NOTE: All three District 12 teams enjoyed byes in the first round (the weekend immediately following Thanksgiving.)
CLASS AA
Quarterfinal
At South Philly Super Site
West Catholic 32, Pen Argyl 7: David Williams ran 18 times for 167 yards and
one TD. Backup Jalil Shoatz added two rushing scores.
Semifinal
At Coatesville
Lancaster Catholic 23, West Catholic 20: After major
discussion with his assistants on how to face fourth-and-inches at West's 29,
coach Brian Fluck decided to punt. A poor snap, the Burrs' first such mishap of
the season, gave LC the ball on the 16 with 1:09 left and a TD pass followed two
plays later. The sorrow was major in light of the rumors that West almost
certainly would cease to exist come June. Jaleel Reed accounted for 291 yards
from scrimmage, passing 7-for-15 for 204 yards and a TD to Bruce Mapp (4-142)
and rushing 15 times for 87 yards and another score.
CLASS AAA
Quarterfinal
At Northeast
Wood 41, Pottsgrove 22: Wood stormed to 296 yards in the first
half while holding Pottsgrove to 37, and only some late-game TDs made this one
seem even remotely competitive. Joey Monaghan passed 5-for-6 for 135 yards and a
pair of scores to Nate Smith (3-113). Desmon Peoples needed just eight carries
to post 106 yards and two TDs.
Semifinal
At Northeast
Wood 70, Allentown Central Catholic 14: The Vikings had NO
trouble avenging a 49-27 defeat in the same round of the 2010 playoffs,
exploding for 633 yards from scrimmage and 204 on returns (837). Wood owned a
35-0 lead by the first play of the second quarter. Desmon (12-182, two) and
Brandon Peoples (10-133, three) combined for five rushing TDs while Nate Smith
scored on a punt return for the sixth time on the season. The first half
featured 87 plays and lasted 88 minutes. ACC totaled 386 yards from scrimmage
and 162 on returns, so the game total was 1,385.
FINAL
At Hersheypark Stadium
Wood 52, Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt 0: Leaving behind
late-playoffs frustration from 2008, '09 and '10, the Vikings frolicked to give
the Catholic League its third state title in as many years. First cousins Desmon
(18-151, two) and Brandon Peoples (16-172, three) combined for five rushing TDs.
Desmon added two interceptions while Andrew Guckin turned a third pick into a
75-yard TD and Joey Monaghan passed to Nate Smith for a score. Nick Visco added
seven PAT and a 41-yard field goal. The Vikings (14-1) finished with 699 points,
the No. 2 total in city history.
CLASS AAAA
Quarterfinal
At Banko Field, Bethlehem
La Salle 41, Nazareth 33: Tim Wade accumulated 128 yards and
one TD on 18 carries, but in a major surprise he was even more productive on
offense. Though he entered play with only four catches for as many yards in
2011, he exploded for five-131 and two more scores. Matt Magarity passed
15-for-21 for 281 yards and three TDs and frosh Jimmy Herron made a late
interception.
SEMIFINAL
At Northeast
North Penn 21, La Salle 14: After dumping the Knights twice in
2010 and again to start 2011, the Explorers could not find a way to extend the
dominance. The Explorers' TDs came on passes from Matt Magarity (14-for-33, 184)
to Jared Herrmann and Colin Buckley.
