With Greg White's 1,338 rushing yards this past season, West Catholic has now had a 1,000-yard rusher in 14 straight seasons. This just happens to be the length of the TedSilary, com website. West did not have a rusher reach 1,000 yards in 1999. This is by far the longest current streak amongst all of the city teams. In fact, the next two closest are Wood and Imhotep, who currently possess four consecutive seasons of a 1,000-yard rusher. The next longest streak over these past 14 seasons was posted SJ Prep with 10 (2000-2009). Following the Hawks is CHA/SCH Academy with a streak of six (2006-2011). In 2007 our city league teams produced 22 1,000-yard rushers, which is the high water mark since 2000. In 2001, city teams only produced six 1,000-yard rushers. All of the programs that have been around for the last 14 years have at least one 1,000-yard rusher to their credit. But five of them only have one: Bonner-Prendie (2009), Episcopal (2004), Northeast (2005), Edison (2007), and Central (2013) was added this season with Walter Pegues' (1,187 yards) campaign. Fels (2006), Prep Charter (2007), Lansdale Cath (2008), and Mastery North (2012) joined their leagues after the 2000 season and have not yet notched a 1,000-yard rusher. West Catholic has had a total of 17 1,000-yard+ seasons in the last 14 years. Ten different players have contributed to the success. The average 1,000-yard rushing season for the Burrs has looked like this: 13 games, 206 carries, 1,622 yards, & 20 TDs. Curtis Brinkley (2001-02-03) had three seasons of 1,000+ yards and holds city career marks for most rushing yards in a season (2,813) and career (7,413). In 2007, Rob Hollomon and Raymond Maples each rushed for 1,000 yards. One year later QB Curtis Drake joined them in what is believed to be the only time three teammates eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark. The trio of Drake-R. Hollomon-Maples carried the ball 406 times in 2008 for 4,871 yards. That was good for 12.0 yards per carry between them. Also, 76 of those carries (18.7%) produced a touchdown.  Five other times since 2000 have a pair of teammates surpassed 1,000-yards rushing in the same season; Carroll (2002), SJ Prep (2003), Wood (2010 & 2011), and Imhotep (2012).

THANKSGIVING RIVALRY
PUBLIC-PUBLIC
West Philly 14, Overbrook 8 (2 OT)

On the last five Thanksgivings yours truly has had the pleasure of covering the SJ Prep-Malvern clash. At least a couple of those games were played at Villanova, with the others in the cozy confines of Plymouth-Whitemarsh. This year’s SJP-MP game was moved up and played last Friday, so today I had a new assignment with twelve games on the docket. Yep, it was down to good ‘ol 58th & Elmwood and Bartram Field. Thanks to heavy rains yesterday field conditions weren’t exactly optimal for good offensive football. Serious mud existed from 40-to-40, and even beyond those points was dicey until you got towards the 15-yard lines and in. Oh well, it was still a game to see and it had its moments like all do. Early on, West sr. RB Eric Davis appeared to be wearing special cleats. In the first half he had runs of 10 yards or more five times. Early in the second quarter he started right, then somehow cut back through Mudville for an impressive 73-yard touchdown. Jr. OL/DL Teair Tart-Spencer (6’5”, 290-lbs) powered in for the conversion and a 8-0 Speedboy lead. Later in the quarter, Davis ripped-off a 24-yard run and then followed that with a 45-yard sprint. Credit jr. DL Shafiq Taylor with super hustle to bring Davis down at the 9-yard line. Thus, saving what looked like another long Davis score. Two plays later, Davis gained two yard to the seven, but would ding an ankle/knee and hobble off. WP had no timeouts at this points, so the ‘Brook bench was thinking that the Speedboys were trying to pull a fast one. With their best player so far? I didn’t feel it. Davis limped off and never did return. He finished with 170 yards on 11 carries. West Philly’s threat ended one play later when QB Lavelle Harper slipped and fumbled. Sr. QB/DB Takieyn Harris made the recovery for the Panthers to end the half. To start the second half the Speedboys had major complications while in punt formation. Eventually, Panthers sr. LB Daniel Stephenson scooped-up the slippery pigskin and scored from twenty-one yards out. Sr. RB Maurice Jarmon added the conversion run to deadlock things. From here? How about a whole lot of nothing? Nine combined possessions produced a total of negative-12 yards, two first downs (One thanks to a penalty), and eight punts. The other possession ended after two plays and with time expiring. When the game moved to OT the thought was that some positive movement could be had. Heading towards the far end zone, the field was more than manageable. Alas, the execution was not. At least not initially. WP started first and had runs of zero, minus-5, minus-10 (Sack by Harris), and an incomplete pass on fourth down. For, ‘Brook they had runs of minus-3, minus-2, and incomplete pass, and an interception (Soph. DB Mitchell Hudgins). Moving to overtime #2 the Panthers began things. The series went as follows; two-yard run, minus-2 on a run, and consecutive misfires by sr. QB Michael Williams. Then, it happened! On the game’s 80th offensive play we had our first completed pass, as Harper hit sr. WR/DB Stephen Pressley for nine yards to the one. On second down, Harper  was stopped for no gain, but after a timeout he once again tried a sneak and was successful for the win. Mom, put on the biscuits, I’m coming home. Smile! Earlier in the year these teams met with Overbrook winning, 2-0. They held the Speedboys to just six yards of offense. Today, WP returned the favor; holding the Panthers to three yards on 38 offensive snaps. However, take away Davis’ first half exploits for WP and they were held to negative-35 yards on 33 other plays. Phew! Defensively, I was impressed with Tart-Spencer who had ten tackles, including 6 for losses. He also stripped and recovered a fumble. Soph. two-way lineman Kwadere Fleming (6’3”, 265-lbs) also had a few impressive moments on both sides of the ball. He ended with 6 stops; with four going for losses. Pressley added a pick. SR. LB Ericson Tarlue hustled for 7 tackles (5 solos). For Overbrook, Taylor (5 stops) also notched a fumble recovery. D-12/1 2A SUBREGIONAL SEMIFINAL
West Catholic 26, New Hope Solebury 7

Not much was known about the Burrs’ opponent entering this game, so it was hard to get a read on how competitive this one would be. The Lions, who play in the Bicentennial League, were game throughout, though. They battled and frustrated the speedier Burrs for pretty much the duration. And in the end, I doubt West Head Coach Brian Fluck was overly beaming with his team’s performance. Still, a win was garnered and that is never too much of a bad thing. Now, West will play powerful Imhotep Charter, who thumped Springfield-Montco (53-7), in the other semifinal. Ok, so how did this one unfold? After a forcing a three-and-out on the Lions’ first possession, the Burrs needed 9 plays to march 63 yards for the game’s first score. Soph. FB Andre Mintze did the honors on a 5-yard burst. On the drive, jr. QB Antwain McCollum connected with sr. WR/DB Patrick Amara (21 yards) and jr. WR/DB Ahkil Crumpton (18 yards). Star sr. RB Greg White added a 19-yard burst to also aid the drive.  Later in the opening quarter West would begin a drive at NHS’s 30-yard line after a 15-yard punt return by Crumpton. Runs of 11 & 17 yards by White moved the ball to the 2-yard line as the quarter ended. Then, White scored on the opening play of the second quarter from here. NHS would chop into the lead midway thru the 2nd quarter after sr. LB Kevin Jarrett recovered a fumble at the West 41-yard line. With the help of a 15-yard personal foul penalty on West, the Lions used 7 plays to march into the end zone, as sr. QB Connor Hayden burrowed in from the one on a sneak to make the score, 12-7.  After the intermission, the Burrs got a big play from Crumpton (3-85) who made a leaping catch over two NHS defenders. The play covered 50 yards and put the ball at the NHS 29-yard line. Next, McCollum converted a 4th-and-8 chance with a 12-yard scramble to the 5-yard line. Two plays later, freshman RB Calil Wortham scooted in from the six to make it, 18-7. West would ice the game the next time they had the ball when White zoomed 70 yards untouched around the right edge. A trio of West wideouts provided guidance to paydirt. Wortham added the conversion catch from McCollum to close out the scoring. In the waning seconds, NHS had a chance on a fourth-and-one from the the one-yard line, but jr. LB Neil Satterwhite and Mintze stopped Hayden for a one-yard loss. For West, White finished with 159 yards on 19 carries. This output was good enough to put him over 3,000 yards for his career (3,020). Interestingly, White accomplished this feat in only 19 starts as a varsity player. He did carry the ball 31 times for 244 yards in 8 games as a back-up as a sophomore. White is now the 5th recent Burr rusher to eclipse the 3,000-yard milestone; Curtis Brinkley ’02, Dennis Shaw ’06, Rob Hollomon ’08, and Brandon Hollomon ’10. Also, Dave Williams ’12 (2,862 yards as a Burr in 2 seasons) is in the 3,000-yard club, but he ended his career last year at Imhotep Charter. McCollum ended the game 5-for-9, for 106 yards. Defensively, the Burrs got a strong performance from a number of guys. Jr. DB Dave Swen led with ten tackles (8 solos). Jr. OLB/DE Romeo Gunt (9 total stops) and Satterwhite (8 stops) each registered a pair of sacks. Sr. DE Jalil Branch (5 tackles) also added a sack. Soph. LB Amir Postley hustled for 8 tackles, while sr. DL Anthony Ukaha (2 TFLs) had a strong game on the line. The South Philly Super Site has become a home away from home for the Burrs. Since the 2008 season the Burrs are now (16-0) at this site. Going back even further to before its conversion as a super site, the Burrs have won 19 straight here. Their last loss at 10th & Bigler came in the 2000 season (27-0) to Neumann.

CATHOLIC AAAA SEMIFINAL
La Salle 35, Father Judge 0
Roughly a month of ago the Explorers used a late fourth quarter touchdown to nip the Crusaders, 17-16, in a hard-fought regular season tussle played between these squads. So, a repeat of that nip-and-tuck affair probably loomed in the minds of many tonight. Not an unreasonable thought, right? Ahem, think again. La Salle’s offense, led by jr. QB Kyle Shurmur and jr. WR Jimmy Herron, was simply surgical throughout. Its performance was a masterpiece, actually. Shurmur tied a city league postseason record with FIVE TD passes (matching the feat of Roman's Chris Johnson-Cruz in 2011); with three going to Herron.  And the dominance started right from the get-go, too. The Explorers needed just 5 plays and 2:24 of clock to cover 80 yards for the game’s first score. A 35-yard toss-and-catch featuring the aforementioned duo got things rolling on the game’s second play. Then, three plays later, the Shurmur-to-Herron partnership connected for 27 yards in the right side of the end zone. Judge’s first possession produced a a three-and-out and a punt back to LaSalle. This time the Explorers were much more methodical in their marching ways. On a fourth-and-9 from the twelve, Shurmur neatly found jr. RB Jordan Meachum on an inside post for the second La Salle TD. This drive covered 53 yards on 10 plays. Next, a promising Judge drive would stall at the LS 22-yard line, as a 14-yard holding penalty was a killer in this sequence. Wasting little time when getting the ball back; Shurmur connected with a leaping Herron over the middle. The play covered 50 yards and placed the ball at the FJ 28-yard line. Three plays later, Shurmur while rolling to his right, found a sprawling Herron in the front of the end zone near the cone. Just a tremendous grab by Herron! With the game just over 14 minutes old the Explorers held a commanding 21-0 lead and would basically never look back. To start the second half the La Salle defense forced a three-and-out and set-up the offense at their 43-yard line. It would take LaSalle eight plays to march the necessary yardage. Shurmur tossed TD #4 to soph. WR Charles Headen (7-46) on a nicely orchestrated bubble screen covering ten yards. Touchdown #5 would come a short time later and the next time the Explorers had the ball. Again, they converted on fourth down. This time the scoring play covered 15 yards to Herron, who easily secured his third entry to paydirt. With 29.2 seconds left in the third quarter we entered mercy rule proportions. This would be the end of the night for Shurmur, Herron, and company. For the game, Shurmur finished 18-for-22, for 258 yards. Herron ended with 7 catches for 167 yards. That receiving yardage came a single yard short of a La Salle record; held by Colin Buckley (’11) with 168 yards. Herron now holds 20 receiving TDs over the last two seasons. The city record for a career is 28. Six players held the TD record with four before Johnson-Cruz and Shurmur came along. Interestingly, offensive coordinator and Explorer all-timer Brett Gordon was not one of the six. However, three other former La Salle QBs were among those sharing what had been the tie: John Harrison ('06), Drew Loughery ('08), and Chris Kane ('12). Brett may have not shared in the touchdown record, but his tutelage with all four of these kids certainly assisted in their achievements. All total, La Salle churnedout 411 yards on 63 plays from scrimmage. They amassed a staggering 25 first downs in the game. Meachum led eleven ball carriers with 68 yards on 14 carries. The troops on the OL were outstanding. They included: sr. C Bill Frusco, G’s sr. David Geppert and soph. Matt McDermott, and T’s sr. Zaire Franklin and soph. Anthony Piscopo. Rotating in were sr. Vince Cicalese, sr. Tyler Fallon, and jr. Aiden Kerrigan. The Explorers defense wasn’t too shabby either. Six times they sacked FJ quarterbacks. Notching these were; sr. DE Ryan Coonahan (4 stops total), jr. DL Keith Wagner, jr. DL Fletcher Grady, Piscopo, and sr. Raekwon Caswell (Two). The Explorers used a team approach to hold the Crusaders to 154 yards of offense. Sr. DB Mike Koller had five pass defends. LaSalle will now play in their sixth straight championship game and 7th in eight years. They have won all of these. For Judge, soph. RB/DB Yeedee Thaenrat is a keeper. I really like this kid’s potential and I foresee some big outings coming his way moving forward. In this one he produced 87 of his 93 rushing yards (10 carries) in the first half. He dinged his knee on the kickoff to start the second half and was down for a few minutes. He later came back and ripped-off a 59-yard TD on a screen pass. Alas, the score was brought back on a holding call. Yep, it was that kind of night for the ‘Saders. Jr. QB Zach Carroll ended 8-for-18, for 57 yards. Soph. WR Prince Smith made three catches for 20 yards. Defensively, jr. DE Jowell Agyedu notched a pair of sacks. Sr. DL Tom Bayer (Sack) had some impressive moments with five total stops. Sr. DE Anthony Galasso recovered a fumble. Sr. LB Jim Galasso had a game-high seven stops., while Smith added 5 solo tackles. Judge was hampered by nine penalties in the game. La Salle will play the winner of tomorrow’s Roman/SJ Prep Semifinal.

OCT. 26
PCL 3A
O’Hara 41, Lansdale Catholic 21
The Crusaders took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards on 10 plays for the game’s first score. Using their multi-rusher approach they were able to gain significant yardage on the first nine of these plays. However, it was a pass that allowed them to find payturf, as jr. QB/DB Joe Pinzka somehow placed the pigskin over two O’Hara defenders and into the waiting arms of sr. TE/DE Zach Talley, who definitely used his 6’3”, 225-lb frame to his advantage here. The Lions, who have had a disappointed season in terms of the win-loss department, probably weren’t feeling all that great after this. Then, their third offensive play resulted in a fumble, as sr. DL Jake Robb did the stripping while sr. DL Jude Coughlin made the recovery. Another LC score here could have really dampened the spirits of the Lions, but the defense forced a three-and-out. Soon after, the Lions would establish some momentum and ultimately carry it for the duration of the contest. On O’Hara’s second series, sr. RB Lamont Veal scored the first of his three long touchdowns. This one came on a 3rd-and-six play when sr. QB Dashawn Darden (3-for-6, 92 yards) perfectly placed a pass into Veal’s hands; allowing the speedster to easily sprint home on a 71-yard strike. Thanks to two tackles for losses (5-yard sack on the latter) by sr. LB Nolan Cummings, the Crusaders ended their next series punting from inside their 5-yard line. Thus, allowing O’Hara to begin their next series at the LC forty. A key 24-yard run by sr. RB/DB J.T. Blyden (UMass) on a 2nd-and-24 chance put the Lions in business at the LC 7-yard line. Then, on the second play of the second quarter, Darden scampered in from eight yards to break the tie. It looked like there was some confusion on who was supposed to get the ball on this play, but when Darden decided to take-off he basically went in untouched. O’Hara would add another score in this quarter. Again, it was Darden on a 1-yard plunge with 3:00 left in the half. This capped a 11-play, 69-yard drive. A 16-yard pass from Darden to star sr. WR/DB Thaddius Smith (Boston College) was instrumental in prolonging the drive. To begin the second half the Lions would score their fourth consecutive touchdown of the day. Again, it was an 11-play march. This one covered 54 yards, as no play went for more than nine yards. Blyden provided the honors with a 9-yard burst. With O’Hara in control, the fourth quarter saw each team exchanged two scores apiece. Sr. RB/LB Phil Seger, who ran hard all day, scored twice (1 & 13 yards) for the Crusaders. Veal provided carbon copy scores for the Lions on counters that covered 41 and 45 yards. On each Smith provided crucial blocks on perimeter, as did sr. OL Kevin Campbell on the second one. All total, the Lions roared to 382 yards of offense. The OL played well throughout and they included: jr. C Nick Fallows, G’s jr. Andrew Gallagher and Cambell,  T’s sr. Alex Constantini and J. Kraiza, and sr. TE Jeffrey Driggins. Blyden had his most productive day of the year with 20 totes for 148 yards. Veal mixed 162 yards of rushing/receiving on just 7 touches. Smith chipped-in with 39 yards rushing on 11 carries. Defensively, Cummings (1.5 sacks; 2 other TFLs) led here with 14 tackles. Blyden (6 solos), Smith (6 solos), and sr. LB Willie Reyes (6 solos) thirded 24 stops. Kraiza notched a sack, while sr. Gallagher split another sack with Cummings. Sr. DT Gabe Cordes made five tackles (2 TFLs). Soph. DB Donovan Pierce hustled for 6 stops, while jr. Darrell Jackson added five. Sr. K/P Steve Weyler (Villanova) belted four kickoffs for touchbacks, albeit with a nice wind at his back. One time after a 5-yard penalty moved the ball closer, he sent one through the uprights. For LC, they once again did a nice job in the running game, as they churned out 287 (324 total offense) yards on the ground. Man, do they have a lot of success running the ball to the short side of the field. Leaders today were; Seger (10-101), sr. Mike Isabella (15072), sr. Mike Iacono (10-59), and soph. Ryan Quigley (14-52). However, the problem with this style is that once you fall behind by multiple scores, like they did today, then it becomes increasingly difficult to play catch-up. Still, I like what I see from the LC staff. They understand the limitations that they have in some areas and play the game to their strengths. Defensively, jr. LB Andrew McClintock was a force with 15 tackles (8 solos). Also active for the Crusaders were; Seger (seven), sr. LB Ryan Gianoni (seven), and jr. DL Chris Sniscak (six). LC ran 62 offensive plays. At halftime, O’Hara honored the ’73 title team during their Homecoming festivities.

OCT. 13
PCL 2A
West Catholic 50, Carroll 21
In terms reaching the end zone doing so eleven times would be a nice number for a high school season. Heck, for some positions it would be very good for a career. But how about one game? Yep, that’s what West sr. RB Greg White accomplished in this one at Widener University. Ok, allow me to explain. White did not score eleven touchdowns, which would have smashed the city record of eight held by Bartram’s Hector Scott in ’83. White ONLY managed five scores; rushes of 5, 9, 13, & 24 yards and a TD reception of 56 yards. However, he did enter the end zone three more times on conversions (two rushes & a reception). Furthermore, he had three scores called back due to penalties. West did not score after any of these wiped-out TDs. The lost scores included a 96-yard kickoff return and rushes of 43 & 62 yards. All total, White accumulated 259 all-purpose yards; 16-158 rush, 3-73 receiving, and 24 yards on a return. Counting the yards lost on the negated touchdowns he covered 390 yards. Phew! In three games versus Carroll (Two from last year), White has amassed 12 touchdowns and a total of 80 points scored. Ok, how about some game highlights? Things couldn’t have started any better for the Patriots. On the game’s third play, West jr. QB Antwain McCollum dropped back quickly and fired a pass on a quick slant. Carroll’s bruising sr. DE/RB Austin Tilghman batted the ball at the line to himself and then proceeded to rumble 46 yards for the score. West would answer on White’s first score to grab a slim 8-7 lead later in the opening quarter. Still, Carroll was playing inspired ball that saw them hold the pigskin for 12 plays and reach the West 6-yard line. Alas, the Burrs held and a 24-yard field goal attempt sailed narrowly wide to the left. After West took over the Patriots got them in a 3-and-14 situation, but McCollum connected with jr. WR/DB Ahkil Crumpton for a 28-yard pick-up. thus, digging them out of a hole and restoring a little order. Then, three plays later McCollum broke away from a heavy Carroll rush and found White all alone behind the defense for his 56-yard score. Later, McCollum hooked-up with sr. WR/DB Patrick Amara for 28 yards. This was a back-breaker with a 1:10 to go in the half and pushed West’s lead to 22-7. Any hope of Carroll keeping it interesting went away on the second play of the second half when freshman LB Marque McDuffy intercepted jr. QB Sean McMorran. He returned the pick 24 yards to the Carroll 17-yard line. Three plays after that White rumbled in from nine. West would score on their next possession (White 13 yards) to push the score to, 34-7. The fourth quarter was on the wild side with each team scoring twice. For Carroll, Tilghman provided a 12-yard scoring run and McMorran tossed a 9-yard TD to sr. WR Joey DiWilliams. West scored on another White rush (24 yards) and a 65-yard kickoff return by jr. DB Romeo Gunt, who fielded an onside kick try on a couple of hops before streaking downfield. For West, McCollum finished 6-for-11 with 171 yards. The Burrs as a team managed 341 yards. Defensively, soph. LB Amir Postley made ten tackles (6 solos; 2 TFLs). Jr. LB Neil Satterwhite contributed seven stops (.5 sack); including 4 total TFLs. Soph. DL Tymir Oliver added eight stops. Gunt (9 tackles) forced a fumble on a sack; recovery by McDuffy. Sr. DE Jalil Branch (7 stops) and soph. DE Andre Mintze split a sack. Sr. DL Anthony Ukaha shared a sack. Jr. DB David Swen notched five tackles (2 pass defends), while Amara and Crumpton (3 pass defends) halved eight tackles. As you can see a lot of underclassmen contributing on this West defense. For Carroll, Tilghman managed 101 yards on 20 carries. The Burrs neutralized the big fella until the late-going, as he picked-up 82 of his yards in the final quarter. Tilghman registered 3,823 yards and 50 TDs in three years of varsity football at St. Andrew’s (DE). Counting his output of 706 yards this season he now owns 4,529 career rushing yards. McMorran ended 8-for-20, for 111 yards. DiWilliams (4-63) was his favorite target. Jr. RB/DB Shawn Springs managed 118 all-purpose yards (93 on kicoffs). Defensively, jr. DB Joey Rodden (.5 sack) was game with 8 tackles. Sr. Michael Lewis shared a sack. Jr. OL/DL Joey DeSanto (6’3”, 260 lbs) had some impressive moments early with three TFLs. Jr. DB Kevin Bier hustled for 5 stops. This game was originally scheduled for Friday night at Conshohocken. Persistent and heavy rain at times prevented use of Conshy’s recently re-sodded field. So, thanks to the good people at Widener for accommodating the teams in such short notice.

OCT. 12
CATHOLIC AAAA
Judge 28, Ryan 17

There has never been much love lost between these two long-time PCL rivals, who reside in the Northeast section of our city. And today was no different in a game played before a good crowd at Charlie Martin Field at NE H.S. At any level of football the turnover battle is often so critical in deciding a game between two evenly matched teams. Scoring points off of these turnovers is even more of an indicator in deciding an outcome. This theory was very much in play today and it was the Crusaders who were the beneficiaries. However, Ryan is the team that had the game’s first two significant plays. First, sr. DB Jason Dones made a nice, sprawling pick in front of a Crusader at his team’s 32-yard line to end Judge’s first possession. This was immediately followed by a lovely 68-yard bomb from sr. QB Mark Ostaszewski to sr. WR/DB Bobby Romano, who was WIDE open streaking down the left hash. Seriously, the closest Judge defender was probably at Lincoln H.S. Looking to build upon their earlier momentum, the Raiders marched into Judge territory again on their next series. Pass completions from Ostaszewski to sr. WR/DB/Handyman Connor Golden covering 20 & 11 yards helped bring the ball to the Judge 25-yard line. Then, on first down, and with oodles of time, Ostaszewski found a player in a wrong colored jersey. Judge’s jr. DB Steve Brooks made the interception at the 15-yard line and had just enough gas to outlast Ryan jr. RB/DB Samir Bullock to paydirt. The play covered 85 yards and really gave the Crusaders a boost. As we entered the second quarter, Judge began their next series at their 33-yard line. Using eight consecutive runs; none going for more than 9 yards, the Crusaders marched to the Ryan 28-yard line. Next, a fly pattern down the left side to sr. RB/DB Marquis Seamon was called. The pass from jr. QB Zach Carroll was slightly under-thrown, causing a flag to come out when contact was made on Seamon, but somehow he still managed the make the catch and fell into the end zone for a 28-yard score. Ryan would answer on their next possession when they traveled 60 yards on 11 plays. Bullock was instrumental on the series; carrying the ball 8 times for 47 yards. An 18-yard pass from Ostaszewski to Romano was also key on the drive. Alas, Ostaszewski got us even with a 1-yard plunge. Moving to the second half the Raiders were able to force a punt on Judge’s first possession. Twice, on their subsequent drive they converted fourth downs on fake punts. First, Romano picked-up 6 yards to keep the drive alive at their 43-yard line. This was definitely a designed fake. The next one I’m not so sure was, as Golden fielded a somewhat high snap and with a rush coming from his right decided to take off. The play picked-up 32 yards and put the Raiders in business at the Judge 25-yard line. After a 12-yard rush by jr. RB Sean O’Donnell, who was inserted for Bullock who had cramped-up, put the ball at the Judge ten. However, two rushes only produced a yard each and a third down pass headed to the flat was batted down by Judge sr. LB Shawn Scornaienchi. In turn, Ryan settled for a 25-yard FG from jr. Joe Stock and grabbed a 17-14 lead with 1:54 left in the third quarter. Judge’s next possession produced a three-and-out and again Ryan appeared to have the necessary momentum. A great, diving, 40-yard catch from Romano put the ball at the Judge 47-yard line. This was followed by a 22-yard scamper by Ostaszewski to the Crusader 25-yard line that ended the third quarter. With Ryan looking to pad their slim lead disaster struck on the second play of the fourth quarter. Judge’s soph. RB/DB Yeedee Thaenrat, who was HUGE in this final quarter, neatly stepped in front of a pass at the nine-yard line. Heading up field only a solid diving tackle by WR Ryan McArdle prevented what would have been a 91-yard return for a touchdown. Still, the return did go for 31 yards and gave Judge decent field position at the forty. What happened next was more than likely the catch of Judge’s season. Facing a 3rd-and-six, Carroll unleashed a pass down the right sidelines in the direction of jr. WR Clayton Rush. Prior to this play, Carroll had only completed two of his previous ten tries for 14 yards. On the play, Rush went over two defenders to bring in the heave for a 40-yard gain to the Ryan sixteen. Just a great catch! Very clutch, too. Thaenrat (3 & 9 yards) and Seamon (3 yards) brought the ball to the one on rushes. From here, Carroll provided the honors on a sneak with 6:58 left. Ryan’s next try went nowhere, as sr. DE Matt Cunningham notched his second of three sacks in the game. Huge! This forced a punt and gave the ball back to Judge at their 28-yard line. Ryan had a full stable of timeouts remaining, so a stop would have given them the ball back with plenty of time for some late-game heroics. However, the Crusaders had other ideas. Using a heavy formation with two tight-ends; the Crusaders moved the chains twice before providing the final nail in the coffin. Facing a 3rd-and-7 from the Ryan forty-two, Thaenrat took a hand-off to the right. An early tackle attempt was shed, then he somehow got down the sidelines with inches; no check that, with centimeters to spare. Just a terrific run to say the least. Instrumental on this series and at other junctures of the game were the boys on the Judge OL. This group included: sr. C Jeff Mills, G’s sr. Tom Bayer, sr. Kevin Lang (6’6”, 275 lbs), and jr. Dan Sipps, T’s sr. Eric Drains (6’3”, 275 lbs) and jr. Tim Breslin (6’3”, 250 lbs), and TE’s Cunningham and sr. Jim Galasso. Sr. FB Joe Nigro also was also vital to the butt-kickin' cause. Good job, boys! Offensively, Thaenrat rushed 21 times for 139 yards; 87 came after the intermission. Seamon added 39 on 10 totes. Carroll found six different receivers and finished 7-for-19, for 105 yards. Defensively, Judge registered six sacks. Cunningham had three (Worth 27 yards of losses), while Drains (8 total stops), Scornaienchi, and jr. DE Jowell Agyedu each posted one. Drains has possibilities and had some impressive moments in this one. Seamon (5 tackles) added an interception on Ryan’s last possession of the game. Nigro, at LB, was active with 7 stops, while Thaenrat (six) and Brooks (five) were in the mix. I really like how this Crusader group is playing and how their transition into a new coaching staff appears to be a smooth one at this time. Kudos to all involved! For Ryan, the Raiders have to feel disappointed after the start they had to the season. Their non-league slate provided a (4-0) start with wins by an average of over 37 points per game. Yes, the competition wasn’t the best, but high hopes were rightfully had for the PCL portion of their season. Unfortunately, the Raiders have been officially eliminated from PCL 4A playoff competition with one league game to play. This league is a bear and unforgiving in many ways. Ryan lost to three teams that on a different day, or with a bounce or two, they could very well have beaten. I’m not sure if the 4A league has ever been this competitive from top to bottom. Bullock finished with 106 yards on 20 carries, but I never got the sense that he ever got in a prime rhythm. Romano was terrific with 146 yards on 4 receptions. Ostaszewski ended 6-for-14, with 177 yards. Defensively, sr. LB Jesse Wireman finished with 11 tackles. Sr. DL Joe Hansbury had some big boy type moments with 9 stops and two pass defends. Sr. DE Sean Boylan (5 stops) had a sack and soph. LB Jason Wagher hustled for 5 stops.

OCT. 5
CATHOLIC AA
West Catholic 44, Conwell-Egan 0

The Burrs made quick work of an undermanned C-E squad by scoring four times in the opening quarter. To begin the game, jr. QB Antwain McCollum found sr. WR/DB Patrick Amara (Pitt) for 39 yards. Four plays later McCollum neatly lofted a pass over an outstretched C-E defender’s arm to jr. WR/DB Ahkil Crumpton for a 25-yard score. After a three-and-out, Amara fielded a punt with a defender bearing down on him, but somehow avoided the tackle attempt before getting down the left sidelines. The return covered 54 yards and gave the Burrs a 14-0 lead. Amara (3-69) scored his second touchdown on a 22-yard pass from McCollum (4-for-8, 94 yards) to cap a 7-play, 80-yard drive on West’s next turn. Rounding out the scoring in the first quarter was freshman RB Calil Wortham on a 7-yard run with 1:06 left in the opening quarter. Wortham got the start for star sr. RB Greg White, who was unavailable this week due to a school issue. The youngster did rather well for himself and his future looks promising. He added another scoring run with :28 seconds left in the opening half. This one covered two yards and gave West a commanding 34-0 lead at the half. All total, he rushed 14 times for 110 yards. He did not carry the ball after the intermission. West would push the game to mercy rule status midway through the third quarter when jr. RB/DB David Swen went 83 yards untouched around the right corner. Defensively, West was too much for a C-E team down to its third quarterback. Freshman Justin Ward got the start, as soph. Mike Alley (leg) and his back-up soph. Jarrett Patman (ankle) continued to nurse injuries. Alley is expected back next week. Meanwhile, C-E’s eight first half possessions featured just a single first down and that came in the final seconds on a defensive holding call. West forced five three-and-outs with punts in the half. They also forced a pair of turnovers; a fumble recovery by Crumpton (Amara forced) and interception for sr. WR/DB Rae’Quan Williams, who returned the pick 34 yards for a score only to have it nullified on a penalty. Prior to Swen’s long TD run, Williams made his second pick of the game at his team’s 2-yard line. Amara later added a pick and returned it 58 yards for a score, but that too was called back because of a illegal block. Jr. LB Neil Satterwhite made six solo stops in the game, including one that led to a safety early in the fourth quarter. Other tackle leaders for the Burrs were; jr. LB Romeo Gunt (seven), soph. DL Tymir Oliver (five), sr. DL Anthony Ukaha (four; two TFLs), sr. LB Sholem Thornton (four), and soph. LB Amir Postley (four). The West defense held C-E to 68 yards on 43 plays. For C-E, their longest play went for just 10 yards; a pass from Ward to jr. WR/DE Jordan Burney. Defensively, soph. DB Vince Dubzak made a fumble recovery. Sacks were notched by Burney (7 tackles) and jr. LB Joe Ruggiero (5 stops). Freshman DB Michael Crawford had some good moments for four solo tackles. Just nine seniors can be found on C-E’s 60-player roster. Twenty-one players are freshmen.

NON-LEAGUE
Lansdale Catholic 36, Neumann-Goretti 13
There are 45 teams that play in the three city leagues and at this moment only two of them can boast a (5-0) record. The Crusaders of Lansdale Catholic are one of them. The other is Episcopal Academy. Archbishop Wood plays tomorrow and they can make it three with a win over O’Hara. Imhotep Charter of the Public League sits at (4-0). Ok, so maybe the overall competition hasn’t been elite so far, but you still have to appreciate the job that Head Coach Tom Kirk and his staff are doing. After all, their five wins have come by an average margin of 29.0 ppg, so it’s not like they are squeaking by teams. The Crusaders aren’t blessed with oodles of speed and size, but they appear to play to their strengths and so far it’s been good enough. Tonight, they received a strong defensive effort from numerous guys. Two of them were sr. DL Jude Coughlin and sr. DE Zach Talley (6’3”, 225 lbs), who were in the Saints’ backfield all night. In fact, their harassing started almost immediately and ultimately led to the game’s first points. On N-G’s second play Coughlin sacked jr. QB Ray Lenhart for a 9-yard loss to the 6-yard line. Then, on the next play, Talley sacked Lenhart and forced a fumble (recovered by jr. DL Andrew McClintock) at the N-G 3-yard line. Two plays after this soph. RB/DB Ryan Quigley burrowed in from the one-yard line. Sr. RB/DB Mike Iacono (11-45) executed the conversion run to make the score, 8-0. Back to Coughlin and Talley, but on the night they each registered a pair of solo sacks and twice teamed up for combos with each other. All total, they managed a eight stops in the N-G backfield. The rangy Talley thrice got his paws on passes near the line of scrimmage. LC’s next possession would produce another score. This time they traveled 47 yards on 7 plays, with sr. RB/DB Mike Isabella providing the score on a nice 15-yard reception from jr. QB/DB Joe Pinzka. As we moved to the second quarter the Saints grabbed some momentum after sr. DB Leroy Haigler cleanly blocked a punt. Then, Lenhart connected with freshman WR Aamir Brown for 23 yards to the LC 20-yard line. Two plays later, sr. RB Sihmare Morgan roared up the middle for the score to make it, 14-6. The Saints would get the ball two more times at this score, but both times were forced to punt on three-and-outs. Then, after a short N-G punt to their 29-yard line, the Crusaders needed just two plays to increase their lead. First, Iacono ripped-off a 18-yard run to the eleven. Then, Isabella (9-62) scored from here. Quigley added a conversion run for a 22-6 lead with 1:20 left in the opening half. As we moved to the second half neither team could establish anything, but Quigley quickly changed that on the first play of the fourth quarter. On a 4th-and-13 chance he intercepted a wobbly pass and after using a nifty cutback very close to the sidelines, zipped downfield for a 74-yard score. Rather impressive! A short time later, sr. RB/DB Phil Seger scored on a 12-yard run to make the score 36-6 with 6:31 left. The Saints would score in the final minute on a 14-yard pass from soph. QB Corbin Williams (4-for-8, 108 yards in two 4th quarter drives) to jr. WR Joseph Richardson. For LC, on offense they managed 234 yards on the ground. Quigley led all rushers with 113 yards on 15 totes. He and Isabella seem to be interchangeable and do some of the same things in a similar manner. LC’s grunts included: sr. C Jack Shields, G’s sr. Max Wengyn and sr. Ian Bates, T’s Coughlin and sr. Nick Albanese, and TE’s Talley and jr. Eddie McKee. Also contributing on defense were sr. LB Ryan Gianoni (forced fumble) with six stops and jr. DL Chris Sniscak with a fumble recovery. Eight different LC defenders had a pass defend. The Crusaders held the Saints to 4 yards on 19 rushes. For N-G, Lenhart finished 10-for-25, with 108 yards. He was under severe pressure throughout. Star sr. WR Jamal Custis had some moments and finished with (4-76). For my money, the Saints have to do their best to force feed him the ball. However, they did target him more often, but the ball just didn’t get there for one reason or another.  Brown (5-55) is a brassy youngster with interesting possibilities. WR/DE Emil Moody (6’4”, 195-lbs) is another impressive looking freshman. He made two grabs for 27 yards. Morgan finished with 39 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, jr. LB Mike DiFrancesco was extremely active with 12 tackles, including 9 solos. I liked his energy. Soph DL Rashid Saunders (6’2”, 240 lbs) had some impressive moments with 7 tackles (sack). Sr. LB Danny Murray recovered a fumble. Jr. DB Jack Taylor (seven) and Richardson (six) were active. One of the most impressive stats in the game was that the N-G’s cheerleading squad had 44 members. Check this goofy occurrence out. Today, I covered two games won by teams with the name Crusaders. Each yielded 13 points. And each gave up 181 passing yards to their opponents. Goofy, right?

NON-LEAGUE
Judge 21. Bonner-Prendie 13
The Crusaders entered the game with a 122-to-0 scoring advantage over its opponents over the last 3 1/2 games. In week one they trailed 30-3 to Episcopal at the half. They went onto to score the final 19 points of that game in a loss. Since then they have won tilts 31-0, 37-0, and 35-0. Today, the scoring advantage swelled to 143-0 after nearly 45 minutes of game action. Another shutout was in their sights until misfortune struck with the second team offense in the game. With the ball at the B-P 12-yard line a snap from center avoided sr. QB Kevin Kovacs, who was in a shotgun formation. The ball was kicked around and eventually corralled by B-P sr. DL Jon Durkin, who proceeded to rumble for a 72-yard TD with 3:13 left. Ok, so points were scored, but it wasn’t on the defense. Alas, this streak would end in the waning seconds, too. B-P held the Crusaders and were able to get the ball back with a little over a minute left. Then, with four seconds left, jr. QB Collin DiGalbo lofted a pass down the far sideline to sr. WR/DB Kyle Dawson, who somehow stayed inbounds and easily trotted in for a 52-yard score. Despite the final few moments, I’d have to think that first-year Head Coach Mike McKay is pleased with how his club is developing. Judge mostly controlled things throughout. After holding the Friars to a three-and-out to start the game, the Crusaders wasted little time finding the end zone. On their second offensive play, jr. QB Zach Carroll hit jr. WR Clayton Rush for 49 yards on a slant to the B-P 18-yard line. Two plays later, impressive soph. RB/DB Yeedee Thaenrat zipped in from here.  Judge would add to their lead in the second quarter with a time-consuming 16-play, 68-yard scoring drive. Again, Thaenrat found the end zone. This time from a yard out. No play on the drive went for more than ten yards. The key play was a 7-yard flip from Carroll to sr. WR Arren Monteleone on a 4th-and-3 chance from the B-P 41-yard line. Carroll was an efficient 5-for-5, for 39 yards during this series. The Friars lost a golden chance to get back into the game right before halftime. DiGalbo found jr. TE Tyler Higgins down the middle of the field for a 17-yard TD with three second left. But to their dismay a holding penalty negated the score and B-P failed on one final attempt from the 30 yard line. Judge’s nail-in-the-coffin score came with 41 seconds left in the third quarter. Again, it was Thaenrat doing the honors. This time from 12 yards. The score was set up by a nice pitch-and-catch from Carroll to sr. TE/LB Jim Galasso for 23 yards. Overall, I thought Carroll (10-of-17, for 136 yards) had a nice outing. He showed a strong arm throughout. A couple of times I thought he put a little too much juice on some throws, or his numbers may have been even better. Still, a lot to build on from this game, as he did a good job of running the offense. Thaenrat finished with 105 yards on 15 carries. Monteleone was active around the line of scrimmage and ended with 5 snags for 34 yards. Defensively, Judge used a disciplined approach and played excellent positional defense. Sacks were had by sr. DE Matt Cunningham (two; forced fumble), sr. LB Joe Nigro (fumble recovery), sr. LB Tim McMonagle, sr. DT Eric Drains (sack, forced fumble) and jr. E Jowell Agyedu. Galasso was active with a game-high 9 tackles. Judge possessed an athletic secondary and they were all active. Thaenrat finished with 7 stops (6 solos), soph. Prince Smith made six solo tackles, and sr. Marquise Seamon had 5 pass defends. For B-P, the offense never got settled in and were less than comfortable for the most part. DiGalbo finished 15-for-28, for 181 yards. Active in the receiving departments were Dawson (4-53), Higgins (4-29), and sr. WR/DB Mike Ockimey (3-52). Sr. RB/DB Joe DePhillipo made three catches for 40 yards and added another 50 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, Ockimey led with 7 tackles (6 solos). Dawson was next with six stops. Others in the mix were sr. DE Anthony Marcus (sack), sr. LB Mike Palmer, sr. LB Mike Shanahan, and soph. LB Tom Becker who all made five stops apiece. Marcus left the game early int he third quarter with either a foot or ankle injury. B-P played without sr. RB Rickey Wilson (leg) and jr. WR/DB Joseph Oquendo (foot). The Friars aren’t a deep squad and the injuries are beginning to pile up. Hopefully, they can overcome these as league season approaches.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE AA
West Catholic 52, McDevitt 14

Heading into this tilt few would have expected a competitive game and the Burrs wasted little time proving that thought to be true. McDevitt fought hard, but just didn’t have the horses or athletes to match the Burrs. West found the end zone five times in the opening quarter. The five scores came in a six-play span. Two more touchdowns were had in the second quarter and by the time the intermission arrived it was, 52-0. The scoring plays were as follows: Sr. RB Greg White (7-132) capped the opening drive with a 10-yard run. Next, jr. QB Antwain McCollum nicely found sr. WR/DB Patrick Amara (had a 69-yard punt return for TD called back) on a 61-yard post. White found paydirt for a second time with a 49-yard sprint. Then, a 8-yard fumble return by jr. Neil Satterwhite placed the ball at the McDevitt one. From here, jr. FB Demond Brunache found the end zone. The final score of the opening quarter came on a 74-yard pass play from McCollum to sr. WR/DB Rae’Quan Williams, who took a pass at the line of scrimmage and found open real estate down the West sidelines. In the second quarter, White scored his third TD of the game on a 47-yard blast. Lastly, soph. RB Keshon Farmer scored on a 3-yard run. All total, West ran 19 plays in the opening half and accumulated 380 yards of offense. The nineteen plays produced 11 first down. McCollum made the most of his three pass attempts, completing all of them for 173 yards. Freshman RB Calil Wortham had a good night with 78 yards on 9 carries. The offense line consisted of jr. C Steven Wyant, sr. T Kameron Cotton, soph. T Tymir Oliver, sr. G Chancellor Linder, and sr. G Khalim Hadas. Defensively, Oliver was active on the DL with 8 first half tackles. Freshman LB Marque McDuffy and soph. LB Amir Postley evenly split ten stops. Jr. DB David Swen displayed ballhawking ability with two picks. Jr. DB Ahkil Crumpton notched a sack. For McDevitt, a couple of feel-good moments were had in the fourth quarter. Soph. RB/DB Vincent DiLeo (18-64) got the Lancers on the board with a hard 6-yard TD run. This score was set-up by a 24-yard pass from sr. QB Gary Meakim to sr. WR Anthony Gordon. Later, the Meakim-to-Gordan connection struck again. This time for 18 yards. This helped to set up a Meakim to frosh. WR Max Bryson 23-yard touchdown. Jr. K/P Brendan Hanagan belted a pair of extra points, had a touchback on a kickoff, and managed solid hang-time on a few punts. Defensively, sr. Aaron Mitchell and sr. DL John Waldinger each made four stops. Sr. DL Dominic Stanton and Gordan each made four. In the 2001 season McDevitt shut out the Burrs twice; 26-0 & 35-0. But since that time the Burrs have defeated the Lancers 17 straight times. Their average margin of victory has been 30.5 points per game.

NON-LEAGUE
Wood 54, West Catholic 6
So, how many of you expected an outcome of these proportions? I’d have to venture very few. Sure, Wood was definitely considered the stronger team heading in, but both have been two of the premier programs in the city for roughly a decade. Both entered this contest at (3-0). Furthermore, even Wood’s 2011 monster squad only bested the Burrs that season, 28-0. While I’m still trying to figure out when the mercy rule started in the PCL; older files suggest the ’04 season. If true, this would be the first time EVER West suffered a loss of that magnitude. The 48-point margin is their worst defeat since ending the ’01 season with a Thanksgiving Day thrashing  to Penn Wood, 47-0. Wood’s dominance began pretty much right from the opening kickoff. Soph. RB Pat McCann started the game with a nice 39-yard return to the Wood 48-yard line. Two plays later speedy jr. RB/DB Jarrett McClenton dashed 35 yards. On the next play, sr. FB/LB Josh Messina easily trotted in from the eighteen. Just a 1:33 had elapsed off the clock. On the ensuing kickoff disaster struck for the Burrs when a cross-field, short kick found open space and Wood recovered the ball at the West 26-yard line. After an incomplete pass, McClenton ripped-off an easy-as-pie touchdown run. We weren’t two minutes in and the Burrs were already down 14-0. A three-and-out forced a West punt on their next series. Then, on Wood’s first play McClenton zipped 57 yards to payturf. Even though 8:01 was left on the first quarter clock, this baby was over. Just a resounding statement made by a really good group of Vikings. McClenton’s (3-118) night would be over after this. Not bad for three carries, right? Also, thru four games McClenton is averaging 18.1 yards per carry and 7 of his 22 carries this season have gone for scores. Wood’s line was terrific! I know, it’s expected by now. What a combination of talent and technique/coaching. From my vantage point they were simply flawless. Starting members included: jr. C Ryan Neher (6’3”, 248 lbs), jr. T’s Dan Coyle (6’1”, 235) and Ryan Bates (6’5”, 285 lbs) and G’s sr. Deion Oliver (6’6”, 288 lbs) and jr. Jack Kenny (6’1, 200 lbs), with jr’s Tom Cardozo (6’1”, 225 lbs) and Shawn Scroger (6’2”, 260) as rotating members. Yep, that’s six of the seven being in the junior class. Kind of scary. Another junior, Christian Lohin (6’3”, 225 lbs) also did some quality paving from his tight end position. All total, Wood rolled to 372 yards (332 on ground) on 39 plays. Twelve different Vikings carried the ball in the game. Sr. FB/LB Tyrone Dean added a 30-yard rumble to make it 28-0 with 22 seconds left in the opening quarter. Sr. RB/DB Luke Spahits (6-54) notched a 3-yard scoring run. Soph. RB Ryan Barrett (3 yards) and McCann (4 yards) also added scoring runs. Soph. Mack Schwartz (6’4”, 200 lbs) rushed thrice for 85 yards, including a 68-yard burst to set-up a score. Defensively, sr. DE Chris Gary scooped up a fumble and trotted home from the twenty. Messina notched two sacks. Jr. DE Hunter Smith made a fumble recovery. Jr. LB Jake Cooper made four stops early and soph. LB Pat Carroll made four late. For West, not much went well. Sr. RB Greg White (8-82) provided the lone score with a 75-yard TD run midway thru the running clock. It came against Wood back-ups. Jr. QB Antwain McCollum was 6-for-10, for 37 yards. Defensively, sr. DB Patrick Amara and jr. DB Ahkil Crumpton registered sacks. Jr. DB David Swen was a bright spot with 7 tackles, including two that temporarily saved scores. A light rain started in the second quarter and got progressively worse as the game moved along. Not fun! Nor, was the drive home from Warminster in a downpour. Upon arriving home I had the chance to catch the end of the Arizona St.-Stanford game. Former West WR Jaelen Strong ’10 plays for ASU. It was good to see Jaelen have a very good game, albeit in defeat. He finished with 12 catches for 164 yards and a score. Good job and continued success, Jaelen.

West Catholic 30, Bonner-Prendie 17
Almost a year ago to the day Burrs and Friars hooked-up in a wacky one that saw the Friars race to a commanding 24-0 halftime lead, only to have the Burrs score an unfathomable 42 unanswered points to win going away. In this one the swing never reached those proportions, but the Burrs did use a quick second half surge to erase a slim halftime deficit. Late in the second quarter, B-P’s jr. DB Joseph Oquendo made an interception to set-up the Friars deep in West territory. West would keep the Friars out of the end zone, but sr. K Adam Robinson converted a 25-yard field goal to give his team a slim 9-8 lead at the intermission. To start the second half,  a West drive stalled and B-P looked to build upon their recent momentum. They held the ball for 14 plays while traveling from their 17-yard line to the WC nine, but third and fourth down passes by jr. QB Collin DiGalbo were batted away by West jr. DB David Swen and sr. DB/WR Patrick Amara (Pitt). From here, the Burrs would seize control. Over the next 6:16 of game action they would find the end zone thrice to build a commanding, 30-9, lead. First, sr. RB Greg White ripped off an impressive 85-yard jaunt. Then, after jr. LB Neil Satterwhite’s sack/forced fumble (recovery by jr. LB Romeo Gunt), jr. QB Antwain McCollum took a keeper around the right side and went untouched down the B-P sidelines for a 39-yard score. Next, the Burrs used three big plays to travel 93 yards. A 21-yard run by White was sandwiched around McCollum to Amara pass completions of 34 & 43 yards. The latter proved to be a juggling TD catch with two defenders in the area. B-P did draw closer with 4:26 left, when jr. WR Aaron McCastle caught a tipped pass downfield from DiGalbo for a 60-yard score. Further drama would not exist from here, though. The Burrs reached (3-0) for the first time since ’04 when they started (6-0) before losing to Bonner (17-13). West was led by White who totaled 247 yards on 29 carries. He also scored on a 20-yard dash in the second quarter. McCollum shook-off a shaky opening half to make a few key plays in the final twenty-four minutes. He finished with 104 yards passing and 77 on the ground. Amara (3-91) was the leading receiver for West. All total, the offense accumulated 438 yards of offense. The guys in the trenches were: jr. C Steven Wyant, G’s soph. Charles Trabi (6’2”, 340 lbs) and sr. Khalim Hadas (6’4”, 300 lbs), and T’s soph. Tymir Oliver and sr. Kameron Cotton. Soph. FB Andre Mintze did a commendable job as a lead blocker. Defensively, the Burrs received good performances from a number of guys. Satterwhite (sack) led with 10 tackles. Frosh. LB Marque McDuffy, who missed the first two weeks with a dinged shoulder, was active with 8 stops (6 solos). Swen made six solo tackles and five pass defends. Also, his forced fumble (recovery by Amara) on a 29-yard keeper by DiGalbo at the 7-yard line was huge and came with his team trailing, 6-0. Sr. DE Jalil Branch (6 stops) and Gunt each had sacks.  West suffered a blow when promising soph. DB Craig Jones left with a knee injury while fielding a rolling punt in the second quarter. Initial diagnosis was a torn ACL, but a MRI will be taken early this week. I really like this kid’s potential, so hopefully a full recovery is had. Keep your spirits up and hang in there, Craig. For B-P, I appreciated the toughness of DiGalbo. He didn’t have his best completion percentage day, but not all of that was on him. He finished 10-for-30, for 227 yards. He hit sr. WR/DB Mike Ockimey on a lovely 33-yard score to cap the game’s first drive. As the game wore on the Burrs’ pressure increased and he took a lot of hits. Still, he hung in there decently for my money. Jr. TE Tyler Higgins (2-71) was the recipient of a nice 54-yard slant from DiGalbo. Sr. RB’s Ricky Wilson (13-57) and Joe DePhillipo (9-44) did the bulk of the running. Defensively, I liked the activeness of sr. DE Anthony Marcus (6’5”, 240 lbs), who ended with a game high 11 tackles (8 solos). Sr. LB’s Mike Palmer (6’4”, 230 lbs) and Mike Shanahan (two TFLs) evenly split 14 stops. Sr. DB Kyle Dawson (six) and DePhillipo (five) were around the ball often. DePhillipo did suffer a leg injury late in the game. The extent is unknown at this time. The teams each ran sixty plays in the game.

Downingtown East 13, Roman 7
For the second straight week the Cahillites let a strong defensive effort go to waste. Last week  Roman out-gained Malvern 342-to-134 in total offense. However, turnovers hampered them in a 15-13 loss. Today, they won the yardage battle again. It wasn’t by as much, 246-to-170, but once again a couple of breakdowns prevented them from claiming a victory. Roman’s first drive ended with an interception by DE sr. DB Kevin DeFrances, who returned the pick 15 yards to the Cahillite 30-yard line. Seven plays later, on a 4th-and-4 play from the thirteen, DE jr. QB Ryan Rumer nicely floated a fade to imposing soph. WR Cary Angeline (6’8”, 221-lbs) for the game’s first touchdown. Wasting little time, Roman’s talented jr. RB/DB Dimetri Kelly broke a pair of tackles before racing 64 yards to tie the game with 7:15 left in the opening quarter. From here it would be a game of field position with neither side really taking too many chances in trying to score. Then, with 4:40 left in the third quarter, the Cahillites had another breakdown. DE sr. TE Alec Coyle-Nicolas (Harvard) busted through the center of the line and cleanly blocked a punt. The ball rolled into the end zone and Coyle-Nicholas fell on it for an easy score. Roman’s sr. DL Ricky Rivera swatted the PAT afterwards. From here Roman would have three more possessions. They threatened on the one immediately after the go-ahead touchdown when they marched to the DE 21-yard line. However, on 3rd-and-1 Kelly was brought down for a four-yard loss by sr. DL Alec Petrillo (6’4”, 272-lbs). Then, on fourth down Kelly gained nothing when sr. DB Brandon Feamster met him in the backfield. The Cahillites’ next series produced a three-and-out. Lastly, their final possession began at their 21-yard line with 7:23 left. They held it for 12 plays, but really could only nickel and dime their way down the field. Eventually they faced a 3rd-and-1 from the D-E 35-yard line. With Kelly lined up in wildcat formation he was brought down for a three-yard loss by jr. Justin Cohen (INT earlier). On fourth down Roman again went with their workhorse, but sr. DL Sean Snodgrass (6’4”, 288-lbs) yanked him down after only a two-yard gain. With 1:22 left the Cougars ran out the clock by taking three knees. Kelly was featured and then some, as he carried the ball 37 times for 176 hard-earned yards. No doubt that Kelly is a back of franchise proportions, but after awhile the entire DEt defense started to key on him. Mixing it up with a couple of other rushers may have helped in keeping the Cougars’ defense honest. Sr. FB Patrick McCourt only touched the ball three times, but he did get his team a first down on all three touches. His only rush produced 13 yards. Soph. RB Eli Godfrey ran the ball twice in the second half and gained a solid 8 & 6 yards, respectively. Roman started soph. QB Phil DiWilliams, who finished 6-for-15, for 44 yards and 2 picks. It appeared to me that DiWilliams' inexperience kept Head Coach Joe McCourt from really opening up the offense. Better days should come in time. Soph. WR Fred Blow-Tydings was his main target with 3 catches for 22 yards. Defensively, the Cahillites flowed to the ball nicely and displayed good athleticism. Sr. LB Brandon Lopez made six tackles and recovered a fumble that was forced by sr. DL Christian Greene. Jr. DB John Chaney (5 stops) made an interception. Jr. LB Marques Wright had a team-high 7 tackles, while jr. LB Samuel Payne was active with 5 stops and two pass defends. Sr. K/P Phil Issac punted four times for a 39.5 average and also belted a touchback a good six yards deep into the end zone. This was my first time covering a game at Lincoln H.S. since they put in the new turf. Sadly, it’s littered with graffiti. Also, the stands were full of broken glass and trash. Not good!

West Catholic 38, George Washington 17
Since this game started at an uncommon time of 6:30, I thought to myself that maybe I’ll get home at a decent hour. Not to be, folks! This one lasted nearly three hours, as the teams combined for twenty-two penalties worth 216 yards. Additionally, wacky occurrences were not scarce. First, there were a combined 327 yards in returns. Also, the teams totaled eight turnovers between them (WC forced five). The Burrs’ defense registered eight sacks that amassed 69 yards in losses. Phew! So, when did the Burrs seize control? Trailing, 14-8, early in the second quarter, soph. DE/OL Tymir Oliver (6’4”, 245 lbs) sacked and forced a fumble on GW’s sr, QB Cedric Wright. Jr. DB Romeo Gunt’s recovery put West in business at the Eagles’ 30-yard line. Five plays after this, frosh. RB Calil Wortham scampered in from thirteen yards out. This would be the start of twenty-two consecutive points for West between the second and third quarters. Touchdown runs by sr. RB/DB Greg White, who was a force in the second half, covered 4 and 26 yards to give the Burrs a comfortable 30-14 lead. GW’s soph. K Chris Schlegel belted a 35-yard field goal to draw the Eagles a little closer at, 30-17. Soon after, the Eagles came real close to making it even a closer game. Sr. WR/DB Hasan Brockman snatched an interception about three yards in the end zone. He raced out and down field with plenty of open real estate in front him. However, Oliver showed great hustle to impede his path, and in turn this allowed White to make a great tackle and strip from behind. West’ s sr. OL Kameron Cotton made the recovery to give the Burrs a new possession. The return did total 64 yards. Later in the fourth quarter the Eagles had another opportunity to draw closer. They were facing a 3rd-and-19 from the West 21-yard line, when soph. LB Amir Postley neatly stepped in front of pass and returned it 61 yards to the GW 29-yard line. Five plays later, jr. QB Antwain McCollum found sr. WR/DB Rae’Quan Williams for a six-yard score and the icing on the cake. West only ran 35 plays in the game and found themselves on the short end of the stick in that stat (30-to-14) in the opening half. White (13-124 rush) finished with 251 (222 yards in 2nd half) all-purpose yards. He made four catches for 38 yards and returned two kicks for 25 & 64 yards. He also accounted for three of the four West 2-point conversions. McCollum ended 9-for-14, for 93 yards. After GW grabbed a quick 7-0 lead to start the game, West’s soph. WR/DB Craig Jones answered with a 75-yard touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. Defensively, Jones and sr. WR/DB Patrick Amara (Pitt) also had picks. Sacks (8 total) were had by jr. LB David Swen (two; 8 total stops), jr. LB Neil Satterwhite (5 tackles), sr. OLB Jalil Branch (2.5), soph. DE Andre Mintze, and Oliver (1.5; 6 tackles). Postley was impressive with a game-high 9 stops (5 solos). Romeo showed good energy with five tackles. Because of the sacks, GW managed just 7 yards on 28 rushes. For GW, Wright, a transfer from Germantown's now-extinct program, returned after an ankle injury that kept him out of camp and last week’s first contest. He flashed at times, but often had multiple Burrs collapsing near him. He ended the game 14-for-25, for 158 yards. Early on sr. WR Rasheed Black (4-69; 24-yard TD) was his main target, but Black sat out most of the second half with an injury. The speedy Brockman had some quality moments throughout. He made 5 grabs for 66 yards and finished with 214 all-purpose yards. GW’s first score came on a 10-yard run by jr. RB Bruce Smalley. Defensively, jr. Davik Miller made a pick and jr. DL Eugene Stephane recovered a fumble. Jr. DB Tavios Morgan and soph. LB George Hubbard evenly split ten tackles.

LaSalle 34, North Penn 7
The Explorers have won the last five PCL 4A championships (6 of the last 7 counting a PCL Red title in ’06) and have reached at least the state semifinals in the last four years. They won a state title in ’09 and were runner-ups ’10. So, success is nothing new to them. Reloading has become commonplace and at this point one could think it’s expected. Still, they were hit reasonably hard by graduation a year ago. They returned only one offensive starter and three on defense, so new faces are in abundance for Drew Gordon’s club. Well, it’s only one game, but if the Explorers didn’t pass their first test with flying colors, then they came pretty darn close. North Penn is a huge school and typically a District 1 power. Sure, they could be down a little this year, but such a convincing win isn’t anything to look down at. La Salle was methodical early and then downright business-like later on. They outgained the Knights 415-to-165 and doubled them 22-to-11 in first downs. Seventy-six of NP’s yards came on their lone touchdown drive at the end of the third quarter and into the fourth. As most football fans in this area know long-time Eagles’ coach Andy Reid was let go at the end of last season. This led to a coaching search that eventually brought Oregon’s Chip Kelly to the Eagles. In turn, Kelly tabbed Pat Shurmur as his offensive coordinator. Where is all this leading? Well, Shurmer has a son, jr. QB Kyle Shurmur, who opted for LaSalle with his family moving to the area. Even though the younger Shurmur had never started a game at St. Edward’s, an Ohio power, all indications have been that he is a keeper. Tonight was our first look. Personally, I liked what I saw. A good sized kid at 6’4”, 215-lbs, who did well maneuvering around the pocket to help buy additional time. All total, he finished 16-of-25 for 181 yards, including two scores to jr. WR/DB Jimmy Herron (5 yards) and jr. RB Jordan Meachum (8 yards). La Salle’s staff always does a good job with their quarterbacks, so there is not reason not to think that many good days lie ahead for this kid. La Salle also got another transfer QB this offseason in soph. 6’3”, 190-lbs Chris Ferguson (Upper Dublin)). They are high on this youngster as well. He closed out the scoring with a 12-yard TD to soph. WR Charles Headen. It was his only attempt of the game. La Salle’s other two scores came on runs from Meachum (4 yards) and soph. RB Jared Walls (17 yards). Meachum rushed 19 times for 107 yards in the game. He runs hard and low to the ground. Walls added 31 yards on 5 totes, while another soph. RB Nick Rinella (5-72) also impressed. Shurmur’s top targets were sr. WR Levi Hardy (5-86) and Herron (5-32). La Salle’s grunts included soph. C Matt McDermott, G’s sr. David Geppert (6’3”, 260-lbs) and sr. Bill Frusco, and T’s jr. Adam Kerrigan and sr. Vince Cicalese. Sr. FB Nick Buckley blocked well all evening. Defensively, jr. WR/DB AJ Greseszak snatched a pick. Sacks were had by sr. LB Zaire Franklin (Syracuse), sr. DE Ryan Coonahan, and jr. LB Brian Buckley. Sr. LB Ryan Brady and sr. DB Tamar Turner were active all night and evenly split 14 stops. Franklin added six. Next week, the Explorers take on 2A power Imhotep Charter in what should be an early-season test for both squads. There will be a lot of people around these parts looking to see how this one ends up. The game is scheduled for Saturday night at 6 o’clock at the Northwest Super Site (former home to Germantown's program).

Upper Darby 28, Bonner-Prendie 27 (OT)

For drama purposes we’ll head right to the extra session to start things off. The Royals had the first chance and wasted little time, as sr. QB/DB/P/K Chris Rossiter took a direct snap out of the shotgun and blasted up the middle for the 10-yard score. Next, his PAT gave them a 7-point advantage. When the Friars took over they used the legs of their jr. QB Collin DiGalbo, as he rumbled six, three, and then one for the score. B-P’s K Adam Robinson was successful on all three of his PAT attempts in the game to this point, but Head Coach Greg “Bubba” Bernhardt opted to go for the 2-point try and win. After a timeout to discuss things he again tried to use DiGalbo’s legs on a quarterback-draw. No dice! Upper Darby engulfed it practically from the snap. Elation came from the Royals’ sideline, who had lost three straight in the series, while the Friars walked away extremely disappointed. I didn’t mind the call by Bernhardt. His team was on fumes and had been that way for a large part of the second half after a rather efficient opening twenty-four minutes. Still, the Friars only had a 21-14 lead at the intermission, despite running 40 plays (296 yards) to Upper Darby’s nineteen. How so? Well, they did score on three of their first four possessions; sr. RB/DB Joe DePhillipo (TD runs of 1 & 8 yards) and a 1-yard toss from DiGalbo to jr. TE Tyler Higgins. However, the one time they didn’t score they had 1st-and-goal at the ten-yard, but were eventually denied. Then, at the end of the half they drove as far as the Upper Darby 17-yard line only to run out of time. Meanwhile, Upper Darby had two huge, not to mention exciting plays for their scores. The first one came on it’s first offensive play, and after B-P had grabbed a 7-0 lead. Sr. WR Justin Vendetti took a speed sweep, sprinted to his right, stopped, and hurled a perfect pass to a WIDE open sr. WR Deandre Pendergrass for a 72-yard score. Man, this was well conceived. The next kick to the gut for the Friars came after a play that I have never witnessed before. On a kickoff, following B-P’s third touchdown, an Upper Darby up-man caught a short pooch kick. He immediately headed right, then back to the left, before dropping the ball, then picking it up before heading back to the right again, and then to the left. Tired yet? When the dust had settled he was brought down at his own 8-yard line. Yep, minus-33 on the return. Only in the Central? Phew. Alas, two plays later Rossiter heaved a gorgeous bomb that hit the speedy Pendergrass in stride and it was turn-out-the-lights time. He was gone! 95-yards to make the score 21-14. More of the same, as in frustration for the Friars, as we moved to the second half. They just couldn’t put the game away. Two more drives entered Upper Darby territory, but both came up empty. You could just sense that the momentum was changing and Upper Darby was looking like the team with more in the tank, especially Rossiter. He would tie the game on a 43-yard jaunt with 6:41 left. The Friars would have two more cracks after this, but couldn’t muster anything close to a threat. B-P’s 25 second half plays only managed 81 yards. Fatigue and some dinged individuals were definitely part of the problem. DiGalbo, who has dropped about 20 lbs since last year, is much more mobile than people would think. No, he’s not going to outrun many, but he can be effective in short-yardage and catch-off-guard situations. Tonight, he was running a lot, as many of his pass attempts were on rollouts. He finished 11-for-25, for 171 yards, and added 47 yards on the ground on 15 carries. DePhillipo accumulated 100 of his 126 yards in the opening half (17 carries). Defensively, sacks were notched by DE Anthony Marcus and DePhillipo. Sr. LB Kyle Dawson led with 8 tackles. Sr. LB Mike Palmer and sr. DT Seamus Meekes evenly split ten tackles. Meekes is the brother-in-law of my good buddy Matt “Cauls” McCauley. Cauls was also on the trail to snap some photos. For Upper Darby, Rossiter (19-140 Rush) finished with 272 yards rushing/passing. Also, he added three tackles and a pass defend on defense, while handling all kicking chores. The kid didn’t come off the field and was warrior-like. Man, I’d have to think he’ll sleep good tonight. Pendergrass (4-184) is a blur. Also, I appreciated the grit of sr. LB Larry Mills (11 tackles). It’s 1:56 AM as I finish this (Yep, I stole this kind of update from Ted) and I’m back on the trail with West Catholic at Haverford School at 11:30 in the morning. Don’t worry about me oversleeping, though. Jack, my two-year old, will have me up at 8 ish. I hope it’s that late!

PUBLIC 3A
Bartram 6, West Philly 0

It’s not too often anymore that I get to check out some good ol' Public League action, but today’s heavy schedule provided me with a rare opportunity. So, it was off to the old neighborhood (sort of) and Bartram Field at 58th & Elmwood. I actually grew up on 65th street, between Elmwood and Buist, but you get my drift.  Ok, as you can see by the final score, the offensive fireworks were not exactly plentiful. Still, the kids played hard and with spirit, and really that’s all any of us can ask, right? For more than two-and-a-half quarters this one was all Bartram. They ran 41 of the game’s first 54 plays. But.....They could only muster the one touchdown. That came with 29 seconds left in the first quarter on a 1-yard keeper by sr. QB Braheem Edwards. The score followed an excellent, acrobatic 24-yard grab by jr. WR Gary Johnson between two defenders. The Braves faced a 4th-and-15 on that play, too. The drive was actually set-up on a forced fumble by sr. DT Stanton Coleman and recovery by sr. DE Davon Key at the Speedboys 20-yard line. As we moved along, I kept waiting for the Braves to cement things with that second score, but it never came. Meanwhile, the Speedboys eventually started to gather themselves and three times in the fourth quarter crossed into Bartram territory. Their best opportunity came midway the quarter. They had a first-and-goal from the Bartram 10-yard line after a bruising 15-yard run by sr. RB Tahir Jennings. Ultimately, they came a long yard short on fourth down, when a run by sr. RB/DT Brian Davis, his first carry of the day, only netted four yards when needing five for elation. Soph. DB Ta-Shawn Stringfield and Johnson combined to make the stop. Soon after, the Speedboys would get another golden chance with 2:51 left. Sr. WR Stephen Pressley returned a punt 15 yards to the Bartram 35-yard line. But after a procedure call on WP, sr. DB Devon Brunson made an athletic, leaping interception inside the five. From here additional anxiety for Bartram was avoided, and they secured a solid week one win. For Bartram, sr. RB Dawon McGriff (21-69) did some nice early running and added four tackles on defense. Sr. LB Decosta Green had two TFLs, including a sack. Sr. OL/LB/P Sanassi Kane didn’t have to punt until his team’s last two possessions, but did a good job with a pair that went 35 yards each. Soph. LB Hanson Teah recovered a pooch kickoff to start the game. It actually was only pooched about six yards, then methodically rolled the necessary ten yards. With no West Philly player making an attempt for the ball, Teah said I don’t mind if I do. The Speedboys were led by Jennings on offense. He finished with 32 yards on three snags near the line of scrimmage. Jr. QB Donte Trayuham passed for 52 yards and rushed for another 30. Defensively, sr. DE Tymir Harris (sack) and Davis evenly split fourteen tackles. Soph. DB Mitchell Hudgins (six), Pressley (five), sr. LB Darryl Jacobs (five), and sr. LB Khristan Baldwin (five) were all active in the tackling department. I had some added duties in this one. Well, really just one. On West Philly’s critical fourth quarter possession Head Coach Frank Steed was insisting to the referees that it was only third down, even though the box read fourth. So, the referees brought me to the middle of the field to show him the play chart. Frank was good about it and quickly remembered the play he missed. That’s what I’m here for, guys. Smile!
