CYO All-Star FB Game
Return to Home Page

As you know the game involved CYO players from Delaware, Chester and
Montgomery Counties and a few from Phila.
The Blue team, which was comprised mainly of parishes that attend Bonner,

defeated the Gold team, which is made up of teams that traditionally attend
O'Hara, 35-8.
Halfback John Shaw, younger brother of Lance and Drew scored two first
quarter touchdowns to put the Blue firmly ahead. One a 40 yard dash and the
second a 20 yard pass from Quarterback Marc Verica (headed to Bonner). It
appears that Carroll is the front runner for Shaw but after his performance
all the area schools may try to land him. Joe Rawlings, who will attend
Malvern Prep, converted both two point kick conversions and the quarter
ended favor Blue 16-0.
Linebackers Wayne Donahue and Matt Licci (Bonner) and defensive back Tim
Murtha (Bonner) kept the Gold from putting any drives together and the Blue
offense went back to work in the second quarter. Runs by Frank
Bizzari (Bonner) and Ryan Malarick (Prep) put the Blue in Gold territory. The
drive looked to be stalled but on fourth down tight end Matt Leddy (Prep) and
running Ryan Malarick threw blocks which sprung Shaw for a 30 yard gain
which appeared to break the spirit of the Gold. Blue Quarterback Dan
Leicht (Bonner) then scored on a keeper from 15 yards out and it was 22-0.
Midway through the second quarter Gold team Running Back Tony Cariola broke
free for a 45 yard touchdown run and Tom Hagan (Malvern Prep)kicked the two
point conversion to close the gap to 22-8.
The Gold Team had a chance to cut the gap late in the 2nd quarter after an
Interception by Dennis DiMarco (O'Hara) but the Blue defense held tough on
stops by Defensive end Chris DiGiovanni (Bonner) and tackle Jeremy
Weaver (Bonner) and Donahue and Licci.
In the 3rd quarter Blue running back Wesley Deluca went outside for a 25
yard run set up by guard Myles Huff and tackle Steve Clement both headed to
Bonner. Dan Green (Bonner) then scored from 5 yards out on a nice block by
tackle Pat Dix (Bonner) to put the blue ahead 28-8.
The Blue defense remained outstanding. Defensive backs Matt Williamson,

Steve Dunn, Vince Sculli and Shawn Shepherd, all headed to Bonner, provided
great pass defense against the Gold which was forced to throw to catch up.
In the 4th quarter Frank Bizzari (Bonner) went outside and broke two tackles

on his way to a 20 yard touchdown run. Marc Verica (Bonner) then hit Wide
receiver Mike Tomasco with a conversion pass to make the final score 35-8.
Gold team linebacker Chris McCreight and defensive backs Dave Mendez (Prep)

and Jim Byrne (Prep) provided big hits late in the game.
One of the better battles to watch all day was Defensive end Tom

Hagan (Malvern) against offensive tackle Steve Clement (Bonner) both of whom
appear to be on the fast track to the Varsity.
Bonner is getting 40 of the players in the game, too numerous to mention. I

counted 10 definite for the Prep (1) Matt Leddy a QB/TE/LB, 2) Ryan Malarick
a RB/LB 3) Jim Byrne RB/DB 4) Jim Fee DB 5) Kevin Enders HB/DB 6) Dave
Mendez RB/LB 7) Charlie Noonan RB/LB 8) Pete Johnsen RB/LB 9) Jim McKenzie
T/T 10) Mike McCauley T/T. These two should stay on top of the Red division.
If Carroll ends up with Shaw they will remain on top the Blue. Malvern is
getting a few but they are quality. Episcopal is getting a few and was
second choice for a lot of those going to Prep and Malvern.
