APRIL 5
STATE PLAYOFF OVERVIEW
I know I haven't checked in in more than a month,
but I have been prepping for this during that time. It was supposed to be done
this time last week, but even I need a rest sometimes. This was a marker year
for the Pub and the 2-week long state tournament was a fun ride as two teams:
Communications Tech & Prep Charter made their way to Hershey with Prep Charter
still standing once the dust settled. In light of the sad events following the
Catholic League thriller & the clinker that was the Pub Final, the state
playoffs gave us all something to look forward to. I am happy to say that I saw
in person 14 Boys state games and about 4 girls games. It was an amazing
experience.
It all started on Friday, March 10 at Ben Franklin high
school with the mighty-mighty C-Tech, the new kids on the block, taking on Upper
Moreland. The Phoenix stumbled early, but their talents won over as they went on
to win by 20, 67-47. Since we're here, let's stay with the Phoenix. CT holds a
special place in city history as in the first year of the program's existence,
the Phoenix went onto the Pub Final and later to the State 3A Final. They lost
both Title tilts, but those feats can't be doubled and have set high standards
for Phoenix teams to come. I saw all 5 of their state playoff games and I'm
proud to say I was a part of the whole experience. The other results were:
Crestwood (XI), 63-52, Oxford (I), 69-53, West Perry (III), 66-60 & finally the
title loss to Franklin (X) 63-74. It was a fun ride that included trips to
Allentown (Parkland hs, probably the most beautiful hs facility in the state),
Reading (Reading hs, the most historical hs facility in the state) & Hershey's
Giant Center. The kids appreciate it and now understand it which could make for
even better future results. What was most refreshing about the whole ride, at
least hoops wise, was that the seniors PG Jernardo "Jay" Lucas & Swingman
Shawn Francis both carved out names for themselves and probably did
wonders for their recruitment. Both played the way seniors should in every
contest. Congrats to coach Lou Biester, the All-City Coach of the year,
for having an awesome year.
Ah now to the reigning AA State Champions Huskies of
Prep Charter. PC has a love-hate relationship with PL brass, but all along we
knew that they had the best shot of taking the whole sh-bang and they did so
dominant fashion smashing the defending champ Beaver Falls of far Western PA,
82-51. BF led at halftime, 29-27 behind their star, Maureece Rice clone
Lance Jeter. PC did their thing in half number two leaving the crowd in a
state of shock prompting many to say that they were the top team to take the
court all weekend in Hershey. This was great redemption for Coach Dan
Brinkley after taking a lot of flack for underachieving during the Pubs. His
team finally put it all together and they did so at the perfect time. The best
part of it all was the suicidal road taken to get there having to go on the road
from day one and beat tough District III teams like Reading CC, Trinity &
old-nemesis York Catholic, the team that took out the Huskies last year in
controversial fashion. Sr. Swing Rodney Green proved to be the best
player in the tournament and one of the state's best by dominating when he was
needed. Some people may think I'm crazy, but he reminds me so much of the
Bartram/CIAA/NBA great Earl "The Pearl" Monroe in the way he glides
around the court and make this intricate game look like checkers. His supporting
cast wasn't bad either as each and every other starter stepped up in the
playoffs. The four juniors should all play D-I ball as well one day. Stay
tuned...
There were other great stories during the states like
the great team effort of Coach C.M Brown's Engineers of E&S. They only
went 1-1, but should have much to build on next year when they move up to 3A
with a better team and more confidence. The backcourt of junior bookends
Tanner and Richardson have been together for 5 years (since middle
school) and they are improving with age... U-City took out Pennsbury before
falling to a tough Allentown Allen squad and their star Terrance Roderick
(The State's most underrated player, skills that rival Ellington, Henderson,
Green, ect.)! UC's stars PG Aaron Stephens & SF Kenny Moore have
nothing to hang their heads about. They went out winners despite a long
season... Then finally there was Imhotep Charter who continues to build a strong
program behind its leader Bro' Andre Noble. They'll only get better with
time...
My state playoff experience was GREAT! It was a long
season, but I can only look forward to the next go round, as the trail rolls
on...
FEB. 28
AA CONSOLATION
E&S 51, Prep Charter 46
This may have been the strangest occurrence I've
seen all year. The Engineers went into the home of the Huskies and stole a HUGE
victory especially in the state scope of things. (More on that later...) They
did it by hanging around early on then taking control down the stretch and
finally holding on late. They deserve to be commended even though they shot a
mere 16-for-30 from the free throw line. Sr. F Glenn Dickerson (13 points,
8 boards) & jr. PG Jaret Richardson (15 points, 4 assists, 3 steals) were
the main culprits. Now to PC, what's wrong with the mighty Huskies? I hope that
whatever it is can be fixed in the next week-and-a-half before state play. Sr.
WG Rodney Green (17P, 4S) was the only one that gave his all, but he
battled game-long foul trouble. It would be a crying shame if PC doesn't make a
strong/long run into the state tournament as this is indeed their year on paper.
Stay tuned...
AA's Notes: E&S, by winning this game, avoided having to go into
District III and face either Reading Central Catholic or Delone Catholic (York,
PA) in the first round. They'll face a much weaker foe from District One. Prep
now has the distinction of going into the Lions den. They already hold a W over
Trinity, but dropped a tough one to YC in last year's state second round. This
should make for an interesting development...
FEB. 25
SEMI-FINAL/AAAA FINAL
Gratz 66, U-City 45
The final score here doesn't indicate the
competitiveness of this one. In fact, UC controlled the 1st half (though the
halftime score was 27-all) and was only down 4 going into the 4th quarter. Gratz
won this one because of strong play from their bench and the steadiness of
handyman sr. SF Sean Gilbert (10P, 10R, 3S). You see while UC was doing
their thing, Sean (a former Jag himself) was the one Bulldog who never got
rattled. In fact, as the 2nd quarter began, he was the only starter left on the
floor as the others needed to settle down and he was the only Bulldog to go all
32. The backcourt of sr. Malik Alvin & soph. Velton Jones started
slow, but settled down and both had great 4th quarters (Gratz won that stanza
23-6). Alvin finished with 19 points, 6 boards, 5 assists & 5 steals. Jones had
13P, 3A & 3S. Jr. SF Tommy "T.J." Sykes led the bench mob with 10 points
(3-for-3, 4-of-5) & 5 boards. Sykes also played great D on UC's 6-6 super soph.
SF Kenny Moore who had looked early on like he was about to go berzerk.
Moore finished with 16 points (4 treys) & 6 boards. Sr. WG Charles McKissick
had the exact same numbers. The difference here was CONDITIONING (a word that
has become synonymous with Gratz in the last 25 years). It seemed that as Gratz
was fresher than fresh to start the 4th, UC was dragging and well that's what
caused the 4th quarter barrage.
AA's Notes: The development of Moore is starting to get scary.
He's now up to 6-6 (and still growing) and he does something more impressive
than the last time you saw him every time he takes the floor. If he stays on
course, he could easily become one of (if not the best) best athlete's in UC's
history. Remember, he shares the same kind of potential as a QB on the football
team... As myself and colleague Jon "Duck" Gray both agreed upon, Gratz
and C-Tech both have structured their teams towards how every Pub team should.
In this Pub, you just have to play 8-9 guys over the course of the season. You
MUST keep guys fresh and ready to contribute as you never know when you'll need
them. Especially, with the constant running and athleticism of the League. This
may have been a huge reason for FLC's premature departure. The kids may have
been burnt out after logging so many minutes. It may sound subtle, but its one
of those tuings that goes a long way toward having greater success...
FEB. 19
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SOUTH
St. Joseph's Prep 56, Roman Catholic 49
This was a huge win for the Prep's confidence going
into the playoffs knocking off the mighty Cahillites of Roman Catholic. Roman
came out flat and the Prep came out pretty sharp and that'll basically tell the
story as well all know that coming out flat against the Prep is dangerous to
your health. They aren't exactly the easiest team to come back from behind on.
Prep was led by Sr. G-F Reggie Redding with 14 points (6-for-9), 7 boards
& 4 assists. Sr. F Matt McCauley chipped in with 10P on 5-for-6 as well.
Soph. PF Larry Loughery (12P, 7R, 4B) & jr. PG Matt Griffin (13P,
3A) were also heavy contributors. At one point, the Prep was up 19 (38-19
shortly into the 3rd period). Roman did make a comeback late and cut it to 3
52-49, but would get no closer. Jr. WG Bradley Wanamaker, the CL's most
explosive player, went for a game high 18 points while battling long term foul
woes. Sr. Fs Mike Ringgold (11P, 11R, 3S) & Rockeed McCarter (11P,
12R, 3B) both battled inside throughout. Sr. PG Ray "Doodles" Sims went
for 9P, 6A, 4S as he fought game long.
AA's Notes: Big win for the Prep as they prove that they can win a
big game in the CL his year. Not a bad loss for Roman but, you don't want to go
into the playoffs on a bad note. Roman draws Bonner Sunday night while the Prep
has Neumann-Goretti on the horizon...
FEB. 17
CATHOLIC LEAGUE NORTH
Father Judge 76, Conwell-Egan 75 2OT
This one was surely one of the top 5 high school
games that I've seen all year! What made it better was that this was my first
look at both squads this season. I haven't seen as many CL games this year as
I've done more venturing to the 'Burbs to check out District I and beyond for
scouting service purposes, but this one was a treat. Both teams played a high
level of basketball and you just can't ask for more than that. Judge was led by
one of my sleepers sr. CG James "J.J" Franklin (27P, 5A, 3S). This kid id
the "AI" of the CL North. He's both extremely quick and ditto fearless. Plus
he's a clutch player. Its amazing how much he's improved from last summer to
now. Its to the point that the D-IIs should be banging down his door. Sure he
still has some work to do on becoming a solid PG, but the foundation is there.
He made 3 crucial buckets in the second OT period, the last being a driving
bucket with :06.7 to make the final score. 6-4 sr. SF Jim Schule scored
15 points (7 coming in OT #1). 6-5 sr. PF-C Arthur Livingston had a solid
outing with 10P, 8R & 4A. He also could help a D-II program. I really like CEC's
program and where its going. Unfortunately, their top 3 players are seniors, but
there are some solid underclassmen that could flank them and what's good for
them is that the Northern division is senior heavy. The cream of the crop is PG
Adam Van Zelst, who just might be the most underrated player in the whole
CL. Adam went for 30 points (5 treys) & dished 3 assists. He, too made big shot
after bog shot. What I like is his sustained confidence and toughness. No one is
chumpin' him. In fact, at times he might be the bully. HOLY FAMILY ALERT! Adam
has some of the same gifts that current injured PG Chris Kozole (Ryan)
had. Give him a shot. His twin Ryan isn't much worse. He's more of a
distributing PG as he dished 10 assists. He did have 9 points and all 4 of his
buckets were huge. Sr. WG Wilson Acevedo (17P, 6R, 3S) is the third wheel
and not a bad one I might add. He also plays with much flavor.
AA's Notes: This was the night that the Judge administration
dedicated their gym to longtime coach (The CL's all-time winner) Bill Fox.
The new name of Judge's gym is Bill Fox Gym. Its fitting as coach Fox is
one of the more respected high school coaches in America. I'd love for him to
teach hoops to my boys (when I have them). You'd know that they were learning it
the right way and that for sure... Egan has some good-looking youngsters in
their program and will be a force in the near future...
FEB. 17
QUARTER-FINAL/AAAA SEMI-FINAL
Gratz 73, Southern 44
This one was good for a half, but the Rams were
very disappointing after halftime and just never matched the Bulldogs' intensity
as the lead swelled from 5 to 15 to the final 29. The boys from SP actually went
to the extreme of quitting in the end and that's never been a mark of the always
brassy South Philly brand of ball. It was a shame to watch. Well anyway, the
Bulldogs were pretty darn good being led by their star-studded backcourt of sr.
G Malik Alvin & so. PG Velton Jones. Alvin was simply sensational
doing just about whatever he wanted from buzzer to buzzer. He scored 20 of his
24 points in the first half while dishing 7 of his 8 assists in the 2nd. He also
snatched 9 boards, stole 3 & swatted 2. He looked on a mission as Gratz plans to
carry out their three-part plan (District-Pub-States). Jones (18P, 4 each of Rs,
As & Ss) is one of my favorite players in the city. He's oh-so-confident/clever
and ditto efficient. He's also a shut down defender and that's been the mark of
almost EVERY good Gratz guard since I can remember. Sr. F Sean Gilbert
also came through huge with 7P & 11R. Southern got solid contributions from
seniors F Bryheem Charity (9P, 8R) & F Jason Sabb (14P, 11R, 2B),
but no one else truly deserves mention.
AA's Notes: I felt bad afterwards for Ram coach George Anderson.
He was animated throughout and really wanted to win, but his kids just didn't
have the same fight... There was a buzz around the gym afterwards about CT's
shocker over Prep Charter. I wasn't shocked, CT has a very good group and they
play without fear. The Pub playoffs never cease to amaze me as the trail goes
on...
FEB. 16
QUARTER-FINAL/AAAA SEMI-FINAL
University City 58, Edison 43
Not the prettiest of games, but neither of these
squads ever wrote the book on doing things with finesse. UC & Edison have long
over the years been two of the grimier programs in the Pub so I knew what I was
getting into going to here and I was actually happy to watch. UC won this one by
making adjustments and getting out of the Edison shooters (primarily dangerous
so. WG George Baker). This was a great group effort by the Jags led by
sr. PG Aaron Stephens, sr. WG Charles McKissick & jr./so. WG-SF
Kenny Moore. Stephens was his usual maestro self with a line of: 6P, 4R, 5A,
2S. There are plenty of D-IIIs courting him, but I think the State schools
should begin to start showing him some love. He could be very effective at that
level as well. McKissick may have been the difference maker as he went for 11
points, 9 boards & 5 assists. It seemed that most of his work made for big plays
in the second half. I think that he could help a D-III program as well as he's a
good long range shooter and tough defender. Moore has a chance to be special in
time. He's 6-5 and growing, does a lot of things well and has a natural feel for
the game (more on that in my notes...). Today (off the bench) he went for 17
points (6-for-8 down the stretch at the line), 9 boards, 4 assists & 3 steals.
His progress bares watching especially if the PIAA grants him an extra year of
eligibility in 2007-08. Edison is a 6-5 insider away from doing the Pub some
serious damage over the next few years. They have a bunch of guys in the 5-10 to
6-1 range who play the game as hard as they possibly can. Its a joy to watch.
Baker played very well, but couldn't get it going in the second half. He did
finish with 16 points (6-for-17, 2 treys, 2-of-5), 7 boards, 4 assists & 6
steals. There aren't many young kids that play this hard around the Pub. The
only other that comes to mind is CT's Andrew Randall. Maybe Bodine's
Lamar Jackson or Gratz' Velton Jones, but it stops there. It'll be a
joy to watch him for the next two seasons though I'll probably see him twice
more as Edison has a consolation to play plus at least one state playoff to
play. His sophomore partner SF Eric Jones (He's no bigger than 5-10, but
jumps out the gym & rebounds with anyone) went for 12 points (2 treys) & 7
boards.
AA's Notes: The Jags deserved to be commended for playing arguably
the toughest schedule in the Pub. They've been upstate 3 times and to Chicago.
They lost 9 out of 10 NL Games, but they are standing tall now and that's all
that matters. They are extremely battle-tested and ready for the challenges
ahead... Moore's pedigree is UNREAL. His mom played D-I Ball. His grand-father
played D-I ball and in the NBA. His brother is currently playing at Pittsburgh
and his uncles have played D-I ball and pro ball overseas. Needless to say, the
kid is destined to be successful and will be if he continues to develop at this
rate... Its great to see how the Edison community has embraced Baker. He's
already a hero and could be a cult hero as a senior. Its going to be a fun
ride...
FEB. 15
ROUND OF 16/AAA FINAL
Communications Tech 75, Strawberry Mansion 69
Oh what a game this was! CT avenged its loss from 2
weeks ago with a huge W over the Knights. It wasn't easy either, but this
Phoenix club seems to be on a mission to do some special things. Sr. WG Ben
Whitt (6-2 190) was the hero here. He went for 20 points (4 treys) and also
made 4-for-4 at the line during the stretch run which was a key because he
missed both ends of a double bonus that would have put the Knights away in their
first meeting. Whitt is a sniper supreme (definitely the Pub if not the city's
best). To date, he has nailed 55 treys this season off the Phoenix bench. I
could see his recruitment sky-rocket this Spring. many coaches always tell me
that you can never pass on a great shooter. So. F Andrew "Scootie" Randall
seemed to be 2 different players in this one. In the first half, he was merely
Andrew, but in the 2nd Scootie showed up scoring 16 of his 18 points. He also
grabbed 13 boards & blocked 4 shots. You have to love this youngster's approach.
In the first half, he tired to get it done from the outside and even blew some
chippies inside. He struggled mightily, but as the second half started he scored
off the give and go & the pick and roll. Textbook stuff. You just don't see many
young kids get it like that anymore. This kid understands the value of playing
hard (something he does 100% of the time) and knows the fundamentals of the
game. That is why many consider him the #1 Soph. in the City and quite possibly
#2 in the Area behind the Great Tyreke Evans of American Christian School
in Aston, PA. Sr. PG Jernardo "Jay" Lucas scored 12 & plucked 3. Juniors:
G Najee Edwards (6R, 6A) & F Shyheem Satchell (10P) were heavy
contributors off the bench. The Mansion banner was carried by super 6th man sr.
WG Eugene Moss (25P, 11R, 3A). Moss looked like the player we all
envisioned 4 years ago and has looked that way for the last few weeks. He's
long, athletic and can shoot it from DEEP! He's simply an offensive terror. With
Prep or JC years & sustained focus, watch as you could see him on TV one day.
Sr. G Matthew "Moo" Johnson ended his career with a bang going for 18, 5
& 4. Sr. PG Stan Williams also made a nice ending impression with 11P
(2-for-2 on 3s) & 2S. Sr. PF John Brooks policed his way to 7P & 9R.
AA's Notes: Next in the wings for CT is the mighty Prep Charter on
the road. Don't get me started on that. We'll truly see what the Phoenix are
made of on Friday afternoon... The Knights will now rebuild while moving down to
AA next year. That should be interesting. Can you imagine what Mr. Maureece
Rice would have done at the double or triple A level. He'd have over 3000
points if the Pub were in the PIAA those days and he may even have a few state
titles under his belt. Just think, they would have been a threat to win AAA each
year Rice was a Knight...
FEB. 14
ROUND OF 16/AA SEMI-FINAL
Engineering & Science 61, Franklin Learning Center 36
No, you don't need your eyes checked. E&S did
clobber FLC on their home floor and no the great Lynn Greer did not suit
up either. Nor did Mike Anderson, Will Chavis or John Cox. This
group of Engineers is not filled with household named players, but they do have
three very distinguished coaches in the Law firm of Brown, Hamilton &
Yankowitz. This is not the most talented group of Engineers (they are
talented though), but they play harder than hard and smarter than smart. That
coupled with the fact that the Bobcats saved their worst performance of the year
for their most important game were all contributing factors to the drubbing. The
Engineer leaders were the bookend junior backcourt of Jaret Richardson
(22P - 11-of-14 at the line, 3S) & Sandy Tanner (8A, 3S). These guys
cause people fits with their relentless D and their smart play on O and IMO are
quite the underrated backcourt. They've been playing together since middle
school and it shows. Undersized insiders/warriors (both 6-2 give or take) sr.
Glenn Dickerson & jr. Darrell Mills were also huge factors. Dickerson
scored 14 points & claimed 8 boards while Mills scored 10 points & snatched a
game high 13 boards (he missed a long stretch of roughly 10 minutes due to foul
woes). Both guys made big play after big play and both guys were effective in
using their derrieres to box out. The Bobcats REALLY struggled here. Star PG
Malcolm Eleby (10P on 3-for-17 shooting) had a afternoon he won't soon
forget. I think he'll learn a lot from it though. He MUST learn to trust his
teammates. I know that they are green, but they have come through on many
occasions this season. Most will be back for the Bobcats, and they will be a
HUGE force, next season. Eleby's an extremely hard worker so I suspect that this
will weigh on him until he takes the court for the Bobcats again next December.
AA's Notes: I loved the fight of so. PG Kyle Sawyer. He's going to
be a good one down the road. He's small at 5-9 (at the most), but he wears a
size 14 shoe and coach Cedric Powell told me that he now has added the
dunk to his arsenal... It was great having a pre-game talk with coach C.M.
Brown. He reminded me a few times to make sure I ask his long time friend
Charlie Sumter how hard he threw as a baseball pitcher. he said that no one
believes him ever when he tells them. I won't forget. His Engineers are good
now, but will only be better next year. They have 5 good juniors, 2 tall/good
freshman and a sophomore who goes about 6-7 (and growing) who has missed this
season with with injuries. Plus they have great coaches as I stated earlier.
Things will only get better a summer of growth and development...
FEB. 9
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. B
Edison 71, Fels 63
This was a pretty pleasant experience for whatever
that's worth. In the past, Fels wasn't one of my favorite stops on the trail for
one reason or another and this year's Fels squad has no Dionte Christmas'
if you know what I mean so... However, this one was pretty entertaining and
everything went smoothly to boot. Edison is one of the more entertaining squads
that you are going to see in the Pub. No rotation member is bigger than 6-2 (And
one of the 6-2 guys is the PG). With that being said, they get after it like no
one else and make up for their lack of verticality with much heart and desire.
They will be a dangerous out in the playoffs especially with home court
advantage through 2 rounds. Sophomore WG George Baker has been their
unquestioned leader throughout the season and that was no different here as he
went for 27 points (11-for-24, 3 treys). He also snatched 6 and dished 3. He's
the typical cross-town North Philly kind of player. He plays for KEEPS. Right
now his best offensive weapon is the deadly set shot from deep, but he is strong
going to the hole as well with both hands as he possesses excellent body control
(very strong upper body). If he keeps up the good work, he'll be recognized as
one of the top players in school history which is a great feat considering. The
6-2 PG is junior Daniel Johnson (6P, 9A, 2S) and he is very intriguing.
He seems to have grown since I saw him in December. He's very long/rangy and
loves to hit the open man. He is penetrate and kick personified. I bet there is
not a soul that doesn't enjoy playing with him. Sr. CG Fabian Pena came
off the bench to snipe 4 treys in 4 tries en route to 13 points. The rest of the
Owls aren't all that skilled, but they give you loads of effort and timely
plays. Fels was led by sr. WG Desmond Robinson (17 points), a lefty & jr.
CG Antoin "A.J" Harper (14P, 3A). The team as a whole deserves to be
commended for their effort in this "meaningless game." They played Edison tough
until the very end.
AA's Notes: This Edison team could be quite dangerous next week in
the playoffs and even better next year. Their two most important pieces return
as does another in active soph. WG Eric Jones. They could be deep into
the mix again. Coach Kevin Reilly does a pretty nice job though I'd like
to see him do more with them in terms of non-league games. I even would like to
help him locate a tip-off and Christmas Tournament and also get him in a
showcase upstate if he's interested...
FEB. 7
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. B
Communications Tech 65, Washington 51
I went into this one thinking, hey this could be
good. It'll probably decide who wins Division B and GW is at home so they should
be competitive. Boy was I wrong. At the end of 3 quarters, the score read 52-25,
CT and after 6-5 205-lb so. SF Andrew "Scootie" Randall's monster (and I
mean monster) two-handed slam early in the 4th, the score said 62-30. The Eagles
scrambled from there to make things look close, but the Phoenix were truly
dominant and business-like. It started with Randall who went for 16 points, 11
boards, 3 assists & 4 blocks. "Scootie" does many things well, but the one thing
that I like the most is his approach. He simply plays the right way: hard, smart
& to win. He truly is the City's best sophomore prospect and I can only see him
getting better. Sr. PG Jernardo "Jay" Lucas was also on top of his game
going for 14 points, 9 boards & 5 assists. The strong lefty is another
hard-nosed player who does what it takes for his team to win. The third wheel is
sr. WG Ben Whitt (13 points - 3 treys), who serves as the team's 6th man,
but is a sniper supreme. He is a dagger thrower and just might be the key to the
team. Other solid bench contribution came from large 6-5 260-lb so. C Manny
Jordan (6P, 4R, throwing around of the large body) & jr. G Najee Edwards
(4R, 6A). GW's best contribution came from sr. PF Frank Peters (8P, 10R).
The bench also brought late energy, but it was a bit too late.
AA's Notes: CT looks refocused after losing to Mansion last week.
A win over Penn assures them two home playoff games next week more than likely
against Bok & a rematch with Mansion before a possible Thursday meeting with
Prep Charter (which could be the game of the year in the Pub if everything
holds to form)... GW is in the middle of the Div. B tailspin that I just can't
explain. Everything will explain itself on Thursday, phew... It was good to see
freshman 6-3 SF Will McFillin added to the G-Dub Varsity. Many say he's
the best shooter in the building and that he could also be a starter at QB next
year in FB...
FEB. 6
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. C
Masterman 55, Nueva Esperanza 32
Its never a bad experience going over to 17th and
Spring Garden. There is always good fan support and coach John Gannon
always has a glowing story to tell about one of his kids. Today the story was
about sr. PG Mike Mack (14P, 4A, 5S). Mack is a quick-ster and a slick-ster.
He can really get from spot to spot without being bothered by a defender and he
owns a 1250 on the SAT. All of the academic IIIs should be banging down his door
as he owns a consummate combination: tough inner-city kid with
game/grades/character. You just can't beat that. Lehigh signee 6-6 F Zahir
Carrington pretty much did what he wanted in going for 19 points (3 dunks),
8 boards & 8 blocks. He made some authorative moves on the go too and that will
make him a tough cover especially at the next level. The most impressive were
his rebound and coast to coast pushing for a slam & my favorite, his catch on
the wing and stop and pop from 15'. Jr. WG Mickey McGuire is the third
leg on the 3-headed Blue Dragon. He is almost automatic when left open and with
set feet. He drained 5 Js (4 treys) en route to 14 points while also dishing 5
and plucking 3. So. F Jordan Perkins aided the cause with 13 boards. He
truly has a knack for that skill and although he's undersized, he could become
very good at that against anyone in time. Speaking of undersized: The last few
weeks I've heard more than a few sparkling reports about tiny freshman PG
Andy Bousono (12 points, 4 steals). Guess what, the sub 5-footer can go!
He'll follow in the line of talented/exciting Hispanic guards like Angel "Fuey"
Gonzalez & Baltazar Feliciano. Right now, he's a shade more similar
to "Fuey." He's very heady and also very deadly from deep. He would have had
double figure assists if guys would have caught his passes and/or finished them.
He's surely on my radar. I'd bet that down the road he'll be one of those guys
that I'd actually pay to watch. I also like so. CG Charles Campbell (13P,
11R, 4S). He handled much of the PG duties here and didn't do a bad job. He's
not the most talented or the most athletic, but no one on the floor today played
or competed harder and that's more than half the battle.
AA's Notes: Coach Gannon also said that Masterman's male enrollment has
grown and that they would be moving up to AA. Its good to hear that Masterman's
enrollment is going up. That only means that there are more smart kids.
Masterman was only rated the #2 academic Public school in the entire region last
fall by Philadelphia magazine (Lower Merion was #1). That's some serious
stuff... Recently, Carrington went over the 1000-point plateau. He's only the
fourth player in school history to do so...

PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. A
Southern 85, Overbrook 60
Note to the Rest of the PUB: Use what Southern
High's basketball team did this season as a blueprint. Play the toughest
possible Non-League schedule that you can play at watch it pay dividends during
league play. Coach George Anderson took some tough ones in December and
now he looks like genius. Yesterday his squad was spirited and business-like as
the Rams throttled Overbrook going away. At one point in the third, the score
was only 47-44 and at the end of the third 51-44. Southern won the 4th by a
34-16 clip and now look to be a stronghold in claiming a first round home
playoff game in the playoffs. Their stars were their big three: sr. SF Jason
Sabb, jr. WG-SF Ramone Moore & sr. PF Bryheem Charity. Sabb
started off fast with 17 of his 21 in the first half. He also snatched 8 boards,
dished 5 assists & plucked 5 steals. His ball skills have truly improved as has
his range on jumpers as he fittingly nailed two 17' base-line jumpers (He is Mr.
Baseline himself...). JCs far and wide should be coming for his services as he
now has the look of a player that could become a 2G at the next level and with
his explosiveness could be a stud after two years of growth at a JC. Moore is
the top overall Ram and seems to even be their silent leader. They feed off of
his actions on the court. He is a very skilled player who will only get better
as he continues to grow and fill out. He even looks a shade taller than his
listed height of 6-4. Today, he went for 27 points (17 in the 4th, 12-for-12 at
the line), 5 boards, 6 assists & 5 steals. Charity missed many shots in tight,
but battled his way to 13 points & 9 boards while hustling for 7 steals. Sr. WG
Dan Weatherly (9P, 4R, 3A), a sweet-shooting lefty, also played well.
'Brook's top player and IMO today's best player on the floor was freshman
sensation WG Nurideen Lindsey (19P, 3A, 4S). The last freshman in the Pub
that I saw this poised, this hard to check and this vocal was a prodigy named
Rice. He already stands 6-2 and seems never rattled. He's also already a
renowned transition terror who was born with the tricks of the trade. I'll gush
more about him in my notes... Sr. C Naftalie "Tallie" Ellis had another
beastly effort with 14 points & 15 boards. Jr. 6th man G Maurice "Mo-T"
Townsend was their 3rd best option, but kind of got lost in the second half.
He owns one of the sweetest strokes (Picture perfect form + high release point)
that you'll ever see and should never be left anything close to open as he's
darn near automatic. The Panther woes lied in that they were guilty of 32
turnovers by my count with 21 coming after halftime and you just can't win that
way.
AA's Notes: I want to again commend Mr. Anderson for playing such
a tough schedule in preparing his team for what's to come. They could give
someone a battle if they make the state playoffs... Ellis says that he is down
to two I-A schools: West Virginia & Minnesota. He hopes to make a decision by
the end of next week and is just waiting on recent SAT scores. That would be
great for the Pub if he goes to one of those places... Now to Lindsey: There
have been transfer rumors swirling about him and here's my thinking: He should
stay just where he's at! Why go somewhere else and be second, third, maybe even
fourth fiddle when he's already the man just where he's at. This kid could not
only be the king of the Hill-Top, but the entire Pub could be his one day. He's
that good. I hope he takes heed and makes my vision turn into reality...
JAN. 30
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SOUTH
O'Hara 54, West Catholic 38
I joked with Huck as this one wound down that I was
going to regret relieving him of his website report duties after watching this
one. I was just joking as this wasn't that bad of a game. Both teams played hard
and are well-coached so it made for a pretty good game actually. The Lions
played very unselfishly and executed legendary coach Bud Gardler's
offense to perfection assisting 18 times on their 19 baskets (shot 50% for the
game). Their top player was sr. F Pat Kirby who is as efficient a player
as you'll see. We went for 21 points (9-for-14), 7 boards & 4 steals. He always
plays within himself and makes some athletics plays. He could be a D-III star
one day because of his scoring knack, but D-II isn't out of the realm of
possibility either. He has the always even temperament that I just love too. Sr.
PG Chris Meyers (8) & sr. CG Anthony Walters (7) led in the
assisting. Walters also had solid other numbers with: 9P, 5R, 3S. I truly
believe that if he just concentrated on hoops that he'd be a scholarship
(probably D-II) player in this sport as well. He does MANY things well
especially defend. 6-6 soph. C Marc Wedderburn (9P, 4R, 3B) did the grunt
work inside. Soph. WG Zack Tansey also looked good. It didn't show in the
numbers, but I just love his court demeanor. Plus he's got good size (6-3) and
athleticism. To add to that, he's already thought to be a deadly long range
sniper. This has been a tough year for the Burrs. Being frank, this is the least
talented team that I've seen coach Bill Ludlow with and I saw each and
every one of his teams since '94. However, as is coach Ludlow's trademark they
do play tough man to man D and get after as hard as anyone. Their best player
sr. WG Chris Mayo had an off night only taking 6 shots and scoring
9 points. He did dish 3 and pluck 5, but I'm sure he has the green light to
hoist up more than 6 shots. I like the feisty-ness of freshman PG Rob
Holloman (7P, 5A, 2S). The rookie did battle with the seasoned vet (Meyers)
and more than held his own. Sr. F John Maddox (West Virginia -FB) grabbed
a game high 9 boards.
AA's Notes: I am saddened by what I saw at West tonight. As an
alum, I am very concerned. West is one of the more attractive schools in the
CITY & AREA period, but it seems that as football continues to improve (which is
great), hoops and every other sport outside of girls track seems to be going
down, some way down. I hope I'm wrong, but things don't look to be getting
better either. Again, I hope I'm just over-reacting. I know that there are many
issues in-house (grades/conduct) that I won't go into here, but things just seem
overall frustrating... O'Hara looks poised to get that 4th playoff spot. A HUGE
tilt with Bonner looms... Finally, I was even more saddened to find out that one
of my favorite teachers during my time at West, Mr. Tom McPherson had
passed away of some form of cancer last week. Mr. McPherson was my English
teacher in 10th and 12th grade and he had a huge impact on the person that I am
today. He challenged all of his students to be "GENIUSES." I took that challenge
to heart. Some over the years probably didn't understand what his unconventional
methods stood for, but I always did and always took his challenges. I even used
to make my way to sit in on his classes sometimes up until about 2 years ago.
I'll always miss him and be thankful to the impact that he had on my life...

PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. A
Central 66, King 63
This was intense a contest that you'll see. There
were serious playoff implications here as King gave the lancers their best shot
at home before falling by three. The Golden Cougars had to win this one in order
to stay alive for the playoffs and they almost pulled it out in the most hostile
environment in the Pub. The Lancer seniors once again stepped up and secured the
huge W. Sr. PG Rashiid Coleman & sr. WG Kenny St. George both
played big in continuing their roll toward the playoffs. Coleman made big plays
down the stretch including the shot to put Central ahead with 18 tics remaining
and the free throw to ice the game with 8.9. His finishing line included 13
points, 6 assists & 3 steals. St. George (one of the better unsigned guard
prospects in the entire NE Region), who spent a lot of time on the floor, score
22 points (15-for-17) at the line to go along with 9 boards & 5 assists.
Sophomores: 6-4 PF Acquil Cook (12P, 6R) & SF Joffrey Glynn (8R,
3A) were also big factors. For King, this was the coming out party for 6-4 sr.
SF Dwayne Bradley (19P, 5R, 2B). The lefty is still a bit awkward, but
he's very effective slashing to the hole and he's also one of the better
athletes in the city. His brother played D-I ball, but he's not quite that
level. I don't see why the IIs shouldn't step in on him and the IIIs should
really be on him. Coach Harry Wood says he's the best student on the team
and that he's academically qualified. Sr. WG Darnell Moore was again his
smooth self with 18 points and 7 boards. Though he missed a lot here, he has a
pretty good stroke even off the dribble with range. He too is said to be a solid
student who should qualify. I feel he's a lock for one of the D-II state
schools. 6-4 sr. point forward Zane Oxley (also a solid student/citizen)
had a tough afternoon. He kind of got caught in the environment.
AA's Notes: My annual trip to Lancer-ville was once again appreciated.
This was as intense as a game can be and the Lancers have truly improved as the
year has gone on... It was great to have a post game talk to some of the Lancer
parents. They truly get it. I just wish the other schools parents always did the
same... King has a VERY talented team (even playoff worth), but has never really
put it together. The biggest blame has to come from a lack of Non-League games.
They give you cohesion and prepare you for what's to come. Only playing 5 out of
a possible 10 is unacceptable especially if you want to be successful. D-IIs &
IIIs need to get out and check their three respectable seniors out as all are
said to be very good students and all could easily help many programs...
Referees: Tim Tirabaso & Russ McCullough should be commended for
letting the kids play. I just wish every official let the games be played like
this...
JAN. 26
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. A
Gratz 55, U-City 43
This was the dog fight that I expected. UC has long
been one of the Pub's toughest outs on their home floor as the Bulldogs found
out here. Luckily the Bulldogs have what's probably the best backcourt in the
Public League in sr. UTEP signee Malik Alvin & soph. Velton Jones.
Alvin and Jones combined to nail 11-for-12 from the line late in the 4th to seal
the deal. Alvin struggled with his shot, but still went for 15 points, while
grabbing 12 boards & dishing 3 assists. Jones went for 18 points & 4 steals. The
emerging third option has been jr. F Ishmawiyl McFadden (6P, 9R, 4B). He
knows how to score in the post and has become a VERY good offensive rebounder.
His natural position is probably SF, but doing grunt work will be a great skill
for him to develop even for down the road purposes. Subs: jr. F Tommy "T.J."
Sykes, sr. SF Raheem Sanders & sr. WG Steve Newton all played
important roles as well. The Jags were led by one of the city's better young
players in 6-5 WG-SF Kenny Moore (14P, 6R, 4S). He's listed as a
sophomore, but has junior eligibility for now so down the road he'll need to go
before the PIAA to earn an extra year of eligibility. Stay tuned... Sr. SF
Khalil "June" Bookard made big shot after big shot down the stretch scoring
8 of his 13 in the 4th. Sr. PG Aaron Stephens was his normal whirlwind
self with 8P, 6R, 5A, 2S.
AA's Notes: The Bulldogs looked primed to earn themselves two home
playoff games which goes a long way in the scope of things. Their date this
weekend with undefeated/Nationally ranked Harrisburg should give them a good
gauge on where they stand in the state playoff picture... UC still has business
to take care of to even secure a berth. They are always tough this time of year
so bets are on that they'll take care of business...

PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. A
West 79, Parkway 50
This wasn't much of a game so I won't say much.
West played great and Parkway looked a shade over-matched. West only dressed 8
players for assorted reasons, but this may have been their best effort of the
year and their top dog 6-7 jr. C Wayne Johnson was not in attendance. I
will say this: I hope that this program gets its self all the way together for
everyone's sake involved. There are some good/talented kids there and they
deserve better than what's been going on... I like Parkway's backcourt of srs.
PG John Howard & WG Tyrone Palmer. Both went for 14 points plus
did other things. Both could help the D-IIIs and I'm sure that both are good
students...
JAN. 19
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. A
King 81, Bartram 63
Boy I wish this was 3-4 years ago. If it were then,
I would have saw a marquee match-up with two of the top teams in the Pub ready
to dual. Its not so anymore as both of these clubs hot streaks have cooled off.
The players are new, the coaches are new and the fanfare is now slightly
diluted. Well anyway, King does have some talent -- a lot of it must say which
unfortunately makes me wonder... This team should be a lot better than its
record states. Today they jumped on the young Braves early sending all twelve
players in uniform into the game before halftime (they led 43-24 by then). The
best Cougar is 6-3 sr. WG Darnell Moore (6-for-12, 7-of-7 - 19 points, 6
boards, 3 assists & 5 steals). Moore is not a great long range shooter, but he
is a very good mid ranger and he knows how to get to the spots he likes. He also
makes the right plays most of the time. He's a hot name amongst the state
schools and should wind up at one of them. 6-4 sr. WG-SF Zane Oxley (12P,
5R, 3A, 3S) has many of the same skills except he's a a better athlete with
deeper range (not nearly as poised though). He is said to have had battles with
consistency, but from what I see he too should be on the PSAC radar. Why? He's
an athletic 6-4 kid who can both play and defend three different spots: 1, 2 &
3. Both are said to be solid student. Sr. PF Marquis "Diesel" Clarke, a
lefty, also made a large contribution going 7-for-7 & 2-of-2 for 16 points. He
also snatched 5 boards. The FB ace is this team's enforcer. He showed his
athleticism by catching right underneath the hoop and going straight up for a
two-handed slam. Jr. WG Marcus McQueen came off the bench to drop 12
points. Sr. WG Frank Savage (3 treys) had 9. The Braves are very
inexperienced, but they played hard from whistle to whistle and you just can't
say enough about that. They were good sportsmen and fought hard for the name on
the front of their jerseys that's to be commended. It'll pay huge dividends in
time. Sr. CG Antwine "Dunk" Tucker (23 points) is one of the last men
standing from the old regime. He played with a lot of heart here as he tries to
lead and keep his young/inexperienced (some both) 'mates in perspective. I
REALLY like sr. SF Winston Robinson (16P, 10R, 5A, 6S). I just wished
that he were a junior instead of a senior because that would make his
circumstances so much different. Wins' has an unmatched motor to go along with
big time athleticism. Sure he's a bit wild at times, but all that would take is
a year's worth of fine tuning. His high-flying slam in traffic was easily the
most athletic play of the game as it came from nowhere! For now, the IIIs should
be hunting after him hard as he could thrive once he learns the nuances of the
game. Two sophomore lefties will carry the banner for the years to come. They
are 6-5 SF Novar Gadson (team's top overall prospect) & tiny, but feisty
PG Mike Edmondson (6P, 3 each of R, A & S). Gadson is a smooth, cool
customer. He will have to tone down the hot-dog act, but other than that I like
his chances. No one on the court competed harder than Edmondson (not even
Robinson). He truly only goes about 5-5 125, but has the heart of the lion and
is a leader even now. Methinks that he'll be a Pub crowd favorite in time.
AA's Notes: King's gym looks simply fabulous. It has a new floor,
new stands, new scorers table, new clock, ect. I told AD Margie Stinson
that now its times to have some events there. She says that next year she hopes
to rekindle the Christmas Tourney and I'd love to help her... The Cougars have
too much talent to not be near the top of the division. They could still play
spoiler to somebody. Anyone that sees them better not take them lightly because
their dangerous... I'm confident that the Braves will be back to their old form
in the near future. You gotta love the love that coach Brett Olsen is putting
into this young group. He's teaching them to fight until the end and that will
pay huge interest down the road...
JAN. 12
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. B
Communications Tech 63, Franklin 55
This was a battle of the unbeatens in Division B
and C-Tech again rose to the occasion with a huge road W. They pretty much
coasted throughout holding a 10 to 14 points lead all the way through. The star
here was emerging soph. F Andrew "Scootie" Randall, a 6-5 205-lber. He's
like Mr. Consistency himself. His numbers here were: 17P, 7R, 3A, 3S & 2B. What
doesn't this kid do on the court. By his senior year, he'll be an absolute
nightmare. He has a lot of the same ways as Omar Thomas & Erik "Ugs"
Adams and those were two of my favorite recent Pub players. Both were
likened to a Pub player of old Lou Lloyd. These types of guys simply get
it done whether you put them on the wing or in the hole. It'll be fun watching
this kid's progression. Sr. PG Jernardo "Jay" Lucas hit for 15 points
(7-for-10 shooting) while also plucking 3 steals. Sr. WG Shawn Francis
(8P) was important also as he was the primary defender on Franklin's best
player: jr. WG Sean Chennault. The Electrons fought hard, but came up
short. There is a lot to like about their team. They have a few long athletic
kids to go along with the very poised Chennault (13P, 4A). The strong lefty has
that pace to his game that the likes of Redding and Pettis have. It makes him
soooo hard to guard. His father, Anthony, was a great player who just in
the last few years ended his pro career overseas. His little bro, Anthony jr.
an 8th grader, has already made a mark on the National scene. Sr. SF Chris
Penn battled for 12 points & 7 boards. Long, 6-5 soph. F Brandon Penn
(7P, 7R, 2B) also showed promise.
AA's Notes: It was a shame that this contest was not allowed to
have spectators because of some unrelated in school incidents. Don't get me
started on stupid that sounds/is. Maybe Mr. Chapman needs to make his return to
his old roots... I found today that sr. wing sniper Ben Whitt (9P) is a nephew
of former Overbrook star guard Carl Lacy, sr. Those are some good
bloodlines. Mr. Lacy says he has some contacts with the CIAA and that he wants
to help some kids get there... Finally, if CT can get consistent contribution
from 6-6 jr. F Lance McDowell, they could prove to be very dangerous.
After watching McDowell this past summer, I thought he'd really take off this
season, but thus far I've been wrong. The tools, and he has plenty of them, are
there. Maybe he's suffering from a bit of stage fright, maybe its mental, maybe
its cardiac. Whatever the case is with him giving max effort, this club could be
still playing very deep into March... Finally, I'm still scratching my head
trying to figure why CT is playing in division B with mostly schools from the
far NE and North Philly when they are the school in the furthest opposite end of
the city, near the airport. Why not have Swenson and F-Towne switch to B and put
CT in A. Doesn't that make much more sense? I know the alignment will change
next year as I'm hearing about 3 more charters plus about 4 converted middle
schools will enter into the League. The PUB will be even more confusing...
JAN. 10
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. C
Imhotep 49, Engineering & Science 47
Where do I begin? This must have been the most only
in the Pub day of the year. Every nutty thing that could have possibly happened
around the League happened today and Lonnie Young Rec Center was front and
Center. You see both Imhotep and Hope Charter use Young for home games and as I
walked into the center around 2:30, Hope and Prep Charter's JVs were running
warm-ups while E&S and Imhotep's players sat in the bleachers in confusion. I
thought: What in the world? Finally, the mattered was solved after 15-minutes of
deliberation. The Varsity game and Imhotep took precedence and that was that.
Phew. This could have gotten ugly, but let's get to the game... The Engineers
looked flat for 3 quarters and looked to be producing a clunker much because of
the active Panther zone and some because missed open shots. In the mist, they
found themselves down 38-24 going into the 4th quarter and it looked like
Imhotep was set to cruise on home. The Engineers made things interesting in the
fourth as plugged away making the score 47-41 with just under 2 minutes
remaining. Then jr. G Jermaine Washington (20 points on 8-for-11 shooting
including 3 treys) hit a streaking jr. PF-C Tamir Johnson (11 boards) for
a lay-up making the score 49-43 with 1:05 remaining and things looked to be done
for the game Engineers. It still was not though as emerging 6-5 jr. PF-C
Thiel Benn (more on him later) went to the line and drained two putting them
within 4 with less than a minute remaining. The Panthers were fouled and
freshman WG Kenny Battle went to the line missing the front end of the
one-on-one. Jr. SF Darrell Mills (6P, 6R) rebounded and was eventually
fouled at the other end with 13-seconds remaining. He calmly drained both shots
making the score 49-47. The Engineers were forced to quickly foul and they did,
but no time went off the clock. The referees (3 of them by the way), Coach
C.M "Chalie" Brown & Coach Andre Noble debated for at least
10-minutes about what should be on the clock. Brown said 12-tics. Noble said 11.
The refs said 11.8 and finally so. SF Denzel Gatewood went to the line
for one-on-one. He missed as well and sr. WG Andre Murphy grabbed the
rebound. He dribbled the length of the floor, fumbled with the ball before
handing off to jr. PG Sandy Tanner. Tanner took a deep trey that went off
the backboard. Benn rebounded and went back up with a put back, but it was ruled
after the buzzer and Imhotep hung on. Though Washington may have been the top
Panther here, the ink went to sr. CG Curtis Jackson (and deservedly so).
He is the unquestioned team leader and though he didn't score a lot here (only
4P), he did some leader things (5R, 5A). During the stretch in the 3rd which IC
took strong command, he dished 3 straight assists out of inbounds plays, a
jumper by Washington, then a tough inside bucket by jr. SF Hanif Nixon
(11P, 6R) and finally a trey by Washington. Jackson always seems to encourage
his teammates and has that will to win. There's a lot to like about him as he's
just a solid kid. Many D-IIIs know and understand this and are hard after his
services. Washington's jump shot was wet from start to finish. This is a key
weapon going into the stretch of tough games. For the Engineers, Benn was their
most impressive player. He went for 10P & 7R all in the second half (he never
touched the floor before halftime). When myself and Ted saw him earlier
in the year, we just sensed that he'd be decent over time for the Engineers.
Well sooner came before later for the big (and growing) lefty. He showed great
fundamentals and seemed to only get better as the game got tighter. His best
move was a turnaround jump hook that Rick Jackson would have been proud
of, but I also loved the way that he used his body in positioning for rebounds
and always stood his ground when a Panther drove the lane never leaving his
feet. Those things are unteachable for big guys and he already has them down
pat. His awkwardness was solely responsible for Johnson & 6-6 jr. PF Kashief
Edwards going out on fouls as he went to line 7 times (making 4). He could
be a major force with continued growth, confidence & hard work. Murphy had the
worst day he could possibly have scoring only 2 points while only grabbing 1
board and dishing one assist. He shot a mere 0-for-7 to boot. His backcourt
mates I did like though. They are spunky junior PGs: Jaret Richardson
(13P, 3S) & Tanner (11P, 5A). They feed off each other and both do different
things. Richardson is the shooter. Tanner is the penetrator. Both are shut down
defenders. It seems like they've been together forever. (More on that later
too). I'd love to see how a rematch with these two teams would play out. The AA
playoffs will be very interesting especially if E&S gets a first round home
game.
AA's Notes: While today's first situation was unfolding, I
reiterated my strong belief that JV & Varsity should be played back to back at
the same site. If that were the case, a mix-up like this could not be
possible... Prep Charter's JV coach is none other than former Northeast & Coppin
State star Antoine Brockington who must be an old friend of Dan
Brinkley's from their Abbotsford days... Imhotep has added a new player to
their roster and he is 6-6 jr. C Shawn Rodgers, younger brother of last
year's City Player of the Year Scott Rodgers... Its funny how time flies
as I can remember like yesterday three years ago when Richardson, Tanner &
Washington were all in he backcourt playing for Conwell Magnet M.S. They are all
developing into nice players... Finally, after the game I commented to legendary
assistant coaches Ken Hamilton & Rich Yankowitz about the clutch
play of Thiel Benn. Both said simultaneously,"He's the one right there."
They were speaking of freshman F Marcus Brown who had made a brief
appearance scoring one-point. Coach Hamilton then elaborated, "That kid can do a
lot of things. he could be special." I think I'll take the legend's word for
it...
JAN. 9
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. C
Bodine 75, Lamberton 57
Boy was this an interesting game. The Blue Devils were
coming off their first win of the season, a 28-point killing of Freire Charter,
who had no league losses beforehand. Bodine had been sputtering themselves
losing 4 straight all by large margins after a strong start. Well the
Ambassadors got a big W as they keep making progress towards the A playoffs. The
star here as it has/will be many nights is electric soph. PG Lamar Jackson.
The quick-ster went for 22 points, 10 boards & 2 assists while also draining
4-of-4 free throws down the stretch which is all important for PGs. The more
watch him, the more I'm falling in love with him as a player/prospect. He's got
such a confident way about him, not cocky, but very sure. There's never anything
wring with that. Then there's his skill level/IQ: He gets up extremely high on
his jump shot, knows how to keep defenders off balanced and already plays
inspired defense. He's second to only Velton Jones (Gratz) in terms of
young guards in the Pub and that's pretty good company as Velton is probably one
of the best guards in the League right now. Strong sr. CG Tyree Griffin
had a solid night with 11P, 5R, 4A, 4S. The lefty is great at slashing in the
lane and drawing contact. There is a place somewhere for him in D-III land. Thin
sr. CG Greg Brown also had a solid night with 13 points & 3 steals. 6-4
sr. PF Justin Rollins, who the D-IIIs should be all over had 9P, 8R, 4B
while holding his own against the large Blue Devil Front-line. He's very
active/athletic and will only get better once he gets to college. Now on to
Lamberton... In truth, the Blue Devils only have three varsity level players and
two of them are very large projects. The other is "Mr. Everything" sr. WG
Nafis Ricks who currently leads the Pub in scoring (and I don't think
that'll change). I'll talk about him in a few. First about the Big fellas. The
twin tower seniors Leonard "Gooch" Chaplin (6-8 290) & Marcellus
Miller (6-8 320) had an up and down night. (NOTE: These two guys could
put Old Country Buffet out of business.) Both missed some in tight shots
that they shouldn't have while Chaplin went 1-for-7 at the line. Right now
Chaplin is the better of the two because of game experience. He scored 7 points
here while snaring 19 boards and blocking 4 shots. He's a policeman in the paint
and will get better once he's in top physical condition. Miller (4P, 9R) on the
other hand needs a lot of work, but there is something there to work with. He's
got soft hands and a touch around the basket. Plus even at 320, he's not what
I'd call fat. Both bigs will need JC and Harcum in Bryn Mawr, PA which has a
slew of Philly kids there now in their first year doing very well has been the
first school in contact. Last year's PG Rob Phillips is there making big
strides as the starting PG. Now onto Ricks... He went for a career high 41
points (15-for-34, 5 treys, 6-of-8) while also snatching 13 boards. He has to do
so much for his team to do well, but I think its making him a better player. The
more he puts up big numbers, the more eyes will open. I actually thought that he
should have been more selfish especially since the other guys weren't doing the
right things when he passed them the ball. He's a very good kid and said to be a
solid student who could qualify academically. I am going to make some personal
calls for him to some Low D-Is (a Prep year might even be better). His best days
are ahead and he would be really deadly with better players around him. I love
the way he competes and fights until the end. Physically, he has a
strong/athletic build. I'd say he's more of a mid range shooter than long ranger
and he's very good at attacking the basket. It'll be interesting to see what
happens with him as he could be this year's Steve Martin. Stay tuned...
AA's Notes: What was Overbrook doing this fall not getting those
two Lamberton behemoth's to play football for them? I'm sure Lamberton because
of its small school status could be a club team for the Panthers. Those two
giants would have fit right in on the field especially Chaplin. I hope bases
like these aren't left uncovered again in a league that needs every able athlete
that it can get... Next year when PIAA enrollment is reevaluated a school like
Bodine will not be forced to play up to AA. It will be able to stay in its
single A and compete for a state title there. Early rumblings say that the Pub
will get 11 state spots (4 AAAA, 3 AAA, 3 AA & 1 A). This should be great though
last year Freire or Prep Charter probably would have won the whole A deal.
That's both teams true classification...
JAN. 8
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SOUTH
Neumann-Goretti 80, Bonner 47
The Saints showed their resolve by bouncing back here
from a tough loss to Roman on Friday by pasting the Friars on their home floor.
Today, I'll start with the losing team first. There wasn't much to go on though
as jr. WG-PG Jeff Jones, a Maryland commit, was their only source of
offense tonight with 27 points (10-for-18, 4 treys). However, his only other
stats were a blocked shot and an assist. Now I know he has plenty of
responsibility for this squad and that the Saints were simply on a mission and
someone was going to pay after losing on Friday, but this is high school ball
and the stars have to do everything not just score. The lack of assists weren't
totally his fault because on at least 5 different occasions he got his teammates
open shots which weren't converted, but rebounding is something he just must do
at this level and even at the next. Active, 6-4 jr. PF Robert Wyley (6P,
7R) was the only other Friar that truly made a contribution. Now on to the
Saints... They played today without jr. PG Antonio 'Scoop" Jardine who is
nursing a tender knee, but they were like a machine. The three-headed monster
consisted on 6-9 jr. C Rick Jackson, 6-5 sr. G-F Earl Pettis and
6-2 sr. WG Derrick "D.J." Rivera. Jackson was flat out dominant! The more
I watch him and the more I tab him as the #1 overall prospect in the area in the
Junior Class. Why? Because he just knows how to maneuver at both ends of the
floor in the 15-feet and in area. He's just ultra skilled and now plays with a
serious passion. The big left-hander went for 18 points (5 DUNKS), 11 boards, 4
blocks & 2 assists. Pettis looked as smooth as he could possibly look in going
for 23 points, snatching 6 rebounds, dishing 7 assists & plucking 3 steals. Its
funny because I got to Bonner (only a short drive from home) about 5-minutes
before tip time because I was entrenched into the TV watching St. Joe's-Temple.
After watching Earl less than a half hour later it was like de-ja-vu. Pettis
must be a clone of Gratz/Temple's Mardy Collins. About the same size,
same body, same pace, same game, ect. There ain't a better comparison than that
as Mardy is set to make a fistful of bucks in the Pros after this season. Rivera
was his normal max effort self. He went for 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting,
grabbed 9 boards & dished 6 assists of his own. .
AA's Notes: The Friars will have better days as they entered this
one 2-0 in League play. The great thing is that there's no Neumann to play every
night... Its so amazing watching how The Saints' Jackson has developed to this
point. He went from extremely awkward 8th grader when I first saw him to still
very awkward 9th grader to wow look how much better he's gotten 10th grader to
flat out stud now! At this clip, I shudder to think what he'll become by next
year. If he keeps improving, growing and filling out, I could see him being the
second coming of Derrick Coleman. I know the Syracuse coaches are hoping
the same...
JAN. 5
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. B
Dobbins 72, Northeast 52
Another day at the Pub office, another SLOPPY and I mean
SLOPPY contest. By my count (There may have been more...), these teams combined
for a whopping 66 turnovers (Northeast 38, Dobbins 28). "The Hank" can be
overwhelming for guys who never played there and the young Vikes found that out
yesterday afternoon. Coach Greg Moore has his Mustangs playing some
serious ball. Its great to have him still in the mix. The Pub needs guys like
him. Even by his own admission, there isn't much talent, but they play harder
than hard and that's at least 75% of the battle. They also play with sense and
poise for the most part. Coach Moore was ecstatic when I walked in the door
about how this team got him his first win at the friendly confines of Strawberry
Mansion. As for the cast of characters, here goes: First there's sr. WG
Justin Hayes, who may win the league's most improved award. He went for 14
points, 6 boards, 3 assists & 5 strips while also playing the role of team
leader. He's a very good shooter though he missed all 4 of his long rangers on
this day, who importantly knows cold how to get his own shot. Defense, No
Problem! He's also said to be a decent student. D-IIs should give him a look and
IIIs should be drooling. Next there's 6-3 sr. PF Vince Evans (15P, 8R).
He plays with a serious edge while also getting some things done very skillfully
from 12-feet and in. There's nothing he can't do in that area. IIIs should be
all over his case as well. He's strong and physical. No doubt he could have a
nice career in the right situation. How about whirlwind jr. PG Tariq Timmons
(17P, 3A, 3S)? He's cut in the mold of Mustang water-bug PGs past -- very quick,
very tough, sometimes flashy, sometimes businesslike, always a treat to watch,
ect. -- I think you get my drift. This kid is fearless! He reminds me a lot of
former Dobbins/D-I Del State star Miles Davis when he was doing his thing
in the Pub. Let's see how it plays out. Ah now for my favorites, the role
players. You gotta appreciate those unsung guys. The FB players seniors F
Mike Harris (8R, 3A) & PG Marcellus Willoughby (5R, 6A, 3S). Their
contributions are vital. They are the reason why if I were coaching at a school
with FB, I'd always find two/three FB players for my Varsity team. They simply
bring a different attitude to the team. They aren't afraid to make plays, aren't
afraid to leave in all on the line. The Vikes had a tough time here except for
6-6 jr. F-C Sean Evans. He had a monster performance: 21 points, 10
boards, 6 steals & 4 blocks. What I really liked about it all was the fact that
he took my advice and for the most part kept his butt near the basket. He's so
much more effective that way. It showed because he went to the line 16 times
(made 11). I hope he stays near there. If so, he'll get these kinds of numbers
every night. 6-5 sr. F Tyrone Blassingame had one of those nights. He got
himself in foul trouble early and then got himself unfocused because of the
refs. He did have the play of the day, a quick-leaping two-handed slam in
traffic off a bounce pass from Evans over two defenders, and-one. There aren't
many that can get up that quick. He's got the pogo stick legs. The same kind of
day was had by soph. PG Tyron Lytes, who I really like. He kind of got
bit by "The Hank's" mystique and never got on track. Its ok, he'll have better
days.
AA's Notes: As always, its good to be at 22nd & Lehigh. I make
sure I'm there once a year if not more often... The Mustangs once again have a
solid club who will be even better as the year goes on and should be a dangerous
stop come playoff time. Just put it this way, I would not want any parts of
their home gym during that time... The hero of thee day is sr. G-F Rysaun
Mills. In his late 4-minute run at the end of the game he managed to jack up
7 shots (seemed like 17 -- smile), making 3. The crowd went wild. It was one of
those classic Pub moments...
JAN. 3
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. A
Germantown 65, Bok 48
I had a feeling coming in that today's games would be
strange. Some teams have practiced and/or played over the holidays. Others have
done neither. That can always make for a strange mix. Low and behold, I was
correct as the inactive Bears of G'Town came out flat and were even flatter when
their best player 6-2 sr. combo guard Tyrell "Smalls" Coleman went out
with two fouls. They went down to the game Wildcats by 5 at the half before
regrouping in the second and running away with the W. Coleman was the leader
with 24 points, 2 assists & 3 steals in very limited action (may have played
less than 20 minutes). He has an abundance of skills -- very strong with the
ball, a good shooter, even better passer, ect. He wants to go the prep school
route and I think that might his best option. In another year with hard work,
you never know what this kid will become. The co-headliner today was sr. PF
Elijah Clark. Clark is an undersized, yet VERY rugged lefty. His desire
claimed him 24 boards to go along with 14 points. He owned the lane. That kind
of effort will not go unnoticed. I like tiny soph. PG Khalief Mason (9P,
3A, 2S). He battled the more seasoned Bok guards tooth and nail while pretty
much controlling the tempo. Senior Fs Dwain Edwards (10 boards) &
Kelvin Campbell (12 boards) are both tall, long, lean & athletic. Both
scored 7 points. Bok's best effort came from sr. water-bug PG James "Doo"
Jones (25 points, 4 assists & 4 steals). He seemed to be the only Wildcat
with a constant fire. Hopefully, that'll pay off a month from now with a playoff
spot. "Doo" is said to be a very good student with a qualifying SAT score.
Methinks the D-IIs & strong IIIs aught to get on the case. I only see a kid like
him being better with better players. 6-5 sr. F Gary Harris did lend a
hand with 10P, 10R & 3A. He would be a whole lot more effective if he stayed no
further than 10-feet from the basket. Those numbers might be 16, 13 & 4 every
night if that were to happen.
AA's Notes: This one got out of control in the latter stages as 4
Bok players fouled out and 2 technicals were given out during that time. One
went to Coach Lloyd Jenkins who continued his love affair with the
stripes (smile)... Also on another note: When will the Pub brass get smart and
start hiring adults to do the book and the clock. Its disrespectful to Pro
stat-men like us knowing that almost every game that we aren't at may have shaky
scoring being called in. Seeing is believing. Some of the kids given these tasks
are in way over their heads. For one this stuff ain't in the least bit easy. For
two, I mean you have to know this game to be able to cover/chart/take stats for
it. Its just sickening how many times I get asked by the refs what I have in my
book. It'll take twenty bucks to pay an adult to do the clock and another twenty
to pay someone to do the book. That's all. I hope this changes as it is truly
one of the ills of the Pub...
DEC. 22
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. B
Lincoln 67, Fels 51
Not a bad game at all. Lincoln looked VERY impressive as
they thumped Fels in the first half 40-22 and then took a 55-32 lead going into
the 4th quarter. They played with sense & smarts and they did one even more
important thing. They made SHOTS. The ringleader was sr. CG Doug Tucker
with 22 points (19 in the first half; didn't play at all in the 4th), 5 pulls, 4
dishes, 4 blocks. He made 4 treys en route and made many-a athletic play. The
D-IIIs should check him out as he already has a strong body and seems to work
hard. A school like Del Val could do no worse. 6-5 jr. SF Edmund Gonzales
(13P, 10R, 4A) was the next most impressive Rail-splitter. He's got a sweet
stroke to go along with some other nice skills. I LOVE how he uses the backboard
even for short shots. He has the angles down pat. He's one to watch because if
he keeps growing and filling out coaches will take notice. Jr. PF-C Tyrone
Bolden used hustle and desire to snatch 9 boards off the bench. I also like
6-4 sr. SF Denzel Jackson, one of three Lincoln Lefties. He went for 6
apiece of points and boards & 3 apiece of assists & steals. He's very long and
rangy with a multitude of skills. He's a very valuable player because of this.
One of those guys that always goes unsung, but truly bring vital contribution.
No one truly stood out for Fels, but I did like their three starting guards in
sr. WG Desmond Robinson, so. WG Darien Mitchell (10P) & jr. PG
Antoin "A.J" Harper (11P). They can make things happen at times especially
thee very confident Mitchell.
AA's Notes: Lincoln is a weird bunch in that just about every
player on the roster can be classified as either a combo guard, small forward or
a Center. Its amazing, they actually have 4 true high school Centers and all of
them get some run... The 'Splitters are also a very dangerous bunch if they play
the way they played here. They are as athletic as anyone and play solid defense
plus 4 guys out there at a time are threats to make an outside shot... Though
Coach Steve Gittleman said that it must be my presence in the gym, I get
the feeling that his team could play like this more often. We'll see come
January I guess...
DEC. 20
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. B
Northeast 52, Washington 49
Not really a great game, but a GREAT atmosphere.
Northeast won the solid play from its senior captains: 6-5 CF Tyrone
Blassingame (12P, 10R, 2S) & 6-2 WG Derek Lockhart, a lefty (12P,
12R, 3S, 4B). Blassingame is a young colt who looks like he's just beginning to
gallop. I agree with Ted's assessment that he could be really good 2-3 years
from now. He doesn't have a hair on his face and looks like he could grow again
and then fill out. Plus he's qualified. If I were a D-II, I'd take him and
red-shirt him for a year. 6-6 jr. F Sean Evans (8P, 11R, 3B) played an
uneven game. He did some nice things and some other things that made him
ineffective. Most times he hovered around the wing and tried to drive the lane
when he should have took his large body in the post especially being that he was
the biggest strongest kid in the gym. 6-1 soph. PG Tyron Lytes is
extremely thin, but he already has savvy and is authorative. Jr. G Andre
Anderson (4-of-5 for 9P, 2A, 2S) for some reason didn't play in the first
half, but was the difference maker down the stretch. He made smart play after
smart play. For the Eagles, sr. WG Saye Gondeh was the man. He drained 5
treys en route to 21 points, dished 3 assists & plucked 5 steals. For the most
part he played with brass & sense. 6-4 sr. SF Dan Powell went for 11
points, 11 boards & 4 blocks. 6-4 sr. PF Frank Peters had 11 & 7. Sr. PG
Ranald Lindsey (5 assists) who missed a forced game tying trey at the
buzzer played pretty well for the most part throughout. The atmosphere here
especially the halftime show trumped the actual game in terms of excitement. may
FB players were in attendance and it made for a great show. Its always good to
see these two FB powers do battle in hoops.
AA's Notes: GW is one of those rare squads that starts three
lefties: Powell, Peters & Lindsey are all southpaws. They could be hard to guard
down the stretch when they start gelling... The Vikings could be decent as well
down the road as they have both size and athleticism in their favor. The one
thing that could make me a believer is the development of Lytes. He holds the
keys. If he can possibly man the ship, the Vikes could be one the four State
Playoff entrants from the Pub...
DEC. 19
NON-LEAGUE
Bodine 68, Kensington 65 (OT)
Man am I glad that I decided to check this one out. Both
teams played with sense and had some talented kids. I remember going to a game
like this last year. I believe it was Edison-Mastbaum and that's where I first
remember seeing Steve Martin. He only wound up being 1st team All-State
and is now making strides at John A. Logan College in IL. Anyway
the Ambassadors of Bodine needed OT to outlast the Tigers of Kensington. The OT
period was basically owned by soph. PG Lamar Jackson & 6-4 sr. PF
Justin Rollins. They also were probably Bodine's two best players here.
Jackson is a quickster and a slickster. He's VERY hard to stay in front of,
plays with much confidence & also a lot of heart/desire. He went for 16 points,
6 pulls, 3 dishes & 3 plucks for the afternoon, but his 2 free throws followed
by a B & R pretty much iced the game with under 10 tics remaining. Rollins was a
man down low finishing with 22 points, 18 boards & 2 blocks (5P, 4R in OT). He
doesn't always finish cleanly, but he has a lot more room to grow. His body is
pretty strong and he gets off his feet pretty well. The D-IIIs should be all
over this late bloomer. He has a qualifying SAT score. The third man for the
Ambassadors was chunky sr. CG Tyree Griffin (16 points, 2 R & A). 'Griff'
must weigh 230-lbs and is built like a full-back, but he handles most of the PG
duties. He's a crafty lefty who is also a tricky ball-handler who sees the
floor. Two other role players played well in sr. SF Greg Morton (8P, 12R)
& 6-3 jr. WG-SF Nick Mucerino (4P, R & A). Both played with smarts and
savvy. "Muuch" has the look of a kid who'll get better down the road. He has a
lot of skills right now. Kensington was pretty impressive. I didn't expect them
to be this under control or GOOD for that matter. They shared the ball. They
made shots. They were intense. It was pretty refreshing to watch. What was even
nicer is the fact that all of their talented guys are underclassmen. Let's just
hope that they can keep their heads above water and develop. The best two of
that group are jr. PG Courtney Roberson (16P, 6R, 4A) & soph. WG-SF
Kalief Armstrong (25P, 13R, 6S). Roberson is one tough cookie and IMO is
underrated amongst junior point guards in the city. He plays with serious fire,
has blazing quickness and makes the right plays more often than not. If he were
on a more mainstream squad, he'd be known all over the city! Armstrong is a
sleeper too. He's very athletic with skills that range from the baseline to the
three point arc on offense plus he really gets after it on D. He's a pretty
relentless kid who deserves some attention. Another soph. F Emanuel "Manny"
Cruz was also impressive as he went for 8P & 7R. And yet another soph. WG
Angel Miranda, a lefty, sniped for 3 treys en route to his 11 points.
AA's Notes: Its always good to check on the lesser lights of the
Pub to find the diamonds in the rough that always lie there. In my 6 years on
the scene, I've discover enough diamonds to make me a millionaire and often
times they have come from Non-Playoff Pub teams... Case in point: Bodine's
Jackson is GOOD enough that I consider him one of the top 5 points guards (In
the City League's only Courtney Stanley of KK and Gratz' Velton Jones
are better) in this area in the class of 2008 and no one even knows about him...
As funny as this may sound, Kensington with the player that led them last season
is probably a playoff team. Even funnier is that they may still fight for one
without him and that's why we play the games... And the trail goes on...
DEC. 17
RED KNIGHT SHOWCASE CHALLENGE
Communications Tech 76, Coatesville 54
The Phoenix have arrived! So far this young season Lou
Biester's Communications Tech hs has defeated 3 District I AAAA schools two
of them by more than 20 points and the other a very solid Springfield (Delco)
squad on their home floor by 8. This isn't supposed to happen for a school that
only has 179 boys from 9th to 11th grade which makes them barely a 2A school.
They are playing 3A this year and probably for the next 3 years. One things that
is impressive about this squad has been that on every night there's been a
different leading scorer which makes them next to impossible to prepare for.
Often times its someone that comes off of the deep Phoenix bench. This time it
was 6-2 jr. enforcer Shyheem Satchell. Satch' came off the bench to score
22 points, snatch 6 boards & pluck 2 steals. He shot a blazing 7-for-8 (1 trey)
& also 7-for-8 at the line. He showed great body control to go along with the
ability to finish at the rim. It was s fine performance. Sr. PG Jernardo
"Jay" Lucas (14 points, 5 dishes) is the catalyst. When he's playing the
right way, this team is hard to beat. The strong lefty is an intimidator on the
defensive end and has been very much under control on O. 6-5 soph. F Andrew "Scootie"
Randall was once again his consistent self with 15 points (7-for-11), 12
boards, 3 blocks & 2 steals. Its so refreshing to see a kid his age play the
right way and always make the right play. 6-5 250-lb soph. F-C Manny Jordan
didn't score, but had 4 apiece of boards and dishes. The big fella got skills
too. He came off the bench in the Springfield tournament to garner
all-tournament honors. Coatesville has a long, storied program. Its banner
player is NBA All-Star Richard "Rip" Hamilton and year in and out there's
talent in the building. Needless to say, this is a great win for this budding
program.
AA's Notes: This Phoenix squad may have the best make-up to
challenge the mighty Huskies of Prep Charter because they have a bunch of
active/relentless bodies. It should make for an interesting match-up
could/should happen in the second round of the playoffs. I can't wait to see it
develop...
DEC. 16
NON-LEAGUE
Frankford 60, Bartram 45
This was a strange affair as it seemed that the Pioneers
could have had their way with the young, yet brave Braves, but the youngsters
from Frankford often times lost focus for stretches which allowed them to hang
around. This group of Pioneers boasts five sophs in their top 7 to go along with
veterans sr. scoring machine Lewis Leonard & jr. handyman Kenny Spotwood.
Something great may happen in time, but its early so... Leonard was again the
star of the show with 22 points, 12 boards & 3 apiece of assists, steals &
blocks. He actually put the game away in the third with a 12-0 run to end the
quarter in which he had back to back to back high flying slams. The first was a
jump through the basket in transition, the second was a solo two-handed reverse
and the third was a right-handed hammer in traffic, he's left-handed by the way.
Spotwood did his part by working the baseline for 16 points. He also plucked 3
steals. 6-4 soph. PF Antwaine Brown (9P, 6R) had the dunk of the day though as
he caught the ball in the high post took one dribble and then viciously exploded
to the hoop for a power slam. He is one to watch as he may be even more athletic
than Leonard. If his other skills develop, watch out! I also liked the way soph.
PG Malik Ballard (4R, 3A) played. He rarely turns it over and can cause his
share off them. Plus he's a tough nut who is as unselfish as they come. Don't
fret for the young Braves. They have a new boss in the young Brett Olsen and you
can sense the time and love being put in. Plus there's plenty of talent and most
of it is in the younger grades. Three future standouts, all sophs, are 6-5 SF Novar Gadson, 6-4 SF
Clarck Dure & 6-0 PG Tyreese Wheeler. Gadson and Wheeler
are both lefties. Gadson is extremely smooth/fluid. Dure is crafty/athletic &
Wheeler is strong/tough/rugged. He's also already a team captain and only a
soph. I look for good things from this group in the very near future.
AA's Notes: The Pioneers are an intriguing group as they are capable of hanging
with the best on one night or letting a lesser light give them a run. Its all in
the youth. I do sense that they will be a lot better come Mid-February than they
are today... One of my mentors, Keith Hines, was in the house. This report is
being done on Monday morning and I bet Keith is still talking. Hines is
known and loved by all so we won't hold him accountable this time (smile)...
DEC. 15
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. C
Prep Charter 104, Robeson HSHS 64
I wanted to check this one out because Robeson's gym is a
scorer's delight and with the Pub's TOP team coming in I knew that the
scoreboard would not stop lighting up. I wasn't wrong and this contest was
entertaining from both teams. PC played without two rotation members: 6-2 jr. PG
Josh Martin had some school work to take care of while 6-8 260-lb sr. C
Cullen Askew (one to watch for Low D-I coaches looking for size) had a
tender ankle. The other Huskies gave the mighty Huskies trouble for the first
quarter and a half before PC took command then frolicked. PC's top players were
the Morris twins, 6-8 SF Marcus (23P, 2 treys, 8R, 7A, 4B, 2S) &
6-9 PF Markieff (21P, 14R, 9B, 2A, 2S). Both twins play extremely hard
and can do just about anything on a basketball floor. Needless to say, their
upside is limitless so I'll talk more about some of the others. LaSalle signee 6-5 sr. WG
Rodney Green also had a nice line of 18 points, 8 boards & 4 assists. What I
liked was the fact that he doesn't have senioritis and still makes those around
him better. That will go a long way in what should/will be a long season for
coach Dan Brinkley's crew. Three VERY, VERY good freshman impressed.
INTRODUCING: 6-1 PG Jesse Morgan, 6-0 CG Parrish Grant & 6-6 SF Tyree
"Chuck" Harris. Morgan (8P, 2A) is very confident (runs walks with
his head high) and has a great stroke
already even off the bounce. He also has that long/athletic build. Grant is
reed-thin, but plays like a seasoned vet. He also showed some toughness in
wanting to guard people. Harris may be the best of the three in time. He made
some eye-popping moves and is very graceful for a kid his age/size. He's also as
LONG as they come even longer than the twins, no lie. Robeson has nothing to
hang their heads about. They have two very good young guards in soph. PG
Rob Hall (16 points) & jr. CG Thaddeus "Boobie" Fauntleroy (17
points, 3 assists). Hall is a transfer from E&S and suited Varsity last year. I
distinctly remember him because coach C.M Brown sometimes would let him
talk to the refs at the beginning of games as the acting captain. I thought that
that said a lot for him as a kid. I was right as he is quite the little general --
very poised, born leader, tough, ect. Fauntleroy was even more impressive. He
reminds me a lot of former Bartram/Texas A&M star Bobby Leach. He's
got the herk and the jerk down pat. He drew more oohs and aahs than a Serena Williams
tennis match. He IS extremely crafty and HAS those lightning quick feet. He's
got what it takes to make defenders look foolish. Thin 6-5 sr. F-C Chris
Cohen played tough down low with 8 boards & 4 swats as did strong 6-1
sr. G-F Jerome Rockeymore (11P, 10R), a lefty and 6-3 soph. SF
Chris Delbridge (9P, 4R, 2B).
AA's Notes: This Prep Charter team is a beast! They can easily go
11-deep with their full clip and they have every piece it takes to win championships.
I wouldn't bet against them and that's for sure. PC takes off Sunday for the
always tough Mission Prep National Classic in San Luis Obispo, CA
where they'll play 3-games... One thing that impressed me even more about the
Huskies was that there already seems to be a sense of team unity. I asked coach
Brinkley if I could take the team's picture for the website and he said sure,
but sr. co-captain Paris Griffin said no because Josh (Martin) isn't
here. That was great to hear as you could see that these guys get along... I also feel good for the
other Huskies from Robeson HSHS. They have a sports nut for a principal in Mr.
Roger Jackson and a great hoops head for a coach in Rob Powlen (nee
"Bartram Bob"). To top it off, he has a great assistant in former Overbrook star
Tahar Sutton whose young and energetic. Things can only go one way for
this program and that's up... Finally, you must experience the Robeson gym. It may even top
E&S in terms of the cool factor. Both benches are on the opposite baselines and
the scorer's table is on the road team's baseline. Fans stand along the sidelines
and the courts are of the portable variety. I guess you just have to go there
and
see for yourself. Its a great place...

NON-LEAGUE
Mastbaum 59, Olney 52
This wasn't much of a game as the guards on both squads
went off half cocked most of the way which caused for more slop than a pig could
handle. Mastbaum took a commanding during the second and third quarters which
made the difference. The top Panther is 6-1 jr. power guard Brandon Smith.
He scored all 18 (9-for-15) of his points in the first half while being the
steadying influence thereafter. The only thing I didn't like was that he didn't
shoot enough after halftime. Its rare to see guys like, a marquee player who
also excels in little things duty (did all the in-bounding, best defender,
ect.). He could be very good this time next year once he develops, "The
swagger." B. Smith really gets after it though and showed in his 12 boards, 2
dishes & 3 plucks. 6-4 jr. PF Chris Ayandokon is also a nice prospect. He
is very intriguing because of his length and willing ness to play the right way.
In this one, he went for 12P, 9R, 2A & 3S. He looks like he may have another
growth spurt and his slim body should fill out in time. I have my eye on him.
The best of the guards today was tricky jr. PG Marvin Warden (11P, 3A,
4S). He, too played with a lot of energy. Once he learns pace, he'll be very
dangerous. Olney's best player today was 6-2 235-lb sr. swingman Anthony
"Barkley" Edwards. Their normal top dog is 6-3 235-lb sr. PF Lamar
"Oakley/Mar-Mar" Coney, but he was unavailable due to a bad ankle sprain.
He's out for 2 more weeks. Edwards wears #34 just like sir Charles himself and
also has the brash one's derriere/antics (smile). He went for 22 points & 16
boards here and those would be numbers that "CB34" would be very proud of. He
and Coney must form a pretty formidable forward tandem and D-IIIs should check
them out. Junior guards Kareem Watkins (8P, 7R, 2A, 3S), (righty) &
Joe Scott (5P, 4R, 5A, 3S), (lefty) were solid. Both were aggressive, but
need fine tuning so that their aggressiveness turns into more production.
AA's Notes: I know what you are thinking. What is a power guard? Power
guard is a position that I thought of in my scouting report for guys that are
actually undersized small forwards that thrive going to the basket or causing
havoc on the baseline. They are normally strong, athletic and in the 6-1-6-3
range. Basically it was my way of making a position for the position-less. Some
of the better power guards in the area are guys like: D.J Rivera
(Neumann-Goretti), Tyrone Lewis (Harry S. Truman) & Frankford's Kenny
Spotwood... Where have all the smart, sensible guards gone? Once upon a time
every Pub team had not 1, but at least 2. Now days, your lucky to see 1 in every
other Pub game you go to... And the trail will go on...
DEC. 12
NON-LEAGUE
Del-Val Charter 82, Washington 67
Run-N-Gun Basketball is back in the Pub baby! Is it me or have the
Warriors of DVC been watching old 1980s Denver Nuggets tapes. These guys run and run and
run plus everyone on the team can shoot the long ball. This team is a serious problem in
the lower enrollment division and entire league for that matter. They could seriously
spoil someone's joy come February. They already rang up 109 points in a game this year
against an up-state team and that could happen again at any time. Their top player is 6-1
sr. CG Corey James. James is an old school Pub guard, one of those guys who always
makes the right plays. He can go hard left or right or shoot the long ball over you and
that makes him pretty much unstoppable. In this one he scored 23 of his 28 points
(11-for-17, 3 treys, 3-of-4) in the first half. He also dished 6 assists and plucked 3
steals. What makes James so good is that he gets everything in the game's flow and is such
a calming influence. I don't know his academic standing at the moment, but I do know that
he isn't an AAU fixture. Nevertheless, he must be one of the better unsigned/committed
guards in the East. He just has TOO many things going in his favor. With a prep year or 2
years of JC, you'll probably see him on TV. The second best warrior is 6-3 jr. SF Troy
"Buckets" Blue and he went off for 49 the other day against Robeson. He only
had 20 here, but all of them were in the 2nd half. Blue is an unconscious scorer to say
the least. He never loses confidence and is always in attack mode. Plus his other skills
are getting better (6 boards, 4 assists). He went 0-for-9 in the 1st half and 9-for-13 in
the 2nd. He made 3 straight transition lay-ups to get going and then put in a 25-foot
bomb. I swear "The Boston Strangler" former cult hero 80s Sixer Andrew Toney
must have looked like this in high school! Maybe we should start calling Troy "The
Division C Strangler." Blue is the tallest Warrior for the moment and that could be a
problem unless someone emerges. They only dressed 9 here as a few guys were disciplined.
Sr. WG Stanley Alston is a nice 3rd scoring option. He went for 8P, 4R & 3A.
6-3 jr. PG Kyree Hanford didn't score a point, but dished 5 assists and seemed to
have a big impact on the game. He is another steadying influence who anyone would love to
play with. 6-2 (give or take) role players: so. Ali Odd (8P, 6R, 2B) and srs. Maurice
Robinson (7P on 2-for-2, 1 trey, 2-of-2, 3R, 2A, 2S) & Ray Wells (6P, 4R,
2A, 2S) all do dirty work and make timely plays. How much more can I say, this team is
pretty dangerous. The Eagles won't be bad either once they gel. They got down big a few
times here, but kept fighting and scrapping once having the lead all the way down to 8 in
the 4th quarter. A few bad mistakes took them out, but that's why you play the
non-leaguers, to work out the kinks. 6-4 sr. PF Frank Peters carried the load. The
strong/athletic lefty did yeoman's work down low finishing with 24 points, 12 boards &
3 swats. He could help some D-IIIs. 6-5 sophomore SF Miguel Bocachica is the top
overall prospect. He went for 21 points (5-for-12 on treys) & 8 rebounds. Sr. PG Jakeem
Williams (9P, 5A, 3S) brought spunk & heart off the bench. Without him, this would
have been a major blowout. His play could win them some games later.
AA's Notes: The Eagles should be fine in Division B play as I don't know if
they'll see another team with this kind of firepower. The games should be a lot slower...
DVC on the other hand is a threat to break the century mark every time out. Their game
with Prep Charter could be a classic...
DEC. 9
NON-LEAGUE
Plymouth Whitemarsh 60, Simon Gratz 57
Another weekend another favorable result for Simon Gratz'
Basketball team. Yeah, I know it was a loss, but it really was not. You see this was a
state playoff rematch in which PW last year out-classed the Bulldogs. That was not the
case here as this was a see-saw battle at PW where it is next to impossible to win. Gratz
has showed the last two weeks that it compete with the best state wide. Next Saturday an
even larger test looms with St. Joseph's Prep, should be interesting... Anyway sr. PG Malik
Alvin was once again very impressive. The University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) signee
hit for 24 points (10-for-10 at the line), snatched 7 boards & dished 3 assists. His
quickness with the ball in transition is downright amazing as are his one-on-one skills.
In this one, sr. G-F Da'Rel Scott (Maryland -FB) guarded him primarily and he was
no match. That was even more impressive seeing that Scott is only the state's fastest man
on the track as the defending 100-meter champ. He's also very strong. Soph. PG Velton
Jones had a solid line of 9 points, 6 boards & 4 assists. It was uneven though as
most of his damage was done before halftime. Had he played the same way after the half, we
may have had a different outcome. Inside forwards seniors Sean Gilbert & Jamal
Watson combined for 12 points & 12 boards. Watson missed 5-out-6 free throws which
went a long way in deciding the game. The Colonials were led by the strong play of sr. PG Ronald
Moore (22 points, 6 treys, 10 assists). This may have been the best game of his
career. Moore goes 6-0 and probably 140-lbs so D-Is may be a bit scared off, but not to
worry guys in Low-I land this kid's best days are in front of him and I believe he's an
all-league player by his junior year in any of the Lower Level D-I conferences. He already
excels in the shooting, craftiness & savvy departments. He just MUST get stronger.
He's also a very good student and comes from a pretty good family. His older brother Chuck
was a PW star in the Mid-Late 90s. He won a state title during his senior year and then
went on to have success first at Seton Hall, then at Vanderbilt. He's an assistant on the
Colonial staff right now. Slinky 6-4 junior SF Anthony Minor also hurt the Bulldogs
going 7-for-7 from the field for 18 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds.
AA's Notes: This was an extremely well-played game. I need to see games like
this because of all the bad ball I sometimes have to endure. There's something about this
Gratz team that I really like that I can't put my finger on just yet. We'll see as the
year goes on... The Colonials will head to the friendly confines on 18th and Hunting Park
next year in this home and home series where the Bulldogs rarely ever lose. I'd like to
see more Pub schools try this with district I teams. The home and home series could
familiarize some of our schools with what is going on outside the city/around the state
and vice versa. Its a win win for everyone involved...
DEC. 8
PUBLIC LEAGUE DIV. C
Masterman 40, GAMP 33
I am very happy I came to this game. Both teams attempted to play
the right way and were unselfish. Plus there was a great crowd. Masterman has 6-7 sr. F Zahir
Carrington (Lehigh signee) and he's one of the League's better prospects. He went for
18 points (5-for-11, 8-of-15), 17 boards, 2 assists & 2 blocks here. I still thought
he could have done more though. With his skill set/size/athleticism, he could be dominant
in Division C. He only dominated here in spurts. I'll say this though: He has become a
DEADLY mid range shooter and he almost always makes the right play. He also has confidence
in his teammates. Sr. PG Mike Mack, a target for many D-IIIs, had an off night, but
he did pilfer 6 steals. Jr. WG Mickey McGuire (15 points, 3 treys) might be the key
Blue Dragons season. He is a sniper who never looks the least bit rattled and actually
looks like he relishes the role of putting teams away. he made huge baskets down the
stretch and was pumped while doing so. GAMP has a few interesting prospects. Every player
on the team is an underclassmen except John Brickhouse and he's only the 7th or 8th
man. Jr. Gs Eric Funaro (3As) & Anthony Venafro (9R) are both as feisty
as they come. Soph. G Stefan Thompson is cut in their mold, but he owns more
basketball savvy. Then there's the top 2 prospects. They are 6-5 jr. F Khiry Gordon
(9P, 12R, 3B in limited action). He's very long/bouncy. His possibilities down the road
could be very good. He had a nice tip dunk in traffic plus he was very active throughout.
The other was even more interesting in freshman PG Laron Byrd. He is the brother of
former Bok star Leroy Byrd. He's got many of big bros skills, but plays even more
like Prep Charter's Josh Martin. He was disciplined in the first half, but went the
distance in the second scoring 9 points while being fearless the whole time.
AA's Notes: This was a great experience. Its always good to check out the
magnet schools because their kids understand what it means to play for the name on the
front of the jersey which is what high school is all about. Plus their fans always support
them and their cheerleaders are always good which are lost arcs in the new Public
League...
DEC. 7
NON-LEAGUE
Roman Catholic 67, Imhotep Charter 43
I won't say much here because our student reports had this one
covered, but here are a few thoughts... Roman wasn't at their sharpest (27 turnovers), but
they did more than enough to win and have many things to be happy about. This was their
first game too and that counts for something... There is much responsibility this year on
sr. PG Ray "Doodles" Sims (4A, 3S) as he's the only thing close to a PG
on the roster and the only guy under 6-2 on the roster. I think he can handle it, but time
will tell... Jr. WG Bradley Wanamaker is the REAL THING. His ceiling is limitless.
I feel that he's the most talented player in the entire junior class in this region. When
he turned it on here, he was sensational and that might be an understatement... 6-6 sr. F Mike
Ringgold was tough inside with 20 points and 14 boards. He is one of the better
unsigned seniors in the area. I'm sure he's receiving plenty of looks from the Low and Mid
D-Is. His inside partner sr. PF Rockeed McCarter (16 boards) is the BEST rebounder
in the city. He owns the glass at both ends. He's a HUGE addition to the Cahillites
because of his toughness and knack for boarding. IC couldn't do much right here. They got
shots, but they didn't fall and their entire starting frontcourt might not have played a
total of 32 minutes due to severe foul woes. There will be better days for "Brother"
Andre Noble and his troops as many (if not all) of his top guys are
underclassmen...
DEC. 6
GLEN MILLS TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT
Central 55, Strawberry Mansion 50
This was the first game of the tournament and it proved to be a
well-played, evenly matched contest between two solid Pub schools. Mansion should make a
strong case in 3A while Central is the defending overall league champ. The Lancers won
because of their experienced players, the three returning starters: 6-4 sr. CG Kenny
St. George, sr. CG Rashiid Coleman & jr. F Marcus Morris. Morris did
his usual share of the grunt work with 7P, 6R & 2S. Coleman scored 10 of his 13 in the
4th while he also dished 3 assists & plucked 2 steals. St. George made his presence
felt as well on an admittedly off night for him. He's one of the top returning players in
the league and will be expected to carry a huge load most nights. He went for 17 points, 9
boards & 2 assists here, but he played great defense and many times ran the offense.
The Knights were led by their top returning player sr. PG Matthew "Moo"
Johnson (18 points, 3 assists, 3 steals). He didn't shoot well either here though and
will have overall better nights. Sr. PG Stanley Williams didn't score (only took
one shot and never came off the floor), but didn't turn it over much either while dishing
6 assists. He's a team glue type that every team needs. The two most offensively talented
Knights just may be the 6th and 7th men. They are jr. WG Doug Mathis (a Dougherty
transfer) & 6-4 sr. G-F Eugene Moss (10 points in very limited action). Mathis
has a knack for scoring and triple that thought for Moss. Moss could be one of the more
talented players in the entire league when his head is screwed on straight. He simply can
score points in a hurry in dazzling fashion though it seems that he must work harder if he
wants to be more of a fixture in Coach Gerald Hendricks rotation.
AA's Notes: The funny of the day goes to the mother of Coleman. Every time
he made a nice play, she yelled out in her soprano toned voice, "That's my boy."
Or when the refs made a bad call, "That's terrible ref." I agreed on both
points. I wish the more Pub kids had parents like her... The Knights could experience much
success this year if all goes right... LOW-I ALERT! Kenny St. George
is qualified, hungry and available. He deserves looks. I hope some of you guys can come
out and be the judge. There's a lot to like IMO...
Glen Mills 68, Robert Lamberton 33
This wasn't much of a game before it even started as the Blue
Devils have been decimated by suspensions and report cards. Four key contributors (2 of
them are giants -- 6-8 300 -- give or take, maybe I'll start calling them Runyan and
Thomas, they are just as large) were unavailable for this one. With them, they
could be a force in the 2A division and maybe even creep into the playoffs, no lie.
Without them, look at the score five lines above. They have one VERY good player in classy
yet brassy sr. WG Nafis Ricks (24 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals). He is one of the
city's sleepers. He would be very hard to control with some help. He's aggressive yet
smooth, extremely long/athletic and skilled. He also seems to only be getting better. The
D-IIs (With Prep or JC, he's D-I) could do a whole lot worse than this kid. He reminds me
a lot of late 90s Bartram star Sean Mills who went from city sleeper to having a
great career at D-II power Bridgeport (CT). His situation bares watching. I loved how he
kept encouraging teammates and gave all of them love afterwards. It was refreshing to see
a kid who understands how to be a leader & who just flat out gets it. He'll open
plenty of eyes over the course of this year. Mine are already open wide. Glen Mills looks
like the GM of old. They have some really good prospects and they should make noise in
District I.
AA's Notes: The Blue Devil twin towers should be back next week. One told me
that he's 6-7+ 291. The other goes 6-8 320. That's 13-5+ 611 combined. Why in the world
didn't Overbrook get them for the FB team? I'm sure that they could have used them
(smile)... Glen Mills has an intriguing prospect in 6-11 sr. C Arsenio Carter. the
big fella just started playing ball last year and he has made VAST improvement since I saw
him this past Spring. He is still raw, but with the rate he's made improvement and the
shortage of size there is all across the country he will get a long look. Low to Mid
Majors should make the trip to GMS this winter to check him out. Coach Craig Mellinger
says that he is expected to be a full qualifier. The longer he's on the board, the higher
the level of schools there will be to check him out...
DEC. 5
NON-LEAGUE
West 60, Edison 49
I won't say much about this one. It was a very sloppy game. As
always in December, I try to check out as many teams as I possibly can because some of the
lesser lights won't be priorities later... West has some decent talent and could give some
of the better teams a scare if they play the right way. I don't see an eminent PG and that
could be a problem, but if just a solid one emerges the Speedboys could experience some
joy... They have two good big kids and that's a start. The first is 6-5 sr. PF Dwayne
Jackson (9R & 4A). He's not a very clean finisher, but he gets things done in
terms of the little things department. The D-IIIs should be out to check him out. He could
have a solid career somewhere and he is a good kid which always is a plus. The other is
VERY intriguing. He's 6-6 jr. F-C Wayne Johnson (24 points on 10-for-18, 4-of-9, 11
boards). I'd also say he goes about 230 and he knows how to maneuver in the box area and
even out to 15-feet. They went to him often in the first half, but not
nearly enough later. He could have had 40 if they did as Edison had no one that could
match his size or skill for that matter. The guards are very raw and inexperienced, but
also talented and athletic especially jr. Khari Harris in particular. He goes about
6-2 (maybe taller) and has a long, lively body. He could be the PG before long, but he
must learn to slow down first. Many times he went 1000 miles an hour when he only needed
to move 1-mile an hour. Edison is a team full of wing guards and they don't hesitate to
jack up trey balls (8-for-25 today). I do like three of their players in 6-0 so. WG
George Baker (14 points), sr. PG Fabian Pena (6 assists, 4 steals) & sr.
G-F Eric McNair (12 points). They should lead the Owls all year long.
AA's Notes: The Speedboys could win some games and have a solid season. That
would be great for a athletic department that hasn't had much success in recent years...
The Owls will rely on the trey ball. if it falls they could win some too, but if it does
not they'll be in for some long afternoons...
DEC. 3
CHESTER OMEGA PSI PHI TIP-OFF TITLE
Gratz 59, Chester 57 (OT)
What a statement this was! The Bulldogs went into the Lions Den and
came out unscathed in an unbelievably competitive early season match-up. I must say this:
This group of Bulldogs isn't their most talented group, but they play tremendous D &
play with unmatched heart and those factors could take them places. Plus they have a
top-notch PG in sr. Malik Alvin (headed to UTEP). More on him later. Remember the
Clippers are the defending 4A State Champs, but they did lose 6 of their top 8 to
graduation. However, they do return their top player in 6-2 sr. PG Darrin Govens
(headed to St. Joseph's) who is one of the Nation's best point guards and IMO the best
show-runner in between NY & DC and possibly even beyond. Let's set the scene. The
Bulldogs came out of halftime going on a 6-2 run to tie the score at 35. Then Chester
ended the 3rd with a 10-0 run of their own making it 45-35. If you thought Gratz was done,
you are sadly mistaken. The Bulldogs roared back to even take a lead late in the 4th
before it went to OT with the score tied at 50. Gratz controlled the OT period for the
most part, but still found themselves entrenched in a tie game with :09 left. Alvin drove
the length of the floor and got an open lay-up, he missed but got his own rebound tapped
it back in at the buzzer sending the gym into a frenzy. Alvin played the best game I ever
saw him play. It wasn't just his numbers: 22 points (8-for-13, 2 treys, 4-of-7 at the
line), 6 boards, 3 assists & 2 steals or the fact that the Chester faithful heckled
him all game long (And I mean heckled him), but the fact that he played tremendous D on
Govens (18 points, 6 assists & 3 steals) especially in the 4th quarter & OT period
where he shot 0-for-6 and score only on 3 free throws. The second best Bulldog was so. PG Velton
Jones (10P, 6R, 3A). Jones made brassy play after brassy play. He, too is one tough
defender. Sr. F Sean Gilbert (9 boards) did grunt work inside. Jr. F Tommy
"T.J" Sykes also did especially in the latter stages.
AA's Notes: This win was especially big for Coach Leonard Poole as
his college frat the Omega's sponsored this tournament. He was ecstatic afterwards...
Gratz has made their early season statement that they will be a force to be reckoned with
statewide and that spell trouble for everyone else as over the years there has been
something about the Bulldog teams that took pride in the name on the front of their
jersey. They always/annually won big games... The fret for the Clippers. They are loaded
and I mean loaded with young talent. They have a sensational freshman PG and two tall
sophomore forwards who will all garner D-I scholarships before its said and done. The
Clippers are known for getting better as the year goes on and this season should be no
different which only means that the Bulldogs will have to see them again if they want a
piece of the state Championship...

COACHES versus CANCER CLASSIC
Episcopal 67, American Christian 53
I won't say much about this one except for a few things. This was
the first marquee event of the year it was a great experience. EA showed that they aren't
ready to go down yet. Many had concerns after their opening loss to Abington Friends,
but they put them to bed after this. Wayne and G both had it going here scoring 23
& 22 respectively. This game they received some help though as 6-9 sr. C Mike Yocum
(8P, 9R) & jr. PG Pat Kelly (10P, 6A, 2S), a lefty, both contributed. ACS
has the area's newest cult hero/high school hooper in 6-5 200-lb sophomore G Tyreke
Evans. He went for 20 here while struggled in crunch time, but he is as special an
offensive talent as they come. He'll play in the money league someday. The Eagles also has
in its fold two former city leagues youngsters in 6-2 so. WG Charles White (Gratz)
& 6-4 freshman G/F Oscar Griffin (SJ Prep). Both look to still be finding their
way in the new surroundings.
DEC. 2
SPRINGFIELD DELCO TIP-OFF
Communications Tech 73, Bensalem 52
There is a new sheriff in Southwest Philly and they reside at a
small school footsteps away from the airport. Comm. Tech is a spin-off of John Bartram who
has become a powerhouse in recent years. CT used to be one of its annexes and every since
coach Lou Biester has been the head coach he has required that most of his players
go to his building which has always been Communications. This was the Phoenix first game
ever and they didn't disappoint as they cleared the bench against an under-manned Bensalem
squad. It was a great collective effort, but a pair of sophomores stood out in 6-5 SF Andrew
"Scootie" Randall (17P, 10R, 4A, 4S, 3B) & 6-5 250-lb F/C Manny
Jordan (12P & 7R). Randall is the team's top player and is establishing himself as
one of the city's better young prospects. He plays the game the right way, hard and smart.
He's also got the heart of a lion. He is one of those classic coach's dream types that the
Pub always seems to have. You know the Omar Thomas, Erik Adams, ect. Jordan
comes off the bench and knows how to throw his big body around. He also has a nice stroke
and a nose for the boards. Sr. CG Leonard Jackson (11P on 5-for-6) brings grit and
emotional leadership. Sr. PG Jernardo "Jay" Lucas (9P, 2A, 2S), a strong
lefty, is the team's overall leader. This team uses as many as 11 bodies and will be a
dangerous out come time for the playoffs. They could even go very deep into the 3A State
playoffs...
AA's Notes: Comm. Tech eventually went on to win the tournament by besting
Springfield for the Title, 65-57. That's a great statement win as Springfield has one of
the best players in the state in 6-8 F Dan Geriot (Richmond) and is thought of as a
very strong 4A team in District I. Not to mention it was at their place... Lucas was named
MVP while Jordan & Jackson were both named All-Tournament...
DEC. 2
NON-LEAGUE
Norristown 58, Overbrook 42
This wasn't a great start to the trail. The Panthers could be
decent later on, but for now they are a work in progress and well Norristown is always and
probably always will be a tough out. Sr. guards Raheem Davis (4 steals) and Kylieff
Brown (3 assists) must develop some cohesion if this is to work, especially Davis. I
know for sure he's better than how he played here, but its ok because its early. Davis, a
feisty lefty, is a ball-handling wizard, but he sits on the ball a bit too much and seemed
to be pressing here. Sr. C Naftalie "Talie" Ellis (8 points, 18 boards
& 2 blocks in a little over half the game) was a rock. He did serious damage while
battling serious foul trouble. The other team gave him his props afterwards. The one huge
bright spot shined in 6-1 freshman WG Nurideen Lindsey. This guy is a scoring
machine to say the least. Lindsey has already made a name for himself on the AAU circuit
and was tabbed "Too Easy" by one National Scout. Why you ask? Because he makes
scoring look easy. He went for 13 points (5-for-10, 1 trey, 2-of-2) in the 6th man role
here playing roughly half the game. He'll only improve as the year goes on and could even
eventually be the team leader. He's that mature...
AA's Notes: Norristown has an all-state caliber player in 6-5 240-lb sr. F Mike
Buckley (20P, 11R, 3A, 4S). "Buck" has a multitude of ball-skills (handle,
stroke, right/left, ect.) to go along with his strength and surprising
agility/athleticism. He's also the consummate team player and a Class A kid. Low and Mid
D-Is should be banging down his door-step. He's one of the area's sleepers... Norristown
also has former KK PG sr. Brian Organtini. He played smart here and iced the game
with late foul shooting... Overbrook's gym looks terrific. The lighting is great and
there's a new floor...
