PUBLIC AAAA SEMIFINAL
Washington 13, Northeast 3 (5 inn.)
Washington senior Jake Wright showed why he is one of the most feared
power hitters in the Public League on Wednesday. With the bases loaded, nobody
out and Wright at the plate in the top of the first inning, Northeast sophomore
pitcher Ryan Roffman had nowhere to put the Washington cleanup hitter.
So Wright took a 2-0 fastball to straight away center field and it cleared the
fence for a grand slam. This was Wright's 16th extra-base hit of the season,
which likely leads the Public League.
With the score 4-0 heading into the top of the 2nd, Northeast showed some fight
as senior 2B Daquan Bohannan laced a double down the third base line.
Just like Monday's game against Lincoln, sophomore 1B Jeremiah Alston
singled Bohannan home, this time with a line drive down the left field line that
stayed just fair.
Washington's starting pitcher was Sean Kearney and before the game,
Eagles head coach Ken Geiser said Kearney would only go 1 or 2 innings
before making a switch. Sticking to his word, Geiser went with senior pitcher
Roger Hanson to start the 3rd inning; he came into this game with a
record of 7-0, tied for the Public League lead.
Roffman, who was filling in for Bohannan, who still couldn't pitch due to an
injured shoulder, did an admirable job for a young pitcher in a big game. He
had a clean 2nd inning, but Hanson helped out his own cause in the third inning
with a 2-RBI double to open up the scoring. The Eagles continued to add on runs
in the 4th inning after Northeast scored two in the top half of the inning.
Northeast had some miscues in the field and the potent Washington offense
started to get to Roffman.
Washington will now take on Frankford for the AAAA Classification championship.
The Pioneers defeated a feisty Olney team, 9-6, down at Baldwin Field. SFBN will
be there to cover this classic Northeast Philly rivalry game on Friday
afternoon.
Side Note: This was the final game for Northeast head coach Sam
Feldman, who during his career advanced to four Public League championship
games. We wish Sam all the best in his retirement and congrats on a great
coaching career at Northeast!

PUBLIC AAAA QUARTERFINAL
Northeast 3, Lincoln 1
In a pitcher's duel between Northeast's Shahir Gates and Lincoln's
Dylan Burke, the Vikings came out on top 3-1 to advance to the AAAA
semifinals to take on the Washington Eagles. Northeast played textbook baseball
to get a run home in the second inning. After senior Daquan Bohannan
lined a double down the third base line, senior 3B Manuel Duran grounded
out to first to move Bohannan to third, then sophomore 1B Jeremiah Alston
singled up the middle to bring home Bohannan.
The bats were silent for both teams until the sixth inning when Lincoln tied it
up on a Christian McGovern (sr. RF) sacrifice fly that brought home
freshman C Nick Houser, who led off the inning with a single to right
field.
In the top of the 7th with the score tied at 1-1, Alston worked a leadoff walk
to start things for Northeast. Sophomore DH Ryan Roffman then hit a
taylor-made double-play ball, but an error on the throw to first allowed Roffman
to move to second base. After an infield single by senior CF Ryan Burkhardt,
senior LF Khalil Taylor hit a double to right, just inside the foul line
and just out of the outstretched glove of McGovern.
After an intentional walk to senior RF Jordan Todd, senior C Ramon
Class hit a deep sacrifice fly to left with the bases loaded, scoring an
insurance run for the Vikings. Gates then shut things down in the bottom of the
seventh to allow Sam Feldman to coach at least more game before he
retires as Northeast's baseball coach.
Side Note: Bohannan was slated to start on the mound against Lincoln,
but couldn't go due to a shoulder injury. Coach Feldman said he hopes, "Bohannan
can find the bullets to come back on Wednesday" to pitch against Washington.
