SHOWCASE EVENT
Paul VI 69, Washington 65 (OT)
What better way for me to exit the Old Year than to see a dog fight
of a basketball game that goes down to the wire. There's always something
magical about what goes on in the basketball world of sports, but it gets
interesting when Philly & South Jersey meet up. Washington has been a team that
has brought it each and every single game this season except one, and that was
the last game when they lost by 30 points to Camden Catholic (N.J.). I asked a
couple players from the team about the game before this one and all they could
do was shake their head and tell me, "THIS GAME WON'T BE THE SAME, NO MATTER WHO
SHOWS UP!" This would definitely be the case for this game. Paul VI is one of
the elite South Jersey basketball programs led by Siena signee
Rob Poole (8 pts.) & Jr. stud
Ron Curry (27 pts.). Poole
would start off pretty good, making some great decisions with the ball and
taking some reasonable shots to keep his team in the lead for the beginning of
the game. Paul VI seemed to have Washington's number with the ability to
penetrate and kick to others for open shots during the beginning parts, but
Washington countered with Keith Richardson (25 pts.),
who should be getting some looks from somewhere, if he isn't already. He
seemed to be always composed this game and he made all the right decisions,
consistently through the game. Richardson and Kawaun Chavis
(13 pts.) kept the game close in the first quarter (down 3). In the
second quarter Curry & Kris O'Conner (12 pts.) helped
their team extend the lead by 6 at half for Paul VI. In the third, Richardson
and Curry put on a show for the crowd and made some remarkable plays to help
manage their team's offense and show aggression to the basket; at one point
seeming like they wouldn't miss a outside shot. Another guy that was interesting
for Paul VI during the second half was Matt Reisse (8 pts.), a 6'5"
freshmen, who played his heart out, was not afraid to go up for any rebound and
do the necessary things for his team to keep the lead. That all died down for
Paul VI in the fourth quarter, when Keith Richardson scored big buckets (with
some threes) and helped his team play some remarkable defense to pull the game
within 2 points. With the game showing that two-point differential, Paul VI saw
an opportunity to throw a deep ball past half court off an inbound play. But the
ball landed in the hands of Washington's Darnell Green (11
pts.), who would make the timeout call and provide the chance for a
heroic play. Kendall Truitt (10 pts.) went
down the lane for a layup, but got fouled and walked to the line for 2
free throws with 2.8 seconds on the clock. Truitt made both free throws by the
skin of his teeth and the friendly nature of the rim to tie the game up. Paul VI
put the ball in hands of Curry, who came close on a heave from beyond halfcourt.
Curry was smiling as the game went into OT, and you could tell he felt something
special was still going to happen. Curry jumped on Washington with an opening
3-point basket, and he also hit 2 early free throws. Even with Washington trying
to stay in the game, Paul VI scored 13 points in the OT to win by 4 in a very
close, tight game. GOTTA LOVE THE CLOSE ACTION IN A GREAT GAME. I know that both
of these schools also have good football teams. Maybe next year, they could meet
in that sport, too, and we could see another close one. CHECKING OUT FOR THE OLD
YEAR.

SEASON PREVIEW
Other Considerations:
Jerimyjah Batts, Terrell Parker, Gameel "Pepsi" Strange &
Richard "Eggy" Hoskins (Comm Tech), Christian McNeeley (Del.
Valley), Malik Wesley, Carlton Wright & Gevon Presley (Freire),
Nafee Hardy (Hope), Earl Brown, Brandon Austin, Terrell Johnson,
Khyree Wooten & Tyheim Perrin (Imhotep), Darrell Ockimey (Bracetti),
Khalik Long & William Wingate (Mastery N.), Laquan Stephens &
Byron Whiting (Prep Charter), James Cole & Sultan Smith
(Mansion), Nate Boyer, Greg Sharp & Rich Williams (FitzSimons).
Division D: This is the division that people
will question, but I expect the kids to play hard and manage to
find some upsets within their schedule. There are always good
games everywhere, the key to make sure that they continue. With
a few upsets that I feel will happen, and the correct
adjustments, this could definitely be a good league. Audenried
is back & there are some pretty good additions. No telling who
will come out of this division victorious, but a wild guess
could be Bodine. With a good coach and some balance, they will
definitely find a way to win some games. Masterman is another
team to watch out for in this division.
Nadir Matthews (Bodine)...He will definitely be a
huge mark for his team. I know he will contribute big and force
teams to play hard defense against him. I think once he picks up
and goes, everything will come second nature.
Mike Sturdivant (Masterman)...His court game is as
brilliant as his books. He makes the game come easy with his
ability to play hard and smart. He has great skill and he takes
on all competitors.
Matt Powers (CAPA)...Solid foundation for the
season. Make no mistake, he will lead his team and force the
whole entire league to pay attention to him. Don't think because
he plays for CAPA, that he's overrated.
Marc Price (Carroll)...Good skills and will
definitely make his team a lot better, especially not being at
Mastbaum anymore. His football ability should definitely help
during the season for his team.
Josh Collins (Saul)...Will be much better than
last year. He scored over 200 points and is 6'3"...I think he
can hold his own for his team this year. I would definitely keep
my eye on him.
Division E: New, but has a history look to it.
It has some teams that we are familiar with and will make some
noise for their team. I know they will be great appreciated with
their major players. MCS seems to be the favorite for this
league but it's no telling when you have other competitors who
feed off rivalries. Constitution is definitely a good looking
favorite team for this year for this division. They play a tough
non-league schedule and should help them get ready for the
regular year. Word Comm comes back stronger this year and has
some great experience that should take them into the playoffs.
Xavier Harris (Constitution)...Full of explosiveness and
intelligence. When composed, he will have a great year. He makes
alot of strong moves and plays bigger than what he is. He is
will complimented this season and should get some better open
looks in games. I would definitely bet one on one with him on
the block.
Markeith Mont (World Comm)...Probably the most underrated player
around, his size and ability to finish around the basket makes
him dangerous. He has different speeds and manages to hold his
own weight. He has been undermined by a lot of people and all he
sems to do is prove people wrong. Wouldn't shock me, if he lead
the entire pub in scoring.
Jeremiah Worthem (MCS)...This kid is one in a
million. I heard he's been getting some really good interest
lately and plays big against the big time teams. He has the
ability to extend defense to the arch and has the athletic
ability to go around them. He definitely will be a proven kid
this year and will make his mark.
Erik Raleigh/Daiquan Walker (Constitution)...make
no mistake about it, these two will be big in many games this
year. Great to see that Raleigh got another for school and
Walker coming from Roman will be a huge offensive lift. It's not
telling how much damage they will do, but it should be a great
help for this team this year.
Marquise Richards (Robeson)...Don't pay attention
him and watch yourself get smoked. He has tremendous speed and
works hard at getting a bucket. He will play big in big games
and can shoot lights out. His intensity is really impressive and
definitely takes everything to heart. He is a "I can do all
things" type of kid.
Other Considerations:
Abdul King & Marvin Champ (Constitution), Walter
Holmes (Douglas), Harris Griffin (Eleverson), Tyreek Riddick,
Chris Stokes, Warren Dogan, Jeff Powell & Thomas Moore (MCS),
Michael Stewart (Parkway W), Andre Washington (Robeson), Elijah
Johnson (Lamerton), Shon Phillips & Ichywond Savage (World Comm)
The Catholic League
The league has a different flavor to it. There are no
additions this year, but there have been some subtractions. This
league is definitely different than last year, with it being all
one league. The great part about this league is, you have no
clue who might win and who will lose. Carroll seems to be a
strong consideration. They work well together and seem to be
exceptional but that doesn't take away from Roman Catholic, who
bring back a large piece of their good play. Neumann is no joke
either, even though they are missing 80% of their starting
lineup from last year; that's not an excuse in their book. They
still are looking to repeat. Wood & St. Joe's Prep will
definitely have a great opportunity to make some noise. They
will not take anything for granted and will uphold the name of
the school.
Juan'ya Green (Carroll/Niagara)...Moves on top of
moves. Hard to stop him from getting to the rim, the does
everything without thinking. This kid at one time was definitely
one of the largest marketed kids out. Everybody would definitely
say he could play with the best of them and he will continue to
prove he can this season.
Lamin Fulton (Neumann-Goretti/St. Peter's)....Try and stay in front
of him and you might lose your mind trying to do so. He is
probably the most aggressive player in this league and will take
his experience from last year and take it straight to the bank
for more than just a hope for winning this year. I see him
making a strong point as a leader.
Joe Getz (Wood)...He started the season out
dropping 40. NEED I REALLY SAY ANYMORE. He will definitely be a
big part of this league. I wouldn't hold my breathe or worry
about him making big plays. He will do so, Wood might be the
team everybody doesn't expect big things from.
Montana Mayfield (Roman)...should be able to lead
his team in many different ways. He has all the tools to help
his team exceed expectations. He makes the right play and has
the ability to dribble threw defenders and he works hard at all
the right things. He will definitely need some help but has a
whole bunch of help with the team he has.
Eddie Mitchell (Lasalle/Rider)...I would not sleep
on him or his team. They don't look like they are ready to take
over the league but might have the pieces to do so. Mitchell is
one of those guys you would hate to be in front of. His team is
much different with a different concept, but his help will make
sure he doesn't leave La Salle with any excuses.
Other Considerations:
Scott & Craig Slade (Bonner), Joe Kehoe & Reggie
Charles (Judge), Shane Randall, Yosef Yacob, & Tracy Peal
(Carroll), La'Quan Coaxum, Billy Shank, Derrick Stewart & Hanif
Sutton (Neumann-Gorretti), Shafeek Taylor, Britton Lee &
Fortunat "Junior" Kangudi (Roman), Jamal Nwaniemka
(Conwell-Egan), Kenyatta Long & Gerald Scott (McDevitt), Eric
Fleming (Ryan), Gene Williams, Steve Vastauria, & Miles Overton
(St. Joes Prep), Jack Walsh (Wood)
Inter-Ac
There is no telling who will win this league. I just
say "put the names in a hat and pick one", they seem to be all
equal strength. They definitely will go into this year with some
strong confidence. I expect it to be a really good competitive
nature this year.
Jimmy Hammer (Germantown Academy)...Might be the best overall
player in this league. No exceptions to what might be done in
this league. Definitely skilled and unpredictable. He raises the
bar every time he plays.
Brendan Kilpatrick (Malvern)...His team isn't the same as last
year but he will definitely make the team feel comfortable with
his play. He has a keen eye for the game. Sharp as a knife with
his ability to score the ball.
D.C. Gaitley (Episcopal)...Fortunate that he had a brother that
could play. I bet he learned some things from him. He seems to
be a good contributor in many different ways. Not the cream of
the crop but will make his mark.
Andrew Acker (Haverford)....the solid foundation in the middle for
this team. He might be a highly underrated kid. He is pretty
good around the basket. He has good moments where he shows
people how to use the 6'7" frame.
Malik Garner (Chestnut Hill)...Definitely will make his mark this
year. Moves inside and outside the paint and can be a big time
player in some many ways for this league. I can't see a game
where he will struggle, he gets looked towards for so much
leadership.
IF THERE ARE ANY MORE ADJUSTMENTS...THAT MEANS KIDS TRANSFER TOO
MUCH...LOL.
HAVE A GREAT SEASON AND BEST OF LUCK TO ALL!

PHILLY.COM/RALLY CLASSIC
La Salle 45, Dobbins 28
This is just one of those games you expected to
be much of a huge thrill. Both schools have decided to take their school’s
basketball program to the next level. They have been invited to some great
events this year and will be hot features for both of their respected leagues
and what better way to be respected than to play each other. Well, the intent
was to play but with a very -- and I mean very -- slow start, Dobbins
would lead after the first quarter by 3-2. If that number looks a little funny,
you don’t have to check your eyes, the game was slow in the beginning. Only one
field goal by Lamar Harrison (2 pts.) was scored in the first quarter.
The second quarter would be a little bit better but still slow and by halftime
and only 7 field goals together, the score would be 11-7 with La Salle leading.
In the second half Jerrell Wright (14 pts. 10 boards 2 blocks) would
start his team off with a huge dunk passed in by Basir Fulmore (2 pts. & 4
stls.). Fulmore had been huge in the first half defensively helping get some
charges to help keep his team close in the game, but it wouldn’t be enough once
Steve Collins (16 pts.) would start to get on a roll. His ability to
extend the floor and hit shots kept Dobbins from even getting close to a lead.
The huge help for Collins would be Eddie Mitchell (10 pts.), who would
help carry his team towards a win by scoring 6 pts. in the fourth quarter alone
& with his passes to open players like Amar Stukes (7 pts.), Kevin Piotrowicz
& Steve Smith (5 pts.) would help stretch La Salle to a 45–28 win over
Dobbins.

WASHINGTON TIPOFF TOURNAMENT
Great to see basketball open back up with a bang. There is lots of
basketball going around this time and I think it’s about that I got out and saw
some games. My first stop of the year is Washington High school where 4 teams
would start their season hoping to get a early start towards a great season.
West Philly 51, Hope 45
In this game, it featured two teams that are definitely in the
process of trying to build something with some young players. Both teams lost
some key guys due to graduation and it showed early with both teams looking for
some form of leadership and strong play. Hope Charter would look towards
Nafee Hardy (19 pts. 7 rbs.). Hardy would get things on the right foot by
hitting two 3’s and a layup to start the team off with an 8-2 lead. After a time
out West Philly would look towards their leader in Lemier Mitchell (15 pts.),
who would make strong plays to the basketball and hit a huge three to start
their own run (7-0) of their own. In the second quarter, Larry
Richardson (13 pts.) would add to the lead by scoring 6 of his own to help
the team towards a 27-13 lead at half. Hope’s turnovers & miscues would continue
with missed free throws and rebounds. Those would be capitalized in the second
half with Terrell "Sleepy" Daye (18 pts.), scoring 9 points in the 3rd
quarter and leading all fast breaks and rebounding opportunities on the
offensive glass. After a 1 point second quarter, Hope would get back on the
right page by playing some tough nose defense after being doing 17 in the third
quarter. They would go on a deep run by going 15 point straight and 5:30 minutes
including the end of the third with scoring well & moving the ball. They would
get some keep help from Bruce Clements (6 pts.), Jalil Shafi (6 pts.) &
Dante Taylor-Mills (6 pts.) with some key threes and fast break layups,
but West was just too much towards the end with key free throws and fast breaks
of their own to take the win 51-45.
Washington 91, Robeson 68
There is always something in the public league that looks different
then it did the year before, well including the 68 teams this year, WASHINGTON
LOOKS A LITTLE LIKE THEIR FOOTBALL TEAM…FAST! & when I say fast, I mean super
fast. They just came out the gate and never looked back. A part of this
difference is the transfer of Kawaun Chavis (6 pts. & 6 asst.) &
Courtland “Redz” Gilliam (11 pts. & 7 asst.). These two stand at 5’10” & are
both extremely skilled with handling the ball and seemed to help key returning
starter Keith Richardson (18 pts.). Robeson would start out pretty
good with Marquise Richards (13 pts.) helping with a quick 7 points, but
GW would be powerful with there ability to run the fast break appropriately with
Gilliam’s quick assists & Soph. Nafeece Edwards (21 pts.) ability to help
complete plays at the rim. Darnell Green (16 pts.) would be big part of
the team also with his ability to penetrate and get the ball out on the fast
breaks. The lead would only be three after the first quarter. Even with the
pickup play by Chester (22 pts.) for Robeson, it just wouldn’t be enough.
The lead would continue to grow with the guard speed of Washington. It got to
the point, where they were up 30 in the third quarter and Richardson told his
team, “They’re too slow. Let’s just keep running." And keeping running, they
would. Richardson would “WOW” the crowd with this ability to split 4 guys and
get a layup. The lead would slow down once subs were made and Robeson went on an
8-0 run in the fourth but that would be stop with Washington’s ability to slow
the ball down and pass the ball around the floor. They would finish the game
with a 91-68 win.
