Hometown Philly College Baseball
  Hey folks, it's been a blast. Just wanted to give high school and college baseball players from our area a little bit more publicity. Thanks to ALL of the players, coaches, families, friends and fans...and especially the man himself, Ted Silary
. Here now are the Top Ten Events from the past 13 seasons (2006-2018).

10. ALL IN THE (AMARO) FAMILY
Playing and Coaching Tradition

Ruben Amaro Sr. and Ruben Amaro Jr. are household names in Philly for their Major League service. The Amaro family also made their mark at the collegiate level.
* Robert Amaro, son of Dave Amaro, played three seasons at the University of Virginia, before transfering back home to play first base and third base for the Temple Owls in 2014. In what would be the final season of the 87-year old program, the Penn Charter grad led the team with with a .324 BA, 58 hits and 39 RBI. He was a 2014 All-Big 5 Team selection.
* Andrew Amaro, nephew of former Phillies GM Ruben Jr. started his career at the University of Maryland before spending his senior season at Division II powerhouse University of Tampa. He was a starter and team leader for the Spartans who went on to win it all, the 2015 Division II World Series champions. The former Penn Charter star is now an assistant coach for the La Salle University Explorers.

9. DANDY VANDY
Commodores win first national team championship in any sport

Vanderbilt was one of 13 charter members when the SEC was born in 1933. Although they had many individual honors and league championships, the Commodores had zero team national championships until the spring/summer of 2014. With a 17-13 conference record, Vandy picked it up in the NCAA Tournament sweeping the Nashville Regional beating Oregon, Clemson and Xavier. They topped Stanford in the SuperRegional, advancing to the College World Series. After dispatching Louisville, UC-Irvine and Texas, Vanderbilt finally reached the World Series and upset #3 national seed Virginia to claim the first team national championship in school history. Chris Harvey (Germantown Academy) was a junior reserve catcher that season, and was crucial in Game 1, going 1-2 with an RBI in a 9-8 squeaker. In Game 2, Chris had a sac fly. In Game 3, Vanderbilt University won a 3-2 nailbiter...and The Dog Pile was on.

8. A BAY TO REMEMBER
Three Threes in a baseball game?

Capping off an outstanding career at Prince George's CC (MD), Neumann-Goretti's Bay To stepped out in style, though in a losng effort. In the JUCO Division D Championship, Rockingham County defeated Prince George's Owls, 17-15. To, a two-time All-Region First Teamer, went 5-for-5 with a trio of 3-run homers, yep...9 ribbies. Bay played 85 games in 2 seasons, hitting a whopping .403 with 20 HR, 90 RBI, 93 R

7. RICHMOND POWER COMPANY
Chris Cowell goes yard, goes yard again...and again...and again...

Richmond catcher Chris Cowell (Malvern Prep) had hit 25 career home runs for the Spiders in his first three seasons. But as a senior in 2012, Chris hit 20 HR, tied for second in the nation. In the Atlantic 10, nobody else hit more than ten homers that season. Chris was chosen to the 2012 First Team All-Atlantic 10, and was a late round pick by the Colorado Rockies in the 2012 draft

6. BIG FIVE HIGHLIGHTS
Achievements to Remember from Philadelphia institutions

* La Salle - John Malloy
(Conwell-Egan) set La Salle career records with 275 hits and 59 doubles (2007-10)...three-time All-Big Five selection
* Penn -
Tom Grandieri (Malvern Prep) batted .360 in Quakers' career (2008-10), and set school all-time record with 49 doubles
* St. Joe's - Kyle Mullen
(St. Joseph's Prep) set Hawks' all-time record in wins, strikeouts and innings (2010-13)...2012 Big Five Pitcher of the Year
* Villanova - Mike Francisco
(Malvern Prep) graduated as Nova's all-time leader with 82 appearances and 20 saves (2008-11)
* Temple - Sean Barksdale
(Cardinal O'Hara) Owls career leader with 162 RBI (2007-09). Two-time Big Five Player of the Year...Late-round selection by Astros, 2009 draft

5. DUKE BLUE DEVILS HIGH DRAFT BACK (baseball, not basketball)
La Salle College High School alum Jimmy Herron selected in third round

Everybody knows about Christian Laettner and Grant Hill and maybe Jahlil Okafor, and even Alaa Abdelnaby. Everybody knows about Coach K. You ever heard of Chris Pollard? Probably not, but he coached Duke baseball to a school-record 45 wins this season, a record 18 wins in the ACC, and a trip to their first ever SuperRegional. Their two NCAA Tournament appearances in the last three seasons were the first time they participated since the Kennedy administration.
The Blue Devils' table-setter was Jimmy Herron (La Salle HS). His 35-game on-base streak coincided with Duke finally gaining national attention. Jimmy is the only player in school history with 50-plus career doubles and 50-plus career stolen bases. Batting over .300 in each of his three seasons, Jimmy was rewarded by being chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the 2018 draft.

4. JERSEY PRIDE
Roadrunners been there...done that, while the Dukes compete on the Big Stage

* Gloucester County College, now known as Rowan College Gloucester County, has been a perennial post season dynamo winning seven national titles, most recently in 2013. That season, the Roadrunners blew away most of their competition, finishing with an incredible 49-3 record (.942 win%), including a ten-game win streak to finish off the season. Archbishop Ryan's Eric Frain was a major contributor. He batted .391 on the season, and was chosen to the Second-Team All-Garden State Athletic Conference. For his postseason play, Eric was one of four Gloucester players selected to the NJCAA Division III World Series All-Tournament Team.
* Cumberland County College has turned one of the nation's elite junior college programs under head coach Keith Gorman
. In seven seasons at the helm, Gorman has compiled a 269-86 record (.760). The Dukes reached #1 in the polls in 2014, the first time ever for the program, and finished that season as World Series runners-up. The late Devin McCann  (Cardinal O'Hara) was a major force, batting .322 in two season at Cumberland. In 2017, the Dukes reeled off 33 straight wins, the longest win streak that season in any college baseball division. They finished with 55 wins, a New Jersey single-season college record, and finished third in the JUCO World Series. The team was led by a trio of Cardinal O'Hara alums:
Will Latcham, , who went on to pitch for Coastal Carolina...
John Banes, who then played for the Delaware Blue Hens...
Chris Salvey, a D-II All-American at Lincoln Memorial University (TN).

3. THE GOLDEN (RAMS) RULE
Two titles in six seasons for West Chester

So many college programs have great regular seasons, but realize how difficult it is to advance in postseason. The West Chester Golden Rams were able to climb that mountain, not once, but twice in a six-year span under head coach Jad Prachniak.
* 2012: A team that finished the regular season with a 33-9 record, West Chester went on to win five of their six contests in the PSAC Tournament, including the title game vs Kutztown. The Golden Rams then swept the NCAA Atlantic Regional, and then swept the World Series, culminating with a shutout win vs Delta State to claim their first D-II national championship with a 46-10 record. "Our Guys" were represented by LHP Conor Kerins (Bonner), RHP Matt McAllister (Wood). West Chester's team leader in 2012 is now in the majors...Joey Wendle (Tampa Bay Rays)

* 2017: Just five seasons later, West Chester again finished the regular season with a 33-9 record. Even though they were knocked out of the PSAC Tournament by top-ranked Mercyhurst, the Golden Rams were selected to the NCAA Tournament field, where they repeated their 2012 magic by sweeping the NCAA Atlantic Regional, and sweeping all four games in the World Series, with a championship game win vs Cal-San Diego. The Golden Rams remain the only Pennsylvania college at any level to win a nationl baseball championship. Closer Josh McClain (Tunkhannock, PA) was named the Most Outstanding player, while Philly guys Nick Bateman (Malvern Prep), Eric Close  (Haverford School), Ian Conwell (Lansdale Catholic), Jon Kinee (Neuman-Goretti), Joe Peluso  (La Salle HS) and Brian Verratti (Neumann-Goretti) all received championship rings.

2. STEPHEN STRASBURG SMASHED
Malvern Prep's Gosselin gets noticed

The star attraction in the 2009 NCAA Irvine Regionals was junior phenom RHP Stephen Strasburg ...and deservedly so. The "once in a generation prospect" from San Diego State entered double-elimination play vs Virginia with a 13-0 record. The Aztecs, coached by the late, great Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn , were making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 19 years. However, it was Malvern Prep's Phil Gosselin, who stole the spotlight. The sophomore All-ACC First Team selection from UVA, hit "The Shot That Was Heard Round the Delaware Valley." Yeppers, Phil took Strasburg deep...deep...deep to left field for a stunning first inning home run. The Cavaliers tacked on another run vs Strasburg, who finished the game with 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 15 K. Final score - UVA 5, SDSU 1. Strasburg ended his final collegiate season with a 13-1 record.
  "I was going up there looking for a fastball," Gosselin said. "I knew he was going to be around the plate. Like coach said, he doesn't walk many guys and has real good command but that was one of the few mistakes that he made. He left the ball over the plate and supplied most of the power and I just had to put my barrel on it."

1. WHATTA CAREER
Three-time National Championship Finalist, and Two-Time National Champion

The South Carolina Gamecocks had never won a College Baseball World Series. That all changed in 2010, the freshman season of 1B/3B Christian Walker (Kennedy-Kennedy), who was fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time. Walker was a huge middle of the lineup presence as South Carolina would appear in the College World Series Finals in each of his three seasons. Christian was named to the College World Series All-Tournament Teams in 2010, 2011 & 2012, and was selected in the fourth round by the Baltimore Orioles after his junior season.
* 2010...Gamecocks win first-ever NCAA Championship as Whit Merrifield (Kansas City Royals) delivers 11th inning walkoff single vs UCLA
* 2011...South Carolina defends its title beating Florida in the finals. Walker played the entire World Series with a broken hamate bone, and out-performed teammate star CF
Jackie Bradley Jr.
* 2012...USC falls in attempt to three-peat, bowing to Arizona in the finals. Christian Walker finishes with 28 career World Series hits, tying Dustin Ackley  (North Carolina) for the all-time record.
