HOMETOWN PHILLY COLLEGE BASEBALL AWARDS CELEBRATE A DECADE OF EXCELLENCE

College baseball players from the three Philly High School Leagues will once again be showcased as The Hometown Philly College Baseball Awards return for its' tenth season. College football and hoops get all of the glory, and this is a chance for college baseball players to “get their due.” Hometown Philly is devoted to the athletes and fans of the Philadelphia Inter-Academic, Public and Catholic Leagues who have taken their talents to the next level, and will be featured weekly on the top-rated Philly high school sports website, tedsilary.com.

In 2015, our guys are scattered up and down the east coast from Maine to snowy Boston, through the Mid-Atlantic, to the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. From there, they stretch out to Mississippi, Oklahoma and Kentucky, go north to frigid Chicago, and then out to the west coast. As always, thanks to the man who has created and maintains a history of Philadelphia high school sports, Ted Silary.

A complete roster including high school affiliations will be forthcoming. Last season, there were 187 universities with players on their rosters from the previous nine seasons. This year, there will be at least an additional 16 colleges to have a Philly players on their roster.

February 19, 2015

Even though record snowfalls and low temperatures have ruled this winter, college baseball has been in action since late January. So here is a quick update on what’s been happening.

Top Performers:

Albert Baur, Newberry (SC) sr 1B (Neumann-Goretti)
Albert was not selected in last June’s MLB draft, and went back for his senior college season. At this pace, he is making many scouts take notice. He has reached base safely in all 11 games thus far, with 11 of his 18 hits going for extra bases. During his four-year career, Albert has racked up 48 doubles and 16 home runs. Oh, and did I mention he hit for the cycle on Feb. 18 against Limestone College (SC). Baur went 5-for-5, with a walk, single, double, triple, 2 home runs, 5 runs scored and 7 RBI. Look for Albert to continue the recent trend of N-G Saints players getting drafted (Josh Ockimey, Mark Donato).

Martin Nolasco
, Mid-America Christian (OK) jr RHP (Edison)

After two seasons at Junior College powerhouse Western Oklahoma State College, Martin has transferred to Mid-America Christian in Oklahoma City. With his team’s record at 6-4, Martin is already 3-0, winning a pair of starts and an opening day relief appearance. In 15.1 innings, he has allowed just 8 hits, while recording 15 strikeouts.

Kenny Koplove, Duke jr SS/RHP (Penn Charter)
  Pitched 2 scoreless innings in 12-7 win at California, Feb. 15: 0 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K (first pitching appearance since April 2013)

Eric Lewandowski
, Gannon sr LF/DH (Lansdale Catholic)
  First 4 GP: .462 BA (6-13), .500 OBP, 4 RBI

Joey Ravert
, La Salle jr 1B/RHP (Malvern Prep)
  Batting: 3-7, 2B, HR  ... Pitching: GS, 5 IP, ER, 3 K, Win
