Where To Go From Here?
On March 4, Neumann-Goretti defeated
Roman, 44-41, on a last-second trey by
Derrick "D.J." Rivera. Thereafter, Rivera, followed by teammates and fans,
students
and adults included, dashed to a spot in front of Roman's fans, who'd been
heckling
him hard all game, to celebrate and "give a little back." Some Roman students
threw
debris, including plastic bottles with water/soda, and at least one Roman
student was
hit by something thrown in the other direction. In time, more than 100 city
police
officers reported to La Salle to disperse the crowd and gain control of the
situation.
On March 5, Stephen Pawlowski, who oversees high schools for the
Archdiocese,
said a complete investigation would be conducted. Among the possible penalties,
he
said: forfeiture of the title by N-G.
Here
is that story.

Well, we can now NO LONGER say, "Only in the "Pub'"; that was a disgrace
for the WHOLE city!
This is going to hurt the recruiting of all the kids in the city by
colleges and universities that are going to wonder about the players' on
field/court character!
TWO steps forward, joining the PIAA and Chestnut Hill rejoining Interac
Football; THREE steps back, throwing bottles on court, players and fans
taunting each other, and attacking & injuring law enforcement personnel!
What a SHAME!

While I don't in any way condone this type of behavior, is it all
that really surprising, when compared to what has been going on in
professional sports for so long? The fact is that professional athletes
are role models, despite what Charles Barkley thinks! It used to be
that kids would try to emulate their heroes by hitting home runs or
scoring as many points as possible in a game. Now they want to have the
"gangsta" attitude and tattoos that many of the NBA stars have. I
attended Catholic high school in the early 60's and this type of
behavior would never had happened in either the Public or Catholic
league. Times are achanging!
Take care,
John
(Ted's note: Occasional problems at CL games go WAY back. Player
hit in the head with a rock, necessitating stitches. Player hit in the foot
by
a whiskey bottle. Chunk of ice thrown onto the court. Fans throwing trash
at each other. But this time, more than 100 cops showed up and the
incident
received national attention. That's the difference.)

I attended all three games with NG-Roman. In the second game a
Roman Player slapped Antonio Jardine in the face and all he received was
a technical foul. Jardine did not retaliate at all. After the game was
over one of their players came over to the NG fans and celebrated, or as
some people say taunted, and once again NG Fans did not throw any debris
. I also attended the Championship Game and a Roman Student was the
first to throw anything. The Security and Police were very inept in
taking charge of the situation. I heard one Police Officer tell a fan to
put his baby down, inviting the fan to fight. Very unprofessional. The
only fights I saw was between the police and adult fans.

I have been attending CL games since the days of Jimmy
Lynam, Steve
Courtin, and George Sutor and for the most part the crowd behavior
was
exemplary. There were of course exceptions, but, too few to warrant
any
concern. This; however, has not been the case in recent years and
the
behavior has grown uglier and uglier. The fans no longer cheer for
their
respective teams rather they expend their energies taunting the
opposition thus fanning the flames for potential blow-ups. Some of
the
players feed into this causing greater unrest.
Sportsmanship has seemed to taken a vacation. I believe there are many
reasons for this, not the least of which is recruiting which has
created
a David and Goliath league fanning resentment ( I sincerely believe
that
you have seen the last true neighborhood team to win the CL
Basketball
Title the ’98 Judge team) certain contributors to your web site who
spend their time attempting to be clever by making fun of individual
players on opposing teams and school officials who make no attempt
during the game to stop the taunting ( they do have access to a
microphone).
I do not foresee anything that will change the aforementioned and as a
result I only see more boorish behavior and rowdyism leading to
locked
out gyms and spectator free games.
Sincerely,
Fran McDonald

Well as a Roman student, and being present at the game, I would like out
by saying congratulations to Neumann and the team. I think it’s a little
much to revoke the title, they played, they played well, and they won,
case closed; it’s theirs. The league shouldn’t force forfeits next
season or place them on prohibition because the teams themselves did
nothing wrong, it was the fan base. Rivera shouldn’t have run over to
our section and taunt us though, that’s poor sportsmanship, he should
have gone and celebrated with his team, and his crowd, not ours. I would
like to see him reprimanded or punished to some degree for this action.
As for the Roman students throwing bottles, that was completely
inappropriate and I would love to see these very few students be
expelled. Someone else had commented that the flyers of Flava Flav were
inappropriate and should have been removed; it was just our way of
getting to him. Another issue that needs to be dealt with is the fans
foul language and inappropriate chants, this is the CATHOLIC league, and
we are representing our schools and our faith. The security at these
games needs to be reconsidered defiantly, and the bringing of outside
beverages banned. It’s a shame to see something like this happen In the
CATHOLIC LEAGUE….it just goes to show the message we're taught in school,
doesn’t seem to make it past the classrooms.

Man what a terrible way to end such a great weekend for basketball.
Gratz wins the pub title after a short hiatus and then NG and Roman
battle it out with the outcome undecided until the final shot. It
just
goes to show that no matter whether it's the public league or any
other
league there will always be a couple of idiots who feel the need to
take
it to another level. Thank God no one was seriously hurt. After
reading
your article this morning I do feel as though taking the title away
from
NG would be unfair unless more than one player instigated the
altercation. Besides the obvious, having more security in the arena,
I
feel as though those who were involved in this altercation should be
punished to the fullest. Students will be students and players have
to
learn to deal with hecklers. However, throwing objects onto the
court is
just wrong. If it is found that the NG players were responsible in
any
way for the altercation then maybe a reduction of non-league games
if
they are underclassman as well as suspensions for any players
(regardless of grade) involved are necessary. But to take away a
title
they earned fair and square on the court is wrong. The players did
what
they had to on the court and the classroom to win the championship
and
to have it all taken away for something that happened after the game
would be very unjustified. For those adults involved they need to
think
about the examples they are setting for their children. They also
should
be punished and banned from future games for a while.

Mr. Pawlowski:
I have some info to share with you in regards to the Saturday nite game.
99% of Philadelphia know that when the winner shot was scored by
Neumann- the player DJ Rivera ran down the court to celebrate his CL
victory. Kudos to him. As every one knows and the films show, he
ran all over the court as well as the end of the court to where the
Roman student body were sitting. As today's paper states in the last
column, paragraph two, the Code of Conduct is read before each game,
as
asks that all athletes and spectators honor this code by refraining
from
the use of vulgar language, abusive behavior or inappropriate
cheering.
I could not agree more !!!!!
But here goes the info, I am not sure if you understand that when the
Roman boys were holding up large 11x12 pictures of a rapper who is
not a
good looking man, is quite an insult to DJ Rivera as well as any
human.
That is in the Code of Conduct as abusive behavior and inappropriate
cheering !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know as a mother I would not want those pictures chanted to my son
!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I am surprise that it was not out of control before the ending of
the game with that insult made to Mr. Rivera.
Here goes: the last two meets this year with Neumann vs. Roman, both
times Roman stepped out of line and the Neumann boys did not throw
any
thing at Roman.
The last game especially when Roman visited Neumann on Jan. 29th at
Neumann, the game was very close, and the films show this very
clearly
---- the end of the game (a Roman player) ran down to the
Neumann student body and taunted them with trash talking verbiage
!!!!!
The Neumann boys did not throw anything at him or them. The Neumann
boys swallowed the loss, with no revenge and this now became two
losses
to Roman. Now the game prior to that was at Philadelphia University
on Jan. 6th and the student body of Roman were on the stage using
trash
verbiage again and one of there own teaches standing next to the
stage
had to control his own students. It was horrible.
As a mother of a Catholic High School student, I can honestly say that
you can not go to Roman Catholic's court on their third floor and
enjoy
a game because the student body sit on the stage and take the
pleasure
of watching a game right out of you, that you feel like you had your
arms cut off as you go down the three flights of stairs to exit the
building. You cant wait to get to your car and get away from that
atmosphere !!!!!!!!! I am very very sincere in telling you this,
and I think that the Roman Catholic boys' behavior has been going on
too
long as nasty young men. You ask other Catholic High Schools, such
as
O'Hara, Bonner etc.... and every one of them do not enjoy going to
play
Roman especially at their court.
In closing, Mr. Rivera celebrated his win as any other young man would
have done and run down the court and jump up and down in victory.
Neumann boys did not act to Roman in their victory on Jan. 29th and
look
how they acted when Neumann celebrated their victory. I do not
believe that you should in any way remove the CL title from Nuemann
they
earned that and the game was earned by either team. By removing the
title from Nuemann will start another riot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What should be removed is the word Catholic from Roman
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Roman should read " Roman boys high school "
not even young men !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your attention
A proud mother of a Catholic High School Student.
----
This whole debacle really bothers me because being a student in
the
Catholic League this will affect me and other schools that have
students
that were bitter because they lost. Rivera should be punished
because
no matter how much someone heckles you the player should never run
toward the opposing fans to rub it in...losing is enough. I mean
these
kids just never used their heads and they should be punished because
now
thanks to Roman and NG the rest of the Catholic League will be
affected.
Added security and maybe even not allowing people to storm the
field.
The NG fans who ran to the Roman student section were just asking
for
problems and its a disgrace that stuff like this happens to a league
like ours that promotes sportsmanship and camaraderie. These two
teams/schools should be punished accordingly for this mess and I do
not
believe that other schools should have to be punished because two
teams/schools couldn't use their common sense.

Ted, I wanted to take this opportunity to give
my opinion on the
N-G/Roman Championship game. First things first,
it was a terrific
basketball game, one for the ages, but one that
will be quickly and
sadly forgotten due to some regrettable actions
and non-actions by a
great number of people associated with the game.
I hope that the powers-to-be don’t go extreme with the punishment that
is inevitable at this point. There are many
people that can accept some
level of responsibility, but in my opinion it
would be foolish to strip
N-G of the championship that they earned.
Based solely on what I saw, the Security needs to be improved. During
the game, the PA announcer made an announcement
that the baseline area
needed to be “cleared out”. This was never done.
No one even moved.
Also, there were some “adults” who really need
to act like adults. I
understand the NG/Roman rivalry is one of the
most heated rivalries in
the city, but people really need to cheer
positively and enjoy two
terrific well-coached teams playing for the
Championship. I question
why the PCL allows the student sections to have
rollouts and signs that
obviously harass an opposing player, this should
not be allowed. If
students are allowed (by their administration)
to taunt an opposing
player, why are we then all so surprised that
the player may want to
taunt the opposing students when he hits the
game winning shot? If the
rollouts and signs didn’t exist, a confrontation
MAY have been avoided.
In a game that I was involved in, (1992 Northern Division Championship
Game at the Palestra) a similar (but different)
incident took place. As
Dougherty was going to win and the clock was
running out, CD fans
prematurely stormed the court and began taunting
the Father Judge fans.
After order was restored and a technical
assessed to Dougherty, the game
ended. Once again, the fans stormed the court
only to have both fan
bases begin throwing garbage at one another. It
was an ugly incident.
The following year, CD’s home game versus Father
Judge was closed to all
fans (parents included). The Archdiocese made it
clear with that
punishment that this type of behavior was not
acceptable.
In turn, I hope people don’t want to point all the blame at the
players.
On Saturday, DJ Rivera was obviously caught up
in a very emotional
moment that most of us will never experience in
our lives. Did he
overreact in his moment of joy? Probably, but
let’s not forget that he
is a 17 or 18 year old kid who still has some
maturing to do. As he
gets older, DJ will learn how to react to
situations such as these. Who
of us didn’t make some immature mistakes when we
were in High School?
I hope that there are some positives brought by this “investigation”
that Mr. Pawlowski’s office is conducting.
Better security, clearly
defined fan behavior guidelines and so forth.
Anything that can
continue to make the PCL a premier league would
be beneficial in this
situation.
There’s a lot of blame and finger-pointing that could be passed
around
here, but until the individual PCL schools take
a stand on what the
proper etiquette should be, and get their
individual fans/student
sections under control, instances such as these
might continue.

It is truly sad when a great game can be completely wiped away
by the
sad actions of a few. The efforts of two great teams to get to that
point and all the hard work that was put into it, GONE. Why? I Think
Security failed on many levels (I work security part- time for major
events) On TV when the game was over you can clearly see a CSC guard
cheering as the floor is getting over run. At any sporting event there
should be a strict "no cans or bottles policy" And the biggest thing
that should have been done is "No negative signs" e.g. Temple "vs" Duke,
I was doing searches at the door and came across a group of Temple
students with over 300 picture masks of J.J. Redick's mother.
Common sense told me Don't let the masks in, it can only cause trouble.
With all the posters these students had, it should have told someone it
wasn't a positive thing. Before every event the rules are made CLEAR,
vulgar language or any direct dialogue with a player should be
prohibited. (everyone remembers the Domi incident) When it happens you
warn the person or persons, next time they get ejected from the event.
The most important thing we can do is learn from this, How can we make
it better? Stripping a title from players who have worked so hard to get
that honor, would be devastating. Disqualifying both teams from post
season next year would equally be devastating.
Thanks Ted I hope we can get past this, and make the league better for
learning from it.
-- Bill
(Ted's note: There is no doubt that Roman's administrators knew about the
Flava Flav "faces" way before the game started. At one point they were
held
up en masse by the kids and an Inquirer photographer even took a picture
that appeared on the philly.com website. And, yes, that one CSC guard
was
enjoying N-G's victory as much as anyone -- smile.)

Obviously, as someone who has been involved
with the Philadelphia Catholic League for a number of years I have
strong feelings on what transpired at the end of the Catholic League
final this past Saturday. I think that what took place was terrible,
unfortunate, and embarrassing. The melee that ensued after the final
buzzer has certainly given our league a black eye of epic proportions.
I don’t condone the actions of any of the parties involved, but I
refuse to place blame on just one or on a handful of individuals. I
believe there were many elements that contributed to the fracas that
marred what is suppose to be the culmination of one of the best high
school basketball leagues in the state. Could a player have used better
judgment in how to display his emotions after a game-winning shot? Could
student sections have behaved more appropriately? Is it possible that
coaches could have better prepared their players for this situation?
Could school administrators done a better job of prepping their student
sections on what is to be considered acceptable behavior? Could the
adult supporters have been better example-setters and peacemakers,
rather than uncontrollable participants? The answer to all these
questions is in my mind is a capital Y-E-S!!!!
So, with so much blame to go around I don’t think the punishment
should be placed upon one player, one coach, or one team. I think the
goal of the archdiocese should be to hand out a fair punishment that is
equally distributed and to make sure that something like this never
occurs again.
I don’t think stripping Neumann-Goretti of their title is the
answer. I also don’t think putting N-G or Roman on probation for next
year is the answer either. In my opinion, I think there are too many
people; players, coaches, and fans affiliated with these schools that
are good people and shouldn’t be made to pay the price for the actions
of a few.
The events of Saturday night in my opinion were the result of a
steady progression of negativity that has been expanding for some time
now in our league. Like a volcano, it’s only a matter of time before it
erupts and the aftermath isn’t always going to be something good to look
at. However, the clean up process is a necessity and the time is now.
I’m not positive what the punishments should even be. I know a
statement must be made, but there are just so many factors involved that
it is going to be hard to come up with a reasonable and fair decision in
the eyes of everyone. I trust that the people leading our schools will
do a great job in this matter.
Regardless of what happens I believe that it is essential that we
use these events as a learning experience. A learning experience not
just for the people associated with Neumann-Goretti and Roman, but for
the entire Philadelphia Catholic League.
Unfortunately, bad or negative things happen in all walks of life.
For the Philadelphia Catholic League our turn was Saturday night. No, it
doesn’t mean we have to accept it or tolerate what happened. I don’t
think anyone would want that. However, I hope we can resolve it, not
continue to dwell on it, and eventually get back to being the great
league we have been for so many decades.
The PCL has too long a history and a one-of-a-kind tradition not to
overcome this bump in the road. As long as everyone involved has the
foresight to see that changes need to be made and beliefs need to be
reshaped, then there is no reason why this league can’t continue to be
the great league it has always been.
Thanks,
Huck Palmer
(Ted's note: We'll keep our fingers crossed, Huck. Everyone is watching
Stephen Pawlowski and those he commands. Let's hope they get it right.)
----
Mr. Silary, after reading the comments on this
whole RC/NG situation, it
appears that Roman is getting a bad reputation for the events that took
place last Saturday night. I was a member of Roman's graduating class
last year. I am not defending the actions of Roman students, but i am
defending the reputation of the school. The people that commented
before have no idea what goes on between the walls at Broad & Vine, and
would not know that every morning during homeroom, the principle, Mr.
O'Neill comes on the TV and promotes the upcoming nights game. When he
finishes talking about the game he always finished by saying " remember
only positive cheering". For the one mother to say "the Catholic should
be removed from Roman Catholic High School" is just wrong. All because
of a situation involving mostly parents, Roman gets a bad reputation.
There was another comment made about how opposing teams players and
parents do not like playing in Roman's gym. That is called a home court
advantage. The student section is well....a student section.
It is supposed to be loud and a bother for the opposing team. Does
anyone complain about the "Cameron Crazies"? NO. The student section
is a big part of high school and college basketball. When you walk into
Roman's gym, it is an intimidating atmosphere with its championship
banners and lack of seating. If you dont like it, don't attend the
game. And as far as DJ Rivera running down the court to Romans student
section after hitting the game winner, what was he thinking? You run to
your own schools section after hitting a remarkable shot like that, not
the opposing teams. He was asking for trouble and he got it. Hopefully
Roman's reputation does not get tarnished any more than it has been this
last week, and that this kind of fiasco does not happen again.
-- Chris Pester Class of 2005
(Ted's note: As much fun as Roman's gym is, I've been surprised all
these years that it hasn't been banned as a site. It's not legal! The
three-point arc meets the sideline about halfway between the baselines
and foul lines, so treys of course are impossible from the corners to
the
near wings. Unbelievable. Could you imagine a football field, say, with
only eight feet between the goalposts? Or a baseball field with only 80
feet between the bases? "Ah, the place is too small. Couldn't make a
full-sized diamond. Sorry.")
----
As a current Roman senior and a member of
the Roman student section I can
say that both schools are equally at fault for what took place on
Saturday
at LaSalle University. Everyone needs to drop the whole DJ River-Flava
Flav
thing because it has nothing to do with what happened. The Roman
students
held up the Flava Flav signs three times: before the game, during player
introductions, and when Rivera took his only two free-throws of the
night.
Rivera didn't seem to be too upset about the pictures, he actually
laughed
at them during warmups. Nobody has said anything about the Neumann
student
section chanting "Wana-Faker", a reference to Roman players Brian and
Bradley Wanamaker. That chant is just as much a personal shot as saying
that Rivera looks like Flava Flav. I don't think that holding up photo
copies of a washed-up rapper had an effect on the game or what ensued
afterwards. Another thing that many people fail to talk about is the
fact
that when Rivera ran over to Roman's section so too did the fans from
Neumann's student section. Rivera and his teammates have every right in
the
world to celebrate, however, the students of N-G had no right whatsoever
to
run over and start screaming obscenities and giving obscene hand
gestures.
That is what started the debris throwing incident. The events that took
place outside of the gym were due in part to the incompetence of the
security staff and the overreaction of adults who should not have been
on
the court to start with. A certain player's father attempted to come
into
Roman's student section after getting hit with an empty water bottle,
but he
was soon caught by the police and chaos followed. I am not putting the
blame on any individual school, they are both equally at fault. Neumann
should not have to forfeit their title, the best player on the court hit
the
biggest shot of his life. Both teams should be commended for an
extremely
hard-fought game that came down to the final shot.
As for the comments about Roman's gym, it's been there for over 100
years
and its tradition provides for one of the best atmosphere's in
Philadelphia
basketball. Opposing teams are supposed to feel uncomfortable, it's
called
having the home-court advantage. Don't worry though, Roman is in the
process of annexing a new building and constructing a new gym, so that
will
be one less thing that you have to complain about.
-- Bill Landis Class of 2006
(Ted's note: People are forgetting one thing, Bill. And by the way,
thanks
for signing your name to your note. Everyone ran over because they
wanted to
celebrate with D.J. If he'd run to N-G's bench, I doubt the celebration
would
have spilled down to the other end if the court. And if the fans/players
had
started heading in that direction, the security force would have been
better
prepared to stop them because there would have been some delay.
Obviously,
this whole situation is FILLED with would-haves and could-haves.)
----
Ted,
This game was one of the best games ever played in Philadelphia high
school basketball, with one of the most exciting endings ever, a game
winning shot. I attend N-G and I can honestly say that what happened
after
the game was a disgrace. The aftermath was a disgrace but the media took
this way out of hand. It was not the students of N-G or Roman that
started the fighting it was fans that didn't go to either school. In my
school this whole week we had to hear about this fighting at the game.
One of my teachers told me that when he was in high school his team made
it to the city championship in the 1970s and there was huge fight that
even blows this out of picture. (I think it was St. Johns and Gratz??
The team Kobe Bryant's father played on was the team Theo ). I just
think
the media didn't get all the facts and puts all the blame on the fans
and just wasn't right. The media always blows situations out of
proportion. For example Barry Bond steroids, Brittany Spears and the
baby on the lap, and a lot of other stories.
I am a Football player for N-G and I know how it feels to be taunted.
What DJ did was wrong -- really wrong I would say. But the referees and
the school staff of roman were wrong for letting their fans have that
sign about him in the stands of Flava Flav. But as Roman and N-G fans
agree on: It was a great game and what happened afterward shouldn't lead
to N-G having the title taken away. They earned it and deserved it.
-- A.M.
(Ted's note: Kobe's dad played for Bartram. Can't remember that there
was a big fight at that City Title game in '72 -- Bartram vs. St. Thomas
More,
which closed in June 1975 -- but perhaps there was. I do remember a
couple
of stabbings at a Pub playoff in '71. I hope no one reading MY stories
has
gotten the impression there was actual fighting, as in face-to-face
fisticuffs,
between the students. Because there wasn't. Roman's kids never came onto
the court. Of course, I have no true idea what went on outside.)
----
Concerning your article on the CL brawl, and with
the ADs meeting. I am a Neumann
Grad, Head Coach of the Girls at Cape May Tech in NJ, and a parent. I
attended our
championship game on Sat. and was impressed with everything I saw, until
the end of
the game. Sitting a few rows behind the Roman bench I saw the incidents.
Items being
thrown, taunting on both sides, and the "parent" who could not control
himself.
Neumann's coach even gave him the trophy to hold up, but he could not
control himself. The police had enough and ran him out. I believe that
was the start of what
happened in the hallway + outside. That has been taken care of and that
is where it
should end. Both LaSalle U, and the City Police should take a look at
themselves.
To enter the game, one side door open (please) over 3 thousand people
into one entry
way. With all the police who showed up "after" the event, if a quarter
of them where
in attendance on site this would of never happened. I hope the ADs take
a look at
that. Yes, some players were wrong, but why should the kids lose out on
shaking
hands, cutting down nets, ect. Some may say its a sign of the times
(behavior),
but those in charge should have thought ahead.
Thank you for your time.

Ted,
I just want to share one thought on this whole Neumann-Goretti/Roman
Basketball championship.
These boys of the Neumann/Goretti team were denied the pleasure of an
award ceremony.
As a team these boys earned that and more. Where to place the blame on
the aftermath is as always everyone's own opinion.
My concern here is that I personally watched this team play all year. I
saw defeat and I also saw triumph. I always saw these boys act in a
sportsmanship like manner on the court and off the court.
The coaches of these boys have always instilled not only basketball
techniques but respect.
To work hard all year and to have the pleasure of cutting down the net
and taking pictures with family and friends taken away is sad.
Can we please give these boys the praise that they deserve?
D.J. Rivera's winning shot was amazing and the way the team played as a
team was awe inspiring.
Let's hear it for the Boys of the Neumann/Goretti Catholic League
Champions.
No matter what happens no one can take away that they won the title
game.
You go guys!!! Great job. I am personally proud of every one of you.
-- Nikki Badessa
(Ted's note: That hit me as much as anything else -- the no-celebration
part -- when I was trying to take pics in N-G's cramped locker room. At
least for the moment, the kids don't even have pieces of the net. Maybe
the
players can go back and have a little ceremony?)
----
Hi Ted, I can't believe that almost a week
later you can't open a paper
to the sports section without reading about the brawl after the game. I
know what happened was a serious incident but I can't believe that Mr
Pawlowski is seriously considering taking disciplinary actions against
players or coaches from Neumann. While I do think that some fans should
have some type of action taken against them . I don't think that
player's and students celebrating a win no matter how exuberant called
for what happened. In my opinion Mr Pawlowski is being very hypocritical
and the only reason he is considering taking action is because of all
the media attention. Cardinal O'Hara rushed on the court toward the NG
student section after their girls' win, and a few objects were thrown on
the
court but order was quickly restored and they went on with their
celebration, which they greatly deserved . You don't hear about that
incident because there was no media attention or police presence. By the
way, I wonder if Ta'londa thinks that her school should be stripped of
the title for the same thing NG players and students did or maybe she
didn't go to that game. As for not letting the student section paint
there chest and bring signs, I don't see anything wrong with that as
long as it is no offensive or derogatory .My son was one of the
students painted, this was not the only game the students were painted,
just the only one where a problem arose . As far as the players and
students rushing the court, this is a time honored tradition not only on
the high school level but in college as well . As for playing in an
empty gym next year ,why should all fans from NG and Roman be punished
for the actions of a few .Also, while I have the utmost respect for the
Philadelphia police department and the difficult job they do there were
policemen who did a very poor job that night , there was an officer
auguring with a nun and the students outside the arena telling them to
keep moving while the nun was trying to tell him that she had
instructions to hold the students there for the bus, I asked him if he
was going to be responsible for their safety if something happened to
them while they walked down Olney Ave. I have gone to many high school
sporting events since my son has attended NG and my son and his fellow
students at this school have an unbelievable school spirit ,one that I
wish me and my fellow students had when I went to Bishop Neumann . Let's
not do anything stupid and kill the wonderful school spirit that these
students possess .I only hope that the AD's and other officials treat NG
fair this time. In my opinion ,it would be the first time . As one of
the other contributors stated ,the Catholic league seems to Make up
rules as they please . Schools take players from other teams, use
ineligible players and nothing happens, but NG obtains two girls from
another school and they have to sit out a year -- not the same standard
.
I know for a fact that this standard does not apply to all Catholic
high schools. It's a shame that certain schools can say and do as they
please. It's time to be fair .
Thank you,
Al Howlett '74
(Ted's note: The molehill first became a mountain when such a
display
of knuckleheadism -- the parent and police getting into it long and hard
--
took place right in the middle of the court, in view of everyone, and
brought about the arrival of so many police from around the city. The
mountain grew larger when the story about the trouble went out over the
national news-service wires and made appearances in such papers as USA
Today. I'd imagine the archdiocese received calls/e-mails of
outrage/distress
from CL loyalists now spread around the country. The faster the
archdiocese
acts, the faster we'll tell everyone what happened, the faster it will
go away
. . . Until next season, when we'll have to deal with the fallout (empty
gyms,
suspensions for coaches, toned-down student sections; whatever's going
to
happen.) Thanks again, Al.)
----
Ted, the CL championship game was
awesome! First, how can you take
the game away from the winners. N-G WON THAT GAME!!!!!!! I think DJ
Rivera is getting a bad rap by the media, for celebrating. Roman's
students could be very hurtful at times. Please consider their
actions as well. Many games that I attended this year I heard
profanity use by coaches, yes that how close I sit. Ted, I feel like
this, this good kid is taking a beat down on this special day, DJ ,
ANTONIO, RICK, EARL, JAMAL and FRANKIE great Game!!!! DJ, good
people sometimes get a bad rap, but great people over come it ALL.
Enjoy the rest of the school year N-G . Ted, I think some of us
forget that they are still teenagers.
-- NS
(Ted's note: A whole bunch of good people made bad decisions to make
this all happen. Truly bad kids don't last long in Catholic schools, no
matter
how much their tuition money is needed. At least I hope we haven't
reached
that point . . . )
----
First off congratulations to Neumann and Roman for
great seasons, and the
championship game was an incredible event to attend. It is a shame the
celebration and the great game had to be ruined by the incident that
happened afterward, and it would be even worse if Neumann was stripped
from its title. As a former Catholic League Basketball player, one
thing you learn is that heckling, taunting, and trash talking is a part
of the game. You know that if you were on the streets, these kids would
not be yelling and saying absurd things to you, but since you are on the
court and they know you can not do anything about it, they continue to
trash you and try and get in your head. So as a player, it can get
really frustrating at times, but you learn to deal with. So when Rivera
hit that 3, I don't blame him for running over and taunting the fans and
celebrating the win in front of them, considering they had been
taunting him all game. I think its ridiculous for Rivera to take the
heat for the whole incident. Roman fans can dish out it out all game,
but when one player dishes it back for not even 1 minute, they have to
resort to throwing bottles and other objects. I think its a disgrace
they way the Roman fans acted. Taunting is apart of the game, but
throwing things is just not acceptable. I think the students involved
with throwing the objects should be punished and I think the AD's of the
schools should do a better job controlling their student section. Once
again, congrats to Rivera and the rest of Neumann, its just a shame
Neumann
could not have had the proper celebration ceremony of cutting down the
nets.

(Ted's note: I'm sure at some point N-G will have a special assembly,
or something similar. Let's hope so.)
----
As i was leaving the game after
that beautiful winning shot for
N/g championship; i heard the public address announcer request that all
fans and players to clear the floor. So , they could conduct the
trophy presentation ceremony. I heard him make the request several
times as i was going down the stairs. I had no idea that this melee was
taking place until i got to my car to leave the parking lot. I was the
third car in line from the security booth on the parking lot next to
Gola arena; but we could not go out to olney avenue; because of the
sudden arrival of the police vehicles. It took about 15 minutes before
any car left that parking lot including me. There were police vehicles
coming up broad st. From below the roosevelt expressway and police
vehicles heading east on the roosevelt expressway fron the schulkill
Expressway to the broad st. Exit for lasalle university exit of the
Roosevelt express way. I thought some one was fatally injured at the
post game celebration. Thank god this wasn't so. Maybe, if the
students, players, and adult fans had listened and honored the public
address announcers requests to clear the floor an award ceremony could
have been conducted and the melee may not have happened. However, since
it did; if the individuals from both schools can't be identified and
punished individually; then i think both schools should hold a general
detention for their students and any adults involved to hear an anger
management lecture from an anger management expert. This should be
mandatory for continued enrollment in these schools. I believe the
District attorney's office offers this to people who are charged with
disorderly conduct to clear the charge.

What actions have been taken against
students and/or administration of
Roman Catholic? I say Administration as they were sitting with the Roman
student section when the student chanted derogatory remarks towards
cheerleaders and allowed them to boo the cheerleaders during their
cheers.
Once again Neumann/Goretti has taken the brunt of a situation.
Amazing where is the fair play in this? They want the students to act
accordingly, maybe the Office of Catholic Education should start to act
non prejudicial.
Can someone explain why Coach Arrigale was suspended?
-- Nikki Badessa
(Ted's note: The word on that question, Nikki, from Stephen Pawlowski,
of the archdiocese, "We hold coaches responsible for the
behavior of their
players.")
----
This was a downright WITCH
HUNT. Who is running the
PCL? To me it looks like Roman. I'm in total disbelief how Pawlowski
cannot
get all the facts of the situation and be making comments in the paper
ever day. He does not know why the cheerleaders are under the basket?
How many basketball games has this Pawlowski been to. Did he ever
interview Coach Arrigale about the game, that's why I think this was a
WITCH HUNT. Looks to me he did not. The archdiocese drop the ball AGAIN
in my opinion. Demerits for throwing bottles and trash at people on the
court. Coach Arrigale suspended four games. Did I say that I think this
was a WITCH HUNT. Sounds like Roman is running the show to me. (Can you
find out if Coach Arrigale was able to sit in the meetings or if
Pawlowski interview him I would like to hear your opinion if the
archdiocese did not talk to the Coach Arrigale)
-- Joey T.
(Ted's note: I'm not sure how much of a sports background Stephen
Pawlowski has, but he was not the only decision-maker here. One of the
people he works under, Bishop McFadden, was West Catholic's head
coach in the 1970s, and he's a sports nut. In my story for Saturday's
Daily News, Pawlowski acknowledged that Arrigale was not given a
chance to defend himself. His explanation was very simple: Coaches
are responsible for the actions of their players. However, I find it
amazing,
and distressing, that Carl was not interviewed, or at least given the
chance to turn in a written statement. That's one of the most basic
rights in our country, is it not?)

my son is a junior at roman catholic high school.
both my son and my
husband were at the cl championship game. my son plays varsity soccer
for roman. when roman plays ng at their home field, the football team
is practicing on the next field. if all spectators are not allowed at
ng/roman games, then this should include ng football team.
by the way, why does the ruling include all sports?
-- thank you, a concerned parent
(Ted's note: Spectators will only be banned from the N-G/RC
basketball games . . . unless there are further problems.)
----
Ted
The suspension of Carl is crazy. What the heck did he do? Carl is a great
guy and he works really hard with these kids and has run an
exceptionally decent program. I'm sure NG isn't paying Carl very
much!!! Ha Ha.
Now he has an ugly 4 game suspension on his resume. Just doesn't seem
fair.
If anything the conduct of the Roman fans started everything. When you
call DJ Flava Flav you are calling DJ a truly young man. The Archdiocese
should reprimand the authorities at Roman for this poor sportsmanship by
their students.
-- Charlie P
(Ted's note: I'm confident that Roman's administration was reamed out,
big time, by Pawlowski and maybe others behind the scenes.)
----
Ted, that's some BS. I didn't want to write
anything because of
my relationship with the basketball program, but I'm too close to some
of the kids in the school not to write anything.
For the last three or four years, I've been going to all of Roman's
football and basketball games. I don't condone the actions of the
students and fans on either side, but their actions were no worse than
those of the football, soccer and basketball fans of other Catholic
League schools. I've been to plenty of games where kids had their shirts
off and have shouted all types of expletives. At one of the games
during the quarterfinals, one group of students shouted SAT, SAT at the
opposing teams players. Where was the Catholic League then?
We live in an age when a kid who plays sports does something we
don't
like, especially black ones with corn rows and braids, we make examples
out of them. What does the golf team at Roman have to do with
this? What does the the football team at N-G have to do with this?: Not
a DAMN THING. It's just an action to try to keep kids in line. If
LaSalle had better security before, during, and after the game, none of
this would have happened. It was a madhouse outside the gymnasium at
5:30; It would have been worse if all of the N-G fans showed up on time.
Rivera's three was a tough shot by a tough player. If they stripped his
team of the title, I wouldn't have wanted it.
A couple of comments before closing in reference to some of the
previous
comments. One, that Judge team that won the title had to be recruited
by somebody. That's because they had some good players on that team
that other schools probably wanted and the only way to get those kids
was to go after them. (Reeves did go to LaSalle HS before
transferring). Also, don't act as if that was a special team, because if
it wasn't for the administration at Roman, they wouldn't have won. Two,
a wise man once told me four years ago: "you can't get mad if another
school gets a good player" (remember that Ted?). Every school in the
area tries to recruit the best athletes. Athletics programs help to
keep some schools open while it makes others more popular. If you don't
like it, jump on the train or watch your school drown in mediocrity.
And last to the sister who made some disparaging comments about my
alma
mater: Roman Catholic is a school for and made by men. Just because you
decided to send your child elsewhere doesn't give you the right to
disrespect the name. You should be ashamed.
-- Aurelius "Cous" Cousar '90
(Ted's note: Cous is a long-time friend and a true fan of high school
sports,
but especially Roman of course -- smile. If nothing else, schools must
do
"preventive" recruiting to make sure they get guys from their old feeder
areas from the days before open enrollment. And, yes, I remember -- ha
ha.
I have heard many hurtful comments at games in all sports, but you know
how human nature is, Cous. It usually takes one unavoidably bad
situation
to force true change. This was that one situation.)
----
I just finished
reading the sanctions that came about from the Catholic League final. Is
this guy serious?? He blew this totally out of proportion and is making
a mockery of sports!! Only positive cheering?? What's next?? No winners
and losers?? Everyone wins?? That's part of the game. This was one
incident that emotion caused after Rivera hit the shot. This was taken
totally overboard. This makes me sick!!!
(Ted's note: I have a feeling you're not alone.)
----
i am getting nervous about the attacks on
open enrollment by the
people whining about recruiting; because of what happened at the
championship game last saturday. Recruiting has been around for a long
time before open enrollment. Open enrollment is a very good system that
is saving many of the catholic high schools that have suffered declining
enrollment due to the closing of feeder parish schools. parish schools
are still closing in the city as well as the main line due to rising
costs and tuition. Open enrollment is helping to bring students from
other areas to boost the enrollment of the high schools with financial
problems caused by declining enrollment. Open enrollment also allows
students in need to receive a catholic high school education. Open
enrollment needs funding for it to work; so, scholarships and grants
can be provided to help with tuition. Without open enrollment the
catholic high school system as we know it today would virtually be
doomed. There would be only a few survivors of which Roman Catholic
High School would be one; because we've gotten our second wind in this
endeavor. So, please enough of the attacks on open enrollment as a
cause of the problem last week; because that is absurd. All you
catholic high school alumni out there start funding your respective
schools open enrollment programs now; if you want to save your alma
mater. The office of catholic education made decisions based on the
evidence and facts; so let's put this unfortunate incident behind us,
learn from it, move on and make sure it doesn't happen again.
-- JEM, ROMAN ALUMNUS
----
----
Hey Ted,
I'm m a big fan of your website and a bigger sports fan than the
norm. Let me start by saying i attended over 40 basketball games
this
winter. Widener over the holidays, piaa, catholic league, cyo etc.
Starting
from the top of every league is a total lack of leadership from our
leaders themselves. I can count on 1 hand how many games started
with
handshakes before the tipoff. What a disgrace, that should be
mandatory, that should start from the top. Another problem is our
referee
situation. They for the most part want to be friends with the
players [especially the better players], talking to them before the
games, during warmups, during the games. No need or room for that,
referee
the game, take control and don't let the players influence the
calls. More
importantly the refs take way too much crap from the players and
coaches
during the game. I didn't know INTIMIDATION was supposed to be part
of
sports the way it is today. When knowledgeable fans watch what goes
on in
a game today and see how the refs let it go on, it carries on into
the
fanbase, which basically is what were dealing with now [disgrace-no
fear-no respect]. I just want to see 1 ref take a risk 1 game and
officiate the game the way it's supposed to be played and officiated
[no
bull-no carrying on-players or coaches, technicals given when
needed]. I'm
not naive and i know when coaches don't like a certain ref they make
a
phone call to the assigner and ask him not to ref his games
anymore, which handcuffs the refs to a certain point. I still don't
give
the refs a pass on this, DO WHAT IS RIGHT, HAVE A BACKBONE, STAND UP
FOR
YOUR BELIEFS. These refs know that 3/4 of what goes on in a game
today
isn't right, so do something about it. Whoever the assigner is, get
off
your kiester and do what is right and support your refs and not the
coaches. I BLAME YOU FOR MOST OF THIS. The coaches are running the
Catholic League and you allowed it, now look where we are. I would
guess
that players today because of the lack of leadership have no idea
what
the word sportsmanship truly means, and that in it self is a crime.
-- Bill Cassidy
(Ted's note: Coaches definitely can blackball refs they're not
comfortable
with, and request that they not work their games. The assigner tries
to honor
those requests, but as far as I know it's not mandatory. I've often
wondered,
in every sport, why complaining about referees/umpires was ever
tolerated
going way back. Because the fans thought it was cool? Because it
added spice
to the game? Who knows? Do people think we're at the point where NO
bitching, at ALL, should be tolerated? Maybe the rule should be,
"Coach
your team. Leave the refs alone. Not one word." The CL would
probably
cease to exist. smile)
----
Concerning the Neumann-Goretti - Roman debacle, perhaps it
would be good
to prohibit both teams from entering next year's playoffs. That
would
hopefully send a strong message to everyone involved that bad
behavior will not be tolerated. Would it be fair to the players on
both
teams next year, some of whom probably were not even at the game?
Possibly not. Would it be fair to the parents of those players and
fans
of those schools who either were not at the game or were there and
acted
appropriately, possibly not. But it would send a clear message that
would be remembered in years to come. Many years ago we were told
that
playing sports was a privilege, not a right, and that the privilege
could and would be taken away if we did not act appropriately. The
same
thinking could be extended to being a fan of a particular team.
There
appears to be plenty of "blame" to go around on both sides, and I am
sure that many of those involved would react differently if they had
the
chance. Even so, a strong message has to be sent or maybe next time
we
won't be as fortunate and someone will be seriously injured or
worse.
In today's society, where people are killed over parking places or
cutting someone off in traffic, it's a miracle that we aren't
talking
about something much worse than what did happen.
-- Tom Taylor
(Ted's note: Tom has long helped us with city scoring. His father was an
athletic administrator, so he has a keen interest in this situation.
What do
you think? Would it have made sense to ban both schools from next
year's playoffs?)
----
Absolutely Not--neither school should be banned from the
playoffs
next year; because it would be punishment to a future class ( 2007 )
for
something that happened in the present class ( 2006 ) . The future
class for next year's playoffs would be deprived of being scouted by
some colleges that scout only the playoffs. Also, i believe the
major
problem was caused by the N/G adult fan scuffling with the police
officer; which probably led to the city wide police assist call. As
for
coach, Carl Arrigale he is a very good coach from a very good local
high
school ( Penn Charter ) , a very good division three college (
Lycoming
) ; but i believe his 4 game suspension is justified because he lost
control of his players by negative motivation before this game when
his
team should have been motivated by their being a participant in the
championship game. The two previous losses to Roman were anyone's
game.
they could've went either way both times.
Coach Carl didn't handle the rejection by the Alhambra
Tournament people very well and made some negative statements in the
Daily News --feeling slighted ( his personal feelings ) his not
caring
if they invited N/G ever again ( personal feeling); the Alhambra
Tournamnet is prestigious and also scouted by colleges giving all
the
players extra exposure as well as the participating schools program.
No
Coach should jeopardize this. Coach Carl should take the suspension
time to think of positive ways to motivate, they were already a high
favorite to make it to the championship game. Coach Carl already is
a
very good coach and will be a great coach over time if he uses
positive
motivation with his players.
Finally, Coach Seddon did nothing to warrant any discipline. He
is a laid back coach who stays very cool and with his many years of
coaching without incident can be called one of the great coaches
still
in the game. Speedy Morris-- Bill Fox are two more of the great
coaches
still in the game. The office of Catholic Education made the right
decisions let's move on and put this behind us. What do you think,
Ted?
-- ROMAN ALUMNUS
(Ted's note: I've been giving my thoughts along the way on this page --
smile.
Supposedly, the Alhambra people thought N-G had too many total
losses.
Carl and his staff will keep scheduling high-quality non-league
games. There's
no doubt: That approach attracts kids to N-G more than the
possibility of
going to Alhambra. I do agree that banning both schools, or even
one, from
next year's playoffs would have been excessive.)
----
Dear Archdiocese,
I am very disappointed in your decision to take action against the
Coach
and Neumann Goretti basketball team because of the incident that
happened
at the Catholic Championship. I myself and my wife are both alumni
of
Neumann Goretti. My wife and I along with my three daughters
attended 12
years of catholic school and once again I'm not surprised of your
decision. God help you if you took any action against Roman with
their
powerful Alumni that save the Archdiocese a lot of money. I am a
good friend
of the coach of the cheerleaders and all three of my daughters were
on the
team so I still support them during the year. I was there that night
and yes
both sides were loud and taunting each other. So because JD provoked
Roman
by running over to them after his winning shot he made them throw
bottles
onto the court while there were Phila Police family members,
cheerleaders
and teammates, did you ever see the front page with Allen Iverson
holding
his ear up to the opposing crowd (taunting them ) how many bottles
were
thrown at him? Maybe the Catholic league should hire real security
at these
games and maybe Roman Alumni will pay ? Then you come up with no
fans will
be present when they play next year? this is a joke and I am ashamed
to be
Catholic. I've supported the Catholic religion my whole life and
still do,
even while we had Priests being charged with you know what and I
even knew
some of them from High School but I still supported the Church
through
these hard times but I think this is the straw that broke the camels
back! Thank God these bottles weren't glass because this would've
been
really serious . . . What kind of investigation did the Archdiocese
do
to come up with this result? We live in a democracy and this
investigation
was a joke! I think the administration should be investigated and be
removed
from the board as to why the only action was taken against Neumann
Gorretti. Are their Alumni from Roman on this board? This is just
another
scandal that the Church doesn't need so lets be fair and punish the
right
people and have a non biased investigation.
-- Perry J Cocco
----
Hi Ted,
It's me again. To Mr. Al Howlett, Cardinal O'Hara girls should not be
stripped of they're championship. That is because if you were there
you
would know that, the game ended in front of the NG girls bench, not
because they ran over there to rub it in. When the final buzzer
sounded
that's where O'Hara girls among fans began to celebrate. Obviously
boys
basketball is taken way more seriously than girls. Point Blank! And
to
update you, things were thrown at our girls too. As far as the
championship being revised- I don't think so. I don't think Roman
would
want it anyway. Besides what team wants a championship of someone
else's? But didn't what I said would happen, happen? ("Congrats to
N-G
but thanks to your sportsmanship, your celebration wont be long
lived.")
Roman's fans were wrong for throwing things but, NG jumping in their
faces provoking them because they won wouldn't exactly get the
approval
of the CL either. 90% of the players on both teams are recruited
from
public schools. And also are not familiar with the CL. At public
games
almost anything goes. Don't give NG the "glory" because they won and
you
graduated from there, give them "glory" because they did what was
right.
In the end you can't because both sides of fans were in the wrong,
but
as far as the players- my views are same as before.
*Ta'Londa
(Ted's note: Whoa! Hold on here! smile. Nothing "goes" at Pub games.
When stuff happens, it's dealt with. This was an excellent year
behavior-wise.)
---
A few RCHS ALUMNI offer some
constructive criticism and suggestions and a N/G fan attacks the
entire alumni. We are all catholics and the Roman fans do love the
N/G fans and all opposing team fans. The ban on fans for Roman and
N/G is just for our league games not playoff games at this point,
to calm everyone down and send a message. I believe RCHS students
have got the message judging by some of their positive responses to
this site. Also, i am sure the N/G students have got the message
too.
Roman's alumni is no more powerful than any other high school
alumni; e.g. North Catholic has the largest total alumni and they
are doing a great job enlisting participation of their members to
support their open enrollment program; some other schools doing the
same are West Catholic, Father Judge, Little Flower, Hallahan,
Monsignor Bonner High School (Monsignor Bonner graduated from Roman
Catholic high school class of 1908 and was the founder of the
catholic league) Archbishop Prendergast, Archbishop Carroll,
Archbishop Ryan, Conwell-Egan, Archbishop Wood, Cardinal O'Hara and
Neuman-Gorretti; I know because I have quite a few old friends from
Neuman-Gorretti.
Finally, security at neutral game sites are probably included
in the price of the admission ticket. Roman's alumni only supports
the school and its students.

I would like to congratulate Dan Jordan and Brian
Sugden for their basketball reports this season. They were very
entertaining to read no matter which side read them; because of the
clean humor and fun in the reports. I know they made me laugh out
loud quite a few times. They also showed respect for the other
team as in Roman/ Neuman-Goretti January 29 Sugden to Jordan.
These guys may have a future in journalism/sports reporting/news
reporting and especially comedy writing. This is your field Ted.
What do you think Ted? Anyway thank you Brian and Dan for your
entertaining basketball reports all season.

(Ted's note: I think they drove me nuts!! If you could only read what did
NOT make it onto the site . . . smile. They're talented young men
and I have faith they'll find a niche in whatever field they choose.
Thanks for giving them praise.)

Well, troops, we are not alone when it comes to misbehavior at Catholic League championships. Click here to read the story.
--
There is blame to go around on both sides. I was at the
N-G vs. Prep
game at the Prep in 2005, when the N-G parents threw trash and
debris on
the court after their kids lost! The parents are the problem at most
games. Also I believe that certain coaches will tolerate certain
behavior as long as they WIN. Some coaches are intimidated and even
have sponsors who pay the kids tuition so they can attend that
school. A
guarantee to play. Instead of celebrating with his family and N-G
fans,
Rivera decided to celebrate the win with Roman fans. Good Luck next
year.

This is part of a notes column by Ted that appeared in
the Daily News on March 14.
It will be followed by coach Fink's e-mail response.
Response from coach Mike Fink . . .
Ted,
After the fifth person came up to me yesterday to ask me why I was going
to be suspended from coaching, I thought I should
contact you about your
article. Although I agree with your position that the
Neumann coach
should not be disciplined for the actions of his player
in a game, I
believe that you displayed journalistic irresponsibility
by using my
name and the Kennedy Kenrick program in the manner that
you did. You
could just as easily have made your point with a
hypothetical example of
a player losing his composure during a game and then
explain the
absurdity of making the coach responsible. By bringing
my name and our
program into the matter the way that you did has
resulted in the
suggestion that I have committed some type of wrongdoing
deserving of
punishment. As a seasoned journalist for a publication
with wide
circulation, you should know better and should have been
more careful.
Your story has resulted in rumors of my suspension that
I and the
administrators at KK now have to answer.
Incidents of players losing emotional control is common at the high
school level, yet you chose to use the incident
involving Dwayne Davis as
an example with the implication that I am culpable. As
we both know,
these are young kids (Dwayne is a sophomore) playing
basketball with
tremendous emotion in a very competitive environment.
Such emotions may
result in unsportsmanlike behavior, including shoving
another player,
yelling back at a coach, taunting, slamming the ball,
and yelling at an
official. These actions all deserve some type of
punishment depending
on their severity. There is no question that the manner
in which Dwayne
lost his self control is intolerable. I have had a
policy since I took
the head job at KK that any player who receives a
technical foul for
talking to an official is automatically suspended for
the next game.
This policy was enforced twice this season against two
separate players,
and, because of his actions at West Catholic, Dwayne
Davis has been
suspended for the first 3 games next season.
I constantly preach to my players that having poise and controlling
their emotions is paramount during a game and the lack
of such self
control will not be tolerated. However, some kids are
younger and more
emotionally volatile than others and have to learn from
their mistakes
and the consequences associated with them. These are the
lessons that
kids need to learn not just for basketball, but for
life. Ultimately,
we, as coaches, must only be held accountable for our
own behavior, and
I am proud of mine both on and off the court. I have
never lost
emotional control during a game, and the two technical
fouls that I
received this season were strategically deserved without
the use of any
profanity directed at an official. Other than the
frustrations that
manifested themselves by players in addition to Dwayne
during the last
game of the season, I was proud of the way our players
competed and the
sportsmanship they displayed this year and last. I have
even had
numerous officials and other observers comment on the
positive manner in
which our players have conducted themselves over the
last two years, and
I take great pride in emphasizing good sportsmanship.
There is no
excuse for the poor behavior of certain players during
the last game,
and they, along with Dwayne, have been disciplined
accordingly.
We live in a society where headlines are read and deeper levels of
understanding issues are often not probed. Consequently,
I have to bear
the insinuations and implications of your article
suggesting that I
should be suspended, and I have no recourse to defend my
reputation as
widely as you have sullied it. My only hope is that you
will be more
careful and exercise better judgment in the future when
injecting a
person's name into a controversy.

(Ted's note: Mike and I spoke for about a half-hour on this subject --
yes,
in a civil manner; smile. He now knows better why I
handled it the
way I did and I know better where he's coming from. We
have agreed
to disagree, and go forward. Thanks.)

Hi Ted I thought I was done writing about the
Catholic league
championship but the rulings and sanctions against the
teams have got
me mad but not surprised. Once again the powers to be in
the Catholic
league screwed up .It looks to me that NG is taking the
brunt of the
blame for everything that happened after the game . Why
was Coach Carl
Arrigale suspended but not Coach Seddon ? I don't
believe that either
should have been but if you suspend one you should
suspend both. Not
having fans at the NG - Roman games next year is a joke
why punish
everyone for the actions of a few ?Why punish all the
teams at the
schools for what happened at a boys basketball game ? My
wife ,me and my
daughter are graduates of Neumann or Goretti and my son
will soon be. I
believe that Mr. Stephen Pawlowski's actions and
comments could only
viewed as a joke . I have been going to Catholic league
sporting events
for a long time and from his comments you would believe
that this was
the first game to have taunting or negative cheers. He
made comments
about NG cheerleaders being on the baseline and shaking
their pom-poms.
Has he ever seen a game? where would he like them to be
? or maybe he
thinks we shouldn't have cheerleaders at all? These
young ladies work
just as hard as the athletes . they have to practice and
go to
cheerleader camps . At the girls championship game both
NG and O' Hara
cheerleaders kept everyone entertained at halftime .
Also Mr. Pawlowski
said the students will have to adhere to a dress code
and guess that's
in reference to the bare chested, painted students of
which my son was
one I don't see the harm they didn't have anything
offensive or
derogatory . None of this led to what happened after the
game. As for
Ta'londa I never said that the girls from O'Hara should
be stripped of
their championship they deserved it ,she is the one that
suggested that
Neumann should be stripped of their championship. also
the game ended by
Neumann's basket but if she believes that DJ was wrong
to run over to
celebrate in front of Romans bench and student section
than O'Hara's
team and student section should have went to their end
of the court to
celebrate I doubt that; and if she bothered to read my
comments she
would have known that I said things were thrown at the
students from
O'Hara so i don't need her update. Her excuse that boys
basketball is
taken more seriously than girls is not a reason that
makes this
situation any less serious also she stated Scoop's dad
had no reason to
be upset for having anything thrown at him she didn't
deem this as
serious. Anyone throwing anything on the court from
Roman or Neumann at
either game should be disciplined not Coach Carl or DJ.
In closing I am
very disturbed by the actions of Mr. Pawlowski, he has
done more to kill
school spirit than anyone or anything that I can
remember in a long time
. I was hoping that for once the powers that be could be
fair to
NEUMANN -GORETTI what a joke !!!!!!!!!
thank you,
Al Howlett
(Ted's note: Thank you again, Al. I will take issue with one thing
here.
There's no way Dennis Seddon can be held responsible for
the actions
of Roman's fans, and I haven't heard/seen one indication
that his players
did anything wrong.)
----
Hello Mr. Al
Howlett. But of course I bothered to read your comments
no
offense but you attended NG over 3 decades ago- things
have changed. And
when you bothered to read my comments- which weren't
intended for
anyone, you stated; " By the way I wondered if Ta'Londa
thinks that her
school should be stripped of the title for the same
thing NG
players/students did" I gave my viewpoints on that. And
as far as the CL
Championship game, I was right there seeing it up close
and personal, is
WAY different from 10-15 rows away. As I said before he
was out of
control if you get hit with something, go get the proper
authorities to
handle it. Don't try to fight them. It was a student
that got hit in the
face with a glass bottle and was bleeding everywhere- he
didn't even
carry-on like that. You must've misunderstood- what I
was saying (
That's okay, it happens sometimes) I never said it makes
the situation
less serious. I feel that if Scoop's dad wouldn't have
been so busy
trying to taunt the Roman fans, and conducted himself
like an ADULT, he
wouldn't have got hit with anything. NOT saying that he
deserved it but
all the things that was going on he didn't think they
would hug and
congratulate him or did you?
And on to new things.....
Congrats to SJP and Roman for the hard work ACIT
tournament this past
weekend!
