HOMETOWN PHILLY COLLEGE BASEBALL AWARDS BACK FOR EIGHTH SEASON
    When Ted Silary started this site some 11.5 million hits ago, it was devoted to the athletes of the Philadelphia Public, Catholic and Inter-Academic Leagues. For the eighth straight season, The Hometown Philly College Baseball Awards will recognize accomplishments of these local players at the collegiate level on tedsilary.com.
    In 2013, our guys are scattered up and down the east coast from Maine to Florida, and beyond! The Big East is represented by five teams with Philly guys: Villanova, Louisville, Pitt, Rutgers and Seton Hall. The ACC also has five teams: Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest. A complete roster including high school affiliations will be forthcoming.

2013 Hometown Philly All-Star & All-Rookie Selections
The 2013
Hometown Philly Awards were announced at the recent SABR convention in downtown Philly. Congrats go out to the following honorees: Ty Young (Louisville/Malvern Prep) - Hometown Philly Player of the Year, Kurt Sowa (Rider/Father Judge) - Hometown Philly Pitcher of the Year, Nathaniel Coronado (Camden County CC/Edison) - Hometown Philly Rookie of the Year, and Jonathan Motts (Lackawanna College/Lansdale Catholic) - Hometown Philly Rookie Pitcher of the Year.

The eighth annual Hometown Philly All-Star Teams and All-Rookie Team were selected from a roster of 207 former baseball players from the three Philly high school leagues (Catholic, Public and Inter-Academic). Those players attended exactly 100 different colleges, and included 78 freshmen. Best wishes to all of the honorees and their devoted families, teammates, coaches, managers, and trainers. Once again, thanks to the man himself, Ted Silary, for always touting "our guys." And just in case we don’t cross paths again, it has been my true honor and privilege to report on the student-athletes from our area. But stay tuned ... RS

COMING UP ON HOMETOWN PHILLY
    With North Carolina and Louisville getting bounced out of the College World Series, the 2013 Hometown Philly college baseball season is officially over. Good luck to UCLA and Mississippi State in the finals. Two postings remain for this season's edition: 1) final stats, including batting and pitching leaders, and 2) the annual July 4th announcement of the Hometown Philly Awards, including the Player, Pitcher and Rookies of the Year.
    Now enjoy the 2013 Home Run List followed by another irrelevant list of wacky college baseball names.

Hometown Philly Postseason Report & MLB Draft Recap - June 11, 2013
    A lot has happened in college baseball since we last met, so time to get caught up. Last year, it was the West Chester Golden Rams that represented the Delaware Valley with a D-II national championship. This year, that honor belongs to the Gloucester County College Roadrunners. They captured their second national Junior College championship in the last four years, pretty much blowing away all of their competition. The Roadrunners finished with an incredible 49-3 record (.942 win%), including a ten-game win streak to finish off the season. Archbishop Ryan's Eric Frain was a major contributor. He batted .391 on the season, and was chosen to the Second-Team All-Garden State Athletic Conference. For his postseason play, Eric was one of four Gloucester players selected to the NJCAA Division III World Series All-Tournament Team.

WORLD SERIES PARTICIPANT - NORTH CAROLINA (57-10)
Sunday, June 16 at 3 pm vs NC State ... Tuesday, June 18 vs LSU or UCLA, time TBD
MIKE ZOLK, UNC soph 2B (Neumann-Goretti)
    Even though Mike "Zoom" Zolk's batting average is not among the team leaders, the Tar Heels would not be going to Omaha if not for his big stick. UNC, the top-seeded team in the NCAA Tournament, was leading their decisive regional championship game, 6-2, in the eighth inning against upstart Florida Atlantic. But FAU exploded for a six-spot in the ninth inning to take an 8-6 lead, putting UNC in a perilous position. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Zolk laced a two-run single down the right field line, and the game was tied. In the 12th, FAU took the lead, 11-8, with a 3-run HR. UNC cut the deficit to 11-10 with a pair of bases loaded walks in the bottom of the 12th. Zolk promptly tied the game once again, this time with an opposite field single to left. The Tar Heels would win in 13 innings, 12-11, to advance to the Super Regionals.
    After winning the first game in the best-of-three Super Regional vs rival South Carolina, the Tar Heels were shutout in game two, forcing a decisive game three. UNC would prevail, 5-4, as ACC Pitcher of the Year Kent Emmanuel came out of the pen to get the final two outs.
    In addition to Zolk, UNC has another local product: Chris O'Brien, soph LHP (Malvern Prep) who appeared in four games during the regular season.

TY YOUNG, Louisville jr 3B (Malvern Prep)
    Louisville is headed to just its second-ever College World Series, which is one more than their Saturday opponent, Indiana. The Cardinals had a program record-setting 51 wins this season. They went 3-0 to win the Louisville Regional, and then shocked the #2 overall tournament seed, Vanderbilt, with a pair of wins on Vandy's home field.
    Malvern Prep's Ty Young leads the team with a .339 batting average, and also has 26 steals. The Cardinals have 150 stolen bases this season, second in the nation. Also getting some playing time is freshman 1B Danny Rosenbaum, out of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and Plymouth-Whitemarsh.

WILL MINDERJAHN
MISERICORDIA SR LHP (ARCHBISHOP WOOD)
HT: 6-0.....LANSDALE, PA
Although the Misericordia Cougars were eliminated in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, Will Minderjahn certainly did his best to help the team reach the D-III World Series in Grand Chute, WI. After improving his season record to 5-0 with a win in the Freedom Conference Championships, Will won a game at the Regionals. He couldn't have picked a better time to throw his first career shutout and nine-inning complete-game. In the 6-0 elimination-game win against Alvernia, he allowed four hits, four walks, and fanned two. Misericordia would eventually be bounced out by Keystone College, which lost to Kean, for the bid to the D-III World Series.

* Last Week: 5 GP, .438 BA (7-16), HR, 2 RBI, 4 R, 3 doubles, .813 SLG%
As Neumann College transitioned into Neumann University over the last decade, the baseball program transitioned as well. The Knights won only 25% of their games during a nine-year span from 2000 to 2008. But with the arrival of head coach John Fleming in 2009, the Knights have become a force, winning 62% of their games during his tenure. One of the backbones the past four years has been catcher Joey Armata. He came up big once again last week, launching a 2-run homer helping Neumann to a CSAC Conference tournament win. Neumann (29-13) lost to Keystone in the CSAC championship game, and hope to receive an NCAA at-large berth.

SAINT JOSEPH'S SR RHP (ST. JOSEPH'S PREP)
HT: 6-0.....WT: 180.....BERWYN, PA
What a glorious career thus far for St. Joe's righty Kyle Mullen, and he still has a couple of weeks left. While focus should always be on team goals, it certainly is nice to be recognized for individual feats. Kyle had already set Hawks' records for career innings pitched and career strikeouts during this season. With his 2-1 victory against Xavier last Friday, Mullen became the program's all-time leader with his 20th win. In that game, he pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits, and struck out ten.

Hometown Hiatus is History
    The cut-off of federal funds, combined with coverage of opening week of the Phillies season, pre-empted the Hometown Philly Awards for games played March 25 to March 31. But after the panel convened, this was the consensus: why should Joe Forcellini, Robert Della Polla and Devin McCann suffer because of bureaucrats and Erik Kratz? Regular features return next week.

    Not only did Nick Manai hit safely in all five games last week, but they were all of the multi-hit variety (2, 2, 4, 3, 2). But he's been hard to retire all season. Nick started 2013 with an 8-game hit streak, and has reached base safely in 19 out of 20 games this season. In addition, he has not gone hitless in back-to-back games. For his efforts out of the two-hole, Nick was selected as the Southern Athletic Association Player of the Week.

RUSSELL TROJAN
PHILADELPHIA U SR RHP (CARDINAL O'HARA)
HT: 6-1.....WT: 215.....SPRINGFIELD, PA
    The Philadelphia University Rams are on a five-game winning streak for the first time since 2010, and are undefeated (3-0) in conference play. The old man, senior Russell Trojan, showed the kids how it's done, picking up a pair of wins last week. He pitched a scoreless top of the tenth vs Chestnut Hill College last Wednesday, and earned the win when John Sczepanski (La Salle HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Same combo three days later: Sczepanski walk-off, two-run single made a winner out of Trojan (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 K). In that game vs Concordia, Russell notched his 100th career strikeout.
Honorable Mention:

NATE CORONADO
CAMDEN COUNTY COLLEGE SS (EDISON)
HT: 6-2.....WT: 205.....PHILADELPHIA, PA
    Edison High School had never reached the Philadelphia Public League championship in its first 54 years of existence. In fact, they had lost 23 consecutive times in the playoffs. But with Nate's bat (plenty of extra-base hits in it), and his cannon arm, Edison made school history in 2011. Along with brother Nelson, and many other teammates from the Olney Redbirds, the Owls stormed to The Pub championship game, but lost to perennial favorite Frankford. Nathaniel is continuing to make a splash at the next level. With the Camden County College Cougars off to a 12-2 start, he has been one of the focal points of a potent offensive attack. In four games last week, he batted .462 (6-13), with six runs, five RBI and three stolen bases. (season: 14 GP, .477 BA, 16 RBI, team-high 9 XBH)
Honorable Mention:
* Desmond Drummond
, Philadelphia U 3B/RHP (GAMP) CG win in first collegiate start: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 5 K vs Lincoln U
* Eric Close, West Chester RHP (Haverford School) Won first collegiate start vs Minnesota-Duluth: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 K

* Sean McCloskey, Bloomsburg RHP (Wood) March 18 at Trevecca Nazarene (TN): 3 relief IP, 1 R, 3 K, left with 7-1 lead in 8-7 loss
History on Hawk Hill
    Matt Simonelli never thought he would be a footnote in Philadelphia college baseball history. On February 26, 2010, The Citadel's right fielder struck out in the eighth inning against a Saint Joseph's freshman making his collegiate debut. Kyle Mullen (St. Joseph's Prep) recorded the K with a scoreless inning of relief. Four years later, Temple's Matt Elko became the companion footnote. He whiffed against Mullen in the sixth inning of a Hawks 8-3 win last Friday. It was the 213th strikeout of his career, setting Saint Joseph's all-time record, which was set 47 years earlier. The righty now has 16 career wins (tied with Jamie Moyer), four shy of another school all-time record.
Home Runs Last Week:

* Nick Ferdinand (4), Delaware sr OF (Archbishop Ryan) single, double, homer, 13-9 win vs Wilmington, March 19

* Last Week: 4 GP, .444 BA (8-18), HR, 3 RBI, 8 R
Of the 193 players on this season's Hometown Philly roster, nobody stepped up to and crossed the plate earlier than Albert Baur. His sophomore season began all the way back on February 1 with a home game at Newberry, SC. He singled in the opener, and went on to a seven-game hitting streak. A model of consistency at getting on base all season, Baur has also provided some pop with 8 doubles and three home runs. He's scored twelve runs in his last ten games, with a run scored in five straight games and eight of his last ten.

* March 17 vs Chicago State: Complete game one-hit shutout win, 7-0. 9 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K
Patience finally paid off big-time for Shawn O'Neill, and the La Salle Explorers will be the benefactors this season and next. After taking classes and playing A-10 baseball at Richmond for two seasons, O'Neill headed up I-95 and back home. He had to sit out the 2012 season due to NCAA transfer rules, then struggled through his first two starts of 2013. But he put it all together in one nine inning game played in less than ideal conditions: 40° and windy. His ten strikeouts represented a career high. (Career: 42 appearances, 9 starts, 1 CG)

BEN PATTI
WESLEY LHP (CARDINAL O'HARA)
HT: 6-0.....WT: 190.....GARNET VALLEY, PA
The Wesley Wolverines are off to a fast start winning ten of their first thirteen games, and got a boost when St. Patti's day came early last week. Making his collegiate debut on March 12, Ben Patti made it a memorable one by recording the win. He went five innings in the start, allowing an earned run, with no walks and two strikeouts. He settled down after a shaky first inning, and the offense pounded out 15 hits in the 16-2 win against Hilbert College (NY).

* Last Week: 4 GP, .450 BA (9-20), HR, 6 RBI, 6 R, 4 Doubles
The Fightin' Blue Hens couldn't want anything more out of a leadoff hitter. Just get on base! That's exactly what Joe Giacchino has done for the Delaware offense this season. Last week, by hitting in all four games, Joe extended his hit streak to nine games (season: hit safely 12 out of 13 GP). Joe is also providing some pop, with extra base hits in each of last five games. His .625 SLG% is third on the team behind Cherry Hill's Jimmy Yezzo (22-game hit streak snapped Saturday) and Nick Ferdinand (Archbishop Ryan).

HOMETOWN PHILLY PREVIEW AND REVIEW
    While this will be the last weekend off for Division-I baseball programs, some D-II teams open up this Friday, highlighted by West Chester, the defending national champions. The Golden Rams go down to South Carolina to play Lander University in a three-game series. Also getting underway are three teams competing in The Builder Invitational in Newport News, Virginia: Kutztown, Bloomsburg and Lock Haven. Others hitting the diamond this weekend include Millersville and Concord (WV).
    West Chester entered the 2012 PSAC Tournament with a 33-9 record, and after a second round loss, went on to win their next four games and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. They swept their Atlantic Regional, and then won all four games in The College World Series, culminating in a 9-0 shutout against Delta State, earning the Golden Rams their first national championship in Division II. They finished with a school record 46 wins. Returning are a pair of pitchers: senior lefty Conor Kerins (Bonner-Prendergast) and junior righty Matt McAllister (Archbishop Wood). Joining them are a trio of freshmen: 6'7" RHP Eric Close (Haverford School), C/OF Justin Roman (Archbishop Carroll) and RHP/1B Ronnie Scull (Bonner).
    Representing Philly at The Builder Invitational will be five players. Kutztown LHP Tom Neely (Archbishop Ryan) returns for his senior season. In 2012, Neely went 7-1 with a 2.16 ERA and one save. Bloomsburg has two freshmen from The Catholic League: redshirt RHP Sean McCloskey (Wood) and catcher Corey Baiada, who played such an important role as La Salle High School went on to District 12's first state baseball championship ever. Lock Haven's roster includes soph LHP Joe Nestor (Bonner), who sat out after transferring from La Salle University.
    Millersville will play a three-game set at Winston-Salem State. On this season's roster is redshirt freshman SS AJ Koscelansky, who graduated from Pope John II High School. He attended Kennedy-Kenrick, which was shut down in 2010. Concord soph LHP Kevin Mack (Archbishop Ryan) returns after appearing in 11 games last season.
A LOOK AT LAST WEEK
    Although there was limited action last weekend, two players made a lot of noise. Neumann-Goretti's Albert Baur hit safely in all six games for Newberry College (SC). The soph 1B/3B went 13-28 (.464) with four doubles and eight runs scored. Roman Catholic's Anthony Ortiz played two seasons at Harford Community College (MD). Now he is at Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) and he continues to hit college pitching. In three games, Anthony went 5-9 (.556), and also had two walks and a HBP. For his career, he is hitting .387 with a .450 OBP.
    Weekly awards for player, pitcher and rookie of the week will start in a few weeks.
