WHO AM I?
By "The Pulse" -- Pulse2001@aol.com

I am proud and excited to have the opportunity to write for TEDSILARY.com, which is the foremost site for Philadelphia area sports (and the only, which makes this title easy to give out -- smile). I hope that I will be able to entertain/inform all the visitors to TEDSILARY.com with my articles. The format will be somewhat different than what you are used to finding here. Sometimes I will submit informational articles about sports in the city. Other articles will voice my opinion about things that I believe in. Some articles will feature question from the readers about anything sports related that I will post and answer. No matter what, I will try to be entertaining and informative, and always honest.

The 2001 Pulse Awards
I am proud to announce The 2001 Pulse Awards. It has been my pleasure this year covering and commenting on Catholic League Football. Through the course of the year, I received over 60 emails from fans, players, and even a couple ‘off the record’ coaches. It is my opinion that the league is great because of the players, coaches, and fans. So, The Pulse Awards are designed to honor all involved with the site, and with the Catholic League.
You will find the name of the award, the recipient, a description of what the award means (if applicable), and the reason the recipient won the award. Remember that the awards are based on the regular season and do not include or consider playoff results.

2001 Pulse Award for Team of the Year- St. Joe’s Prep. An extremely difficult pre-season schedule only prepared the Hawklets for a dominating regular season where great teams like Bonner, O’Hara, and Judge, didn’t even finish games versus the Prep within a 3 touchdown margin. RUNNER UP- Carroll.

2001 Pulse Award for Player of the Year- Kevin LeSage, Bonner. Player of the year honors the player who was most productive at the position(s) they played, and exemplifies excellence at that position. LeSage’s acrobatic catches and blanket cover ability every week against a great Red Division schedule was something to marvel at. RUNNER UP- Maurice Stovall.

2001 Pulse Award for Most Valuable Player- Kyle Ambrogi, Prep. MVP honors the player whose team had success, and which the team relied on heavily to carry the load. It seems simple that at the beginning of the year, Ambrogi didn’t carry the ball as much and the Prep lost. As the regular season started, he got the ball more, and the Prep won more. It is very hard to imagine if the Prep would have the same success if Ambrogi weren’t on the team. RUNNER UP- Maurice Stovall.

2001 Pulse Award for Coach of the Year- Tommy Coyle, Judge. Using a diet of discipline and attitude, Coach Coyle turned a team that missed the playoffs all together last into a team that could contend for a title this year. Enough said. RUNNER UP- John Quinn, Egan.

2001 Pulse Award for Defense of the Year- Archbishop Carroll. Regardless of strength of schedule, the Carroll defense effectively shutdown an entire league. Teams would go into the Carroll game knowing that the odds were good that they wouldn’t score a touchdown. At least, not against Carroll’s starters. RUNNER UP- St. Joe’s Prep.

2001 Pulse Award for Offense of the Year- St. Joe’s Prep. Racked up a lot of points and a lot of yards while managing to keep the run/pass statistics balanced. Their leading rusher and leading passer both had about 1300 yards of offense. Good two headed attack. RUNNER UP- Cardinal O’Hara.

2001 Pulse Award Surprise Player of the Year- Steve Slaton, Egan. Slaton burst on to the Catholic Scene with a 290 yard effort against Dougherty. Finished the year with more than 800 yards as a freshman. Deceptively quick, Slayton helped lead Egan to its first playoff berth in a while, and gave the Egan fans a reason for attending games. RUNNER UP- Andre Sloan-El, Roman.

2001 Pulse Award for Biggest Surprise Team- Father Judge. See Coach of the Year award. RUNNER UP- Conwell Egan.

2001 Pulse Award for Best Underclassman- Anthony Heygood, O’Hara. With almost impossible shoes to fill, all Heygood managed to do was lead the entire Catholic League in rushing. Oh, did I mention he is only a sophomore. The next Kevin Jones, you say? Nope, he’s the first Anthony Heygood. RUNNER UP- Steve Slaton.

2001 Pulse Award for Great Player on a Bad Team- tie. Mike Piotrowicz, North; Sean Mc Govern, Dougherty. Piotrowicz’s bone jarring hits and quick running ability never failed to impress the Falcon faithful. His football instincts gave the North fans something to cheer about.
Mc Govern’s pinpoint accuracy and good arm strength led to a big year statistically and some good college interest. A great leader, Mc Govern managed a good year when he spent a good deal of time scrambling for his life.

The Pulse Presents the First Annual Ted Silary Writing Acheivment Award to Huck Palmer- Huck’s tireless efforts to provide quality statistics and Vegas Vic-like weekend forecasts should be admired. He should be the second inductee in the TEDSILARY.COM Hall of Fame, behind already enshrined Kevin Hanlon. RUNNER UP- Sparky. (note- Ted was not eligible for this award due to the fact it is in his name, and also to the fact he censors some of my more risqué comments in my submissions…smile).

2001 Pulse Award for Fans of the Year- St. Joe’s Prep. Say what you will about the Prep faithful, but win, lose or draw they enthusiastically show their loyal support. Attending a Prep game is the closest thing to a Suburban 1 league game that the PCL will ever see…lots of rowdy, die-hard fans and a great atmosphere. RUNNER UP- Bonner.

2001 Pulse Award for Most Controversal Team- Archbishop Carroll. The Carroll coaching staff took some shots this year for running up scores, banning players from the site, and having their Athletic Director vote against realignment (the AD is a coach on the staff). These topics were long discussed on the site. RUNNER UP- Prep, because of the recruiting issue.

2001 Pulse Award for Most Controversal Player- Jason Smith, Bonner. Smith’s pre-season smack talking followed by a denial, followed by a statement in which he claimed it was his little brother, followed by his little brother denying it, followed by Smith’s admitting it was him stirred up a lot before the season. RUNNER UP-

2001 Pulse Award for Most Controversial Issue- Realignment. No issue can match the overall controversy regarding realignment. It is, was, and always will be debated. And, it is, was, and always will suck! RUNNER UP- Recruiting.

2001 Pulse Award for Biggest Upset Victory- Wood over Mc Devitt. It seemed that nobody expected Wood to knock off their blue division rival…well, no one except maybe for Wood! RUNNER UP- Egan over Neumann.

2001 Pulse Award for Biggest Coming Out Party, Bonner over Carroll. The term "coming out party" describes an event where a person or thing makes a definitive statement that answers a question. Bonner did exactly this in this early season victory over Carroll. This win screamed, "We are for real. You should have all listened to the Pulse!" RUNNER UP- Judge over O’Hara.

2001 Pulse Award for Best Random Thoughts Submitter- Mc Keever, Prep. Mc Keever made good, rational submissions that most times made sense. He often spoke from the heart and tried to stay unbiased. RUNNER UP- Kevin Hanlon, for the exact opposite reasons.

2001 Pulse Award for Most Up and Coming Program- St. John Neumann. Neumann has a lot of speed, a good amount of size, and a great deal of youth, all lead by a good coach. Experience and maturity will help them get to the next level, maybe over the next few years. RUNNER UP- Father Judge.

2001 Pulse Award for Best Football Name- Joe Winning, La Salle. I can see the banner in the stands now, "Winning isn’t everything, he’s the only thing." Good Player, Great name. RUNNER UP- Matt Mascio, O’Hara.

2001 Pulse Award for Offensive Line Duo who can Eat the Most- "Goose" Nase and "Fat Ringo" Gaynor, Judge. Just take a look at these two cats in the program, or on the site, and you’ll see what I mean. RUNNER UP- Joe Troiano and John Connors, Prep.

2001 Pulse Award for Best Nickname- tie Mike "Tuna" Bucella, O’Hara; Mike "Koz" Kozak. I really don’t know why, but the kid seems to just "look" like a Tuna. He is a big boy, but surprisingly nimble. Kozak’s nickname really stuck with me because there was a sign at the Bonner vs. O’Hara game that said, "Beware of Kozilla." RUNNER UP- Fat Ringo Gaynor, Judge.

2001 Pulse Award for Best Nickname of a Writer- "The Pulse." I picked myself because I felt neglected that I didn’t receive any friggin' awards. Also, my nickname is the only one that isn’t either an animal, an amphibian, a pet name for a dog, or a character in a Mark Twain novel. Think about it. RUNNER UP- None!

Congrats go out to all winners, runners up, and everyone who visits the site!
