CHIKILRA GOODMAN'S BIG DAY
Today, I sat with Chikilra Goodman & her family at the Bright Hope Baptist Church, near Temple's campus, as they announced that she would be attending Hampton University. There were so many people congratulating her for her accomplishments. It's amazing to even think about the process she went through to reach this point. Chikilra (Bodine High) not only led the nation in high school scoring for females, but also led the city in rebounding per game this year! Now, for someone who averaged 38 pts. and 20 rbs., you would say to yourself, shouldn't she be at a bigger school? In the words of my favorite football commentator, Lee Corso, "NOT SO FAST, MY FRIEND" . . . This girl has been looked up and down like pure gold for the universities in the legendary MEAC conference, which has a list of Historically Black Universities and Colleges, who have performed to the best of their ability to make a name for the conference within the NCAA nation. I not only saw in her face the right decision but the opportunity of creating the best future for herself. Her Mom, Tondalaya Goodman, seemed to be very thrilled and enjoyed the chance to say her daughter will be attending her Alma Mater. You ask her about her choice and she would tell you, "My life has always been about difference obstacles and proving myself, I have chosen somewhere, where I belong and can call my home. They embrace me and my family and I adore the opportunity of making the best of my situation. Whether and big or small school, I'm playing to WIN." She not only has the opportunity to go somewhere and play basketball to the best of her ability, but she will pursue the major of Heath and Physical Education while hoping one day to play pro and then become a basketball coach. The embracing of her friends and family only spoke volumes to what will be ahead for her in her future in college.  I pray that success comes her way and she finds peace in her heart that things will turn out for the best at Hampton University.

JERRELL WRIGHT'S BIG NIGHT
I can't envision another time in my life, where I was this excited for a child. This child stands 6'7" and is from my alma mater...MURRELL DOBBINS CTE. A lot of things have changed but one thing that hasn't is the idea about knowing when something is right for you. There are always ins and outs to everything and Jerrell took the words from his head and put them out of his mouth. "I'm committing to LaSalle University to continue my academics and athletics." This was the biggest thing he could ever dream. At the high school banquet and with tears of joy in his great-grandmother's (Helen Baxter) eyes, the once-dream has now become a future. Twenty-five years from the last championship, Jerrell helped his teammates not only commit to winning but also achieve a sense of pride for themselves and the program. Jerrell not only had his great-grandmother by his side, but also, his loving mother (Angela Wright), father (Jerald Wright), grandmother (Trudi Wright), sister (Jasmeen Wright), Coach Greg Wright (Hunting Park Warriors) and others. With his parents in his life, he has had someone to pour out his heart to and to know that everything, no matter what, will be all right. Things were so successful this past season for him and being around to check out some of the games was a great joy. For a team to only win 2 games the season before, then turn it around to capture a Public League 3A championship -- wonderful. His coach, Will Johnson, always believe in his ability and knew that thoughts of the two-win season would soon fade away. With dedication and the opportunity to have such wonderful coaches (Coach Johnson, Coach Guilliam, & Coach Parker) anything that was unthinkable became possible. You could tell it was a huge moment for his father and he wanted to see him achieve the best things possible in his life. He is not only going on to join some great people, but he is joining another Dobbins great, HORACE "PAPPY" OWENS, who was a McDonald's All American out of Dobbins in 1979 and shot 9-17 for 18 points in the All American game. I bet if you ask Jerrell now, DREAMS DO COME TRUE. With his ability and persistence, he will be just fine at his new home and everybody is proud to see him become an Explorer. Congratulations to the family & friends of Jerrell, the coaches who prepared him and the wonderful people who have helped him during this journey. ALL SMILES AND THUMBS UP TO THE COACHING STAFF AND LASALLE UNIVERSITY FOR RECEIVING A GREAT TALENT AND HUMBLE STUDENT-ATHLETE.

PUBLIC LEAGUE GIRLS' SEMIFINAL
(At Southern)
Prep Charter 65, Freire 51

I thought it would be cool to do something I have never done before. Report a woman’s game. I was told that these two teams were the best around and had the ability to shake things up…ESPECIALLY, because the team that is waiting on the other side to play in the championship on Tuesday is Central, who are been known for the elite domination of the PUB. The PUB has never been short of women’s basketball, and has the identity or creating solid foundations such as having the number one scoring girl in the country this year but not getting the recognition she (Chikilra Goodman) deserves, after averaging 36 points and 18 rebounds this season is what I was told, and scoring over 2,000 points and 2,000 rebounds and not too mention the blocks and steals. In this game there were two special players for each team. Tiffany Johnson (16 pts) for Prep Charter and Shawneal McKeither (24 pts) for Freire Charter both seemed to hold their own for their respectable teams. In the first quarter, things seemed to start off very slow but Prep Charter would make a mark by Johnson hitting 2 free throws. Freire would counter with one free throw and that’s how the score would stay until 2 minutes left in the quarter until somebody else from Prep Charter hit another free throw, then the score was 3-1. Then with no field goals, 18 turnovers between the teams, about 16 free throws shot in the first quarter and fouls being picked up, there was nothing anybody could do but shake their head until 42 seconds in the first quarter the first basketball was finally made by Sydney Mallory (10 pts) to go up 5-1. Then there was a steal and Yasmine Montgomery (8 pts) got her first two points in the books. With only 2 field goals in the first half the first would end at 9-3. The second quarter would pick up with Lashay Banks (7 pts) starting off quick with a 3 pointer for Prep Charter and suddenly we start to have a game. Robyn Harcum (6 pts) would extend their lead with a jump shot of her own and Prep Charter began rolling and found themselves up 10. A smart timeout was called and Dakia Manning (7 pts) would come out after the timeout and score the first basket for Freire. You could tell that something didn’t seem right in this game, until I looked around and was trying to find out how Yasmeen Thompson (8 pts) from Freire didn’t seem to dominating the paint. Prep Charter was overcrowding the paint early and the 6 footer could find her way to any clean shots or the other 6 footer Asia Watson. Taryn Vinson (5 pts) would hit a three point play and get on a 5-0 run. With all the fouls being called Johnson would find herself with 4 fouls in the first half and only have 4 points but play by Nydeera Lee (11 pts) would lift her team in the first half. McKeither was fantastic to help them during the entire game. Prep Charter at the end of the quarter would lead 26-19. In the 3rd quarter Freire would start early by finding a way with getting the ball inside to Thompson with a 3 point play & McKeither would hit some clutch shots to get them back within reach. Johnson for Prep Charter was to be very careful but sneaky with her game in the second half. It might have been clearly started that she needed to be aggressive but only on the offensive end because she had 4 fouls in the first. Even with Freire making their run and coming within 3 points at one time, Johnson would extend the lead back up to 10 and that’s how this quarter would end 47-37. The fourth is where things seem to get a little out of hand for Freire. With some crucial turnovers, they never seem to get into the flow and Prep Charter would capitalize by allowing Johnson to really dig in and extend the teams lead and at one point found themselves up 18. Johnson would score 6 straight points to help lead her team to a 8-0 run and they would not look back. Even with Thompson and McKeither having a strong second half, Prep Charter would carry on to win 64-51 and their fans would yell “WE WANT CENTRAL”. And that’s exactly who they will play on Tuesday at 6pm at the Liacouras Center on Temple. Campus.

PUBLIC LEAGUE FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFF
CLASS AAA QUARTERFINAL
Dobbins 48, Franklin LC 46
If you wanted to see the game of the day, if you weren’t at 22nd and Lehigh at 3:15, you might have missed it. This game had everything, anybody who’s a basketball fan would want. The Public League has been criticized for the last couple years about its performance and its inability to have competitive games and collegiate level players. I believe that idea was thrown out the window with scout, media and NCAA men’s basketball coaches at hand. Now to the good part, I looked at the schedule and thought to myself, what game would be most competitive. I guess I picked the right one because it was right at my alma mater. This game started off hot with Turhan Griffin (18 pts.) jumping on the Mustangs with a 3 pointer after 2 minutes of neither team scoring. Dobbins decided to respond with an 8-0 run within the next 4 minutes, lead by Jerrell Wright (18 pts, 20 rbs, 7 blks), who got in the paint early and had some great finishes with eye popping dunks. One thing that caught me off guard was the return of Khalil Curtis (1 pt.), who had been hurt since the middle of the season but started off in the lineup around with Ermon “Chops” McMillon, who has been a huge part of the program in the last couple years. After lack of offense, you could tell that Coach Poole had something up his sleeve and was ready to do whatever it took to get the job done. He had called time out after the run and decided to pull out the full court press, which seemed to catch Dobbins off guard and they would make the next 2 buckets to pull within one after the 1st quarter. Aahmid Mink (12 pts.) was spectacular. In this game he seemed to pull deep threes and hit most of them when they need. Griffin and Mink starts to hit shots in order to pull away from Dobbins a little and swing the momentum and FLC would lead at half 20-18.  After the half, that’s when Jerrod Johnson (9 pts) decided to join the party and find ways of getting fouled and getting to the basket. He really didn’t seem to get into the flow because of the Wright’s ability to defend anything in the paint. After FLC started the half with Griffin hitting a layup and leading a 5-2 run. Dobbins fired back with a 6-2 run for their self. After what had seem to be a small infraction in the crowd, the game would resume and Griffin & Mink would hits 3’s but Wright answered back with 4 points of his own to end the 3rd quarter 38-33 FLC. Basir Fulmore (former teammate of FLC, 9 pts.) opened the 4th bringing the team within 3 with a jump shot and a forcing a turnover with 6:25 left in the quarter. Then they were brought into 1 by Walter Lawrence (10 pts.), with intense defense when Coach Johnson decided to switch his defense from zone to man to man. After George Ellis (3 pts), hits a free throw, Wright gets back to business and ties the game up. This is when the juicy part comes in. The crowd starts to get louder and you could literally tell that the stands one side was breaking down. With 2:40 left, Lawrence hits a shot to give Dobbins their first lead since the end of the first quarter. You could tell it was getting intense with both Dobbins and FLC fans in the house. Lawrence makes another steal and puts Dobbins up 3 and then Johnson comes down the other end and gets fouled and hits 2 free throws to bring them within one. After a missed field goal FLC takes back the lead by Johnson hitting two more free throws that were huge. With 44 seconds left in the game Wright makes another layup to put Dobbins up 1. After all the back and fourth with free throws and Jones hitting both free throws (Dobbins up three), Griffin takes the ball the length of the court and makes a layup with 14 seconds left. Then Fulmore gets fouled and steps to the line for a one and one and goes 1-2 from the line, but on the miss, Wright grabs a huge offensive rebound and gets the ball back out to Fulmore. Fulmore is fouled again and steps to the line but misses the one and one, which Dobbins stayed up 2 points (48-46). With 8 seconds left, FLC takes the ball the length of the floor and the clock runs out…ONE PROBLEM (I THOUGHT THIS ONE WOULD HAVE NO ISSUES)…but, the buzzer never goes off. Not understanding what happened and before the horn was heard Johnson was fouled. The refs got together with the coaches and decided that Johnson would step to the line for a 1 and 1 with FLC being down 2 points. After hitting some clutch free throws earlier in the game to keep them close, he stepped to the line. As he stepped to the line, this crowd went BANANAS. That was the loudest I had ever heard the gym, and with the clock being at 0:00. There was nothing to be done but hit both free throws on a one and one. Johnson took a deep breath missed the front iron of the rim to end the game with Dobbins winning their first playoff game in a long time. Matter fact…come to think about it. This was Dobbins first time in the playoffs since my senior year when we lost to Gratz by 3 at their home in the first round. I have to show lots of respect to FLC who brought in a new coach and new system and lost about 3 or 4 D1 basketball players to college in the last couple years and still were able to be fighters in the playoffs. Now Dobbins must visit P.E.T. tomorrow…Good Luck to both teams.

FEB. 19
THE FIRST VOLUME OF “ARE YOU CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND?”

When you ask yourself about the playoffs, what do you think about? Controversy, Wild Fans, Nervous Teams, Amazing Atmosphere, and the Media will all be at hand. As you and I can see, Basketball is getting so much bigger through the years, and as it does, I know you are wondering, who’s the best of the best (Player, Coaches, & Teams), and who will represent in the right way. As I like to think, it’s up to you to make the decision; I just happen to give statistics to back up the feeling or decision you might have. If you are wondering, what it will take for a team to win, this is definitely the place you want to be looking at. I think it’s about that time to break down the Public League and movements towards holding up the championship for the Public League PIAA.
Division A:
#1 Frankford
The Pioneers are led Terrell Clark (10.8 ppg). Who expected Clark to lead his team the high power they have been. The team is 19-2 for the year and hasn’t missed a beat. With the addition of Dehaven Brown (9.1 ppg), Carl Wallace (9.6 ppg) and Steffon Poole (11.5 ppg) for the season, they have lead to a perfect record in their division. They seem to have the intensity of some great defense and love to make plays up and down the floor. They go into the playoffs on a strong edge and plan on not looking back on their success during the regular season and look towards playing tough for the first round of the playoffs. They might have the best player in the conference but definitely looks to have the best team. Only the playoffs will tell.
Vs.
#8 Martin Luther King Jr.
For the Cougars, Black History Month must be bigger than they thought. The Cougars find their school, who was named after one of the greatest African American Pioneers, has found themselves in the playoffs riding on the back of something called defense. Even with the departure of their best team, they seem to catch some great juice from Mike Wilson (18.6 ppg), who has been truly brilliant this season, stepping up and doing everything for his team. Sean Rogers (10.6 ppg) & Kenny Edwards (7.5 ppg) have really helped give lift to a team that is looking forward to some great play going into the playoffs.
---
#2 Bartram
Bartram has been lead by what some might say as the best player in the city…Tyrone Garland (25 ppg). He has been nothing short of what people have expected this year. The VA Tech commit, has taken his team to new heights and plan on taken them even further into the playoffs. The help he has is no slack also with Quasim Jones (12.7 ppgs) and Zaahir Allen (13.2 ppg) at the helms of making sure with Garland needs that break, they will not lose a step.
Vs.
#7 Olney
They are lead by 3 guys who decided to go over 300 points this season. For this team, it reminds you of a team who are willing to fight to be where they need to be. The season hasn’t been the greatest, but they are in contention to make huge moves into the playoffs. Kadeem Patterson (15.8 ppg), Ray Jaggon (18.3 ppg), and Jabreil McLeod (20.2). Don’t expect them to lie down and play dead, the defense will be increased.
---
#3 University City
I can only imagine what this team will bring to the playoffs. They snuck up on some teams this year, when no one was looking. If they get rolling, it might be an ugly playoff for a lot of teams. They are lead by Michah Peeler (12.9 ppg) who has done everything in his power to make sure his team doesn’t fall through the cracks. Martez Lyles (11.4 ppgs) has made the load light for Peeler and with Michael Clemmons (9.7 ppg) and Brandon Baynes (9.6 ppg), working hard to help their team, they should not be slept on.
Vs.
#6 Central
Central will cause problems for teams, because of their ability to play good help defense. They have the ability to execute plays and get the job done. With seniors Joshua Welles (9.2 ppg) and Brandon Smith (13.5 ppg), they should provide the energy to help their team make some great steps towards a good playoffs. Miles Henry (7.2 ppg) and Kamell Alston (5.1 ppg) will be a key addition in the playoffs.
---
#4 Germantown
Germantown has marked their territory in the playoffs and has not even thought twice about being an impact in this conference. Even though, he’s going to go play football in college, Ramadan Abdullah (12 ppg), doesn’t lack any ability on the hardwood. He, along with Dominique Twiggs (10.4 ppg) and Eddie Callender (8.2 ppg) will help lead their team into a competitive playoff.
Vs.
#5 Southern
This team has been all over the place this season, but find themselves in a comfortable spot…THE PLAYOFFS. They will continue to make strides the playoffs and understand that nothing is promised. With good talent & the ability to play together, Shaquille Gaskins (12.5 ppg), Haywood Henderson (10.5 ppg), Rodney Chandler (8.5 ppg), & Mac Stokes (7.1 ppg) will contribute to help their program work hard in the playoffs.
Division B:
#1 Gratz
The legendary high school has yet again, put together a spectacular season. They have a new coach under the lead position, but has made a tremendous acquisition with Tyree Smith (14.6 ppg) at the lead. He has been tremendous this year and will need his “DOGS” to play strong with him, which this season has been big for Andrew Moye (13 ppg), Antoine Bland (11.7 ppg), & Damion McBride (8.9 ppg). Don’t expect anything different from the regular season for the Bulldogs.
Vs.
#8 Roxborough
This is the team, you might not look at. Just like March Madness, this team could caused a little of that if they play they way, they know they can. The have been right in the middle of the pack with leadership by Rashawn Anderson (14.5 ppg) and Anthony Patterson (12.4 ppg). Khalik Stanley (6.2) might have a bigger impact for his team in the playoffs.
---
#2 P.E.T.
This is the team that makes people feel like the PUB is wide open for whomever. They march strong. Their play is nothing short of any other elite team this year. Play by Carrington Ward (17.3 ppg) & Devante Chance (14.1 ppg), have left teams in the city having trouble catching their second wind. They have made it difficult to for people to watch everything they are doing. With up tight pressure defense and players like Hakeem Baxter (9 ppg) & Chris Green (7.8 ppg), they should look pretty good in the playoffs.
Vs.
#7 FitzSimons
Watch your back…this team will be on your heels and won’t even try and let you know. They have been doing great things this season. Even with the ups and downs, Erik Bradwell (10.3 ppg), Jaleel Bond (9.9 ppg), & Nate Boyer (6 ppg) has been holding strong together. Seems like they been raising a pretty good freshmen on the team by the name of Gregory Sharp (7.1 ppg).
---
#3 Murrell Dobbins
To think…this team only won 2 games last year. They are really making moves this year and not scared of any team in front of them. They have contributed great play to this division and decided to really fight this year, for anything and everything possible. That’s in thanks to Jerrell Wright (22.8 ppg) for being such a dominate force inside. Basir Fulmore (12.2 ppg) & Courtland Gilliam (8.5 ppg) have picked up their play for the team and has not allowed them to lose games without a fight.
Vs.
#6 FLC
You expect a lot from this team with a legendary coach. The thing about it is…You still can. They will definitely fire up this playoff if people don’t pay attention. They have had 2 players this season that has made their moves towards great play as Jerrod Johnson (17.4 ppg) & Turhan Griffin (16.1 ppg), who will give their team everything they need to make sure they don’t go out on a bad note. This might be a team to really watch, what they do depends on the rest of the players, such as Antonio Stickland (5.6 ppg)
---
#4 West Philly
Wow…is this like the old days with Gene Banks at the helm. West Philly has really made their mark this season. They have competed with the best and doesn’t plan on stopping now. Naquil Jones (15.8 ppg), Terrell Daye (13.3 ppg) & Raymond Nesbitt (13.3 ppg) have made the season painless and will expect them to lead the team in the playoff and make some noise.
Vs.
#5 Engineering and Science
Have to like this team for this courage and tenacity. They have taken steps in the right direction. They will look to make some statements in the playoffs, which they are nothing to play with. Mark Houston (12.5 ppg) & Dijon Eggleton (9.5 ppg) will make due for their team and make sure they will not be look over in their playoff picture. Kenneth Murphy (5.7 ppg) will also add to the team.
---
Division C:
#1 Strawberry Mansion
They might have the best player in the entire city. Marquette Bound DJ Newbill (27.1 ppg) has lead all leagues in the city in scoring and hasn’t looked back since. He has had some tough games but finds the confidence with people to support him like Khalil Meadows (10.6 ppg), Khyree Wooten (12.8), Cedrick Powell (8.8 ppg) have made watch their season turn into nothing but perfection. Their 22-0 record means nothing going into the playoffs but should give great confidence leading into great play.
Vs.
#8 Freire
Much different team this year, but they have strived to make a difference in their division. They have spiced up the division and made sure, nothing is going to run them over. Malik Wesley (19.5 ppg), Gevon Presley (13 ppg) & Carlton Wright (8.3 ppg) are all sophomores but have the right about to do this year to help their team win. They will be a driving force in the Playoffs and will leave everything on the court.
---
#2 Comm. Tech
This team has been battling for respect all season. To most people, this team doesn’t look like much, but they might be the biggest fighters in the PUB. The question that needs to be answered is…will that transpire into wins in the playoffs. Those questions might be answered by Shaquille Shannon (13 ppg) & Sherman Blanford (14.9). These two have made it hard for people to deal with them. With their athletic ability, and the help of Raheem Roher (11.6 ppg), Gameel Strange (6.6 ppg) & Chris Burney (7 ppg), Comm. Tech will be looking to go pass the first round.
Vs.
#7 Prep Charter
This team is interesting and is known for their great success. They have much to be proud of in a division that has been altering all season. They should be proud that they have made the playoffs and will be led by Mark Wilmer (11.9 ppg) and Matthew Hankerson (11.5 ppg). These two have made promising play for their team with the lift of some other huge players such as Laquan Stevens (7.9 ppg) & Akhir Frazier (6.9 ppg) who will have great futures.
---
#3 Imhotep
They have looked good all year, but had some spilled milk that needs to be taken care of in the playoffs. They have always known what’s best for them. This is playoffs will show how much heart they will have and that heart will start with David Appolon (10.4 ppg). He has been what they have need for the season to stay in close view. The great part about their journey this year is that Ameen Tanksley (12.6 ppg), Earl Brown (11.9 ppg), Erik Copes (8.5 ppg), Tyhiem Perrin (8.2 ppg), & Terrell Johnson (5.9 ppg) have been there for the ride. It must be great to have people to make the load lighter.
Vs.
#6 Del. Valley
They have been led by a wonderful scorer and leader by the name of Rysheen Dorn (21 ppg). He has been magical for their team and their fight towards the playoffs. They had huge help from big time players like Fred Ruff (6.6 ppg), Malik West (9 ppg), Carnell Gray (7.4 ppg), & Christian McNeely (7.8 ppg). I think people will look at Del. Valley this playoffs as players of unique skill.
---
#4 Franklin
Franklin has been doing well this season. One of the huge reasons why they are doing so well is the up tempo speed of Kenny Bey-Brown (15.4 ppg). He has been huge and has made smart decision for his team. He has controlled the offense and made sure teammates Jeff Giddings (9.6 ppg), Bahir Lacy (9.5 ppg), & Shawn Penn (8.9 ppg) get the opportunity contribute and have an impact for the team’s success. Expect nothing less than them taking advantage of every opportunity in the playoffs.
Vs.
#5 Vaux
This school is definitely one school that will sneak up on you. Like you never saw it coming. I was amazed to hear about this school and their success this year. They definitely had lots of potential but have made a huge impact in this division. With Jaleel Willams (9.1 ppg), Rasheed Jordan (8.6 ppg), and James Butler (10.1 ppg) have all been what Vaux has needed to get the job done this season and head into the playoffs. Watch for them to make their move.
---
Division D:
#1 MC&S
This team reminds me of Frankford. Has it all, from top to bottom. They are very strong against others. They prove every year that they are better than what people think. Even in the division they are in, they will not take “NO” for an answer. Niqel Caldwell (12.9 ppg), Tyreek Riddick (12.9 ppg), Thomas Moore (9.1 ppg), Andre Thomas (8.4 ppg), Kwahmere Gredic (10.2), & Chris Stokes (8.1) have all contributed to the team when needed. It’s amazing how much this team has grown and has shared the ball. They will look to put some pressure on the big schools.
Vs.
#8 World Communication
Has had their great moments this season. They always seem to up their heart when they get around the big competition. They have made a few moves in the right direction division behind one of the leagues’ best, Markeith Mont (21.9 ppg). Along with Mont, Jean Pierre-Forte (13.2 ppg), Elijah Johnson (8.1 ppg), & Shon Phillips (6.9 ppg), they will look to make the best out of their seed in the playoffs.
---
#2 Constitution
Definitely impressive for a new school. They have made their mark in the league and are looking to do more than that with a huge regular season of basketball. They have taken things in this division and shaken things up. One thing about this team is…you will never be disappointed. Xavier Harris (22.6 ppg) has been huge this year, when in action has dominated the play of the inside. His complements for the team have been Erik Raleigh (12.8 ppg), Abdul King (11.1 ppg), Shaun Levine (8.8 ppg), & Marcel Northcutt (7.3 ppg).
Vs.
#7 Randolph
Surprising team this year. They showed they can hang in there a little last year but never thought they would pick up steam like this heading into the playoffs. If they are willing and have the mental, they could be dangerous. Defense wins games for them. Amir Stringfield (21.2 ppg) has made sure of them being responsible with their play. Samir Hill (14.2 ppg) has been great for the team this year. They will look to play strong into the playoffs.
---
#3 Boy’s Latin
Flat-line…that’s the sound of your heart when Maurice Watson (25.8 ppg) is beginning his play. The first thought that runs through your head is, he has to be the best in the city with 1000 points in 2 seasons. They seem to have much help in Carlos Taylor (10.1 ppg), Isaiah Gans (9.9 ppg), Yamir Greenlee (9.5). They will be a blast this playoffs. Even with youth, they are mighty strong.
Vs.
#6 Palumbo

This is a very productive and scary team. They have the ability to put teams against the ropes. They really don’t knock out people, but they will jab fast and quick and have their moments. They have those moments from Anthony Wallace (17.4 ppg). He has made it possible for others to get opportunities also, including Devin Uqdah (10.3 ppg), Rasheed Calhoun (7.9 ppg), Mike Sawan (7.6 ppg). They have all contributed big and will look to knock teams off.
---
#4 Robeson
Jay Harris (21.8 ppg) is nothing to play with. If you try and mess with his feelings about his team, he will catch up wit you and kill you single handedly. His help arrives in so many different forms, key ones being Xavier Brown (9 ppg), Marquise Richards (9.6 ppg), Jamair Williams (8.9 ppg), Andre Washington (8.3). This is definitely the team to keep your eye on. Don’t blink or they’ll be ahead with energy.
Vs.
#5 New Media

There always great stories in the league and this might be one of them, if they make the right decisions. They seem to have their heads straight and have the ability to shake up a few things during a game. With Isiah Clark (14.8 ppg) leading the pack, they will look to make sure the playoffs doesn’t take any wrong turns. Josh Stevens (12.2 ppg), Bryton Hawthorne (9.5 ppg), Rasheed Wilkins (8.8 ppg) will match the teams energy and find ways of making impacts during the playoffs.

Phila. Electrical 51, Franklin LC 39
If there was ever a CHANCE, there were many in this game. It was amazing because I took my chance and attended this game but thought I would be late, but I seemed to be just on time. Being on time was one thing, but FLC's team being late would be another. The game really didn’t get started on time, because FLC had trouble getting through the streets, but it was great to see them get the chance to hit the floor and warm up. The only chance it seemed as though FLC had was to play strong defense and get a noteworthy performance from Jerrod Johnson (17 pts., 8 rebounds, 3 blks). Johnson seemed to make a way for his team to have a chance for the win with his ability to get to the basket and play bigger than he is. Johnson seems to be a D1 small forward or wing forward type, but for FLC he plays the 4. He gives them the opportunity and ability to run the floor and bigs who aren’t able to run the floor will struggle. In the first quarter, PET started off strong first with a 6-2 run. The run would be because of the ability of PET to get involved in the painted area. They would get the ball to Kyle Baldwin (10 pts., 15 rbs.), who established himself early in the game. The problem for PET was that Johnson got started and wouldn’t look back, scoring and making some outstanding plays for the team. At the end of the first quarter Turhan Griffin (8 pts., 4 steals) would hit a key three for FLC to go up 1. In the second quarter, it would be the same thing from FLC, tough defense and key plays from Johnson. PET would stay close with their big men side, and awareness by guards. At halftime, FLC would lead 51-39. Something must have been said at halftime, because PET would come out fired up and playing hard-nosed, close defense. The first thing you could notice with the different look of PET would be the play of Carrington Ward (12 pts.), who looked a little shaky in the first half, but would pick his game up with 10 points in the second half. The next thing would be the opportunity of PET having a little CHANCE, that would play big…or as people know him…Devante Chance (10 pts., 6 assists, 4 steals). Chance would play big and find anything and everything open. He would control the floor and find ways for Ward and Chris Green (6 pts.), & Baldwin to continue a march to try and get back into a lead for their team. At the end of the third quarter, PET would find the score locked up with FLC, at 33-33. The fourth quarter for most of the part, it would be a battle back and forth with Johnson, Griffin and Antonio Stickland (6 pts.), who helped pick up the load needed to help keep their team in it. But it seemed to not be enough, when Ward and Chance would take over the game and end it by hitting some clutch free throws. With Chance being 4-6 from the line in the last 2 minutes, he would be huge play for PET to end the game on a good note and end the game with a 51-39 score.

CATHOLIC RED
La Salle 43, Roman 38
WoW!...I remember the old Roman days…even though that was only 5 years ago, when I used to watch Charron Fisher (Overseas), Malik Perry (Ball State), Bobby Jordan (Drexel), Brad Wanamaker (Pitt), Mike Ringgold (Rider) and others. Oh, how the Roman days have changed. This was a totally different type of team. I haven’t seen a home Roman game since those days and things have slightly changed. As in: new coach, they have altered the gym a little, they have honorees' names on the floor, Under Armour is the sponsor, & there is a different team in town. I liked this game, not because of the scoring, because there really wasn’t any, but because of how the game was played. It looked like a college game out there. One thing I have to say, that hasn’t changed is…THEIR FAN BASE. Still the wild Roman fans I used to watch criticize players, even though they are no long considered the Broad Street Bullies. In this one, Roman got out to an early jump with quick play by Shafeek Taylor (10 pts.) who had 8 early points in the first quarter. He hit 2 quick threes and nice layup from a cut to the basket. Kevin Regan (8 pts.) seemed to give some extra help in the first and second quarter but would be matched by the player of the game Eddie Mitchell (17 pts.) who seem to be spectacular. You would think it would be great in the first place when he was playing against another star guard Rakeem Brookins (8 pts.) but Brookins, couldn’t find his game early with only 2 points in the first half. Along with Mitchell, weaving in and out of every defense that was thrown at him, and seeming to always go whichever way he wanted, no matter how the other team guarded him. You also had Troy Hockaday (9 pts, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks), who really provided a big lift by grabbing fierce boards, making great defensive plays and throwing in a little scoring to go with it.  La Salle seemed to return the favor to Roman by throwing the box and one from the beginning at Rakeem, to try and deny him the ball. Also a big lift I must say was Mike Poncia (8 pts.) who hit some clutch threes to keep La Salle away from getting sucked into a fierce crowd of fans. By the halftime point, the score was only 22-18 with La Salle leading, and they would never look back. In the third quarter, it seemed as though no one could score until the middle of the quarter and two free throws were shot. Poncia was able to hit another three in the second half, but Roman would make their comeback close thanks to Regan & Montana Mayfield (4 pts), who hit clutch shots to bring them within 3 with 1:20 left in the game. But with a key help-side defensive block by Hockaday, and with Mitchell being 7-10 from the free throw line in the fourth, it would give their team what they needed to finish off the game strong. Great game on a day that all the PUB GAMES WERE POSTPONED. ONE MONKEY DOESN’T STOP THE HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL SHOW. Great environment for a soon-to-be snowy night.

Dobbins 47, Bok 36
THE BATTLE OF THE TECHS...AMAZING WHEN THE SCHOOLS ARE SHAPED ALIKE.
Let’s talk about a game that really never had the hype from the beginning or the flashy plays or any of the extra stuff in it. But…and there always is…This game had so much thrill because of the anything but the game. This was the first time I was back to see a Dobbins home basketball game since I graduated from Dobbins. It’s always great to visit back and see some of the great faces around. When I first stepped into the gym, I saw nothing but fans in the stands, painted faces, good smelling food to snack on, and a big celebration for the 2 seniors of the team. The gym was totally packed and band was playing and everything was so loud, you couldn’t even hear yourself think. They haven’t been as big of an impact this year, but their hearts speaks for the team and everybody knew, they deserve every bit of cheer today. Ermon “Chops” McMillian (5 assist) and Demetrius Robinson (2 pts., 3 assist) were the lone seniors but contributed by stepping out on the edge and starting this game and providing some great fire for their team to get rolling. It all started with Jerrell Wright (20 pts. 15 rbs., 10 blks.), “Redz” Gilliam (6 pts.), & Robinson all hitting shots to put them out on a 8-0 lead. That caused Bok’s coach to call a timeout. He made a few adjustments and Bok would strike out of the timeout with a layup by Inza Dosso (10 pts.) and free throws by Josh Garnett (8 pts.) which took away from the atmosphere for a little while. I was really impressed with So. Marquise Graham (11 pts.) who found ways of keeping his team close and get opportunities for his team to draw close. At half, the score was 28-18 and going into the third quarter, there was nothing anybody could do about the noise, because the gym became even louder through the game. It also seem as though, there was nothing that Bok could do about Wright, who had about 6 in the first half and then him and Basir Fulmore (15 pts., 10 rbs., 8 stls.), who both seemed to turn it up a notch to keep their team on the winning side of the game. With Dobbins being a little slow in the 3rd quarter and only scoring 6 points. Bok scored 9 and came close with some momentum. After Bok missed some crucial free throws and Wright made his statement by having a monster dunk in the 3rd from the baseline, that took the crowd out of their mind. Fulmore and Wright took over the fourth and wedged the team to a 47-36 win.
On a side note:
Great to see Coach Lou Zambino, who was the d-back/receiver coach when I first entered varsity football for Dobbins, as we came in the same year on varsity. Now he has done a fabulous job as the head coach of the Mighty Mustangs. We got the chance to talk and he has some big plans for the team next year. He is also the AD/Girl’s Basketball Coach. Next Friday @ 3:15 they take on Central @ Central for the first round of the playoffs. Great to see Terrance Stafford (All Public Fullback) & Tamyra Laws (All Public/Daughter of Mansion’s Coach Stan Laws) & Tyniqua Henderson (All City) of the girls' Basketball team in attendance to show their support. Then Head Coach Dr. John Giannini was in attendance, always great to see him, as he’s doing a fabulous job with LaSalle’s men’s basketball team. What a great feeling it is to be back at 22nd & Lehigh’s famous gym. Great job by the Managers also….Monique and Briana are life savers with the score book.

Dobbins 71, Furness 54
Have you ever been to a game that has featured EVERYTHING? There were the good parts of the game. Then there were the bad parts of the game. Then you have the funny parts of the game and not to exclude . . . the cries of the game. Well, there were many. I have never been to a high school game with this many turnovers. It was horrifying to look. But there was definitely some great parts. Let’s start with the fact Dobbins was able to win this one, in some fashion, after keeping Furness in the game after the first quarter with only being up 5. Furness started off strong with buckets by Shakim Thomas (7 pts., 12 rbs.). He seemed to make adjustments to come out scoring early but didn’t get the chance to make more plays for his team. He was very strong and I commend him for what he was doing for his team. I also like a few things that Calvin Hill (13 pts.) did, but he seemed to have too many turnovers. With the addition of Lashan Byrd (14 pts.) and Christopher Marano (13 pts.), they kept tough with Dobbins at certain points. Here is where I thought things were a little rocky and funny. There was a lot of confusion with the scorebook and it never seemed to get really straightened out. Jerrell Wright (18 pts., 21 rbs.), by my count, had 22 points, but was said in Furness’ book to have 18. Either way, I believe he had a good game. It seemed as though, with only 5 points in the first half and the halftime speech by Coach Will “BJ” Johnson, he would spring into action and finish up strong. Seemed like Basir Fulmore (22pts., 10 rbs.) had 20, but they counted 22, but he did have some key rebounds to keep his team on the offensive end as scoring. He really exercised his ability to get to glass and find great lane to stop and pop his left handed jump shot. “Redz” Gilliam (10 pts.) seemed to start off rough, but would find his touch with quick opportunities to the basket and great assist to his teammates. I did notice that Dobbins looked a little light on their bench area with Trawick, Curtis, and Jones sitting out because of injuries. But Walter Lawrence (11 pts.) and Darnell Butts (3 pts.---who hit a clutch free throw to keep the momentum out of Furness hands after a 15-6 run). Great job to both teams, especially both coaches who showed they can definitely hold their own in this league, after a learning season last year.

MC&S 75, World Comm 66
These two teams for the last 3 years have been a true battle for their league. They seem to always get a nice-sized crowd to come out and support them and find the best way possible to do so. In this game there were two respected up and coming coaches, who have found the best ways possible of improving their success every year. In one corner Danny Jackson, MCS’s head coach and the person responsible for a lot of their success. Seems like he has put together one of the top teams this year. Not only in talent but in coaching. In the other corner Kenyatta McKinney, who has found ways of making his program improve in the wins column every year. I got to give it to both coaches. The came in with their teams ready. In the beginning of the game, it seemed as though the big men were going to be the true factor for their teams. Andre Thomas (4 pts.) & Alan Womack (9 pts.) seemed to hit easy buckets around the basket and then Anthony Guess (6pts.) scored quickly for each other’s team but seemed to slow down. Tyreek “Ty-Ty” Riddick (12 pts.), would not let them down with his extended 1st quarter play leading them into the half. The key factor in this game was the fact, people were picking up quick fouls and nobody seemed to be able to stay on the floor, excepted for Nigel Caldwell (18 pts. & 10 rebounds) and Markeith Mont (26 pts. & 12 rebounds). Caldwell was tremendous in his heroic efforts to keep his team ahead. Not only finding people in transition but getting important rebounds and making sure his team wouldn’t fall behind. WC was close, they would extend the lead. As the game went on, MC&S found themselves up 10 at half, 30-20 and it was just outstanding play by the guards who started to pick it up, when it came to Thomas Moore (15 pts.), Riddick, & Caldwell. Chris Stokes (9 pts.) showed he could bring it off the bench as a true factor (probably the best 6 man in the city) but found himself in the whole because of early foul trouble. Mont help keep his team in the game with an outstanding 26 points for the game, but didn’t seem to get much help during the early parts of the game. Moore had been hitting threes, which really opened up a lead on WC going in to the third quarter and there was nothing to be really done. By the fourth quarter with 5:50 left in the game, MC&S found themselves up 22 points. Caldwell had some flying dunks and great moves to the basket and seem to have everything fall for himself. Coach McKinney called a time-out and really enlightened his team and after that time out with 5:50 left…Shon Phillips (15 pts.), Jean Pierre Forte (7 pts.), Mont & Elijah Johnson (10 pts.) took over the game and found ways of intercepting the balls and by the time of a little over 1 minute left. WC was within 5 points, but never seemed to get over the top. With 32 points in the fourth quarter MC&S took back a nice margin and won by 9 with Caldwell, hitting some key free throws after WC started to match baskets for foul shots to make the comeback. Great game for both teams. I really like MC&S. I see them as one of the top 4 teams in the city.

RUCKER-PHILLY INVITATIONAL
Three Games at Southern

I was given the opportunity to attend one of the best
invitationals around. Even though they are in their first year, I
believe this really is going to be something huge. It was the first
annual Rucker-Philly Invitational sponsored by some great sponsors. I
believe Rucker came in and did a great job with the classic with six
of our up and coming teams in the city. Also with the great gym @
Southern High School with the help of Principal Brown. I want to also
thank Joe McCann and Eddie Hurtt for allowing me to be a part of
something special. There was some great basketball on hand with three
games. The first game was Frankford vs. Prep Charter and I can't
say enough about the efforts of both teams to try and get wins. The
first game final score was 81-59 with Frankford coming out with the
win. I believe Frankford led the whole game and had great play by
certain players that stood out. The MVP of this game, Steffon Poole,
seems to affect the game in so many ways. He wasn't the high scorer
but he seemed to make a huge impact on the game. He ended the game with
19 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assist. He made sure the game never got
close. Dehaven Brown scored 21 points, but seemed that creating on the
floor general mission. He saw the floor better than any other and seemed
to have 7 or 8 assists. I really thought he is going to be
something special and the x-factor of this team this year. Carl Wallace
was also huge and nothing short with the addition of 14 points. Prep
Charter always had their moments when they tried to get back in the
game and put their team in position to make a close come back. This was
the leadership of the sportsmanship award to Mark Wilmer, who seem to
come up with many opportunities for his team with 10 points about 11
rebounds. I like Mark's game and I think he's going be pretty good.
Matt Hankerson had a pretty decent game also with 10 points to but the
surprise in my eyes was Akhir Frazier and Eric Fulton. Frazier, a tall
guard, is a creator with the ability to handle the ball and make
some great solid moves. He wowed the crowd with his ability to do
whatever was needed to get to the basket but only ended up with 8
points. Fulton lead the team in scoring with 11. He shows great
leadership and promise.
**The next game was Bodine and World Comm. Bodine was limited to 7
players on their team but they showed that they were no pushover. With
Lynn Greer Sr. as the coach, he made sure his team was in the right
mind so they would fight and make sure they didn't go down on a hard
run. Even though Bodine made a come back, World Communications pulled
off the win, 62-57. Markeith Mont led the team with 24 points & 12 rebounds
and he was the MVP of the game. He started off 2-2 from the 3 point
line and 3 for 3 from the field. World Comm led by 9 at half but that
lead would change and make its turn on the side of Bodine, where they
begin to make the come back to tie the game up going into the fourth
quarter. World Comm had its help from players like Shon Phillips,
whose mother (Val Phillips) was known for her great play from her high
school and collegiate days. Shon lifted the team with an outstanding 14
points and 5 assists. Along with that help, came Elijah Johnson who
scored 9 points but showed the ability to run the floor and score in
transition. Bodine was led by Barry Brockington and Nadir Matthews.
These two players were outstanding and nothing short of consistent for
the team. Brockington had 18 points and put his team on his shoulders.
Matthews, to me, was the x-factor for his team and stepped up big with
some huge shots and scored 17 for the game.
**In the last game, Southern seemed to take stride and never look back.
Even though after halftime, they must have awakened Olney, which
decided to give Southern a scare. The scary part about the game was the
three prime time players of Olney taking over the game…Jabreil McLeod,
Ray Jaggon, and Kadeem Patterson all made their mark. Either one of
these three could have received the sportsmanship award. But McLeod did
everything but sell food for the day. He seemed to excite the crowd and
do what was needed to keep his team close in this game. With his 24
points, he marked his territory and helped his teammates pick up
opportunities to make plays also. Patterson and Jaggon, have always
came through for their team. Patterson scored 16 and Jaggon scored 19
to complement McLeod. As for Southern, which took their home floor
and really ended the invitational with great play, it all started and
ended with the MVP of game, Shaquille Gaskins. I knew he would be big
this year, but this was the show stage for them and he didn’t
disappoint anyone with 27 points. With the game going into
3 OTs. You couldn’t expect this game to end on a bad note. Haywood
Henderson is usually the primary target and showcase but he was just
fine with the second role for today and he took things to another level
with complimenting Gaskins with 11 points. Juwan Campbell played pretty
well with 11points and Antwain Rucker changed the momentum of the stage
with 9 points and 3 of those big ones came from a 3 point shot in the
3 OT to help them get the win.

DEC. 25
UPDATE ON ORIGINAL SEASON OUTLOOK . . .

Now after analyzing and looking over every team and the transfers and wonderful player and coaches of this year. There will be great play and every team starts off the season with a 0-0 record meaning no one is above the rest. This list will help give a great idea of what to expect this year, not just for the people who are fans but also for the coaches who are looking for players at any of the levels. If you are looking for D1, D2, D3, JUCO, OR NAIA…Philadelphia has it all and I hope that you get the idea of what to expect this year. Basketball has continued to improve and will not be a shocker at all this year. I think we can compete with the rest of the country but here’s a great up close look. Happy Holidays and Good Luck to all the teams this year.

“The Pub”
Division A:
This division is all about stardom with the appearance of the VA Tech signee Tyrone Garland. He will look to help lead his team to a division title and 4A title this year both city and states, when Bartram is clearly the favorite for this division. He has good help, but isn’t much further ahead from Frankford, who returns a solid crew of players and brings along Shaq Duncan from Prep Charter. They will look to make some noise. Southern and Olney also will contest with their group of kids that can make it happen. Even with Southern losing players, they have a good nucleus to rebound. Look for all the other teams to come very close to making and impact especially Central. They might not be as good as when I was in high school in 05, but they will definitely turn some heads if slept on.
Tyrone Garland (Bartram/Va Tech)…if you think this kid, if not the quickest, has to be the closest, quickest killer in the entire city. This ACC product has showed off everything, from jump shot to ability to penetrate and dish the ball in everyway possible. It will definitely hard to stop him this year.
Haywood Henderson (Southern)…With the departure of Deshon Minnis and Jamir Hanner, it’s going to take a strong player with strong character to keep this team from falling off their game this year. I think Henderson will be it for them. With the help of Gaskins, you can throw a dart at either name and find they won’t let you down this year.
Kadeem Patterson (Olney)…He has a huge surprise with his big and nice size frame. He can penetrate and contribute in every different way. I like his game and he will be huge in this division this year. Expect big things from him.
Donte Williams (Washington)...21 points per game last year…who says he can’t score. He will show anybody up and has no problem with making it happen for others. He has a great feel for the game and we shouldn’t expect anything less than what he produced last year.
Shaq Duncan (Frankford/Niagara)…Transfer from Prep Charter, but has the ability to dominated the inside. Probably the most athletic big man in the city. He really shows people what he’s made of. Under control could be one of the top 10 players in the city.
Others to watch:
Dehaven Brown, Steffon Poole & Carl Wallace (Frankford), Quasim Jones, Zaahir Allen & Darnell Lane (Bartram), Brandon Smith & Josh Welles (Central), Ramadan Abdullah (Germantown), Tareek Massey, Mike Wilson & Kenny Edwards (King), Rickey Savage (Lincoln), Devon Finney (Kensington), Jabril McLeod & Ray Jaggon (Olney), Cashad McFadden & Dante Glover (Overbrook), Anthony Fuscellaro, Yusef Savage & Dan Patriarca (Northeast), Shaquille Gaskins, Mac Stokes, & Rodney Chandler (Southern), Michael Clemmons & Micah Peeler (University City)

Division B:
Gratz seems to not feel the sting from losing a legendary coach to another team in the conference that will compete heavily for this division and other accolades. I see Gratz and FLC right up there in the top. If Philadelphia Electric stays consistent with their play and guys work together with their talent, we can definitely see them up there at the end. I also like Dobbins to contend with great play from Jerrell Wright. Get ready for a great year with them. The sleeper in this division is Swenson, don’t expect them to lay down. This division will battle close with great play from many different teams.
Tyree Smith (Gratz)…This is very good guard/forward and has the ability to get up and defend any position and create opportunities for himself on the offensive end. He has the ability to put others in position to contribute also, but he will really be huge this year.
Jerrell Wright (Dobbins)…Cant it get any better inside as a big man in the city. It might not get any better at this age. He’s only a Jr. and has the ability to play at the division 1 level now. He has the skills and does very well on the floor and positioning. Great Kid.
Antoine “Ness” Bland (Gratz)…Plays football also but his kid is like DeJuan Blair in the pub. If you think you can get to his rebounds and inside buckets, you got another thing coming because his wide body and ability to box out is just awesome.
Jerrod Johnson (FLC)…Plays bigger than what he is. He has the ability to score on any position and does the things to contribute in bigger ways then imagined. I like this guy, he has a great personality and shows up every game, regardless of what you might think.
Kervyn Haynes (Swenson)…Great heart, puts the ball on the floor and goes hard every possession. I can see doing more for his team this year.
Others to watch:
Ermon McMillan & Basir Fulmore (Dobbins), Mark Houston (E&S), Andrew Reed, Anthony Brown & Erik Bradwell (Fitzsimons), Turhan Griffin (FLC), Jamal Dawkins (Franklin Towne), Calvin Hill (Furness), Andrew Moye (Gratz), Ramel Wright & David Garcia (Mastbaum), Malcolm Lyles &  Wanyae Hartsfield (Mastery South), Mark Blount & Mike Gray (Penn), Chris Green, Carrington Ward, & Devonte Chance (Phila. Electric), Anthony Patterson & Justin Bailey (Roxborough), John Hardy (Swenson), Lemeir Mitchell, Raymond Nesbitt & Naquil Jones (West Philly)

Division C:
Imhotep looks to be deep this year and expect nothing but great things with the addition of Tanksley, who can do anything from the outside to the inside game, but don’t think twice about Strawberry Mansion being close to them with the play of DJ Newbill. I also like Comm Tech and Prep Charter to compete in many ways and make a push to put pressure in this division, which I think is the best division in the city. Del Valley is my sleeper. They will contest heavily this season and will look to make a big impact. This is tough conference with other teams making their adjustments since last year and improving like Sayre and Hope.
DJ Newbill (Strawberry Mansion)…Should be player of this division. He has the ability to play any position on the floor. His 6’4” frame has created match up programs but is great in the transition and hitting pull up jumpers.
Ameen Tanskley (Imhotep)…Left Prep Charter, but finds him self in a great position. He will contribute huge numbers and will not look back on anything in the past. He has the mindset set of a great force. Hard to handled, especially because he’s a lefty.
Sherman Blanford (Comm. Tech)…Puts big numbers up and plays bigger than what he is. He does whatever you need him to do on the floor. He makes great decisions and Helps the team reach great heights thru the season. I know he will contribute bigger than last year.
Matt Hankerson (Prep Charter)…I see him contributing hugely for the team that lost quit a few players. He is the lone senior and I see good numbers from him, if he sticks to the game he has. Quick for his size and very good when under control. Gets great positioning.
Rysheen Dorn (Del. Valley)…Can score anywhere on the floor. Always finds his way to get where needs to be. I think he has the total package. Very reliable and makes everyone better around him.
Others to watch:
Darrell Ockimey (Bracetti), Nadir Matthews & Barry Brockington (Bodine), Shaquille Shannon (Comm. Tech), Fred Ruff (Del. Valley), Shahiyd Bullock (Douglas), Joseph “Jo-Jo” McClain & Walter Bailey (Esperanza) Kenny Bey-Brown, Shawn Penn, & Jeff Giddings (Franklin), Malik Wesley (Freire), John Creighton, Steven Randall, & Jamere Wilcox (Hope), David Appolon, Tyhiem Perrin, Earl Brown & Erik Copes (Imhotep), Kirk Wright, Dana Taylor & Troy Yancy (Lamberton), Tyler Hunt & Mike Sturdivant (Masterman), Allan Dempster (Phila. Academy), Mark Wilmer, Akhir Frazier & Laquan Stephens (Prep Charter), Josh Collins (Saul), Donte Goodman, Darian Hamlin, & Marquis Henson (Sayre), Khyree Wooten, Khalil Meadows, Saadiq Berry & Eric Jefferson (Mansion), Rasheed Jordan & Jearl Taylor (Vaux)

Division D:
This is no longer a sleeping division, where people would push them over. With the addition of teams like Constitution, this should be a very interesting division this year. It will definitely put hair on the PUB’s chest about what type of talent can come from 1A and 2A schools. I expect a challenge for the top with MCS (like usual), Constitution (with the ability to get much talent and help from different players), World Communication (with great coaching and a solid transfer added to a dominate force of a WF), Boy’s Latin will be no push over with the outstanding playing of their little fierce guard. Robeson will be really close. I pick Mastery North as a sleeper because of their great abilities to play together but don’t be shock to see a battle with all the teams like Palumbo and Randolph.
Mark Mont (World Comm.)…Trust me when I say this, he’s the most underrated player in the city. 6’5” guard/forward that can do it from anywhere on the floor. Believed to be contesting for MVP of this division. When motor start…never stops.
Maurice Watson (Boy’s Latin)...He is one of the quickest guards in the city and has the ability to score anywhere. Makes the game interesting and has the ability to be a trust point guard if you force him to do so, which creates opportunities for others to score. Don’t look at height, see his heart…He will do anything you think he can’t.
Xavier Harris (Constitution)…He is a force inside and has a great wing span. He really has a great sense for the block and when he really plays, can be unstoppable during long periods of the game. Really has great potential and will be a huge help for this program.
Erik Raleigh (Constitution)…Another big time big man…6’8” big man that can do it all. Defensively, he is stronger but can definitely put fear in defenses with his good touch and ability to score inside. Don’t sleep on him, or he’ll dunk on you.
Jay Harris (Robeson)…With a coming out last year, he will have a huge bull’s eye on his back but he should be definitely willing to take it to the next level. He will score anyway possible. Short but plays with a big game.
Others to watch:
Therence Brown, Isaiah Gans, Wafeeq Jamal, & Zach Ruffin (Boy’s Latin), Matt Powers (CAPA), Harris Griffin (Elverson), Teron Brown & Harrison Johnson (Future), Jamal Jenkins & Carl Guignard (GAMP), Khalik Long & Will Wingate (Mastery North), Andre Thomas, Thomas Moore, Nigel Caldwell & Tyreek Riddick (MCS), Isiah Clark, Harold Gordon, & Bryton Hawthorne (New Media), Anthony Wallace, Devin Uqdah, Mike Sawan, & Maurice Harris (Palumbo), Kyle McNair (Parkway) Allan Dempster, Devon Shorter, & Jerome Maynard (Phila. Academy), Amir Stringfield & Samir Hill (Randolph), Xavier Brown & Jamair Williams (Robeson), Joseph McClain (Saul), Kenney Paul & Naadir Ginyard (Science Leadership), Jean-Pierre Forte & Shon Phillips (World Comm.), Abdul King & Marvin Champ (Constitution)

“Catholic League”

Red Division:
I see nothing but great play from the division this year. They have the talent and the ability to shake up the state competition with the play of teams like Roman Catholic who received some good help from other players and then not to mention North Catholic who still have a fire in their belly about shutting down after this year. I expect them to go out wit a bang. Prep is never a push over and Nardi will make sure of that. LaSalle is my sleeper. They have a great group of kids who can play and all the rest of these teams will be fired up for a great year of basketball.
Rakeem Brookins (Roman Catholic/Tulane)…The returning scoring champ of the catholic league and has the ability to penetrate and do anything on the floor. Has a great pull up jump shot and creates opportunities for others. He has a lot of energy and should be MVP this year. Don’t be upset if you can’t play him, most people can’t.
Mike Terry (North Catholic/Boston U.)…He really is a good player and has all the abilities to produce wherever he goes. This year will be huge for him, because of all the issues behind North shutting down. He will put up numbers for the curtain closer for the school.
Woody Redding (North Catholic)…Very solid point guard. Has ability to penetrate and pull defenses to him in order to create shots for others or himself. He has a great touch with the ball and plays like a bigger guard. Very quick and has great potential.
Joe Nardi (SJ Prep)…Can’t get enough of this kid. Makes all the right plays. When you aren’t looking, he will find ways of making players all over the floor. Don’t doubt his talent and his ability to play the floor. Vision is pretty good also. Don’t count prep out.
Jamal Melvin (Bonner)…Worth every minute on the floor. He will be looked to more this season to make more plays and contribute for his team and make sure they do what’s needed to get far this season. Look for him to make a huge jump his game, regardless of size.
Others to watch:
Scott Slade & Keefer Francis (Bonner), Zach Hirst & Seamus Radtke (Judge), Eddie Joyner-Mitchell & Troy Hockaday (LaSalle), Jaleel Mack & Bob Makor  (North Catholic), Anthony Bertolino & Dan Kearney (O’Hara), Anthony Mayo, Kevin Regan, & Montana Mayfield (Roman Catholic), Eric Fleming & Anthony Magallanes (Ryan), Sean Brophy (St. Joe’s Prep)

Blue Division:
Even though Neumann-Goretti seems to be the favorite to win this all, they might not be if they sleep hard. They have the potential to make some great moves with 4 starts being d1 signees and some others on the team that will be in the future, but I expect them to have classic battles with other teams in the division such as Carroll, who don’t return everyone but return enough from that state championship team to be a definite threat to every team in the division. West Catholic is lead by one of the fastest guards in state. He will make great appearances one the floor and will not back down and will help lead his team back to greatness, Dougherty like North Catholic has that leaving out fire in their belly and I expect them to make great moves this year. My sleep is Wood, with one of the best big men. They will make a great push and put pressure on everyone else to make sure they are not slept on. I expect nothing but great things from this conference this year.
Tony Chennault (Neumann-Goretti/Wake Forest)…another ACC player who will look to take another MVP this year. He really has the ability to create for others, is a better shooter than he or others might think. Really has the app for defensive specialist. With control, could be the most dangerous guard in this state. Look for d1 group of guards to play all big this year. DUREN, FULTON, JONES.
  DJ Irving (Carroll)
…He really put on a show this summer and has all the potential to make every play, you may can’t. He has great vision and is the identity of what a real point guard is. Everybody would love to have this kid on the floor for them. His intensity is great. Remember he did win a state championship, if I recall, he was the MVP.
Aquil Younger (West Catholic)...We you see this guy, just remember to brace yourself. His quickness is remarkable. When he’s on, he’s on. He got everything going for him. He’s the best penetrator in the city probably. He can get to the inside in no times flat. I’ve seen him go head to head with every guard in the city and he gets nothing but respect.
Fran Dougherty (Wood)…He will be huge in their success this year. I expect more out of them this year. If he has improved like I know his work ethic on the court. He will be dominating the inside and make defenses draw inside which will leave outside shooters open. Good luck stopping him.
Brandyn Wims (Dougherty)…I love this kid’s attitude towards the game. No holds bar. It’s all or nothing. He really proves to people every time, how well of a player he can be. Don’t leave this kid open, he will find ways of scoring from any where. He will go out big this year, especially with dealing with another school close down.
Others to watch:
Juan’ya Green & Ben Mingledough (Carroll), Ike Robinson, Mike Payne & Andrew Schaefer (Con. Egan), Brandon Brown & Art Comas (Dougherty), Robbie Griffith, Dave Tornetta, & Billy Malescio (Kenn. Ken), Mike Barr (Lansdale Catholic), Kenyatta Long (McDevitt), Danny Stewart, Mustafaa Jones, Tyreek Duren, & Lamin Fulton (Neumann-Goretti), Kiwan Murray (West Catholic), Joe Getz, Doug Macrone & Brian O’Grady (Wood)

“Inter-ac”
This is one of those years for the Inter-ac where people expect the play to struggle. I see nothing but great talent and improvement for the future. They have a lot of good players for this year in class and also some great up coming players. Expect Germantown Academy & Malvern to really fight tough at the top, but nothing will be given, that’s where Penn Charter, Episcopal, Chestnut Hill and Haverford will try and make things look a little different then we think. I expect a great year and prayerfully…one of these days, they will join the PIAA or something, because I would really like to see these teams get more games then what they play.
Cameron Ayers (Germantown Academy/Bucknell)…He’s a very talented player. Has a lot of history and background behind him and his family playing basketball. He has all the right tools. He works hard and makes smart decision. Very solid player.
DeQuann Walker (Malvern)…I expect him to give that lift for his team this year. He has the ability to create for himself. He makes the game look easy sometimes. Reminds of his teammate Church, who both have great talent and look to push for the title this year.
Lamon Church (Malvern)…He really has it all. He might be the next big thing from this league. He makes things look so easy. He makes everybody around him so much better. Can guard the best of them. Offensive skills are amazing though.
  AJ Jones (Haverford)
…Has the same abilities and will get more shots this year. Expect big things from him on both sides of the ball.
Todd Cramer (Chesnut Hill)…I like this kid. He really plays bigger than he is. He really does a lot of dirty work and will be asked to do more than he did last year. Has a lot of potential and is very strong in the inside and talented around the blocks.
Others to watch:
Pat Connaghan (Chestnut Hill), Isaiah Baker & Allen Heggs (Episcopal), Austin Curry (Germantown Academy), Andrew Acker (Haverford), Ryan Creighton & Brendan Kilpatrick (Malvern), Tom Noonan (Penn Charter)

NOV. 20
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE SEASON . . .

THIS BEGINNING OF THE BASKETBALL SEASON HAS BEEN GREAT. I am currently working with my school's (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) men’s basketball team, which is ranked 18th in the country. We feature 3 Philadelphian-area guys -- Thomas Young, Plymouth Whitemarsh; Chris Edwards (North Catholic) & Kevin Stewart (Academy Park). One of the grad assistant coaches is a former Big East Champ with the University of Pittsburgh, Maurice Polen (West Philly). We are looking forward to having a great season. On the 29th, we will be coming to Philadelphia to play Holy Family. I hope people are able to come out and check us in action. We have just finished our ACC trip against Maryland, Wake Forest & Georgia Tech, who we all played tough against. Especially GA Tech, taking them in an overtime thriller.
As the basketball season begins, we turn to look at “THE PUB”, the Catholic League, and of course the Inter-ac. All these leagues will be bringing many different forms of great basketball this year. This might be considered the best year of basketball in a while with all eyes laid on the top prospects who have committed to big time schools. I expect big things and players to step up from last year and create more opportunities for their game to grow. Here’s my breakdown for the upcoming year:

Note from Ted: Transfers are very common these days. We'll update school info, as we receive it. Thanks.

“The Pub”
Division A: Stardom
Tyrone Garland (Bartram/Va Tech)…if you think this kid, if not the quickest, has to be the closest, quickest killer in the entire city. This ACC product has showed off everything, from jump shot to ability to penetrate and dish the ball in every way possible. It will definitely be hard to stop him this year.
Deshon “Biggie” Minnis (Southern)…Not the fastest guard in the city, but has the ability to make sure you don’t stop him. He will go around, through and just come up with ways to make it happen this year. I know he will be able to demolish anything and everything he lays eyes on this year. If you expect anything less than a great year…You really can’t.
Jamir Hanner (Southern)…This 6’6” big man has a great touch and the ability to do many different things on different parts of the floor. His wingspan is incredible and I know he will contribute huge to his team. Blocked shots are also a specialty. Watch for that.
Donte Williams (Washington)...21 points per game last year…who says he can’t score. He will show anybody up and has no problem with making it happen for others. He has a great feel for the game and we shouldn’t expect anything less than what he produced last year.
Shaq Duncan (Frankford/Niagara)…Transfer from Prep Charter has the ability to dominated the inside. Probably the most athletic big man in the city. He really shows people what he’s made of. Under control, could be one of the top 10 players in the city.
  Others to watch for:
Dehaven Brown, Steffon Poole & Carl Wallace (Frankford), Quasim Jones (Bartram), Brandon Smith & Josh Welles (Central), Ramadan Abdullah (Germantown), Tareek Massey, Thomas Moore (now at MC&S) & Mike Wilson (King), Kadeem Patterson (Olney), Cashad McFadden & Warren Dogan (?Overbrook?), Haywood Henderson & Shaquille Gaskins (Southern), Brandon Baynes (University City)

Division B: Up & Coming
Tyree Smith (Gratz)…This is very good guard/forward and has the ability to get up and defend any position and create opportunities for himself on the offensive end. He has the ability to put others in position to contribute also, but he will really be huge this year.
Jerrell Wright (Dobbins)…Can't get any better inside as a big man in the city. It might not get any better at this age. He’s only a Jr. and has the ability to play at the Division 1 level now. He has the skills and does very well on the floor and positioning. Great Kid
Antoine “Ness” Bland (Gratz)…Plays football also but his kid is like DeJuan Blair in the pub. If you think you can get to his rebounds and inside buckets, you got another think coming because his wide body and ability to box out is just awesome.
Jerrod Johnson (FLC)…Plays bigger than what he is. He has the ability to score on any position and does the things to contribute in bigger ways then imagined. I like this guy. He has a great personality and shows up every game, regardless of what you might think.
Kervyn Haynes (Swenson)…Great heart, puts the ball on the floor and goes hard every possession. I can see him doing more for his team this year.
Others to watch:
Jermaine Flowers (Bok), Ermon McMillan & Basir Fulmore (Dobbins), Andrew Reed & Robert Scott (Fitzsimons), Turhan Griffin (FLC), Scott Davis (Franklin Towne), Andrew Moye (Gratz), Ramel Wright (Mastbaum), Malcolm Lyles &  Wanyae Hartsfield (Mastery South), Mark Blount & Mike Gray (Penn), Chris Green, Jabreil McLeod (Phila. Electric), Marque Griffin (Roxborough), Lemeir Mitchell & Naquil Jones (West Philly).

Division C: Dangerous
DJ Newbill (Strawberry Mansion)…Should be player of this division. He has the ability to play any position on the floor. His 6’4” frame has created matchup programs but is great in the transition and hitting pull up jumpers. Plays with a Gibert Arenas look.
Ameen Tanskley (Imhotep)…Left Prep Charter, but finds himself in a great position. He will contribute huge numbers and will not look back on anything in the past. He has the mindset of a great force. Hard to handle, especially because he’s a lefty.
Shaquille Shannon (Comm. Tech)…Quick guard on the floor, has great vision and always does what is possible. Doesn’t go outside his game. Has great speed bursts and defensive awareness. Watch your pocket, he might rob you of the ball 3 or 4 times a game.
Matt Hankerson (Prep Charter)…I see him contributing hugely for the team that lost quite a few players.
Curt Thomas & Darrell Ockimey (Bracetti), Sherman Blanford & Carrington Ward (Comm. Tech), Fred Ruff & Khalil Meadows (Del. Valley), Shahiyd Bullock (Douglas), Kenny Bey-Brown, Shawn Penn, Jeff Giddings (Franklin), Tyreek Riddick (now at MC&S), Earl Brown & Malik Wesley (Freire), John Creighton (Hope), David Appolon, Jamal Jones, Tyhiem Perrin & Erik Copes (Imhotep), Kyle McNair & Mamadou Diakite (now at Constitution) (Parkway),  Mark Wilmer, Akhir Frazier & Laquan Stephens (Prep Charter), Donte Goodman (Sayre), Khyree Wooten, Saadiq Berry & Eric Jefferson (Mansion), Jahson Carrington (Vaux).

Division D: The Sleepers
  Mark Mont (World Comm.)
…Trust me when I say this, he’s the most underrated player in the city. 6’5” guard/forward that can do it from anywhere on the floor. Believed to be contesting for MVP of this division. When motor start…never stops.
Maurice Watson (Boys' Latin)...He is one of the quickest guards in the city and has the ability to score anywhere. Makes the game interesting and has the ability to be a trusted point guard if you force him to do so, which creates opportunities for others to score.
Erik Raleigh (Bodine -- now at Constitution)…Another big time big man…6’8” big man that can do it all.
Barry Brockington (Bodine), Therence Brown, Isaiah Gans, Wafeeq Jamal, & Zach Ruffin (Boy’s Latin), Matt Powers (CAPA), Teron Brown & David Rogers (Future), Jamal Jenkins (GAMP), Khalik Long & Will Wingate (Mastery North), Andre Thomas (MCS), Isiah Clark, Harold Gordon, & Bryton Hawthorne (New Media), Anthony Wallace, Devin Uqdah, Mike Sawan, & Maurice Harris (Palumbo), Allan Dempster, Devon Shorter, & Jerome Maynard (Phila. Academy), Amir Stringfield & Samir Hill (Randolph), Xavier Brown & Jamair Williams (Robeson), Joseph McClain (Saul), Kenney Paul & Naadir Ginyard (Science Leadership), Evan Herbert, Coron Fletchers, Jean-Pierre Forte & Shon Phillips (World Comm.), Abdul King (Constitution).

“Catholic League”

Red Division: Contention
Rakeem Brookins (Roman Catholic/Tulane)…The returning scoring champ of the catholic league and has the ability to penetrate and do anything on the floor. Has a great pull up jump shot and creates opportunities for others. He has a lot of energy and should be MVP this year. Don’t be upset if you can’t play him, most people can’t.

Blue Division: Fascinating
Tony Chennault (Neumann-Goretti/Wake Forest)…another ACC player who will look to take another MVP this year. He really has the ability to create for others, is a better shooter than he or others might think. Really has the app for defensive specialist. With control, could be the most dangerous guard in this state. Look for d1 group of guards to play all big this year. DUREN, FULTON, JONES.

“Inter-ac”

Cameron Ayers (Germantown Academy/Bucknell)…He’s a very talented player. Has a lot of history and background behind him and his family playing basketball. He has all the right tools. He works hard and makes smart decision. Very solid player.
Omari Grier (Episcopal)…He isn’t Wayne Ellington or Gerald Henderson, but he will be looked at to fill the void and be able to contribute like they did when they were there. He has the ability to penetrate defenses and shoot deep. Scoring champ last year…that might not change.  (No longer at Episcopal.)
Lamon Church (Malvern)…He really has it all. He might be the next big thing from this league. He makes things look so easy. He makes everybody around him so much better. Can guard the best of them. Offensive skills are amazing though.

SUMMER WRAP-UP
Sonny Hills Future Star Tournament
Another Great Summer is starting to slow down. I thank everyone for their inspiration and help this summer for making my experience great. This season, I should be working with my school's (Indiana University of Pa) men's basketball team and getting set to graduate in December. This season will be great because our team in one week, will be playing MARYLAND, WAKE FOREST AND GEORGIA TECH....AND I'LL BE COMING HOME PROBABLY WITH THE TEAM WHEN WE TAKE ON HOLY FAMILY IN PHILADELPHIA. I think this has been a great opportunity and I want to thank everyone who has been a part of experience for the summer and my career future.

Here are a few: Ted Silary (Of course...you were my beginning...I can never forget about you), The Howard Family (Ky, Ash, Mo, Momma, Twin & SNICKERS . . . can't 4get him). Rahim Thompson & The Chosen League Family (For seeing my future), Sonny Hill & the whole Staff & Program (My Grassroots with basketball), Malik Perry & Perry Family (Bonez & Mom Dukes), IUP Men's Basketball Team (Coach Lombardi, Coach J & Coach Fite), To the Curry Family, To all the Coaches & Players I've met this summer from around the country, Derek Thompson & All Star Weekend Staff (Dover, DE), Patrick Coombs & the Reebok Family, Matt from NY (Converse Family), Anthony Gilbert (Nike & AXG), Chris Rivers (Adidas), & last but not least Jeremy Landis (Driven Athletics).
  . . .
Now for the tournament. Another year for the nationally famous Future Stars Tournament. I think this tournament was really amazing and showed it could keep the potential of future college basketball players to another level. This tournament brought some some of the best of the best teams around together to battle it out for the ultimate prize of being the best team named in the 2009 Sonny Hill Future Stars Tournament. First, kudos to the Raiders for winning the championship, especially with the display of my MVP OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP Travis Robinson- 6'4"-Friends' Central,  who scored 30 points in the championship with 5 threes that were just incredible to erased a 7-point lead by The Chosen League. TCL was led by Markus Kennedy- 6'9" Winchendon Prep/Villanova, who ended the game 25 points, but had a remarkable first half. Another player in the championship that helped the Raiders lead their team to a chip was Rakeem Brookins- 5'9" Roman Catholic, who was remarkable the whole tournament with his ability to drive to the basketball or stop and pop or just create opportunities for others and play great defense. The MVP of the entire tournament Dominic Morris (looks like Michael Beasley to me)- 6'6" Friends' Central- played extremely well in the post and hesitated for nothing. Found every way possible to make sure his team got what they needed. Jaylen Bond- 6'9" Plymouth Whitemarsh- showed he can get to the basket quick and leap for rebounds and block shots. As for The Chosen League and the 11-point loss, they played extremely well. Being ranked 5th in the tournament into the playoffs but coming out number 2 out of 40 was remarkable, especially with being the only team that played 7 games in 2 days with key injuries to players like John Johnson- 6' 0" Girard College  (who played extremely well in 3 games; in one he scored 30 against Team Emerge) and Ky Howard 6'3" Shipley, who was the the Sonny Hill Future Leauge MVP, who showed some promise for the future. The surprise of the tournament came from 6'8"/Murrell Dobbins- Jerrell Wright, who came into this tournament unnoticed but left with some hardware based on his play through the tournament. Every school should be breaking their neck to see this kid play. He has the ability to finish with his back to the basket, or face up. Showed his ability to rebound and finish with either hand....AND I'LL LET YOU ON TO SOMETHING...HE'S LEFT HANDED. This team also had a key role player named Abdul King- 6'3" Roman Catholic, who hit a game-winning layup after his team was down 17 at half against Cecil Kirk, who was led by 2 great future basketball players -- Cleveland Melvin 6'7" Notre Dame Prep  & Durand Johnson 6'5" Parkville . Team Philly had great play this tournament also with the lights of Willis Nicholson- 5'10" Cherokee, Ameen Tanksley- 6'5" Imhotep, & Juan'ya Green- 6'3" Archbishop Carroll. These three were legends in their own mind and couldn't really tell them, they couldn't get the job done. They played extremely and hats off to those three. Team Philly 2 had one player that just blew everybody's mind when he got on the court and that was Amile Jefferson 6'8" Friends Central. This tall/young guy can play the game. Never hesitates and always puts his team in the best position to win. Sonny Hill's youngest team had a stud with the mentality that he's definitely ready for high school and that is rising freshmen Miles Overton- 6'3" ANC. This kid has a lot to his game and can shoot the ball pretty well. still has some polishing to do in high school, he's really up there when it comes to his game. If he sticks with John Hardnett, he'll really learn what it takes to get to the NBA like his dad...Doug Overton (DOBBINS!..HAD TO THROW THAT OUT...HEEEY!...I WENT THERE). Also from that team, Thomas Moore 5'9" MLK Jr. HIgh, played pretty well also, definitely a threat when needed and the Red team played extremely well together. This Gold Sonny Hill team had a great tournament and played some great basketball. I thought they were going to make the playoffs, but missed it by the point system by a little. This team has quite a bit of good players, but I more fined of Savon Goodman- 6'4" ANC & Warren Gillis- 6'2" ANC. These two play with extreme heart and never let anything go without a fight especially when playing the champs in their pool...The RAIDERS. Philly USA had a really good team, but couldn't get the first win against Team Philly 2, who played extrememly well. Their play for the whole tournament was extremely well with the leadership of Jamir Hanner- 6'7" Southern & Tyreek Duren 6'0" Neumann-Goretti, who both have had great summers and improved big time in every aspect of their game. Deshon Minnis 6'3" Southern & Lamin Fulton 5'11" Neumann Goretti also showed great spurts and proved they can hang with some good players. This was another team that could have been in the playoffs, but based on the point system they failed to do so. I enjoyed the great play of the Trenton One Ballers, whose coach is one of my favorites to always see...Coach Tim Gibson; always brings his team mentally focused to come and win some ball games. He won his pool by the leadership of some good players like Darrin Elam- 6'5" T.C.H.S., who should he can step up and give a one percent effort every time he stepped on the court. Love this team for all their hard work and heart they put into the game. Team Phenom had two solid players that came out to play made things look really good on the basketball end of things. Joey Gripper- 5'10" & Jabril Trawick- 6'4" (both Abington Friends), who played very well together and showed they will stick together and played very hard at all cost. They showed really good spurts and did some things to let their presence be felt on the court. Hood Enriched had DJ Newbill- 6'4" Strawberry Mansion, who showed he can play at anytime, anywhere. He really has the idea of how to play the game and be a great player. Shaq Duncan- 6'9" Frankford, played pretty good too. He has a lot of athletic ability and has the willingness to try and get the job done. Philly Pride was a team that got in to the Playoffs on the back of Tyron Garland 6'2" Bartram/Virginia Tech, who is nothing short of a assassin on the court. He shows the ability to do whatever is necessary to win the game and he makes his team so much better every time he steps on the floor. I like this guy's game, relentless, like John Johnson. I think those two guys have the most competitive spirit, I know. Pal of Delaware was led by rising senior Marcus Porter- 6'6" Howard (DE), this guy can really play the game of basketball, his IQ is very high and is able to showcase his skills in different ways. He seems to imagine his game after Kevin Durant, but this kid goes inside and outside. I love this guy and D1 schools should be after him also.
Tyree Johnson- 5'10" Penn Wood... I love the heart of this player to fall into place with the team and show his ability to control the game with this point guard skills. I think he's the best pure point guard in the city in any class, honestly. He reminds me how Ronald Moore is; he's a true general and directs everybody to every spot on the floor. He really has something that most point guards lack and he really shows the ability to step up big in big games . . .         I believe every team had that player than can really play the game and show up when need, but I felt as though these guys really stood out and showed me they can play at the next level against good competition. I hope that they will continue to get better and improve their skills. It's been a long summer but I hope this will help people get an idea of the talent of the future and present that is out there in the area. Congratz to all those who attended the 2009 Future Stars Tournament and hoping for a great finish of a summer. You may be able to check me around this year, prayerfully, at different events and games. Good luck to all this up coming school year and make sure you keep your focus on your books.

HITTIN' THE SUMMER TRAIL
All About Work Ethic
This summer I dedicated myself to seeing some real good basketball. I was dealing with many different people and different types of programs in order to just get an idea of where I am headed. I currently have one more semester left in college and it's been a real treat working with such great talent all around the city (on and off the court). This summer I was blessed with the opportunity to work in 2  leagues, 3 camps, 2 tournaments and a host of other events that involve various sneaker companies. Along with doing this, I really got the chance to learn my history behind the game of basketball and learn what really goes through the mind of players. I love the game of basketball and have ever since I started watching my best friend Malik Perry (Roman Catholic, Ball State University). I never thought about how much hard work it takes to try and take your game to the next level. In working with the Sonny Hill League, it always feel pretty good to be down there because of the tradition and because that's where I started growing my roots. From there, I got the chance to work in the Chosen League @ 10th & Olney (Cherashore Park) presented by Rahim Thompson, Da Villa, Mitchell & Ness, & Nike Basketball. Watching this league gave me another perspective in seeing what the game was like at a different level. I got the chance to watch players go from different leagues and use their talents in different manners. In doing so, I was given the chance to go to Dallas, Texas, for the Reebok Underclassmen Breakout Camp. This was my first involvement in a camp so national. I got the chance to check the facilities of SMU and meet some great people down there and be involved in one of the best camps around. It was great to see so many different types of players. I got the chance to go down there with 4 players from the Reebok Headliner in Philadelphia -- Xavier Harris (Constitution Charter), Aquil Younger (West Catholic), Markeith Mont (World Communications) & Ky Howard (Shipley); all are rising juniors. I'd never gotten the chance to be around 4 guys that worked so hard to improve their game each and everyday in order to take it to new heights. I got the chance to really get in touch with the players on a personal basis. I see the fire in their eyes and how much they want to improve and, along with that, be great students on and off the court.
  Here are my observations . . .
Ky Howard- 6'3"` 175 lbs- Guard- is a workhorse. He's a stat-sheet filler. It's hard to say he has a weakness to his game because he does so many different things with the ball. I like his energy, and his spunk about what he does with the ball. He always makes the right decision and puts others in position to contribute to the game. He averaged 25 in Vegas and went to LA and did well out there also. His summer has been very productive, so much so that he's getting interest from schools such as Drexel, La Salle, Temple, Gonzaga, American, Lafeyette, St. Francis (PA). He led his league this past school year in scoring @ 17.6 points and this summer is the MVP of Sonny Hill Future League (9th & 10th Grade), averaging 23 points to lead his team to a second-place record.
Xavier Harris- 6'5" 210 lbs- Forward- this is another workhorse. He does a lot for his team but mainly does better on the block because he's so much quicker and stronger. He's one of the those players you can always count on. He has always brought energy to the floor and is a great rebounder and quick off the floor. I'm not sure which schools are making offers, but he is one of the those players that has so much potential. I like this game and he's a great finisher and can change the momentum whenever. I believe he will be a player to watch out for this year. Great listener and always looks for advice. Won the Sonny Hill League High School League (11th & 12th Grade) on the Diamond Medics team this summer under John Hardnett. He was also named as one of the top 20 players in the Reebok Underclassmen Camp in Dallas, Texas.
Markeith Mont- 6'4" 1/2 195 lbs- Wing Forward- This is the inside/outside type player. Whatever you need he is willing to provide. He gives 100% effort all the time. This past school season he averaged 19 pts. and 10 rebounds. He gives you what you are looking for and does it in a great manner. He doesn't try to overdo it, but he's always willing to make sure other people are involved. I think he will grow to be that player people know he can be. Still young and still learning, but has the respect of many people as a "GO HARD" type of player. I think this will definitely be a great season for him. Defensive Forward award in the Sonny Hill League for the Future League (9th and 10th Grade).
Aquil Younger- 5'11" 160- Point Guard- There aren't too many players in the Philadelphia area with his type of conditioning and worth ethic. He's always on the run and does whatever is needed to get the job done. He can go up and down the court all the day and is a tremendous defender. He was named to the top 20 game in Dallas for the Reebok Underclassmen Camp. He gives 100% every play and has the ability to be great with the ball and be a true point guard. You can tell that he is developing his skills to be a true college point guard and gives everything he got to help his team win. He's very productive and this past school season averaged 12 points a game in the Catholic League South.
Extra Spice Player- This goes to a player no one has heard of, but deserves recognition for his improvement. I have been currently going over to New Jersey and watching certain players player and I have to say a player stood out to me, that is very talented and has the potential to be very good one day . . .
Ronald Curry- 6'1" 1/2 170- Rising Soph. Point Guard- He attends Paul VI and plays with many different players over in New Jersey. He has the potential to be something and he works very hard to make things happen on the court for his team. He make things happen on either end of the floor. Very smart for his age and keeps growing as a player. Has very nice touch to his shot and dishes the ball with confidence in his decision making. Has ton of energy and works hard consistently with this game. This is a New Jersey guy to keep an eye out on. This past season he averaged 9 points and 8 assists. I believe this will be a breakout season for him also.
