Randy's Weekly Honors, '09

Return to TedSilary.com Home Page

Randy Seidman is a constant at Washington games and this year is again giving out college honors to Philly Guys playing college baseball. Very cool!  Randy graduated from Washington, which his two sons also attended. Randy is an award-winning producer of televised sporting events and now works for the Comcast Network, in addition to doing free-lance work for many of the major networks. His career highlight -- producing games, on back-to-back days, when Julius Erving scored his 30,000th point and Mike Schmidt slammed his 500th homer. He may be reached at rseidman9@aol.com.
Check out Randy's awards from 2006 and 2007 and 2008.

2009 Hometown Philly All-Star & All-Rookie Selections
The fourth annual Hometown Philly awards were once again announced in downtown Philadelphia during the 4th of July weekend celebration. There were 167 players on opening day college baseball rosters hailing from three Philly high school leagues: Inter-Academic, Catholic and Public. These student-athletes represented 71 different colleges and universities.
Congrats go out to all of the honorees and their families, their teammates, coaches, managers, trainers, and especially to the seniors. OK - so this is it, the official wrap of season four. We will reconvene in the spring, and it will be under a very strong and recovering economy, where else could you get such insight, huh? So without further adieu, here are the 2009 recipients. As always, thanks to the daddy of tedsilary.com, the man himself, Ted Silary, for always touting the accomplishments of "our guys," and giving others the forum to do the same!

What a week it was for the University of Virginia ... for Phil Gosselin, in particular, and his parents Marianne and David, and siblings Sara and Matt ... for Malvern Prep, in particular, and the Inter-Ac, in general, and how 'bout to the rest of Philly-area high school baseball, as well? Could there ever have been a bigger highlight moment than the one Malvern Prep's Phil Gosselin experienced last week in the NCAA Tournament Regional opener? Yes, it indeed was "The Shot Heard Round the College Baseball World." Not only heard round the baseball world, but seen ... and seen everywhere! Gosselin was one of the top stories that night on all of the highlights shows. There was Phil facing San Diego State phenom Stephen Strasburg, and taking the much-hyped righty way out of the park for a quick 1-0 first-inning lead, a lead Virginia would never relinquish to Tony Gwynn's Aztecs. Phil's blast sailed well over the 380-foot sign in left-center. There was Phil offering sound bites explaining how his team prepped for Strasburg, next week's number one pick in the MLB draft (Washington Nationals). Not only did the Cavs turn up the speed on their pitching machine in practice, they went one step further ... actually, closer.
"We prepared for him all week," Phil said. "We just moved up physically closer to the machine to get some reaction time. We were probably 30, 40 feet away, pretty close. We did a lot of tracking pitches to see velocity and get used to the speed coming in."
Gosselin's timing was perfect as he smacked the first pitch he saw from Strasburg for his sixth homer of the season. Virginia extended the lead to 2-0, pushing across a scratch run in the second inning, but it was pretty much all Strasburg after that. He would exit the game after seven innings, and the Cavs then teed off against the SDSU bullpen for three insurance runs en route to the 5-1 win. The loss was Strasburg's first and only loss of the season.

Virginia, fresh from sweeping the ACC championship, went on to sweep the Irvine Regional, considered the toughest of the 16 four-team sites. Besides UVA and San Diego State, there was UC-Irvine, then-ranked #1, and defending national champion Fresno State. See the Virginia recap below.
------------------------------------------
Three Hometown Philly teams qualified for the 2009 NCAA Men's Division I College World Series. Two of those teams, Marist and Monmouth, lost two straight games in the double-elimination regional. For the third team, the above-mentioned University of Virginia, well let's just say they are on a big-time roll and are quickly becoming a fan and media favorite.
 Marist (31-28, 15-9 MAAC)
Automatic Bid as MAAC Tournament Champions
 Eliminated in Tallahassee Regional
Tallahassee Regional: #1-seed and host Florida State, #2-Georgia, #3-Ohio State, #4-Marist
The Red Foxes were making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005. They faced Florida State in the opener, as sr LHP Josh Rickards (Cardinal O'Hara) got the nod. Through four innings, Florida State led by just 1-0. Rickards had limited the top scoring offense in the ACC to one run on four hits, while striking out five. Marist took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on an unearned run and a two-run homer. In the bottom half of the inning, Josh allowed a single and a walk before notching his sixth strikeout. But he would be lifted at that point, throwing 74 pitches in 4.1 innings, and leading 3-1. Marist coach Dennis Healy was not comfortable with the Seminoles getting their third at bat against Rickards. Note to coach: Next time, stick wit' the Philly guy! Rickards replacement was promptly greeted with a three-run homer, giving FSU a 4-3 lead. Although the Red Foxes would tie the score, granting Rickards a no decision, FSU scalded four relievers with ten runs in 3.2 innings, as they won 16-4. Rickards line: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. At least the coach fessed up in his postgame comments. "Well obviously what I did with the bullpen didn't work," said Healy. "Josh Rickards threw great for us and we had a chance. Our bullpen guys came in and the game got away from us." On Josh's final performance as a collegian, Healy stated, "They were chasing balls in the dirt and when he needed to he made a pitch on the inner half to right handers and knocked some guys off. He does a good job of the running game. He pitched well."
Moving to the loser's bracket, Marist faced Ohio State. The Red Foxes lost 6-4, and were eliminated. Ohio State went on to beat Georgia for the right to play Florida State for the regional championship. FSU won 37-6.

 Eliminated in Oxford Regional
Oxford Regional: #1-seed and host Mississippi, #2-Missouri, #3-Western Kentucky, #4-Monmouth
Ole Miss defeated Monmouth in the opener, 8-1, sending the Hawks to the loser's bracket to face Missouri. Ryan Buch (Conwell-Egan) got the start in the second game, and like Rickards, was effective through the first four innings, trailing 2-0. Ryan had allowed an unearned run in the second, and a run in the fourth. His team would be shut out in this game, collecting six hits. Ryan departed after five innings trailing 5-0, as Ole Miss would register a 9-0 win, and eventually go on to win the regional.

Winner of Irvine Regional, Advance to Super Regional Best-of-3 vs Mississippi
Irvine Regional: #1-seed and host UC Irvine, #2-Virginia, #3-San Diego State, #4-Fresno State
The Cavaliers had to travel out west to play in an extremely competitive regional. But they left California with the regional crown, winning in the minimum number of games possible (3). Coming on the heels of their four-game ACC championship sweep, UVA is riding an 8-game win streak.
“Confidence in the game of baseball is everything because it is completely built around failure," said Cavs head coach Brian O'Connor. "So if you believe in yourself and your team, you have accomplished a big part of the challenge. We are playing our best baseball at the most important time of the year and I think our confidence is at an all time high. What we accomplished in Irvine is something really special that they won’t forget immediately and they won’t forget for the rest of their lives.”
After UVA beat San Diego State and Stephen Strasburg in the opener, they defeated the top-ranked team in the nation at the time, UC Irvine, in a winner's bracket matchup. The Cavs then beat UC Irvine once again, this time for the regional title, and the right to play in this weekend's Super Regional at Ole Miss. Phil Gosselin got the limelight for his "Shot Heard Round the College Baseball World," and was an all-tournament selection. Germantown Academy's John Barr appeared for Virginia in one game of the regional, but I am going out on a limb right now. UVA will advance to the College World Series, partly because of a significant contribution from Barr in one of the upcoming games.
Here is the weekend schedule in Oxford, MS for the best-of-three series:
Friday, June 5 - 2pm (ESPN2) ..... Sat., June 6 - noon (ESPN2) ..... Sun., June 7 - 3pm, if necessary (ESPN)
Two final notes on Virginia: 1) 46-12-1 season record, the fewest losses of any team in Division I, and 2) Gosselin and Barr will have another Hometown Philly player next season in Rob Amaro, an All-Inter Ac selection at Penn Charter. Rob is the son of Dave Amaro, brother of Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, Jr.
Marathon Men
Although no locals played in this game, it stills merits attention in this report. The top seed in the entire tournament belongs to the Texas Longhorns. When they squared off to face the Boston College Eagles last Saturday, little did they know they were about to enter the NCAA Record Book ... and The Twilight Zone. Words are not necessary.

Hometown Philly Tournament Update
through May 27, 2009
With West Chester's elimination in the D-2 World Series, only three Hometown Philly schools are still playing baseball. Virginia, Marist and Monmouth all begin opening round, double elimination action in separate Division I regionals this weekend. UVA, up to #7 in some polls, travel all the way out to the Irvine (CA) regional, where locals Phil Gosselin and John Barr will get a chance to bat against the consensus top pick in the upcoming draft, Stephen Strasburg, from San Diego State. Of course, the Aztecs are coached by Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn, now finishing his seventh season. Here's an awesome stats line - Strasburg's numbers this year: 14 Starts, 2 CG, 13-0, 1.24 ERA, 102 IP, 57 H, 19 BB, 180 K.

Below are recaps of the final four Hometown Philly teams to play college baseball in 2009.
 West Chester (46-12, 21-3 PSAC)
Reached NCAA Division II College World Series
Although the second-ranked Golden Rams participated in just two World Series games (both losses), to be among the final eight teams playing in Cary, NC, was quite an accomplishment. In their opener, West Chester was defeated by Lynn University (FL), 7-3. Monsignor Bonner's Conor Kerins capped an excellent freshman season with a strong effort in this game. Entering the game in relief of ace Bret Moyer in the fourth inning, with his team trailing 6-1, Conor inherited runners at first and second with one out. He escaped the inning without further damage, and went on to toss two more scoreless innings. His final line: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K. However, the potent West Chester offense would not get untracked. In the Golden Rams final tourney appearance, they had the misfortune of going up against the top-ranked team in Division II, UC-San Diego, an upset victim of Dowling (NY) two days earlier. West Chester lost 8-6 to UCSD, ending their season with a school-record 46 wins, and reaching the national finals for the second time in the last four years. Kerins finished with an 8-2 record, second only to Moyer's 10 wins. With three senior starting pitchers graduating (combined 23 wins), Conor is easily the most experienced starter returning in 2010.
 Marist (31-26, 15-9 MAAC)
Automatic Bid as MAAC Tournament Champions
Marist will be heading to their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance, after beating Canisius for the MAAC Championship. The last time the Red Foxes qualified for the tourney was in 2005, when Josh Rickards was an All-Catholic selection for the Southern Division champions, Cardinal O'Hara. Marist will play in the Tallahassee Regional, and square off with host #8 Florida State on Friday at 4 pm (ESPNU). On Saturday, they will go against either #30 Ohio State or #22 Georgia. Look for Josh to get a start this weekend. The Communications-Advertising major was one of eight Marist seniors honored in a special graduation ceremony this week. He and his teammates were busy winning the MAAC title during the actual commencement proceedings.

 Monmouth (32-23, 15-11 NEC)
Automatic Bid as Northeast Conference Champions
Whereas Josh Rickards is making his first NCAA appearance as a senior for Marist, Monmouth's Ryan Buch will be participating in his second tourney, and he is just a junior. That is, a junior who will be eyeing the MLB draft on Tuesday, June 9. Ryan and his Monmouth Hawks are headed to the Oxford Regional, better known as the Ole Miss Regional. The Hawks first game is on Friday night at 8 against the host #12 Mississippi Rebels. The following day, Monmouth will face either Missouri or Western Kentucky, both unranked teams. Buch (7-4, 87 K in 72 IP) will start one of those games. His only appearance in the 2007 tourney was a memorable one. He left the game in the seventh inning with a 4-2 lead against favored Nebraska in the Tempe, AZ regional. The Huskers went on to eliminate the Hawks, 6-5.
Ryan Terry (Conwell-Egan) had a big week at the NEC Championships at New Britain, CT. In three tourney wins, Ryan batted .500 (7-14), with six runs scored and four RBI. The soph third baseman was chosen to the All-Tournament Team.
 Virginia (32-23, 15-11 NEC)
Automatic Bid as Northeast Conference Champions
OK, how did the Cavaliers piss off the NCAA selection committee? I mean, after all, they stormed to the ACC Championship, winning four straight games and defeating three ranked teams (Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State). Was it because they were the lowest seeded team (sixth seed) ever to win the ACC crown? Maybe it was because they mercy ruled the #4 team in the nation, North Carolina. Well, whatever it was, UVA was rewarded by being sent out to the left coast in certainly the tournament's toughest regional. The Cavs will meet wonder boy Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State in the opener. (Hopefully, the junior's career won't be ruined toiling for the Washington Nationals.) Gametime: Friday at 10pm (ESPNU). Virginia will then play either defending champion Fresno State or the top-ranked team in the land, the host Anteaters of UC Irvine. Phil Gosselin (Malvern Prep) started the season off slowly, and tailed a bit at the end, but the middle two-thirds of his season were outrageous, as he was one of the catalysts of a team that has been in the Top 20 for the past three months. The soph IF/OF/DH hit .312, with five homers and a team-best 60 RBI. Soph outfielder John Barr (Germantown Academy) batted over .300 (.307) for the second straight season.

CHEZ ANGELONI
JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY
La SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
HT: 6-3     WT: 190      SR RHP
JENKINTOWN, PA
The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays were hoping to re-create their dramatic run to last season's Division-III championship round. It wasn't to be, although LaSalle High's Chez Angeloni provided postseason thrills once again for the JHU faithful. Chez was tagged with the opening round loss in the NCAA South Regional at Salisbury, MD. That placed his team into the loser's bracket, however Hopkins went on to win their next 3 games, facing elimination in each game. With a chance at playing for the South Regional championship, and a return to the World Series, Angeloni got the starting nod against Christopher Newport, and turned in a complete-game performance in the 12-5 win that put the Blue Jays into the championship game, where they would fall to the same Shenandoah team that defeated them in the opening round. JHU had a 10-2 record in elimination games over the last two seasons.
Chez will forever go down in Johns Hopkins and D-III lore for his performance in the 2008 NCAA Championships, where he was named the Most Outstanding Player. In 2008, he finished with a 9-0 record, highlighted by a complete game win over top-ranked Chapman at the College World Series, and the win against Trinity (CT) in the first game of the national championship. Chez' complete game, 8-strikeout performance turned out to be Trinity's only loss of the season.

for week ending May 17, 2009
CONOR KERINS
WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY (MONSIGNOR BONNER)
HT: 6-0      WT: 190        FR LHP
DREXEL HILL, PA

Is it possible that Bonner's Conor Kerins could be the winning pitcher in the Division II championship this season? In the last two clinching games for West Chester this season, the freshman lefty started and won both games. The opposition each time was Mercyhurst College, as the Golden Rams went on to clinch the PSAC championship and the NCAA D-2 Atlantic Regional championship. Last week in the regionals, Conor pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits while striking out five, to improve his season record to 8-2.
While the Hometown Philly players in Division I are busy in their conference postseason tournaments trying to qualify for the NCAA Regionals, the West Chester Golden Rams are the lone team still playing in the other divisions. With West Chester's 4-game sweep in the Atlantic Regionals held in West Lawn, PA, they have advanced to the D-2 World Series, and will play Lynn University (Boca Raton, FL) in the opening round. Lynn won the South Regional by ousting Florida Southern (Colin Kish, Germantown Academy).

SEAN BARKSDALE
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY (CARDINAL O'HARA)
HT: 6-0     WT: 210      SR OF
GLENOLDEN, PA
It's been a quite a three-year ride for Sean Barksdale wearing the Temple colors. He continues to add to his list of accomplishments, as the season winds down and the Owls chase an Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament berth. By hitting safely in all four games last week (.389 BA, 7-18), Sean extended his batting streak to nine games, a .366 mark during that span. He smashed two more homers and drove in nine RBI, setting the Temple record for career RBI.

  1. Sean Barksdale, 2007-09......................162 RBI
  2. Pete Dempsey, 1976-78 .......................154
  3. John Marzano, 1982-84.......................147
  4. Bobby Higginson, 1989, 91-92 ............138
Also named as Big Five Player of the Week, Sean leads the A-10 with 15 HR and 53 runs scored. Only two Owls have hit more career HR than Sean's total of 27 (Rob Cucinotta-31 and Bobby Higginson-30).

IAN HOFF
OHLONE COLLEGE (FREMONT, CA)
GERMANTOWN ACADEMY
HT: 6-2     WT: 185      SO RHP
HATBORO, PA
Words cannot describe the type of season Germantown Academy's Ian Hoff has had in Northern California, so here are his stats for the regular season:

22 APP, 4 GS, 2 CG, 9-2 RECORD, 1.23 ERA, 3 SAVES, 80. 2 IP, 66 H, 14 R, 11 ER, 6 BB, 57 K

The six walks for a season are ridiculous, but here's one better. In Ohlone's Regional Championship sweep last weekend, Hoff earned the save in game one, then picked up the clinching win in the nightcap. He went 7.2 innings of relief in the 12-inning win, and threw only 61 pitches, 53 for strikes, just 8 out of the zone. Amazing! His Renegades are the top-ranked community college team in Northern California. Ian was an Honorable Mention All-Inter-AC selection in 2007. That GA Patriots team also featured John Barr (Virginia), Colin Kish (Florida Southern), Joe Conaway (Lehigh), Peter Rosa (Guilford) and Billy Vernon (Stanford).
Honorable Mention:
* Ryan Buch,
Monmouth jr RHP (Conwell-Egan) May 9 at Quinnipiac: Win, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 8 K (Fastball has reached 95 mph, could be a 1st or 2nd round draft pick in June)
* Sean Murphy, Keystone jr RHP (North Catholic) May 9 vs Neumann, CSAC Tourney: Win, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 5 K (Opp Season BA: .190)
* Sean Quigley, Neumann U. so RHP (Roman Catholic) Save vs Gwynedd-Mercy sends Neumann to CSAC Final: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 HB

ESTEBAN "SHORTIE" MELETICHE
KEYSTONE COLLEGE (FRANKFORD)
HT: 5-11      WT: 175        FR SS
PHILADELPHIA, PA
The honors continue to roll in for Esteban Meletiche. For the important part he played in Keystone's success this season, "Shortie" was selected as the Colonial States Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and First-Team shortstop. As they had done in the regular season, the Giants are also cleaning up in the postseason. Through games of May 14, Keystone had won 27 straight, to push their season record to an eye-popping 39-4. In just two conference tournament wins last week, Esteban batted .727 (8-11), with 2 HR, 7 RBI, 6 R, 2 doubles. Through May 14, his season average is .454. Great numbers made even better considering that in his first four games of the season, he went 1-for-16. Since that time he has hit an even .500 (68-136).

RYAN BUCH
MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY     (CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 6-3     WT: 195      JR RHP
YARDLEY, PA
Two years ago, then freshman Ryan Buch had a memorable outing against Nebraska in the NCAA Regional with five strikeouts in 6.1 IP. During this season's stretch run, Buch is once again gearing up for a possible postseason run. Last week he improved his season record to 6-3, with a seven inning complete-game performance against Mount Saint Mary's. Ryan allowed 5 hits (4 singles, 1 HR), 1 R, 4 BB, 10 K. Last season the Mount surprised top seeded Monmouth to capture the NEC Tournament Championship. Ryan is now second in the conference with 69 strikeouts, and continues to climb the all-time pitching lists at Monmouth in wins and strikeouts. The junior ranks second with 21 wins (school record: 29), and 3rd with 211 strikeouts (record: 277).

SEAN SAVERIO
WIDENER UNIVERSITY     (LaSALLE HS)
6'0" FRESHMAN CATCHER
HORSHAM, PA
It was an automatic for Widener head coach Steve Carcarey when he filled out his lineup card this season ... Sean Saverio was in the three-hole. In 38 of the Pride's 39 games this season, Saverio was third in the order, usually a place for the team's best hitter - and he's only a freshman, in terms of athletic eligibility. Last week, the LaSalle University transfer helped Widener reach the championship round of the Commonwealth Conference Tournament. Sean batted .491 (9-22) in five games last week (4 tourney games), with 2 HR and 10 RBI. The big blow of the week was a second inning grand slam against Lebanon Valley in the tournament opener. The Pride went on to score seven runs in that inning en route to a 16-2 whooping. Saverio is willing to "wear one for the team." He leads the conference with 14 HBP, with the next closest player being hit nine times! That and his 22 walks contributed to a .491 OBP, third in the conference. Oh by the way, this catcher is 7th in the conference with 12 stolen bases.

The Penn Quakers finished their season with a trio of doubleheaders last week. Junior outfielder Tom Grandieri hit safely in all six games, extending his hitting streak to 9 games. In the six games (two vs Lehigh, four vs Columbia), Tom batted an even .500 (13-26), and scored 13 runs. He scored at least two runs in each game. Of his 13 hits last week, eight went for extra bases (seven doubles, one home run). In the first game of the season-ending doubleheader against Columbia, Tom went 4-4, with three doubles and three runs scored. In the finale, Tom doubled, walked and scored twice as the Quakers posted 13 runs in the bottom of the eighth, as they batted around twice on their way to a 15-9 win. The junior, who also pitched in 12 games, totaled 19 doubles for the season, second highest season total in Penn history. He also led the team with a .357 batting average

JARED FARBMAN
PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY (CENTRAL)
HT: 6-4      WT: 195       SO RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA
As a freshman in 2008, Jared Farbman had a storybook season, going 6-0 with a 2.89 ERA, as he led the Philly U Rams to a regular season conference championship. After starting this season with a win against Georgia College and State (6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 8 K), Jared encountered adversity for the first time in his collegiate career. However, he was able to rebound and turn in four quality starts in his last five mound assignments. Last week at Nyack College, Farbman won a complete-game six-hitter, with eight strikeouts. It was his fifth CG in 18 career starts for the Rams.

JEFF MURTHA
UNIV. OF SCIENCES PHILADELPHIA (LaSALLE HS)
5'9" FRESHMAN OUTFIELDER
WORCESTER, PA
It has been a long and difficult season for the USP Devils, winning just three times in 41 games. Many players could have just packed it in and gone through the motions. However, freshman Jeff Murtha took advantage of getting extended playing time, and is finishing the season on an up note. Last week, in four games, Jeff had 6 hits in 12 at bats (.500 BA), with three runs scored. That may not seem noteworthy, until you consider that in his previous 34 games, he had just five total hits in 54 ABs. With seven freshmen and five sophomores on this year's team, expect an upturn at Pharmacy U. next season.

The West Chester Golden Rams are another area team that is having an outstanding season. With their winning streak currently at 12 games, and a 35-9 record, WCU has moved up to #7 in the Division-II polls, up from #11 a week ago. Freshman lefty Connor Kerins has stepped right into the starting rotation, and is second on the team in wins. Last Friday vs Bloomsburg, Connor notched his sixth win of the season in seven decisions. He went six innings, yielding one earned run on six hits, with no walks and four strikeouts. For the season Connor has a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. West Chester is now 18-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), good enough for first place in the seven-team East division.

Two of a Kind
They played high school baseball together at Germantown Academy. They left the area to attend Middlebury College in Vermont. They are the top two hitters on the Panthers. Although captain Mark Shimrock is a senior and Erich Enns is a junior, their season stat lines are a little too similar, bordering on the bizarre.
  Shimrock   25 GP, 25 GS, .462 BA, 42 H, 23 R,   9 2B, 1 3B
  Enns          25 GP, 25 GS, .429 BA, 42 H, 26 R, 10 2B, 2 3B
Last week in five games, they each hit .450 (9-20) with 3 walks. Both Enns and Shimrock have had 11-game hitting streaks this season. And, oh by the way, what are their astrological signs? Gemini, of course (Sorry, I made the Gemini stuff up, but it sounded good!)
The Name Game, Part II
Last week some unusual player names were presented, here are some rather non-conventional team nicknames:
* Long Beach State: Although 49ers is the official nickname, Dirtbags is the unofficial nickname.

HT: 6-4      WT: 204      SOPH LHP
NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA
Even though Mike Francisco was the losing pitcher in an 11-inning game vs Seton Hall on April 9, Wildcats head coach Joe Godri didn't hesitate to call on his lefty two days later in the series finale. Mike entered the game with Nova holding a 6-4 lead in the 7th inning, with one out and runners at second and third. A strikeout and a pop up ended the threat. He struck out the side in the 8th, and after Villanova increased the lead to 8-4, Mike pitched a scoreless 9th, ending the game with a strikeout, and earning his third save of the season. His line: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K. Mike's Big East ranks: 16 appearances (T-2nd) & 3 saves (T-6th).

HT: 6-1     WT: 185      SO 2B/DH
WEST CHESTER, PA
Although Phil Gosselin started the season 0-for-16, his Virginia Cavaliers were winning, and he continued to work hard. His patience paid off, as he has been on an extended tear since then, and the Cavs are ranked 11th nationally in the latest Division I polls. In 5 games last week, Phil hit .421 (8-19), with 9 RBI, 5 R, 3 BB, 3 2B, 3 SF. Phil has batted either 2nd or 3rd for UVA all season, and has been a major run producer with 46 RBI, which leads the powerful ACC, and is 7th in the nation. Other ACC ranks: 13 SB (3rd), 14 doubles (T-4th), .375 BA (15th). Everybody loves the sac fly, the ability to not strand a runner at third. Virginia leads the NCAA with 30 sacrifice flies as a team, and Phil leads the nation with 7 SF.

Lehigh’s Billy Goldman (Penn Charter) did his job laying down a fifth inning sacrifice bunt vs Navy this past Saturday. His 8th career sac bunt led to Lehigh’s only run in a 3-1 loss to the Midshipmen. Unfortunately for Billy and the Mountain Hawks, they were no hit by Navy’s Sam Long (Newman, GA) that day, only the 8th no-hitter in Navy's 114-year history.

Hometown Philly News & Notes for week ending March 29, 2009
Far and away the top two sports stories in the Hometown Philly area last week were the Villanova Wildcats advancing to the Final Four in a thriller against Pitt, and the Moccasins rising to the top of the college baseball coaches poll in Division II. Who? Of course everybody knows all about the Florida Southern Moccasins, and their 9-game win streak, and their 28-5 record, and their number one ranking. But anyone unfamiliar with the Wildcats can visit billypackerlovesphillyteams.com. So how does Florida Southern baseball impact your life? Well, it really doesn't, but one of our own is playing a pivotal role in the success of the Lakeland, Florida institution. Germantown Academy's Colin Kish is the starting left fielder, and has had a solid freshman season batting .304 in 18 games. Since returning to the lineup after an early season injury, Colin has hit .333 over his last 13 games, all starts. Florida Southern is 28-5 ... not bad, considering they started the season at 1-3!

BRIAN RORICK
UNIV. OF DELAWARE (ARCHBISHOP CARROLL)
HT: 6-1     WT: 205      JR RHP
TROOPER, PA
Entering his junior season, Brian Rorick was being counted upon by the coaching staff to help anchor the conference rotation. Now he is well on his way to becoming the Blue Hens ace. In his most recent outing, a Colonial Athletic Association contest against Old Dominion, Brian notched the win by allowing one earned run over eight innings. He allowed five hits, walked two and collected nine strikeouts in the 9-2 victory. Brian, the Blue Hens opening day starter, leads the CAA with 47 strikeouts in 38.2 IP (10.9 K/9 IP).
Although Rorick has won just two of his six starts, he has pitched well enough to keep UD in the game, and the Fightin' Blue Hens responded by winning all six of those outings. A transfer from Coastal Carolina, Brian also leads the CAA with 3 pick-offs (led all CAA righties with 6 pick-offs in 2008).

ESTEBAN MELETICHE
KEYSTONE COLLEGE (FRANKFORD)
HT: 5-11      WT: 175        FR SS
PHILADELPHIA, PA
The two-time Public League Player of the Year is finally getting comfortable with his new surroundings at Keystone College. Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche started the season moving around in the batting order, switching positions defensively, and not starting in every game. In his first six games he had just one hit in 16 at-bats. Since that time, Shortie has batted .473, hitting safely in 14 of his last 15 games, including a current 9-game streak. He is back to familiar territory - everyday starter at shortstop and leadoff hitter. His Keystone Giants have enjoyed similar success, winning their last six games, and
nine of their last ten to enter April with a gaudy 18-4 record. In six games last week, Meletiche hit .545 (12-22) with 13 runs scored. (First 6 games: 4 runs scored, last 15 games: 29 runs scored)

What Can Brown Do For You?
It was quite a week for Brown U soph Pete Greskoff (Malvern Prep). The 1B/DH homered in three consecutive series: a pinch hit HR at Southern Cal, and Ivy League blasts vs Cornell and Princeton. Pete also batted cleanup on March 24 as Brown shocked #17 Pepperdine, 20-8, in Malibu, CA. He went 1-3, with a run, walk and 2 RBI in the upset.
Hometown Philly History Takes Place in ... New York?
The Georgetown-St. John's contest at Citi Field on Sunday was a dress rehearsal for this week's Mets-Red Sox exhibition. The opening game at the new stadium drew the 7th largest crowd to ever watch an NCAA baseball game (22,397). And no matter how long this stadium exists, the very first hit ever will belong to the Hoyas' starting shortstop, Tom Elliott. He grounded a single up the middle in the top of the first to get his name into the record books. The St. Joseph's Prep grad also was instrumental in turning two key double plays that sealed the Hoyas win. Tom had a big week batting .429 (9-21) in 5 games with 2 doubles, a triple, a home run, 5 runs and 3 RBI. For the season, he is hitting .299 with 4 HR and a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts.

OK - I have covered enough men's and women's college basketball the last few weeks up and down the East Coast. Some of it was even entertaining! (Note: Take VCU in your office pools to beat UCLA. The Rams' Eric Maynor and Larry Sanders are the real deal). So without further delay, here are the first two weekly honors for the Hometown Philly Awards. In addition to the Player and Rookie of the Week, this season will feature a third category, the Pitcher of the Week. It gives more student athletes recognition, and in these downsizing times, the Hometown Awards are actually expanding.

Not The Loneliest Number
The number 23 had significance for Jim Carrey this past year, but on March 9, the number one was very prominent for Dickinson College's Matt Catania (Cardinal O'Hara). Although his Red Devils lost to the Wheaton College Thunder, Matt's boxscore had a lot of symmetry. The senior started at second base and batted 8th  - his stats line: 1 AB, 1 R, 1 H, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HP, 1 SB. Dickinson from Carlisle, PA was playing the game at Gene Autry Park in Phoenix, AZ as part of their spring training.
The Skinny on Shortie
Two-time Public League Player of the Year, Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche, is enrolled at Keystone College in La Plume, PA. While he played short and pitched for the Pioneers under Bob Peffle and Juan Namnun, Shortie has been all over the place this season: 2B, 3B, SS, DH (even pinch running). He has a couple of familiar faces with him at the downtown La Plume campus: former high school teammate and Salem CC transfer Juan Torres, and former North Catholic standout, Sean Murphy, a transfer from High Point (NC) University. Of course, if you visit La Plume (population: 603), just take the Lackawanna Trail to nearby Factoryville, PA for a great time. (Note: the third Saturday in August is known as Christy Mathewson Day, a holiday recognizing the Hall-of-Famer who was born in Factoryville on August 12, 1880)

March 5
Hometown Philly's Players of the Month for February:

HOMETOWN PHILLY AWARDS RETURN FOR FOURTH SEASON

Being in the middle of basketball season could mean only one thing - baseball is right around the corner! Well, actually, games have been going on at the collegiate level since early February involving former baseball players from the Philly area. As of February 16, there were 145 former Catholic, Inter-Ac and Public Leaguers on college rosters. These athletes, representing 63 colleges, will once again be recognized for their achievements on the field, with the HOMETOWN PHILLY PLAYER & ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONORS. The accolades will get underway in early March when most of the teams will have begun their season. A complete roster including high school affiliations will be forthcoming.
FIRST HALF OF FEBRUARY NOTEBOOK
Feb 7 - St. Augustine, FL: With the Philly area digging out from a snowstorm that embarrassed meteorologists, the 2009 college baseball season kicked off, as the first local to see action was Colin Kish (Germantown Academy). The freshman was the opening day starting left fielder for Florida Southern College. Colin made an impact in his second game, a 15-inning loss, and was on base three times (2 doubles, HBP) with two runs scored. The Moccasins of Lakeland, FL, were ranked 16th in the NCAA Division II Preseason Poll by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Unfortunately for Kish, he sustained a hairline fracture and is scheduled to return by mid-March.
Feb 8 - Wilson, NC: Kutztown junior LH Ryan Cassidy (Archbishop Wood) fell two outs shy of a complete game, but earned the win against Barton College (Wilson, NC). Ryan's line: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Feb 13 - Milledgeville, GA: After a sensational freshman season, Jared Farbman (Central) was given the honor of opening day starter, and he did not disappoint for Philadelphia University. He tossed six innings of no-hit, no-run baseball as the Rams beat 18th-ranked Georgia College and State, 3-1. Farbman earned the victory allowing five walks, while fanning eight. LaSalle U transfer Kevin McGovern (Archbishop Ryan), threw two scoreless innings for the save.
Feb 14 - Dover, DE: Sean Quigley (Roman Catholic) recorded the season opening save as Neumann College defeated Wesley, 2-0. In the second game of that doubleheader, Wesley fr SS Rob Benedict (Bonner) went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. Benedict for the week (5 games): .429 (6-14), 2 R, 2 SB, 4 RBI, 2 HP, 1 SF,  1 2B
Feb 15 - Harrogate, TN: Conor Kerins (Monsignor Bonner) earned the save in West Chester’s 5-2 win vs Lincoln Memorial. His line: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
