   “Back at the Scene”

I know that you have all heard about Wayne Ellington but the
folks at the Philly USA basketball program want you to go back in your
memories to a couple years ago. To be exact, when a skinny guard from
Douglasville, PA came down to the Philly USA All-City Classic to
participate in the Philly USA All-City Classic with future high school
teammate Gerald Henderson.
Among the spectators, Episcopal Head Coach, Dan Dougherty
trying to sneak a peak at the guard he kept hearing about from local
basketball experts who were whispering “the kid coming to your school,
he can really play.” So the skinny guard from Douglassville, PA
performed well. Ellington exploded on the local and national basketball
scenes with a breathtaking 33 point, 8 rebound, 7 assist performance.
He has been dominating local basketball headlines ever since.
This year Ellington will try to be the first three time Philly
USA All-City Classic Most Valuable Player. The 6’5 wing guard from
Episcopal Academy will tandem with his equally skilled wing teammate
Gerald Henderson as they do battle with Neumann-Goretti’s Earl Pettis
and DJ. Rivera. Yes, there will be five on five action and, yes they are
two more games, but the Episcopal–Neumann match-up has some history.
Episcopal and Neumann were the top two teams in the area this year, but
did not play each other. Ellington and Henderson squared off against
Pettis and Rivera at the Coaches vs. Cancer Doubleheader at Conshohocken
and according too many the Neumann duo more than held their own. So we
can get to answer some questions: are Wayne and Gerald still the best
duo in the city, state or even country or is it Earl and DJ.
Gerald and Wayne have signed with respective ACC powers,
Duke and North Carolina. Pettis and Rivera are being recruited by a
cadre of Big East and ACC schools and they too will likely sign letter
of intent with major programs.
Among other things, the All-City Classic is considered the
“top one day basketball event in Philadelphia” by noted recruiting guru
Tom Konchalski of HSBI. This year at 26th and Moore, the Old Neumann
High School, the All-City Classic will take place. On June 3rd, 6:00pm
the event begins with the area’s best freshmen taking the floor. The
sophomore game to follow and then the main attraction. Local
businessman and philanthropist Paul King will be honored.
