JUNE 15
PIAA PLAYOFFS
FINAL
CLASS AAAA
(At Penn State)
La Salle 3, Council Rock South 1: Kevin Long allowed hits to South's
second and third batters, then a passed ball put runners on second and third. He
escaped unscathed and wound up twirling a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and
one walk as the Explorers became the first CL squad to win a state baseball
title. The RBI went to Colin Pyne, Mike Piscopo and Dom Cuoci on singles and
Corey Baiada started the two-run fourth with a double. South scored on a
three-base error followed by a sac fly. Discounting one shaky inning, Long
fashioned a 1.11 ERA through the playoffs (2.17 total).

PIAA PLAYOFFS
SEMIFINAL
CLASS AAAA
(At Spring-Ford High)
La Salle 7, Hatboro-Horsham 5: P.J. Acierno used a single and triple
(worth two apiece) to bag four RBI and after drawing a walk to bring home an
insurance run, Dom Cuoci fired a 1-2-3 seventh to save Kevin Long's win. The
Explorers rallied from a 5-2 deficit.
CLASS AAA
(At Spring-Ford High)
Lampeter-Strasburg 2, Neumann-Goretti 0: The behavior of some
N-G fans caused S-F officials to summon local police and, irate about the result
of three major calls, coach Mike Zolk maintained the umps had "cheated." The
Saints were no-hit through six. Josh Ockimey (HBP) reached base to start the
seventh and Jimmy Kerrigan fired a double to right-center. A strikeout later,
Joey Glennon, 1-for-22 in the postseason to that point but terrific at second
base, inside-outed a one-run single to right. A squeeze bunt by Mario DiFebbo
got a run home; nope, the plate ump ruled the ball had hit him off the bat. He
also got down the next bunt, but Kerrigan slipped at third and was unable to
score. Meanwhile, Glennon was colliding hard with L-S' second baseman and
obstruction was called. The umps' decision left the bases loaded. A strikeout
and forceout off Nicky Nardini's smoked one-hopper to third ended it.

PIAA PLAYOFFS
QUARTERFINAL
CLASS AAA
(At Muhlenberg High)
Neumann-Goretti 9, Blue Mountain 2: On June 7, a pair of 57-minute
weather delays forced a suspension with the score tied at 2-2 in the home
fourth. Marty Venafro started the resumption with a sac fly and Josh Ockimey
followed with a 380-foot, three-run homer to center. It was his fourth
postseason dinger. Venafro wound up with three RBI on no hits while John LaMotta
(four innings) and Joe Jaep did the pitching.
CLASS AAAA
(At Muhlenberg High)
La Salle 7, Central Dauphin 6: The Explorers overcame deficits of 2-0
and 5-3 and the disappointment of losing a 6-5 lead in the visiting seventh.
Ryan Otis' sacrifice fly to left won it while Chris Melillo went 3-for-4 with
four RBI, a one-run single in the third and a three-run double over the
centerfielder's head in the sixth. Colin Pyne (single) and Tyler Kozeniewski
(triple) drove in runs in the fifth, providing a 3-2 lead. Dom Cuoci took a
liner off the inner part of his left foot in the third and toughed out five
innings. The win went to Mike Piscopo, who moved over from third base and gloved
a liner to retire the one batter he faced.

CLASS A
(At Unionville High)
Lancaster County Christian 5, GAMP 1: The Pioneers were held to three
hits and their lone run was scored in the third by Desmond Drummond on a
misplayed grounder off the bat of Nick Carine. They took a 1-0 lead into the
fifth.

Kevin Long
scattered five hits and fanned three over six innings, and helped himself with
two RBI. The Explorers' five-run fourth, reversing a 1-0 deficit, was
highlighted by Chris Melillo's two-run double.

Neumann-Goretti 2, Twin Valley 0
Joe Kinee
went the distance, allowing seven hits, striking out five and wriggling out of
bases-loaded situations in the fourth through sixth innings. TV stranded 12
runners total. Kinee's single drove in
the first run and Josh Ockimey added a homer.

The Chargers were held to four hits (all singles).

An RBI single in
the fourth inning by Aderly Perez, one of his team's three hits, enabled
Esperanza to avoid a shutout.

GAMP 5, Calvary Christian 4 (8 inn.)
The
Pioneers scored in the visiting eighth on a single by Jake Kurtz. Kurtz (5 1/3
innings) and Desmond Drummond (four Ks in 2 2/3) did the pitching. The first batter to face
Drummond bounced into a doubleplay from Kurtz (at third) to Tyler Criniti (at
first, impressive scoop). Drummond (three) and Criniti combined for five hits. GAMP created a
4-4 tie in the sixth as Nick Carine made it home from third before a purposely
created rundown could erase a
runner off first. This game started the previous day (one scoreless inning) at Great
Valley High before rain intervened.

Council Rock South 6, Frankford 2:
At Spring-Ford High, assorted rain delays pushed back the
starting time from 3 to 4:40.
The Pioneers scored once in the fifth on Carlos Ramirez' RBI single
and again in the seventh when at attempt at a doubleplay went awry.
With two men on base, Augusto "June" Ortega grounded into a force
play to end it.

At Richie Ashburn Field
La Salle 14, Frankford 1 (6 inn.): Looking into a noonday
sun (the game started at 12:17), shortstop Ricky Alvarez was unable
to catch an opening popup. Four walks and a sac fly later, La Salle
owned a 3-0 lead and all hints of drama took the afternoon off.
Corey Baiada bagged three RBI while P.J. Acierno, Chris Melillo and
Tyler Kozeniewski thirded six. Dom Cuoci allowed three hits and
whiffed five and Frankford’s run was unearned. The game was
emotional for Frankford coach Juan Namnun and La Salle assistant Bob
Peffle, who starred at Frankford and experienced major coaching
success there with Namnun as his chief assistant.
CLASS AAA CITY TITLE
At Richie Ashburn Field
Neumann-Goretti 13, Phila. Electrical 0 (6 inn.): Joe Jaep hurled a
two-hitter with four strikeouts while Josh Ockimey used a double and
sac fly to post two RBI. Joey Gorman and Anthony Adams had two hits
apiece. The loss left the Pub with a 46-2 scoring disadvantage in
four years of AAA City Titles.

At La Salle High
Springfield Montco 8, Esperanza 2:
Esperanza fell in the
final of a subregional formed by representatives from Districts 1
and 12. Three walks and an infield error enabled the Toros to score
in the first. A fifth-inning run was produced when Raul Escolatico
walked, Victor Nunez managed an infield single and losing pitcher
Ralphy Ramos sent an RBI single to left. The Toros' other hit was a
seventh inning double by Franklyn Mejia.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At
Widener University)
Neumann-Goretti 5, La Salle 4 (8 inn.)
With one out and soph Joe Lolio, a 5-3, 148-pound pinch-runner
recently promoted from the JV, on first base, Joe Kinee was ordered
to bunt for a hit by coach Mike Zolk. Not exactly confident because
he’d failed to get one down in fair territory all season, Kinee did
so this time and a wild throw enabled Lolio, running on the pitch,
to dash all the way home and give N-G its second consecutive title
and third in four years. In sweltering heat/humidity, three days
after having two ribs popped back into place by Dr. John Law, a
relative of catcher Nicky Nardini, Joey Gorman threw 144 pitches
before being switched to left field one batter into the eighth. The
win went to John LaMotta, who’d thrown nine relief innings four days
earlier in a 14-inning semifinal win over Bonner. Josh Ockimey
clubbed a two-run homer in the third while Joey Glennon (sac fly)
and Anthony Adams (single) had RBI in a two-run sixth, creating a
4-4 tie. Nardini and Marty Venafro became just the second and third
players to start for three CL champions. Frank Ryan did so for St.
James from 1961 to ’63. For La Salle, Kevin Long went the distance
and Chris Melillo posted two RBI (sac fly, single).
CLASS AA DISTRICT 1-12 SUBREGIONAL PLAYOFF
(At Immaculata College)
Springfield Montco 4, Conwell-Egan 2: The Eagles
were held to three hits and fanned 12 times in a showdown for the
right to face Esperanza Academy. Springfield scored one apiece in
the sixth and seventh after C-E's Mike Petrizzi delivered a two-run
single in the fifth.

PUBLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At Richie Ashburn Field)
Frankford 8, GAMP 3: The heroes were numerous as Frankford became the
first three-major-sports Pub team to win seven titles in a 10-year
period since Overbrook did so in basketball from 1950 to '59. Making
his third consecutive title-game start, Rafael "Omar" Cruz pitched a
four-hitter with eight strikeouts while racking up win No. 2. After
losing pitcher Desmond Drummond provided immediate fireworks with a
two-run homer over the fence in right-center, Frankford responded
with three runs in the bottom half on Hector Cerda's RBI double and
Kevin Montero's two-run single. Augusto "June" Ortega laced a
three-run double in the fourth.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIS
La Salle 10, Carroll 0 (5 inn.): At Philadelphia
University, Dom Cuoci pitched four-hit shutout ball and joined Tyler
Koziniewski in stroking a two-run single in a five-run fourth. Corey
Baiada went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI while P.J. Acierno
slugged a solo homer. Matt Maerz (double) and Justin Roman (triple)
laced extra base hits for Carroll.
Neumann-Goretti 8, Bonner 7 (14 inn.): At Widener University,
everyone got a late start to the holiday weekend as this baby lasted
4 hours, 15 minutes, and tied the city record for longest playoff
game, innings-wise (also a '71 Pub semi). Junior righthander John
LaMotta, who had pitched just one league inning all season (and had
absorbed the Saints' lone CL loss), went an amazing nine innings
(most allowed by PIAA rule) to get the win. He allowed one run, four
hits and whiffed 10, and only 21 of his 97 pitches were balls. Josh
Ockimey capped a three-run third, pulling N-G into a 4-4 tie, by
clobbering a home run to dead center that cleared the 400-foot mark
by a lot. Also, he ended the game at 8:12, with darkness warming up
in the bullpen, by milking a four-pitch walk. For Bonner, Jim Haley
went 3-for-5 and scored three times while Frank Saviski turned two
hits into as many RBI. The teams combined for 23 hits (five for
extra bases) and 14 errors, and left 33 runners on base. A whopping
424 pitches were thrown.

PUBLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at Ashburn Field)
Frankford 11, Washington 1 (6 inn): Returning from a several-games
break caused by the need to help resolve some family issues, Hector
Cerda allowed just one hit over five innings and went 2-for-4 with a
triple and one RBI in the three spot. Ramon Rosario lined a two-run
single in a five-run first and Ricky Alvarez circled the bases in
the third for an imitation “grand slam.” The play should have gone
for a two-run single. Cerda cracked a one-run triple in the sixth
and scored, after two intentional walks, on a single by Rafael
“Omar” Cruz over the head of the drawn-in leftfielder. Ian Dougherty
singled in Washington’s run.
GAMP 9, Central 7: Soph Jake Kurtz toughed out a 134-pitch,
11-hit, six-walk outing and did not record his lone strikeout until
the seventh. Nonetheless, he held Central scoreless over the last
three innings while his teammates were erupting for seven runs to
rally from a 7-2 deficit. In a five-run sixth, which made it 8-7,
Nick Carine (2-for-4, three RBI) thumped a two-run double to tie the
score and Desmond Drummond (3-for-3) raced home on a wild pitch. The
Lancers regained momentum in the bottom half as Tom Benek doubled.
However, pinch-runner Michael Duson was tagged out at third by
Drummond after falling for a fake pickoff play by Kurtz. That exact
same scenario had doomed Central in the 1986 final. Gabe Buchanan
led Central’s batters with a 4-for-5 performance while Benek went
3-for-4 with two RBI.
MAY 22
CATHOLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Neumann-Goretti 8, Wood 4: The visiting Vikings
jumped to a 2-0 lead on John "Beef" Santospago's bomb of a two-run
homer in the first, but N-G answered right away with a two-run
triple off the bat of Josh Ockimey (3 RBI total). Joey Gorman went
the distance, allowing eight hits and fanning as many, and Marty
Venafro raised his career hit total to 101 with bunt and regular
singles. Jimmy Kerrigan's triple started a three-run fourth.
Bonner 5, Ryan 3: Ronnie Scull fanned 10 in six-plus innings and
got the win with save help from his across-the-street neighbor,
Frank Saviski. Jack Liberatore and Joe Haley posted one RBI apiece
while Jim Haley, Joe's brother, halved four hits with Saviski. For
visiting Ryan, which started no seniors, Gage Galeone went 3-for-4
with one RBI.
La Salle 6, SJ Prep 0: Senior righthander Kevin Long, a Lehigh
commit, spun a one-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts. The
visitors' lone safety came in the fourth as Jawan McAllister beat
out an along-the-line dribbler maybe 50 feet toward third baseman
Mike Piscopo. In the fifth, Long was hit on the foot by Sean
Connolly's liner. He recovered to get the out. Corey Baiada and
Colin Pyne halved two doubles, four RBI.
Carroll 4, Lansdale 3: Eric McGough, a junior righthander, became
just the fourth pitcher to record as many as 14 strikeouts in a CL
playoff. The record is 16, by Carroll's Keith Conway in 1991.
McGough also allowed six hits and three walks. Justin Roman went
3-for-3 with one RBI and Joe DiWilliams provided a 4-2 lead with a
suicide squeeze. Lansdale's Pat Duggan posted two RBI. Carroll was
the higher seed, but opted to play at a neutral site (Wood) due to
concerns about the small size of Carroll's home field.
MAY 21
PUBLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Washington 11, Esperanza 6: Mike Honick went 3-for-4 with a walk and
four RBI and Ian Dougherty smacked a two-run double to fuel a five-run
sixth. Dean Grande had an RBI single, scored twice and gunned down
two basestealers. Aaron Keen went four innings. Esperanza's Franklyn Mejia
launched a three-run homer.
Frankford 11, Phila. Elec. 1 (6 inn.): Ramon Rosario fanned six in
4.1 innings and went 2-for-4 with a triple, homer and three RBI. Kevin
Montero added two hits and as many RBI.
GAMP 9, Lincoln 3: The Pioneers managed just one earned run and
Tyler Criniti reached base four times without collecting a hit. Desmond
Drummond (five innings) and Criniti did the pitching.
Central 10, Fels 0 (5 inn.): Mike Cavallaro stroked a two-run single
en route to three RBI, Ryan Dydak added two steals to three hits and Anthony DeVito turned
two hits into a like number of RBI. Christian Walsh
allowed four hits, dismissed seven.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FIRST ROUND
Ryan 9, Judge 1: Matt Budny struck out eight in
five innings while Bob Romano, Dylan Egan (two RBI apiece) and Jason Dones (two runs scored) all went 2-for-3. Roman and Dones doubled. Tim
Ross tripled for Judge.
Wood 7, Conwell-Egan 6: Justin Babb whiffed five in three relief
innings and a four-run home seventh made him a winner. Two walks and
a single loaded the bases. Brendan St. Thomas (one run), Matt Mandes
(two) and Rich Rosenbaum (one, over a drawn-in outfield) all lashed
singles to account for the RBI. Rosenbaum went 4-or-5 with two RBI. Benji Abercrombie went 3-for-3 and scored twice.
Lansdale 11, McDevitt 1 (5 inn.): Brian Farrell went 2-for-3 with
a double and four RBI while Rick Norwood doubled, scored twice and had
one RBI. Pat Duggan went 4.2 innings for the win.
SJ Prep 4, O'Hara 3: Ryan Winton pitched a seven-hitter with no walks
and two strikeouts. Tim Rafter and Chris Stallings posted singles to
drive in the final runs in a four-run sixth, which erased a two-run
deficit. Skyler Mornhinweg went 3-for-4 with a run scored and made a
tough scoop at first to end the game; a runner was on third.
MAY 18
PUBLIC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
CLASS AAA FINAL
Phila. Elec. 7, Swenson 5: After the teams played error-free ball for
nine half-innings, PE scored six runs in the home fifth with the
help of four miscues. Elliot Castillo's two-run double was the lone
hit in the uprising, which broke a 1-1 tie. Ray Guinther went the
distance, posting three of his nine whiffs in the seventh. Swenson's
Brian Nieves had a two-run single.
CLASS AA FINAL
Esperanza 10, Prep Charter 7: Ralphy Ramos struck
out seven while toughing out an eight-hitter and Jamuel Cruz
contributed a two-run double to a three-run second, providing a 6-4
lead.
CLASS A FINAL
GAMP 2, Masterman 1: Jake Kurtz fired a one-hitter
with 10 Ks and two walks while Desmond Drummond and Tyler Criniti
scored first inning runs on an error. Masterman's Nate Vahedi also
fanned 10.

PUBLIC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
CLASS AAAA QUALIFIERS
Washington 10, Overbrook 3: Jake Wright went 3-for-3, scored twice
and drove in 5 runs. Corey Sharp went 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored.
Aaron Keen pitched the first 3 innings.
Central 14, Olney 3: Gabe Buchanan struck out 6 in 4 innings and
went 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Kyle Newcomb (4 RBI) and Tom
Benek (2-for-2, 3 RBI) also contributed.
Frankford 15, Bartram 0: Rafael "Omar" Cruz struck out 6 and
walked 1 in 3 innings. He also went 2-for-2, scored twice and drove
in 2 runs. Augusto "June" Ortega scored 4 times.
Fels 6, Edison 2: Michael Moya hit a grand slam in the visiting
7th and finished 2-for-3. Eliantonio Martinez went 2-for-4 and
struck out 11 batters in 7 innings.
Lincoln 9, Northeast 6: With 2 outs 2 strikes in the 3rd, Jairo
Bautista hit a 2-run homer. Dylan Burke drove in 2 runs and struck
out 5.
DISTRICT 1-12 SUBREGIONAL
CLASS A SEMIFINALS
GAMP 4, MaST Charter 3: Tyler Criniti was hit by a
pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th and Jacob
Kurtz trotted home with the winning run. Criniti got the win in
relief.
Masterman 15, Lamberton 0: Nate Vahedi hit a home run in the 3rd
and finished 4-for-4 with 3 RBI. Augie Legido went 2-for-4, drove in
4 runs and whiffed 7 for the win.
REGULAR SEASON
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Malvern 10, Germantown Academy 1: Joe Poduslenko drove in 3 runs and
scored twice as the Friars finished perfect in Inter-Ac play (at
10-0) for the first time in 63 seasons of membership. Also, they're
just the fourth perfect I-A squad in 34 years, joining Penn Charter
in '81 and '86 and GA in 2004. Nick Bateman went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI
while Joe Ravert fanned 8 in a 4-hitter.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Lansdale 8, Conwell-Egan 6: Matt Gress, LC's sixth
pitcher, posted 2 shutout innings and became the winner thanks to
Pat Carney's 2-run single. In LC's 3-run seventh, Kevin Neumann
stroked a 2-run single and then stole home. Beau Fleming drew a
4-pitch walk to make it 6-6 in the bottom half.
Carroll 4, Wood 1: The Patriots' fourth included Justin Roman's
leadoff homer and Matt Maerz's 2-run single. Eric McGough posted the
win with 4 strikeouts in 4 innings.
La Salle 10, Judge 0: Dom Cuoci struck out 3 and walked 1 as the
Explorers finished 12-0 in Red. Chris Melillo drove in 3 runs and
scored twice. Corey Baiada added 2 hits, 3 RBI.
Bonner 8, SJ Prep 7: Ronnie Scull's 2-run single highlighted a
4-run home seventh, then Jack Liberatore's RBI on a fielder's choice
capped a 3-run rally in the 10th. Frank Saviski won in relief.
O'Hara 4, Ryan 1: Bob Ieradi smoked a 2-run triple to support Nick
Donovan (6-hitter).
MAY 16
INTER-AC LEAGUE
SCH Academy 4, Penn Charter 0:
Matt "Squeeze" Kozemchak scattered six hits and halved 4 hits with
Sam Feirson. Zach Jancarski and Matt Caldwell posted RBI doubles.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Neumann-Goretti 8, McDevitt
0: Senior lefty Joey Gorman (Saint Joseph's) threw a
no-hitter and came within a walk of a perfect game as he improved
his record to 6-0. He faced the minimum 21 batters, struck out 11
and walked just one in the second inning (erased on doubleplay. The
Saints also won the Blue Division title at 9-1.
La Salle 12, Judge 1:
Emergency starter John Scheffey pitched the first 4 innings for the
win and Chris Melillo belted a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning.
O’Hara 5, Ryan 2:
Nick Donovan blasted a pair of doubles and knocked in a run while
Scott Grinnan added a single and a double to make a winner of Mark
Onimus.
Bonner 10, SJ Prep 7:
Jim Haley hit a pair of singles along with a double while Frank
Saviski chipped in with a double, 2 singles and 3 RBI.
MAY 14
PUBLIC AAA SEMIFINALS
Phila. Elec. 13, Eng. and Science 3 (5 inn.): Danny LaPorte went the
distance and had two hits, three RBI. Thomas Hicks doubled twice for
two
RBI.
Swenson 7, Franklin Towne 4 (9 inn.): Josh Durkin singled in the
winning run with two outs in the visiting ninth. Freshman Brian Nieves
had three hits and scored twice while Zach Finch went 2-for-4 with 4
RBI. John Fox went the distance, allowing six hits and two earned runs.
PUBLIC AA SEMIFINALS
Prep Charter 10, Phila. Academy 4: Pete Piccoli whiffed 13 in six
innings of four-hit, one-run ball while Justin Bocelli and Christian Coppola had
matching stats (single, double, two runs scored). Keegan McKoskey,
Frank Suppa and Sal Convento all lofted sac flies to right. Jorge
Martinez had a double and two RBI for PA.
Esperanza 14, Bracetti 3: Pitcher Giovanni Victoria was 3-for-3
with a three-run double in a six-run first. Jamuel Cruz smacked a two-run
homer en route to three RBI.
REGULAR SEASON
Wood 13, Carroll 6: Wood clubbed six homers, a performance
highlighted by Kevin Sullivan’s grand slam and two by Tim
Greenfield.
Lansdale 9, Conwell-Egan 2: Jon Motts knocked in 2 runs with 2
hits.
MAY 11
PUBLIC AAA QUARTERFINALS
