Judge 63, Wood 50

The end of the season has finally come to an end for the Vikings. I was thinking to myself as I was watching the JV game, boy it would be great if the Vikes could play spoiler today and knock off Judge’s playoff hopes. I mean after their long and tough season, wouldn’t it be great to end on such a high note? Well, I would soon find out shortly that I was just dreaming and Judge was determined,  and on a mission to make the playoffs. Right from the opening tip off there was no question which was the better team this afternoon. The Crusaders jump out to an early 11-4 lead. Playing a huge role for Judge early was senior Andrew Vose, who early on was having his way with Wood defenders. He was getting open shots down low in the paint, and he was also a force on the glass as well. Wood was having some difficulty guarding him. He also did a nice job defensively. Vose finished the game with 16 points, and 5 boards. After Judge jumped out to its early lead, coach Joe Sette called a quick timeout to reorganize his men. Right out of the timeout Wood went on a nice little 4-0 run. Eric Loughnane (8 points) scored a quick basket, and hit two foul shots to cut the Crusaders’ lead to 11-8.  I thought Wood played pretty hard in the 1st quarter. The score after one was 15-10 Judge.

Second quarter begins, and this is where Judge pretty much took over the contest. I don’t know what was going on with Wood. There were missed defensive assignments, sloppy fouls, and there seemed to be a lack of energy. Maybe they stayed up too late from last night’s Winter Formal. I don’t know. Even when the Vikings had their chances they just couldn’t execute. The score at half was 33-18 Judge.
Halftime is here so myself and Wood’s manager Mike Cleighton are a bit so hungry so we decide to go downstairs and get a bite to eat. I specifically wanted some soft pretzels. So we make our way downstairs and we find out there is absolutely nothing left to eat except soda and some candy. So Mike said there was some vending machines upstairs where you come into the gym. So we both make our way upstairs, walk across the court and I notice the man who runs this website is perched up in the balcony. So, we finally get to the machines and lo’ and behold there not working. Great!!!! Just what I need!! So then some guy said to us there are vending machines downstairs in the cafeteria. I was like OK, let’s go. So here we go again looking for some food. We get downstairs, and guess what!!! The machines are out of order except the ice cream machine. Can’t get a break here. So Mike spots with his eyes a golden opportunity for some food. On the tables right in front of us there were some pretzels, and chips. Naturally, both of us being hungry, we took some. Anyway to make a long story short, I did end up getting a Baby Ruth bar, but I really wanted that soft pretzel.

Third quarter is here and Judge quickly jumps out of the gate. Matt McLaughlin (7 points) hit a jump shot in the opening minute, which was then quickly followed up by three pointer from Jim DiLisio (13 points). At the 7:11 mark of the third a scary moment happened for Judge. Their leading scorer on the contest, Andrew Vose, went down with an apparent ankle injury. Fortunately, he would return to start the fourth. The Vikings however did do some good things today. One thing I was really impressed with was their defensive play on Bob Zanneo. The Vikes held Zanneo to only 9 points the whole game. This is impressive given the fact that he is one of the Catholic League's leading scorers. This is not the first time this year the Vikings held him to under ten points. In the first match up between these two teams, Wood held Zanneo to a mere three points. So I guess Wood knows what Zanneo’s weaknesses are. The score after three was 46-31 Judge.
Okay time for the fourth quarter. Wood could have easily just let down and not played hard in the fourth, but they didn’t. They kept battling and showed pride in who they are. Remember everyone, Judge had 21-point lead at one point during this game and Wood cut the lead down to ten on a few occasions. They never gave up, which is what I like to see in a team. This being Dan Comas’ last high school game I thought he played pretty well. Despite having a lackluster first half. Dan finished with 17 points, and 7 boards. It was good to see Dan finish strong. Another nice thing to see was the play of Tim Fahy. Tim was in a bit of funk scoring wise, but today he showed who he really is. Tim had a total of 17 points, and 5 boards. Only if they hit their foul shots today. Wood missed a total of 12 shots. Just maybe if they made some of them today’s outcome would have been different. Yes, Judge would hang on for the win, but the Vikings didn’t go down without a fight  Just like they have doing all year long. It’s time to look forward to next year. I honestly believe this team is going to be good. I mean they had so much young talent on the team, and they're only going to get better. If their JV team is any consideration of what that the future may entail, then the Wood basketball program will be looking good for the next few years. The JV squad only had two losses the whole year, and the majority of those players were also on varsity. So things can only get better, I guess. I had a lot of fun covering the team this year, I and would like to thank Ted Silary for giving me the opportunity to cover them. I will certainly be back next year, you can count on that. Hopefully the girls squad will bring us a championship this year!! Well, baseball season is less than a month away, and I’m looking forward too it.

Other scorers for Wood: Joe Getz ( 5 points), and Fran “Doc” Dougherty ( 3 points) For Judge: Tom Ryan ( 10 points), Josh Jaskowiak ( 6 points), and Ryan Langdon ( 2 points).

Ryan 53, Wood 36

Well tonight at Wood it was senior night which is always a special event. Tonight was the last time Dan Comas (16 points, 7 boards) and Eric Loughnane (2 points), will step onto their home court to play a game. It was definitely a special night for sure. Wood also honored senior Mike Novey, who couldn’t be in attendance due to shoulder surgery, and a unsung hero of the Wood basketball family senior manager Mike Cleighton. Mike has done a marvelous job as manager over the last four years. He hasn’t missed a single game, which is pretty impressive. That was nice to see them honor Mike. I tell you right now tonight was just not the Vikings' night. It seems like I’ve been saying that all year. But to be honest with you, Wood really didn’t stand a chance tonight. The Raiders came out ready to play. Ryan wasted no time right from the opening tipoff dictating the play of this game. They made their first three shots, and they just seemed more determined. Wood looked OK early. They were hitting some shots early in the first quarter. Comas was getting some looks, and he drawing fouls which was a good sign. I don’t know what happened, but halfway through the first quarter the score was 9-5 Ryan. Then all of a sudden both teams went ice cold from the field. No one could hit a shot, or a three throw for that matter. So the score after one was 9-5 Ryan. Another thrilling quarter of basketball!!!!
Second quarter arrives and pretty much the same as the first. Strong defensive basketball from both teams, although turnovers were in abundance. I liked the way senior Tom Marshall (7 points, 10 boards) played tonight. For a pretty tall kid, he can move pretty swiftly up and down the court. He has a nice mid-range game, and he can certainly rebound the ball. The score at half was 20-14 Ryan. Halftime is here, and Vikings dance team does a nice performance again. Nothing else special really happened. So let's go to the third shall we.

Third quarter is here, and this is where Andrew Rogers (19 points, 3 boards) pretty much took over the game. This kid does it all, plain and simple. He can shoot the daylights out of the ball. He plays stellar defense. He causes multiple turnovers, quick as lightning, and can even rebound the ball a little. Hands down he is Ryan’s best player. He is a big reason why Ryan is where they are in the standings. If the Raiders want to go far in the playoffs, they need games like this from Rogers every night, and from what I’ve seen from him this year he is certainly very capable of doing that. Anyway the score after three was 38-25 Ryan.

Fourth quarter begins, and to be honest with you I was getting ticked off. I honestly thought Wood could have come out tonight and showed some effort. It just seemed like there was no sense of urgency tonight. Yeah, I know they're not making the playoffs this year, and the season has been long, but it was their last home game. I would have liked to seen a better effort, but what are you going to do. Maybe their minds were focused on tomorrow’s winter formal, who knows? Anyway the remainder of the fourth was pretty much a Raider onslaught, plain and simple. The Vikes simply just got outplayed tonight. But hey look at the bright side, one more game to go, Sunday at Judge. Shout out to the all the members of the Lady Vikings basketball squad (21-2 overall) in attendance tonight. These girls know how to play ball. Their only two losses came to nationally ranked teams, Nos. 1 and 6 I think. Undefeated in Northern division play. So everyone get out go see these girls play their last home game of the year Tuesday night at 7:30 against Ryan. Other scorers for Wood: Joe Getz (9 points), Tim Fahy (4 points, 4 boards), Fran “Doc” Dougherty (2 points, 3 boards), and Sean “Smack’ McCartney (3 points). For Ryan : Rus Slawter (2 points), Eric Jann (6 points), Chris Wilk (13 points), and Anthony Keiter (6 points).
Player of the Game- Andrew Rogers

Dougherty 50, Wood 49

I’m telling you right now this one is going to sting for a while. Seems like I’m always saying this, but this team always manages to lose by less then three points, with the exception of a few blowouts. Let’s get to the game!!! For once the Vikings came out ready to play. Right from the beginning I could tell Dan Comas was going to have a special night. The Vikings got him the ball early and often. When that happens he starts to get into an early groove and builds confidence. Dougherty really had no answer for him the whole night. Sean Williams (11 points, 6 boards), and Brandon Savage (9 points, 5 boards) tried to cover Dan. They had some success early in the first half, holding Dan to 9 points, but Dan went off for 17 points in the second half for a total of 26. Dan also pulled down 9 boards, plus he had 4 nice blocks early in the game. I was happy to see Dan finally get back to the typical “Dan Comas game”. 20 points 10 boards. The Vikings had a 12-8 lead after the first quarter of play.
Second quarter began and the Cardinals started to find their groove. They started to find their shot, they were getting to the foul line, and applying some good defensive pressure on Wood. The Cardinals got their first lead of the contest at the 4:25 mark of the second on a nice steal from the Brandon Wims (8 points), who rushed downcourt for the easy layup. On the Cardinals' next possession, Wims was fouled and made both of his shots from the line. I liked what I saw out of this kid tonight. He began the season on North Catholic's roster, then transferred! He seemed to give the Cardinals the energy they needed of the bench. That was good to see. Tim Fahy ( 8 points) then hit a three with 15 seconds to go to extend Wood’s lead to 26-24. The score at half was deadlocked at 26 apiece.

Halftime was here, and Dougherty’s cheerleaders performed a nice dance routine for the audience. I was busy texting updates to loyal fan and Vikings legend Fran McGlinn. Anyway not much else occurred, so let's get onto the third, shall we?

Third quarter: we had frantic action back and forth. Each team was trading off shots left and right at will. I thought it was pretty fun to watch. The Vikings were hanging right with the Cardinals the whole time. Like I’ve said plenty of times before these boys don’t quit, they play hard for the full 32 minutes and overtime when needed. Every time I watch this team, especially in the last two weeks, Fran “Doc” Dougherty continues to impress. This kid is growing and maturing with every game he plays at the varsity level. I really think Doc benefits from having such a great role model, and teacher in fellow big man Dan Comas. Early in the season Doc seemed kind of lost out there. Maybe it was just nerves, but whatever he has done in the last two weeks or so I hope he keeps it up. Remember Fran is only a sophomore. I think if he bulks up a bit, he’ll be a dominant force for the next two years. I’m really serious about this, I truly think he is going to be very good player. The score after three was 40-39 Dougherty.

Here we go again!! Down by one point to start the fourth. Every game seems to be like this. I’m just going to flash forward to 1:17 to go in the fourth. Dougherty is down by one, and they get a huge basket from Sean Williams to take the one point lead. Now with 33.4 seconds to go Brandon Savage is at the line shooting for a chance at the two-point lead. He shoot the ball and misses, Wood ball. Joe Sette calls a quick timeout to reorganize his troops. Wood draws up a play for Comas in the low post. Seconds are ticking off the clock, ball goes down low to Dan. He goes up for the shot, and he gets hacked, ball is stripped, no call at all, Dougherty calls a timeout. Dan and the coaching staff couldn’t believe it. That would have sent Dan to the line shooting two for a chance at the lead. Instead Dougherty has time to draw up a play. After the timeout Wood quickly fouls. Forcing Dougherty to shoot two shots. They miss both shots, Wood gets the rebound and quickly calls a timeout. Now with 2.8 seconds to go Brian O’Grady heaves a pass to Comas at the top of key for a chance at win, but the Cardinals bat the ball down. Game over!!!! Another tough one on the chin for the Vikings. They should have won this game. They had plenty of opportunities the whole night. Only if they called that foul. I still can’t believe it. I don’t want to blame refs, but that was a foul. Even all the people around me said it was. But what can you do. Anyway up next for the Vikings is Friday night against Ryan. This is senior night so it should be really special. Hope everyone can get out and support our boys!! Other scorers for Wood: Sean “Smack” McCartney (3 points, 4 boards), and Eric Loughnane (3 points). For Dougherty: Ryan Fitch (7 points), Jahkeem Bogans (3 points, 3 boards), Isiah Mason (6 points), and Zaahir Allen (8 points).

La Salle 45, Wood 43 (OT)
Wow!!!! Where do I begin. This by far was the game of night, maybe the game of the year. If you were not here tonight I feel sorry for you because you missed a classic. I just had this weird feeling all week that this game was going to be special, and boy it was. The game got started a tad bit late because the JV game went into overtime; Wood also lost. OK, let's get to the game, shall we. Right from the start you could tell this game was going to be a low-scoring, evenly-matched contest. Neither team scored a basket for the first 2 minutes. Frank Pierson (19 points, including 5 threeballs) broke the 0-0 affair with a three. Fran “Doc” Dougherty (8 points) quickly responded for Wood with a trey. I thought Wood was playing La Salle very well defensively throughout the first half. It was obvious that the Vikings were focusing mainly on C.J. Aiken (11 points, 6 boards, and 6 blocks). Aiken didn’t seem comfortable out there. He got into some early foul trouble, and had some difficulty at times covering Comas. But I’ll tell you right now when the Explorers needed a big defensive stop, Aiken was there to answer the call. This kid is going to be a dominant force. I honestly couldn’t believe some of the blocks he had tonight. He would just come out of nowhere and absolutely annihilate the ball. The crowd's reaction was priceless. He also had a tremendous dunk tonight, which almost bought the roof down. The score after one was a mere 11-11.
Second quarter arrives and we got the same as the first, no scoring whatsoever. Good hard defensive basketball, just what Wood fans like. OK, well maybe not. I thought Sean “Smack” McCartney had a solid first half of play. He did a nice job defensively. I personally thought he was getting hacked all night. Sean had 8 points in the first half, including two threeballs. Unfortunately, for Sean they would be the only points he would score all night. The score at half was 18-17 Wood. We’ve got ourselves a high-scoring game here, eh!

Halftime is here and we have our first performance from the Vikings Dance Team. The girls look good out there tonight. They did a nice dance routine which the Wood faithful went nuts over. One thing that bugs me is that darn sound system in the North Gym. It’s absolutely terrible. Once again you could barely hear the music, but the girls still managed to pull it off. As I watching this I’m on the cell talking to former Vikings legend basketball player Fran McGlinn, who unfortunately could attend tonight because he’s up at Penn State. I was giving Fran updates the whole night long, especially late in the game which was crazy, but we will get to that in a bit.
Third quarter: Vikings come out hitting their first two shots. Actually Comas had the first 5 points of the quarter for Wood. Dan had a slow first half, but boy did he pick things up down the stretch. I think the slow start was due to some foul trouble, and the defensive play of Aiken. Probably the highlight of the night for Dan was a two-hand dunk right over Matt “Looks Like I Go Tanning” Crozier. The building absolutely erupted in euphoria. Ah, man, I was going nuts. That was great to see. Back and forth action, up and down the court. This was the theme the whole night. Let’s just flash forward a few minutes to the beginning of the 4th.

The tension between the Wood faithful and the La Salle kids is at a fever pitch. To put it plain and simple, these two school do not like each other at all. There were chants back and forth between each student section. The atmosphere in the North Gym tonight was awesome. Absolutely awesome!! Wood students were terrific. I’m going to flash forward to two minutes left in the fourth. The score is 35-32 Explorers. At this point, I’m a nervous wreck. My heart is beating ferociously, I’m sweating like a pig because its so darn hot in that gym, and my pencils are flying everywhere. At 1:55 my boy Fran Doc hits a three ball to tie up the score at 35 apiece. Building goes nuts!! The score remains the same for the rest of the fourth. La Salle and Wood each had multiple opportunities down the stretch to win this game. OK, 0.4 seconds to go. Wood ball. The Vikings got a shot to win the game. Fran Doc throws a halfcourt heave to Comas. Comas catches, spins and tries a fadeaway shot at the buzzer . . . rims in and out. Now at this point the first thing that goes through my head is March 28, 1992. Does that ring a bell for anyone? Well, if you don’t remember it was Grant Hill’s halfcourt heave to Christian Laettner. He catches it, spins, shoots, goes in. Duke beats Kentucky 104-103 in the East Regional Finals. That game by the way was held at the Spectrum. Anyway back to tonight’s game. Overtime is here and I’m giving play by play action to Fran McGlinn, who is 100-plus miles away, who is then relaying the information to other former Wood kids up at PSU. La Salle starts off hot hitting their first few shots. Wood responds with shots of their own. A few more Explorer shots, and a Wood turnover and La Salle is up by a basket. The Vikings were forced to foul with every La Salle possession. The only thing LaSalle needs to do for the win is to hit their foul shots. But you know what? They didn’t! They missed four straight shots down stretch. OK, here’s the situation: 43-41 La Salle. Wood's Eric Loughnane (5 points) is at the line shooting two for a chance to tie up the game. The crowd gets real quiet, except for the La Salle kids. Shot goes up and swoosh its good. Only down by one. Second shot goes up, a chance for a tie . . . clank, he misses. Comas then swats the ball at out of bounds. La Salle ball. 10.8 seconds to go. Timeout La Salle. Joe Migliarese (2 points) then inbounds the ball to Crozier. He is then swarmed by players, and lo’ and behold, Brian O’Grady (1 point) comes away with the ball and is fouled. Now at this point everybody is an euphoric state. I’m going crazy, I still got Fran on the phone, and I’m trying to get all the stats down. O’Grady at the line, shooting two for the lead. First shot goes up and swoosh, its good. We're now deadlocked at 43. Next shot goes up, and he misses. La Salle gets the rebound and quickly calls a timeout. Timeout is over. Migliarese inbounds to Pierson. He quickly dribbles up the sideline, time is ticking 4, 3, 2, 1, and then a whistle. No one in the building knew why the whistle blew. Not even both benches knew. I think Pierson was pushed out of bounds right at the scorers' table. I’m still not sure what happened. Anyway, whatever it was, there was 0.5 showing in OT. Migliarese is about to inbound the ball again. Wait, another whistle. I’m thinking to myself, "What could this be?" The refs get together and chat amongst themselves, and they decide to put more time back on the clock. So now instead of 0.5 seconds its 0.9 seconds. The Wood stands erupt in anger. So, here we go, 0.9 seconds to go. Migliarese throws the ball to Crozier. He turns and shoots. Ball goes off the backboard, hits the front part of the rim, and trickles into the net. Ballgame!!! LaSalle wins!!! The La Salle kids storm the court and mob the team. Wood kids are left in a state of shock. I’m not making any excuses but I could have sworn that he didn’t get that shot off in time. Comas agrees with me as well; he made a dash straight to the ref after the shot went in to plead his case. Those extra tenths of a second made the difference. I couldn’t believe it, kids couldn’t believe it, Fran McGlinn couldn’t believe it. What a terrible way to end such a terrific game. Tough one. This one will sting for a while. I've got to give Wood credit. They never gave up when things were looking bleak. They kept plugging away and battling. One thing this team has is heart and pride, which is great to see. Up next for the Vikings is Monday night at Dougherty. Should be a good game. Other scorers for Wood: Joe Getz (2 points), and for La Salle, Todd Stokley (2 points).
Player of the Game- Fran Dougherty. Even though his team lost, he stepped his game up hitting big shots, and grabbing big rebounds.

CATHOLIC NORTH

North 74, Wood 45
First off I just want to say, that I did not steal any material from previous Lancer Lowdown reports. I just want to clear my name from that. Anyway, to be straight up honest with you Wood had no chance from the opening tip. There is just a special aura that goes with playing in the legendary Pit. I think the Vikings were a bit intimidated. The North fans sure did provide the Falcons with the extra boost they needed tonight.  North opened up the game on a 16-3 run. Wood looked so lost out there. They had no idea what just hit them. North was running up the court all night long. They are so much bigger, faster, and stronger than Wood. Lenny Young (18 points, 2 boards) was scoring at will. Wood couldn’t guard him if their life depended on it. Their transitional defense was pathetic at times. I’m not going to lie, I tell it how I see it. The score after one was 24-12 North.
Second quarter begins and Wood gets a few quick baskets. Things were looking positive after their nightmarish 1st. Dan Comas (13 points, 9 boards) was drawing fouls and getting to the line. Unfortunately for Dan, the North faithful played an important role in Dan's free throw struggles. Anyway, I thought Dan played OK. There were times he was getting pushed around by Shahid Paulhill ( 8 points, 6 boards) but for the most part he held his ground. With about 58 seconds to go in the 1st half, Lenny Young crossed up Sean “Smack” McCartney, Young went one way, Sean the other, that got a huge rise from the North students. The score at half was 39-27 North.
Nothing special happened at halftime, so on to the third quarter. Wood starts out with a threeball from junior Tim Fahy ( 11 points). The Vikings went on a little 4-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to 39-31, but would that change in a heartbeat. The Falcons went on a 17-0 run to extend their lead  to 56-31. Sitting in the stands watching this I felt really bad  for those boys. They just got outplayed, and were not prepared for what North threw at them. Freshman Joe Getz (10 points, 2 boards) finally broke the run with a layup, then a quick steal on the inbound, and finished for another two. I was happy to see Joe play tonight. He has been struggling a bit lately, and it was good to see him get ample playing time. The score after three was 58-35 North.
Fourth quarter arrives and by now North has all of its starters out, and Wood still couldn’t stop North’s bench, you can pretty much guess what happened from here on out. Total Falcon domination, but what can you say. There will be games like this. Let me just say, I have a confession I have to make. The last Wood vs. North report I did, I said North was very beatable. Well, I was completely wrong. This team can play ball. What I like about them the most is their energy and ball control. It’s tremendous. I  really like watching them play. Other scorers for Wood: Scott Adkins (2 points), Fran “Doc” Dougherty (2 points, 2 boards),and Eric Loughnane (7 points). For North: Velton Jones (4 points, 3 boards), Woody Redding (13 points, 3 boards, 4 dimes), Mike Terry (6 points), Bob Makor (10 points, 7 boards), Kevin O’Neil (2 points, 3 boards), Pete Sellecchia (7 points), and Rakeem Christmas ( 6 points). Up next for the Vikings is La Salle on Friday night, at Wood. We did have some celebrities in the Pit tonight. Of course the one and only Puck. Hey Puck, I’m sorry I couldn’t stay after to talk, I had to run. Also, we had Temple coach Fran Dunphy in attendance, and the members of the Lady Vikings basketball team.
Player of the Game- Lenny Young.

Wood 52, Conwell-Egan 41
Two in a row, baby!!!!! Break up the Vikings!! OK, well maybe not. I really think Dan Comas (13 points, 9 boards) set the tone of the game early. Dan had three big defensive rebounds about a minute and a half into the game. Those rebounds were huge because it told Egan that Wood was ready to play and make a game out of this, not like the last contest between these two teams. If you recall Egan completely dominated Wood throughout the game. That was definitely not the case tonight. If you like defensive, gritty basketball the 1st half was your type of game. No one scored a basket for about the first two minutes of the game. It was a slow tempo, and I think that played right into the hands of Wood. They never really let Egan get their running legs going. Egan seemed confused out there at times. They definitely wanted to establish the fast brea -- there was no question about that -- but there was just nowhere to run. Anyway the score after one was 12-9 Wood.
I was impressed with the play once again tonight of junior guard Tim Fahy. Coming off a 20-point performance Monday against McDevitt I was expecting a letdown, but boy was I wrong. Tim came out firing the three as always. Knocking down all his shots. Played solid defense against Rashad Little ( 12 points). Tim finished the night with 19 points and 4 boards. Tim definitely has to keep this play up especially with the departure of Joe Huebner, who left the team earlier in the week by his own choice. Egan buckled down defensively late in the second quarter especially with the help of  Hayk “I still can’t pronounce your name” Gyokchyan. Hayk seemed a bit off tonight. He did have 15 points, and 7 boards, but he just didn’t seem comfortable out there. Maybe it was because of Comas’ defense, or his foul trouble, I don’t know. He did have 4 massive blocks, though. I thought the referees picked on Egan a bit. I mean, I’m not complaining, but there were some very questionable calls. Anyway the score at half was knotted up at 16 apiece. What a great offensive 1st half that was, eh???
Halftime is here, and the Conwell-Egan cheerleaders performed a nice dance routine. Although, the Wood girls would totally own them in a dance-off competition. Nothing against the girls, but they look liked they were 7 years old. Hey, at least the out there. After that there was a shooting contest. Make one shot you get a soda, make another you get a hot dog, then you have one shot at half-court for a chance to win $25. No one came close.
Third quarter: nothing like the first two. I don’t know what got into these teams but the shots were flying, back and forth action, offense galore. Finally!!!! Jonas Skovdal (3 points), who killed Wood last game, was really a non- factor tonight. Once again strong defensive play from Wood and foul trouble for Skovdal. Although his only basket did come on a very nice dunk. The score after three was 36-30 Wood.
Fourth quarter begins with Egan hitting a three ball to cut the lead to three, but Eric Loughnane (6 points) quickly responded with a three of his own. That was nice to see. It showed Egan anything you can do, I can do better. Wood continued its strong play, and eventually pulled away late, with Egan forced to foul. Tim Fahy hit four key foul shots down the stretch to seal the win for the Vikings. It seems like they're finally starting to gel as a team. It may be too late, but you never know. Other scorers for Wood: Sean “Smack” McCartney (7 points, 3 boards), Brian O’Grady (2 points, 5 boards), and Fran “Doc” Dougherty (5 points, including a rare threeball.) Other scorers for the Eagles: Andrew Schaefer (3 points), Shayne Bonner (2 points), and Matt Engle (6 points). We had some prominent Wood people in the crowd tonight. Varsity soccer coach Joe Krantz, my homeroom teacher and rabid St. Joe’s fan Mr. Boyle, and Mr.Duffy. Along with Wood quarterback Mike Cattolico. Up next for the Vikings is Monday night against North at the legendary pit. That should be a lot of   fun. It’s a crucial game for Wood.
I had the pleasure tonight of meeting Mr. Rich Papirio. Mr. Papirio is the assistant AD at Egan, head coach of the varsity baseball squad, and the announcer at basketball games. He made my job very easy tonight. Mr. Papirio just happened to be my Dad’s baseball coach at North Catholic 34 years ago. My Dad says and I agree that he is the absolute nicest guy anyone could ever meet. He is a real class act, and Egan is lucky to have him.
Player of the Game- Once again I got to give it to my boy Tim Fahy.

Yes, everyone, you are reading that score right. Wood has finally won a game in Northern Division play. You have no idea how happy I am right now. Thank God because, quite frankly, I was getting fed up with their play. I'll tell you right now it wasn’t easy tonight. McDevitt sure showed a ton of heart out there. They came out hitting a few baskets. Senior Pat Doyle  (6 points, 2 boards) made his presence known early, hitting the Lancers' first three shots. Wood quickly responded with some nice baskets of their own. Leading the way for the Vikings was junior guard Tim Fahy. Tim had a total of 20 points, including 4 threeballs. Tim is kind of an unsung hero for Wood. The kid is a real smart basketball player. He’s quick, feisty defensively, and is quickly turning into a three-point specialist. I just don’t get why opposing teams just leave him wide open. When Tim is on, which is pretty much every night, he’s a force. I was happy to see Tim play so well tonight. I can’t forget about the play of junior forward Sean “Smack” McCartney. Quietly, Sean played a very nice game. He had a total of 16 points and 3 boards. I was glad he played well, especially because it was against McDevitt. If  you remember last game Sean had a really rough night. Not only on the court, but from the fans as well. It was pretty cool to see him shut up his critics a bit. I thought McDevitt controlled the play in the 1st quarter. They just seemed more hungry for the ball especially James Williams ( 12 points, 10 boards). The score after one was 17-12 McDevitt.
Second quarter began and things didn’t change much. Wood seemed sluggish, slow and sloppy throughout the 1st half. Missed defensive assignments were prevalent. I don’t know how there was no urgency on Wood’s part. The Lancers controlled the play and led at the ha;f, 26-21.
Halftime is here, and lo’ and behold, look what we have. Yes, everyone the cheerleaders. I knew at that point it was our night when the cheerleaders arrived. They did a very nice performance that the Wood faithful greatly appreciated. I was impressed that they did it with very little music. (Sound system wasn’t working in the gym, so they used a boom box that you could barely hear). Anyway, nice job girls.
Third quarter arrived, and you could see right from the beginning that the Vikings had a different attitude toward the game. They seemed more aggressive, there was better communication, and they had more energy. Dan Comas (11 points, 8 points, 4 blocks, 3 dimes) played an OK game tonight. He wasn’t his dominant self, but he made the best out of what McDevitt was giving him. He made his foul shots late to seal it, though. Wood chipped the lead to one. It was 36-35 after three.

Fourth quarter is here, and the Vikings take over. Quick threeball from Tim Fahy, and Wood has the lead. They would never look back from there. McDevitt did close the lead to one, but a nice three-point play from Fahy would help seal the win. Other scorers for Wood: Joe Huebner (3 points, 3 boards), Eric Loughnane (3 points, 5 boards), and Brian O’Grady (2 points, 3 boards). For McDevitt: Matt Davis (7 points), R.P. Boyle (4 points), Matt Shervin (4 points), Dan Drennen (12 points), Courtney Havens-Dobbs, and Linburg Green each had 2 points. Shoutout to the Wood fans once again for a great turnout. PCL Blue MVP Bob DeLucas was in attendance, along with some other members of Wood Football. I feel like I should mention this. Big props go to the Lady Vikings basketball team, who this weekend went 3-0 in the Cougar Classic Tournament in Cherry Hill, NJ. They are an incredible 14-1 overall and undefeated in Northern Division play. Way to go, girls!!! Next up for the guys is Egan Friday night, at Egan 7:30. Should be interesting how they will guard Hayk Gyokchyan.  It’s exam week at Wood, so good luck to everyone.
Player of the Game- Tim Fahy.

CATHOLIC NORTH

Judge 60, Wood 52
You'd think when you hold the Catholic League's leading scorer, Bob Zanneo, to only three points the whole game -- yes, everyone THREE STINKIN’ POINTS -- you'd have a good shot to win the game. But no this is Wood. The team that always seems to find a way to lose. Yes, everyone it happened again. The incredible thing is that all of Zanneo’s three points came from the foul line. The Vikings held him scoreless from the field all night. Not to mention only 1 point in the first half. Hats off to Sean McCartney (9 points) and Joe Huebner (5 points) for defending him all night. They both did an outstanding job. Zanneo just never seemed comfortable. He was rarely open for a shots, and didn’t see many looks, when he did have a look, he missed. Although he did have a very nice block. Things started out well for the Vikings. Tim Fahy ( 9 points, 5 boards) opened up the contest hitting two threeballs. At one point they had an 11-6 lead. Things were looking good. I couldn’t believe it. Then Judge went on a nice run of their own to pull within three. Tom Ryan (17 points, 7 boards) hit a threeball to end the quarter. The score after one was 16-14 Wood.
The second quarter begins, and we have pretty much the same as the first. Evenly matched play from both teams. Each team trading off baskets. It was pretty even. I was really impressed with the play of senior center Andrew Vose. This kid can do it all. He runs the floor, has a nice touch outside the paint, can rebound, knows how to dish out the rock, plays solid defense. Vose had 19 points, and 5 boards. With Dan Comas getting into some early foul trouble, Wood put in Fran Dougherty (2 points, 4 boards). I love the way Fran plays, but Vose’s experience and size got the better of Fran. Vose took full advantage of Doc’s inexperience. Doc’s young and he will get better and stronger as he matures as a basketball player.  I was talking to Dan after the game, and he couldn’t believe how physical Vose is down low. Dan said he was really tentative to do anything against Vose because of his fouls. That would explain why Dan only had 2 points in the 1st half. The score at half was 26-21 Judge.
Halftime is here. Nothing special was going on. Once again the cheerleaders/dance squad was M.I.A. Anyway, getting back to Comas. Dan was pretty quiet in the 1st half, but that would change in the 2nd. Overall Dan had 18 points, and 5 boards. But the astonishing thing is Dan went 12-13 from the line. That’s incredible. I can’t remember the last time Dan got to the line that often. I thought Wood battled hard throughout the third. I mean I give them credit they were only down by 1 at the end of the quarter, 37-36.
The first four minutes of the fourth was the same thing all night. Evenly matched play. But things started to unravel and fall apart late for the Vikings. With Tim Fahy fouling out late and Comas in foul trouble, Wood was forced to press a little bit. That cost them. Once the Crusaders got a four-point they never look backed. Wood was forced to foul, and Judge hit their foul shots. Funny thing is that it seemed like the last 55 seconds of the game was an eternity. I’m telling you that last minute took about 15 minutes to finish. Oh, my gosh, foul after foul, foul shot after foul shot, timeouts. Crowd was kind of restless. Well, the student section was. Speaking of the student section, a shoutout to everyone who showed up tonight. I was getting worried when the game started and Wood section was half empty, but that quickly changed. This team just can't find a way to win. One thing I’ve noticed covering this team is, they don’t have a balanced scoring attack. When someone is having a great game, there is no one to complement him. That’s frustrating as a team. I can’t question this team's determination to play ball. They certainly have the enthusiasm, with the exception of the Ryan game, which in my opinion was a pathetic effort on Wood’s part, but that’s a story for a different day. Other scorers for Wood were: Scott Adkins (2 points, and Eric Loughnane (7 points). For Judge:  Matt McLaughlin (9 points), and Jim DiLisio (12 points, 7 boards). Maybe they will get their first division win on MLK day against McDevitt. If you remember, Wood lost to McDevitt in December, 46-42. This time the game is our gym. This should be a good match up. Could this be the game???? We’ll find out.

Ryan 60, Wood 45

Well everyone, I have bad news to report from Academy Road today. Yes, everyone, Wood lost another game, dropping them to 7-9 overall and 0-6 in division play. You know I actually thought Wood might win this game. They came out strong, hitting there first couple shots from the field. Junior Sean “Smack” McCartney (6 points, 2 boards) got into the action hitting Wood’s first two shots. The Vikings had a nice 11-6 lead early in the 1st quarter. Boy, would that change in a heartbeat. The Raiders then went on a nice run of their own. Leading the way for them was senior Chris Wilk (15 points). Wilk had a very nice game, knocking down 2 threeballs in the1st quarter. He was definitely a force with his perimeter  shooting. Mike Colon (7 points) also had a nice contribution off the bench for the Raiders. The score after one was 14-14.
Things were looking okay for Wood after one. Despite the fact that Dan Comas (13 points, 7 boards, 3 assists) was getting pushed around, and that they couldn’t guard Chris Wilk if their life depended on it. Anyway, Ryan opened up the 2nd quarter going off on a nice 8-0 run. From that point on the game was all Ryan’s. The Vikings just never seemed into the game today. They weren’t communicating well, there were missed defensive assignments, and Comas wasn’t in a rhythm. I was really impressed with the play of Raiders guard Andrew Rogers (14 points, 4 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal). This kid is so quick and athletic. I mean some of the passes he made today were unbelievable. At times he would just blow straight by the Wood defender. I definitely see why he runs the show for Ryan. The score at half was 28-23 Ryan. Halftime arrives and I decide I want a nice hot dog. So I go to get one, and I run into the man who runs this website. I had a nice chat with Ted. I also see Wood’s girls basketball star Rosie Tarnowski, who by the way is committed to play at Washington State next year.
Third quarter arrives and it all goes downhill for Wood. Turnovers, stupid fouls and miscommunication plagued the Vikings all day. Ryan basically pulled away from this game late in the third quarter. Senior Tom Marshall (13 points, 4 boards, 2 assists) hit a buzzer-beating three at the end of the quarter to extend their lead to 10.
Fourth quarter arrives and to be honest with you I was getting bored, and frustrated with what I was seeing. Wood has so much talent, and it's frustrating to see  them lose. I have been to every game this year (except the Wildwood tourney) and I really feel like they're not as bad as their record indicates. They have the talent, I just don’t know if they have the size and experience. I feel for Comas, Huebner, and Loughnane. This is their senior year. It’s supposed to be fun for them. From what I see and what I’m hearing it doesn’t look like they are having fun. Hopefully, this will change. Anyway you can pretty much guess what happened from here. Ryan finishes their blowout, and the Vikings are left searching for answers. Other contributors for Ryan were: Victor Graham (2 points), Rus Slawter (4 points, 2 boards), Eric Jann (5 points, 4 boards), and Anthony Keiter (4 boards, 3 assists.) Others for Wood: Scott Adkins (1 point, 1 assist) Tim Fahy (6 points, 4 boards), Joe Getz (2 points), Joe Huebner (8 points, 2 boards, 2 assists), and Eric Loughnane (7 points, 2 boards, 1 assist). We had some famous Wood people in the crowd this afternoon: varsity boys soccer coach Joe Krantz, and PCL Blue football coach of the year Steve Devlin. Up next for the Wood is Friday night Jan 18th at home versus the Crusaders of Father Judge. Should be a good game!!!

Dougherty 58, Wood 52
Folks, I really want to write about a Wood win tonight, but once again (seems like every game; well actually it IS) I’m reporting about a loss. Okay let's get to the game. The 1st quarter started out very fast. Teams trading off shots left and right. The play was very evenly match throughout the contest. The highlight for the Vikings was the play of their guards. Despite in a losing effort, Junior Tim Fahy (14 points, 2 boards), and senior Eric Loughnane (16 points, 3 boards) had very nice games. For the first time this season Fahy started at guard in place of Joe Getz. Tim just might have proven to Coach Joe Sette that he belongs in the starting lineup. Tim also knocked down 4 threeballs. Eric Loughnane by far had his best game of season. Eric started off slowly from the field, but he pick up his play throughout the second half. If the Vikings can get play like this from their guards every game, I’m sure Coach Sette would be pleased. This is a good sign to see. The score after one was 19-17 Wood.
The second quarter was pretty much the same as the first. I don’t think there was a time in the first half where the lead was more than 2 points for either team. Tonight I was really impressed with the play of senior forward Brandon Savage (14 points, 9 boards, and 3 MONSTER blocks). This kid was a dominant force on the glass. Heck, Dan Comas even said so after the game. “It just seemed like he was getting every offensive rebound tonight.” Indeed he was. Sophomore Zaahir Allen (13 points, 2 boards) was also very impressive. For as young as he is, he showed a lot of composure. He’s definitely not afraid to get into your face, challenge you 1 on1, and he is certainly not afraid to attempt a three. The kid has a bright future. The score at half was 29-27 Dougherty. Halftime arrives and I was expecting either the cheerleaders or the Wood Dance team, but they were nowhere to be found. That was VERY disappointing, I’m not going to lie. Going into half I thought Wood played really well. I was actually surprised they were only down by 2, given the identity of the team they were playing.

Third quarter starts, and from the way the 1st half was I was expecting pretty much the same, and yeah I was right. The third was another exciting, and evenly matched quarter. The Cardinals kept senior center Dan Comas pretty quiet in the 1st half. That started to change midway through the 3rd. Comas (14 points, 7 boards, 3 assists) started to get into a groove. He was drawing fouls, knocking down his free throws, and starting to be a force on the glass. Unfortunately, he wasn’t in that groove all night. Like I’ve said before, it's imperative to get Dan the ball early and often for him to be effective, and that was not the case tonight. The score after three was 41-40 Cardinals.
The fourth quarter, I’m not going to lie was probably the most suspenseful, and questionable quarter of the year. I’ll get to that questionable part in a bit. Wood actually jumps out to an early 45-43 in the fourth. But that quickly dissipated. Once again I know it seems like a recurring thing here but it was evenly matched. Okay, now to that questionable part. With about 2 and half minutes to go in the game, Dougherty takes a shot. Now, the shot hits the back part of the rim, bounces straight up in the air and goes over the backboard. Now, correct me if I’m wrong but shouldn’t that be Wood ball? The ref decides to give the ball to Dougherty. Now, at that moment the Wood bench, coaching staff, and fans (including myself are going nuts) I don’t like to criticize the refs, because they are doing the best they can, but come on. Anyway, Junior Jahkeem Bogans (12 points) goes on to hit a three. Dougherty now leads by two. That was the turning point of the game. Dougherty would never look back from there. Wood was forced to foul late, and senior guard Isiah Mason (14 points, 5 boards) was clutch, and hit his foul shots to seal the win for the Cardinals. Other scorers for Dougherty: Ryan Fitch (2 points), and Sean Williams (3 points). Other scorers for Wood: Sean “Smack” McCartney (5 points, 6 boards). Shoutout to the Wood fans tonight, especially Tyler Giampa. Tyler, you were hilarious tonight. Good job, man. You guys were awesome tonight. Best crowd of the year by far. It was kind of funny, the Wood students were getting into it with the Dougherty kids. Good times!!! Some Wood legends were in the crowd tonight. Former basketball star Fran McGlinn, PCL Blue Division football MVP Bob DeLucas, 1st team All-Catholic lineman Joe Makoid, and Adam Citko and second team All-Catholic DB Shane Miller. Up next for Wood (7-8 overall, 0-5 division) are the Raiders of Archbishop Ryan, Sunday at 2:30 down on Academy Road.
Player of the Game- This is a tough, but I’m giving it to Dougherty’s starting five. 4 out of the 5 had double digit performances.

La Salle 53, Wood 50
Well, it just seems like a recurring them for Wood, losing games that they probably should have won. That was the case once again today. Right from the beginning this was La Salle’s game. The Explorers quickly jumped out to an early lead. Helping to lead the way was senior forward Matt Crozier. Matt played an overall good game. At times he was a force in the paint, and for the most part he was dominant on the glass. He finished with a total of 13 points, 9 boards, and 3 assists. Matt also went 5-7 from the line. The highlight of the 1st quarter was a really nice alley-oop pass from freshman Eddie Joyner-Mitchell (2 points) to sophomore sensation C.J. Aiken (8 points, 5 boards, 3 blocks) to end the 1st quarter of play. The score at the end of one was 14-8 La Salle.

Providing a nice boost off the bench for Wood was senior Joe Huebner. Joe came into the game early in the 2nd quarter. Joe had probably his best overall outing of the year, finishing with 16 points. It was good to see Joe play so well today, given the fact that he is still a bit banged up, and that he didn’t play last game against North (coach's decision). The second quarter saw each team trading off baskets left and right. La Salle has a very interesting player by the name of Jaylen Bond. Bond, only a freshman, played a real solid game. He goes about 6’5 or 6’6. Pretty good size, at times today he was pretty solid off the glass. The future looks bright for La Salle with the likes of Bond, Aiken, and Joyner-Mitchell. Jaylen had a total of 6 points, 6 boards, and 2 blocks. Senior forward Joe Migliarese, who went 3-6 from beyond the arc, finished with a total of 14 points, and 2 boards. This kid was everywhere tonight. Every three ball he made just seemed like it killed Wood’s momentum. Big shots, and crucial times of the game. The score at half was 25-22 La Salle.
The start of the third saw La Salle come out with 7-2 run. Wood quickly responded out of a timeout. Senior center Dan Comas had a typical game for him: 18 points, 8 boards, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. I think he did a pretty solid job overall defending C.J. Aiken. At one point during the third Wood was only down by one point. I give them some credit for staying tough, and battling during the third. The score at the end of three was 37-32 La Salle.
Junior Tim Fahy opened up the fourth quarter hitting a three ball. Tim had 5 points in the contest. The play in the fourth was really close until the end of the game where the Explorers nailed their free throws to seal the game. Other contributors for La Salle were: Junior Tom Cooney (5 points), and senior Frank Pierson (5 points, 3 assists). Other contributors for Wood: freshman Joe Getz (2 points), sophomore Fran Dougherty (2 points; hero of the JV game by hitting a last-second shot to win it), senior Eric Loughnane (7 points, 2 boards, 3 assists) and although sophomore Scott Adkins didn’t score any points I thought he played a very nice game starting at guard.

With this loss the Vikings fall to 7-7 overall, and 0-4 in division play. Up next is Cardinal Dougherty, Friday night, at 8, at Wood. A shoutout to the members of the Lady Vikings basketball team who were in attendance this afternoon. The girls had a very nice win over Notre Dame yesterday, improving their record to 10-1 overall. Keep up the good work, girls!!!
Player of the Game- Joe Migliarese - The kid killed Wood with his three-point ability. Kid played an overall solid game.

North Catholic 54, Wood 51
Well, this is not exactly what the Vikings wanted, to start off the new year. Despite the tough loss there was actually some good that emerged from the game. First off, they actually played like a team tonight. Everybody seemed in sync with each other, and they were feeding off each other's energy. Although they did commit about 15 turnovers. Those turnovers did, however, probably cost them the game.  Another nice thing I witnessed was the play of junior forward Sean McCartney. Sean was on fire to begin the game, knocking down two quick threes to extend Wood’s lead. Sean overall tonight had 17 points, including 3 three-pointers. Despite fouling out late in the fourth, Sean played an excellent game overall. Wood opened up the game with a 6-2 run, but that quickly disappeared with North’s 10-0 run. Helping to lead the charge was senior guard Velton Jones.  Jones who finished with 10 points and 2 boards played an OK game overall. I’m not going to lie; I really wasn’t impressed with his play. I don’t know, maybe he just had an off night. There was a scary moment late in the second quarter where Jones collided with a Wood player, and Velton went down favoring his knee. He got up with the help of a few players, but he went straight to locker room. Jones would return to the game to begin the second half. The score at half was 28-21 Wood.
I thought the Vikings played really well in the first half. I mean for crying out loud they had a lead going into half. Its not like they were playing an inferior team or something. Halftime brought us our first look at the Wood varsity cheerleaders. They performed a rather nice entertaining dance routine that was greatly appreciated by the fans in attendance. Good job girls!!!
Let’s get back to the game, shall we?!?! The start of the third quarter saw the Falcons come out and bring it to the Vikings. Senior guard Lenny Young at times was unstoppable. Lenny had a very solid night with 14 points overall. The score after the three quarters of play was 43-39 North. Senior center Dan Comas was the high scorer of the game. Dan had a tremendous night. He had a total of 24 points, and 11 boards. I can’t remember a game where Dan was so dominant in the paint. Not to mention he threw in 3 blocks for good measure. If Wood can get performances like this all year, then I think they can turn this thing around and start getting some key division wins. They played tough tonight. Let me just say NORTH IS VERY BEATABLE. Honestly I was not really impressed overall. They have some very good players. There is no doubt about that. But for all the hype I’ve been reading about I don’t think they live up to it. Roman would easily handle this team. I really can't rip North anymore, because they actually did win this game. For everyone who read this, this is MY PERSONAL OPINION. Maybe they will prove me wrong. Anyway, other scorers for Wood were senior guard Eric Loughnane  (6 points, 2 boards), and junior Tim Fahy (3 points). For Dan and Sean to get all those points someone had to dish out the ball, and that was freshman Joe Getz. Although he didn’t score a basket, he did have 12 assists in the contest. That’s pretty impressive for a frosh. He also did a solid job on defense defending Velton Jones. Other contributors for North were: sophomore Woody Redding(2 points), senior R.J. Handy (11 points), sophomore Bob Makor (6 points, 3 boards), senior center Shahid Paulhill (7 points, 4 boards), and sophomore Josh Stevens (6 points). Velton Jones hit his free throws late to seal the win for the Falcons.

Up next for Wood are the Explorers of La Salle, Sunday afternoon. With this loss the Vikings now (7-6 overall) fall to 0-3 in division play. It’s imperative that they get that record up if they want any shot at the playoffs. A shoutout to the Wood students for an excellent turnout. Way to go!! But you know what? We need even more students at games. We need to turn that gym into a tremendous home court advantage for our boys.  Well that’s it for me. This is another edition of the High Flyin’ Viking.
Player of the Game- Mr. Dan Comas, his stats say it all.

Conwell-Egan 55, Wood 41

Having lost to McDevitt Friday night, tonight’s game was a must win for Wood. Unfortunately, once again the outcome wasn’t what they had expected. Right from the start Egan dictated the play. Egan quickly jumped out to 15-5 lead.  Leading the way for the Eagles was senior center Hayk Gyokchyan. Hayk was for sure a dominating force tonight. He goes about 6’9 or 6’10, well over 200 pounds. For a big man he sure does have a nice touch from beyond the arc. He knocked down two early threes to help extend their lead. He finished with a total of  21 points and 7 boards. Wood didn’t seem prepared for what Egan threw at them tonight. There was miscommunication with defensive assignments, sloppy play in both ends, and turnovers. They just couldn’t create their own shot. After 1 quarter it was 17-7 Egan.
The Eagles continued their dominance into the second quarter as well. They got a nice spark off the bench from senior forward Matt Engle. Matt came in, played a nice role defensively, and knocked down a few shots. Including two three pointers. He finished the game with a total of 8 points. Okay how about some positive news now. Junior forward Sean McCartney had a very nice game. Sean, who started in place of Brian O’Grady, finished the contest with 12 points and 2 boards. Sean also went 2-3 from beyond the arc. It was nice to see Sean have a good game especially after he was getting heckled by every single McDevitt fan Friday night. But that’s another story for a different day. Going into half Wood was trailing 25-12.
To start the second half, freshman Joe Getz ( 6 points, 4 boards) quickly hit two three pointers to chip into Egan’s lead. Things were  looking good for Wood. Dan Comas (10 points, 7 boards) was starting to get hot and Eric Loughnane (8 points) was finding his rhythm. At one point Egan’s lead was only three points. But that all changed once Hayk Gyokchyan came back onto the floor. Hayk continued his strong play from the 1st half into the second, and Wood really couldn’t control him at all. Sophomore Andrew Schaefer hit a buzzer-beating three at the end of the third to extend the Eagles lead to 32-26.
The fourth quarter for the most part was all Egan. Junior forward Jonas Skovdal had major impact tonight with 10 points and 6 boards. At times during the 4th he was just scoring and rebounding at will. Also playing a nice game was senior guard Rashad Little. Boy, is this kid lightning quick. Rashad had 8 points, and 5 boards. Also contributing for Wood was senior guard Joe Huebner (5 points, 2 boards). After the game Joe had two huge ice bags on his legs. He is obviously still feeling pain from his leg injuries.

Overall this one really hurts for Wood. With this loss the Vikings are now 6-4 overall, but here’s the killer: 0-2 in division play. These early division games are crucial if they want to make the playoffs. The games from here on out just get even tougher.  They now have off until next weekend where they will be participating in the Boardwalk Basketball Classic in Wildwood. Their next league game is Jan.
4 at home, versus North Catholic. That game is an 8 o’clock start time. I just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
A shoutout goes to all the Warminster Wackies who were in attendance tonight. That was very nice to see.  Also in attendance tonight were former Viking, an All-Catholic leaguer Fran McGlinn, along with UMBC star Matt Spadafora.

McDevitt 46, Wood 42
Well, I guarantee you this is not the way the Vikings wanted to start off Northern Division play. To be honest, Wood just didn’t play well at all tonight. You could kind of see this coming just with the way the 1st quarter played out. The play was slow, sluggish and sloppy with missed shots and turnovers galore for both teams, not to mention some questionable calls. Neither team scored a basket until about the four minute mark of the 1st. The score after 1 quarter was a mere 8-7 McDevitt. Yes, everyone you are reading that right. Freshman guard Joe Getz (13 points, 3 boards) did hit a nice three-pointer at the buzzer to end the session. The Lancers, as well, had a rough first quarter. OK, enough of all this negative talk, let’s talk about the second quarter. Well, the first part of the second quarter was pretty impressive for Wood. The Vikings started off with a nice 8-0 run to help boost their lead to 15-8. Helping to lead the way was senior guard Eric Loughnane. Overall Loughnane had nice night, finishing with 10 points. After Wood’s 8-0 run, the Lancers called a timeout to refocus and gain their thoughts. Helping to lead the way for McDevitt was senior R.P. Boyle. Boyle had a very good game. He finished with a total of 14 points, including two threeballs, and 3 boards. Wood continued its strong defensive play throughout the rest of the 2nd quarter. Sophomore forward Brian O’Grady had a strong game on the glass (3 points, 7 boards). The Vikings took a commanding 22-16 lead into half.
Now for the third quarter. Just like Wood did to begin the second quarter, they did pretty much the same thing to open the third. The Vikings went on a nice 9-2 run to extend their lead to 31-18. Helping out for Wood was senior center Dan Comas. Comas, who finished with only 10 points and 8 boards, didn’t have his typical performance we are accustomed to seeing. One thing I think that attributed to that was Dan just didn’t seem to be in a rhythm tonight. Comas needs to get touches early and often for him to be effective. That just didn’t happen tonight. As for the Lancers, senior center James Williams was pretty effective inside and in the paint tonight, especially in the second half. Williams finished with 10 points, and pulled down 4 boards. He was a major factor. The score after three was 35-31 Wood.
Things were looking OK for Wood. So it wasn’t what anyone might have expected: only up by four going into the fourth. But, hey, at least they had a shot at winning. Well, so much for that idea. The Lancers, with the help of their home crowd, really took it to Wood in the fourth. At points the Vikings couldn’t even buy a shot. The Lancers capitalized on Wood’s mistakes, and they hit their free throws. OK, let's flash forward to about 2 minutes to go in the game. Wood is up, 40-37. McDevitt guard R.P. Boyle hits a huge three to tie the game. The crowd is going absolutely nuts. Wood tries to quickly respond, but fails. The Lancers come back the other way and hit a shot. Now the Lancers are up by two, 42-40, and it's their first lead since the 1st quarter. Wood is in a must-foul situation, and senior Matt Davis (9 points, 5 boards) executes on four key foul shots to seal the upset win. The students go crazy and storm the court to congratulate their Lancers. Other stats for the Lancers were: Courtney Havens-Dobbs (8 points, 3 boards) and Matt Shervin (3 points, 5 boards). Other stats for Wood: Tim Fahy (3 points, 2 boards), and Joe Huebner (5 points, 2 boards). Joe by the way is still recovering from injuries to his legs, so he’s still not 100% healthy. When he is, watch out, because he can play ball.
In all honesty this loss really stings for Wood. Dropping to 0-1 in division play is not good. I think senior guard Joe Huebner summed it up pretty good. “We have to spilt this weekend. We can’t fall behind 0-2 in division play especially with the likes of North, Judge, and Ryan. We must rebound from this loss at come out ready to play Sunday versus Conwell- Egan.” That game by the way is at 7:30 P.M. at Wood. I fully expect coach Joe Sette to have his men ready to play Sunday versus Egan. Well, this is another edition of the High Flyin’ Viking.
Player of the Game- The Lancers’ senior guard Matt Davis. He hit those four key free throws late to seal the game.

Wood 63, Kennedy-Kenrick 38

There is a reason why you play four quarters in the game of basketball. If you don’t play so well in the 1st half, you have the chance to rebound from it in the 2nd  half. Well, that’s exactly what the Vikings did tonight. I have to give a lot of credit to those boys of K-K. In the first half, they sure didn’t look like the same team that went 0-26 last year. They played right with Wood all through the first half. Sitting in the stands I’m thinking to myself, Wood can’t lose this game. They're the better team by far. The score after the first was 19-11 Wood.
There was no question who the star for the Wolverines was tonight. Senior guard Karlton Byrd came out scorching hot from the field in the first half. This kid was knocking down shots left and right. Hitting three balls, and drawing fouls. Byrd scored 21 of  the Wolverines' 28 points in the first half. He capped off his stellar first half of play with buzzer-beating three. Unfortunately, that basket would be his last of the night. He had 21 points, and 5 boards on the night. Credit must go out to the Vikings’ fullcourt-press defense. They were absolutely relentless tonight. Not giving K-K a square inch to move, plus shutting out  Karlton Byrd for the whole second half. The score at halftime was 31-28 Wood.
Going into the locker room it seemed as if the Wood coaching staff was “displeased” with their team's play. I have no idea what was said at half, but whatever was said it definitely fired up the Vikings. The second half was all Wood. Once again leading the way for the Vikings was senior center Dan Comas. Comas, who had sub par 1st half, came out on fire to begin the third quarter. He was all over the place, especially in the paint. He had a total of 21 points, and 8 rebounds. Also he played solid defense all night long. Sophomore Brian O’Grady (8 points, 6 boards), and senior guard Eric Loughnane (8 points, 3 boards, 2 assists) also had very solid games.  Sean McCartney (4 points, 4 boards) and Tim Fahy (3 points) had nice solid games off the bench. They both also played a key role defensively. Also contributing for Wood were: senior Joe Huebner (5 points, 2 boards), freshman Joe Getz (5 points), and sophomore Fran Dolan (3 points). Sophomores Doug Macrone and Scott Adkins each chipped in with two points. Having a solid game for K-K was sophomore David Tornetta (7 points, 3 boards). Besides Tornetta and Byrd, the Wolverines got little offense from anyone else.
The key to this game, by far, was the role Wood’s defense played in shutting out Byrd in the second half. Wood took advantage of the Wolverines' cold shooting, and capitalized on turnovers. Overall a good win for the Vikings. Next up for Wood (6-2 overall) is the first division game against the Lancers of Bishop McDevitt, Friday night at 7:30 at McDevitt. Should be an entertaining match-up to watch.

West Catholic 61, Wood 51
Well, once again this school year West Catholic defeats Archbishop Wood. This time, instead of on the gridiron, it was on the basketball court. This game didn’t go the Vikings' way right from the get-go. West opened up the game with a 15-4 run. Wood seemed like they didn’t have their running legs to begin the game. Leading the way for the Burrs was junior guard Rob Holloman. Holloman was all over the court today. He had a total of 16 points, and 2 rebounds. It just seems like every time this kid has the ball something positive is going to happen. He has a tremendous first step, and pretty quick ball handling skills. He also knows how to pass the rock.  The 1st quarter was definitely not the Vikings basketball everybody is used to. The score after 1 quarter of play was 19-6 West. The 2nd quarter was pretty much the same as the first. Wood just didn’t seem comfortable. They did, however, pick up their play late in the 2nd. Freshman guard Joe Getz hit some nice shots late in the quarter; he also played well defensively the entire game. Getz finished the game with 11 points, 5 boards, and 2 assists. Junior forward Sean McCartney played a nice role off the bench.  He had a total of 7 points, including a three ball, and also threw in 3 assists. The score at half was 30-18 West. I just had a feeling sitting there during halftime that Wood would come out determined to make up for what they didn’t accomplish during the first two quarters. For the first few minutes of the second half I was right. Wood came out on fire from the field. Knocking down shots, drawing fouls, forcing turnovers. They cut the Burrs' lead to only 7 points at one point. Once again making a rather large contribution was senior center Dan Comas. Dan, who had a sub par 1st half, seemed determine to ride the ship, and turn things around for the Vikings. Comas had 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 nice blocks. Another solid performance from Dan. Comas’s opposition, West senior center Eric Brennan, had a solid performance also (10 points, 9 boards). Also playing a vital role for the Burrs was senior forward Sergino Mystil (12 points,  three boards). West went on a run late in the third quarter to extend their lead to 47-40. The Vikings made a surge midway through the 4th, but West was just way too much to handle. West was running up and down the court all day long. Wood really didn’t have an answer to stop them. The Burrs just got the better of the Vikings. Other key contributors for West were: Haleem Hayward (9 points, 5 boards), Curtis Drake (6 points, three boards), and Eric Beal (7 points, and 4 boards). Some other contributors for Wood were: Joe Huebner (6 points, including a three, and 3 boards), Eric Loughnane (4 points, 1 board), and Brian O’Grady (4 points and 4 boards). There are days like this, so there is nothing you can do about it. Just go to practice, play hard, fix your mistakes. Wood will be fine. I expect them to be ready Tuesday night when they play Kennedy-Kenrick. The game by the way is at Kennedy-Kenrick, tipoff 7:30.
Player of the Game- West senior guard Rob Holloman. Like I said before, the kid was everywhere.

Wood 59, O’Hara 50
Here we go again with another edition of the High Flyin’ Viking. Like the previous game the Vikings played, the game started off very slow. O’Hara jumped out to an early 10-6 lead. Helping to lead the way was O’Hara guard Zach Tansey. Tansey hit a few key shots early in the quarter to extend the Lions lead. Tansey was O’Hara’s leading scorer. He finished the game with 19 points, including a three pointer. Wood coach Joe Sette called a timeout to give some “words of wisdom” to his boys. Coming out of the timeout Wood went on a nice little run to finish out the quarter. The score after the 1st quarter was 15-10 Wood. Helping to lead the way for Wood was freshman guard Joe Getz. Getz played an overall great game for the Vikings. He finished with 12 points, and 3 rebounds. Remember everyone, this kid is only a Freshman. The second quarter was very evenly matched in terms of play. It seemed like every time Wood scored a basket, O’Hara answered. Playing a huge role for O’Hara today was forward Jim Kelleher. This kid was everywhere. Jim finished the game with 17 points, (3-3 from long distance), and also snagged 3 boards. Wood junior guard Tim Fahy provided a nice spark off the bench during the 1st half for the Vikings. Although he only scored 3 points, Tim played a nice role defensively. Causing multiple turnovers, and he also had a few steals. At half it was 26-21 Wood. Coming out after half, the Lions were on fire from the field. Leading the surge was forward Josh Showers. Showers made some nice shots, and had a nice game off the glass. He finished the game with 8 points, and 4 boards. At one point O’Hara closed the lead to one point. You guys might be thinking, why haven’t I mentioned anything about senior center Dan Comas? Well, don’t worry, I didn’t forget. Once again, like he’s done so many times before, Dan had a monster game. Even though his point total at half was low (8 points, 7 boards), Dan stepped his game up in the second half just when Wood needed him. Overall he had 20 points, and 11 boards, and also threw an assist for good measure. Oh, he also had had two monster blocks as well. Comas and his partner in crime, senior guard Joe Huebner,  had strong games to lead the Vikings. Huebner finished with 11 points, and four assists. Senior Eric Loughnane (4 points, 4 boards), sophomore Brian O’Grady (5 points, 5 boards, 4 assists) also had strong games for Wood. O’Grady did a nice job defensively against the Lions. Sophomores Fran Dougherty and Fran Dolan had nice contributions off the bench. Not to be forgotten in all of this was the play of O’Hara. I give these boys tremendous credit for battling. This was NO easy contest for Wood. O’Hara gave them a hard game. The Lions showed a lot of heart out there on the court today. Up next for Wood (5-1 overall) is the mighty Burrs of West Catholic. This is a huge game for Wood. West will surely be a challenge for Wood. Not to mention the Vikings might want to seek some revenge. Just ask the football players. Ha, ha!!! The game is at Wood on Sunday Dec. 16th at 2:30.
Players of the Game- Now normally I just give out one player, but today I’m giving out two. For Wood, once again Dan Comas, and for O’Hara, Zach Tansey.
Some thoughts on the game- Yes everyone this is a new section. Here are some quotes from the game.  “Joe Getz played a great game today, making key shots, hitting key foul shots down the stretch, it was pretty impressive because he’s only a Freshmen,” said senior center Dan Comas.

“We got some injuries right now, we got some guys coming back from football, once we get everyone healthy and situated we’ll be ready to roll, we definitely have a great shot at making the playoffs this year,” said senior guard Joe Huebner.

Wood 56, Hatboro-Horsham 41
One word can describe the play of both these teams in the 1st half, sloppy. Turnovers, missed shots and stupid fouls, were prevalent. The score after the 1st quarter was 10-10. Nobody seemed like they wanted to score. But that all changed during the 2nd half. The Vikings seemed like they just wanted the game more then the Hatters. Senior center Dan Comas once again had a monster night. Although he -- and the team, for that matter -- did start off slow, the Vikings quickly turned it around. Comas finished the night with 19 points (1-6 FT), and also pulled down 13 boards. This game would have been much closer if it wasn’t for the foul shooting of Senior Eric Loughnane. Loughnane went 9-10 from the line, pulled down 4 boards, hit a 3 three pointer, and finished the game with 14 points. Not to mention his excellent defense. Overall Eric played a strong game. Leading the way for the Hatters was junior guard Eric Daley, who went 4-5 from the line, and finished with a total of 8 points. Junior guard Dan Lineberger also contributed with 8 points. I don’t know what coach Joe Sette said to his boys in the locker room at halftime, but whatever he said he got his troops fired up and motivated to play a good second half. The Vikings came out firing on all cylinders. They went on an 8-0 run early on, and never looked back. Leading the charge was Senior guard Joe Huebner. Joe played some excellent defense. He caused multiple turnovers, had a few steals, threw in 3 assists along the way. Oh, and by the way, he chipped in 12 points, 2 rebounds, and went 2-2 from beyond the arc. Overall solid performance by Joe. I can’t stress enough how “flat” the Hatters were in the second half. At one point during the 3rd quarter, the Hatters didn’t score a single point for well over 6 minutes. During that time Wood took it to them. The Vikings' fast break offense look really good tonight. Freshmen Joe Getz chipped in 3 points, along with 6 rebounds. Sophomore Brian O’Grady had a strong defensive game. He finished the contest with 2 points, 4 boards, 1 assist. Sophomore Fran Dolan also got into the action. He had 4 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. Overall Wood played a strong game, and things are looking good in Warminster. With this win the Vikings are now 4-1 overall.  Next up for the Vikings, Friday night, Dec. 14th, at home  versus the Lions of Cardinal O’Hara. This should be a good test for Wood.
NOTE: Junior forward Sean McCartney was ejected late in the 1st half on a questionable technical foul call. Sean along with Dan Linebeger, were battling for a rebound on the floor No one really seems to know what happened, but McCartney was the only one who got a “T”. Let’s just say the Wood coaching staff was “very upset” with the call. Sean had 2 points on the night.
Player of the Game: Hands down is Dan Comas. His stats speak for themselves. Overall solid performance from Dan. Shoutout has to go to Wood Faithful. Nothing against the Hatboro-Horsham fans, but the Wood kids made more noise then the Hatter fans all night long. I don’t know if that’s because they were losing all night, but come on show some pride in your school. Anyway that’s another edition of the High Flyin’ Viking.

Wood 62, William Penn 56
The Vikings overcame a 14-point deficit late in the second half to beat William Penn. Leading the way for the Vikings was senior center Dan Comas, who finished with 29 points on the game, which by the way is a career high. Comas scored 11 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter. Can you say clutch? Strong play from Dan is a great thing to see already. As he goes, so does the team. I forgot to mention Comas also pulled down 12 boards. Overall stellar performance from Dan. Junior forward Sean McCartney also added 11 points to the cause. Does the name sound familiar?  Sean plays football for Wood, where he was 1st team All-Catholic punter, and 1st  team All-Catholic DB this year.  Let’s get back to basketball shall we. Senior Eric Loughnane chipped in with 9 points, and senior Joe Huebner went 2-3 from the line and finished with 2 points on the afternoon. Also playing a big role in the game was the play of sophomore Brian O’Grady, and Frosh Joe Getz. O’Grady finished with 6 points, while Getz went 3-4 from the line, and finished with 5 total points. Now I can’t forget about Penn, which overall played a strong game, but just couldn’t handle the surging Vikings in the second half. Leading the way for Penn was senior Brandon Tondreau -- 15 points, 9 on three-point shots. Also contributing was junior Darrell Lowry. He finished with 10 total points on the afternoon. Senior Mark Allen, and senior Anthony Parker also had nice games. With this win the Vikings are now 3-1 overall. Up next for Wood is the Hatters of Hatboro-Horsham, Wednesday Night, at Hatboro- Horsham. This should be a very good game. Over the past few years a sort of neighborhood rivalry has emerged between these two schools. I expect both teams to come out and play their best. Well, this has been another edition of the High Flyin’ Viking . . .

DEC. 7
Archbishop Wood Basketball Preview

If one word could describe Wood this year it would be unique. The reason why I say this is that the Vikings have a unique blend of young and veteran players. Wood is led by its 6’5 Sr. center, Dan Comas, 2nd team All-Catholic last year, and its two senior guards, Eric Loughnane and Joe Huebner. One thing is for sure: If the Vikings want to improve on their 13-13 record from last year it’s imperative that they get support from their 6 sophomores. Fran Dolan, Fran Dougherty, and Brian O’Grady all have had varsity experience. Newcomers Scott Adkins, Jerry Rahill, and Doug Macrone will have to adjust to the varsity style of play. Not to mention freshman Joe Getz will need to as well. With only having two juniors on the roster Coach Joe Sette will rely heavily on Sean McCartney and Tim Fahy for their veteran leadership along with the other  senior players. One of the most interesting things to look forward to this season is the play of senior forward/guard Mike Novey. Last weekend at the Tipoff Classic in Doylestown, Novey scored 14 points against Downingtown West. Even though the Vikings lost it was good to see the play of Novey, who by the way spent last year on the JV squad. Dan Comas played a huge role in the tournament as well. Overall things are looking bright here in Warminster for the Vikings. Although, it might not be an easy road schedule-wise for the Vikings this year, especially playing in the PCL North, with the likes of Dougherty, North, La Salle, Ryan, and Judge. But  you never know. Anything can happen. I expect Wood to play their hardest every time they're on the court, and show the type of passion and enthusiasm that Archbishop Wood and its fans love.
