Jim Fenerty
Celebration Page

On Jan. 10, 2017, by a score of 73-46 over SCH Academy, Jim Fenerty notched his 600th win as a high school coach.
Fenerty was 61-138 in eight seasons at Bishop Egan (1982-89) and this win, in Inter-Ac League play, made him 539-214 in 28 seasons at Germantown Academy (1990-2017). In the 2012 season, he missed six games due to a medical issue.
Senior Evan-Eric Longino led the Patriots with 27 points while classmate Kyle McCloskey added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Other scorers: Kahlil Ashley-Diarrah, Brian Basile and Andrew Towne, 6 apiece; Cole Storm and Lucas Traina, 5 apiece; Jordan Keys 2.
The victory raised the Patriots' season record to 11-4.
                                    ----
This story was written after Jim notched his 400th win on Jan. 9, 2007 . . . Help came from his son, Jimmy, who made his varsity debut.

By Ted Silary

On a day of special numbers for coach Jim Fenerty, five meant more than 400.
That was easy to determine even over a land-line telephone.
"Hold on . . . " Very long pause. "I think there's a problem with the line." Another very long pause. "Sorry about that."
The "problem" was churning emotions of joy.
Fenerty, who's in his 26th season as a high school basketball coach (18 at Germantown Academy; eight before that at the old Bishop Egan), yesterday lifted his career record to 400 -273 as the Patriots powered to a 64-36 Inter-Ac League win over visiting Chestnut Hill Academy.
The last five points were scored by his son, Jimmy, a sophomore and former ballboy, who was making his first varsity appearance.
The first special moment was a left-wing trey. Then came the conversion of a double-bonus in the waning moments.
"God has always been with me through my coaching career. He was really with me today," Fenerty said. "It was like something out of 'The Natural. '
"As the point guard, Jimmy was just running our offense. But he stepped up and took that three. Knocked it down with a swish. On the line, he swished the first one. The second one hit the rim, went straight up, came back down, right through the net. Too much to believe."
Fenerty said he realized he was on the doorstep of this milestone only last Saturday, after the Patriots conquered Haverford School and he was given a giant-sized hug by his 13-year-old daughter, Erin.
"What was that for?" he asked.
  "That's 399!" she answered.
Shortly thereafter, Fenerty said he made the decision to put Jimmy in uniform for what had a great chance of being No. 400.
"I'm guilty. Did it on purpose," he said, laughing. "For lots of years, he heard his old man being called bad names in the stands. I wanted him with me today. I did this for all the coaches who get such wonderful support from their families. Without the sacrifices, none of us could do this.
"I know Jimmy wanted to get promoted all season, but he wanted to earn it. He was hesitant about dressing today, but I think he showed he earned it. If not for a little bit of a sports hernia he was battling, he would have been up a couple of
weeks ago."

Fenerty, 56, who missed a 9-week stretch of school in the fall after having both knees replaced, said his wife, Mary,
stepdaughter, Jessica, and parents, Bud and Mary, were also in attendance.
"Right after the game," he said, "my parents' first words were, 'You should play that kid more often. ' "
At long-struggling Egan, Fenerty went 61-138. In part because future major league handyman Joe McEwing, also an
excellent hoopster, was among his returnees, and he relished the chance to finally enjoy success, he hesitated in jumping
to GA.
"But even the Egan people told me I should take it," he said. "GA has been great to me. Just the wonderful education for
my kids, which I never could have afforded, would have been enough."
Assistant Craig Conlin said of Fenerty, "Jim is a kind and good man and has been a tremendous mentor to me."
D.J. Johnston (12), Joe Hill (12 points, five assists), and Steve Roma (10) scored in double figures for GA. Hill was the
starting point guard with La Salle signee Kyle Griffin battling illness. Roma added eight rebounds. Cameron Ayers mixed
six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
After the feat was announced to the fans, Jimmy presented his father the game ball.
"The whole day was great," he said. "It was even better that I got to be a part of it."

Below are the players who helped Jim Fenerty accumulate 626 wins at the high school level.
The year indicates the player's final season. Most were seniors. Some transferred and some were
underclassmen who did not play in the following season. The '89 and '19 teams include
multiple underclassmen . . .
