On Nov. 30, 2010, Imhotep Charter senior football star Devin Sanders won the first Gary Butler Memorial
Sportsmanship Award, as presented by the Gridiron Chapter, one of two groups that supplies referees to the
Philadelphia Public League League.
Tom McClain, representing the group on behalf of the president, Marty Shields, presented the award to
Devin during a ceremony at Imhotep. On hand were all football players and other members of the senior class.
McClain said "No. 2 from Imhotep" -- was mentioned by a number of referees as someone who had
exhibited strong sportsmanship all season and would be worthy of receiving this award.
"The Imhotep people were great," McClain said. "From the principal on down. They turned this into a
very special day for Devin. I was happy to be a part of it."
Gary Butler, an extremely popular official, passed last summer.
