Joe
Phelan is a senior at Monsignor Bonner. Ever since his youth, he has
wanted to write for a newspaper or magazine, but for now he'll settle for
this wacky website. Joe played basketball for the Friars and is now giving
tennis a whirl. We thank Joe for
his interest, and contributions. |
JUNE 6
PIAA CLASS AAAA FIRST ROUND
Council Rock South 8, Monsignor Bonner 3
(At Ashburn Field)
All good things come to an end. This certainly was the case today for
the Friars as they are ousted by the Golden Hawks in the 1st round of the PIAA
4A Championships. Unfortunately I had to exit the game early, the top of the 5th
inning with 1 out to be exact. At that juncture of the game, Bonner was down
6-0. P Matt Dolan’s day was done after 4 innings. But it could have had
all been avoided. With the score 1-0 in favor of Council Rock South, Matt Dolan
faced LF Shane Price with the bases loaded and two outs. On a full count,
Price swung but the ball appeared to hit him. Normally this would result in a
strike out, which would have ended the inning and prevented the Golden Hawks
from scoring any runs. But the umpire claimed that the ball hit Price’s bat.
Dolan swears it hit Price. As a result of the controversial call, Dolan walked
Price, which made way for Brian Connolly, the 9 hitter, to rocket a ball
to the fence for a bases clearing triple. Dolan was able to get out SS Bill
Fleming to end the inning, but the damage was done as Council Rock South led
5-0. On the mound was Bret DeStefano. He allowed 3 base runners through 4
innings: Joe Haley, who singled but then was thrown out as he tried to
steal 2nd in the 2nd; Dan Dougherty, who reached first with a hit in the
3rd; and Paul Shepherd, who singled in the 4th. Bonner, however, did
score 3 runs in the 5th. Jim Haley hit a huge 2 run triple that
highlighted that inning. In the end, Bonner just didn’t have enough as they
failed to mount a comeback in the last two frames. Despite losing 14 seniors,
Bonner captured their second straight PCL championship appearance and District
XII Title. I didn’t want this to be my last report. But like I said, all good
things come to an end. First off, I want to thank Ted Silary for giving
me this wonderful opportunity to write for this outstanding website. The
experience and exposure I received this year has been remarkable, and I will use
it to my benefit in the future. Second off, to the Bonner Football and Baseball
Players, the reason I am so willing to write these reports is because of your
abilities on the fields and the passion you show for your sports. The constant
praise and appreciation from you guys means the world to me. I will be attending
St. Bonaventure University next fall as I set forth on the journey of being a
journalist. Matt Dolan has always been one of my avid fans. He told me last year
during 5th lunch that I should write for tedsilary.com next baseball season. I
took him up on that, and I am so glad I did. It has been one heck of year for
Bonner sports, and I am beyond thrilled to have been apart of it. Sorry for the
weakness of the report, I had to go somewhere special.
Player of the Year: Matt Dolan
What more can you ask from a kid than what Matt did for this team.
His 8-2 record and sub 1.00 ERA are off the charts. He will be extremely
successful throughout college because he is a hard worker, a dedicated teammate
and a student of the game. He plays baseball for the love of the game, and it
shows because you can tell that he is having so much fun playing our national
pastime.
Player of the game has to be Bill Fleming, who is going to West
Virginia next year. He batted 3-4, and scored the 1st run of the game for the
Golden Hawks.
Extras:
Ryan Wellman, a so-called fan, never attended a game this entire
baseball season. As a student at Monsignor Bonner I am completely embarrassed by
Ryan’s detrimental actions.
Monsignor Bonner graduates on Friday, June 10th. I am proud to say that
my cousin, Kevin Proska, is the salutatorian of our class as the number 2
ranked senior. Chris Louge, a former St. Denis Bulldawg, is ranked number
1 in our class and will be the valedictorian. This is a great honor for these
two men and I wish them the best of luck as they embark on their respective
futures.
JUNE 3
CLASS AAAA CITY TITLE
Monsignor Bonner 7, Frankford 2
(At Ashburn Field)
For the second straight year, the Bonner Friars won the City Title
for Class 4A. After a rocky start, Marty McKeone settled down for the
Friars and went the distance. With no outs in the top of the 1st, Dan
Dougherty made the defensive play of the game with a key double play on
Kevin Montero's line drive to 2nd. The starting pitcher for the Pioneers,
Brandon Gonzalez, hit a double that brought home Augusto Ortega. But
Marty limited Frankford's threat when he ousted Israel Diaz to end away
half of the 1st. Jamie Juisti tied the game up for the Friars after a fly
pop that wasn't caught by C Eduardo Sanchez. Joe Haley was called
out on the play due to the infield fly rule. Joe Haley's at bat came with the
bases loaded and 1 out. Ron Scull, who went 0-4 on the day, struck out to
end the 1st. Marty McKeone allowed three base runners from the 2nd through the
7th inning. One was a walk, another a single, and the third on an error. Bonner,
however, had quite a few base runners throughout the rest of the ball game. With
2 outs and no one on in the 2nd, Dan Dougherty came through with a single, and
was brought home with a triple from Jamie Juisti. It seemed like deja vu at FDR
with Juisti's triple. He hit one against Prep at the same field nearly a month
ago. Jamie Juisti has a terrific blend of speed and power, and really has been a
top player for the Friars all year. He has probably been the most consistent
Friar, other than Matt Dolan, for the season. Bonner scored 2 runs in the
home half of the 3rd thanks to Joe Haley's triple and Jim Murphy's
perfectly placed bunt. Bonner erupted for 4 runs in the 6th to give Bonner 7
runs on the afternoon. Jim Haley had a 2 run single and Joey Fuller
had a big pinch hit RBI single. Next up for the Friars will be Council Rock
South on Monday at Ashburn Field at 4:15. Matt Dolan will pitch for the Friars
as they try to advance in the 4A State playoffs.
Player of the Game: Jamie Juisti
He could have gotten this four or five times this season, but this
performance was well deserving of player of the game nod. He went 3 for 4 with
that huge RBI triple. He informed me pre game that he broke his glove in warm
up, for the 2nd time this season, not sure whose glove he used for the game, but
it worked out well.
Extras:
Jack Liberatore continues his perfect batting average of 1.000
for the season. He walked today after subbing in for Rich Young at 1st.
Jack's brother, Alex, was a first team All-Catholic at 1st base last
season.
Jess Summers, a member of the tremendous field hockey program at
Prendie, attended today's game, along with a number of Bonner and Prendie
students. Jess goes to pretty much every game and is an avid fan of the green
and white.
I nearly predicted the final for this game. On the bus ride over, I sat
with our trainer, Ellis. I told her that Bonner would win 6-2. Thought I
would share my brilliance with everyone.
MAY 31
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
Neumann-Goretti 3, Monsignor Bonner 1
In a pitching duel, Joey Gorman outlasted Matt Dolan as
the Saints won the Catholic League title, preventing Bonner from a repeat. With
arguably the two best pitchers in the PCL, coming into this game one would
expect a low scoring affair. And that was the case after 7 innings with the
score tied at 1 apiece. Maybe Dolan was left out a little too long. But after
John Snyder led the 8th inning with a double off the Blue Monster in left, I
just got the sense of… discomfort. I don’t know I just didn’t have a good
feeling. What ensued would be as expected, intentionally walking Mike Zolk,
leaving Joey Gorman with two on and no outs. Now two strikes came by, and two
attempted bunts were unsuccessful, so why would someone bunt with 2 strikes?
Well Gorman laid down a beautiful bunt that advanced both runners. He, however,
was gunned at first. But nevertheless, he got his job done. This made way for SS
Marty Venafro who singled in Snyder, and Jimmy Kerrigan, who singled in
Zolk, to give Neumann-Goretti the commanding 3-1 lead. This marked the end of
Matt Dolan’s day as he gave up 7 hits, walked 2 batters, and struck out 4 in 7.1
innings. Kevin Giffin, a fairly seldom used lefty, struck out both batters he
faced to prevent any further damage. Rich Young, Paul Shepherd, and
Joe Haley went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th, giving Neumann the
victory. Bonner’s lone run came in the 1st inning. After Jamie Juisti
walked, Jim Haley stretched a single into a double. Paul Shepherd hit a
RBI groundout to bring in Juisti. That my friends, was the highlight of Bonner’s
day on offense, Gorman was just too tough. Bonner had chances, the 3rd and 4th
inning both saw lead off men get on base but fail to produce anything. As the
game grew on Gorman’s arm just got stronger as he retired 13 of the last 14
Friars. The only hit came from Jamie Juisti, a single in the 7th. Gorman
finished the day with 4 strike outs, 3 walks, and 8 strong innings of pitching.
Joe Glennon had a RBI single for Neumann in the 2nd inning. Notables for
Neumann were Marty Venafro who went 2-4 with 2 singles, John Snyder went
1-3 with a double, and Jimmy Kerrigan went 2-4 with 2 singles. Notables for
Bonner were Jamie Juisti who went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and a walk, Ron Scull
who went 1-3 with a single, and Paul Shepherd who used his monster arm to gun
down 3 Saints who tried to steal.
Player of the Game: Joey Gorman
His sac bunt was gigantic and very gutsy. If it wasn’t for his arm,
Neumann wouldn’t have won this game.
Extras:
For the past couple games, and for most of the season I have sat with
Mrs. Tarpey, mother of Bonner Senior Kevin. She is by the far the
nicest woman I have ever met, and she always says nice things about my work. I
appreciate everything she does.
Mrs. Andrea Dolan again makes my report due to her hard work and
dedication with regards to attending Bonner baseball games. She teaches my 7th
period Law/Psychology class which consists of 11 kids. It is by far the smallest
class she has ever had, and she admits, it is her favorite. Members include:
Rich Young, Kevin Tarpey, Matt Dolan, All-Catholic Golfer Matt Lewis, Ryan
Monaghan, Zach Dyer, Luke Cannon, Brian Clinton, Andrew Dougherty, and Alex
Macavoy.
Some special congratulations to: Mike Proska, my little cousin,
being named Honorable Mention All-Catholic for Boy’s Tennis in the Catholic
League. Thomas Boyle, a former Bonner Friar, was named 1st team
All-Catholic.
MAY 28
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINAL
Bonner 5, Wood 4 (11 inn.)
Unbelievable.
Everything about Bonner's come from behind victory was without a doubt
spectacular. This baseball game had everything: drama, trick plays, clutch
hitting, ejections, and extra innings. With a 4-2 contest in the bottom of 7th,
Jim Haley led off the inning with a walk. His cousin, 1B Rich Young,
killed a ball for a double, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Paul Shepherd
flied out, bringing up Joe Haley. Sean McCloskey, who pitched 6
remarkable innings, was taken out of the game in favor of Larry Brittingham.
Now C Paul Shepherd flied out to give Wood its first out of the inning, and put
them 2 outs closer to the PCL Championship. Joe Haley, however, wouldn't be
denied in closing Wood's gap to 1 after he hit a single that brought home his
little brother, Jim. Brittingham stuck out Jim Murphy and Wood was simply
out away from securing the victory with Ron Scull up to bat. To be frank,
Ron has been struggling as of late. He was 0-2 at this juncture of the ball game
(Jr. Jack Liberatore pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the 6th, Jack
singled) but Ron came in the clutch with a single into left field, and the
moment Ron hit the ball, you knew that their would be a play at the plate. With
Rich Young running, Joey Monaghan, who quarterbacks Wood's football team,
threw to C John Santospago, and when Young slide he was ruled safe. But
Brittingham didn't agree with the call one bit as he yelled some curse word that
resulted in him being tossed. As Ted mentioned in his report, both teams were
warned at least once that there was no need for cursing or arguing. With the
score tied 4-4, lefty Rich Rosenbaum entered the game for the Vikings. He
walked Kevin Tarpey to load the bases for the Friars. The game could end
with a swing from Captain Dan Dougherty, but he bunts. And the bunt goes
3 feet as Santospago easily tags out Joe Haley, the runner at 3rd, to end the
inning. Ron Scull who replaced Joe Haley with 1 out in the 7th, remained on the
mound for the Friars as they entered extras. And he made an absolute web gem
when Rosenbaum bunted the ball with a man on and no outs in the top of the 8th.
Scull dove head first to catch the ball and then throw to 1st to get Monaghan,
who walked to start the inning. The lefty Rosenbaum pitched really well in
extras. He gave up 2 hits through the 8th, 9th, and 10th innings, both singles
to Jamie Juisti, he did, however, run into some trouble in the 11th, but
before I go into that, let me take you through some Wood's offensive sequences.
The play of the game had to be what Bonner calls Miami. In the top of the 9th,
Wood had two outs, and two on when Ron Scull faked a throw to 2nd base, but
Bonner made it seem that Scull's throw went into centerfield since Brett
McCrossen tried to go to 3rd. Scull ran him down and tagged him to end
Wood's threat. I had a feeling that the game would end with Jim Haley leading
off in the 11th. Jim walked, Rich walked, and Paul Shepherd, who isn't exactly
known for his wheels, bunted for a single, the Friars had the bases loaded with
no outs for Joe Haley. Joe Haley struck out but that made way for a walkoff HBP
when Jim Murphy took a curveball right at the knee. It was such an anticlimactic
way to end this thrilling ball game. On the bus ride home, Paul Shepherd kept on
saying it was a Bonner way of winning. Not the prettiest or flashiest but just
getting the job done. With the win Bonner advances to their 2nd consecutive
Catholic League Championship! Ron Scull, who pitched 4.2 innings, had 5
strikeouts and the two best plays defensively I have seen all season. For
Bonner, Jamie Juisti batted 2-5, with 2 singles and 1 walk , Rich Young batted
2-4, with 1 double, 1 single, and 2 walks. Wood scored their four runs courtesy
of Joey Monaghan's ground out RBI, Rich Rosenbaum RBI single, and Jeff
Courter's 2 RBI double all runs came off of Bonner's starter, Marty
McKeone.
Player of the
Game: Ron Scull
Aside from tying the game up with his bat in the 7th, Scull pitched one
of his better outings of the year. He also had two of the most incredible
baseball plays I have ever seen in person.
Extras:
I would love to give props to Bonner educator Ms. Andrea Dolan,
who attended the entire 3 hour and 40 minute game. It just goes to show how
dedicated Bonner teachers are and how much they love us kids.
Tommy Crumlish, a Bonner sophomore, scored a run for Bonner today,
him and newly elected Bonner president, Brian Dempsey, did a lot of
curtsey running for the Friars.
I had the privilege of sitting next to my former basketball coach, Tom
Meakim, during the game. He always raves about my writing and I appreciate
the kind words.
Special congratulations to Terry Jacob of the Bonner lacrosse team
in being named 1st team All-Catholic. Terry will be taking his talents to
California as a member of the Whittier Poets.
MAY 25
CATHOLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINAL
Monsignor Bonner 10, Father Judge 0 (6 inn.)
Oh what a glorious day at Monsignor Bonner for a baseball game. The
tarp was out on the softball field for a slip n' slide extravaganza, the grill
produced many hot dogs and burgers for fans to enjoy, and P Matt Dolan
was in complete control of the Crusaders. Over six innings, Matt Dolan allowed
one hit. He also enjoyed the comfortable cushion of an early 3-0 Bonner lead
thanks to Joe Haley's 2 run single in the first inning. Many of Bonner's
runs came on Judge errors. To be honest, some were difficult to determine as
hits or errors. Joe Haley's was one of those difficult to determine. I gave him
a hit for that particular play. Haley's single brought in his little brother,
Jim, and his cousin, Rich Young. Joe scored after a wild pitch, a
stolen base, and an error from pitcher CJ Felthaus on a throw to 3rd
base. Bonner remained relatively quiet over the next 4 innings on offense. P CJ
Felthaus really shut them down giving up no hits from the 2nd thru the 5th
inning but in the 5th he ran into bundles of trouble. Before we go into how
Bonner scored 5 runs in the 5th, let's go into more detail of Dolan's afternoon.
The only hit he allowed came in the top of the 4th when Mike O'Hanlon hit
a single. Dolan forced 5 ground outs, 7 fly outs, and 4 strike outs through 6
innings. Paul Shepherd's arm helped Dolan out as well as he threw out
Cory Kreamer, who walked in the 2nd inning, to end the inning for Judge.
This was just an absolute stellar outing from Dolan. He just kept on dealing and
had no signs of slowing down. Dan Dougherty, the Bonner senior leader and
second baseman, was unable to play for the Friars. (He did pitch hit later in
the ball game for Frankie Saviski) His reason for not playing was a
sickness. With Jim Haley fully healthy, which was evident on some excellent
fielding and a bomb to left field, Jim Murphy moved from 3rd to 2nd to
replace Dougherty, Haley stayed at his natural position as a shortstop and
Frankie Saviski moved to 3rd. Not sure what will happen for Saturday, but we
shall soon find out. Now the bottom of the 5th Felthaus was still in the game
for the Crusaders. Saviski and Tarpey led the inning off with singles, and then
Jamie Jusiti brought in Saviski thanks to a Judge error. Jim Haley hit a
single which gave Bonner the 5-0 advantage. After surrendering a hit to Rich
Young which gave Bonner another run, Felthaus' day was done. Into the game for
Judge was Rob Walmsley, a junior righty. Paul Shepherd added two runs
with a single of his own to extend Bonner's lead to 8-0. The game ended with 2
outs in the 6th inning when Jim Haley hit a beauty to left field that brought
home Dan Dougherty (pitched hit for Saviski) and Kevin Tarpey (walked). The hit
would have most likely been a home run but the 2 runs made it 10-0 and a Friars
victory.
Player of the Game : Matt Dolan
This was a no-brainer for me. His dominance has been on display for
the entire season, and today might have been the best performance of his career.
Here is a kid who just loves baseball and loves his teammates. We have had
countless of conversations about baseball and he just wants to win for his
teammates.
Extras:
Ms. Dolan made another appearance to a Bonner baseball game. Ms.
Dolan as in the Bonner teacher, although Matt's mom, Theresa Dolan, was
in attendance as well.
Brian Clinton ran a tight shift over on the softball field as he
had the responsibility of controlling a couple dozen eager boys and girls who
decided to test the slip n' slide. Hats off to him, and Joey McGinn and
Clay McDermott who helped with the barbecue. It was one of the best
cookouts we have had all year, and the crowd was electric for the last home game
of the season.
Now my CYO volleyball team has constantly been asking me for a little
shoutout in one of my reports. I told them, if we get to the championship, I
will. Well here we are, on the verge of the championships. Tomorrow, May 26th,
St. Dorothy's, led by Jake Callahan, Kristen Mulholland, and Mike Hess,
will compete in the High School CYO volleyball championships at St. Francis.
Congratulations to P Matt Dolan who has been named Player of the Year in
Delaware County as named by the Daily Times. It is in unbelievable honor
for him, and we Bonner kids are extremely proud.
MAY 12
CATHOLIC RED
Bonner 8, Judge 6
For the second straight year, the Bonner Friars win the regular
season Red Division outright as they beat the Father Judge Crusaders 8-6
Thursday afternoon. The win improves Bonner's record to 10-2 in league play.
This looked like a gimme after the first inning when the Friars scored 3 runs
before they even had one out. P Kurt Sowa hit Paul Shepherd with
the bases loaded in the 1st inning to give Bonner its first run. The next
batter, OF Joe "Hype" Haley, hit a single which brought home Dan
Dougherty and Rich Young. But with the bases loaded (Shep, Haley, and
Murphy) Sowa struck out Ron Scull, and then forced Frankie Saviski
and Kevin Tarpey into flyouts to end the threat. Matt Dolan was on
the mound for the Friars, and honestly his stuff was good, not great. He struck
out Mike O'Hanlon to start his game, but gave a hit to Kevin Elmer,
who stole a base and scored on Kurt Sowa's single. After striking out Tim
Ross to end the first inning, in which Dolan threw 20 pitches, Bonner led
3-1. Bonner looked like it would win with ease, especially after a 4 run 3rd
inning to extended their lead to 7-1. In the inning Frankie Saviski had an RBI
double, Kevin Tarpey had a 2 RBI single, and Jamie Juisti scored the 7th run in
with an RBI single. With a 7-1 lead, and the ace on the mound for the Friars,
they would steamroll, right? Wrong. In the home half of the 4th, Kurt Sowa hit a
single but was out at 2nd after Shane Malone grounded into a fielder's
choice. What transpired was a string of 5 consecutive singles and a balk which
gave Judge 5 runs. P Matt Dolan had only one out and a runner on first base when
he threw his 72nd pitch of the day, and that would be his final pitch as Kevin
Elmer grounded into a double play to end the inning. Bonner was able to stop the
bleeding, barely, as they nearly saw their 6 run lead vanish. After Kurt Sowa's
rocky start, he finally was able to settle and retired 8 straight batters before
Dan Dougherty ripped a single with one out during the top of the 6th. After
stealing two bases, he scored the final run of the game on a sac fly from Paul
Shepherd. Ron Scull, who subbed in for Dolan after the 4th, pitched a 3 inning
save as the Friars won 8-6.
Player of the Game: Frankie Saviski
If you read my extras, I explain my reasoning for not writing a
report for Tuesday's game, so for my player of the game, I will do a player of
the series. Frankie turned 16 today and what a great present to be named as
player of the game. Frankie had 2 RBI's on Tuesday, with no hits, he also turned
three double plays in the past two games. Today he went 1-4 with the lone RBI
double. Even though he only has 1 hit in his past 8 at bats, he continues to be
a solid contributor on defense and driving people in at critical times. He has
been a victim of a few errors over the past couple of games, however, he still
gets the nod as my player of the game.
Extras:
Now Tuesday, Bonner defeated Judge 10-4. I was at the game with all
hopes of writing a recap, but I made a few mistakes with my scorecard and I have
been extremely busy as of late that I wasn't able to correct my mistakes in time
for Thursday. But I will give credit where credit is due. Marty McKeone
earned the win, as Paul Shepherd 2 for 2 with 2 RBI singles. Ron Scull added an
RBI triple and two runs, the RBI triple scored Jim Murphy, who had two singles
and another run scored.
A familiar face returned to the Bonner baseball team today in SS Jim
Haley. That is the player who Frankie has been replacing for the past two
weeks, and trust me, they are gigantic shoes to fill. Jim "The Prodigy" Haley is
a highly skilled sophomore who injured his back a couple of weeks ago. He
returned Thursday for the first time and grounded into a fielder's choice in his
only at bat, a pinch hit situation for Kevin Tarpey.
Ms. Dolan, a Bonner educator and a non relative of P Matt Dolan,
was in attendance today. She teaches Law/Psychology to seniors and is beloved by
every student at Bonner. Every day is Ms. Dolan's birthday at Bonner, so I would
personally like to wish her a happy birthday.
Brian Clinton continues his fairly impressive streak of being
mentioned in my report, this shoutout is given only since he so kindly gave me a
ride home from the Judge game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Prendie JV team, led by Nicole "Soup" Campbell, defeated
Archbishop Wood the other day, so hats off to them. Also, the Bonner Lacrosse
team, under the senior leadership of Terry "Stimpy" Jacob and Dan
Lutes, beat Conwell-Egan on Wednesday. Helmets off to them.
MAY 5
CATHOLIC RED
Bonner 4, SJ Prep 2
I wasn't even supposed to attend this game. With the rain on
Wednesday, this game was moved till Thursday at 3:45. But the problem was, I had
a tennis match, one of my last, at 3:30 vs Penncrest. So I had absolutely no
intention on covering this game. Fortunately, though, my tennis match was
cancelled, literally at the last minute, and I was able to gather up a copybook
and pen compliments of my locker just before Matt Dolan's first pitch. In
my last report on Bonner's thrilling 8 to 3 victory over Prep, I mentioned
Mike Connolly. Well, he was there once again and he was sitting with a
certain Philadelphia sports celebrity in Marty Mornhinweg. I had the
truly outstanding pleasure of meeting Mr. Mornhinweg and actually held a
conversation with him. It was surely a wonderful experience. Anyway, a baseball
game took place, and boy was it a good one. Now let's say the home plate umpire
was generous. His strike zone was consistent, I'll give him that, but normal
balls were called strikes and this affected both teams, especially Prep. Matt
Dolan, who has been absolutely magnificent this season, started the game off
with three straight strikeouts, and in those three strikeouts he threw no balls.
That is pretty impressive for a kid who claims to not be a strikeout pitcher,
another impressive fact about those three strikeouts was that neither Kyle
Gillen, Jawan McAllister, or Ray Toto swung at the third strike.
Dolan had 4 strikes out in the first 5 batters, but had only 1 the rest of the
game. But Matt didn't need to strike out many batters considering he allowed 6
hits the entire game. Bonner scored 2 runs in the 1st inning but it was not
easy. Dan Dougherty led the game off with a walk, and then Jamie
Juisti tried to bunt Doc over, but when the ball hit off the bat it went
directly into his eye. He was seriously injured and couldn't return to the ball
game. Filling in for Juisti was Paul-Mike Rementer, who usually serves
the Friars as a pinch runner, struck out, but Doc advanced to 2nd on a wild
pitch. 1B Rich Young got on base thanks to a Prep fielding miscue, and
then Paul Shepherd hit Dan Dougherty home with a sac fly. Joe Haley
hit a towering shot to left field but since Bonner doesn't have a fence it was a
playable ball and as a result Joe was safe at third with a RBI that brought home
his cousin, Rich Young. Bonner caught a break in the top 2nd when Shane
Williams led off the inning with a triple. After a wild pitch, he made an
attempt to steal home but was denied when Paul Shepherd made the throw to Matt
Dolan who was covering home. James Stewart pitched pretty solid ball
after the 1st inning, he allowed 2 singles, one to Ron Scull, the other
to Kevin Tarpey, in the 2nd inning, but he was able to get out of the
inning. The Prep tied the game up during the 4th inning. Kyle Gillen hit the
ball to deep left center field, but it could not be caught by Paul-Mike Rementer.
Kyle advanced to second on the error, and then Jawan McAllister bunted for a
single which brought up Ray Toto, a George Mason signee, who launched a
beautiful hit to deep centerfield which reached the hill. Both McAllister and
Gillen scored, and Toto ended with a stand-up double. After Shane Williams
grounded into a fielders choice, Joe Liciadello grounded into an inning
ending 54-3 double play. With the game tied at 2, Monsignor Bonner took over in
the home half of the 5th inning. Paul-Mike drew a walk, Rich Young then doubled
to bring up C Paul Shepherd who had the hit of the day with the 2 run single
that gave Bonner the lead for good. The Prep went down in order in the 6th, and
in the 7th they had a base runner on 2nd when Skyler Mornhinweg hit a
double with 2 outs, but Matt Dolan continued his dominate performance with a
game ending strike out of Sean Connolly. Kevin Tarpey went 2-3 with 2 singles,
Rich Young went 1-2 with a double, and Paul Shepherd had 2 hits with 3 RBI's.
Also Rich Young and Frankie Saviski made some great defensive plays
throughout the ball game. With Jim Haley still out with a bad back, Frankie
continues to excel on offense, and in particular on defense. For Prep, Skyler
Mornhinweg was the only player with more than 1 hit as he went 2 for 3 with a
single and that 7th inning double. Bonner improves to 8-2 in Catholic League Red
division, they take on the Father Judge Crusaders in a home and home series next
Tuesday and Thursday.
Player of the Game: Paul Shepherd
His single in the 5th propelled the Friars to victory. He continues
to excel both behind the plate and at the plate. As the only returning starter
from last year's PCL and District Title team, Paul remains an extremely vital
member of this team, where he goes, Bonner goes.
Extras: Now on the other field adjacent to the baseball field, a
softball game was taking place between the Prendie Pandas and the O'Hara Lions.
For the record, Prendie won, but throughout the baseball game, I would glance
over to the softball game to see how they were doing. At one point, I looked
over to the softball game and I saw the defensive play of the day from the
Panda's centerfielder Nicole Shields as she made like Willie with an over
the shoulder grab. It was pretty impressive stuff, especially when I found out
the girl was only a freshman.
Brian Clinton and the Grill Master, Joe McGinn, pleased
fans with the grilling of dogs and burgers.
Mrs. Dolan, mother of Matt, takes photos of each game and she sent
me a handful of pictures that she said I could use for my report.
Last report I mentioned the Connolly Family, but Jane Connolly,
the wife of Mike, was not at that game, she was, however, at this game.
To all mothers out there, especially Suzanne Phelan, have a
blessed mothers day! My mom is the most important woman in my life, and I would
not be where I am today if it was not for her.

Bonner 8, SJ Prep 3
It all seemed lost for the Bonner Friars. After failing to
get one hit in the first five and two-third innings, the Friars looked
absolutely hopeless. Prep's Ryan Winton looked unbeatable as the Hawks
held a 3-0 advantage. But one swing from Bonner's heart and soul, 2B Dan
Dougherty, magically brought the Friars back to life. One swing that
resulted in a slow dribbler that gave the senior an infield single. Dan
Dougherty's single was followed by Rich Young being hit by a pitch, and then a C
Paul Shepherd walk, so with the bases loaded Joe "Hype" Haley
delivered with a two run single. Ron Scull tied the game with a single
of his own, which brought home pinch runner (for catcher Shepherd since there
were two outs) Paul-Mike Rementer. Jamie Juisti came through in the
clutch with a 2-run triple that broke the game wide open. With the score 5-3
Prep just wanted to get out of the inning, but Joey Fuller, a senior
pinch hitter, smoked a ball for a double which brought home Juisti. All of a
sudden Bonner was up, 6-3 in the middle of the 6th. Just thinking back on it,
Prep only needed one more out to get out of the inning, but failed to do so.
Kevin Tarpey and Jim Murphy both grounded out to give Bonner two
quick outs to start the 6th, but what ensued couldn't really be predicted. I
can't really describe how much of an impact Dougherty slow dribbler had for this
entire team, or how it seemed to rattle Winton. Now Marty McKeone was on
the mound for the visiting Friars, and he looked sharp. His first miscue came in
the 2nd inning when he let Mike Borsuk, a junior, crush a ball to the
fence for a double. Borsuk later scored thanks to 3B Sean Connolly's
ground out. Prep got two more runs in the 3rd inning on Shane Williams'
triple which scored pinch runner Jawan McAllister, and Williams later
scored on Skyler Mornhinweg's groundout. Marty earned the win since the
Friars were able to score those six runs in the 5th. Joe Haley, who was playing
DH, pitched the final two innings for the Friars. He allowed one hit, and got a
very nice double play from SS Frankie Saviski. Joe Haley also had an RBI
triple in the 7th inning, and scored a run on Paul-Mike Rementer's single. For
Prep, no player had multiple hits but they did walk five times, and had many
opportunities to convert runs. Bonner just gritted it out on defense and on the
mound. The two teams will meet Wednesday at Monsignor Bonner, and if this game
is any indication of how these teams will play then I suggest you make an
appearance Wednesday.
Player of the Game : Joe Haley
I personally told Joe after the game that he was player of the game,
and he said "Joe, thank you." I think he deserves it more than anyone, even
though Juisti could have easily been awarded player of the game with his
gigantic triple. But Joe gets it, in large part, because of his two outstanding
innings on the mound, and his 3 RBI effort.
Extras:
Got to love the three dedicated Bonner seniors who made the trip to
FDR park to watch their classmates play. Brian Clinton, Brendon Garrison,
and John "Wildman" O'Neill made the little journey. Kudos to them.
Joey Cunningham is the Friars manager and he does a heck of job
with regard to keeping the book, filling up the water coolers, and being of any
service for the Bonner baseball team. I also want to thank him for his effort on
informing me of both lineups before each game.
I want to thank Coach DeBarberie for allowing me to ride on the
bus with the team. It was very nice gesture.
Wednesday promises to bring a cookout and a slip n' slide. Joe McGinn
and Brian Clinton (his goal is to be mentioned in every single report) will be
hosting.
I had the privilege of speaking with Ryan Connolly, whose brother
is Prep's 3rd baseman, Sean, after the game. Ryan just completed his
freshman year at Pittsburgh, and managed the Prep's basketball team throughout
his high school career. Ryan and Sean's dad is Mike Connolly, who is a
friend of my family, and has always been a passionate high school sports fan.
What a great guy he is.
Jack Liberatore hit a grand slam and a two run home run for the
Friars JV team in a win over Carroll on Friday.

CATHOLIC RED
Bonner 10, Roman Catholic 1
Even the rain couldn't contain the Friars as they avenged yesterday's
loss with a 10-1 win over Roman Catholic. Despite giving up a run in the 1st
inning, Matt Dolan was excellent for the Friars. I had him it at only two
strikeouts, but he forced ground out after ground out. The run Dolan gave up was
a wild pitch that brought home Matt Stoffere. But that was it for Roman.
On the hill for the Cahillites was Colin Cooke, and he started the game
off with three straight outs but he ran into many problems in the 2nd inning as
the Friars batted around, scoring 5 runs. The big hit was Joe Haley's 2
run double to left field. With Jim Murphy up to bat, he and Kevin
Tarpey teamed up for the best play of the day overall, as Murphy and Tarpey
perfected the suicide squeeze. The bunt laid down by Murphy was perfect and it
really gave Bonner all the momentum. Quick story: the clouds were dark and all
signs called for a thunderstorm. After a light drizzle in the top of the 1st
inning, the rain came down extremely hard for maybe an inning or two.
Fortunately, the Roman Catholic school bus was parked directly behind
centerfield, which is where a handful of spectators, including myself, were
standing. The friendly bus driver -- regrettably, I didn't get his name --
allowed us to sit in the bus until the rain settled down. It was an extremely
nice gesture by the kind man. One of the spectators was Mr. Tim Vanderslice,
father of Friars 1st baseman/Pitcher Pat Vanderslice. Mr. Vanderslice
coached me in basketball at Lansdowne Boys Club and he claims to be an avid fan
of my writing. I thank Mr. Vanderslice for his continuous support. Anyway,
Bonner got a run in the 4th and 5th, and 3 in the 6th. Jamie Juisti and
Jim Murphy combined for three RBI, as the only extra base hit for the Friars was
Jr. Joe Haley's double. Joe's little brother, Jim, was out for his second
straight game with an injury. All hope is that he will return next week for a
crucial match up vs. St. Joseph Prep Hawks. His replacement, another sophomore
in Frankie Saviski, continues to wow Bonner fans with his play. After
going 1 for 3 with an RBI against Roman on Tuesday, he went 1-2 with a walk and
a few fine defensive plays on Wednesday. Richard Young, whom I mistakenly
failed to mention in my first two reports, had an excellent game at first. He
singled, scored a run, and had a sac fly on the day. For Roman, Stoffere had two
singles, Brandon Irwin singled, and Paolo Gambaro also singled as
Matthew Dolan allowed no extra base hits. The win gives Bonner a 6-2 Catholic
League record, and the loss makes Roman 2-6 on the year. The next Catholic
League contest for Roman isn’t until May 10, when they take on La Salle, former
home of Daily News bigwig Pat McLoone.
Player of the Game: Matthew Dolan
What more can I say about this hard working kid from Ridley. His arm
isn't powerful but his stuff is just filthy. His ability to draw ground out
after ground out is incredible. Also the conditions he faced were difficult, and
for him to withstand the rain and wind, was truly outstanding.
Extras: Jack Liberatore, a left-handed seldom used junior,
provided a pinch hit single. After Jack achieved the hit, a group of girls
hollered "Yeah Jack!” with much excitement. I never knew Jack was such the
ladies man.
I was standing next to a Prendie junior who turned 17 today. And one of
the things she really wished for her birthday was for her boyfriend, Bonner
righty Matt Hudash, to pitch. She got her wish in the 7th inning as Matt
retired Roman in order, including a strike out.
Brian Clinton promises the return of the Slip n' slide for next
week's St. Joseph's Prep game. So bring some towels and perhaps a bathing suit.

Bonner 3, O'Hara 1
It was extremely hot out on this Wednesday afternoon. One would
assume the balls would fly off the bats but that wasn't the case in this highly
unentertaining baseball game. Not really sure were to begin with this one. The
Friars secured the victory but like I said earlier, it wasn't all that enjoyable
to watch. Bonner managed TWO hits the entire afternoon. One was an RBI double
off the bat of Ron Scull in the first inning, and the other didn't come
into the 6th inning when Sr. RF Kevin Tarpey singled up the middle.
O'Hara, on the other hand, had runners constantly in scoring position but failed
to contribute any runs other than the first inning RBI by P Jeff O'Reilly.
Matt Dolan pitched for Bonner, and the first two times he faced 2B
Mike Schneider, he must have thrown close to 25 pitches. The first Schneider
bat resulted in a hit by pitcher, and the next, a strikeout, one of six
strikeouts on the day for Dolan. There really didn't seem like there was a flow
to the game just a lot of sloppiness throughout the game -- four hit batters,
multiple walks, a couple errors. But one thing is for sure, this Bonner baseball
team knows how to get the job done. They are truly resilient. With the bases
loaded in the top of the 7th inning, Monsignor Bonner needed two outs to achieve
their Catholic League leading 5th win of the season. Matt Dolan, who finished
with 94 pitches, was removed in favor of junior Closer Ron Scull. Ron Scull was
able to strikeout Pete Gbur and Steve Trainor to win the game for
Friars. For O'Hara, O'Reilly pitched a really solid game. I'm pretty sure Jeff
allowed one hit, and it was the RBI Scull had in the 1st. He wasn't dominant
like he was against Roman earlier this month but he was in much control of the
game. The Bonner baseball team will take on Roman Catholic Tuesday April 26th.
Player of the Game: Ron Scull
Not only did he produce the only extra base hit of the game, he also
closed to game to earn the save and give Bonner a victory.
Extras: The Cooking Trio of Brian Clinton, Joseph McGinn, and
Corey Cahill gave Friar spectators the chance to scarf down burgers and
dogs.
Word throughout the Bonner hallways is the return of the legendary slip
'n slide, which made many appearances during last year's Catholic League
Championship run, to the Bonner fields Thursday for the Roman game.

Bonner 9, O'Hara 3
I have been very busy as of late. With my tennis career skyrocketing
this was the first game of the season that I could attend. The weather was a bit
chilly but other than that the conditions were perfect for a spring afternoon CL
baseball game. Coming into the game, both O'Hara and Bonner had a Catholic
League record of 3-1. Although early in the season, this game seemed very
important. Not only because of the storied Bonner-O'Hara rivalry, but also
because the the winner would take over sole possession of first place in CL Red.
On the hill for the Lions was Soph Mark Onimus. Right from the get go
Bonner showed that this was their game to win as Sr. Jamie Juisti
capitalized on an errant pitch and hit a two run home run over the left field
fence. With two outs Sr. Catcher Paul Shepherd hit an RBI single that
brought home SS Jim Haley to give Bonner a 3-0 lead. Sr. P Marty
McKeone walked OF Nick DiMarco in the bottom of the 1st, and then
surrendered a single to Jr. Mike Schneider. But then Marty retired the
next three in order; the key out was to Sr. slugger Jeff O'Reilly, the
clean up hitter in an overall solid line up. Sr. Kevin Tarpey made the
score 4-0 when he stole home on a wild pitch at the top of the 2nd. Kevin Tarpey
is a kid who does all of the little things right, he is a coaches' dream with
his work ethic and his desire to play the game. Not the most talented, but he
uses his intelligence to his advantage. Mark Onimus' day was over by the start
of the fourth, giving up 5 runs in the first three innings, and he was also
responsible for the two men on base when he exited the game. The Friars were
able to score three runs in that 4th inning off of Sr. Andrew Tiefel,
which really broke the gate wide open for the green and white. Jim Haley and
Paul Shepherd each had RBI singles; also included in scoring that inning was an
error committed by an O’Hara outfielder. O'Reilly hit a double and scored a run
in the 5th which was the only run allowed by McKeone. The defensive play of the
game happened in the bottom of the 6th. With O'Hara already scoring two runs off
of Sr. Matt Hudash, they had two on with 1 out when 2B Sr. Dan
Dougherty made an exceptional double play. Dougherty, the ferocious
cornerback for the Friar Football team, demonstrates leadership and toughness
with everything he does. The double play highlight is just one of the many
things Dougherty is able to do for his team. A late sacrifice fly RBI by
Paul-Mike Rementer, who subbed in for Jr. Joe Haley, created the
final score of 9-3. This win makes Bonner 4-1 as they face O'Hara on Wednesday
at 3:45 at Bonner.
Player of the Game: Marty McKeone
Marty didn't have many strikeouts, I had him at two or three, but he
really controlled the game and at one point retired 8 straight batters. Marty
gives Bonner much optimism as their Catholic League season continues.
Extras: The Bonner-O'Hara baseball game at Monsignor Bonner will feature
a barbecue thrown by Joseph McGinn and Brian Clinton. Come out and
watch some quality baseball, while enjoying some dogs. Also Sr. Matthew Dolan
will be on the mound, yet another reason why you have to attend this game.
MARCH 22
SEASON PREVIEW
The 2010 Friars gave fans nothing but happy times during the spring
months last season. The Bonner Friars captured the Philadelphia Catholic League
and District 12 crowns before falling in the first round of the state playoffs.
That team had fourteen seniors, including All-Catholics Rick Reigner, Alex
Liberatore, Joe Nestor, Matt Mullen, Josh VanHorn, and Anthony DiGalbo.
One would expect a drop off this year, losing all of the talent? That is not the
case for these galvanized, deft Bonner Friars. Led by catcher Paul Shepherd,
SP Matt Dolan, leadoff/2B Dan Dougherty, and 1B Rich Young,
this team will strive for another PCL title, and an even deeper run into the
state playoffs.
The team will field many seniors who have patiently been waiting for
their opportunity to flaunt their skills. Aside from Dolan, Shepherd, and
Marty McKeone, this team might lack the varsity experience, but they make up
for that with their defense, and their motivation to be the best. The Friars
have sluggers in Young, Ron Scull, and Shepherd. Speed and hustle can be
found in Jamie Juisti, Dan Dougherty, Jim Murphy and Jim Haley.
The defensive ability of Kevin Tarpey, John Liberatore, and Paul Mike
Rementer will create many highlights and keep the Friars in most ball games.
The pitching, as expected, will make or break this Friars team. Led by staff ace
Matt Dolan, followed by Marty McKeone, Joe Haley (brother to Jim, cousin
of Young), Matt Hudash, Doug Walsh, and Kevin Giffin, this
pitching staff has the potential to take this team the distance. Sure they will
miss DiGalbo’s and Nestor’s arms, and also the departure of Jim Bonner, who now
stars for Upper Darby, but this staff has the makings of being a dominant force.
Overall, I like the Friars' chances on repeating as PCL champions. Aside
from the offensive and defensive, the Friars have the intangibles. They have the
toughness and desire to stave off Neumann, La Salle, Wood, or Prep in pursuit
for that championship. The voyage begins with a home and home series against the
La Salle Explorers on April 5th and April 7th, but before that the Friars will
take part in a preseason tournament in Florida. The Bonner faithful wishes them
the best of luck.
