava (Malvern Prep, PA). Team Stars & Stripes had started with good field position after Khalid Jones (Episcopal Academy, PA) returned the opening kickoff to midfield.
Rava then lined up on defense and immediately came up with an interception, setting up John Hendrick (Sickles, FL), who reeled off a 21-yard dash to the end zone to give Team Stars & Stripes a commanding 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the 60-degree weather with a slight breeze and mostly sunny skies, Team Stars & Stripes increased their lead to 28-0 by halftime. Hendrick added a 54-yard punt return for a touchdown to his earlier rushing score and Dylan Furrier (Salpointe Catholic, AZ) raced 40 yards up the middle for a touchdown. A 15-yard touchdown run by Zachary Bubolz (Cambria-Friesland, WI) put the final points on the board.
"This was the culmination of an amazing week," said Global Football President Patrick Steenberge. "The young men who formed Team Stars & Stripes played hard, smart football in a historic stadium against a well-coached Munich Cowboys squad."
The game capped a week of practices and cultural sightseeing in Rothenburg, Munich and the Bavarian Region. They visited the Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a well-preserved medieval old town; Nightwatchman Tour in Rothenburg; Linderhof and Neuschwanstein Castles; and traveled to Munich via the Romantic Road. Players were selected not only for football ability, but also as all-round student-athletes.
The Munich Cowboys are one of the oldest club teams in Germany having been formed in 1979 and the junior set up has won three national titles, known as the German Junior Bowl (1986, 1987, 1996). Juniors head coach Florian Berrenberg won a World Bowl ring as the defensive backs coach of the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe in 1995 and also coached the Cowboys senior team for two seasons (2004, 2005).
The win was Scurran's second successive success in charge of Team Stars & Stripes having coached in the Global Challenge Bowl in Japan in 2008 and 2009 and last year enjoyed victory in the 2010 Global Bowl France, defeating the Brussels All-Stars 83-0 in Amiens, France.
APRIL 14
We spent the first 3 days of our trip in
Rothenburg Or Der Tauber, a medieval, walled city in the Bavaria region in
southern Germany. We haven't had too much free time because we are doing
double practices on the soccer field at the local school. The school kids
come out, watch, cheer and ask for autographs. All of the Philly players are
doing very well and contributing to the team.
APRIL

It was a grueling 8 hour flight followed by a
3-hour bus ride to arrive at U.S. Army base in Ansbach. The boys, very weary,
put their pads on for the first "short" practice of the trip. Three and a half
hours later, they boarded the bus again to our hotel in Rothenburg.
