The 10th annual Delchestmont Conference CYO 8th grade football
All-Star Game was held Saturday night April 24th at Upper Darby High
School. The game involved players from Delaware, Montgomery and Chester
Counties and a few from Phila, PA who were selected by the coaches.
There were over 1,800 people at the game, which helped raise money
for the Ronald McDonald House. The game was also broadcast live for the
first time.
In an offensive shootout, the Blue team, which was comprised of
parishes that have traditionally attended Carroll and Bonner, outlasted the Gold
team, which was made up of parishes that have traditionally attended
O'Hara and Bishop Shanahan, 39-34.
Episcopal Academy, Haverford School and Malvern Prep, all of the
Inter-Ac League, will be getting some of this year's key players, as will
St. Joe's Prep.
The Blue team kicked off to the Gold and Joe Coffey (Malvern) had a
short return before being brought down by Brendan O'Donnell (Prep). The
teams then traded possessions before the fireworks began.
On the first play of their second possession, halfback Jim
McGoldrick (Episcopal) put the The Gold team on the board with a 65-yard
run around end, getting nice blocks by tight end Tom Will (Bonner) and
guard Joe Arci (O'Hara). Kicker Pat Daley (O'Hara) made it 8-0 by
splitting the uprights.
The Gold then kicked off to the Blue and Matt Thomas (Malvern) broke
through the Blue wall to make the tackle. After two short gains on
running plays, Quarterback Matt McGillian of the Blue looked to pass but
was dropped for an 8-yard loss by Matt Thomas and the Blue was forced
to Punt.
The Gold took over and rotated in fresh personnel in the backfield.
The Blue defense stiffened and forced a four and out.
The Blue gave the ball to fullback Dave Wisely (Haverford School)
who followed tackle Matt Conboy (Malvern) for 7-yards. Halfback Michael
McCarthy (Prep) also picked up 7-yards and the Blue began to move.
Quarterback Aaron Haas (Prep) got onto the action and picked up 5-yards
on a keeper before being brought down by Gold defensive back Dan
Hilferty (Episcopal). Wisely then broke several tackles in picking up
another 7 yards to end the 1st quarter with the Gold ahead 8-0. The Blue
drive continued with Hass finding a wide open tight end Brian
Timlin (Bonner) for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Chris Ciccone made it
8-8.
Ciccone then kicked off to the Gold deepman Jim McGoldrick, who
fielded the line drive kick off the bounce at the 30 yard line and ran
past several Blue defenders before being tackled at midfield. Nick
Vaders bolted around end for 20 yards before being brought down on a
touchdown saving tackle by Blue defensive back Paul Barycki (Bonner).
Barycki again had to step up and bring down Joe Coffey who was sprung by
a block by tackle John Scargall (Malvern)iafter another first down run.
The Gold Drive stalled just inside the 20-yard line.
Back on offense again, Dave Wisely got outside and ran 40-yards
before linebacker Chris Crowding (Malvern) brought him down from behind.
Several plays later halfback Randy Rice (Haverford School) put the Blue
ahead with a minute left in the half when he ran in from the 5-yard
line. Chris Ciccone was again perfect on the kick to make it 16-8.
The Blue tried an onside kick which was covered by the Gold. After
two short gains, Jim McGoldrick took off on a sweep around the right
side and then cut back and dashed 35-yards before being pushed out of
bounds at the 20 yard line with a few seconds left. The Blue held and
wet to halftime with the 16-8 lead.
In 3rd quarter action, the Blue received the kickoff and was
driving, mixing the run and pass when Gold defensive back Sean
Saylor (O'Hara) picked off a pass and returned it 30-yards into Blue
territory. The Blue defense stepped up led by linebacker Mike
Grunde (O'Hara) and defensive back Chris Mailey (Prep) to thwart the Gold
drive.
With the ball back, fullback Nick Dolente (Malvern) of the Blue tried
running up the middle but was stopped by defensive end Phil
Congialdi (Malvern). Randy Rice tried to go outside but had no better
luck as Gold defensive back Matt Byrne (Episcopal) came flying up to drop
him and the Gold took over.
Fullback Tim Primick (Prep) picked up 5-yards on first down for the
Gold following the blocking of center Mike Holland (O'Hara). Halfback
Kevin Ward (O'Hara)then ran behind guard Kevin Grant (O'Hara) and tackle
Elliot Faust (Episcopal) for another 4-yards. Jim McGoldrick then ran
around end and cut back on his way to a 65-yard touchdown run to cut the
gap to 16-14.
The Blue countered back with a nice drive capped off by a
quarterback keeper from Aaron Haas from two yards out to increase its
lead to 24-14 with the conversion once again by Chris Ciccone.
The Gold went right back to work and quarterback Ryan
Nassib (Malvern) rolled out and found Jim McGoldrick coming out of the
backfield with a perfectly thrown pass for a 20 yard gain. Joe Coffey
then bolted through the line for a 50-yard touchdown run to cut the Blue
lead to 24-20.
QB Matt McGillian of the Blue then showed his arm strength with a
45-yard bullet to Mike Damico (Bonner) for a touchdown, stretching the
lead to 32-20.
The Blue again tried an onside kick which was covered by the Gold.
Jordan Lawrence (Malvern) came in at QB for the Gold and began to drive
his team down the field. Joe Coffey picked up 5-yards inside and then
did it again. Jim McGoldrick went around end for another 25-yards,
ending the 3rd quarter. Coffey then broke several tackles before scoring
his second touchdown of the night. Pat Daley booted the conversion kick
to cut the deficit to 32-28.
Quarterback Iggy Schmitt (Bonner) also showed he could deliver when
he passed to split end Sean Curry (O'Hara) on a long 3rd down and 15 to
keep a drive going for the Blue. Halfback Michael McCarthy was stopped
by Gold linebacker Mark Rivello. McCarthy then tried to go outside but
was stopped by defensive end Nick Parise and defensive back Dan
Hilferty. Schmitt then passed to fullback Nick Dolente open in the
endzone for a touchdown and a 39-28 lead with just over 4 minutes
remaining.
The Gold now needed two scores quickly to win. QB Ryan Nassib
dropped back and once again spotted Jim McGoldrick racing out of the
backfield and hit him in stride for his third touchdown of the game, a
65-yard completion to cut the lead to 39-34.
The Gold team onsides kick was covered by the Blue who were then
able to run out the clock and prevailed by the final score of 39-34..
Once again, the Inter-Ac has done very well this year. Coffey,
Dolente, Nassib, Thomas and Congialdi will help try to keep Malvern at
the top. Byrne, Hilferty, Faust and McGoldrick add to a strong Episcopal
team. Wisely and Rice should help The Haverford School.
In the Catholic League O'Hara has done very well with this years
group. Bonner will also be getting some fine players and St. Joe's Prep
is adding skill players Haas, McCarthy, Mailey and Primick.
