La Salle's 1968-69 Season . . .

Return to TedSilary.com Home Page

In the 1968-69 season, La Salle College, coached by all-time star Tom Gola, went 23-1
with a lineup featuring four players who would go on to perform in the NBA and/or ABA.
Unfortunately, the Explorers were on probation due to the transgressions of a previous
coach and could not compete in the NCAA tournament.
La Salle that season averaged 89 points thanks in large part to the future pros: Ken Durrett
(20.0), Larry Cannon (18.9, Lincoln), Bernie Williams (18.4) and Roland "Fatty" Taylor
(11.5). Stan Wlodarczyk, Ed Szczesny and Fran Dunphy (Malvern) were also in the
rotation. Click here for full stats.
The season ended, in subdued fashion, with a game at West Chester.
This column, by Sandy Grady, appeared in the long-gone Bulletin . . . and was immediately
placed in my scrapbook. I hope you enjoy it.
