Philadelphia High School Football
History of St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia, PA
Return to TedSilary.com Home Page
This page details much of the football history of St. Joseph's Prep
in Philadelphia, PA. The Hawks (nee Hawklets) played patchwork
schedules in 1988-89, 1903-1904, 1906-19 and 1956-62 (no team:
1900-02, 1905) and have been part of the Philadelphia Catholic
League for 91 seasons (1920-1955, 1963-2017).
*There was no official CL competition in 1929, but the Prep did
play all members from the 1928 and 1930 seasons.*
If corrections are needed, please contact Ted Silary at tedtee307@yahoo.com
and provide verification of new information, if possible. Thanks!
Some research is still being conducted/cross-checked.
(Information prior to 1976 was provided mostly by Dr. Roger B. Saylor,
a famed Pennsylvania football historian. He passed away in 2013.)

At Strawbridge & Clothier Field
Villanova Prep 7, West 0
As 3,000 fans watched in heavy rain, the only score came on
defense as Courtney blocked a first-quarter punt and Whalen recovered in
the end zone. McNamara made an interception to thwart West's best
scoring chance.
At Franklin Field
SJ Prep 21, Villanova Prep 10
Leo Breslin ran 40 yards for a touchdown from scrimmage and William
Downey returned a punt the same distance for another score as The Prep
seized early command. Emmett Osbourn's 1-yard TD completed St. Joe's scoring. For Villanova, the highlight was McNamara's 37-yard field goal.

In very sloppy conditions, the Hawklets clinched the title with a game
remaining by edging St. John's, 7-0. The score, on Tom Patchel's 4-yard
run, capped a 59-yard drive that started the game. Patchel also made a
tackle, for a 5-yard loss, back to the 13, to thwart St. John's most
serious drive. The Prep lost its finale to Roman, the runner-up at 5-1-2.

On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, before 25,000 at Shibe Park,
Dick Baraldi's 30-yard field goal got the Hawklets started in a 16-0,
title-earning win over archrival Roman. Bill Brady added two scoring
passes. Roman settled for second at 5-1-1.

Hawklets topped Roman, 13-6, to win the championship. The winners' other
TD came on Harry Doyle's 26-yard pass to sub Cliff Gardner. Joe Rogers
ran for Roman's score. West earned second at 4-0-3.

Kevin Komelasky (nine tackles), Victor Hobson and Aaron Brown
(seven apiece) led the defense as the Hawklets limited Ryan to Mike
Gavaghan's 22-yard, first-quarter field goal and won their first
championship since 1977. Ryan's chances were damaged early in the second
quarter when leading rusher Jeff Moore suffered a broken ankle. The Prep
scored on Jermaine Slade's 6-yard pass from Steve Comly and Brown's
62-yard run. Brown ran eight times for 89 yards. Milton Johnson added
93 yards on 20 carries. Johnson and Ryan's Joe O'Connell (28-106) were
the first sophs in CL history to surpass 1,000 yards in a season. Their
totals: O'Connell (1,147), Johnson (1,032).

While often sharing one wideout spot, Pete Chromiak (3-84) and
Jim Lachman (4-64) caught one TD apiece from Vince Gallagher (11-for-17,
189) as the Hawks (10-3) completed their all-the-way-back climb from an
0-3 start to the season. A close game was broken up in the final 3
minutes of the first half as Chromiak scored on a 71-yard bomb and Kyle
Ambrogi (21-95) ran 4 yards for a TD, making it 21-0. Gallagher and
Danny Jones had interceptions. Bonner ran 41 plays, and just five
produced gains of more than 10 yards. Three occurred after the score was

SJ Prep 38, Roman 7
For the first time in decades, the title games in both divisions were
played before Thanksgiving. In this one, the first scrimmage play
yielded a 59-yard scoring pass from Matt Stefanski to Steve Quinn and
then the night became The Pat Kaiser Show. Shrugging off teasing about a
learning disability from Roman's fans, Kaiser set city playoff records
for rushing yards (316, on 18 carries) and points (32) and tied city
marks for rushing TDs in a playoff (four) and career field goals (25).
Kaiser's field goal was a 32-yarder. After a penalty, he converted one
of his five PAT from 35. Kaiser finished the season with 2,178 rushing
yards and city marks for rushing TDs (35) and total TDs (37).
His 525 career points are No. 1 in CL history and his 306 season points
were briefly the state record. For Roman, Andre Sloan-El was involved in
51 plays and accounted for 331 yards, passing 20-for-35 for 230 and
rushing 16 times for 101.

Steve Quinn recovered the opening kickoff on the O'Hara 11, Dan Jones
immediately ran for a TD and the Lions were as good as done against this
powerhouse. Soph John Shaw tied a city postseason record with four TDs
while rushing 19 times for 98 yards. Mark Noonan passed for a TD to
Quinn and ran for one of his own. The Hawks (12-0) extended their city
record winning streak to 35 games and were dubbed the best team in school
history by coach Gil Brooks. Brandon Friday, Matt Parkhurst and Charlie
Noonan, Mark's brother, had sacks as O'Hara was held to 75 yards total

The Hawks were guilty of two early missteps in the form of a fumble that led to
O'Hara's lone score, on Joe Juisti's 6-yard run, and a missed, chip-shot field goal.
They were dominant thereafter, though, while claiming their fourth title in five years
and raising coach Gil Brooks' total to five overall (also '97). That tied him with the
late Dick Bedesem (Egan, five from '63 to '70) for the most championships in CL
history. Soph Jamir Livingston ran 32 times for 187 yards and four TDs, tying the
city's postseason record, and classmate Tim Edger broke the mark for kicking points
with 11 on two field goals and five PAT. O'Hara was held to one first down.

Having failed to win championships four times since '06 after finishing first in the regular season,
the Hawks needed the confidence a nice start would provide. They got it: Pat Walsh kicked a
25-yard field goal and Jawan McAllister caught a 30-yard pass from Chris Martin 14 seconds later
after Walsh recovered a fumble on the kickoff (forced by Joe DuMond). Martin finished 8-for-12
for 172 yards and three TDs, but injured his left knee while lead-blocking for Olamide Zaccheaus
(10-109) on a 12-yard, wildcat-formation TD run in the fourth quarter. John Reid (also an
interception) and McAllister (2-87) had the other TD receptions. Vince Moffett hustled for 13
tackles (11 solos) and made strong contributions to the early success with a 40-yard kickoff return
and 32-yard reception. For La Salle, which ran 81 plays to Prep's 36, Kyle Shurmur passed
22-for-36 for 222 yards and a TD to Jimmy Herron. That came with 7.9 seconds remaining, then
Armen Ware stopped Shurmur on a conversion keeper, thus assuring the win. Jordan Meachum
contributed 158 yards of rushing/receiving. La Salle had won five consecutive AAAA crowns.

The Hawks broke their own record (45 in '03) for the most points scored in a Catholic final
above the AA level, and if not for a failed conversion pass, the final 7:22 would have featured
a running clock. After Jimmy Herron scored his second TD (29-yard interception; earlier a
63-yard punt return) to draw La Salle within 14-13 early in the second quarter, the Prep
stormed to three scores in 6:12 and the three drives required just six plays. Olamide Zaccheaus
(12-146, three TDs) posted the Hawks' first 100-yard rushing performance of the season.
D'Andre Swift (9-56, two), James Bell (15-97, one) also scampered for TDs and Jack Clements
hit John Reid for a 13-yard score. Reid set up his six-pointer by swatting a punt. Swift netted
127 yards on four returns. Jake Strain batted down four passes and recorded a sack while
Nick Vandevere and Joe DuMond made fumble recoveries to set up scores. Herron made five
catches for 44 yards, finalizing his career numbers at 156 (city record) and 2,333 (47 yards
short of city mark). Earlier he'd claimed the TD record with 33. Kyle Shurmur (14-for-26, 107)

of the Hawklets' backfield were Dick Baraldi, Francis "Bud" Buchy and
Harry Byrne. Buchy and Baraldi scored the other TDs. For Northeast, Erle

Soph D'Andre Swift made the most of four carries -- 89 yards and three
TDs -- as the Hawks seized a second consecutive CT for the first time
since 1938-39; those two contests began the series. James Bell (15-113) and
Olamide Zaccheaus (8-81, TD) also ran well while John Reid scored once
apiece on a catch/interception before suffering a knee injury shortly before
halftime. For Franklin, Kevin Caldwell raised his 2014 passing yardage total
to 2,893 -- best in city history -- by going 22-for-45 for 359 and three TDs.
Rapheal "Macho" Rodriguez turned five snags into 141 yards and two scores.

Carr repped the defense by blocking a punt through the end zone for a safety.

who left a 10-7 halftime deficit far behind, Moffett and D'Andre Swift ran for
scores, Dillon DeIuliis blocked a punt and fumble recoveries went to Jake
Strain/Rob DiSanto. PCC entered 15-0 and had allowed an average of only
110 yards over its previous six games. The Hawks churned to 318. Ryan

Thirteen hundred and 29 all-purpose yards later, defense finally prevailed as
Olamide Zaccheaus made a leaping, end-zone interception at 0:00, thus handing
the Hawks their second consecutive crown. D'Andre Swift ran 22 times for 220
yards and three TDs and added a fourth score on a pass from Jack Clements
9-for-16, 217, three). Zaccheaus, who also rushed for a TD, turned three
catches into 123 yards. Nick Vandevere mixed an interception with 14 tackles
and Jake Strain had nine stops. P-R won the all-purpose and scrimmage battles,

Eventually, yes, the Hawks rolled to an easy victory while claiming their third
state championship in four years and becoming just the second team in Catholic
League history to finish 14-0 (also La Salle in 1996). But through the first 18
minutes, the game was scoreless and the Prep owned just one gain of more
than 10 yards. Following a fumble recovery by Phil O'Connor, Marquez
McCray (12-for-22, 171) hit Terrance Greene for 36 yards. Two plays later,
D'Andre Swift raced 34 yards to the end zone and thrust his chest forward
as he crossed the goal line as if he were breaking the tape in an old-school,
100-yard dash. The next hero, right before halftime, was Darryle Simmons,
who took a short pass on the sideline, broke a tackle at the 25 and zoomed
downfield to complete a 35-yard score. The second half was flood-gates time
and a trick play got things started as wideout Richard Carr hit Terrance Greene
for a 20-yard tally. Another highlight was Greene's 93-yard TD on a kickoff
return. Swift finished with 161 yards and three TDs on 27 carries while
Greene (6-85) and Simmons (4-88) were the pass-catching wizards. James
Johnson fueled the defense, logging two TFL among 13 tackles and forcing a
fumble. Cooper Kim, Ryan Bryce and Paul Hess also made fumble recoveries.

All's well that ends well, even if the journey begins with a visit to hell. The
Hawks committed back-to-back turnovers in the very early moments and the
second, a pick-six, gave Harrisburg a 7-0 lead. QB Kyle McCord bounced back
wonderfully, thank you, leading the Prep (13-0) to its fourth largest-enrollment
title in six years while yet again posting eye-popping numbers. He passed
26-for-37 for 283 yards and two TDs while also sneaking for one score. He
finished the season with Catholic League passing records for yards (2,883) and
completions (201) and 35 TDs gave him a tie for that top spot. Johnny Freeman
(4-60) and Anthony Rightley caught the TD passes and the latter made three
interceptions. Other big pass-snatchers: Marvin Harrison (8-76) and Marques
Mason (6-72). Mason (18-90, two) and Kolbe Burrell (18-149, one) combined
for three rushing scores and the offense produced 514 yards. Jeremiah Trotter
registered three of his 13 tackles behind the line, Myles Talley made 11 stops
and Anthony Leneghan mixed a half-sack with three TFLs and a fumble recovery.

190 yards and two TDs (he was untouched on a 55-yarder) while Malik Cooper
passed 9-for-14 for 95 yards and two more scores, one apiece to Sahmir Hagans
and Marvin Harrison. The latter finished the season with 1,033 receiving yards,
becoming the fifth Catholic League player to reach 1,000. He also notched 15
receiving TDs, one short of the CL record (16 by Dougherty's Mickey King
in 2000. The defense barged into the scoring column as Sean Walker blocked
a punt and Maurice Clark raced 20 yards to the end zone.Liam Johnson (13,
four sacks) and Julian Talley (10) led in tackles.

SJ Prep largely frolicked while
capturing its third consecutive state championship
and sixth over eight years. The
Hawks were led by sr. QB Kyle McCord, sr. WR
Marvin Harrison and jr. K Antonio Chadha. McCord passed 21-for-28 for 336
yards and four TDs and finished with city career passing records for yards
(6,887) and TDs (88). Like always, one of his prime targets was Harrison, who
turned three catches into 73 yards and two TDs. He departed with city career
marks for yards with 2,624 and TDs with 37. Chadha, meanwhile, hammered
two field goals and eight PAT through the uprights, and those 14 points enabled
him to tie the city game record. Noble House (rushes) and Malik Cooper (catch,
punt return) added two scores apiece. David Watson and Zavier Atkins halved
12 tackles (and 10 solos), Nick Yagodich had two sacks and Atkins returned an
interception 28 yards.
