HOMETOWN PHILLY AWARDS FOR COLLEGE BASEBALL RETURNS FOR SEVENTH SEASON
    Really, who follows college baseball? Unless you have a friend or a relative, does anybody even care about college baseball? Well, hell yes, it is an acquired taste, this step-child to college football and hoops, but if you care even the slightest, then you are at the right place. For the seventh straight season on tedsilary.com, The Hometown Philly Awards will recognize accomplishments of local players at the collegiate level. This season, our guys are up and down the east coast panning out to Texas and up to Oklahoma, then up to Illinois. As of Valentine's Day 2012, there are 151 former Catholic, Inter-Ac and Public Leaguers on 75 different college rosters. Weekly honors will start in early March. A complete roster including high school affiliations will be forthcoming.

2012 Hometown Philly All-Star & All-Rookie Selections
Christian Walker has been named The Hometown Philly Player of the Year for the second straight season. What an amazing collegiate career for Walker, the Kennedy-Kenrick grad, who was a big part in South Carolina winning the 2010 and 2011 College World Series Championships. The Gamecocks quest for a three-peat came up short, as they lost two straight games against Arizona in this season's CWS Finals. Christian has already signed with the Orioles and is playing for the Aberdeen IronBirds. His patience at the plate, along with a little pop and great OBP numbers should help him rise through the O's minor league ranks.
Kyle Mullen has been tabbed as the 2012 Hometown Philly Pitcher of the Year. It was a breakthrough season for Kyle and the Hawks. St. Joe's made the A-10 playoffs for the first time in school history. Kyle posted a 6-4 record with a 3.07 ERA, set some school records, and was unbeatable in A-10 play. By the way, the Hawks truly needed his pitching - they hit only .229 this season, which ranked 288th out of 291 teams.
Centenary shortstop Joe Forcellini (La Salle HS) was selected as the 2012 Hometown Philly Rookie of the Year, and Matt Petrizzi (Harford CC/Conwell-Egan) got the nod for Rookie Pitcher of the Year.
Here are the seventh annual Hometown Philly All-Star Teams and All-Rookie Team. It was a record-setting season as the three Philly leagues (Catholic, Public and Inter-Academic) contributed 203 players from 95 different colleges, with 65 freshmen. Good wishes to all of the honorees and their devoted families, teammates, coaches, managers, and trainers. As always, thanks to the man himself, Ted Silary, for always touting "our guys."
Still to come: 2013 Freshman Class ... right now, I have a list of 26 incoming freshmen who could potentially be 2013 Hometown Philly Rookies. If you know of any graduating Inter/Ac, Catholic and Public League baseball players taking it to the next level in college, contact me just in case I don't have that player. HOMETOWN PHILLY AT THE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

    The Philly-area will be represented in the finals of the College World Series for the third straight season as Christian Walker (Kennedy-Kenrick) and his South Carolina teammates aim for a "3-peat." Not since the early-to-mid 70's has a team gone back-to-back-to-back. Walker is firmly entrenched as the Gamecocks' 3-hole hitter and first baseman, and seems to always be coming to the plate with runners on. He has 26 career CWS hits, second all-time only to North Carolina's Dustin Ackley, now with the Seattle Mariners. Recently, Christian was taken in the fourth round of the MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles.

    South Carolina had its NCAA Tournament record 22-game win streak ended in the second game it played in Omaha, a 2-1 loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks. In the double-elimination format, SC had to win three straight to get back to the finals, and that's just what they did. By beating Kent State and Arkansas, they became the first team to win two tourney games in the same day in sixty years (Holy Cross, 1952). The following day, closer Matt Price (Sumter, SC) pitched three scoreless innings for the win, his fifth, a CWS career record.

cHometown Philly Postseason Report & MLB Draft Recapc
There is plenty to get caught up with, but the big story on Hometown Philly News is the national championship won by the West Chester Golden Rams. WCU (46-10) wins its first national baseball championship, and becomes the first-ever PSAC team to win the national title. The D-II Golden Rams swept through the NCAA Regionals and World Series by winning all eight games played. By the way, West Chester was picked 30th in the Preseason Media Poll. Two Hometown Philly guys made contributions for this team under first-year Jad Prachniak: Conor Kerins and Matt McAllister.
Conor Kerins (sr LHP-Monsignor Bonner) went 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA in 7 appearances this season. Not only did Conor finish with a 12-5 career record, but he goes out as a member of an NCAA National Championship Team, a claim that only the very, very few can make!
Matt McAllister (soph RGP-Archbishop Wood) was originally ticketed for West Chester a few seasons back. Due to a coaching change, Matt opted for Penn State-Abington as a frosh in 2011, and gained national notice with a no-hitter. Matt made the choice to enroll at West Chester and along with his first-year coach, tasted the ultimate. Matt went 6-0 for the season, including a win against Southern New Hampshire on the march to the national title game.
McAllister's two-season collegiate totals: 10-4, 2.32 ERA, 20 APP, 101 IP, 84 H, 31 BB, 87 K
SUPER TIME OF YEAR
The NCAA Super Regionals are upon us, and three players from the Hometown Philly roster will be representing our area, most notably, Christian Walker. His South Carolina Gamecocks are the two-time defending NCAA champions, and have won 19 straight tournament games, an NCAA record.

Although the Gamecocks are appearing in the Super Regionals for the 10th time in the last 13 seasons, it was not until Christian Walker's freshman season that they were to advance and win the national championship. In Christian's sophomore season, USC won it all again. This really could be some storybook stuff if South Carolina could three-peat. Walker was drafted in the fourth round by the Baltimore Orioles in this week's draft.

XKEENAN KISH, Florida soph RHP (Germantown Academy)X
Last season, Florida went all the way to the NCAA Championship Round, losing to South Carolina. It was a valuable learning experience for then-freshman Keenan Kish. He did appear in two NCAA Tournament games (4.2 scoreless innings), but ultimately the Gators lost two straight in the best-of-three finals. This season, Florida's current pitching staff is stocked with several draft picks, so Keenan looks to be a major contributor in 2013.

Stony Brook is the only Regional #4-seed to make the sweet 16 (Breakdown: #1-seed: 10 teams, #2-seed: 3 teams, #3-seed: 2 teams, #4-seed: Stony Brook). JOE HARVEY
PITTSBURGH RHP (KENNEDY-KENRICK)

Pitt Head Coach Joe Jordano witnessed two freshmen lead his bullpen in saves this season. Tanner Wilt (Allison Park, PA), has a team-high six saves, while Kennedy-Kenrick alum Joe Harvey is next with three saves. Harvey appeared in only two of the Panthers' first 16 games, but has since provided one of the team's most reliable arms out of the pen. He earned his most recent save by recording one out, but it was a big one. In the opener of a series at Seton Hall, Joe came in and struck out the only batter he faced, with the tying run in the on-deck circle, as Pitt prevailed, 7-4. The Panthers conclude the regular season hosting #22 Louisville. The crucial three-game series, along with results from Villanova/Rutgers and Georgetown/Cincinnati will determine whether or not Pitt grabs the final playoff spot for the Big East Tournament.

KEYSTONE SR 2B (FRANKFORD)
HT: 6-0 ... WT: 190 ... PHILADELPHIA, PA
Who would have thought a guy from the Philadelphia Public League would go out to the sprawling metropolis of La Plume, PA, and re-write the school's and conference's record books? Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche just became the first player to receive the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons. During Keystone's recent 22-game winning streak, Meletiche was creating havoc for opposing pitchers out of the leadoff spot. Could it be that Tim Cooney will have his name called during the 2012 MLB draft? If so, he is capping off a productive career for the Demon Deacons. On April 20, Cooney was once again selected to open up an ACC weekend series on a Friday night. He went eight innings in a 5-1 win against Virginia Tech, allowing just one run on four hits, while whiffing eight Hokies. As in 2011, Tim finds himself among the ACC leaders in innings pitched and strikeouts.

The final start of the season for Scranton lefty Robert Della Polla was memorable indeed. In a 4-3 win, he struck out a career-high 11 batters against Catholic University. It was another complete-game performance, his fifth of the season. Robert finished in a tie for the most strikeouts (53) in the Landmark Conference with Moravian sr RHP Brendan Close (Bethlehem, PA). The Scranton Royals ended their season with a 20-16 record, missing the conference postseason tourney.

CONOR KERINS
WEST CHESTER SR LHP (MONSIGNOR BONNER)
HT: 6-0 ... WT: 195 ... DREXEL HILL, PA
In the span of six days, Conor notched two wins, running his season record to 3-0, and his career record to 12-4. On April 30, he earned the "W" by limiting Philadelphia University to an unearned run in three innings, while striking out four. Saving the best for last, Kerins was honored to get the starting mound assignment for the PSAC Championship against Kutztown. Conor pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits, and was the pitcher of record in the 10-0 win, as West Chester came all the way back from the loser's bracket to win their first conference title since 2009.

JAMEY MINNEMEYER
GWYNEDD-MERCY RHP (LANSDALE CATHOLIC)
HT: 6-3 ... WT: 190 ... LANSDALE, PA
OK, it is a given that the Philadelphia Biblical University (PBU) baseball team has a difficult time competing in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). Yes, it is also a given that like our own beloved Phillies, PBU suffers from a noticeable lack of offense, as illustrated in their .219 team batting average, last in the conference by an astounding 60 points. Now that all of that has been written and read, it was still a remarkable performance by freshman Jamey Minnemeyer on April 20 vs PBU. In seven innings of work, he allowed only one base runner on a second inning, two-out double. He did not issue any walks, and of the 21 outs he recorded, a whopping 15 of them were strikeouts (five looking). The 15 strikeouts set a Griffins single-game record, breaking the mark of 13, set in April 2001 by Steve Troy.

KURT SOWA
RIDER RHP (FATHER JUDGE)
HT: 6-4 ... WT: 193 ... BENSALEM, PA
Two pitchers on the Rider Broncs pitching staff share the team lead in games started this season. Redshirt soph Mike Murphy (Hamilton, NJ) and Father Judge grad Kurt Sowa each have 11 starts (thru 5/8). On April 29, in the finale of a three-game series at Jersey City, Sowa limited Saint Peter's base runners, going 6.1 innings, and allowed only two hits, an earned run, with 2 BB and 2 K. For the season, the freshman is 3-4 with a 4.65 ERA (Broncs team ERA: 5.52).

CHRIS O'BRIEN
NORTH CAROLINA LHP (MALVERN PREP)

He retired all six batters he faced in those two games, recording seven outs (groundout DP). In the Tar Heels' 6-5 victory against BC on May 5, Chris picked up his first collegiate win.

  The Hometown Philly Awards usually come out on the Monday or Tuesday following the previous week's action. Sorry for the delay in announcing last week's winners, but better late than never. Being a freelancer in television production, it seems to be feast or famine, as far as work is concerned. Right now, I am close to the end of a stretch of 20 straight days working coverage of the Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Union soccer, and The Great Sports Debate. So without further delay, here we go!

JOE CONAWAY
LEHIGH SR 1B/DH (GERMANTOWN ACADEMY)
HT: 6-4 ... FT. WASHINGTON, PA
  Nobody would ever confuse Juan Pierre with Joe Conaway. Whereas the Phillies makeshift leadoff hitter is all about singles (83% of career hits), the Lehigh senior's recent tear was all about getting extra bases. Only one of his eight hits last week was a single. He pelted the pitching staffs of Scranton, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Bucknell for six doubles and a triple, to go along with nine runs scored, three RBI, and a .444 OBP. Joe is not just about slugging, as he helped his team by also laying down a sac bunt. In a 17-3 rout of Scranton, Conaway reached base in all five plate appearances with three doubles, a triple, and a walk, and scored all five times. He improved his season batting average 18 points to .274, and also raised his season OBP 18 points to .373 for the Mountain Hawks.

KYLE MULLEN
SAINT JOSEPH'S JR RHP (ST. JOSEPH'S PREP)
HT: 6-0 ... WT: 170 ... BERWYN, PA
Kyle Mullen would be wise not to alter his rituals on the Thursdays before his Atlantic 10 Conference starts the following day. He has been lights out for St. Joe's this season on Fridays, getting the starting nod in A-10 series openers. On Friday the 13th (of April), he limited the conference-leading Minutemen of UMass to five hits en route to a 6-0 shutout. Over the last two seasons, Kyle has started eight A-10 openers, and the Hawks won all of those games. Mullen has been on an extended hot run this spring, going 4-2 with a 1.86 ERA in his last 53 IP, allowing just 40 hits and 7 walks.

In a 4-1 win vs Philadelphia Biblical, Matt hurled seven innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits, striking out six, and most impressively, issuing no free passes. As a senior at Bonner last season, Matt was selected by the coaches as the Red Division MVP, along with La Salle High's Joe Forcellini, now excelling as a freshman at Centenary.

BRIAN O'GRADY
RUTGERS SO OF (ARCHBISHOP WOOD)
HT: 6-2 ... WT: 200 ... WARMINSTER, PA
The Scarlet Knights found their future leadoff hitter last March. It took a little over a month into the 2011 season for Brian O'Grady, then in his freshman season, to fit comfortably on the top of head coach Fred Hill's lineup. Ever since then, O'Grady has become firmly entrenched as the igniter for the Rutgers offense. Over his last nine games, Brian has batted .441 (15-34), and is doing what a leadoff batter must do - get on base. He has reaching base safely in those nine games, with an impressive .568 on-base percentage, and 11 runs scored. For the season, he is batting .325 with a .428 OBP.
Honorable Mention:

RICK KAZIGIAN
WIDENER SR RHP (MALVERN PREP)
HT: 5-10 ... WEST CHESTER, PA
Entering last Saturday's game vs Arcadia, Rick Kazigian had allowed 7 walks and 40 hits in 27 innings this season. And after walking leadoff hitter Kyle Jackson to start the game, nobody would be able to predict what was to come ... not the coaches and players from both teams, nor the reported one hundred fans in attendance. Kazigian got out of the inning with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts. The Pride would go on to score in each of the first three innings, staking Rick to a 4-0 lead. Meanwhile, he mowing 'em down, inducing 7 ground ball outs in the first four innings. Remember that first inning walk to Kyle Jackson? Well, there would be no more base runners on the day for Arcadia, as Kazigian retired the next 21 batters after the walk, en route to a seven-inning no-hitter. For his feat, Rick was named Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Week, and was selected to the national D3.com Team of the Week.

The Harford Fighting Owls entered the mini-Easter break with a 28-7 record. The last member of the trio is Jon McAllister, currently on a 16-game hitting streak. .Hometown Philly Salutes our Presidents
Here is part six of the presidential name-game in order from 1 through 44. College baseball players have the same last name of at least 35 of those 44. Who are the missing nine? Through the first 25 presidents, only three chief execs were not represented: #8 Martin Van Buren, #20 James Garfield, #25 James McKinley.
#26 THEODORE ROOSEVELT - This is a No-Go for Teddy The Roughrider - No Roosevelts playing college baseball
#27 WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT - Taft was the most obese prez and the last to have facial hair in office (not including Eleanor Roosevelt) - No namesakes here

NICK BUSILLO
MUHLENBERG SR OF/DH (MALVERN PREP)
HT: 6-1 ... WT: 225 ... MEDIA, PA
Nick Busillo is living up to the phrase "cleanup hitter." When Nick comes to the plate, if there are runners on base, they are not there for long. He has been clearing the bases all season long. In 22 games this season, Nick has a staggering 29 RBI. Of course, having games with 7 RBI, 5 RBI and 4 RBI doesn't hurt the bottom line. In a win against Ursinus this week, Nick went yard and added another two ribbies to his collection. For the season, he is batting .310 with 5 HR, and an on-base pct of .410.
Honorable Mention:
* Joe Armata, Neumann U jr C (Neumann-Goretti) .417 BA (5-12), HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, 3 walks, 3 doubles
* Mark Donato, Indian River CC so 1B (Neumann-Goretti) .500 BA (7-14), 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 doubles, 1 HBP

COLIN STRAPP
GORDON (MA) SO RHP (CARDINAL DOUGHERTY)
HT: 6-2 ... WT: 160 ... PHILADELPHIA, PA
Unfortunately, all of the people who loved Cardinal Dougherty High School have just their memories to go on at this point. They were not spared from the chopping block like the four Philadelphia Catholic high schools a month ago. But although Dougherty is now shuttered, along with North Catholic and Kennedy-Kenrick, those three schools are still alive at Hometown Philly, each with alumni playing at the next level. Colin Strapp picked up his first collegiate win hurling four scoreless innings of relief, allowing no runs and just two base runners (1 hit, 1 walk) this past week. He has been a huge asset to the Gordon Fighting Scots pitching staff this season. In six appearances, he has yielded only one earned run in 10.2 IP (0.84 ERA).
Honorable Mention:
* Kyle Mullen,
Saint Joseph's jr RHP (St. Joseph's Prep) March 30 vs Rhode Island: Win, 8 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
* Brian Wendig, Susquehanna jr LHP (Malvern Prep) March 27 vs Elizabethtown: No Decision, 8.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 K
* Matt Petrizzi, Harford CC fr RHP/IF (Conwell-Egan) Win vs Prince George's CC with shutout inning of relief (season: 3-1, 0 ER, 11.1 IP)
* Seamus Finnegan, Chestnut Hill College fr RHP (Archbishop Carroll) Improved record to 2-1 with win vs Lincoln (0 ER in last 11.1 IP)

DOM RAIA
CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE RHP (GAMP)
HT: 6-0 ... WT: 185 ... PHILADELPHIA, PA
Dom Raia is writing his own chapter of playing college baseball. Dad, Dom Sr., was an All-Public star at Southern, and went on to play at Temple, and was at every one of Dom Jr's high school games shouting out encouragement. All of the hard work paid off for Dom Jr. who is a freshman at Chestnut Hill College. Raia recorded his first two wins earlier in March, but it was his no decision that gets mentioned here. On March 26 vs Dominican, Dom had perhaps his best outing of the year, pitching seven innings, and yielding no earned runs. But the big stat was the walks he issued: none. He struck out a career-high nine batters, but his Griffins lost the game 7-4.
Honorable Mention:
* Albert Baur, Newberry 1B/3B (Neumann-Goretti) .429 BA (3-7), 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, double, SB
* Joe Forcellini, Centenary SS (La Salle HS) .300 BA (3-10), 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 SB, 1 double, 1 triple
* Mike McLaughlin, Chestnut Hill College OF (Father Judge) .400 BA (6-15), 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB, 1 double
* Keenan Howard, Dickinson RHP/IF (Lansdale Catholic) RBI single in first collegiate at bat
.Hollingsworth Hitting Heroics
Widener senior Bill Hollingsworth (Monsignor Bonner) hit safely in his first 19 games of the season, and reached base safely in his first 21 games. However, he was held hitless on March 30 in a 12-9 loss vs Elizabethtown, when he went 0-for-4 with a RBI and a walk. During the streak, Bill batted .493 (36-73) with 23 RBI and 19 runs.

ROB BENEDICT
WESLEY SR SS (MONSIGNOR BONNER)
HT: 5-11 ... WT: 175 ... DREXEL HILL, PA
Getting playing time as a freshman did not lead to great offensive numbers for Rob Benedict in 2009. But his experiences that season (29 GP, .208 BA) helped lead to All-Conference honors as a soph and junior, and undoubtedly, as a senior. In five games last week, Rob hit .435 (10-23), with six runs and five steals. Those stats represent what he has done throughout his years at Wesley - get hits ... steal bases ... score runs. He is hitting and running his way up the Wolverines all-time leader lists in several offensive categories. In 129 career games, he has a .358 batting average with 174 hits, 129 runs and 82 stolen bases. This season, he is tied for fifth in the nation with 22 stolen bases (D-III).
Honorable Mention:
* Jeff Lynch, Johns Hopkins jr 1B/3B (St. Joseph's Prep) 7 GP, .370 BA (10-27), 1 HR, 6 RBI, 9 R, 4 doubles (season: 19 hits, 10 XBH)
* Tim LeCompte, Scranton jr SS (Roman Catholic) 4 GP, .400 BA (6-15), 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 R (season: .323 BA, .417 OBP)

RICK KAZIGIAN
WIDENER SR RHP (MALVERN PREP)
HT: 5-10 ... WEST CHESTER, PA
First-year Widener head coach Mike LaRosa had the good fortune to inherit a squad with tons of experience, including the Inter-Ac League's Rick Kazigian from Malvern Prep, along with a handful of former Catholic Leaguers. The Pride are 13-7 overall with a 4-2 Commonwealth Conference record. On March 24 vs Lebanon Valley, Kazigian had the good fortune to be staked to a hefty 8-0 lead through two innings. Some of the offensive contributions came from Sean Saverio (La Salle HS) and Bill Hollingsworth (Monsignor Bonner). Rick focused with the big lead (no walks!) and left after six innings, yielding five hits, one unearned run and six Ks to pick up the win.
RICK KAZIGIAN SEASON: 3-1, 5.09 ERA ... CAREER: 13-9, 4.10 ERA, 44 APP
Honorable Mention:

cHometown Philly Rookie of the Week for week ending March 25, 2012
TOM DITRO
PENN STATE ABINGTON SS (ARCHBISHOP RYAN)
HT: 5-10 ... WT: 155 ... PHILADELPHIA, PA
The Penn State Abington baseball program has made tremendous strides the last couple of years in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) last season. After reaching the NEAC Championship round in 2011, Head Coach Joe Pavlow was looking for strength up the middle, and what he found has been a revelation. Tom Ditro has emerged with his play in the field, and is being recognized for his contributions at the plate. Besides the Hometown Philly honors, Ditro was also named as NEAC Player of the Week and selected to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week. His stats from last week: 7 GP, .407 BA (11-27), 10 RBI, 6 R, 5 SB. Tom now leads the conference with 10 doubles and 27 RBI in his freshman season for the Nittany Lions.
Honorable Mention:
* Jon McAllister, Harford Community College OF (Chestnut Hill Academy) 3 GP, .375 BA (6-16), 3 R (raised season BA from .333 to .343)

* Chris O'Brien, North Carolina LHP (Malvern Prep) March 20 vs Princeton: 2.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 K (1 ER in last 6 IP)
cHollingsworth Hitting Heroics
Widener senior Bill Hollingsworth (Monsignor Bonner) is continuing to slice and dice opposing pitchers, and has hit safely in 19 games since the beginning of this season. As of this posting, Widener has played 20 games, and Bill has played every one of 'em. Why not a 20-game hit streak? On March 24, Widener was throttling Lebanon Valley 14-1. Perhaps Aggies Head Coach Keith Evans said, "Don't let that guy get a hit." Bill finished the game with four plate appearances, but no official at bats, thus keeping the his batting streak intact. He was hit by a pitch twice, and walked twice, and also scored three runs. Also helping out the pitching staff, Bill earned his second save of the season just one day earlier.

TY YOUNG

LOUISVILLE SO 3B (MALVERN PREP)
HT: 5-10 ... WT: 173 ... COATESVILLE, PA
For the second time this season, Ty Young has been selected Hometown Philly Player of the Week. His 21st-ranked Louisville Cardinals have posted a 15-6 record against non-conference opponents, preparing to enter their Big East opener this weekend. In his last six games, Ty has batted at a .550 clip (11-20), with 8 RBI and 10 runs. After eating his Wheaties, or eating his can of spinach, or whatever ... and after playing 68 career games with 220 plate appearances, Ty hit his first college home run, inspiring an 8-run first inning in a 13-5 win vs Ball State. For good measure, Young went deep in the very next game, as the Cardinals rolled in a 20-0 blitz against Ohio State. Louisville opens Big East play this weekend with three games at home vs Cincinnati, and host another three-gamer the following weekend vs Villanova.

TOM NEELY
KUTZTOWN JR LHP (ARCHBISHOP RYAN)
HT: 6-2 ... WT: 195 ... PHILADELPHIA, PA
The Kutztown Golden Bears pitching staff has been stingy in the early going and the wins have been coming. Tom pitched four scoreless innings in a pair of wins against Shippensburg last weekend, and also notched his first career save. For the season, Neely is 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA (1 ER in 13.1 IP), and an amazing .111 opposing batting average. Kutztown's team ERA as of March 19 was a PSAC-leading 2.67, with Mercyhurst next at 2.94. JOE HARVEY
PITTSBURGH RHP (KENNEDY-KENRICK)
HT: 6-2 ... WT: 220 ... AUDUBON, PA
Redshirt freshman Joe Harvey had quite an impact helping the Pitt Panthers defeat the Hartford Hawks this past Sunday. He entered the game in the sixth inning with the score tied 6-6, and pitched four perfect innings with six strikeouts to pick up his first win as a collegian. In his first inning, Joe went K-PO-K. In the bottom half of the frame, his teammates plated three runs, giving Pitt a 9-6 lead. His last three innings went unblemished: GO-K-GO, GO-K-K & GO-GO-K to finish it up. In his previous outing on March 10, he allowed just one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings vs Miami (Ohio). .Hometown Philly Salutes our Presidents
Here is part five of the presidential name-game in order from 1 through 44. College baseball players have the same last name of at least 35 of those 44. Who are the missing nine? Through the first 20 presidents, the only numbers not represented are #8 Martin Van Buren and #20 James Garfield. Time is running out - where are all the other no-names?!
#21 CHESTER ALAN ARTHUR - Scott Arthur, Texas A&M (Chester Arthur thrust into presidency when James Garfield was assassinated)
#22 GROVER CLEVELAND - Andrew Cleveland, Clemson (The old-timers out there probably remember MLB righty Reggie Cleveland)
#23 BENJAMIN HARRISON - Drew Harrison, Oklahoma (Benjamin Harrison's grand-daddy was the 9th prez, William Henry Harrison)
#24 GROVER CLEVELAND - Cole Cleveland, Morehead State (Surprised to get one Cleveland, not to mention two for this only presidential repeater)
#25 WILLIAM McKINLEY - Chalk up another no-no. Closest one, but it doesn't count is Harding (AR) outfielder McKinley Duke.

Hometown Philly Player of the Week for week ending March 11, 2012
BILL HOLLINGSWORTH
WIDENER SR 1B/RHP (MONSIGNOR BONNER)
HT: 6-2 DREXEL HILL, PA
According to the Widener website, Bill Hollingsworth is a having "a dream season." Hard to argue with that, considering he has hit in all ten games this season, and is batting .550 (22-40) with a .617 OBP. Not only that, but in the past week, Bill shedded his first base mitt and went to the mound on two occasions, earning his first collegiate save (vs Hiram), and pitching a scoreless inning vs Haverford. BOB HOPKINS
CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE JR RHP (NORTH CATHOLIC)
HT: 5-9 WT: 165 PHILADELPHIA, PA
Playing eight games in a five-day span during their Florida Coast Spring Training presented Chestnut Hill College head coach Bob Spratt with pitching concerns. But he didn't have any worries when he handed the ball to junior Bob Hopkins ... twice! Bob pitched in the first and seventh games of the road trip, and earned complete-games wins vs Pitt Johnstown and Mercy College. During the week, Bob allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings, lowering his career ERA to 2.68 in 34 appearances. After CHC started their season at 2-6, the Griffins responded by reeling off five consecutive wins.
Honorable Mention:
* Kyle Mullen,
Saint Joseph's jr RHP (St. Joseph's Prep) Win vs Iona: 7.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K (Hawks first on-campus game since 1958)

MATT PETRIZZI
HARFORD (MA) COMMUNITY COLLEGE RHP (CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 6-0 WT: 170 LEVITTOWN, PA
What does Matt Petrizzi do for an encore? After playing a dozen games at second base and shortstop, he made his collegiate debut as a starting pitcher. All he did was throw a five-inning no-hitter in a 10-0 pasting of Jamestown. Matt walked one and hit one and finished with five strikeouts in what became a complete-game no-hitter after his Fighting Owls scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to make it a ten-run rule game. Here's hoping that head coach Tom Eller and athletic director/assistant coach Ken Krsolovic don't get too used to no-hitters. Petrizzi's gem was the team's second no-no in the past week. Another freshman, Taylor Nace (Marysville, PA) tossed seven innings of no-hit ball in a 12-0 blanking of Delaware County Community College four days earlier.
Honorable Mention:
* Jamey Minnemeyer, Gwynedd-Mercy RHP (Lansdale Catholic) March 6 vs Penn State Altoona: CG, 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, first collegiate win
* Aaron Novak, Penn State fr RF (Germantown Academy) 3 GP, .400 BA (4-10), HR, 2 RBI, 4 R (Back-to-back two-hit games at UAB)

CHRIS COWELL
RICHMOND SR C/DH (MALVERN PREP)
HT: 6-4       WT: 215       DEVON, PA
    After spending five days in almost-beautiful Richmond, VA covering the CAA Men's Basketball Tournament, it is ironic that last week's top player is a Richmond Spider. While Shaka Smart and his VCU Rams were thrilling hometown folks just miles away at the Richmond Coliseum, Chris Cowell was also wreaking his brand of havoc against the Saint Peter's Peacocks. In game one of a doubleheader sweep against the Peacocks (women's teams use the nickname "Peahens"), Chris had two homers and six RBI. In the nightcap, he blasted another HR, and finished the day going 5-for-9, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, double, SF. With his three big blasts, Chris has officially made it onto Richmond's all-time HR list. He is tied for tenth with 31 career dingers. Not too far ahead of him in a tie for fifth place is Hatboro-Horsham great Jim Fasano with 35.
Honorable Mention:

KYLE MULLEN
SAINT JOSEPH'S JR RHP (ST. JOSEPH'S PREP)
HT: 6-0       WT: 170       BERWYN, PA
    Usually a pitcher is honored for winning games, but it is hardly Kyle Mullen's fault he didn't earn a "W" in a recent outing at the University of Washington. Saint Joseph's first 12 games of the season were on the road (3-NC, 3-TN, 6-WA). And while the Hawks only recorded one win in that stretch, they were close in many others, suffering five one-run losses. Such was the case with Mullen, as he took the mound in Husky Ballpark on March 3 in Seattle. Kyle limited UW to just two hits and a walk in his six-inning complete game, along with five strikeouts. The Hawks are hoping to change their fortunes as they return to Hawk Hill for the first time since 1958 at their new baseball facility on the James J. Maguire Campus.
Honorable Mention:
* Tim Cooney,
Wake Forest jr LHP (Malvern Prep) March 3 vs Marshall: Demon Deacons won 6-1, Tim gets the win (2-1), 8 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 9 K
* Russell Trojan, Philadelphia U jr RHP (Cardinal O'Hara) Earned win in relief vs #8 Southern Connecticut: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
* Bobby Della Polla, Scranton jr LHP (St. Joseph's Prep) Complete-game two-hit win vs Albright (7 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 10 K

KEVIN MACK
CONCORD (WV) LHP (ARCHBISHOP RYAN)
HT: 6-3     WT: 185     LANGHORNE, PA
    When Concord Mountain Lions head coach Andrew Wright went to his bullpen for the third time, there were no outs in the fifth inning. His staff had already allowed Shippensburg to stroke 15 hits and score 13 runs. Kevin Mack gave up a single to the first batter he faced, and that would be the only safety against him in the next four innings. Although Concord did lose the game, 15-8, Mack turned in his most impressive performance of the young season, going 4 innings, allowing one run on one hit. He pitched 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth, striking out five of those six batters.
Honorable Mention:

* Albert Baur, Newberry (SC) 3B (Neumann-Goretti) 4 GP, .333 BA (5-15), 2 RBI, R, 2B

TY YOUNG
#14 LOUISVILLE    SO IF    (MALVERN PREP)
HT: 5-10     WT: 173      COATESVILLE, PA
 * Last Week: 4 GP, .583 BA (7-12), 3 R, 2 SB, 2 Doubles, .917 Slug%
    The Louisville Cardinals are flying high right now. They have won six straight games, their longest win streak since May 2010. And right in the middle of things is Malvern Prep's Ty Young. He has started the last five games and has hit safely in all of them. His big performance of the week was a three-hit effort with a pair of doubles and a triple in a 7-2 win against Eastern Kentucky. A season ago, Tyler played in 52 games, making 35 starts (17 at 2B, 11 at 3B, 7 at DH). With his recent outings, all at third base, it appears as if Ty has won the starting nod at the hot corner for the hot Cardinals.

TIM COONEY
WAKE FOREST JR LHP (MALVERN PREP)
HT: 6-3     WT: 195      COLLEGEVILLE, PA
 * Feb. 25 vs Cincinnati: Win, 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 10 K
    Wake Forest is counting on a big season from junior Tim Cooney. This past week, he shut down the Cincinnati Bearcats, limiting them to three hits and no runs through seven sparkling innings. Tim reached double-digit strikeouts with 10 K's in the win at the Wake Forest Invitational. All the Demon Deacons could hope for is consistency from their junior lefty. They should have no worries. Dating back to mid-April of last season, Cooney has recorded a 5-2 record, with a 3.12 ERA and 60 strikeouts over 57.2 innings. For his performance against Cincy, Tim was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week, the second time he has won that honor in his career.

     Greg has become the starting first baseman for the Spartans who have sprinted out to a 6-1 record in the first two weeks. He had three straight games with two hits last week, and came through in the clutch in a 12-6 vs Eastern Kentucky. In that game, Greg delivered a pair of two-out, two-run singles. The next day, he clubbed his first collegiate homer, in a 3-RBI effort.

HOMETOWN PHILLY AWARDS - PRESIDENTS DAY EDITION
    As of Presidents Day 2012, there are 163 former baseball players from the three Philly leagues (Catholic, Inter-Ac and Public). These student-athletes represent 82 different college programs. The D-I schools opened their season this past weekend, and although some games were postponed due to rain and unplayable field conditions, the majority of the games got in, and there are now numbers in the proverbial book. So here we go with another season of accolades for these guys, it's the Hometown Philly Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Week Awards. If you reach the end of this posting, you will be rewarded not only with this week's usual List of Names, but also a special list of Presidential names playing college baseball!
Hometown Philly Player of the Week for week ending February 19, 2012
STEPHEN BRUNO
#17 VIRGINA    JR 3B    (ST. JOSEPH'S PREP/GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC)
HT: 5-9     WT: 165      AUDUBON, NJ
 * Last Week: 3 GP, .400 BA (4-10), 3 R, 3 SB, 1 Triple, .571 OBP
    UVA lost major talent from their NCAA Tournament teams of the past two seasons, elevating Stephen Bruno into a pivotal for this season's squad. Batting third, he hit safely in all three games as Virginia opened the season with every possible outcome: a win, a loss and a tie. After opening the Myrtle Beach Caravelle Resort Tournament with a loss vs Boston College (ACC), the Cavs responded with a 9-3 win against #35 Coastal Carolina (Big South). Saturday's night game against James Madison (CAA) finished in a tie after steady rains led to poor field conditions. Earlier in the fourth inning, Stephen notched the first hit of the game (both teams combined for only seven hits), and came around to score the game's first run. He also scored UVA's fourth run of the game in the eighth, as the teams would settle for a 4-4 tie.
Honorable Mention:
* Tommy Coyle,
 #3 North Carolina jr SS (Germantown Academy) 3 GP, .385 BA (5-13), 6 R, 2 3B, 2 SB, .438 OBP (reached base safely in 32 straight games since April 17, 2011)

Hometown Philly Pitcher of the Week for week ending February 19, 2012
KURT SOWA
RIDER FR RHP (FATHER JUDGE)
HT: 6-4     WT: 193      BENSALEM, PA
 * Collegiate debut at Norfolk State (Feb. 17): Win, 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
    Rider Broncs head coach Barry Davis was hoping for some quality innings from freshman Kurt Sowa in the second game of a doubleheader at Norfolk State. In the first game, only one run was scored and it was in the bottom of the 14th as the host Spartans prevailed. In the nightcap, Sowa was impressive. He was nicked for single runs in each of the first two innings, but allowed just one hit over his final three innings (5 K), finishing with eight strikeouts and earning the "W" in his first college game.
Honorable Mention:
* Tim Cooney,
 Wake Forest jr LHP (Malvern Prep) Lost at New Mexico State: 5.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 11 K (7 looking)
* John McDonald, Monmouth sr RHP (Conwell-Egan) One scoreless inning with a strikeout, 14-2 romp vs Youngstown State (Hawks start 3-0 for first time since 1994)
Hometown Philly Rookie of the Week for week ending February 19, 2012
MIKE (ZOOM) ZOLK
#3 NORTH CAROLINA 3B (NEUMANN-GORETTI)
HT: 5-9     WT: 187      PHILADELPHIA, PA
 *  Last Week: 3 GP, .250 BA (2-8), 5 RBI, 2 doubles, 1 R, 3 SF
     It's unlikely Zoom Zolk will ever set the NCAA sac fly record, but in UNC's first three games, he has three of  'em. His first freshman hit almost went out, but he settled for a double high off the wall in right-center. After having a 6-0 first inning lead in the series finale, Xavier stunned the third-ranked Tar Heels with eight runs in the second inning. Mike helped lead the comeback with a double and 4 RBI, along with a pair of SF, as the Heels earned a 16-10 win. Along with Tommy Coyle (Germantown Academy) at shortstop, this keystone combination from the keystone state is showing the Chapel Hillers what Philly players are like. These guys are great ambassadors for the game, their schools, families, friends and neighborhoods!!
Honorable Mention:
* Greg Guers, South Carolina Upstate 1B (Germantown Academy) 2 GP, .444 (4-9), 3 R, 2 RBI as the Spartans easily beat Eastern Michigan and Ball State
* Chris Harvey, #12 Vanderbilt C/DH (Germantown Academy) Debut game: Vandy's first hit (4th inning double) against Stanford's Mark Appel, projected to be the top pick in June's MLB draft
* Joe Giacchino, Delaware CF (Malvern Prep) Season-opener at University of Houston: 1-3, R, RBI, BB in 7-5 loss
Out of the Ordinary
* HEY, WHERE DID MY WALK GO? Ty Young (Malvern Prep) pinch hit for Louisville in the ninth inning against Minnesota last Friday, and drew a bases loaded walk cutting the Golden Gophers lead to 7-3. So with the bases juiced, two outs and a four-run deficit, the game gets suspended due to heavy rains and bad field conditions. The game would resume 24 hours later. However, the fields did not improve, and the game was ruled a final on Saturday. The game reverted to the end of the eighth inning, and Ty Young was not credited with a game played or a walk, as the 15th-ranked Cardinals lost 7-1.
* GAMECHANGER: A few weeks back, the Los Angeles Clippers came to Philly. They trailed the Sixers late in the game, and it wasn't Chris Paul that started the comeback, it wasn't Blake Griffin that started the comeback, it was former Sixer Reggie Evans, who ignited the Clippers with his gritty play. Flash forward to Saturday, February 18. The California (PA) Vulcans are trailing Fairmont State 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth of a seven-inning game. The Vulcans offense had just two hits on the day, and needed some 5-hour energy. After a one-out single, Giovanni Morales (St. Joseph's Prep) was summoned to pinch-run. He promptly stole second base, then third base, and would eventually score the tying run, as his team scored once more in the frame, and went on to win 3-2.
