Eastern Regional's field hockey team, No. 1 in the nation, will be honored by the Philadelphia Sports Writer Association at the annual banquet (Monday, Jan. 21, at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill, N.J.) Coach Danyle Heilig and the seniors will accept the award.
  With 1,195 points,
Malvern jr. G Deuce Turner now ranks fifth on the school's list of career scoring leaders. Top four: Charlie Floyd (1,725), Brian Grandieri (1,638), Gary Duda (1,535), Brendan Kilpatrick (1,290).

Mr. Fanning, who passed away yesterday at age 91, was a first team All-Catholic basketball player at SJ Prep in 1944 and '45. He then played at La Salle College, later became a ref, coached CYO ball at St. Matt's, in Mayfair, and played in a senior softball league until age 87 (even pinch-running for much younger guys). Also, he was honored by multiple sports organizations. RIP, sir.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. James Heflin. Mr. Heflin, formerly the long-time CFO of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, in Camden, passed away Wednesday. On Thanksgiving morning in 1954, playing end, he scored two TDs as North Catholic (1-5-1 in CL play) shocked Frankford, the Pub champion, 31-12, at Connie Mack Stadium, RIP sir.

He was the LQs' first coach and served as the organization's president until 2005. RIP, sir.

He's the second quarterback in Eastern history to throw for over 2,000 yards in a season. Tom Flacco did it twice with 2,957 yards in 2012 and 2,782 yards in 2013.

  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Rick Beckett. Rick, a starter for Overbrook's 1960 Pub basketball finalists and the school's coach for seven seasons (1990-96; future NBAer Malik Rose was his headliner), passed away yesterday. RIP, Rick.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Erwin "Erv" Antoni. Mr. Antoni, a former three-sport athlete and Penn and an alternate for the 1948 Olympic soccer team, passed away this afternoon. Mr. Antoni also taught/coached basketball and served as the athletic director for 32 years (ending in 1981) at the old Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, in Mt. Airy,and his sons, Erv and Rocky, were star athletes at McDevitt. RIP, sir.

The defensive unit, as coordinated by Dom Gregorio: Es Tyrone Fowler and Ken Talley, Ts Sean Stanton and Nasire Griffin, MLB Richard Cotton, OLBs Jovan Hinton and Lawrence Richardson, CBs Mike Price and Akrie Tilley, FS Zay Scott, SS Lonnie Rice. Tryouts fot the nationally famous Little Quakers youth football team will be held Sept. 25-26 and Oct. 2-3 at Penn Charter, 3000 West School House Lane, Phila., PA, 19144. Registration at 6 p.m. Sessions begin at 7 p.m. Candidates must attend at least two tryouts. Click here to pre-register.
  If anyone wants lots of sun for the 2019 baseball season, it's
Gene Otto. In 2018, in assorted leagues, Gene assigned umpires for 1,697 games. There were 418 rainouts. An outrageous 295 involved Catholic and Inter-Ac schools (all levels, non-league games included). ALL were rescheduled. Other leagues Gene handles: Marzano, American Legion, Pen-Del , Youth Phillies. Forty-eight total games in those leagues were rescheduled.

Mr. Slosburg, who passed away Aug. 30 at age 91, starred in football at Central ('45) and Temple, then played in the NFL. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of John J. "Jack" Maley Sr. Mr. Maley, who passed away yesterday, was a prominent fast-pitch softball player/manager and his skills earned him spots in multiple Halls of Fame. Also, he had sons who were prominent athletes at Judge/Penn Charter. Mr. Maley (North Catholic '49),  a Korean War vet, was a purchasing manager at Narco Avionics, in Ft. Washington, for over 25 years. RIP, sir.
