THE FIRST TIME . . .
REPORT BY AMAURO AUSTIN
OCT. 13
PUBLIC RED
Frankford 28, Washington 13
Well so much for the suspense. The Pioneers have tricked us all. Sure
they only played 2 Non-League tune-ups which caused them to kind of fly under
the radar early on and sure there's some new personnel, but the more things
change, the more they stay the same and Frankford FB is flying high once again
as they kind of in easy fashion handled the Eagles from GW. The defending champs
did it mostly by controlling the lines which led to controlling the clock which
led to more scoring plays which led to well of course, the W. The Pioneers
out-gained the Eagles 304 to 123 yards (55 to 41 in total plays). It was such a
great overall effort that I don't really know who to start talking about first.
I guess things start with the head so sr. QB Andreas Hudson should be
mentioned first. He was again his poised self as all Pioneer QBs normally are as
he went 7-for-11, 106 yards with 3 TDs. Two TD grabs went to sr. WR J (as
in James) C (as in Charles) Montgomery (listed at 6-5 210). There
isn't a better wide-out in Public League folks. The Gaffney, SC native has taken
the Frankford (which is indeed FB town USA) section of the city by storm already
thought of as an adopted son after moving here back in April. There's no limit
to how far he could go in this sport. He's got great hands (His first TD, a
5-yarder, on a fade route was snagged with one hand in the end zone while taking
a hard pop and still getting one foot in. The second was a 4-yarder off an easy
as pie slant.) He's also got an unbelievable build and top flight athleticism.
It'll be interesting to see how this develops... Then there was the running game
led by sr. backs Calvin Spires (22-95-TD) & Nate Johnson (15-81).
Both guys ran hard and played a very go FB game. Spires (2/21) also caught a TD
from 6-yards out. The defensive leaders were D-I prospect sr. DT Tyree Dudley
(6-4 305) with 2 TFLs (8 yards), feisty jr. LB Chris Spence (7 stops with
a sack and fumble recovery) & so. FS Kalif Walker (7 stops with a TFL and
a pick). The Eagles struggled on both ends and if not for the serious moxie of
sr. SB-CB Brian Carter (10-63 rushing, an INT on D which led to his
7-yard TD run), they would have been totally out of it. There weren't many other
bright spots.
AA's Notes: In the house: ex-Frankford aide
Rasheed Muhammed an all-timer of an assistant coach. Afterwards, he came to
me and said, "That's 3 in a row over these guys..." For GW, it was the debut of
sr. LB Jeff "Milky" Jones (6-2 240). Jones formerly attended Northeast
and had to request a fifth year from the district which was a long, drawn out
process that led to a trip to Mechanicburg, PA (The head PIAA office). He looked
decent out there despite some jitters at his old stomping grounds.
Ted's DN Story About the Title Game . . .
Kids will be kids. But only to a certain extent, if they're relatives who find themselves on opposite sides in a football championship game.
Tyree Dudley is a standout defensive lineman for Frankford High. Rubin Lee, though not a headliner, is a trench guy for George Washington.
The words flew back and forth all week, with the affable Dudley admittedly setting the tone, in anticipation of Saturday's Public League final at Northeast. And there were a few more exchanges along the way, mostly from Lee as his Eagles led almost throughout.
But when it was over, and Frankford owned its second consecutive Pub title, Dudley never came close, even in jest, to uttering a disparaging word.
"You don't do that to family," he said, quietly. "I gave him a hug and told him, 'Good game.' "
What a wild, down-the-stretch ride! Much of it was the sloppy version of bumpy, yes. But the twists and turns provided non-stop drama, along with incredible entertainment, and many members of both teams were reduced to tears.
The moment came with 39.5 seconds remaining, when junior Ervin Goodson kicked an 18-yard field goal - his first career attempt, but actually closer than PAT distance - on fourth-and-goal from a foot.
That happened after his coach, Mike Capriotti, called a timeout and scrapped an original thought to go with a quarterback sneak after trotting into the huddle and asking, "Erv, can you kick it?" and getting "Yeah" in response. Also after Washington coach Ron Cohen twice called let's-ice-him timeouts.
Favorite Frankford 15, Underdog Washington 14. Phew!
Dudley was on the sideline, crouched on the artificial surface and looking in the other direction, as Goodson, the ballboy in '05, approached the kicking block in straight-on fashion.
"I was kind of scared because everything was on my shoulders," Goodson said. "I just blocked everything out."
"I couldn't watch," Dudley said. "I was breakin' down [due to nerves]. I heard our crowd noise. That's what told me.
"Erv's a cool cat. He just comes out here and makes plays [also three catches for 76 yards and a touchdown] like he's been doing it all his life."
The 6-4, 305-pound Dudley, being eyed by the likes of Temple, West Virginia and James Madison, is the Pioneers' defensive bulwark. He finished with six stops, as did linemate Brandon Allen. Josh Burnett and Dwayne Lewis led the way with eight apiece while Lamont Fitzgerald posted seven.
The season's most important stops came when Chris Spence dumped Fateen Brown (21 carries, 82 yards, one TD) for a 5-yard loss on third-and-4, and when Steven Ortega and Terrell Lewis followed by swallowing punter Scott Marano for an 11-yard loss, back to the 5, after he'd dropped the snap.
"The whole game, it seemed like we were one big play away," Dudley said. "We heard them saying, 'Watch out! They're gonna bring the house!'
"They looked nervous, like they were trying to do extra things as opposed to the usual. Maybe that [mind-set] got back to the punter."
Andreas Hudson (7-for-13, 130) picked up 3 yards on first down, but only because tight end Warren Tinsley pounced on his fumble. Jeff "Milky" Jones and Anthony Bright stopped Nate Johnson for no gain, then Hudson got a yard and 2 feet against a sea of humanity.
"We had three chances to get 5 yards, and didn't," Capriotti said. "After that it was Erv's turn. He's been kicking the ball good all year."
Hudson remembered clearly that Frankford won last year's title game by one point, 14-13, over Northeast. Also that he made only spot appearances after sustaining a foot injury in the semifinal vs. Germantown.
That's why this one was so important. And why coming through felt so special.
"Seemed like we were on the field the whole game," he said. "Lots of times this year, the offense carried us, but we had to do it today. I'm so proud of my guys for staying together and buckling down. We looked each other in the eye. We had to man up, which we did.
"I haven't ever been on a team like this. So together. Where you see one, you see us all, in school or out. This is a real family. I'm always going to remember these guys."
Title tidbits
Frankford owns 26 PL crowns, twice as many as No. 2 Central. Former coach Al Angelo (10 from 1965-84, '87) was in attendance... The Pioneers are 4-0 in title games decided by one point... Nate Johnson (4 yards) and Washington's Jay Sloh (21 yards) posted rushing TDs... Washington's Anthony Bright and Rich McPhail had interceptions... The teams traded lost fumbles before the Washington series that ended on the 5... The Pioneers' state-playoff appearance will not come until next month. They'll host North Catholic at 9:45 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.
