PUBLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At Ashburn Field)
Frankford 9, Franklin Towne 2: Kidanny Cumba and Tim DiGiorgio halved
six RBI and six errors helped the Pioneers score five unearned runs while
claiming their third consecutive title. They'd finished the Pub regular
season on a six-game losing streak and their eight league losses matched the
total of the five previous champions. Eduardo "Cheese" Sanchez went the
distance, allowing four hits while whiffing 11. FT's Brian Bradley went
2-for-3 with one RBI.
MAY 25
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
La Salle 10, SJ Prep 0 (5 inn.)
(At Widener University)
In the teams' fifth meeting of the season, played on Saturday of
Memorial Day Weekend, the Explorers finalized a 3-2 edge on the strength of
five runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings. This was the first year of
a double-elimination format. Prep won two of the three regular season
meetings, then La Salle triumphed twice in a five-day period to avoid game
No. 6. Working on three days' rest, Dominic Cuoci allowed one hit -- Shane
Williams' fourth inning single -- and recorded 12 groundball outs. La
Salle's first run scored on Jimmy Herron's RBI single to third base.
Literally. The ball bounced off the bag. Chris Melillo and John Fabriziani
(game-ender) stroked RBI hits in each uprising. This was coach Joe Parisi's
fourth CL crown (also '88, '94 and '05). The Prep's boss was Joe Falcone, a
former La Salle assistant and even the head coach in '04 when Parisi enjoyed
a sabbatical.
MAY 24
CATHOLIC PLAYOFF, ELIMINATION GAME
SJ Prep 10, Ryan 3
(At La Salle University)
In conditions better suited for late-November football, the Hawks
advanced on the strength of an eight-run second. Six tallies were unearned,
though Frank Santore (single) and Chase Standen (triple) lashed hits worth
two runs apiece. Standen added a third RBI on a fourth inning groundout.
Shane Williams went 2-for-3 with a double, sac fly and two RBI. Colin
Cunningham allowed five hits over six innings. It was cold and windy
throughout and rain, which came down briefly at a 45-degree angle, caused a
36-minute delay in the bottom of the fifth.
MAY 21
