Through the years, no doubt you
have come to realize I'm obsessed with clever nicknames. Check out
the list, letter by letter, and don't bother making S your first
stop. Wilt Chamberlain hated being called "The Stilt." Again, HATED
it. The reporters tried to respect his wishes, but most (all?)
eventually caved in. He LOVED "Dippy" and buddies always called him
that after be bumped his head against a pipe in a basement because
he didn't dip down low anough. So, there ya go . . . Wilt "Dippy"
Chamberlain. Bartram's Lanier "Church" Perrin lived on top of one on
58h St. near Willows Ave..
I wrote a full story about him in '93 and got to the bottom of his
unique nickname. Here's how it started:
Lanier "Church" Perrin did not acquire his nickname because his head
is long and pointy, like a steeple. Nor because he always walks
around in a suit and tie and carries a Bible. Perrin , a leaping,
6-3 senior center for John Bartram's basketball team, is called
"Church" by his buddies because he formerly lived on top of one.
Perrin's grandmother, Odell McFadden, who has since moved to North
Carolina, formerly was the pastor of a baptist church on 58th
Street, near Willows Avenue, in Southwest Philadelphia. "It was like
a house in the middle of the block," Perrin said. "The church was on
the first floor, with an apartment on top. The congregation used it
often, not just on Sundays. When the service was going on, you could
tell from upstairs. It wasn't like it was real loud, though. When we
first moved in there, I helped her with the painting and put up the
drop ceiling. Before the service, I did a lot of the cleaning,
vacuumed the carpet. My aunts would come over to help a lot, too. I
didn't like being called 'Church' at first, but I'm all right with
it now. It grew on me."
A few letters below are nickname-less, so if you have any
suggestions, send them along. Thanks.

When I began covering Public
League basketball for the long-gone Philadelphia Bulletin in the
1975-76 season, there were 19 schools. Yes, 19. If the numbers I've
found were correct, this past season the number of teams was 63.
Yes, 63!! No wonder some (many?) games resemble a bad gym class. How
can there possibly be enough quality players to stock 63 teams? . .
. Anyway, the list below shows school records (through 2015) for the
19 schools that were part of the Pub in 1975-76. Some go back a long
way. Nine were achieved from 1946 to 1977. The most recent one was
posted in 2005 and I doubt any records have been broken at those 19
schools over the last seven seasons.

If you're a fan of catchy nicknames, there was a time way back
when the Daily News wanted to throw you under the bus. Can't
remember the year, but a copy editor told me to stop using "those
stupid nicknames" becaue they detracted from the stories. I wound up
snapping out and a multi-pronged argument ensued. My point: These
are good kids trying to use sports to improve their lives. Their
friends barely know their real names and even some teachers use
their nicknames. At one point, I darn near shouted, "Are you still
going to use nicknames in the stories about shady characters selling
drugs and even killing each other? Sure, that make sense. Ugh." And
how about all those times when No. 45 for the Phillies earned a
save. Why wasn't he Frank McGraw, not Tug McGraw? Thankfully, some
higher-ups understood my feelings and I was able to keep using the
nicknames.

This is hard to believe, part two. Back on April 28, I did a
Tedbit showing just two Catholic League teams have won
quarterfinals, semifinals and finals by increasing margins going
back to 1968. Two is also the number for Public League squads from
1974 through 2015. In '99, Franklin's Denelle Holly likely was the
best sixth man in Pub playoff history. Strawberry Mansion's ballclub
featured a kid with perhaps the best nickname ever, Wayne "Whispers"
Harrington. In 85 minutes off the bench, Holly shot 22-for-29 (76
percent) en route to 47 points while also claiming 45 rebounds! I
interviewed Harrington after Mansion’s title triumph and discovered
his voice was extremely raspy and low volume. “They call me
‘Whispers’ at school,’ he said, pleasantly. They say I sound like
‘The Godfather.’ I don’t know why my voice is like this. Nothing
‘happened’ to make it this way. Just is.”

The
list below shows Public League playoffs -- 1970 through 2015,
quarterfinals on up -- that required overtime. Somewhat surprising
that just twice was more than one OT necessary, but VERY cool that
both of those contests went on and on into a fourth OT. Frankford
was involved in both and the win yielded its first Pub crown. That
game was an all-timer, as you can imagine, and I'm positive some of
Frankford's players still talk about it often. Here are the recaps
for the four-OT wars:
1988 FINAL
At Temple's McGonigle Hall
Frankford 71, West 64 (4 ot)
Frankford, a PL member since the 1916-17 season, won its first
championship in a classic war of attrition. Both teams lost four
starters to personal fouls. Frankford's ninth man, guard Jeffrey
Mack, made a huge steal in the third OT, then made another in the
fourth. The Pioneers took the lead for good, at 64-62, on Jason
Warley's rebound basket with 2:34 left. Warley had 22 points and 23
rebounds. His brother, Carlin, a sophomore, had 16 points and 15
rebounds. For West, Mik Kilgore had 27 points and 10 rebounds.
2010 QUARTERFINAL
(Also Class 4A Final)
At Franklin
Bartram 89, Frankford 87 (4 ot)
Mike Burton-Young, a 5-5 junior who did not see action until
franchise guard Tyrone Garland fouled out with 2:38 left in the
first OT, finished with nine points, two assists and one steal.
Darrell Robinson, the seventh man, added four points, 10 rebounds
and five assists. Regulation ended at 61-61. Bartram rallied from a
five-point deficit in the first OT and Frankford came back from four
in the second. Only four total points were tallied in the third.
Burton-Young went 4-for-4 at the line in the fourth extra session.
After missing two free throws at 5.4, Robinson grabbed his own
rebound and headed back to the line at 2.8. This time he made one
and Devin Moore intercepted Frankford's final inbound pass. Garland
scored 18 points. Zaahir Allen totaled 20 points, 11 rebounds.
Dehaven Brown (20), Terrell Clark (18, 15 rebounds) and Carl Wallace
(17) led Frankford, which shot 29-for-88 and 21-for-38 to Bartram's
29-for-73, 24-for-36.

The three-point rule made its Public League debut in the 1987-88
season and just one player, Southern's Kareem "Rab" Townes (41.2 in
'91), has averaged at least 40 points. In the before-treys era,
Overbrook's Wilt Chamberlain also was alone in the 40-Point Average
Club, yet his norm was six points higher at 47.2. Wilt also holds
the second and seventh spots. The players on the top list scored
4,811 points in 139 games for a 34.6 average. Bottom list: 4,206 in
122 for 34.5. As close to a dead heat as you can get.

Coaches' All-Public Teams are selected right after the regular
season concludes and through 2015 just eight squads had produced
three first teamers. Two were teams that rank among the best squads
in city history and powered ahead to win championships -- West
Philly (30-0) in 1977 and Gratz (31-0) in '93. Two others also
captured crowns, Imhotep in '07 and '09. In '73, a strike by
teachers limited Pub play to two games and the Sonny Hill Winter
League took over from there.

From Chuck Langerman . . .
St. Joseph's University graduate student Ian McCole made history,
throwing just the fourth solo no-hitter in program history with an
18-0 win over St. Bonaventure. It's the first solo no-hitter in
school history in 52 years since 1967 St.
Joseph's Prep graduate Dave
Landers did it
in 1970. Landers a right-handed hitting outfielder/pitcher holds the
St. Joe's University career record with a .393 batting average.

A lot of very good Public League
players earned first team honors just once, so the field for this
list was not as large as it was for the Catholic and Inter-Ac
leagues. However, the top three dips were rather large. FLC's Faron
"Meatball" Hand was a first team All-Coty player in 1991 and '92 and
the Bobcats won the Pub crown in '92, so we doubt he minded.

There's one thing I love about the list below: Twenty-six Public
League products have made the All-Big First Team at least twice
going back to the organization's first season in 1955-56. There’s
one thing I don't Like: Only seven have played in this century. Cmon,
guys. Dionte Chrsistnas, "Mardy" Collins, Lynn Greer and Steve Smith
all advanced to the NBA. The three others – Rodney Green, Ramone
Moore, Marvin O’Connor – played pro ball in other countries, so I'm
guessing all seven guys would agree that staying home for college
was a smart move.

two-season run while serving as Overbrook's coach in the '79 and '80
seasons. He claimed the city record for overall record at 34-0, then
posted the highest winning percentage in a one-loss season with a
34-1 record. From 1950 through 2015, 21 Public League teams finished
with overall records including no setbacks or one. 'Brook led the
way with seven. West Philly was next with four.

You should have known this one: My first Public League Tedbit would be
focused on Wilt Chamberlain. Some of you might have learned through
the years that his three biggest outbursts were 90, 74 and 71 points
and that all three took place versus Roxborough. As you'll see
below, thanks to numbers nailed down long ago by Tom Taylor, Wilt
also posted 59 vs. Dobbins and hit every number from 49 on down to
24 except for 27. Pretty amazing. Overall, in three varsity seasons
(ninth grade was part of junior high back then), he scored 46.9
percent of the Hilltoppers' points.

If you checked the boxscores each day in the 1967-68 basketball
season, you had to figure O'Hara's Joe Hazinsky was miserable. He'd
averaged 21.9 points in the previous campaign while earning first
team All-Catholic honors, but now his numbers were falling and darn
near plummeting. What was the deal? Fighting an injury and/or
sickness? Saddled with some knuckleheaded teammates? Nope, the team
was better, much better, and Hazinsky did not have to pump away. His
final average was 13.6 and he again made first team All-Catholic.
Oh, and there was this: O'Hara won the CL championship in just its
fourth season of participation! Future NBA player Tom Ingelsby, a
junior. was one of the starters. The list below shows average dips
of at least three points for CL first-teamers from junior to senior
season. Hazinsky played college ball at St. Francis (PA) and owns a
spot in the school’s Athletics HOF. Congrats!

Oh, what happened to the good, ol' days, especially with regard to
the McDonald's All-Ameriacn Game? No game was played in 1977, but an
all-star team was selected and West Philly's Gene Banks was on it.
The game made its debut in '78 and was played at Philly's old
Spectrum and two "Our Guys" were participants -- West Philly's
Clarence "Eggy" Tillman and Roman's Reggie Jackson. The good vibes
continued through Five of the next eight tussles and then . . . ugh.
"Our Guys" have appeared in just five more games and just one has
done so since 2009. Here are performance breakdowns.
1978 -- Reggie Jackson, Roman Catholic, and Clarence "Eggy"
Tillman, West Philadelphia. Jackson shot 4-for-14 for nine points
and had five assists. Tillman shot 3-for-9 for seven points and had
three rebounds.
1979 -- Horace "Pappy" Owens, Murrell Dobbins Tech. Owens shot
9-for-17 for 18 points and had three assists.
1980 -- Lonnie McFarlan, Roman Catholic. McFarlan shot 6-for-13
for 13 points.
1983 -- Dallas Comegys, Roman Catholic. Comegys had six points,
16 rebounds and six blocks.
1985 -- Jerome "Pooh" Richardson, Ben Franklin, and Mark
Stevenson, Roman Catholic. Richardson shot 4-for-9 for 10 points and
had six assists. Stevenson shot 7-for-16 for 16 points.
1986 -- Barry Bekkedam, Archbishop Carroll. Bekkedam was held
scoreless in 8-plus minutes, shooting 0-for-3 from the floor and
0-for-4 at the line. (He contracted mono after scoring 37, 38 and 41
points in the final three regular season games. He missed the
playoffs and lost 15 pounds.)
1993 -- Rasheed Wallace, Simon Gratz. Wallace shot 4-for-7 for
nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
2000 -- Eddie Griffin, Roman Catholic. Griffin shot 7-for-16 for
19 points (two treys) while adding four rebounds and two blocks.
2006 -- Gerald Henderson and Wayne Ellington, both of Episcopal.
Henderson shot 6-for-10 (one trey) and 3-for-4 for 16 points.
Ellington shot 3-for-10 total and 2-for-8 on treys for eight points.
2009 -- Maalik Wayns, Roman Catholic. Shot 2-for-6 and 1-for-1
for five points. Also notched seven assists to just one turnover.
(He underwent right-knee meniscus surgery and missed nine
late-season games before returning for the finale, a first-round,
state-playoff loss. This game was played 3 1/2 weeks later.)
2017 -- Quade Green, Neumann-Goretti. Played 16 minutes off the
bench, shooting 4-for-12 (one trey) en route to nine points. Also
dished seven assists, but was guilty of the same number of
turnovers.
(Due to COVID, games were not played in 2020 and 2021.)

Back in the day, as oldheads like to say, Carroll's Barry Bekkedam
finished his season with quite the bang. In the 1985-86 season, he
broke the school record for points in three consecutive games with
37, 38 and 41 -- all in the CL Southern Division -- and finalized
his league average at 23.6 (14-330). The Patriots finished 10-4 for
second place and lost to O'Hara, 54-49, in the first round of the
playoffs. How'd Barry do? Can't score if you can't play. The
Canadian import was unavailable due to the flu, a strep throat and a
touch of mono. Alas, touch became full-blown and by the time Barry
suited up for the McDonald's All-American Gane, he was a shell of
his former self, having lost 15 pounds. In eight-plus minutes, he
failed to score while shooting 0-for-3 from the floor and 0-for-4 at
the line. So rough. And things were difficult at Villanova also. In
three injury-riddled seasons he totaled 142 points and 116 rebounds,
then declined to play as a senior by "mutual agreement." In CL
history, just five players have scored at least 35 points in as many
as three league games. West's Michael Brooks (RIP) averaged 39.3 PPG
over those three performances in 1976. Averages for the others:
Bekkedam (38.7), West's Monroe Blakes (38.3 over four in ‘88).
Roman's Eddie Griffin (38.0 in ‘99) and St. Thomas More's Billy Hoy
(36.6 in ‘59). Barry was the only one to notch his outbursts in
succession to finish league play. Eddie (RIP) did all of his damage
as a junior. He and Michael played in the NBA.

In a league with only six teams, the size of the Inter-Ac since
1969, it's not THAT hard for a school to produce first team honorees
year after year after . . . Malvern did so for 21 through 1969 and
Germantown Academy slapped together a 14-year streak from 2004
through '17. But check out Penn Charter's 16-year accomplishment. It
goes waaaay back from '41 through '56 and the Quakers won 11
championships (two shared). Pretty cool.

Wonder how many schools across the country can make one specific
claim? Well, we know one can do so and it's right here in Philly.
For 50 consecutive -- yes, FIFTY! -- seasons, at least one Roman
player has earned first team Coaches' All-Catholic honors. Jim
"Chico" Singleton and Donald Kelly started the dominance in 1973 by
grabbing two of the five spots on the Southern Division first team.
Chico and Frank Sykes had been second teamers in ’72, Nos. 6 and 7
respectively. Divisions -- North/South, then Red/Blue -- existed
through 2010 and the schools have competed in one overall group ever
since. Speaking of 2011, the streak almost ended then. Roman came
close to whiffing on the 10-player first team. Coming in ninth was
frontcourter Fortunat "Junior" Kangudi, an import from Montreal. His
11.0 scoring average has been the second lowest of any first team
Cahillite during the streak; Tony Carr averaged 10.9 in 2015. As
you'll see on the list below, Neumann-Goretti also owns a long
streak at 27 seasons. A couple more nuggets: Roman’s feat has
involved 50 players – yes, FIFTY again! – and they’ve combined for
76 honors. In 1.027 games, they’ve racked up 18,058 points for a
17.6 average.

The Inter-Ac League got started one year late with the

while for the effect to be felt. The lists below show the I-A's Top

The 2021-22season was No. 36 for the three-point shot in Catholic
League basketball. So, how big of an impact has it had? The lists
below show the Top 10 averages in CL play before and after The Big
Change. The top spots on each side belong to West Catholic guys.
Future NBAer Michael Brooks (RIP) owns the before mark at 27.3 in
1976. Monroe Blakes beat him by two-10ths of a point in 1988 (27.5).
The Top 10 Before Guys scored 3,470 points in 139 games for a 25.0
average. The After Guys' numbers -- 134-3,407-25.4 . Not a
monumental difference.

Another day, another
screwup. My apologies to the people at Penn. The Quakers have
produced four NBA coaches and the details are below. Thanks to Ted
Rauch for mentioning Dick Harter. A correct version of how to search
led to the others.
Before the research for this nugget commenced, I kinda knew which
college would emerge victorious. The level of dominance? Surprising.
The Big 5 was formed for the 1955-56 season, but the schools go back
much further. Maybe at some point you've wondered, How many products
of Big 5 schools have coached in the NBA? The answer is 10 and seven
have called Saint Joseph's home. Penn is last at zero while La
Salle, Temple and Villanova are tied for second at one. The
breakdown for records is below, and a big thanks goes to basketball-reference.com.
Temple's Eddie Gottlieb guided the Philadelphia Warriors to the
NBA's first championship in 1947 (though, at the time, the league
was known as the Basketball Association of America). the Warriors
seized their second crown in 1956 and that team's coach was ex-Hawk
George Senesky. More titles? Wait, two more, thanks to Hawk Hill
guys! Jack Ramsay took the Portland Trail Blazers to the 1977 summit
and Paul Westhead did likewise with the 1980 Los Angeles Lakers.
Alas, both teams beat the Sixers in the finals. That 1980 season
began wih Jack McKinney -- like Ramsay, he also coached high school
ball at the ol' St. James, in Chester -- running the Lakers.
However, he suffered serious injuries in a bicycle accident and
Westhead replaced him 13 games in. Last night, I texted long-time
friend and former Daily News sports editor Pat McLoone to see if he
could guess St. Joe's number of NBA coaches. Bang, he got it. "I was
going to go with six, but I went with one over." Niiiiiiiice.

Trivia question from Chuck Langerman .
. .
Who is the only player from the Philadelphia area who was drafted in
the first round of the NFL Draft and played his prep football in
both a Philadelphia City League and South Jersey?
tedtee307@yahoo.com
No correct answers:
Answer: Bob
Bell,
who played scholastically at West Philadelphia High and the now
defunct Bordentown Military Institute in South Jersey. In 1971, he
was drafted in the first round, pick #21. out of the University of
Cincinnati by the Detroit Lions.

This is hard to bellieve,
but here we go: Since quarterfinals became a part of the Catholic
League playoffs in 1968, just TWO champs have gone up the
point-margin ladder over the three games. Neumann barely did so in
1985 with wins by one, two and three points for the minimum number,
six. Roman had no problem in 2019.

Today's nugget will start off with something quite unusual -- an
apology to Dean Melchiooni. As youll see below, 22 players have
served as starters for at least three inter-Ac League champions --
outright or shraed -- going back to 1941. Dean, a forward at
Germantown Academy and nephew of former Villanova star and NBA
player Bill Melchiooni, stands alone as someone who did not receive
All-Inter-Ac honors -- first OR second team. Had to be hard to
swallow. He scored 52, 39 and 81 points in league play. Lee is his
brother. Six guys won three titles while thrice earning first team
honors. GA's Paul Hutter and Malvern's Gordy Bryan were four-timers
though their teams did not win the championship when they were
seniors.

Roman's Bernard Jones (final in 1990) and Carroll's Ryan Daly
(quarterfinal in 2016) share a Catholic League record. What is it?
Most points scored (30 apiece) by the leader for the winning team in
a playoff that required overtime. Ryan had a slight advantage
because that game lasted two OTs. The list shows details for all OT
39 CL playoffs. Roman went 9-3 in these games.

The Inter-Ac League does not have (and has never had) basketball
playoffs, so we couldn't
match a recent Catholic League posting. Yet, we came up with this
idea: Longest streaks of
consecutive I-A seasons with winning records from 1950 on up. The record
is 8 and is shared
by Haverford School, Penn Charter and Germantown Academy. Jim
Fenerty was GA's coach
for all eight seasons. He also had a seven-season streak. Lots of
legends on here -- Speedy
Morris, Fran Dunphy, Jack Kraft, Dan Dougherty, Jim Rullo, Duke
Taylor, Buff Weigand . . .

It's the 1973-74 season, the playoffs are about to begin and La
Salle High coach Mike Osborne becomes the Wizard of Oz. How so? He
sent shock waves throughout the CL when he decided to start a soph
who'd never played more than two minutes in a varsity game and whose
CL point total stood at 4 -- all in one game. His name was Matt
Mihalich, a lefty guard, and his brother, Joe, a senior and also a
guard (and later a long-time college coaxh), was the Explorers' No.
2 scorer at 13.1 PPG. Matt scored 43 points in three playoffs as the
'Splorers made it to the final, in which they fell to Roman. Thus,
Matt is the leader on today's list -- Biggest Point Climbs in
Playoffs by Members of Non-Winning Teams in CL Finals, 1968-Forward.
Carroll's Tom Dearborn makes his second appearance. O'Hara's Michael
Arizin is the son of NBA all-timer Paul Arizin. Carroll's Kevin
"Butch" Lynam is Jim's brother. Andrew Rogers was coached at Ryan by
his brother, Bernie, now the boss at Haverford School.

"C'mon, guys! Time to step it up!" Every coach utters those words,
or something simiilar, as the playoffs are about to begin and, boy,
did these guys listen. The Catholic League started the
quarterfinal/semifinal/final playoff setup in 1968 and the list
below shows which members of championship teams averaged at least
four more points over the three playoffs. Sitting up top at 9.6 are
two big-time stars, Rod Blake for Bonner in 1984 and Mark Zoller for
SJ Prep in 2003. Carroll's Tom Dearborn averaged nine more PPG in
1995. Eight Roman guys made the list. Only three Neumann/N-G guys
did so. Three champs were lifted by two much-better guys -- Roman in
1989, Carroll in 1995 and SJ Prep in 2004.

Yesterday's Tedbit focused on the playoff streaks of schools. Today it's
coaches. Notice that five guys reached 11 and the top guy doubled
that. Bill Fox (RIP) reached 26 total. Speedy Morris hit 22.

Which Catholic League schools have slapped together the longest
playoff runs? Just look below. Actually, even very short runs are
included. Neumann/N-G rules the roost with 25 consecutive seasons.
St. Thomas More, which closed in 1975, had three runs of only two
seasons. In what might surprise some folks, Judge owns the No. 2
berth over Roman, 22-20. Visits to preplayoffs have been included.
The 2021 playoffs were limited to semis and final by the coronavirus
crap.

Top 50 players in 76ers franchise
history? Right
here.
Tedbit
Here's hoping the coaches on today's list never hollered at their
star players for shooting the ball too much. In fact, they might
have yelled, "Keep firing away or you'll be sitting next to me!" The
guys below scored at least 300 points in Catholic League regular
season play and playoffs and later coached in the CL. The leader is
North Catholic grad Barry Brodzinski ('73), who coached at Roman for
five seasons (1982-86). GS means Games Scored. So some actual
averages would be slightly lower if a guy was not a starter in one
or even two varsity seasons. Please speak up if I missed anyone.
Thanks. (Only Ryan's Joe Zeglinski is an active CL coach.)
Brodzinski, Burke (two apiece), Billy Hoy, Ed "Shot" Stefanski, Fran
O'Hanlon and Tom Ingelsby won CL championships as coaches.
Brodzinski's older brother, Iggy (NC '69), fell a shade short (280
points) of making the list.

The Kyle Klymb continues. Kyle Lowry,
a 2004 graduate of now-closed Cardinal Dougherty, recently completed
his 16th NBA regular season at age 36. His point total stands at
15,116, good for fifth place among "Our Guys" (Public, Catholic,
Inter-Ac). As you can see, seven of the 10 guys are from waaaay back
in the day. No. 4 and No. 6 are more modern. Kyle is in his first
year with the Miami Heat. Injuries limited him to 63 games, but he
started every one, according to basketball.reference.com. In fact,
he has not come off the bench since the 2013 season, his first of
nine with Toronto. He has made at least 596 consecutive starts. You
go, Kyle!

Next basketball season, Billy Cassidy will become the 17th Bonner
product to coach a Catholic League team. "Product" was used in that
sentance because he's not a graduate. Yes, he played for Bonner in
the 2010 and '11 seasons -- just before the merger with Prendergast
-- but then spent his final two varsity seasons at Friends' Central
of the Friends School League before dividing his quite productive
college career between Chestnut Hill College and Neumann University.
Billy previously assisted at Penncrest, but also assisted for B-P in
the 2018-19 season. His stint with the Friars will end a four-year
drought. In EVERY season from 1967 through 2018 (52 straight), at
least one CL school was coached by a Bonner grad. Bud Gardler did
some heavy lifting in that category thanks to seven seasons at the
ol' Bishop Kenrick and 32 at Cardinal O'Hara. Nine alums have
coached Bonner/B-P and Jack Concannon did so twice. The drought
began when Jack ended his second stint after the 2018 season. The
list below shows names/schools/years and won-loss records in CL
regular season play. Ed "Shot" Stefanski in '83 (with Jack as a star
forward), Art Hunter in '84 and Mike Lynam in '76 at Kenrick won
championships. Billy Cassidy is the very definition of competitive,
so don't be surprised if he claims a crown. His dad, Bill, also a
former Friars' assistant, will help out behind the scenes. He's
likewise a Mr. Feisty (smile).

Listed below are the Top 10 Catholic/Inter-Ac Dandy Duos for this
century. Well, 12 actually due to a triple tie for 10th. No
qualifiers for the 2021-22 season, but all seasons from 2017 through
2021 are represented. The No. 1 spot belongs to Germantown Academy
lefties Evan-Eric Longino and Kyle McCloskey. Kyle also played QB
for GA, as did Evan-Eric's brother, Jordan, now a member of
Villanova's hoops squad.

The old saying goes, "Score a lot of points and you'll make
first team All-Catholic." Not so fast. Check out the list below. It
shows the leading scorer, school by school, based on average, for
NON first teamers. Conwell-Egan's Patrick Robinson, with 23.5 PPG in
2018, is the cake-taker. Two others topped 20.0 and five others
averaged at least 19.0. Most players did earn second team honors and
most guys played for teams that finished down in the standings. In
1954, Roman's Ray Dovell averaged 19.2, the league's second highest
total, and was the first guy on the second team. All but three
players popped up on second team and most played for teams that were
not in the playoff hunt.

Best wishes to Billy Cassidy, the new
basketball coach at Bonner-Prendergast. He played high school hoops
at Bonner and Friends' Central and formerly assisted at B-P. As did
his dad, Bill. Story
here.
Congrats to LHP Jeff Singer, a graduate
of Holy Cross in Delran, NJ. The Phillies have called him up from
the minors. Jeff's dad, Mark, pitched for Judge and earned first
team All-Catholic honors in 1980.
Along with third team All-City. Also,
LHP Tim Mayza has been added to the Toronto Blue Jays' roster. Tim's
dad, Jerry, was Judge's point guard in 1981. One of the other
starters was a forward named . . . Mark Singer. Yes, that Mark
Singer.
Time for a Chuck Langerman Chuckbit.

Every team enters a Catholic League basketball season with hopes
of winning the championship. Not too realistic for most squads, of
course, but high hopes made a decent amount of sense in 1919-20. How
so? That was season No. 1 for CL hoops and the league included just
five teams -- St. Joe's Prep, Villanova Prep, Roman Catholic, West
Catholic and La Salle. Twenty percent chance for each. The crown was
decided by regular season play and SJ Prep finished first at 7-1.
The list below shows a breakdown for all CL members. When did they
join? When did they win their first championship? How many seasons
did it take? Who was the coach? Of course, some short-term members
never did and the wait has been quite lengthy for others. McDevitt
(58 years), st. James (52) and Salesianum (24) never broke through
and Ryan's drought stands at 55. O'Hara won the suburbs battle,
fourth season to fifth season, over Bonner. Mike Lynam is the
brother of Jim Lynam, former college/NBA coach and current TV
personality. Tom Ingelsby was a star for the '68 O'Hara team and his
son, Martin, was a sophomore starter for Carroll's '95 champs.
Martin is now Delaware's coach.

St. James, in Chester, was a part
of the Catholic League basketball landscape for 52 seasons before
closing in June 1993 and times were usually Tough with a capital T.
The Bulldogs/Jimmies went 189-555 for a winning percentage of .254
in CL play and just one of the 12 coaches finished with a winning CL
career record -- Jack McKinney, 17-11 over the 1959 and '60 seasons.
McKinney coached in the NBA, as did the man who coached him as a
player at St. James and St. Joseph's College, Jack Ramsay. Ramsay's
final St. James team, in the '52 season, was headlined by a guy who
owns a Catholic League record! We're talking about lefty Bill Lynch,
who scored 47.5 percent of the Jimmies' CL points. He scored 352 in
14 games (25.1 PPG) and the team scored 741. The top three players
on the list below are all from the 1950s, as is No. 5. Scores were
usually much lower back then. The list shows all players who've
averaged at least 25 PPG. Eddie Griffin's percentage was so low in
2000 because he only played in 10 of Roman's 14 CL games. So, what
became of Bill Lynch, a 6-5/6-6 center? He played four seasons at
St. Joseph's, totaling 1,070 points and 1,107 rebounds, per college
basketball reference. Ramsay coached him there as a senior and his
teammates included two guys who'd go on to achieve high school
coaching success in Philly -- Dan Dougherty and Jim Purcell.
McKinney was also on that '56 team. If you're wondering, Lynch's
1,070 points on Hawk Hill represented 14 percent of the team's
7,640.

Roman and Neumann-Goretti were the dominant schools on yesterday’s
list of the Top 15 best averages in Catholic League regular season
play. So today we’ll shine the light on both by listing each
school’s Top 10 efforts. Who takes the cake? N-G is the winner, 78.5
to 77.0. Amazingly, the ninth and 10th averages for each school are
the same, 74.6 and 73.4 No. 9 for the South Philly school goes back
to 1965 and the Bishop Neumann era. The South MVP for that '91 Roman
team was future pro football HOF honoree Marvin Harrison.

Have you ever wondered . . . Which
teams in Catholic League hoops history have averaged the most points
in regular season play? Well, the list is below. The leader, by a
semi-comfortable margin, is Neumann-Goretti's 2010 powerhouse. Those
Saints averaged 88 points per game and all five starters found
themselves in double figures -- Tony Chennault (17.9). Danny Stewart
(13.8), Tyreek Duren (13.6), Lamin Fulton (11.6) and Mustafaa Jones
(10.7). N-G scored 89, 74 and 75 in the CL playoffs, then 75 in the
City Title followed by 64, 91, 53, 81 and 65 in state playoffs while
completing the triple crown. The average in those nine postseason
games was 74.1. In 31 total games (30-1 record), N-G averaged 81.5
points and the only loss was suffered against Yates (Houston Texas)
by a score of 97-96 in the championship game of the Iolani Classic,
in Hawaii. That Yates squad owns the national high school record for
most PPG (116.2). They once exploded for 170 and and reached 100 26
times while finishing 34-0.
Here's
a story about that loss to Yates . . .
As usual, the speedy Lions of Jack
Yates (Houston) saved their best for last.
Trailing most of the way, Yates rallied from an eight-point
deficit in the second half for a thrilling 97-96 win over Neumann-Goretti
(Philadelphia) last night in the final of the 'Iolani Classic at the
Raiders campus gym.
Joseph Young's four free throws in the final minute were the
difference. He sank two to give the Lions a 95-94 lead with 59
seconds left, but Neumann-Goretti's Tyreek Duran drove for a bucket
and a one-point lead with 45 ticks left.
Young, a Providence recruit, then was whistled for an offensive
foul with 38 seconds to go. Yates' Gary Jackson came up big on
defense, tying up Neumann-Goretti's Lamin Fulton for a jump ball at
midcourt, giving possession to the Lions.
Young then drove and drew a foul with 7 seconds left. His free
throws hit all net for the final points.
The Saints from Philly pushed the ball upcourt and it was tipped
out in the corner with 2.1 seconds left. After each team took a time
out, Neumann-Goretti found Fulton, who had made three 3-pointers,
wide open at the top from 22 feet out. His shot missed as time
expired.
Brandon Peters, the slam-dunk champion of the tourney, led Yates
with 28 points. Young, named the Classic most valuable player,
finished with 25 points and Darius Gardner had 23. Tony Chennault
led Neumann-Goretti with 28 points and Duran added 20. Daniel
Stewart chipped in 18.
The Saints started strong behind Chennault, a Wake Forrest commit,
and took a 36-24 lead early in the second quarter, but Yates'
break-neck pace eventually wore out the Saints and just about every
fan among the capacity crowd at 'Iolani.
Yates averaged 91.8 points per game in four contests. The Lions,
ranked sixth nationally, had averaged 130 per game coming into the
Classic.
Neumann-Goretti was ranked No. 18 before reaching the tourney and
upsetting No. 6

Since All-City Basketball Teams began their half-century (plus
one) run in 1972, just eight sophomores have found themselves on
first teams. The first three guys stayed around to finish great
careers at Public League schools. The next three were "stolen" by
other schools. Guard Robert Wright (Neumann-Goretti) and
forward/center Thomas Sorber (Ryan) were the young bucks on this
year's squad. Let's hope they decline to be poached and stay HERE to
have more fun and create lifetime memories. Remember, Ben Simmons
attended one of those -- cough, cough -- big-time schools, Montverde
Academy. They did a great job teaching him how to shoot a jumper,
didn't they?

Three days ago, for Catholic League
schools, we posted a list of fourth-leading scorers who averaged at
least 10.0 PPG. Below is the Inter-League version. The leader is Tim
Knettler (11.8), who played for Penn Charter's 1972 powerhouse,
which some consider the top team (23-2 overall) in I-A history. The
other starters were Ed Enoch (15.5), Barnes Hauptfuhrer (15.2), Tim
O'Rourke (14.8) and Mike Enoch (8.8). Ed's brother. He was a soph.
The others were seniors.

If you thought a few years back that Wood product Collin Gillespie

these last two seasons he has added the MVP award. The list below

It's not too common for a high school team to boast four guys with
double-figure averages. But a long-time friend was part of one and
his accomplishment inspired this nugget. In the 1976-77 season, La
Salle High wing sniper Pat McLoone averaged 12.3 points in Catholic
League Northern Division play. The three guys ahead of him were Fran
McCaffery (15.4), the Markward Club's CL player of the year and now
the coach at Iowa, Bernie Fitzgerald (14.3), who coached at La Salle
and Lansdale Catholic, and Mike Troy (13.7). Pat chose journalism
for his career and was impressive enough to become the sports editor
of the Daily News and later even the managing sports editor
for the DN, Inquirer and philly.com. Niiiiiiice! Anyway, I
started to wonder, how many fourth-leading scorers have averaged as
many as 12.3 points? As it turned out, not many. The top two guys,
at 14.1, are recent Roman player Allen Betrand and Wood player
Daeshon Shepherd. Pat is tied for fifth. Oh, in a pre-playoff loss
to Dougherty, Pat led the Explorers with 17 points. If the
three-point rule existed then, he could have sniffed 25. Pat's sons,
Dan and Tom, played hoops for Bonner. His nephew, Rich Hofmann,
played for St. Joe's Prep (starter in 2008) and now covers the 76ers
for The Athletic. Rich's dad, also Rich, was a long-time sports
columnist for the DN.

Chris McNesby stands alone in Catholic League history. The Roman
coach is the first guy to
produce championships in the first year of his first AND second
stints at the same school. He won the 2009 Class 4A City Title in
his first go-'round at Roman and this year captured the City Title
and state championship at the Class 6A level after stepping away
from 2017 through 2021. All other guys below won a championship (or
two) in year number one of their first (and only) stint. The CL goes
back to 1920. City Tiles existed from 1939 through 1980 (except for
'73, Pub teachers on strike), then resumed in 2009 when the CL
joined the PIAA. Chances for state crowns also began then.

It's not easy being ancient, but I'm still pretty sure that 12
times five equals 60. So that mean 60 guys have been rotation-member
starters for the 12 teams that have won Catholic League
champiosnships for coach Carl Arrigale at Neumann/Neumann-Goretti.
Not 60 DIFFERENT guys . . . and that's the point of this nugget.
Seventeen guys have been multi-year starters. Chris Del Brocco got
things started on the 2001 and 2002 squads. John Davis enjoyed
starting for three title teams and Ja'Quan Newton was the cake-taker
as a four-timer from 2011 through 2014. No guys have enjoyed the
double-dip experience since then because the most recent crowns were
garnered four years apart in 2018 and 2022. Listed below are the 17
guys with their Coaches' All-Catholic honors. (Those teams are
selected before the playoffs begin.) Breakdown: 18 first-teamers,
seven second-teamers, five third-teamers.
