Division I Recap through
June 2, 2015
When the NCAA D-I
Baseball Tournament seeds
were announced, there were
seven Hometown Philly guys
left standing. Those former
high school stars from the
Philly City Leagues,
represented four
universities: VCU, Maryland,
Lehigh and Louisville.
Amazingly, three of those
four schools won their
regional, and are headed to
the next round, The Super
Regionals, slated to get
underway this weekend.
* Lehigh,
winners of the Patriot
League Championship, were
swept in their two games at
the Baton Rouge Regional.
Despite losses against LSU
and Tulane, three Mountain
Hawks received game
experience that can only
provide benefits down the
road. Kevin Long,
jr RHP (La Salle HS),
Mark Washington,
fr RHP (Episcopal Academy)
and soph OF Stephen
Fitzgerald
(Haverford School) appeared
in the season finale vs
Tulane. Another former
Inter-Ac player,
Matt Kozemchak (Springside
Chestnut Hill Academy) was a
sophomore lefty for Lehigh
this season.
* Louisville
is the #3
overall seed in the tourney,
and earned the right to host
not only the regional, but
the Super Regional, as well.
The Cardinals won all three
of their games in the
Louisville Regional, and
advanced to the Super
Regionals for the seventh
time in the last 11 years.
They will play a
best-of-three series vs #13
Cal State Fullerton, hoping
to be among the final eight
teams playing in the College
World Series in Omaha.
Junior first baseman Danny
Rosenbaum (Springside
Chestnut Hill
Academy/Plymouth-Whitemarsh)
hit a two-run homer in a 4-3
win vs Michigan in game two
of the Regional. In his last
four starts, Danny is
batting .462 (6-13) with two
HR and four RBI.
* VCU lost
to Norfolk State on May 5,
dropping their season record
to a slightly above average
26-22. The Rams then reeled
off 13 consecutive wins,
including running the table
in the A-10
Tournament. Junior
outfielder and Temple
transfer Jimmy
Kerrigan (Neumann-Goretti) really
stepped it up during the
Rams stretch run. In his
last 15 games, Jimmy has
batted .385 (20-52), with 10
runs, 11 RBI and a .439 OBP.
VCU was a #4-seed in the
Dallas Regional, and totally
overlooked by the pundits.
The Rams are only the fifth
#4-seed ever to win a
regional. In their
first-ever Super Regional
appearance, VCU will face
off in a best-of-three
series vs host
Miami, winners of the Coral
Gables Regional. First game
is Friday at noon.
* Maryland
was
the #3-seed in the Los
Angeles Regional, and after
beating Ole Miss, the
Terrapins won two of their
next three games against the
top seed in the regional
to advance to next weekend's
Super Regional. Oh by the
way, the team that Maryland
beat was none other than
UCLA, not only the top-seed
in the regional, but the
top-seed in the entire
tournament! Zach
Jancarski, a
freshman outfielder from
Springside Chestnut Hill
Academy, served primarily as
a pinch runner and defensive
replacement this season. In
years past, that was a spot
occupied by another Philly
guy, who transferred to a
D-II school, and went on to
win the national
championship (see below).
* University
of Tampa
was the top-ranked team in
Division II for the first
six weeks of the season. And
when it mattered most, they
were the top-ranked team at
the end of the season. The
Spartans swept all four
games in the South Regional
and won all four of their
games in the D-II World
Series in Cary, NC. Maryland
transfer and Penn Charter
grad Andrew Amaro
batted leadoff for much of
the season, finishing with a
.320 BA in 44 games. Andrew
led the team with 19 stolen
bases (23 attempts). Many of
his teammates will hear
their names called in the
MLB draft (June 8-10),
notably OF Tracy
Scoggins (Port St.
Lucie, FL) and LHP Michael
Calkins (Oneonta,
NY). Maybe even Andrew Amaro
will get some
recognition. Don't forget it
was U Tampa that beat The
Philadelphia Phillies in
their Clearwater opener,
where Amaro went 1-3, BB,
RBI, R, SB.
