FEB. 9
THE SECOND VOLUME OF “ARE YOU CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND?”
Class AAAA:
#1 Gratz
The Bulldogs are fully loaded and have made the biggest difference with the leadership of Andrew Moye (15.1 ppg) & Aquil Younger (11.1 ppg). These two have not taken any plays of games off and have done nothing but help lead their team to a regular season title and looks to win it all. Nigel Caldwell (8.3 ppg) seems to be the X-FACTOR.
vs.
#8 Overbrook
Panthers are led by Brandon Fulton (14.4 ppg)...He's done a great job scoring and putting his team in position for some great wins this season. He seems as though he is going to make the necessary adjustments to get wins. Donte Glover (9.67 ppg) will be a big piece for his team and make some good plays to keep his team ready for whatever.
---
#2 Washington
The Eagles are locked and loaded and ready to make a move towards a championship with Keith Richardson (19.8 ppg) who lead the division in scoring and helped make every necessary play to help his team get to this point of the playoffs. Kawuan Chavis (13.6 ppg) has been a tremendous addition and Kendall Truitt (12.6 ppg) seems to be a huge X-Factor.
vs.
#7 Central
Justin Potter (11.6 ppg) has been outstanding for his team this year. He looks to lead a pack of hungry Lancers into the playoffs and look for some outstanding performances for the playoffs. Helping him with this duty will be Sam Montgomery (8.6 ppg), who will look to be a huge factor his team in the playoffs.
---
#3 Frankford
Keith Washington (19.4 ppg) is the second leading scorer in the division and has been huge this season. Especially when he knocked off high profile Constitution earlier in the season. He has been getting some good help from Imire Taylor (13.2 ppg) & Kevin Lawson (8.9 ppg) who stay in the mix of the action every game.
vs.
# Fels
Nijay Kelly (12.7 ppg) will definitely be a huge difference in what will take place with this team in the playoffs. If he gets on the right start, he will definitely make a difference. This team was able to get some key wins this season, especially with the help of TJ Scott (7.5 ppg), who is young but definitely getting some pretty good experience this season.
---
#4 Bartram
Darrell Robinson (18.5), has been big all season. He's caught the eyes of many people around the city and he's made plays for a team that returns to the playoffs after graduating a Virginia Tech signee. Definitely have some major pieces such as Barry Brockington (13.2 ppg), who has been as consistent as possible to help lead his team in many ways.
vs.
#5
Lincoln
Rickey Savage (11.7 ppg) & Michael Bowlers (10.5 ppg) seem to be the head leads for this team to make a run in the playoffs. This is a very scrappy team that seems to be led strongly by their rebounding, including a 20 rebound game against Southern by Ronald Rollins (7.7 ppg).
---
Class AAA:
#1 P.E.T.
This team is a match problem waiting to happen for any team who faces them. They are led by Carrington Ward (18.6 ppg) & Devante Chance (16.7), who could be the most dangerous during this time of the season. They are intense and get help in Hakeem Baxter (6 ppg), Emmanuel Brown (7.5 ppg), & their twin towers in Jai Williams (7.3 ppg) & David George (9.7 ppg).
vs.
#8 Germantown
Pretty good season, I know they are happy to find themselves back into the post season, no matter how they did it. One of the ways they did it  is by great play from Wonye McFarland (12.5 ppg) & Tahron Fitzhugh (12.4 ppg). I don't think they will be afraid to lead their team into some great playoff play. They seem to have the heart and fight to do so.
---
#2 Boy's Latin
Definitely a great year for a team that jumped from single A to triple A and they found ways of being at the very top. Maurice Watson (22.3 ppg) managed to stay at the brink of his scoring ability, adding to an already high total of points for his career (1,600 in 3 season). Carlos Taylor (14 ppg) & Yahmir Greenlee (12.7 ppg) will be the dangerous help for Watson.
vs.
#7 Roxborough
The Indians took a devastating blow with the sudden death of Rashawn Anderson (14.0 ppg), there is no replacing his energy but just like their play in the play-in game, they will look to make a few more upsets on behalf. Dwayne Holland (8 ppg) & Lijah Lewis (7.2 ppg) should be definitely ready and willing to do whatever to help their team win some big ones. Expect this team to play hard on nothing but emotion but keep there pride and work ethic as did Anderson.
---
#3 E&S
Definitely an underrated team. They have all the mechanics to win big this post season. With great coaching, players like Dijon Eggleton (11.6) & Brandon Brown (10 ppg) should be willing to do what it takes to win. Tahjere McCall (8.6) should be a huge help for the playoff lift they need to continue through.
vs.
#6 University City
This is one of those teams that could have placed anywhere higher than what they are but caught some bad breaks in some tight games. They seem to have the right chemistry lead by Rafeeq Bush (16.5 ppg) and got great help from players such as Martez Lyles (13.1 ppg), Parrish Grantham (7.5) & Gary Gordon (7.4 ppg).
---
#4 Dobbins
Led by a high candidate for POY is Jerrell Wright (20.3 ppg) who continues to find ways of helping his team pick up some big wins with his rebounding and shot blocking. He comes with explosiveness and energy and will have Basir Fulmore (10 ppg) & Daquan Brown (7.2 ppg) helping him reach towards another championship.
vs.
# West Philly
The Speedboys are always an interesting tradition of basketball. They work hard and have a sense of pride when they play. Terrell Daye (20.4 ppg), has all the tools to help lead his team into the playoffs and will motivate others such as Lemeir Mitchell (11.3 ppg) & Larry Richardson (8.8 ppg) to help them get past some challenges for the ultimate goal.
---
Class AA:
#1 Imhotep
One of the top teams in the country is back for vengeance, last year they forgot to get their state championship crown because of Strawberry Mansion. I guess they will be making another run for that this year with Ameen Tanksley (13.5 ppg), David Appolon (10.6 ppg), Tyhiem Perrin (10 ppg), Erik Copes (8.4 ppg), & Khyree Wooten (7.9 ppg).
vs.
#8 Mastery North
You can't hate on this team. They have all the fight in them to make a worthy run for this championship. They are sound and manage to do what necessary to get the job done. William Wingate (11.1 ppg) & Khalik Long (9 ppg). They have had a up and down league play but I expect them to be on point about the playoffs.
---
#2 Comm Tech
This team isn't new to winning. They found a way all year to stay up on top of teams without a struggle. Rich Hoskins (14.8 ppg) will be the man of them all for this team. He seems to make a mark every game and put guys like Chris Burney (7.3 ppg), Jerimyjah Batts (6.9), Tony Parker (9.2 ppg), & Gameel Strange (9.1 ppg) in position to make big plays.
vs.
#7 FitzSimons
One of the latest teams to join the public league, but has tremendous talent, THANK GOD for their coaching and leadership in Richard Williams (16.3 ppg), Jack Burris (11.8 ppg) and Mike Majett (8.8 ppg), who have taken this old middle school and received man-like compliments for their play.
---
#3 Vaux
They probably have the best sophomore in the area in Rysheed Jordan (15.5 ppg), he has returned to this program with a sense of eagerness, including leading his team against big wins like Abington Friends & almost taking down Gratz. They have all the tools and with Shawn Williams (13.6 ppg), Jaleel Williams (13.3 ppg), & James Butler (9.7)...WATCH OUT.
vs.
#6 Freire
Malik Wesley (17.4 ppg) always makes this team interesting every game. He works hard and provides the lift for this team to get some good wins in the post season.Carlton Wright (10.7 ppg) is also huge piece in their success this season and I expect that to continue in the playoffs.
---
#4 Prep Charter
It's always different when you are missing a great kid such a Akhir Frazier, but Mark Wilmer (11.8 ppg) & LaQuan Stephens (10.3 ppg) have seem to keep his spirit of play in their run to a championship this year. I don't think they will sleep on anything and to make sure they have depth with Byron Whiting & Abraham Massasley who both average 7.5 ppg.
vs.
#5 Del Valley
I watched this team fight all season. Their chemistry on the floor is definitely one of a kind and with the right pieces, I have faith this team will not let themselves down. They take every game as serious as if it was the playoff with the play of Carnell Gray (14.4 ppg), Rashaan Feaster (9.1 ppg) &  Fateem Brockington (5.3 ppg).
---
Class A:
#1 MC&S
They work hard on every position and have so much talent on the floor with Thomas Moore (17.1 ppg) & Jeremiah Worthem (13.8 ppg) leading a solid base team into the playoffs looking to win as much as they possibly can. Warren Dogan 14.4 & Tyreek Riddick (11.8 ppg) who is the biggest X-Factor in the playoffs to me will be huge lifts for the playoffs.
vs.
#8. Sankofa
In there first year, they found a way to do something that 34 other teams couldn't do, reach the playoffs & they are definitely looking towards taking every opportunity given for them. This isn't the most talented team, put them against anybody and it's a match to watch with Anthony Wright-Downing (10.5 ppg) and Luis Martinez (9.1). They definitely have a great chance to get a upset if they play together and work through their system.
---
#2 Constitution
Another candidate player of the year has lead his team in Daiquan Walker (21.4 ppg), who has been nothing but tremendous and receiving big time D1 looks lately. He continues to work hard and make the necessary plays for his. He's definitely a fourth quarter player which leads his team to a fourth quarter power, but has tremendous help from Xavier Harris (16.8 ppg), Abdul King (11.9 ppg), & Mamadou Diakite (10.1 ppg). They will look towards winning it all this year and nothing less.
vs.
#7 Palmer
Palmer has been really strong this season based on the play of Syhmere Armstrong (19.5 ppg) who has done nothing but match the intensity of every team and make a huge impact in the playoffs. He continues to make a difference for his team into the playoffs and will be looking to get noticed with winning in the playoffs. Demetrius Crawford (13 ppg) and Amir Davis (9.3 ppg) are also huge keys to the success of the year and will look to continue that result of hard work.
---
#3 Robeson
Caught a big win over World Comm in the last game of their regular season to earn this spot. They've been hit with a few injuries this season but their coach seems to keep them together and worked out all the problem of the past. They look different then last year but still have Andre Washington (17.8 ppg) and Marquise Richards (17.3) leading the pack and ready to make a run in the playoffs. Leonard Chester (13.7 ppg) and Nate Hargust (10 ppg) are the guys that people should definitely keep their eyes on during their run.
vs.
#6 Parkway West
This team has marched their way into the playoffs and has no plans on being ran over during their run. They are willing to work as hard as the next team and fights for every possession needed to win some games. I expect Mike Stewart (18.8 ppg) & Larry Webster (14.1 ppg) to be the key to their competitive nature and working hard to make sure they don't go home with a loss.
---
#4 World Communication
Definitely have a the talent to stay in the mix of the playoffs. They have had some tough breaks this year but has managed to work hard on staying consistent and having a decent record this year. Now it's time to move towards a championship and Markeith Mont (18.7 ppg) will be the major lift for them to do so. He is joined by Shon Phillips (9.4 ppg) & Anthony Guess (8.5 ppg) who should be key points to their success in the playoffs.
vs.
#5 Lamberton
They are led by the return of former World Comm player Elijah Johnson (16.5 ppg). He has returned to his natural roots and plans on proving why he wants a championship more than anybody. He has a great group of kids who are definitely committing themselves to making sure they don't let this dream fall apart. He has made great plays and with the help of Troy Yancey (13.5 ppg), I definitely would keep a 5 hour energy waiting because these are the guys to not sleep on.

JAN. 20
PUBLIC B
Dobbins 55, Mastbaum 49
It's always good to get back to my second home (Mastbaum)...well, my brother Michael Leak (Football,06) graduated from there and so did a lot of my other family members such as (Chris "Tank" Macey Basketball, 03...R.I.P.), but there's always some type of battle when you join 2 of the great traditions of vo-tech schools together. I remember when Mastbaum was the football rival for Dobbins for Thanksgiving, until they got tired of us beating them...LoL, but it's all fun, games and joy when I'm back around this school. This was definitely a tighter game most people would have thought, but don't tell me, tell Murrell Dobbins. I walked in the gym and something seemed different for this type of game. There was actually a crowd & people were sitting next to me, telling me how big Dobbins' big man was & how another kid on the team look like a full grown James Harden (OKC Thunder), referring to his beard. One thing...I don't think that meant anything to Eric Jarvis (20 Pts.). Dobbins would start off pretty smoothly, but as I looked up at the score after the first timeout the score was 9-9 & Jarvis didn't even start. Jerrell Wright (27 Pts. 17 rbs.) was into a rhythm with 6 of the nine Dobbins points. Basir Fulmore (8 Pts., 6 Asst.) who is usually a great extra help, would get 2 quick fouls in the first quarter and would sit until the 2nd quarter. After about 4 1/2 minutes in the game Jarvis would enter the game for George Carter, who was injured going up for a basket. Since he was unable to shoot his free throws, Jarvis would come in and hit 1 out of the 2 free throws. It was definitely his time from there, he would come down at hit a long 2 point shot and the basket would get bigger by the minute for him. After the first quarter and Dobbins only found themselves up 1 point, Stanley Whittaker (15 Pts.) would help add to the mix, which would help keep their team only 1 point down at half. After a scoreless first half, Fulmore would come out in the third aggressive but Jarvis would counter the attack with a couple 3's of his own. It would be one of those moments, where he felt like he had 30 but it was just big time shots. In the fourth quarter, after a scoreless 3rd by Wright, Jerrell would begin to announce his presence in the game with a dunk and some large rebounds and put backs, but Jarvis & Whittaker countered with their own shots. Sean McCall (8 Pts.) would be a huge help to help the Panthers grab the lead but not enough as Mastbaum turned the ball over in some key late possessions and Fulmore & Darnell Butts (2 Pts.) would hit some clutch free throws to end the game, 55-49. Always great to see some good basketball with the Vo-Tech school. I guess we have more skills and trades than just our shop.

JAN. 18
PUBLIC C
Hope 47, Bracetti 40

There's nothing like having a Batman on your side. A guy who, when things seem to be getting out of control, puts things back in order. Seemed like Nafee Hardy (13 pts., 13 rbs., 5 stls., 3 blks., 3 asst.) was the one today. In the beginning of the game Hope Charter started slowly with Bracetti going on a 7-2 run in the first 5 minutes. They hustled and rebounded for every ball, mostly due to the leadership of Luis Cirillo (14 pts. 9 rbs.) & Darrell Ockimey (13 pts., 4 rbs.). Ockimey and Cirillo would manage to keep the lead after the first quarter on Hope, and keep Hardy silent. But Hardy was there to help his team rebound with 8 pts. in the second quarter. He would dazzle the crowd with some explosive moves and find players cutting to the basket and rebound the ball as if it was second nature. He would also find ways of blocking the ball 3 times and getting 3 steals in the first half. But the whistle of the ref silenced the crowd he would have to be taken from the game with 3 early fouls. Bracetti would make their move and shoot 9 free throws in the second quarter alone to keep the lead by Hope with 10. In the second half, they would go back and forth with each other until Coach Mike Lintulahti from Hope Charter would finally put Hardy back in the game. He would spark the team and extend the lead by 13 in the third quarter but that wouldn't be enough for Bracetti to walk away. Cirillo would grab 4 of his 9 rebounds and put back some of the missed layups and with Hardy getting his fourth foul, Bracetti went on a 8-0 run in the final 2 minutes. In the fourth, Bracetti would come within 3 points of the game but that was enough for Hope to call time and put Hardy back in the game with 4 fouls. He would ask me at the table, "What does it take for me to win? I think I got a double-double already & I'm getting steals and blocks." Along with Jhalil Shafi (8 pts. 7 rbs.), who also had 4 fouls, Hardy returned to the game and those two would carry their team to a victory, even though Bracetti shot way more free throws.
On a side note: I like the kid from Bracetti, Chris Morgan, He had 9 rbs. and they were all big. He didn't score any points but he did his part to help his team.

DEC. 31
SHOWCASE EVENT
Paul VI 69, Washington 65 (OT)
What better way for me to exit the Old Year than to see a dog fight of a basketball game that goes down to the wire. There's always something magical about what goes on in the basketball world of sports, but it gets interesting when Philly & South Jersey meet up. Washington has been a team that has brought it each and every single game this season except one, and that was the last game when they lost by 30 points to Camden Catholic (N.J.). I asked a couple players from the team about the game before this one and all they could do was shake their head and tell me, "THIS GAME WON'T BE THE SAME, NO MATTER WHO SHOWS UP!" This would definitely be the case for this game. Paul VI is one of the elite South Jersey basketball programs led by Siena signee Rob Poole (8 pts.) & Jr. stud Ron Curry (27 pts.). Poole would start off pretty good, making some great decisions with the ball and taking some reasonable shots to keep his team in the lead for the beginning of the game. Paul VI seemed to have Washington's number with the ability to penetrate and kick to others for open shots during the beginning parts, but Washington countered with Keith Richardson (25 pts.), who  should be getting some looks from somewhere, if he isn't already. He seemed to be always composed this game and he made all the right decisions, consistently through the game. Richardson and Kawaun Chavis (13 pts.) kept the game close in the first quarter (down 3). In the second quarter Curry & Kris O'Conner (12 pts.) helped their team extend the lead by 6 at half for Paul VI. In the third, Richardson and Curry put on a show for the crowd and made some remarkable plays to help manage their team's offense and show aggression to the basket; at one point seeming like they wouldn't miss a outside shot. Another guy that was interesting for Paul VI during the second half was Matt Reisse (8 pts.), a 6'5" freshmen, who played his heart out, was not afraid to go up for any rebound and do the necessary things for his team to keep the lead. That all died down for Paul VI in the fourth quarter, when Keith Richardson scored big buckets (with some threes) and helped his team play some remarkable defense to pull the game within 2 points. With the game showing that two-point differential, Paul VI saw an opportunity to throw a deep ball past half court off an inbound play. But the ball landed in the hands of Washington's Darnell Green (11 pts.), who would make the timeout call and provide the chance for a heroic play. Kendall Truitt (10 pts.) went down the lane for a layup, but got fouled and walked to the line for 2 free throws with 2.8 seconds on the clock. Truitt made both free throws by the skin of his teeth and the friendly nature of the rim to tie the game up. Paul VI put the ball in hands of Curry, who came close on a heave from beyond halfcourt. Curry was smiling as the game went into OT, and you could tell he felt something special was still going to happen. Curry jumped on Washington with an opening 3-point basket, and he also hit 2 early free throws. Even with Washington trying to stay in the game, Paul VI scored 13 points in the OT to win by 4 in a very close, tight game. GOTTA LOVE THE CLOSE ACTION IN A GREAT GAME. I know that both of these schools also have good football teams. Maybe next year, they could meet in that sport, too, and we could see another close one. CHECKING OUT FOR THE OLD YEAR.

DEC. 19
PHILLY SHOWCASE EVENT

Wissahickon 70, Comm Tech 50
This was one of those games that the score didn't do the game any justice. Even though it says they won by a large margin, it was really entertaining and featured a competitive nature. Both teams were coming for some respect and Wissahickon would start off early by leading by 9 after the first quarter lead by Anthony McKie (20 pts.) who scored 10 pts in the first quarter alone. Comm Tech would make a run of their own (10-0) as Chris Burney (9 pts.) & Tony Parker (11 pts.) would help keep the game close with fast break layups and some great pressure defense. Jordan Reed (11 pts.) would be sensational for Wissahickon in the 3rd quarter with his 6 pts. on highlight oops and exceptional plays to the basket. That would soon slow down with a timely hard foul as Reed was going for a dunk. He hit the floor very hard, and wound up rolling around in his own blood, coming from his head. The play would be held up for about 15 minutes to clean it up and get Reed off the floor to the bench. You could hear people saying "THAT WAS SOME CRAZY STUFF TO SEE!" When played continued Mike Scheier (19 pts.) would continue his MVP performance for Wissahickon as he would score 7 in the fourth to help Wissahickon get a much needed win for their season.
Constitution 71, Gratz 61
This was definitely the intense game of the day. They would match each other well and both are considered big time heavy weights in their divisions and favorites to do some great things this season. Coach Rob Moore definitely guided his team in the right direction to get this win. It started with Abdul King (12 pts., 6stls.) coming up with some key defensive stops and 6 first quarter points, but Gratz would go on their own run to keep the game within 1 after the first quarter, led by Nigel Caldwell (19 pts.). He seemed to make all the necessary adjustments during the game to keep Gratz within close reach. Aquil Younger (14 pts. 6 ast. 6 stls.) would also be a huge part of the close parts of the game with his ability to penetrate the lane and get a bucket or make a key defensive steal. With Drexel in attendance, he would perform to his potential. Erik Raleigh (12 pts. 5 blocks) would be too much starting off in the second quarter with some quick points and key blocks. The second half was close until the 4th quarter, when Constitution finally took that strong lead behind Daiquan Walker (17 pts.), who would lead the breaks and make some key finishes and shots.
Mansion 65, Dobbins 56
You ever see a game where it just looks like a total mismatch? The underdogs are on one side and the top dogs are on another. Well, that was this game. Mansion is definitely making some key adjustments this year especially with the graduation and loss of many different players, including DJ Newbill, who is attending Southern Miss (when he definitely could have helped Marquette out). This game would start off with the aggressive play of James Cole (11 pts.). Mansion would definitely play solid defense and force Dobbins to make costly turnovers and tough shots. It seemed early that Dobbins was definitely outmatched, by the way the ball was being moved, but Jerrell Wright (18 pts. & 18 rbs.) & Basir Fulmore (17 pts.) had other ideas. They would definitely match Mansion's  intensity and hit some great shots to help keep the Mustangs in some form of rhythm. But Mansion definitely prevailed in the second half with a great play by Amir Butler (18 pts.) & Karon Keene (10 pts.) with some key shots towards the end of the game to make sure Dobbins didn't get any other ideas of getting closer in the score.

DEC. 15
SEASON PREVIEW

WHAT CAN I SAY? THERE ARE A LOT OF CHANGES THIS YEAR. A lot of people have made some serious changes in their programs and it's time to find out who's who and what's what this year. With the addition of five teams to bring us to 68 in the Pub, I'm not sure if this will be a great year but this will definitely be a new year with different interesting bullet points.

"The Pub"
Division A: This division is led by a bunch of pure basketball players that will have a great year. These guys have not only decided to make a way for themselves but introduce a new era of different basketball. I believe Gratz is the strong favorite but there's no telling what will happen when teams manage to make adjustments to what they already have. Washington is another strong team, that no one will expect to do well but they have some really good things to help them accomplish whatever goals they want to attain. Frankford & Bartram are also really good teams. They will be able to manage their own productivity and keep out of the way of blowouts this season. FIGHTERS, as I call them.
Aquil Younger (Gratz/Drexel)...If you recognize this name...then you can't stop wiping your eyes...This is the same guy that put up huge numbers for West Catholic, but those days are long behind him. He is officially a new player, in a new league, through a new system, looking for a new opportunity but his game will definitely be the same...still fast, still aggressive & still crafty with his skills.
Ray Jaggon (Olney)...Not sure what might happen this year with Ray, but he will be what he will be...a good player. He definitely makes the best decisions on the floor for his team. Not sure if he will leave this team but Olney will definitely be dangerous if they have him for the season. He contributes big with everything he does.
Keith Richardson (Washington)...Nothing less than amazing with the ball, he so much upper body strength and can drive to the basketball and get pass defenders at will. He reminds me of a certain NBA player (Melo) on how smooth he moves with the ball and seems to be so under control with things he does.
Barry Brockington (Bartram)...Definitely a difference maker for his team this year. He transferred from Bartram and seem to get stronger and better than he was the year before. He manages the floor well and has enough smarts to help his team make some games uncomfortable for opponents. He definitely is a match up problem and will not be afraid to fill the stat sheet anywhere on the floor.
Andrew Moye/Nigel Caldwell (Gratz)....Pick your poison. Either way, one of these guys are going to get what they want on the floor. Nigel's athleticism to showcase his hopes and slashing ability helps him so much on the floor & fast breaks are a problem. Moye is the animal of all animals, he shows no fear and goes after everything like he just heard something is trying to attack him...Manchild among Boys!
Other Considerations:
Rickey "Slick" Savage & Ronald Rollins (Lincoln), Keith Washington & Bryant Watson (Frankford), Jarmal Brown (Bartram), Samir Hill (Overbrook), Yusef Savage & Deion Barnes (Northeast), Malik "Magic" Starks (Olney), Charles Merritt & Bruce Hanner (Gratz), Kenneth Stansbury (Edison), Rodney Chandler & Antwain Rucker (Southern), Kawuan Chavis, Courtland Gilliam & Nafeece Edwards (Washington).

  Divison B
: This division is back into effect again. The only difference is it won't be the same championship because of Gratz moving up. Dobbins appears to be the favorite because of Jerrell Wright. They won't be the only team making noise. The other team looking for some love is Boys' Latin...YUP...I SAID IT...BOY'S LATIN..."the big jumpers" are now in 3A as opposed to 1A. Much different ballgame but I know, like anybody knows, they definitely can handle the weight. PET will continue to be a powerhouse and show great improvements this year in this division. They will definitely be contending for a Pub title this year with their great ability to go inside and outside. FLC is a very different team than last year, but who isn't. I expect some great things with the leadership they have.
Jerrell Wright (Dobbins/LaSalle)...You can definitely argue that he's the best player in the area. He provides leadership and talent that few players in this area have. His defense and offense will help keep him in mind with the best of them for player of the year. He definitely will be looking to help his team win the 3A championship for the pub, city & go for the Public League Championship.
Maurice "Doo-Wop" Watson (Boy's Latin)...1,000 points in 2 seasons...SCARY...Gotta be efficient, especially when others are scoring on his team also. His unique style of being an elite point guard is definitely efficient for him and his team. He will have a lot on his shoulders this season, and he will be expected to prove that the move up to 3A was worth it.
Turhan Griffin (FLC)...the general of this team. He not only will lead his team but work hard to find his place at the top of this division. With his worth ethic and great coaching from Poole, there shouldn't be too much he won't be able to do this year. He will definitely  make sure his team is not let down in the midst of having a more inexperienced team than others.
Devante Chance (PET)...Definitely the captain of this team. He will be able to make sure everything is in place and that "Flame" doesn't have to worry about anything during the game. He will find different holes in defenses and make opportunities for others to make plays and help his team work towards their goals this season. Even with youth, there is always some experience around.
Rashawn Anderson (Roxborough)...Might be the most important piece to any team this year in this division. If he doesn't play, they might not even come close to winning. His ability to coach his team and keep them from losing confidence is the most important part. Anderson definitely has all the attributes to helping his team do well.
Other Considerations:
Basir Fulmore (Dobbins), John Hardy (Swenson), Terrell "Sleepy" Daye & Lemeir Mitchell (West Phila.), Carrington Ward & Hakeem Baxter (P.E.T.), Eric Cottman (Mastery S.), Jahid Ward (Bok), George Carter (Mastbaum), Aahmid Mink (FLC), Martez Lyles (U. City), Dijon Eggleton & Kenneth Murphy (E & S), Carlos Taylor & Yamir Greenlee (Boy's Latin)

Division C: This is the division people gnash their teeth about. There is definitely a lot of talent and definitely a lot of competitive play here. There has always been a huge look-over of many teams in the division, and one of the main reasons is the nature of Imhotep. Imhotep last year captured the Pub title but lost in the semi-final of the states. Not only did they look really good, but their team would be returning the next year with vengeance because of what they left behind. Imhotep seems to be the favorite for the entire city, but that doesn't take away from others who will be ready to throw down for what is at the top. Vaux, Freire & Prep Charter will all be in the thick of things.
Erik Copes (Imhotep/George Washington)...Let's just get the big ones out the way. This kid is unbelievable on defense. He makes everybody better on the defensive side of the ball. He makes all the right choices and plays with no fear in his heart. He protects the basket and makes very few mistakes for his team. I think he will be a huge part of why they might win it all.
Ameen Tanskley (Imhotep/Niagara)...Little do you know, Meen is going to be the aggressive one this year. He always looks to make sure he will lead his team. His has the heart of lion and takes on everything in front of him. He manages his game well and makes the right decisions.
David Appolon (Imhotep/Robert Morris)...The third party of them all, definitely will make his way in the books for good play this year. He manages his team as a true point guard leader and never puts himself before his team. He's probably the smartest player I know out of this division and will continue to work hard to make sure his team will be great this year.
Rysheed Jordan (Vaux)...Make way for the next big thing in the Public League. This kid has all the tools to be very successful. Manchild for just his age. He continue to keep being a general on the floor for his team and works hard at keeping his team in the right mindset for any game that he plays in. He will definitely be one of the best in the league this year.
Mark Wilmer (Prep Charter)....Might have to do everything for his team inside, but that won't be any excuse for him. He will play to the end of the whistle and make no mistake about him, he's super strong and does well with his positioning. This kid takes on all challenges and expects great things every game. Great spirit.

Other Considerations:
Jerimyjah Batts, Terrell Parker, Gameel "Pepsi" Strange & Richard "Eggy" Hoskins (Comm Tech), Christian McNeeley (Del. Valley), Malik Wesley, Carlton Wright & Gevon Presley (Freire), Nafee Hardy (Hope), Earl Brown, Brandon Austin, Terrell Johnson, Khyree Wooten & Tyheim Perrin (Imhotep), Darrell Ockimey (Bracetti), Khalik Long & William Wingate (Mastery N.), Laquan Stephens & Byron Whiting (Prep Charter), James Cole & Sultan Smith (Mansion), Nate Boyer, Greg Sharp & Rich Williams (FitzSimons).

Division D: This is the division that people will question, but I expect the kids to play hard and manage to find some upsets within their schedule. There are always good games everywhere, the key to make sure that they continue. With a few upsets that I feel will happen, and the correct adjustments, this could definitely be a good league. Audenried is back & there are some pretty good additions. No telling who will come out of this division victorious, but a wild guess could be Bodine. With a good coach and some balance, they will definitely find a way to win some games. Masterman is another team to watch out for in this division.
Nadir Matthews (Bodine)...He will definitely be a huge mark for his team. I know he will contribute big and force teams to play hard defense against him. I think once he picks up and goes, everything will come second nature.
Mike Sturdivant (Masterman)...His court game is as brilliant as his books. He makes the game come easy with his ability to play hard and smart. He has great skill and he takes on all competitors.
Matt Powers (CAPA)...Solid foundation for the season. Make no mistake, he will lead his team and force the whole entire league to pay attention to him. Don't think because he plays for CAPA, that he's overrated.
Marc Price (Carroll)...Good skills and will definitely make his team a lot better, especially not being at Mastbaum anymore. His football ability should definitely help during the season for his team.
Josh Collins (Saul)...Will be much better than last year. He scored over 200 points and is 6'3"...I think he can hold his own for his team this year. I would definitely keep my eye on him.

Division E: New, but has a history look to it. It has some teams that we are familiar with and will make some noise for their team. I know they will be great appreciated with their major players. MCS seems to be the favorite for this league but it's no telling when you have other competitors who feed off rivalries. Constitution is definitely a good looking favorite team for this year for this division. They play a tough non-league schedule and should help them get ready for the regular year. Word Comm comes back stronger this year and has some great experience that should take them into the playoffs.
Xavier Harris (Constitution)...Full of explosiveness and intelligence. When composed, he will have a great year. He makes alot of strong moves and plays bigger than what he is. He is will complimented this season and should get some better open looks in games. I would definitely bet one on one with him on the block.
  Markeith Mont (World Comm)
...Probably the most underrated player around, his size and ability to finish around the basket makes him dangerous. He has different speeds and manages to hold his own weight. He has been undermined by a lot of people and all he sems to do is prove people wrong. Wouldn't shock me, if he lead the entire pub in scoring.
Jeremiah Worthem (MCS)...This kid is one in a million. I heard he's been getting some really good interest lately and plays big against the big time teams. He has the ability to extend defense to the arch and has the athletic ability to go around them. He definitely will be a proven kid this year and will make his mark.
Erik Raleigh/Daiquan Walker (Constitution)...make no mistake about it, these two will be big in many games this year. Great to see that Raleigh got another for school and Walker coming from Roman will be a huge offensive lift. It's not telling how much damage they will do, but it should be a great help for this team this year.
Marquise Richards (Robeson)...Don't pay attention him and watch yourself get smoked. He has tremendous speed and works hard at getting a bucket. He will play big in big games and can shoot lights out. His intensity is really impressive and definitely takes everything to heart. He is a "I can do all things" type of kid.
Other Considerations:
Abdul King & Marvin Champ (Constitution), Walter Holmes (Douglas), Harris Griffin (Eleverson), Tyreek Riddick, Chris Stokes, Warren Dogan, Jeff Powell & Thomas Moore (MCS), Michael Stewart (Parkway W), Andre Washington (Robeson), Elijah Johnson (Lamerton), Shon Phillips & Ichywond Savage (World Comm)

The Catholic League
The league has a different flavor to it. There are no additions this year, but there have been some subtractions. This league is definitely different than last year, with it being all one league. The great part about this league is, you have no clue who might win and who will lose. Carroll seems to be a strong consideration. They work well together and seem to be exceptional but that doesn't take away from Roman Catholic, who bring back a large piece of their good play. Neumann is no joke either, even though they are missing 80% of their starting lineup from last year; that's not an excuse in their book. They still are looking to repeat. Wood & St. Joe's Prep will definitely have a great opportunity to make some noise. They will not take anything for granted and will uphold the name of the school.
Juan'ya Green (Carroll/Niagara)...Moves on top of moves. Hard to stop him from getting to the rim, the does everything without thinking. This kid at one time was definitely one of the largest marketed kids out. Everybody would definitely say he could play with the best of them and he will continue to prove he can this season.
  Lamin Fulton (Neumann-Goretti/St. Peter's)
....Try and stay in front of him and you might lose your mind trying to do so. He is probably the most aggressive player in this league and will take his experience from last year and take it straight to the bank for more than just a hope for winning this year. I see him making a strong point as a leader.
Joe Getz (Wood)...He started the season out dropping 40. NEED I REALLY SAY ANYMORE. He will definitely be a big part of this league. I wouldn't hold my breathe or worry about him making big plays. He will do so, Wood might be the team everybody doesn't expect big things from.
Montana Mayfield (Roman)...should be able to lead his team in many different ways. He has all the tools to help his team exceed expectations. He makes the right play and has the ability to dribble threw defenders and he works hard at all the right things. He will definitely need some help but has a whole bunch of help with the team he has.
Eddie Mitchell (Lasalle/Rider)...I would not sleep on him or his team. They don't look like they are ready to take over the league but might have the pieces to do so. Mitchell is one of those guys you would hate to be in front of. His team is much different with a different concept, but his help will make sure he doesn't leave La Salle with any excuses.
Other Considerations:
Scott & Craig Slade (Bonner), Joe Kehoe & Reggie Charles (Judge), Shane Randall, Yosef Yacob, & Tracy Peal (Carroll), La'Quan Coaxum, Billy Shank, Derrick Stewart & Hanif Sutton (Neumann-Gorretti), Shafeek Taylor, Britton Lee & Fortunat "Junior" Kangudi (Roman), Jamal Nwaniemka (Conwell-Egan), Kenyatta Long & Gerald Scott (McDevitt), Eric Fleming (Ryan), Gene Williams, Steve Vastauria, & Miles Overton (St. Joes Prep), Jack Walsh (Wood)

Inter-Ac
There is no telling who will win this league. I just say "put the names in a hat and pick one", they seem to be all equal strength. They definitely will go into this year with some strong confidence. I expect it to be a really good competitive nature this year.
Jimmy Hammer (Germantown Academy)...Might be the best overall player in this league. No exceptions to what might be done in this league. Definitely skilled and unpredictable. He raises the bar every time he plays.
Brendan Kilpatrick (Malvern)...His team isn't the same as last year but he will definitely make the team feel comfortable with his play. He has a keen eye for the game. Sharp as a knife with his ability to score the ball.
D.C. Gaitley (Episcopal)...Fortunate that he had a brother that could play. I bet he learned some things from him. He seems to be a good contributor in many different ways. Not the cream of the crop but will make his mark.
Andrew Acker (Haverford)....the solid foundation in the middle for this team. He might be a highly underrated kid. He is pretty good around the basket. He has good moments where he shows people how to use the 6'7" frame.
Malik Garner (Chestnut Hill)...Definitely will make his mark this year. Moves inside and outside the paint and can be a big time player in some many ways for this league. I can't see a game where he will struggle, he gets looked towards for so much leadership.

IF THERE ARE ANY MORE ADJUSTMENTS...THAT MEANS KIDS TRANSFER TOO MUCH...LOL.
HAVE A GREAT SEASON AND BEST OF LUCK TO ALL!

PHILLY.COM/RALLY CLASSIC
La Salle 45, Dobbins 28

This is just one of those games you expected to be much of a huge thrill. Both schools have decided to take their school’s basketball program to the next level. They have been invited to some great events this year and will be hot features for both of their respected leagues and what better way to be respected than to play each other. Well, the intent was to play but with a very -- and I mean very --  slow start, Dobbins would lead after the first quarter by 3-2. If that number looks a little funny, you don’t have to check your eyes, the game was slow in the beginning. Only one field goal by Lamar Harrison (2 pts.) was scored in the first quarter. The second quarter would be a little bit better but still slow and by halftime and only 7 field goals together, the score would be 11-7 with La Salle leading. In the second half Jerrell Wright (14 pts. 10 boards 2 blocks) would start his team off with a huge dunk passed in by Basir Fulmore (2 pts. & 4 stls.). Fulmore had been huge in the first half defensively helping get some charges to help keep his team close in the game, but it wouldn’t be enough once Steve Collins (16 pts.) would start to get on a roll. His ability to extend the floor and hit shots kept Dobbins from even getting close to a lead. The huge help for Collins would be Eddie Mitchell (10 pts.), who would help carry his team towards a win by scoring 6 pts. in the fourth quarter alone & with his passes to open players like Amar Stukes (7 pts.), Kevin Piotrowicz & Steve Smith (5 pts.) would help stretch La Salle to a 45–28 win over Dobbins.

DEC. 10
WASHINGTON TIPOFF TOURNAMENT
Great to see basketball open back up with a bang. There is lots of basketball going around this time and I think it’s about that I got out and saw some games. My first stop of the year is Washington High school where 4 teams would start their season hoping to get a early start towards a great season.
West Philly 51, Hope 45

In this game, it featured two teams that are definitely in the process of trying to build something with some young players. Both teams lost some key guys due to graduation and it showed early with both teams looking for some form of leadership and strong play. Hope Charter would look towards Nafee Hardy (19 pts. 7 rbs.). Hardy would get things on the right foot by hitting two 3’s and a layup to start the team off with an 8-2 lead. After a time out West Philly would look towards their leader in Lemier Mitchell (15 pts.), who would make strong plays to the basketball and hit a huge three to start their own run (7-0) of their own. In the second quarter, Larry  Richardson (13 pts.) would add to the lead by scoring 6 of his own to help the team towards a 27-13 lead at half. Hope’s turnovers & miscues would continue with missed free throws and rebounds. Those would be capitalized in the second half with Terrell "Sleepy" Daye (18 pts.), scoring 9 points in the 3rd quarter and leading all fast breaks and rebounding opportunities on the offensive glass. After a 1 point second quarter, Hope would get back on the right page by playing some tough nose defense after being doing 17 in the third quarter. They would go on a deep run by going 15 point straight and 5:30 minutes including the end of the third with scoring well & moving the ball. They would get some keep help from Bruce Clements (6 pts.), Jalil Shafi (6 pts.) & Dante Taylor-Mills (6 pts.) with some key threes and fast break layups, but West was just too much towards the end with key free throws and fast breaks of their own to take the win 51-45.
Washington 91, Robeson 68

There is always something in the public league that looks different then it did the year before, well including the 68 teams this year, WASHINGTON LOOKS A LITTLE LIKE THEIR FOOTBALL TEAM…FAST! & when I say fast, I mean super fast. They just came out the gate and never looked back. A part of this difference is the transfer of Kawaun Chavis (6 pts. & 6 asst.) & Courtland “Redz” Gilliam (11 pts. & 7 asst.). These two stand at 5’10” & are both extremely skilled with handling the ball and seemed to help key returning starter Keith Richardson (18 pts.). Robeson would start out pretty good with Marquise Richards (13 pts.) helping with a quick 7 points, but GW would be powerful with there ability to run the fast break appropriately with Gilliam’s quick assists & Soph. Nafeece Edwards (21 pts.) ability to help complete plays at the rim. Darnell Green (16 pts.) would be big part of the team also with his ability to penetrate and get the ball out on the fast breaks. The lead would only be three after the first quarter. Even with the pickup play by Chester (22 pts.) for Robeson, it just wouldn’t be enough. The lead would continue to grow with the guard speed of Washington. It got to the point, where they were up 30 in the third quarter and Richardson told his team, “They’re too slow. Let’s just keep running." And keeping running, they would. Richardson would “WOW” the crowd with this ability to split 4 guys and get a layup. The lead would slow down once subs were made and Robeson went on an 8-0 run in the fourth but that would be stop with Washington’s ability to slow the ball down and pass the ball around the floor. They would finish the game with a 91-68 win.
