The 11th annual
CYO Blue-Gold 8th grade football All-Star Game was played Monday night, May 2, at Upper
Darby High School. The game involved All-Star players from Delaware, Montgomery and
Chester Counties and a few from Philadelphia, who were selected by the coaches. The Blue
team, comprised mainly of players from Delaware County, defeated the Gold team, whose
players hailed mostly from Chester and Montgomery Counties by the score of 12-6 which
included a hard-fought defensive battle and a fantastic finish. There were over 2,300
people at the game, which helped raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charity.
Last year's game featured an offensive shootout with the Blue
besting the Gold, 39-34, thanks in part to the QB trio of Aaron Haas
(Prep), Matt McGillian (Bonner) and Iggy Schmidt
(Bonner) who combined for 3 TD passes and 1 rushing TD while the Gold team backfield of HB
Jim McGoldrick (EA) and FB Joe Coffey (Malvern) combined
for 5 touchdowns. This year featured an emphasis on defense and the players did not
disappoint.
The Blue team
received the opening kickoff which pinned them back at the 5-yard line. The Blue mixed
runs by Buddy Ferro (Haverford School), Mike Archibald
(Springfield High) and Jason Johnson (Bonner) to pick up a first down.
After a few short gains the Blue found themselves in a fourth down and 6 and, despite
being deep in their own territory, used QB Ryan Klein (EA) on a keeper to
pick up the first down yardage behind key blocks by OG Tom Pierce (EA)
and OT Rob Borman (Haverford High) and TE James Wilent (Bonner).
The Gold quickly buckled down led by LB Bob McCabe (OHara), DE
Steve Dunn (Bishop Shanahan) and DT Chris Kennedy (OHara)
and eventually forced a punt.
The Gold
Offense took over on their 38 yard line and had several short runs before QB Billy
Conners (Malvern) looked to pass but could not find anyone open due to the fine
play of the Blue D-Backs Richie Rosati (EA), Mark DiLeonardo
(OHara) and John Gormley (EA).
The Blue got
the ball back with 3 minutes left in the first Quarter and gave the ball to FB Archibald
on a dive for a short gain and then to HB Ferro on misdirection for 5 more yards.
Archibald then went up the middle again, this time for 64 yards and a touchdown to put the
blue ahead 6-0. Archibald was sprung by fine blocks by G Matt Sweeney
(Bonner), OT Jesse Arci (OHara) and OG Sean Crawford
(Bonner). The Extra point was blocked.
Matt
Rooney (Bonner) kicked off for the blue and the Gold went back on offense. FB Ryan
DeLuca (Malvern) bolted for 12 yards and a first down and was followed by HB Evan Higgins
(OHara) who got outside for 20 yards before being dragged down by Blue DB Dan
Casey (Prep). The Gold continued to use the strong running of DeLuca, Higgins as
well as Matt Ryan (OHara) and pushed down the field. The game
entered the second quarter and Tom Savage (OHara) entered for the
Gold at QB and showed a strong arm and the ability to scramble finally putting the Gold on
the scoreboard on a keeper and tying the game at 6-6 after the extra point attempt was
blocked.
The teams
traded possessions and the defenses continued to dominate. Gold QB Savage tried to throw
screens and short passes but was victimized by a few dropped balls due to the damp weather
as well as pressure by Blue defensive ends John Harnish
(OHara) and Chris Williams (Bonner) who were able to put pressure
on Savage. Blue DB Joe Price (Malvern) had several open field tackles to
prevent first downs. With 1:34 before halftime Savage dropped back on fourth down but Blue
DE Jack Lowney (Carroll) and LB Chris DiBello
(OHara) combined on a sack to force the turnover on downs.
Blue QB Klein
showed good scrambling ability and toughness on several runs getting outside on blocks by
Tight Ends Pat Murray (OHara) and Steve
Faulkner (EA) and linemen Sean Ferguson (Bonner), Tom
Sachetta (EA) and Ed Brady (Bonner). He looked for TE Sean
Tarzwell (Bonner) who was open but just missed him. He eventually completed a 30
yard pass to Ferro but the half ended in a 6-6 tie.
The defenses
continued to rule in the third quarter with the Blue getting strong play from DL Andy
Boyle (EA), Linebackers Mike McCreight
(Bonner), Sean Crossan (Carroll) and Chris Galloway (Bonner)
as well as DE Andrew Glace (OHara).
The Gold defense
also got strong second half play from Linebackers Matt Clary
(OHara), Mike Mayock (Malvern), Chris Garchinsky
(OHara) and Mike Scannapieco (Prep) as well as defensive linemen Shawn
Thornton (Shanahan) and Max McCorkle (Shanahan)
and DB Chris Ambrogi (Haverford School).
The fourth quarter began with the game still tied at 6-6. The Blue continued
to focus on their running game with QBs Klein and Michael Shuster
(OHara) handing off and occasionally looking to run themselves. Blue running backs Dominique
Hampton (West Catholic), Ryan McClatchy (Bonner) and Patrick
Leehan (Springfield High) fought hard for yards to keep possession of the ball
and try to punch in that go ahead score but the Gold defense was up to challenge also and
held them off.
The Gold
offense looked to vary their mix a little more between run and pass and had several
opportunities to go ahead. Gold RBs Ryan and De Luca put their team inside the Blue
red zone at the 13-yard line. A Gold dive went no where bringing up second down. Savage
rolled out and gained several yards before being dropped by McCreight. Several penalties
by the Gold backed them up into a fourth and 27 and they could not convert the first down.
The Blue took
over and tried several running plays but could not advance the ball and the Gold got
possession back with 5 minutes to go in the game. Higgins was bottled up by Boyle and Chris
Nolan (OHara) for no gain. DeLuca then burst through a hole for 9 yards
setting up a 3rd and 1. QB Conners was stopped for no gain and it was fourth and 1. The
Gold gave the ball to their workhorse DeLuca who was met and stopped by the equally
impressive LB from the Blue, Chris DiBello, giving the Blue the ball back with 2:56 to go.
The announcer advised that there would be no overtime so both teams knew this
would likely be their last chance to win the game. Klein rolled out several times looking
for an open receiver but the Gold pass rush was fierce and he could not get off anything.
Finally on fourth down he was hit as he threw and the pass fell incomplete leaving 1:36 on
the clock for the Gold.
The Gold
worked the ball down inside the 20-yard line of the Blue. The Gold QB dropped back and
looked left to throw. Blue DB John Gormley read his eyes and stepped in front of the pass
and raced 90 yards, just getting by several Gold players for a touchdown and a 12-6 Blue
lead with a minute to go in the game causing the stadium to erupt.
Savage
entered for Gold and lined up in the shotgun. He saw open running space in front of him
and took off for 25 yards. A pass attempt fell incomplete. He then threw a deep ball to
Chris Hobson (Malvern), who outjumped the defender for the catch at the 10 yard line as
time expired and the Blue once again prevailed by the final score of 12-6. Another
exciting game for a good cause, the Ronald McDonald House Charity.
Many of this
years players will once again be attending Inter-Ac Schools Episcopal Academy, Malvern
Prep and the Haverford School as well as attending defending Catholic League Red Division
Champion Cardinal OHara High School and runner up St. Joes Prep and Monsignor
Bonner. West Catholic has also made inroads to Delaware County and will be getting some of
this year's players as will their Blue Division rival Archbishop Carroll. Bishop Shanahan of Chester County will also get
some of this year's players and should continue to improve their program which has grown
recently along with CYO football in Chester County allowing for a change in this year's
format from a game between schools that traditionally attend OHara and Shanahan
against Schools that traditionally attend Bonner and Carroll to a game between Delaware
County and Chester & Montgomery Counties.
