Philadelphia High School Football
History of Bonner-Prendergast (nee Msgr. Bonner)
in Drexel Hill, PA

Return to TedSilary.com Home Page

This page details much of the football history of Bonner-Prendergast
High (nee Monsignor Bonner) in Drexel Hill, PA, a Philadelphia suburb.
The Friars played a patchwork schedule in the 1954 and 1955 seasons,
then joined the Catholic League for the 1956 season. They have
remained there since, but were ineligible to compete for the championship
in the 1962 season due to rules violations.
(In the very early seasons, the school was known as Archbishop
Prendergast before "Prendie" became an all-girls school. Bonner and
Prendie merged for the 2012-13 school year.)
If corrections are needed, please contact

and provide verification of new information, if possible. Thanks!
Please note: Some elements are still being finalized.

(Information prior to 1976 was provided mostly by Dr. Roger B. Saylor,
a famed Pennsylvania football historian. He passed away in 2013.)

DETAILS OF BONNER'S CHAMPIONSHIPS

CATHOLIC LEAGUE
1959
At Franklin Field
Bonner 6, La Salle 0
Sprung by Tony Dolcemore's block, Russ Hendricks (16-116)
scampered 80 yards for a TD with 6:30 remaining as Bonner won the title
in only its fourth year of CL competition. Just before Hendricks' score,
Dan Cugini stopped Harry Heinzl (22-72) on a fourth-and-1 play at
Bonner's 9.
1961
At Temple Stadium
Bonner 13, La Salle 6
Pete Padley and QB Jack McIlhenney ran for TDs for Bonner, which
had lost to La Salle, 16-0, in the regular season. La Salle receivers
dropped four would-be TD passes, but Tom Hendricks did catch one on a
29-yard flip from Frank Daniel.
1994
At Plymouth-Whitemarsh
Bonner 21, Carroll 0
Passing whiz Mike Mitros surprised Carroll by running for 109
yards and TDs of 32 and 35 yards on 14 carries as Bonner won its first
title since 1961. Mitros also passed 5-for-14 for 102 yards and a
66-yard TD -- a city-league record 41st -- to Frank Serratore. For
Carroll, Andrew Tamaccio passed 16-for-29 for 198 yards, mostly to Corey
Hill (7-90) and Pete Hinckle (6-93).

CITY TITLE
1959
At Franklin Field
Bonner 54, Central 0
Russ Hendricks rushed for 143 yards and one TD on 22 carries as
Bonner frolicked. Dave Connell passed 4-for-6 for 47 yards and TDs to
Frank Gallo and Frank Street. The Friars, who rang up 23 first downs
overall, scored 25 fourth-quarter points despite heavy substituting by
coach Jack Ferrante. Central had allowed only 26 points in eight PL
contests.
1961
At Franklin Field
Bonner 20, Southern 13
Jack McIlhenney passed 5-for-7 for 85 yards and two TDs to give
retiring coach Jack Ferrante, a former Eagle, his second city title in
three years. The clinching TD came with 5:32 remaining on McIlhenney's
10-yard flip to Joe Lombardi. Mike Facciolo set up two TDs with an
interception and a big return of a partially blocked punt. Leslie
Johnson (16-98) and Mario DeLiberty (16-71, TD) rushed for one TD
apiece. For Southern, fumble recoveries by Frank DeFelice and Paul Della
Vecchia set up rushing TDs by Bobby Petrella and Joe Briddell (12-65).
